Maybe unlimited data is unnecessary. Maybe you need to curtail data usage by employees based on projects and location. If this situation sounds familiar, then consider an AT&T Mobile Select pooled data plan. With these plans, you still get unlimited talk and text along with a pool of shared data that you can assign to members of your plan.

How does that work? Let's say you sign up for 9 Gb of mobile data, with three of your employees signed up to your plan. With the Mobile Select plan, you can assign data limits to each employee within the 9 GB – so each of them can have a monthly limit of 3 Gb, or two can have 1.5 GB while the third has 6 GB. You have the complete freedom to assign your mobile data as you see fit.

Pooled plans also come with the same unlimited talk and text, plus AT&T Stream Saver. Stream Saver limits video quality to 480p (roughly DVD quality) while a phone is on the mobile network, so that streaming video doesn't use all of that monthly data. Once that phone is on a Wi-Fi network or attached to an AT&T hotspot, it will switch over to allow HD video.

AT&T is a top-ranking network provider that offers competitive cell phone plans for businesses of all sizes.

When looking at AT&T's strongest competitors T-Mobile and Verizon , the carrier does fall short in affordability, speed, and network coverage . Currently, Verizon leads the race as the carrier with the most network coverage across the United States. However, AT&T does provide better speed, coverage, and more features than T-Mobile, and its plans are more affordable than Verizon.

AT&T provides users with good coverage, a wide selection of plans and smartphones, and good international perks . In addition, the carrier is extremely accessible as the network provider has stores in almost every city. AT&T is also ideal for businesses and users that require strong streaming quality.

AT&T's plans are not the most affordable options available, especially for startups and businesses with small budgets. Furthermore, the carrier does have relatively low data deprioritization thresholds on unlimited plans, and the carrier reserves the right to throttle data speeds for all users during peak periods.

Reputation:

Most customers have been impressed with AT&T's quick setup and connection process. However, we did find more than five reviews where customers had issues with billing. In these cases, customers were either mistakenly billed or overcharged for services. Furthermore, AT&T's customer service needs some improvement, as customers have complained about poor support both online and in-store.

AT&T vs. T-Mobile:

T-Mobile and AT&T both offer similar features, such as unlimited data, text, and talk, and no roaming charges in Mexico and Canada. T-Mobile is the more affordable plan, charging $60.00 per month compared to $65.00 with AT&T. AT&T features Call Protect Basic for compatible devices; however, T-Mobile does offer greater network coverage.

However, both provide additional perks like AT&T's Call Protect Basic service and Verizon's free Apple subscription for the first six months.

AT&T offers a total of six Share Plus plans, with prices ranging between $50.00 and $750.00 per month, depending on the amount of data and phone lines your business requires.

Unlimited Starter:

The Starter plan is AT&T's lowest priced plan, with prices starting at $65.00 per month for one line. However, this price may decrease to $35.00 with the AutoPay and paperless billing discount. This plan is best suited for startups and small businesses who only require basic features, such as standard definition video streaming, unlimited domestic data, talk, and text on up to 10 eligible devices, as well as unlimited talk and text to Canada and Mexico.

Unlimited Performance:

The Performance plan starts at $75.00 per month for one line and comes equipped with the exact same features as the Starter plan, including unlimited text, talk, and data, both domestic and in Canada and Mexico. However, the Performance does include a few additional features, such as HD video streaming (with Stream Saver turned off), 30GB mobile hotspot data per line, and access to 5G+ and 5G service where each is available.

Unlimited Elite:

The Elite plan is the perfect fit for streamers and businesses that require fast internet. The Elite plan features 5G-enabled technology, fast tracker, 100GB mobile hotspot data per line, HD and 4K Ultra HD video streaming, as well as unlimited text, talk, and data.

However, there's also a little-known standalone unlimited data tablet plan, which is $30/month that can be purchased ala carte without other lines of service.

There is little information available on the current details of the plan as it's not listed on their business page, we have found an official PDF from AT&T Business describing the plan . The plan has network management after 22GB of usage, includes some high-speed mobile hotspot use (assumed to be at 10GB), and HD video streaming (if Video Management is turned off). 

Note that the price of this plan increased from $20/month to $30/month in early 2023.

It is listed in AT&T's system as "AT&T Unlimited Tablet." Previous versions were called "Unlimited For iPad" and "Unlimited for Tablet." You'll have to find a rep who knows about this plan over the phone or in a corporate store to activate it on a cellular-enabled tablet. 

This is a post-paid plan for tablets only, with a $50 activation fee.

Wireless Broadband

Top Pick Notes : The Wireless Broadband Plans include unlimited data, with different price points for different speed thresholds. They include 5G access and can be used with  AT&T compatible cellular embedded routers or mobile hotspots that have at least a Cat-11  cellular modem. While they are intended for business customers, they are eligible for mobile use.

AT&T offers a lineup of Wireless Broadband plans which are tiered-speed data plans for hotspots and routers. They are intended to be a primary, failover, or temporary connection for business needs and an easy-to-set-up option for new and remote business locations. They include unlimited data, are priced by the rated speed cap and prioritization threshold, and all include 5G access. 

When first introduced, these plans could only be used for fixed locations. But that restriction was removed in 2021, and they are now eligible for mobile use. 

In March 2024, these plans were updated with new names, price increases of $5 a month, dropping included Fast Track data, and additional fine print stating the plans are not intended for entertainment or non-business applications. Other terms remained the same.

The business versions of the consumer DataConnect plans provide buckets of tiered data and automatically assess overages for exceeding the bucket allowance.

Customers who exceed their data allotment will automatically receive 5GB of additional data in increments for $10 per increment.

The Business Data Advantage Plans offer plans with a high-speed data cap, and then unlimited data at 512 Kbps after that. 

The current plan options are:

• 10GB for $50
• 20GB for $90
• 45GB for $150

These plans come with 5G and 5G+ (AT&T's mmWave network) for compatible devices.

Business Connect Plans

AT&T's Business Connect plans come in three flavors: Telemetry, Capped, and Backup .

The "backup" option is the only remotely viable option, but it is intended to use shared buckets of "pooled" with multiple devices. Data costs range from 250MB for $20 to 200GB for $950 (not a typo).

Once data caps are reached, additional data will be automatically added.

These plans can access AT&T's 5G networks with a compatible device.

Business Mobile Select Pooled Plans

The business Mobile Select Pooled plan combines a variety of types of devices into a single pooled plan, but the data caps out at 10GB per device. Overages on one device can be offset by using less data on another device. 5G access is available with compatible devices.

Business Plan Requirements

AT&T Business offerings are generally available to any business customer, but some plans may only be available to certain types of business accounts and may be restricted based on credit history. 

Setting up a business account can be done at an AT&T store or by calling business sales at 855-707-1019. Generally, the best method is to call business sales and talk to a rep directly as store reps are often not knowledgeable about business options. You cannot sign up for a business account on the AT&T website.

Here is the information required to set up a business account:

• A Business tax ID or SSN as a sole proprietor
• A driver's license number
• The plan you want to sign up for
• The IMEI of the device you want the plan for if you are getting a BYOD option
• Contact & billing information

AT&T will run a credit check on the business or your personal SSN. Credit history requirements are not published, but if the credit check doesn't meet AT&T's requirements, AT&T may require a per-line refundable deposit of $1,000 to activate business service.

Once you get a business account, signing up for additional lines/plans is generally done through your business sales representative, but a few plans are available at some AT&T stores.

AT&T Is Raising Rates for Retired Unlimited Plan Customers

Accounts with multiple lines will see a $20/month increase.

AT&T is once again trying to get legacy unlimited plan customers to make the switch to one of its newer “unlimited” data plans.

Starting in August, AT&T customers who are on one of AT&T’s retired unlimited plans will see an increase of $10 on accounts with a single line of service and $20 on accounts with multiple lines.

AT&T notes on its website that the $20 fee is for the entire account, not a $20 increase per line of service.

That additional charge is going to come with a few improvements to the plan. Legacy unlimited plans will be getting added high-speed data and hotspot data on their accounts.

AT&T Unlimited Choice, Choice II, Choice Enhanced, Unlimited &More, and Unlimited Value plans will now include 75GB of high-speed data and 30GB of hotspot data, and AT&T Unlimited Plus, Plus Enhanced, Unlimited &More Premium, and AT&T Unlimited (with TV) plans will now include 100GB of high-speed data and 60GB of hotspot data. Connected Car plans will keep their existing high-speed data benefits and will not get hotspot data.

On its website announcing the change, AT&T also lists its current unlimited plans, in case you want to make the switch.

If the price increase makes you want to ditch AT&T entirely, the company also lists an 800 number you can call to discuss your options.

What is included in Unlimited talk and text?

Unlimited talk and text includes basic direct communications through your phone’s built-in calling and SMS/MMS texting functions. Some messaging services like iMessage or WhatsApp do not use traditional texting and messages are instead sent as data by those apps, which may affect functionality if you have used your monthly data allotment. iMessage will continue to send SMS/MMS messages on our network without data access if you have that functionality enabled on your device.

Cell phone service for less — the cheapest plans we've found at each phone carrier

A government program that subsidized connectivity ended — these plans can keep your mobile costs low

Staying connected takes a big bite out of everyone's budget. But in lower income households, the cost of internet service can feel especially out of reach at a time when connectivity is increasingly important for school, work and the everyday necessities of life.

For a while, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) offered a bit of relief in the U.S. Established in 2021, the ACP provided low-income households with $30 monthly subsidies for internet costs. While that typically meant broadband connectivity, more than a few ACP participants applied the subsidy to defray the costs of wireless phone service.

The Federal Communications Commission, which administered the program, says that 23 million households were enrolled in ACP as of February 2024, representing every county in the U.S. But funding for the program ran out in April, and with the current Congress unlikely to fund an extension, the FCC announced the end of the ACP at the start of June .

So where does that leave the people who have a hard time meeting the high cost of connectivity?

There are still programs out there looking to assist low-income households with broadband and mobile connectivity. For example, the Lifeline federal program subsidizes some of the cost of phone, internet and bundled services for households where the income is 135% or less than the Federal Poverty Guidelines, depending on the size of your household and the state where you live; you may also be eligible for the Lifeline subsidy if you're already enrolled in programs like Medicaid, SNAP and others.

While I can't speak to broadband programs, I have spend the better part of the last decade keeping tabs on the best cell phone plans for Tom's Guide. So I can steer people in the direction of low-cost plans, whether you relied on the ACP for lower-cost cellular service or not.

Tom's Guide lists the best cheap cell phone plans under $40, covering plans of different sizes including those with unlimited data. But even a $40 monthly payment may be out of the reach of some people, who still need to stay connected.

"It's an interesting time in in industry, with lots of change happening," said John Dwyer, the president of Cricket Wireless when I spoke to him recently. "With the ACP subsidy winding down... we want our company to provide solutions."

With that in mind, I decided to put together a list of the lowest-cost options I've spotted during my research into the best phone carriers . This isn't an exhaustive list by any means, as I am sure there are wireless providers out there with packages specifically crafted for low-income customers. Rather, these are the cheapest plans I know about from wireless carriers that I've covered — both major providers as well as mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that use other companies' cellular towers for their own low-cost service.

5GB data plan: $30/month @ AT&T AT&T's cheapest plan comes through its prepaid service, and falls right in the middle of what rivals T-Mobile and Verizon offer in terms of cost. You can use AT&T's 5G service where available, and you can also use your data allotment for hotspot data. AT&T's plan is unique among major carriers in that unused data rolls over to the next month.

5GB data plan: $15/month @ T-Mobile The cheapest plan from the three major carriers can be found at T-Mobile, where you'll pay $15/month for the same 5GB AT&T charges twice as much for. The catch is that once you use up your 5GB, that's it until the next billing cycle begins, or you pay T-Mobile to top off your account. You get 5G coverage with this plan.

15GB data plan: $35/month @ Verizon Verizon's cheapest prepaid option is almost too pricey for me to recommend in this context. It starts at $45/month, though you can save $10 on your monthly bill by enrolling in autopay. What's noteworthy here is the large pool of data, and the fact that if you use up your 15GB allotment, you're not charged extra — Verizon simply slows down your speeds until the end of the billing cycle. As with the other carriers, Verizon's prepaid plan includes 5G coverage, though not its fastest Ultra Wideband 5G service.

5GB data plan: $15/month @ Boost Mobile Boost matches T-Mobile's 5GB plan, right down to both its cost and the hard cap on 5GB of data use. Boost even uses T-Mobile's network for its coverage, though the Boost service also taps into AT&T's network as well as its own Dish network for service.

1GB data plan: $20/month @ Consumer Cellular Consumer Cellular has a reputation for providing wireless service to seniors, though there's no age requirement for its plans. (AARP members do qualify for a monthly discount, though.) The cheapest plan at the service, which uses AT&T and T-Mobile for its coverage, costs $20/month for 1GB; paying an extra $5 each month boosts your data to 5GB.

1GB data plan: $15/month @ Cricket Cricket's cheapest plan gives you 1GB of data for $15/month with nationwide 5G access on AT&T's network. (AT&T owns Cricket.) The only perk with this plan is 2GB of cloud storage. Upgrading to 5GB raises the monthly rate to $30.

5GB data plan: $15/month @ Mint Mint offers some of the lowest rates of any carrier, though with a big caveat — you have to prepay in advance. Your first three months of the company's 5GB plan require a $45 payment, and to keep that low-rate, you then have to pay for a year of service ($180). That big upfront cost puts Mint out of reach for some people, but the T-Mobile-owned service does have very competitive monthly rates if you can take advantage of the discounts.

1GB data plan: $9/month @ Tello Tello offers a multitude of low cost plans — including one with just talk and text but no data for $8/month. However, its cheapest plan with data will give you 1GB for $9. You can also opt for 2GB ($10), 5GB ($14) and 10GB ($19) options that keep your monthly costs under $20. Tello uses T-Mobile's network, and if you hit your data limit, you have to pay for additional data.

Free talk and text plan: $0/month @ TextNow There's no lower price than free, and talk and text won't cost you a thing at TextNow. The company's entry level plan also includes free essential data for mail, directions and ridesharing services. Anything else and you'll have to pay, either by the hour (99 cents), the day ($4.99) or the month ($39.99). The service comes via T-Mobile's network.

3GB data plan: $19/month @ Ultra Mobile Like Mint, Ultra Mobile is now owned by T-Mobile, and its lowest-cost monthly plan gives you 3GB of data for $19. You also have the option of paying for service in 3-month, 6-month and year increments, with the price dropping the longer you pay for. Buying a year of service also gives you access to a $10/month talk and text plan ($120 upfront payment). which includes a bare-bones 250MB data allotment.

2GB data plan: $10/month @ US Mobile US Mobile uses either Verizon's network or T-Mobile's network to provide you with wireless coverage, and the cheapest plan at the carrier costs just $10/month for 2GB of data. (Pay an extra $8 and your allotment increases to 6GB.) The good thing abut that rate is that taxes and fees are included. On the downside, if you hit your data limit, you've got to reload your account.

Cheap unlimited data plans

We've focused on tiered data plans because they tend to be the more affordable option. But as our research into the best unlimited data plans has found, you don't need to pay big bucks to enjoy unlimited data.

One way to keep the cost of unlimited data down is to pay for service up front. Just like Mint Mobile's 5GB plan gives you the best rate when you pay for a year in advance, so does the unlimited data plan at the carrier . A full year of service costs $360, which breaks down to $30 a month. Right now, a promotion at Mint lowers the introductory rate to its data plan to $15/month for the first three months. You can use 40GB of data before your data is slowed.

AT&T has a lower ceiling to its prepaid unlimited plan — just 16GB — but its upfront cost is lower than Mint's too. You'll pay $300 for a year of AT&T's service, which translates to $25/month for unlimited data.

Not everyone can swing that big upfront cost. Here are the two lowest monthly rates we've seen for unlimited data.

Unlimited data: $25/month @ Tello Tello's most expensive plan is still pretty affordable — you get unlimited data for just $25. AT&T is raising prices on old ‘unlimited’ plans

AT&T is pushing prices up for customers who have stayed on old, retired “unlimited” data plans.

In August, customers can expect to see their bills rise by up to $20 for plans with multiple lines. “This is the total monthly increase, not per line increase,” the company says on its website . Customers with just a single line of service will see their charges go up $10 each month.

AT&T says it’s offering customers more high-speed data and hotspot data in return for the price hike. That’s supposed to allow people to keep their old plans that have been grand-fathered in, but with some added perks.

AT&T Unlimited Choice, Choice II, Choice Enhanced, Unlimited &More, and Unlimited Value plans will now include 75GB of high-speed data and 30GB of hotspot data. AT&T Unlimited Plus, Plus Enhanced, Unlimited &More Premium, and AT&T Unlimited (with TV) plans will now include 100GB of high-speed data and 60GB of hotspot data.

Connected Car plans will still have the same high-speed data benefits but won’t get hotspot data, AT&T says.

Some customers might be able to save money by ditching their old plans and switching over to one of AT&T’s newer “unlimited” plans, Ars Technica notes . AT&T’s current “unlimited” plans range from $65.99 to $85.99 per month for a single line plus taxes and fees.
