Long Essay On My Favourite Sportsperson

Sport is a great way to get your body moving and your mind working, and there are so many different sports to choose from! In this essay, I’ll be discussing my favourite sport, football. You might be thinking ‘who isn’t a fan of football?’ But before we get into the nitty gritty of why I love the sport, let me tell you a little bit about myself.

Who is your favourite sportsperson?

There is no one sportsperson that I absolutely idolize. However, there are a few that come close to the top of my list. These athletes have displayed exemplary skills and dedication both on and off the court, making them some of my favourites.

1) LeBron James – LeBron James is without a doubt my favourite sportsperson. He has always been one of the best players in the NBA, and has continued to amaze spectators with his talents even after joining the Lakers. His drive and determination are unparalleled, and he never gives up on his dreams. He is an inspiration to all young athletes out there, and I look forward to watching him continue to dominate the league for years to come.

2) Serena Williams – Serena Williams is another amazing athlete who I enjoy watching tremendously. She is a multiple Grand Slam champion, as well as being ranked number 1 in the world numerous times. Her play both on Court and off is exciting to watch, and she always seems to bring her A-game when it matters most. Her hard work ethic is admirable, and she truly represents what it means to be a dedicated athlete.

3) Michael Jordan – Michael Jordan may not be currently playing at the same level as he did in his early days, but that does not mean he isn’t still one of the greatest basketball players ever. His talent was simply unmatched, and he inspired countless youngsters to pick up a ball and try their hand at this amazing sport . His competitive spirit and willingness to give everything he has on the court is admirable, and I admire him for that more than anything. He will always be one of my favourites.

Why are they your favourite?

There are many reasons why I love the sportsperson that I do. Some of it is due to the person’s individual characteristics, such as their athletic prowess or their charisma on and off the field. But some of it is simply because they represent everything that is great about sports, and I admire them for it.

Some of my favourite sportspersons have a combination of both personal and professional qualities that appeal to me. They are both talented and successful, but they also have a down-to-earth personality that makes them relatable. They are also willing to give back to their community, whether through charity work or by supporting other athletes in their competitions.

Ultimately, what draws me to these sporting heroes is their passion for the game. Whether they are playing for fun or trying to win a championship, these individuals are fully committed to their craft. And that dedication is something that I admire deeply.

What makes them stand out from the rest?

When it comes to sport, there are few people who can boast the level of success and acclaim that athletes such as Pele, Michael Jordan and LeBron James have achieved. However, there are a select few sportspersons who transcend the sport they play to become universally admired figures. These individuals are known for their thrilling performances on the field or court, their charismatic personalities and, most importantly, for their passion for their chosen sport.

One such sportsman is Roger Federer. A Swiss national, Federer has cemented himself as one of the greatest tennis players of all time and is widely considered to be one of the best ambassadors for his sport. He has won 16 Grand Slam titles – more than any other man in history – including seven Wimbledon Championships and five US Open Championships. His exceptional record on both hardcourt surfaces and grass courts has made him one of the most popular athletes in the world.

Federer’s unique mix of athleticism, artistry and charisma has drawn legions of fans around the world. His love affair with tennis is evident in everything he does – from his playing style to his celebrations on court. Federer is a true ambassador for tennis, not only on a professional level but also off it; he is heavily involved in charitable work and regularly gives back to his community through initiatives such as The Roger Federer Foundation.

Federer’s achievements on the tennis court have made him an icon not only within his own sport but also within the global community. He is a role model to aspiring athletes, and his passion for tennis has inspired generations of fans to get involved in the sport themselves. Federer’s achievements are truly unique and make him one of the most celebrated sportsmen in the world.

What would you say is their biggest strength?

There is no single answer to this question as athletes have different strengths that make them successful. However, some of the most common characteristics that make an athlete successful are discipline, determination, and hard work.

Discipline is key for any athlete, and it is especially important for athletes who compete in sports with a high level of skill or competition. Athletes need to be able to focus on their goals and stay focused during competitions. Discipline also translates into other areas of life – if an athlete is able to maintain discipline in their everyday life, they are likely to be successful in other endeavors as well.

Athletes also need determination. It can be difficult for athletes to continue working hard even when they are not winning or making progress. They must have the will power to keep going even when things are not going their way. This determination enables athletes to overcome difficult challenges and reach their goals.

Finally, hard work is essential for any athlete who wants to achieve success. Hard work does not guarantee success, but it is definitely necessary. If an athlete does not put in the time and effort required to be successful, there is no chance of achieving goals.

What would you say is their biggest weakness?

When it comes to their sport, many people would say that one of the athletes’ biggest weaknesses is their lack of discipline. They can be very impulsive, and this can lead to them making poor choices on the field or court. Another common flaw for many athletes is a lack of focus. They may be able to perform at a high level for short periods of time, but they will struggle when it comes to sustaining a high level of performance over an extended period of time.

If you could have one word to describe them, what would it be?

I absolutely adore athletes who are very disciplined and work hard at their sport. To me, these athletes embody the word “hardworking”. They never give up, no matter how tough the challenge seems. I admire their dedication to their sport and the passion they have for it. Some of my favourites in this category are Serena Williams, Michael Jordan, and Usain Bolt.

Each of these athletes is highly acclaimed for their incredible accomplishments in their respective sports. Serena Williams is a world champion tennis player who has won 22 singles titles and six doubles titles. Michael Jordan is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, with six NBA championships and more than thirty-five MVP awards to his name. And Usain Bolt is an Olympic champion sprinter who has won eight gold medals in total: four in the 100 metres, two in the 200 metre sprint, and two in the 4×100 metre relay.

These athletes are truly phenomenal examples of hard work and determinationpaying off handsomely in terms of accolades and fame. They have inspired me to be more dedicated to my own personal goals, and to never give up on anything I set out to do.

1.  These Are The Heroes Of The Coronavirus Pandemic  By Ruth Marcus

Examples of essays about heroes: These Are The Heroes Of The Coronavirus Pandemic By Ruth Marcus

“Is this what they signed up for? There is some danger inherent in the ordinary practice of medicine, but not this much. I confess: I do not know that I would do the same in their circumstances; I am not sure I am so generous or so brave. If my child were graduating from medical school, how would I deal with her being sent, inadequately protected, into an emergency room? If my husband were a physician, would I send him off to the hospital — or let him back into the house in the interim?” Ruth Marcus

Healthcare workers have had no choice but to go above and beyond in recent years. In this essay, Marcus discusses the heroism of those in the healthcare field. He delves into the traits (including selflessness and courage) that make doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers heroes.

2.  Why Teachers Are My Heroes   By Joshua Muskin

“Teachers are my heroes because they accept this responsibility and try extremely hard to do this well even when the conditions in which they work are far from ideal; at least most do. Our jobs as society, education systems, and parents is to do our best to be strong allies to teachers, since their success is essential to ours.” Joshua Muskin

In this essay, Dr. Muskin discusses the many challenges teachers face and what parents, administrators, and education researchers can do to help teachers support students. Muskin explains that most teachers go above and beyond the call of duty to serve their classrooms.

3.  Martin Luther King Jr.—Civil Rights Activist & Hero   By Kathy Weiser-Alexander

“During this nonviolent protest, activists used boycotts, sit-ins, and marches to protest segregation and unfair hiring practices that caught the attention of the entire world. However, his tactics were put to the test when police brutality was used against the marchers, and King was arrested. But, his voice was not silenced, as he wrote his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” to refute his critics.” Kathy Weiser-Alexander

In this essay, Weiser-Alexander details both the traits and the actions of Dr. King before and during the civil rights movement. The author touches on King’s commitment to justice, persistence, and willingness to stand for his beliefs despite difficult circumstances.

“I remember this so vividly because Prefontaine was a hero to me, a hero in a way that no one was before, or really has been since. A British commentator once called him “an athletic Beatle.” If so, his persona was much more Lennon than McCartney. Actually, I thought of him more as Mick Jagger — or ultimately James Dean.” Bill O’Brian

A hero to many in the running world, Prefontaine’s confidence, unique style, and unmatched athletic ability have been heralded for decades. In this essay, O’Brian shares how he, as a distance runner during the era of Pre, related to his struggles and ambition.

“Burr fought against an ugly tide of anti-immigrant sentiment in the young republic, led by Hamilton’s Federalist party, which suggested that anyone without English heritage was a second-class citizen, and even challenged the rights of non-Anglos to hold office. In response, Burr insisted that anyone who contributed to society deserved all the rights of any other citizen, no matter their background.” Carey Wallace

In this essay, Wallace explains why Aaron Burr, the lifelong nemesis of founding father Alexander Hamilton, should be considered a historical hero. This essay exposes someone seen as a villain but much of society with a different take on their history.

It can be interesting to think about your definition of a hero. When describing what the term hero means to you, you may want to choose a person (or a few people) you look up to as a hero to solidify your point. You might want to include fictional characters (such as those in the Marvel universe) and real-life brave souls, such as police officers and firefighters.

A word of caution: stay away from the cliche opening of describing how the dictionary defines a hero. Instead, lead-in with a personal story about a hero who has affected your life. While talking about a public figure as a hero is acceptable, you may find it easier to write about someone close to you who you feel has displayed heroic qualities. Writing about a family member or friend who has shown up as a heroic main character in your life can be just as exciting as writing about a real or imagined superhero.

From Beowulf to Marvel comics, heroes in literature take on many different traits. When writing an essay on what trait makes a hero come alive in a short story, novel, or comic, choose a few of your favorite heroes and find common themes that they share.

Perhaps your favorite heroes are selfless and are willing to put themselves last in the name of sacrifice for others. Perhaps they’re able to dig deep into the truth, being honest even when it’s hard, for the greater good. There’s no need to list endless heroes to make your point—choosing three or four heroes from literature can be a great way to support your argument about what characteristics define heroism in literature.

When someone is named a hero in real life, we often picture them saving people from a burning building or performing a difficult surgical operation. It can be difficult to pin down exactly what constitutes a heroic act. When writing about what constitutes a heroic act, think about people who go above and beyond, performing feats of courage, honesty, and bravery to support themselves or others. When writing about what constitutes a heroic act, discuss real-life or literary examples of heroes at work.

To many people, being a hero means giving back to others. While giving something away or trading in one’s well-being for others can certainly be seen as a heroic act, many people wonder if selflessness is required for heroism or if a hero can serve the greater good in a way that also supports their happiness. When writing about whether selflessness is required for heroism, choose examples from literature and real-life to support your point.

Tip: If writing an essay sounds like a lot of work, simplify it. Write a simple 5 paragraph essay instead.

My Favourite Player Essay | My Favourite Cricketer MS Dhoni

December 1, 2023 by Sandeep

My Favourite Player Essay: My absolute personal favourite player whom I completely idolise is MS Dhoni. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on 7th July 1981. He is a cricketer par excellence and has formerly captained the Indian cricket team for the longest time. He is exceptionally talented and is a right-handed batsman.

He has been conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award and Padma Sri for his outstanding cricket achievements. Dhoni is an inspiration to the youth for his dedication, hard work, leadership qualities, and down-to-earth nature.

Essay on My Favourite Cricketer MS Dhoni

Below we have provided my favourite cricketer – MS Dhoni Essay in English, suitable for class 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10.

“It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” ~ Babe Ruth

The sports industry is full of inspirational and determined people. My favourite cricketer is Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has also earned names like Mahi, Captain Cool, and MSD. Dhoni is an international Indian cricketer who plays as a middle-order batsman and a wicket-keeper.

He is also known to be a finisher in many matches. He is the only cricketer under whose captainship India has won a trophy in every ICC format. In 2011, Dhoni was also featured in the TIME’s List of 100 Most Influential People in The World.

Dhoni was born in Ranchi, Jharkhand. In school, he used to play football. He played football at the district level and club level as a goalkeeper. His football coach asked him to try playing cricket.

Dhoni impressed everyone with his wicket-keeping skills and started focusing entirely on this game after the 10th standard. His favourite player at that time was Sachin Tendulkar , who he called his Hero.

In the early years of his career, Dhoni played school cricket and club cricket. He then played in the Ranji Trophy wherein he scored a half-century in his debut match.

From the years 2001 to 2003, Dhoni worked in the railways as a travelling ticket examiner. His colleagues remembered him to be honest and straight forward. After two years of working in the railways, Dhoni made his way back into cricket .

The Dhoni Era

Dhoni was picked up in the One Day International (ODI) India squad against Bangladesh. Dhoni was unable to make an impact in his first match as he got run out for a duck. But from the very next game, Dhoni started showing what he was really capable of doing. He scored an unbeaten 183 runs against Sri Lanka when Sachin Tendulkar gave away his wicket early in the game.

Dhoni helped India win matches under challenging situations. Whenever Dhoni came to bat, he accelerated the run rate and led India to victory. He was also holding the number one spot in ICC ODI Rankings in the year 2006.

Dhoni is an aggressive ball hitter and one of the fastest runners between the wickets. He is always praised by cricketers worldwide for his light speed stumping. He holds the record for the highest number of stumping by any wicket-keeper.

The starting of the 2007 Cricket World Cup was a bit rough for our beloved Dhoni. In two matches, he got out for zero. This agitated and angered some Indian political activists so much that they vandalised and damaged his house in Ranchi.

But Dhoni was not one to give up. He played some fantastic and record-breaking knocks after this episode. He regained his top spot in the ICC rankings, and his batting average per match reached a good 70 runs. Because of this spectacular display of performance, Dhoni was made the captain of the Indian cricket team in the year 2007.

Dhoni’s Captaincy

Dhoni is regarded as the most successful Indian captain, even by Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. It was under his captaincy that the Indian cricket team rose to the top spot in the ICC Rankings.

Under him, India won the 2011 Cricket World Cup. In the final against Sri Lanka, India had already lost three of its best batsmen. Dhoni promoted himself in the order and went out to bat before the in-form Yuvraj Singh.

He built a great partnership with Gautam Gambhir and ended the match for India with a six. He scored an unbeatable 91 runs and was also named the Man of the Match. The bat that he used in the match was auctioned and sold for Rs. 72 lakhs. All of this money went to his wife’s foundation that helps take care of and support orphaned children.

Dhoni has also captained the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was contracted by CSK for a hefty 1.5 million dollars in the year 2010, thus making him the most expensive player to be auctioned in IPL for the first season. Under his captainship, CSK were declared winners in the years 2010, 2011 and 2018.

Cristiano is not just good on the field; he’s also great off the field. He helps many people with his charity work. He has a big heart and gives a lot to those in need.

He trains very hard every day. His dedication to football is inspiring. Cristiano always wants to be the best, and he works hard for it. He eats healthy, exercises a lot, and practices his football skills all the time.

I also admire his confidence. Even in tough games, Cristiano believes he can win. He never gives up. When his team is behind, he tries even harder to score and help them win.

Cristiano Ronaldo is more than just a footballer to me. He is a role model. His passion for the game, his hard work, and his kindness inspire me. I hope to be as dedicated in my life as Cristiano is in his football.

Describe a Sportsperson you Admire

Describe a Sportsperson you Admire

In today’s lesson, we are going to look at a question from IELTS speaking part 2 that asks you to describe a sportsperson . I will help you analyze the question, make notes, give some useful language, and then I will give you a helpful sample answer.

Note: I have updated this post since it was originally written to include a video lesson. You can find that at the bottom of this page.

Cue Card: Describe a Sportsperson

Here’s a common question from IELTS Speaking Part 2:

Describe a sportsperson you admire. You should say: who the person is what sport he or she does when did you first hear about this person and why you admire him or her.

Hopefully, everyone reading this is at least familiar with some famous sports stars. You don’t need to be a fanatic to answer this question well… but it might help! You just need to be able to think of a person, describe what he or she does, when and where you first encountered this person, and give some reasons why you admire them.

describe a sportsperson: american football

As always, you should be writing some short notes in preparation, rather than any sentences. Remember that you really don’t have enough time to write more than a few words.

Note down any vocabulary that comes to mind and which you think will help. But mostly write down words that will help you to structure your speech – this makes your words sound more natural.

See our article on how to improve your IELTS speaking .

Here are my notes:

describe a sportsperson - Leo Messi

Leo Messi Argentina-> Barcelona Disability Awards 10 years ago Perseverance

These are obviously very basic, but by looking at them I can speak confidently without missing any of the points from the cue card. There are two useful words of vocabulary – disability and perseverance . These words, if properly used, sound impressive and add meaningfully to the speaking task. They are examples of “less common vocabulary” and can help improve your score.

It is helpful to have an idea about this cue card in your head before the exam. Certain topics often appear in IELTS speaking part 2 and you should be quite familiar with them before you sit the IELTS. Here are some guides to common topics:

Sample answer

I have highlighted some useful constructions for describing a famous person. These are useful for describing Leo Messi but of course can be adapted to other people. Some are quite basic – like “some would say” – while others are more complex, such as “his inspiring story of perseverance.”

Remember: you should never memorize answers for IELTS, but it is helpful to remember collocations – that means groups of words that are commonly used together.

So here is my answer to the cue card above:

My favourite sports person is Leo Messi. He’s a famous football player, and some would say he’s the best football player in the world. He started his career in Argentina, where he was born, but moved to Barcelona, in Spain, when he was a teenager. He had a disability, for which the Spanish team agreed to pay his medical bills. Despite his health problems, Messi developed into a modern legend . He has won numerous trophies over the course of his career , including five “world footballer of the year” awards – which is a world record. I remember first hearing about him about ten years ago, when he was first making headlines .  His life story caught my attention just as much as his incredible skills. I admire him because of his triumph over adversity . I think that his inspiring story of perseverance is a lesson for us all.

The phrases “making headlines” and “modern legend” are really useful for talking about famous people. You can incorporate these into your IELTS speaking part 2 answer like this.

Lebron James is a modern legend in the field of basketball. He has been making headlines for more than a decade.

More Sports Vocabulary

Sports is a common IELTS topic and it may occur in other parts of the exam, so make sure you know some basic vocabulary. If there is a sport that you really care about, learn some of the words that are commonly used to describe it. Here is a great collection of sports words to study.

One of the tricky things about sports in English is that there are some very subtle differences in language from sport to sport and between cultures. Here are some examples:

Basketball is played on a basketball court . Football is played on a football pitch . Baseball is played on a baseball field .

And so on. Knowing these slight differences can really help elevate your IELTS speaking score. Also, keep in mind that you are not describing a sport. Instead, you have been asked to describe a sportsperson. This means that you should be good with vocabulary for describing people .

YouTube Video

I have converted this lesson into a video format. If you want to hear me giving my sample answer in an audio recording, you can watch this video. You might find it useful to repeat my sentences to improve your pronunciation .

Ok, folks. That’s all for today’s lesson. I hope you are now able to describe a sportsperson. You can put your own ideas into the comment section below and I will give you some feedback.

I would like ti talk a bout Mohammed Shalah who is one of the most famous football player and some would say he’s the best football player in the world, he started his career in Egypt ,where he was born but moved to a lot of sports clubs in Europe until transported to Liverpool football club in England. There are several reasons but for me, I mention specifically him because I’m big fan of his play and performance . I have seen almost all of his matches with Liverpool club and consider him to one of the world’s most player also he is a source of motivation and inspiration after he has been a wared BBC prize for the best football player in England not only but also candidate from France football journal to win Africa Prize for the best football player in Africa. In the future, if I have a chance to meet him, I would definitely ask him for signature , take photos with and post on my Facebook wall,it will be a golden opportunity for me to talk with him, learn from and be inspired by this man.

Hi Adel. I have corrected this for you:

I would like to talk about Mohammed Shalah, who is one of the most famous football players and some would say he’s the best football player in the world. He started his career in Egypt, where he was born, but moved to a lot of sports clubs around Europe until he transferred to Liverpool football club in England. There are several reasons why I admire him but for me, the most important factor is that I’m big fan of his play and performance. I have seen almost all of his matches with Liverpool and consider him to one of the world’s best players. Also, he is a source of motivation and inspiration after he was been awarded BBC prize for the best football player in England. He was not only but also candidate from the French football journal to win the African Prize for the best football player in Africa but also… [I don’t know what you want to say here]. In the future, if I had a chance to meet him, I would definitely ask him for his autograph, take photos with him, and post them on my Facebook wall. It would be a golden opportunity for me to talk with him, learn from him, and be inspired by this man.
