Glance on Class 9 Maths Chapter 3 - Coordinate Geometry

The coordinate plane is a flat surface where a horizontal line (x-axis) and a vertical line (y-axis) intersect at a right angle, forming a grid system known as the Cartesian Plane or Coordinate Plane.

The axes divide the plane into four sections called quadrants, which are numbered I, II, III, and IV in an anti-clockwise direction starting from the positive x-axis.

Coordinates identify each point on a plane using an ordered pair of numbers (x, y). The x-coordinate, or abscissa, indicates the horizontal distance from the y-axis, while the y-coordinate, or ordinate, shows the vertical distance from the x-axis.

To plot a point's coordinates (x, y) on a graph, start at the origin (where the axes intersect), move x units to the right if x is positive or to the left if x is negative, and then move y units up if y is positive or down if y is negative.

The signs of the coordinates tell you in which quadrant the point lies.

Both positive (x, y) - Quadrant I

Negative x, positive y - Quadrant II

Both negative (x, y) - Quadrant III

Positive x, negative y - Quadrant IV

Exercise 3.1.

1. How will you describe the position of a table lamp on your study table to another person?

Ans: Consider the figure of a study stable given below, on which a study lamp is placed.

Lamp on the table

Consider the table as the rectangular plane and the lamp as a point. This table has a short edge and a long edge.

We can see that the distance of the lamp from the shorter edge is $15\ \text{cm}$ and from the longer edge, its $25\ \text{cm}$.

Therefore, depending on the order of the axes, we can conclude that the position of the lamp on the table can be described as $\left( 15,25 \right)$ or $\left( 25,15 \right)$.

2. (Street Plan): A city has two main roads which cross each other at the center of the city. These two roads are along the North-South direction and East-West direction.

All the other streets of the city run parallel to these roads and are \[200\text{ }m\] apart. There are $5$ streets in each direction. Using \[1\text{ }cm\text{ }=\text{ }200\text{ }m\] , draw a model of the city in your notebook. Represent the roads/streets by single lines. There are many cross- streets in your model. A particular cross- street is made by two streets, one running in the North–South direction and another in the East–West direction. Each cross street is referred to in the following manner: If the \[2nd\]  street running in the North–South direction and 5th in the East–West direction meet at some crossing, then we will call this cross-street \[\left( 2,\text{ }5 \right)\]. Using this convention, find:

i) How many cross - streets can be referred to as \[\left( 4,\text{ }3 \right)\] .

Ans: Draw two perpendicular lines depicting the two main roads of the city that cross each other at the center.

Mark it as \[NS\] and \[EW\] .

Consider the scale as \[1\text{ }cm\text{ }=\text{ }200\text{ }m\] .

Get the Figure given below by drawing five streets that are parallel to both the main roads,

Perpendicular lines depicting two main roads

From the Figure, we can see that there is only one cross street, which can be referred as \[\left( 4,\text{ }3 \right)\].

ii) How many cross - streets can be referred to as \[\left( 3,\text{ }4 \right)\] .

Ans: From the Figure, we can see that there is only one cross street, which can be referred to as \[\left( 3,\text{ }4 \right)\] .

Exercise 3.2

i) What is the name of horizontal and the vertical lines drawn to determine the position of any point in the Cartesian plane?

Ans:  X-axis is referred to as the horizontal line that is drawn to determine the position of any point in the Cartesian plane. Y-axis is the vertical line that is drawn to determine the position of any point in the Cartesian plane.

Cartesian plane

ii) What is the name of each part of the plane formed by these two lines?

Ans: Quadrant is the name of each part of the plane that is formed by x-axis and y-axis.

Different Quadrants

iii) Write the name of the point where these two lines intersect.

Ans: Origin $O$ is the point of intersection of \[x\] - axis and the $y$ - axis .

2. See the Figure, and write the following:

Different points and coordinates

i) The coordinates of \[B\].

Ans: Coordinates of point \[B\] is the distance of \[B\] from $x$ - axis and \[y\] - axis.

Therefore, the coordinates of point \[B\] are \[(-5,2)\].

ii) The coordinates of \[C\].

Ans: Coordinates of point \[C\] is the distance of point \[C\] from \[x\] - axis and \[y\] -axis.

Therefore, the coordinates of point \[C\] are \[(5,-5)\].

iii) The point identified by the coordinates \[(-3,-5)\].

Ans: The point that represents the coordinates \[(-3,-5)\]  is \[E\].

iv) The point identified by the coordinates \[(2,-4)\].

Ans: The point that represents the coordinates $(2,-4)$ is \[G\].

v) The abscissa of the point \[D\].

Ans: The abscissa of point \[D\] is the distance of point \[D\] from the $y$ - axis. Therefore, the abscissa of point \[D\] is $6$.

vi) The ordinate of the point \[H\].

Ans: The ordinate of point $H$ is the distance of point $H$ from the $x$ -axis. Therefore, the ordinate of point $H$ is $-3$.

vii) The coordinates of the point \[L\].

Ans: In the Figure, the coordinates of point \[L\] is the distance of point \[L\] from $x$ -axis and $y$ -axis. Therefore, the coordinates of point \[L\] are \[(0,5)\].

viii) The coordinates of the point \[M\].

Ans: In the Figure, the coordinates of point \[M\] is the distance of point \[M\] from $x$ -axis and $y$-axis. Therefore, the coordinates of point \[M\] are \[(-3,0)\].

3 children dead, 10 injured in mass stabbing at Taylor Swift-themed class in Southport

3rd assignment class 9

A third child has died in a mass stabbing that injured 10 others in Southport, U.K., Monday during a Taylor Swift -themed class meant for children, police said Tuesday.

A 9-year-old girl "died in hospital in the early hours" of Tuesday morning, Merseyside Police said in a news release . The two children who died Monday were 6 and 7 years old.

Five of the injured children "are in a critical condition," Tuesday's police statement said. "All those injured have suffered stab wounds sustained during the attack. Two adults are also in a critical condition after being injured during the incident," Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said Monday in a statement shared with USA TODAY.

A 17-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, Kennedy said, noting that he will be interviewed by detectives. The suspect is from the nearby coastal village of Banks and originally from Cardiff in Wales.

Police warned of misinformation regarding the arrest: "A name has been shared on social media in connection with the suspect in the incident in Southport. This name is incorrect and we would urge people not to speculate on details of the incident while the investigation is ongoing."

Taylor Swift makes statement after UK mass stabbing: 'These were just little kids'

Police were called to reports of a stabbing at 11:47 a.m. at an address in the seaside town of Southport in Merseyside, England.

"When they arrived they were shocked to find that multiple people, many of whom were children, had been subjected to a ferocious attack and had suffered serious injuries," Kennedy said.

"It is understood that the children were attending a Taylor Swift event at a dance school when the offender, who was armed with a knife, walked into the premises and started to attack those inside.  We believe that the adults who were injured were trying to protect the children at the time they were attacked."

The North West Ambulance Service said in a statement that casualties treated at the scene were transported by ambulance and air ambulance to "Alder Hey and Royal Manchester Children’s hospitals, along with Aintree, Southport and Formby District General and Ormskirk General hospitals."

UK police not investigating mass stabbing as 'terror-related' incident

BBC and The Telegraph reported that the stabbing took place at The Hart Space venue. A sold-out Swift-themed party – hosted by Enlighten Kids Yoga , a club meant for children 2 to 6 years old – was scheduled to take place between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. BST.

USA TODAY has reached out to The Hart Space and Enlighten for comment.

In a statement posted at 5:25 p.m. BST, Merseyside police said, "At this early stage, enquiries are ongoing to establish the motive for this tragic incident and we would urge people not to speculate while the investigation is ongoing."

"We can also confirm that the incident is not currently being treated as terror-related and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."

9-year-old becomes third child to die after U.K. mass stabbing attack at Taylor Swift dance class

Police officers near the scene in Hart Street.

A third child has died following Monday’s devastating mass stabbing attack in a seaside town in northwest England that left 10 others injured, authorities said.

The assailant entered Hart Space , a community center hosting a Taylor Swift-themed dance event for children in Seaport, and started to attack those inside with a knife.

Two girls, identified Tuesday as Bebe King, 6, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, were killed in the attack Monday. A 9-year-old girl, identified as Alice Dasilva Aguiar, died in the hospital early Tuesday as a result of injuries from the attack, Merseyside Police said in an update , bringing the death toll to three.

Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar.

King's family wrote a tribute that was shared by police: “No words can describe the devastation that has hit our family as we try to deal with the loss of our little girl Bebe.”

The family of Aguiar said: “Keep smiling and dancing like you love to do our Princess, like we said before to you, you’re always our princess and no one would change that. Love from Your Hero Daddy and Mummy.”

Eight other children suffered stab wounds and five were in critical condition. Two adults, who police said bravely tried to protect the children, are also in critical condition.

The 17-year-old suspect, described as a male from the nearby village of Banks, remains in police custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. His name was not released as he is a minor.

Police said that a knife was seized from the scene Monday.

Authorities said they were working on determining the motive for the bloodshed, but the incident is not being treated as terror-related. Police said they’re not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact police.

People leave flowers near the scene.

The brutal attack that appeared to target children has shocked the nation. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “horrendous and deeply shocking news.” King Charles III said he and Queen Camilla were were “profoundly shocked to hear of the utterly horrific incident in Southport” and offered their “most heartfelt condolences” to the families impacted.

Taylor Swift also voiced her shock on Tuesday, saying in an Instagram live post: “The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously and I’m just completely in shock.”

“These were just little kids at a dance class,” she added. “I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

The worst attack on children in the U.K. unfolded in 1996, when 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton shot 16 kindergarteners and their teacher dead in a school gymnasium in Dunblane, Scotland. The U.K. subsequently banned the private ownership of almost all handguns.

Mass shootings and killings with firearms are rare in Britain, where knives were used in about 40% of homicides up to March 2023.

Flowers and toys have been left at the center, once a site for expecting mothers and young children to come together, turned into a mourning ground for the small community.

Patrick Hurley, the member of Parliament for Southport, said in a statement Monday that he was heading to Southport from Westminster. “This is shocking news for our community, but we will stand strong against this mindless violence and I will work with other community leaders to help our town and our community pull through this horrific incident,” Hurley said.

A third young girl died early Tuesday from the previous day’s mass stabbing at a  Taylor Swift-themed dance event in the UK .

Alice Aguiar, 9, “died in hospital in the early hours of this morning,” Merseyside Police said, while identifying the two girls who died earlier Monday as Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Bebe King, the youngest at just 6.

Five of the eight other children injured remained in critical condition Tuesday, as do the two adults stabbed while trying to save the children , police have said.

“No words can describe the devastation that has hit our family as try to deal with the loss of our little girl Bebe,” the 6-year-old girl’s family said.

Aguiar’s mom, Alexandra Aguiar, shared an emotional tribute to her “Princess Alice.”

“In this moment of great pain my soul hurts, my body hurts, my mind hurts. I have a lump in my throat. You were just an innocent child, a happy smiley girl with a bright life ahead of you which a despicable human being took away from you, without pity, for no reason,” she wrote on Facebook,  according to the Liverpool Echo.

“Look after your mum and dad who are suffering, who are desolate and broken. Fly high our little star. I love you,” the grieving mom added.

A GoFundMe for the family, started by the Benridge Care Group, where one of the slain girl’s parents works, had raised over $1,400 as of Tuesday morning.

“Alice is the daughter of one of our team here & she has been a part of the Good Companions family since she was a baby, joining in with many of our activities & events with our families & staff,” the fundraiser notes.

A 17-year-old suspect is still being interviewed by cops, who have yet to offer a possible motive but say it is “not currently being treated as terror-related.”

He has not been identified, and police warned Tuesday that a name being spread online “is incorrect .”

Witnesses said the teenager wore a “black hood” when he entered the Hart Space in Southport, just outside Liverpool, during their advertised “morning of Taylor Swift-themed yoga, dance and bracelet making.”

At least 25 children from the ages of 6 to 11 were at the event when the brutal attack unfolded — with the knifeman reportedly pulling up in a taxi, witnesses said.

Officers called to the scene “were shocked to find that multiple people, many of whom were children, had been subjected to a ferocious attack and had serious injuries,” Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said.

Swift said early Tuesday that she was “completely in shock” at the deadly attack.

“The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously and I’m just completely in shock,” the pop superstar wrote to fans.

“These were just little kids at a dance class,” the “Love Story” singer said.

“The loss of life and innocence and the horrendous trauma inflicted on everyone who was there,” she said, adding, “I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to their families.”

Third Child, a 9-Year-Old Girl, Dies After Stabbing at Taylor Swift-Themed Event in Southport

Two girls aged 6 and 7 years old also died in the knife attack on July 29, police confirmed

3rd assignment class 9

A third child has died following a stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class in Southport, England.

On Tuesday, July 30, Merseyside Police confirmed in a news release obtained by PEOPLE that a 9-year-old girl had died in the early hours of the morning from injuries sustained in the knife attack, which took place at around 11:50 a.m. local time the previous day.

"We can confirm that the children who died yesterday were girls aged six and seven years," police added of the other two victims.

"Eight other children suffered stab wounds sustained during the attack, and five of them are in a critical condition," the release continued. "Two adults are also in a critical condition after being injured during the incident."

"Our specialist Family Liaison Officers are providing support to the families at this terrible time," the news release added.

Police confirmed officers had arrested a 17-year-old male from the village of Banks in Lancashire. "This incident is not currently being treated as terror-related and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it," police said.

The incident took place at a property on Hart Street. The event was advertised for kids between the ages of 6 and 11 and had been scheduled to take place between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. local time.

Witness Colin Parry, owner of Masters Vehicle Body Repairs which is situated next to where the stabbing took place, told BBC 5Live of the incident, "We all ran out and there's young kids, all bleeding."

“It was the worst thing I’ve seen ever in my life,” Parry said, adding that many of the children had been taken into a nearby home. "Why? Why would you do these things to these kids? It's horrific."

Per the BBC, Parry also told the Press Association that mothers were "screaming," comparing it to "a scene from a horror movie."

Eye on Southport journalist Tim Johnson told the BBC that he arrived about 20 minutes after police were called.

Recalling how he saw a girl on a stretcher, he told the outlet, "Her parents were running after her. It was horrendous. I’ve never seen anything like it ... I saw ambulance men and women in tears. People were in tears in the streets."

Following the attack, Taylor Swift shared a message on her Instagram Stories on Tuesday.

The singer wrote , "The horror of yesterday's attack in Southport is washing over me continuously, and I'm just completely in shock... The loss of life and innocence, and the horrendous trauma inflicted on everyone who was there, the families and first responders."

"These were just little kids at a dance class," she added. "I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families."

  • 9-year-old girl wounded in UK stabbing incident died on Tuesday
  • The death toll in the stabbing attack rises to 3
  • Eight children and two adults remain hospitalised after the attack in Southport

A 9-year-old girl wounded in a stabbing attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class in northwestern England died Tuesday, bringing the death toll to three, as police questioned a 17-year-old suspect arrested minutes after the rampage.

Merseyside Police said the other fatalities were girls aged 6 and 7.

Eight children and two adults remain hospitalised after the attack in Southport. Both adults and five of the children are in critical condition.

Swift said she was “completely in shock” and still taking in “the horror” of the event.

“These were just little kids at a dance class,” she wrote on Instagram. “I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Local people left flowers and stuffed animals in tribute at a police cordon on the street lined with brick houses in the seaside resort near Liverpool — nicknamed “sunny Southport” — whose beach and pier attract vacationers from across northwest England.

Witnesses described scenes “from a horror movie” as bloodied children ran from the attack just before noon on Monday. The suspect was arrested soon after on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Police said he was born in Cardiff, Wales, and had lived for years in a village about 3 miles (5 kilometers) from Southport. He has not yet been charged.

Police said detectives are not treating Monday’s attack as terror-related and they are not looking for any other suspects.

“We believe the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked,” Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said.

It is the latest shocking attack in a country where a recent rise in knife crime has stoked anxieties and led to calls for the government to do more to clamp down on bladed weapons.

Witnesses described hearing screams and seeing children covered in blood emerging from the Hart Space, a community center that hosts everything from pregnancy workshops and meditation sessions to women’s boot camps.

The attack happened during a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance workshop for children aged about 6 to 11.

“They were in the road, running from the nursery,” said Bare Varathan, who owns a shop nearby. “They had been stabbed, here, here, here, everywhere,” he said, indicating the neck, back and chest.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack “horrendous and deeply shocking.” King Charles III sent his “condolences, prayers and deepest sympathies” to those affected by the “utterly horrific incident.”

Prince William and his wife Catherine said that “as parents, we cannot begin to imagine what the families, friends and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport today are going through.”

Colin Parry, who owns a nearby auto body shop, told The Guardian that the suspect arrived by taxi.

“He came down our driveway in a taxi and didn’t pay for the taxi, so I confronted him at that point,” Parry was quoted as saying. “He was quite aggressive, he said, ‘What are you gonna do about it?’”

Parry said most of the victims appeared to be young girls.

“The mothers are coming here now and screaming,” Parry said. “It is like a scene from a horror movie. ... It’s like something from America, not like sunny Southport.”

Britain’s worst attack on children occurred in 1996, when 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton shot 16 kindergarteners and their teacher dead in a school gymnasium in Dunblane, Scotland. The U.K. subsequently banned the private ownership of almost all handguns.

Mass shootings and killings with firearms are rare in Britain, where knives were used in about 40% of homicides in the year to March 2023. Published By: Vadapalli Nithin Kumar Published On: Jul 30, 2024 READ | 2 children dead in 'ferocious' knife attack at UK dance workshop, teen arrested

CBSE Class 9 History Notes Chapter 3 – Nazism and the Rise of Hitler

Birth of the weimar republic.

In the early years of the twentieth century, Germany fought the First World War (1914-1918) alongside the Austrian Empire and against the Allies (England, France and Russia.). All resources of Europe were drained out because of the war. Germany occupied France and Belgium. But, unfortunately, the Allies, strengthened by the US entry in 1917, won, defeating Germany and the Central Powers in November 1918. At Weimar, the National Assembly met and established a democratic constitution with a federal structure. In the German Parliament, deputies were elected on the basis of equal and universal votes cast by all adults, including women. Germany lost its overseas colonies. The War Guilt Clause held Germany responsible for the war and the damages the Allied countries suffered. The Allied armies occupied Rhineland in the 1920s.

The Effects of the War

The entire continent was devastated by the war, both psychologically and financially. The war of guilt and national humiliation was carried by the Republic, which was financially crippled by being forced to pay compensation. Socialists, Catholics and Democrats supported the Weimar Republic, and they were mockingly called the ‘November criminals’. The First World War left a deep imprint on European society and polity. Soldiers are placed above civilians, but unfortunately, soldiers live a miserable life. Democracy was a young and fragile idea which could not survive the instabilities of interwar Europe.

Political Radicalism and Economic Crises

The Weimar Republic’s birth coincided with the revolutionary uprising of the Spartacist League on the pattern of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. They crushed the uprising with the help of a war veterans organisation called Free Corps. Communists and Socialists became enemies. Political radicalisation was heightened by the economic crisis of 1923. Germany refused to pay, and the French occupied its leading industrial area, Ruhr, to claim their coal. The image of Germans carrying cartloads of currency notes to buy a loaf of bread was widely publicised, evoking worldwide sympathy. This crisis came to be known as hyperinflation, a situation when prices rise phenomenally high.

The Years of Depression

The years between 1924 and 1928 saw some stability. The support of short-term loans was withdrawn when the Wall Street Exchange crashed in 1929. The Great Economic Depression started, and over the next three years, between 1929 and 1932, the national income of the USA fell by half. The economy of Germany was the worst hit. Workers became jobless and went on streets with placards saying, ‘Willing to do any work’. Youths indulged themselves in criminal activities. The middle class and small businessmen were filled with the fear of proletarianisation, anxiety of being reduced to the ranks of the working class or unemployment. Politically also, the Weimar Republic was fragile. The Weimar Constitution, due to some inherent defects, made it unstable and vulnerable to dictatorship. One inherent defect was proportional representation. Another defect was Article 48, which gave the President the powers to impose emergency, suspend civil rights and rule by decree.

Hitler’s Rise to Power

Hilter rose to power. He was born in 1889 in Austria and spent his youth in poverty. In the First World War, he enrolled on the army, acted as a messenger in the front, became a corporal, and earned medals for bravery. Hitler joined a small group called the German Workers’ Party in 1919. He took over the organisation and renamed it the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, which later came to be known as the Nazi Party. In 1923, he planned to seize control of Bavaria, march to Berlin and capture power. During the Great Depression, Nazism became a mass movement. After 1929, banks collapsed, businesses shut down, workers lost their jobs, and the middle classes were threatened with destitution. In such a situation, Nazi propaganda stirred hopes of a better future.

Hitler was a powerful speaker, and his words moved people. In his speech, he promised to build a strong nation, undo the injustice of the Versailles Treaty and restore the dignity of the German people. He also promised employment for those looking for work and a secure future for the youth. He promised to remove all foreign influences and resist all foreign ‘conspiracies’ against Germany. Hitler started following a new style of politics, and his followers held big rallies and public meetings to demonstrate support. According to the Nazi propaganda, Hitler was called a messiah, a saviour, and someone who had arrived to deliver people from their distress.

The Destruction of Democracy

President Hindenburg offered the Chancellorship, on 30 January 1933, the highest position in the cabinet of ministers, to Hitler. The Fire Decree of 28 February 1933 suspended civic rights like freedom of speech, press and assembly that had been guaranteed by the Weimar Constitution. On 3 March 1933, the famous Enabling Act was passed, which established a dictatorship in Germany. The state took control over the economy, media, army and judiciary. Apart from the already existing regular police in a green uniform and the SA or the Storm Troopers, these included the Gestapo (secret state police), the SS (the protection squads), criminal police and the Security Service (SD).

Reconstruction

Economic recovery was assigned to the economist Hjalmar Schacht by Hitler, who aimed at full production and full employment through a state-funded work-creation programme. This project produced the famous German superhighways and the people’s car, the Volkswagen. Hitler ruled out the League of Nations in 1933, reoccupied the Rhineland in 1936, and integrated Austria and Germany in 1938 under the slogan, One people, One empire and One leader. Schacht advised Hitler against investing hugely in rearmament as the state still ran on deficit financing.

The Nazi Worldview

Nazis are linked to a system of belief and a set of practices. According to their ideology, there was no equality between people but only a racial hierarchy. The racism of Hitler was borrowed from thinkers like Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer. The argument of the Nazis was simple: the strongest race would survive, and the weak ones would perish. The Aryan race was the finest who retained its purity, became stronger and dominated the world. The other aspect of Hitler’s ideology related to the geopolitical concept of Lebensraum, or living space. Hitler intended to extend German boundaries by moving eastwards to concentrate all Germans geographically in one place.

Establishment of the Racial State

Nazis came into power and quickly began to implement their dream of creating an exclusive racial community of pure Germans. They wanted a society of ‘pure and healthy Nordic Aryans’. Under the Euthanasia Programme, Helmuth’s father had condemned to death many Germans who were considered mentally or physically unfit. Germany occupied Poland and parts of Russia captured civilians and forced them to work as slave labour. Jews remained the worst sufferers in Nazi Germany. Hitler hated Jews based on pseudoscientific theories of race. From 1933 to 1938, the Nazis terrorised, pauperised and segregated the Jews, compelling them to leave the country.

The Racial Utopia

Genocide and war became two sides of the same coin. Poland was divided, and much of north-western Poland was annexed to Germany.

People of Poland were forced to leave their homes and properties. Members of the Polish intelligentsia were murdered in large numbers, and Polish children who looked like Aryans were forcibly snatched from their mothers and examined by ‘race experts’.

Youth in Nazi Germany

Hitler was interested in the youth of the country. Schools were cleansed and purified. Germans and Jews were not allowed to sit or play together. In the 1940s, Jews were taken to the gas chambers. Introduction of racial science to justify Nazi ideas of race. Children were taught to be loyal and submissive, hate Jews and worship Hitler. Youth organisations were responsible for educating German youth in ‘the spirit of National Socialism’. At the age of 14, boys had to join the Nazi youth organisation where they were taught to worship war, glorify aggression and violence, condemn democracy, and hate Jews, communists, Gypsies and all those categorised as ‘undesirable’. Later, they joined the Labour Service at the age of 18 and served in the armed forces and entered one of the Nazi organisations. In 1922, the Youth League of the Nazis was founded.

The Nazi Cult of Motherhood

In Nazi Germany, children were told women were different from men. Boys were taught to be aggressive, masculine and steel-hearted and girls were told to become good mothers and rear pure-blooded Aryan children. Girls had to maintain the purity of the race, distance themselves from Jews, look after their homes and teach their children Nazi values. But all mothers were not treated equally. Honours Crosses were awarded to those who encouraged women to produce more children. Bronze cross for four children, silver for six and gold for eight or more. Women who maintained contact with Jews, Poles and Russians were paraded through the town with shaved heads, blackened faces and placards hanging around their necks announcing, ‘I have sullied the honour of the nation’.

The Art of Propaganda

Nazis termed mass killings as special treatment, the final solution (for the Jews), euthanasia (for the disabled), selection and disinfection. ‘Evacuation’ meant deporting people to gas chambers. Gas chambers were labelled as ‘‘disinfection areas’, and looked like bathrooms equipped with fake showerheads. Nazi ideas were spread through visual images, films, radio, posters, catchy slogans and leaflets. Orthodox Jews were stereotyped and marked and were referred to as vermin, rats and pests. The Nazis made equal efforts to appeal to all the different sections of the population. They sought to win their support by suggesting that Nazis alone could solve all their problems.

Ordinary People and the Crimes Against Humanity

People started seeing the world through Nazi eyes and spoke their Nazi language. They felt hatred and anger against Jews and genuinely believed Nazism would bring prosperity and improve general well-being. Pastor Niemoeller protested an uncanny silence amongst ordinary Germans against brutal and organised crimes committed in the Nazi empire. Charlotte Beradt’s book called ‘The Third Reich of Dreams’ describes how Jews themselves began believing in the Nazi stereotypes about them.

Knowledge about the Holocaust

The war ended and Germany was defeated. While Germans were preoccupied with their own plight, the Jews wanted the world to remember the atrocities and sufferings they had endured during the Nazi killing operations – also called the Holocaust. When they lost the war, the Nazi leadership distributed petrol to its functionaries to destroy all incriminating evidence available in offices.
