Exhibition Statement

In the face of crisis, architecture has traditionally sought radical solutions. However, as a state of perpetual crisis becomes the status-quo, architecture must reevaluate its myopic narrative. The collective work of F(r)iction acts as transgressor rather than heroine. In responding to a myriad of environmental, sociological, and material issues, these projects strive to produce architectural fictions that argue for a nuanced form of spatialized agency. Their optimistic mode of working notwithstanding, these works also produce friction in our conventional cultural understandings. The work of F(r)iction proposes that architecture is the mediator situating us among the eddies of calamitous trajectories.

The eight projects exhibited are conducted in the context of the Post-Professional M.Arch program at Princeton University School of Architecture where there is a unique opportunity for professionally trained architects to return to the university to pursue a two-year program culminating in a year-long thesis. The 2023 Post-Professional M.Arch Thesis class is coordinated by Professor Jesse Reiser.

Project Previews

The Public Acclimation Station - Glendale Nancy Ai Advisor: Erin Besler

“Welcome to your Public Acclimation Station! We are a nation-wide network of stations dedicated to supporting your preparations amid the wildfire crisis.”

Working Interiors

Shirley Chen

Advisors: Stan Allen, Cameron Wu

Architecture participates in the construction of technology and its hidden interiors. By inventorying and reassembling the post-vacancy tech office, this thesis imagines the gig workers, who have been excluded from the tech work space, as its new occupants.

A Seam(less) Construct

Advisors: Stan Allen, M. Christine Boyer

Seamless is a fusion of programs, a softening of the edge, an embracement of the advent of the hyper-real, and an exploration of technologically enhanced uncanniness to construct domesticity in a world with increasingly loose boundaries. This thesis proposes to investigate the instrumentality of images, to extend montage techniques from two-dimensional visuality into three-dimensional space-making. It uses meta-montage to understand culture, to storyboard, and to define a new way of living.

Shape within Shape. Rewilding Brooklyn

Advisor: Michael Meredith

If the limitation of building mass through volume and density promised the infinite expansion of urbanism, then the limitation of urban green space must be designed to ensure its pervasive future. This thesis examines the proposition ‘shape within shape,’ a logic that holds true of both the existence of the building and wildlife, where poetic imagination, ‘promise’ can be conceptualized for the diminishing urban ecology.

Three Corners

Danial Mahfoud

Advisors: Paul Lewis, Cameron Wu

Contemporary timber construction prioritizes the economy of mass production and the structural capacity of engineered timber, while maintaining a tenuous correlation to wood's innate expressive and mechanical capacity, as well as its tectonic, spatial, and functional potential. By appropriating traditional interlocking wood joinery techniques in conjunction with the logic of massly produced sheet timber, it is possible to adapt a character of wood that conceives of a spatial and functional organization coincident with an expressive tectonic assembly.

Refuse Grotto

Advisor: Jesse Reiser

The refuse grotto is an act of retroactive monumentality. It is a deviant architecture that requires confrontation with the sheer mass of wastes that are accumulated in landfills and cast to the peripheries of cities.

Climate-Calendar Disconnection; The Perpetual Radiator and the Star

Ali Berk Senbas

Advisors: Elizabeth Diller , Forrest Meggers

Departing from observation regarding seasonal changes, this thesis invents a new paradoxical condition for architecture – sheltering exterior, and searches for a solution to this paradox: the perpetual campfire (cooler).

Guanglei Zhang

Advisor: Jesse Reiser

Warm Cloud imagines a hybrid tactic to Dutch land reclamation through the harmonization of aeroponic farming and data hub’s organizational framework. The proposed aquatic infrastructure endeavors to infiltrate among the more-than-human agents and bond them into an open-ended distributed network, both geopolitically and informationally, serving as an artificial ground that integrates the fluid posthuman bodies into a synergistic whole.

Princeton University School of Architecture is pleased to announce F(r)iction, an exhibition by the 2023 Post-Professional M.Arch Thesis class, opening March 31st at a83 in New York City. The exhibition showcases projects by 8 students—Nancy Ai, Shirley Chen, Xinyu Chen, Andy Kim, Danial Mahfoud, Ana Morris, Ali Berk Senbas, and Guanglei Zhang.

"In the face of crisis, architecture has traditionally sought radical solutions. However, as a state of perpetual crisis becomes the status-quo, architecture must reevaluate its myopic narrative. Chanin School of Architecture, and in keeping with the annual tradition of presenting their work to the public, the School of Architecture is pleased to announce the exhibition A World of Many Worlds . Presented online (see  www.coopergt2020.com ) and as a physical installation, this exhibition synthesizes nine individual thesis projects, referencing the worlds in which they were created and those they aspire to build as a communal endeavor.

As the Foundation Building is currently closed to the public, the students will be exhibiting their work in the building’s exterior windows along Third Avenue, between 7th and 8th Streets. Each student is creating an installation in a single bay of windows. These individual atmospheres will collectively represent diverse project themes and methods of execution, while sharing the school’s work with the public.

Founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper in 1859, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers education in art, architecture and engineering, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences.

“My feelings, my desires, my hopes, embrace humanity throughout the world,” Peter Cooper proclaimed in a speech in 1853. He looked forward to a time when, “knowledge shall cover the earth as waters cover the great deep.”

From its beginnings, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony .

Peter Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills, enrich their intellects and spark their creativity, and develop a sense of social justice that would translate into action .

2020 Thesis Exhibition

THE DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE

Gallery Talk: Tuesday, February 25th, 2020 at 12:00 noon

The Department of Architecture, the Department of Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning, and the Buillding & Construction Technology Program are pleased to present this VIRTUAL EXHIBITION of selected thesis work from the class of 2020.

Clay Beaudoin Title: Urban Inter-Space: Convergence of Human Interaction and Form The Urban Inter-Space shows how the convergence of human interaction and form can activate underused spaces and catalyze future community developments through the integration of dynamic, expandable modules into an urban context. By taking into consideration varying physical characteristics of the different types of program that are explored through an iterative design process, an individual module can be developed to adapt to a variety of functions. This module is capable of being expanded and contracted through human interaction and physical operations, and when populated within an urban condition, it allows the people of those communities to activate leftover spaces and reclaim them as dynamic makerspaces for a variety of creative processes.

Title: Urban Inter-Space: Convergence of Human Interaction and Form

Emily Moreau Title: Rethinking School Design to Promote Safety and Positivity Through the design of a new high school for Chelmsford, MA I explored the question of safety in schools during a time where tragedies occur all too often in schools. By creating a beautiful space that is open to the community in addition to the students, faculty and staff, I aimed to inspire empathy in each user, therefore creating a deeper level of respect for the building and those who occupy it.

Title: Rethinking School Design to Promote Safety and Positivity

Madeline Szczypinski Title: Spatial Design for Behavioral Education The proposed behavioral school for kindergarten through 7th grade in Northampton, Massachusetts utilizes the built environment as a tool to aid human cognition, emotion, and behavior for students who suffer from emotional behavioral disorder. By identifying common challenges, strategic design elements aim to support the building’s program and occupants to achieve specific goals, i.e. academic standards, and behavioral self-management. Implementations range from broad overarching themes including biophilia, behavior-defined space, safety, and transitions down to environmental-behavioral-neurology principles that manifest themselves in the built environment.

THE BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Caitlin Bugash, CHC Honors student || Supervisor Prof. Clouston Title: Sustainability in the Built Environment - Evaluating Spline Connections in Eastern Hemlock Cross Laminated Timber This project investigates structural behavior of cross laminated timber panels made from locally grown eastern hemlock to promote sustainable building design as well as local forest health. Specifically, monotonic and cyclic strength tests were conducted on panel to panel assemblies connected with single surface splines with and without adhesive. Results show that glued specimens performed stronger and stiffer, but with more variability, than the non-glued specimens.

Aaron Speagle, MS in Sustainable Building Systems || Supervisor Prof. Schreyer Title: BIM Capstone Project My project is centered around the 90-year-old fraternity house I manage in State College Pennsylvania. Due to the age of the home and heavy use (usually 25-40 people living there) over the decades, my organization is gearing up to do some fundraising for improvements to the house that will make it more functional for today’s college students. I will be sharing this model, and plan set to help with fundraising for the potential implementation of some of the design options proposed by my project.

Title: BIM Capstone Project

Conrado Araujo, Tyler Cerrone, Natalie Koziol, Daniel Dimitrov, Erik Gianelli, Ben Harrington, Joshual Luttrell, Brennan Hopkins Title: Senior Capstone Project || Supervisor Prof. Romero This project involves a commercial construction bid proposal for a High School in Breese, Illinois. In its entirety, the proposal contained 122 pages of critical information regarding the planning, execution, closeout, monitor and control phases of the assigned project. The students developed a project charter, worked on the project cost and duration estimate, and prepared a project schedule. The team followed processes from the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) to guide the project management aspect of the proposal. These processes were used to develop strategies for risk management, procurement, quality control, stakeholder engagement, project integration and project closeout.

THE DEPARTMENT OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AND REGIONAL PLANNING

Allyson Fairweather Title: Correctional Landscape Studies: Improving the Restorative Potential The purpose of this project is to explore the intersection between landscape architecture, restorative environments, and prison reform by answering the question, “how can the design of outdoor spaces in carceral environments bring the benefits of spending time in nature to inmates and correctional staff?” Although landscape architects cannot fix the issues that have led the US to having the highest incarceration rate in the world, this project demonstrates that we can play a meaningful role in restoring the benefits of nature in correctional landscapes and help improve the lives of offenders and staff, alike.

James Mealey Title: Past and Future at Pleasure Bay: Restoring Coastal Landscape Experience at an Historic Urban Park At the end of the 19th century, Pleasure Bay served as a site of reinvention for the relationship between the people of Boston and their legendary harbor. Today, it should do so again, this time in response to the 21st-century challenges of anticipated sea-level rise, habitat loss, and urban development.

Title: Past and Future at Pleasure Bay: Restoring Coastal Landscape Experience at an Historic Urban Park

Peter Wackernagel Title: The Pocasset Swamp Memorial For my thesis project I studied the theory and design of memorials. I applied this research to a project on the site of the Pocasset Swamp Fight, a battle in the King Philip's War. Influenced primarily by counter-memorials and ideas from indigenous activism, I designed an expanded memorial and ceremonial landscape based on the cosmological forms traditionally used by Algonquian people in cultural features like the Powwow Arena, wigwams, and even the three-sisters garden.

Architecture Thesis: A culmination of all those years of intense training, sleepless nights, countless submissions and unforgettable memories. The grand finale!

It is a real test to showcase all the skills you’ve gained over the years in a single project. Naturally, choosing the right topic from an ocean of architecture thesis topics is one of the biggest challenges you can face as a final year student, as the topic itself may define the trajectory of your thesis!

To ease your conflicted mind, we have curated a comprehensive list of popular architecture thesis projects you might want to explore in your final year, along with links to relevant theses across the internet for your ready reference.

Go on, have a look! What sparks your interest?

Housing/ Residential Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project by an undergraduate student on low-cost housing community development for fishermen in Bangladesh

1. Affordable Housing

“Housing for all” is a major goal developing countries are striving to achieve. Not everyone has the resources to own a house or even rent one out. Conscious and well-planned housing design can turn cities into places where owning a house is not merely a dream. And architects can play a pivotal role in achieving this noble goal.

2. Gated Communities

With the city centres choking with pollution, traffic congestion and over-population, many people are now moving to the suburbs in closed, secure and private gated communities. These colonies circumference almost every major city now, with more emerging as you read. A gated community design could be an interesting (though slightly controversial) architecture thesis topic to explore residential neighbourhood planning.

3. Modular/ Disaster Relief/ Emergency Shelters

Land and resources are limited but the demand for them only keeps increasing giving rise to environmental hazards like deforestation, pollution and depletion of natural assets. In a rapidly changing, calamity-prone world, the design of modular, mobile, disaster relief shelters is the need of the hour!

4. Slum Redevelopment

Urban informality may be a fascinating, complex issue to tackle for your architecture thesis projects. Many people have varied opinions on the dense, informal urban developments popularly known as ‘slums’ , but few are willing to tackle the difficult issue from top to bottom (or bottom up!). Are you one of the few?

Institutional Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project on an art and architecture centre by an undergraduate student

5. Educational and Skill-Training Institutions

Schools play an important role in shaping a person and are key in bringing up generations of bright individuals. Educational and skill-training institutions have vast options, ranging from kindergartens to higher-education institutes; schools of dance to special-needs institutes ! Ready to shape minds?

6. Rehabilitation and Wellness Institutions

A sound mind and sound body are key to a happy life!

Unfortunately, sometimes individuals have to be institutionalised to get their health back on track. Rehabilitation centres and centres for people with depression or trauma aim at people’s mental wellness, while public gyms and civic sports centres aim at people’s physical wellness. If healing architecture and landscape is something you like, this could be the best architecture thesis topic for you!

7. Research Institutions

Progress in science, technology and humanities improves our way of living and ensures our well-being. The Sheldon Coopers among us wouldn’t be happy to see any fewer research centres and laboratories than there are!

Public Infrastructure Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project by an undergraduate student on a cruise terminal

8. Hospitals

Healthcare services are undoubtedly the most important services any region needs. The pandemic has made us understand how under-equipped even the best hospitals can be and so there is an even bigger reason for every hospital, be it multi-speciality/ speciality , maternity, special needs, public or private , to be as well designed as possible. This, more than ever, is the need of the hour and can make for a pressing architecture thesis project.

9. Transit Hubs

Airports , Bus Terminals , Railway Stations , Inland Waterways, Seaports.

Do you love to travel? Have you ever waited for a train and imagined how much better that railway station could be? Then what are you waiting for? Be the change!

10. Sports Stadia

Remember that first stadium experience of watching a cricket or football match? The energy of the crowd, the adrenaline rush! Most group sports stadia ( Cricket , Football , Hockey, Baseball, etc) and sports cities require meticulous study before designing, making a very suitable architecture thesis project for students.

11. Urban/Street Redevelopment

How often do we walk the streets of our cities and almost die because a bike passed within inches of us? Street redevelopment projects catering to pedestrianisation are proven to improve the lives of millions and are rapidly gaining urgency in the urban design domain.

These projects often require extensive site study. Not sure what all to cover in your site analysis? Read - Site Analysis Categories You Need to Cover For Your Architecture Thesis Project .

12. Waterfront Development

Rivers are considered sacred and life-giving across the world. The pitiful conditions of water bodies today have led urban designers to take up River/Canal-front Development Projects which aim at minimising water pollution, a smooth transition from land to water, and ultimately encouraging visitors for leisure and fun activities.

13. Public Parks and Plazas

Parks are the lungs of the concrete jungles many of us live in. After a day of intense work, all we need is some greenery and fresh air; or to grab a beer at that corner cafe in the city square! The design of public parks, plazas and playgrounds could be the best architecture thesis topic for an urban/landscape enthusiast.

14. Social Infrastructure

A robust, well-functioning society accommodates and facilitates the wellness of all its citizens and living beings. Infrastructure like orphanages , nursing homes , animal shelters , night shelters , daycare centres, banks, prisons , juvenile schools, community development centres , and many more tend to those social needs of the society which cannot be overlooked. Inclined towards public welfare? Look no further!

Socio-Cultural Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project of a museum of modern arts

15. Community and Convention Centres

Humans are social animals. Now and then, we crave a meet-and-greet. Community and Convention Centres cater to this very need, and exploring the design angles for human interaction may be something worthy of your architecture thesis project. Be ready for competition though, this is one of the most popular architecture thesis topics students undertake!

16. Museums and Libraries

The culture-lovers among us would understand the value of a good museum or library and appreciate a well-designed one. Be it a museum of arts and crafts, culture, architecture , history or science, if the give and take of knowledge through some entertainment and delight (infotainment) is something you see yourself doing, then this could be the best architecture thesis topic for you.

17. Memorials

Memorials are the physical manifestations of the struggles endured, victories earned and life-changing events in history. They remind us to never forget the past, hoping for a better future at the same time, making memorial design both a fascinating yet weighted exercise.

18. Places of Worship/ Spiritual Centres

One cannot separate a human from their faith. Having a place to worship or connect with one’s spiritual self is as important to a human as going to school or a cinema hall. Places of worship like temples, churches, masjids, gurudwaras, monasteries , etcetera; and spiritual or meditation centres serve as places for gathering and become important landmarks in a settlement.

Conservation and Heritage Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project on the adaptive reuse of a power plant

19. Conservation of Heritage Structures

Conservation of the priceless built heritage like palaces, monuments, places of worship, ancient settlements, etc has always been on the agenda of organisations like UNESCO and the Archeological Survey of India. If historical significance gets your heart rate up, hi history nerd! Help in conserving our heritage structures !

20. Adaptive Reuse of Heritage Buildings

History nerd, if you’re still here, here’s another architecture thesis topic for you. Some heritage can be conserved to attract tourists and some that are too out-of-order could be modified and reused for a different purpose, generating economy. Converting royal palaces into heritage hotels, a king’s court into an emergency ward for covid patients or factories into community spaces, adaptive reuse of the built form requires fine skill, respect for heritage, and an active imagination!

Offices/ Corporate Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project on an office tower by some undergraduate students

21. Government Buildings

Workspaces for all government officials are mandatory for smooth administration. The scale of government buildings is diverse, from the Central Vista Redevelopment Project (*ahem*) to a district-sessions court. Some common categories are high courts, government-owned banks, secretariat and corporation buildings , income-tax offices, assembly and gathering centres , media offices and so on.

Sounds boring? Don’t be so sure. What originally sounds typical is where there is maximum potential to surprise your critics!

22. Corporate Office Towers

We all have seen or at least talked about the famous corporate jungles of our towns. They not only serve as important landmarks but help in increasing the economic value of a region (Very SEZ-y!). If you wanna tame the jungle, you could explore corporate office-building design for your architecture thesis topic.

23. Co-working and Remote-working Spaces

A popular trend before COVID was sharing workspaces, which now have the potential to be thought of as remote-working spaces! Rethinking the design of co-working spaces is very relevant to the times and has great scope for innovation.

With the times we live in, this could be the best architecture thesis topic!

Entertainment and Commercial Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project on an urban entertainment centre

24. Theatres and Auditoria

Who doesn’t like good showtime with family and friends? Theatres, auditoria and performance centres are the core of spaces showcasing and witnessing talent, and fall under another typology which has the potential to be reworked post-pandemic. The design of such entertainment stations can test the knowledge of large-span structures without losing a strong grip on creativity and functionality.

25. Multiplexes and Malls

Malls and multiplexes are very popular among the masses as they possess multiple brands of shopping, entertainment and food centres. Whether or not you agree with the mall typology, more keep coming up in growing towns every year. So why not study how they work and improve the concept for your architecture thesis project? The consumerist urbania will thank you!

26. Marketplaces

Shopping for groceries and essential commodities is a frequent need, and most people head to a single marketplace for all their essential goods shopping. A place with a high frequency of movement requires meticulous and thorough design, but can also be one of the most fun challenges to take up! Think farmer markets, community-owned produce markets, mandis, harbour fish markets, and flea markets, the possibilities are endless!

27. Mixed-Use Hubs

Taking your design challenge up a notch is by taking up a mixed-use hub . This is a high-density area that caters to more than one function and has mega economic value. It could be a combination of residential, commercial, institutional, or hospitality, commercial and public space, or much more. This concept is taken to another level by bringing transit hubs into the fray with transit-oriented development!

28. Film, Photo and Animation Studios

The use of digital media has increased multifold in the past couple of decades. A lot of creatives express themselves through digital content, increasing the need for more film , photo, animation and integrated studios . Since these functions can be highly specialised, there is a lot of potential to do impressive research for your architecture thesis project!

Hospitality and Tourism Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project of an eco-tourist hub of Khonoma village, by Shanjo A. Kithan

29. Eco-Tourism Resorts and Visiting Centres

Imagine spending a weekend at a secluded place, close to nature, with all the facilities you need to relax and just de-stress! Ecological resorts and tourist visiting centres aim to cause as little damage to the environment as possible. Keen on environmental sustainability, eco-tourism resorts should be encouraged in the tourism and hospitality industry and make for very relevant architecture thesis topics.

Landscape architecture enthusiasts, where are you all at?

30. Backpacker Lodging/ Youth Hostels

While the question of travel arises, not everyone can afford finely kempt hotels or resorts to lodge at. The youth may opt for backpacking trips to save money as well as to have an interesting experience! Backpacking/ youth hostels like Zostel and Nomads World are buzzing for their affordability, convenience and prospects of networking with like-minded people. If this is your jam, consider creating innovative spaces for it!

Futuristic/ Sci-fi/ Conceptual Projects

Render of a conceptual architectural design for urban agriculture

How about a settlement on Mars? Or a concert hall in the air? A transit hub of 2050? A forest within the city? Perhaps a residential colony on the water!

Such futuristic or conceptual architecture thesis topics are all the more enthralling as they might not have any precedents. They stretch a creative brain to its limit, and in the process may transform into a brilliant idea. Challenging conventions, thinking out of the box and taking up a futuristic architecture thesis project could be your achievement (both in design and in convincing the faculty) as a young designer!

Having read about some common architecture thesis topics, it is important to know that you must not be limited to the above list. Your architecture thesis is your own brainchild, and it does not need to conform or even fit within a category.

A great architecture thesis is also a key ingredient in creating a kickass architecture portfolio ! So give your all. Who knows, you may even end up receiving an award for your architecture thesis !

Hoping you found the inspiration you were looking for!

thesis exhibition architecture

Today in the Cowgill Lobby, our fifth-year students displayed a glimpse into their year-long projects with an exhibition titled ‘Thesis Intermezzo.’ This exhibition marked a pivotal point in their thesis projects, each student presenting a singular drawing or model, offering a tangible representation of their work. At the end of the day, alumni Laurie Booth and Zach Downey generously shared reflections and advice from their own thesis experiences, inspiring continued hard work during this final semester. Congrats to all for their continued efforts!

Reed Gallery features 2024 Fine Art Senior Thesis Exhibition

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery presents the 2024 Fine Art Senior Thesis Exhibitions by Fine Art majors Amanda Giberson and Lila McCrum from Friday, April 26 to Friday, May 24, 2024. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and meet the artists during the opening reception on Friday, April 26, 6-8 p.m. The exhibition will also be open during the Presque Isle First Friday Art Walk on Friday, May 5, 6 to 8 p.m. The Reed Gallery is located on the second floor of the University’s Center for Innovative Learning.

The Fine Art Senior Thesis Exhibition, a six credit, academic-year-long course, is a capstone to the BFA program. The rigorous course of study is unique to most statewide BFA programs. The Senior Show allows enrolled students to have an experience similar to a graduate school environment. Students are required to prepare a body of work for the solo exhibition and defend it orally and in writing, in order to graduate.

Amanda Giberson’s exhibition, Grounded in Fiber , consists of several pieces that the artist has woven or constructed from primarily naturally sourced materials, many of which she collected from nature. Each of Giberson’s pieces is rooted in an emotional experience, which she then manifests through complex geometry, color harmony and the juxtaposition of a wide variety of natural, textural elements, ranging from soft and alluring to abrasive and mysterious. A self-described “unconventional weaver”, Giberson strives through her work to connect viewers to the inherent beauty of nature and the shared human experience.

Lila McCrum will present The Senior Show , a suite of watercolor paintings that feature residents of the retirement home she works at. Taking inspiration from the tradition of great illustrative artists like Norman Rockwell and Beatrix Potter, along with her own love of narrative, McCrum’s paintings transcend mere portraiture, each one telling a story about the subject. Through her skillful use of the watercolor medium, McCrum conveys the unique stories and personalities of each of her subjects.

During the opening reception on Friday, April 26 and the Presque Isle First Friday Art Walk on Friday, May 5, both artists will be present to discuss their work. The public is invited to attend these free events.

The Reed Art Gallery is located on the upper floor of the Center for Innovative Learning in the heart of the UMPI campus at 181 Main St. in Presque Isle. Regular gallery hours during the academic year are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sundays from 2 to 10 p.m. The Reed Art Gallery is closed on Saturdays and holidays. This stellar DAG exhibition in Delhi uncovers artworks from the forgotten archives of colonial India

DAG

A voyage into the past, into the world of painters and printmakers in colonial India, DAG presents ‘Destination India: Foreign Artists in India 1857-1947’, an exhibition uncovering the archives of artists from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Charles Walters D’Oyly, Untitled, Oil on canvas, 1878, 20.0 x 30.2 in.

The period between the Uprising (1857) and Independence (1947) witnessed the grandeur of the foreign artists travelling to India from different parts of the world, including Germany , Holland, Denmark, USA, France, and Japan. The precedent to the new generation of artists in the twentieth century developed a different sensibility towards the delicate nuances of the Indian subcontinent. Starting through 1880, the period of time transformed through the transmission of picture postcards, a time when photography had become the prominent medium of documentation. The merger of artists discovering novel identities of the elements that have been prevalent in India and the advent of newer technology highlighted the forgotten trove of forms of artistry like painting and printmaking. This show at the Delhi Art Gallery heralds the importance of older forms of artistic production that encouraged these artists into new directions. It brings artworks created during this period back to the shelf, many of them almost a century after they were made.

Works of nearly forty artists, including the Orientalist artists who came in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in their exploration of a living India like Edward Lear, William Simpson, Olinto Ghilardi, Marius Bauer, Erich Kips and Hugo Pederson, and even those who came from even further afield, such as Edwin Lord Weeks from America, and Hiroshi Yoshida from Japan, comes together at this stellar display of works.

Ashish Anand, CEO and MD, DAG, iterates, “When considering British and other European representations of India, the focus is often on the pioneers. The problem with this traditional trajectory is that it overlooks the many interesting artists who visited India—from England and from other European countries—in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These were conventional artists working in oil and watercolour, and various print media, like the earlier pioneers. Some—like Mortimer Menpes and Walter Crane— produced illustrated books , just as James Prinsep and Robert Grindlay had almost a century earlier. They came to India with a different aesthetic sensibility and with different interests. In their works, we find an India—if we can put it this way—that we do not just see, but that we can hear and smell.”

Destination India signifies a shift in perception and engagement with a land that was becoming increasingly intertwined with the Western world. Heralding a hark into this less-explored but equally compelling period, it brings forward the unrecognised and intricate perspectives of the artists exploring the bygone era of the Indian subcontinent.

An accompanying publication, with a foreword by Dr Shashi Tharoor and essays by historians Pheroza Godrej and Giles Tillotson, delves deeper into the representation of India through the eyes of British and other European artists. ‘Destination India: Foreign Artists in India 1857-1947’ is curated by Giles Tillotson, Senior VP, DAG, and opened on 13th July 2024 for a period of six weeks at DAG, New Delhi. Established in 1993 as an art gallery, DAG has grown exponentially to become India’s leading art company with a comprehensive collection dating back to the eighteenth century, with galleries in New Delhi, Mumbai, and New York.
