The King's Careers Blog

We're here to help you, whether you are in the discover, focus or action phase of your career journey., application advice: applying to psychology internships and placements in the uk.

This post is written by Natasha Lindsay, a 2nd year PhD student at the IOPPN Department of Psychology researching neurocognitive and behavioural development of infants with epilepsy. She has been an Application Adviser with Kings’s Careers and Employability since September 2022.

Applying to psychology internships and placements in the UK can be a daunting task, but also a hugely valuable step in your career journey. They offer opportunities for practical experience, networking, and skill development which should leave you well equipped to pursue a career in a field of Psychology (and elsewhere!). More than anything, it can help you to nail down exactly what speciality, or patient/client group you are interested in working with and supporting. My own experience of undertaking a one-year psychology placement confirmed my passion for clinical research and learning more about child neurodevelopment – something I couldn’t have been sure of without undertaking the placement year. In this blog, we will discuss some tips for applying to psychology internships and placements in the UK.

Start early and research thoroughly

The first step in applying for psychology internships and placements is to start researching as early as possible, and certainly before application deadlines approach. Look for opportunities online, and check with King’s to see if they have any recommendations, for example the Psychology department provide unique partnerships with the South London & Maudsley Hospital (SLaM) and clinician-scientists that allow placements and voluntary work for students. Make a list of the placements or internships that interest you and their requirements. Ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria and that the placement aligns with your career aspirations.

Make connections and network

I’d also recommend being self-motivated and pro-active in reaching out to professionals within the place of work that you’re interested in. As you may be aware, within the field of psychology this could span a range of workplaces e.g., primary, secondary and higher education institutions, hospitals, labs, the NHS or the private sector. Don’t be afraid to send an enquiry or expression of interest email to a research group or clinical psychology team to share your interest in their work and let them know you’d be keen to shadow/intern if opportunities arise. Here you can also give them a flavour of your own psychology interests and background (although keep it short and sweet!).

Tailor your application to the placement

When applying for psychology internships and placements, it is essential to tailor your application to the placement. Review the job description and person specification carefully, and ensure that you address all the requirements in your application. Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to highlight your skills and experiences that align with the placement’s requirements. Also, remember to draw from the full breadth of experience that you have gained, both professionally and throughout your education to demonstrate why you would be the best candidate.

Highlight your skills and experiences

When applying for psychology internships and placements, you should highlight your skills and experiences that align with the placement’s requirements. This can include your academic achievements, research experience, clinical skills, relevant training you have had and any relevant work experience. Provide evidence of your skills and experiences, such as examples of projects you have worked on, technical/lab skills you have developed, voluntary activities you’re involved with, training courses you have completed or patient/client facing work you’ve had.

Get feedback on your application

Before submitting your application, get feedback from King’s Careers and Employability centre and/or a supervisor. They can provide feedback on your application’s structure, content, and presentation. To make the most of this opportunity, come along with a CV which outlines the highlights from your education and professional experience. This will help them to identify areas of your application that need improvement.

Prepare for the interview

If your application is successful, you will be invited to an interview. Prepare for the interview by researching the organisation and preparing responses to both common interview questions, and those which are more specific to the field you are applying for. Competency and situational-based questions are common in many fields of psychology so it is worth brushing up on these types of questions. KEATS have great resources for practice interview and test preparation too. Practice your responses with a friend or family member, or with an adviser at King’s Careers and Employability Centre , and ensure that you are confident and articulate in your responses.

Biomedical Summer Research in London

Next summer, conduct your own research project at one of the world’s leading institutions with this unique program at The School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences (BMEIS) at King’s College London. The program is designed to develop your academic knowledge and skills as a foundation for postgraduate study, while giving you the independence to conduct your research under the supervision of an experienced advisor.

Exciting project choices range from: Estimating cardiac output from the arterial blood pressure signal; to Detecting atrial fibrillation from wearable sensor signals, and Using smart wearables to identify patients at risk of falls.

BMEIS’s research focuses on applying fundamental engineering techniques to address clinical problems. The School is based at St. Thomas’ Hospital in central London and works collaboratively with clinicians to ensure that its work is directed towards unmet patient needs. Your project will fit within these goals.

In addition to your chosen project work in the lab and studying, you’ll attend seminars on academic writing, meet with your advisor weekly and have the option of attending additional seminars on discipline-specific skills. You’ll also have a mentor to help settle any questions you may have. You’ll present and discuss your scientific paper at the end of the program.

  • You’ll also take part in many cultural excursions and activities planned by Arcadia London Center staff. These experiences will open up this cosmopolitan city to you and help you gain an understanding of this dynamic, multicultural society.

Project SEARCH is a national programme for people aged 18 to 24 years old with learning disabilities and/or autism to gain work experience. The programme provides real life work experience combined with opportunities to develop life skills to help young people with learning difficulties make successful transitions from school to adult life. Project SEARCH is a collaboration with the DFN Foundation. The programme began in the UK in 2008 and today runs over 70 schemes throughout the UK and Europe. They have supported more than 1,500 young people into paid work.

We are working with DFN Project SEARCH, Lambeth College, London South East Colleges, Lambeth Council, Bromley Council, Unity Works and Mencap to facilitate placements for interns from September 2023.

Our interns

The interns will gain a year’s worth of experience in different departments of the hospital, including clinical areas, clinical support services and corporate services. The placements they undertake are assigned based on their skills, abilities and interests.

Each intern will spend 10 to 12 weeks in each of their three placements before graduating in July 2024.

A member of King’s staff will provide mentorship to each intern. The mentor will work alongside them during their placement, providing training and guidance. The interns also receive support to complete their final year of education from their on-site job coach and tutor.

KCL - MSc Banking and Finance

  • The program structure - 6 months of teaching followed by 3 months of dissertation. ,
  • The course was quite practical in terms of the knowledge imparted and the skills developed. ,
  • The faculty in the 2nd trimester was industry professionals who shared industry insights.
  • The dissertation support was minimal and it wasn't conducted in an ideal manner. ,
  • The cohort was mostly people with 0-1 years of work experience and not as diverse as I was expecting.

I chose this college because of the reputation and rankings of the university and its location being London. My overall experience was good, with a few pros and cons as mentioned above.

Tuition fees - £35,500 for 2022-23. It comes to about 40 lakhs in INR terms but might have increased now.

Great experience

  • I like the Campus.
  • I dislike the Assessment Methods (More exams than practical application)

My main motivation for choosing this college was that they provided a unique list of modules that were not available in other top-ranking colleges.

KCL MSc Neuroscience review

  • King's College London is an esteemed college, has a good world ranking, and is quite well known so that is beneficial. ,
  • Academically, the structure of the syllabus is very clear. You will always have an idea at the very beginning of the course, about when you submit each assignment and where the exams will be held. ,
  • You are well informed about the career options after the course. Opportunities to network with people in different fields. ,
  • King's College London has 4 campuses across main London, wherein the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IOPPN) is a separate campus in itself. ,
  • Travelling to any of these campuses is very accessible and you can use any of them. For example, there are libraries on all campuses. Almost all campuses have at least one 24/7 library. ,
  • Teachers are very warm and kind. You can always approach them.
  • There is no placement as such. You can find career fairs happening on campus and career mentors. However, there is no placement cell. ,
  • The lab experience for everyone will be different. Which can be considered good or bad. However, for a dissertation, you can rank the projects you want to work on, and if you end up getting a lower rank of your preference, then you might not get the kind of research experience you want. You can always opt to reach out individually to researchers in that case.

I chose this college as I really loved their website specifically for Neuroscience. Exposure to using fMRI, and brain histology really motivated me to apply for an MSc in Neuroscience at KCL. This course allowed me to choose a speciality out of neuroimaging, neurodegeneration, cognitive neuroscience and neural stem cells - all topic very much in demand in neuroscience research. Out of three offers that I got, KCL was the best university ranking wise, exposure wise, location wise. My overall experience was definitely very good especially because of the support by teachers, who were always very helpful and kind.

Fees for MSc 2022-2023 - 33 lakhs INR (must have increased now) Student accommodation - 12 lakhs for a year

Insight into KCL

  • Stellar Academics, Good Extracurricular activities, Inclusive campus and welcoming students, Proximity to the best locations (Corporate Offices help with open days), Stellar Faculty , Emphasis on Applied Learning
  • Major emphasis on self-studying (less hand-held support), Assessment arrangements can sometimes be "not ideal", Cost of Living

I chose my course, particularly King's because I did not know what I wanted to do at the time of applying but I had a rough idea that it would be something related to economics and the field of finance which is why I chose economics and management which has a good mix of both quantitative and qualitative learning.

Total tuition fees of all 3 years is- £90000 which is approximately 90 Lakhs

Masters at King’s College London

  • It is a one-year course that is really extensive and creative in its structure. We have to work really hard but it keeps us motivated.

I chose this college because of it's ranking and referral from knowns. The university is in London. The college ranking (under the top 40) mainly.

33,000 £ or more

KCL - PG review.

  • I love how the people and professors are.
  • I dislike that the entire exam system is just like schools while I prefer to have continuous assessment. ,
  • It is also that while there is a careers office to help you with resume writing, a university job portal and all, no placement team is there which brings companies to campuses. So it is quite hard to get jobs on your own.

I chose King's because of the programme as it is interdisciplinary, as well as it was a blend of Economics and Policy, the two subjects which I preferred to do. The campus is also located in Central London which is perfect to network and connect with industry professionals.

The total tuition fee is around 27,540 pounds which translates to 27.5 Lakhs INR. It is paid in two instalments, one per term.

Believe it, Do it, Achieve it!

  • Excellent infrastructure that helps the students to develop skills and remove any hindrances in their research. ,
  • Really equipped and updated with the latest technology. Great career-building activities providing real-world exposure. ,
  • Learned and experienced staff that are working in their respective fields for almost 20 to 30 years. So, you can understand the knowledge base they must have.
  • Placement cell not so efficient. Fewer opportunities and guidance.

My university is known for the efficient and learned staff along with the unique body of researches conducted at the institute. It is known as the best for finance courses and industry exposure programmes. Hence, this was the main point that attracted me to select this university and gain profound knowledge.

33000 pounds per year

Days in my Life at King's College

I chose the university for its high global ranking (15th in the world) and excellent reputation. I was also impressed by their focus on psychiatric and neurological research which is what I am interested in pursuing.

27,000GBP (Standard international student fee).

Incredibly Flexible program of Biomedical Sciences

I have chosen this university because of the immaculate course. The course has incredible flexibility as in Y2 you can choose very tailored modules to yourself after a Y1 which is a taster of the wide range of modules. These include: anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, neuroscience, pharmacology, cell biology among others. The campus is also situated in the heart of London with walking journey to attractions such as London eye, tower bridge etc.

£9250/- for UK residents

Fun but hard work, but enough time to enjoy London life, do sport and make lifelong friends

More integrated curriculum with placement earlier on, rather than 3 years of pure science which I would not have enjoyed. London life seemed fun and exciting.

The King’s community is dedicated to the service of society. King’s Strategic Vision 2029 sets out our vision for the future, shaped around five priority areas: educate to inspire and improve; research to inform and innovate; serve to shape and transform; a civic university at the heart of London; and an international community that services the world. Our ambitious Education Strategy sets out the actions that we must take to transform how we teach, how and where our students learn and how we support them during their time with us.

We are excited to be recruiting to the role of Senior Library Assistant (Research Support) at a time when Open Research has never been more important. Our Open Research team is responsible for working with King’s researchers in an exciting, complex, and fast-moving area. The team works to support the curation and dissemination of scholarly outputs – support for open access publishing, REF, research data management, and copyright; alongside the provision of an interlending service and wide range of subscription-based library resources.

Libraries & Collections comprises four departments: Education & Learning, Research & Impact, Service Design & Delivery, along with Business Operations. We are part of the Students & Education Directorate, which manages the student lifecycle from application to graduation and beyond.

About the role

Open Research is an innovative and growing area of service provision. Senior Library Assistants within the Research Support wing of the team provide support to King’s researchers in curating and disseminating their scholarly outputs to a wide audience.

This is an exciting opportunity for candidates looking to work within open research, who wish to utilise their skills in understanding, organising, and explaining complex information. This is an opportunity to grow skills in navigating the scholarly publishing landscape and helping to educate King’s research community about our services - supporting them with achieving impacts with their research findings.

We encourage applications from candidates who have experience from both within and outside of the higher education sector where they can demonstrate the skills needed to succeed in this role.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract if successful.

All grade 4 staff are assigned a placement brief within a particular team but may be moved across to a different placement brief elsewhere within Libraries & Collections in order to support service needs or your development.

All Libraries & Collections staff are encouraged to take responsibility for their own performance and development, through agreeing clear objectives, maintaining professional awareness, participating in professional networks, and reflecting on own performance. We expect all colleagues to role-model a positive, proactive, flexible, and committed approach that encourages others.

You will be required to participate in frontline services as required, including contributing towards a rota for evening and weekend working.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria
