Hollywood Fringe

By Kyle Bain | August 30, 2020

DANCES WITH FILMS 2020 REVIEW! Samantha (Jennifer Prediger) and Travis Sunstrom ( Justin Kirk ) are aspiring actors who, until the present, have struggled to catch any sort of break. Hollywood Fringe finds this married couple attempting to rekindle a fire within themselves and provide themselves the big break they have hoped for four years. In general, their lives have not met any expectations. They find themselves struggling to remain optimistic or passionate about their careers or themselves. So, the two come up with an idea that may or may not save their careers and their sanity. The two perform a series of skit that depict the struggles of their everyday lives. As the series progresses, their sanity, their hopes, and their dreams are now on the line. Can they finally find success, or will everything the Sunstroms ever hoped to accomplish diminish—never to be revisited?

Hollywood Fringe is dull, slow-moving, and generally boring in terms of what audiences might expect from a film. Little to nothing happens throughout the film, and audiences find themselves questioning each and every second as they attempt to determine what exactly is taking place at any given moment. Most might believe that this “issue” is a deal-breaker and that the film lacks substance or meaning. This, however, could not be further from the truth. Director Megan Huber and writer-director Wyatt McDill construct a film that mirrors the real world. Life can be mundane and it can be unbearable at times. Hollywood Fringe captures this and accurately depicts it on screen. Viewers will identify with the simplicity and the difficulties that Samantha and Travis face .

hollywood fringe movie review

“…attempting to rekindle a fire within themselves and provide themselves [a] big break…”

Leaving so much to the imagination makes it possible that viewers might miss the meaning of the film and fill in the veritable blanks with misinformation, avoiding the reality of what the filmmakers are trying to do. Hollywood Fringe , however, purposely leads down a path of their own making. The film allows these viewers to apply what they see to their own lives and their own personal experiences. There is no right or wrong answer when attempting to decipher what is being done. The open-ended nature of the film welcomes all audiences and allows them to appreciate what is being presented on a personal level.

There are two aspects of the film that play a prominent role, one of which is a surprise. I expected the comedy present in Hollywood Fringe and, while dry, it does deliver on occasion. Mystery, however, takes place and challenges viewers to attempt to understand beyond themselves. While the ability to look at oneself and find meaning within one’s life is prominent throughout Hollywood Fringe , viewers are forced to determine what exactly is taking place throughout the film. There is a divide between what is a reality to the characters and what is simply an act in their traveling, on-site performance. The mystery is determining which is taking place at any given moment. Trying to determine what is real and what is an act reflects the real world and provides even deeper meaning to those watching.

Hollywood Fringe is less about the content (which on the surface can be quite ridiculous) and more about the underlying meaning. These meanings lying beneath the surface present themselves differently to everyone. Huber and McDill create a film with more depth than I’ve seen in a while. The ability to reach a wide range of audiences on a number of levels is impressive and leads audiences to a better appreciation of the cast and crew involved in developing film. Hollywood Fringe is beautifully cryptic and emotionally drawing; it feels original and fresh, leading audiences to brilliant realizations of both the film itself and their own lives.

The 13th Annual Hollywood Fringe Festival Is Now Open

Hollywood Fringe Offers Financially Accessible Theatre in Los Angeles

[ NoHo Arts District , CA] – The 13th annual Hollywood Fringe Festival 2023 is officially open, and will run today through June 25. After one week of previews, the festival kicked off last night at The Bourbon Room with the official Opening Night Party. The rest of the month will include over 1,000 performances and events for patrons to attend across Hollywood as well as digitally via livestream, and will conclude with the Awards Ceremony and Closing Night Party on June 25.

“Hollywood Fringe is back, and there’s so much energy this year,” says Hollywood Fringe Co-Executive Director, Lois Neville. “We’re so excited for our community to experience the amazing work our artists have produced.”

With so many options, it can be challenging to decide what shows to see at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Projects are searchable by category, tags, dates, venues, and more at hollywoodfringe.org/shows . Another great way to find shows on the fly is by checking hollywoodfringe.org/schedule or download the Hollywood Fringe Festival app here and Fringe on the go today (currently available for iPhone, iPod touch, and Mac).

Ticket prices for Hollywood Fringe productions range across the board, and festival organizers encourage participants to set their own ticket prices as part of the organization’s mission to empower artists to be their own producers. This year, the average ticket price for a Hollywood Fringe performance is $10, and 18 productions have chosen the “pay what you can” model, while 8 productions are choosing to present their work to audiences for free.

“We are so proud to provide a platform that makes the performing arts more financially accessible not only to the artists who produce work at Hollywood Fringe, but also to audiences that cannot typically afford to experience live theatre,” says Hollywood Fringe Co-Executive Director, Ellen Boudreau Den Herder.

Festival organizers encourage patrons and community members to see shows all month long, and spend time at Fringe Central , the community center of the festival – located outdoors just two blocks south of Theatre Row at 905 Cole Ave. At Fringe Central, community members can find Bryan’s Bar, Fringe Concierge, festival staff, festival guides, merchandise, impromptu events, and more. Fringe Central is also the place to pick up a Fringe Button, the official community badge that identifies members of the Fringe family, which also provide perks such as $1 off ticket purchases sold through the Hollywood Fringe website and discounts to local businesses through the Hot Spot program . More on buttons and their specific perks can be found here.

“Whether you’re interested in experiencing art, building community, or supporting local businesses, there’s something for everyone this year at Fringe,” says Neville. “Come and experience it for yourself – you certainly won’t regret it.”

Tickets for all productions in the 2023 Hollywood Fringe Festival are now on sale at www.hollywoodfringe.org , and will also be sold on the Hollywood Fringe mobile app and at Fringe Central during operating hours.

Key Dates for 2023 Hollywood Fringe Festival:

June 1-6: Preview week

June 7: Opening Night Party

June 8-25: 13th Annual Hollywood Fringe Festival

June 25: Awards/Closing Night Party

About The Hollywood Fringe Festival

The Hollywood Fringe Festival is an annual, open-access, community-derived event celebrating freedom of expression and collaboration in the performing arts community. Participation in the Hollywood Fringe is completely open and uncensored. This free-for-all approach underlines the festival’s mission to be a platform for artists without the barrier of a curating body. By opening the gates to anyone with a vision, the festival can exhibit the most diverse and cutting-edge points-of-view the world has to offer. Additionally, by creating an environment where artists must self-produce their work, the Fringe motivates its participants to cultivate a spirit of entrepreneurialism in the arts.

The Collective

Hollywood Fringe Review: The Collective

After three science fiction themed productions ( Signals , Abandoned , and The Showroom ), Last Call Theatre switches gears with The Collective , which invites audiences to a 1920s wake where rival factions will vie to assume the throne of a murdered mafia don. The story is rather outside of Hollywood Gothique’s usual purview; however, we have reviewed other murder mysteries with no fantasy elements , and fans of the Last Call’s previous trilogy should enjoy another iteration of their clever template, which puts audiences in the middle of the action.

Setup has the murdered don’s mother, Valentina  (Ashley Busenlener), read his will the the assembled mourners, but she stops before revealing his selected successor. The assembled members of The Collective then set about proving each other: jockeying to ascend to the throne and trying to determine whether the don was truly murdered by a rival gang or rather taken out by a disloyal member of The Collective.

As in Last Call Theatre’s previous interactive productions, ticket holders answer an online questionnaire, the result of which aligns everyone with a certain character in the story. This alliance anchors the audience as they navigate backstabbing characters who may or may not be telling the truth; sticking with a single character focuses the experience, turning participants into role-players with an agenda of their own (helping their ally).

The Collective

The result is entertaining, with plenty of opportunities for improvised interaction. Unlike some interactive theatre, there is seldom a sense that time is wasted on fruitless pursuits; questions may not yield the expected answers, but the answers will lead to some new line of inquiry, and there is almost always a sense that progress is being made.

As usual, the cast is great, and at times the bond between audience members and their assigned characters achieves something almost like a parasocial relationship . With a blackjack table and a dance interlude, there is more to the evening’s entertainment than interrogation; The Collective is rather like attending a celebratory wake. It does not contain our preferred spirits, but the ingredients still form a satisfying cocktail.

‘Lonely Planet’: Release Date, Plot & More About the Liam Hemsworth & Laura Dern Movie

Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern go on a life-altering trip together in 'Lonely Planet.' Hollywood Life has the latest updates about the upcoming romance film, here.

Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth   jet off to Morocco in their new movie, Lonely Planet . Playing on-screen love interests, the co-stars discussed their film, its plot, their working relationship and more about the upcoming romance story.

Hollywood Life has all the latest updates on Lonely Planet , below!

What Is ‘Lonely Planet’ About?

The film follows Laura’s character, Katherine, “a reclusive [who] novelist arrives at a writer’s retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer’s block,” per Netflix ‘s description. “While there, she meets a young man — what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.”

The Marriage Story actress described her character in further detail, noting that Katherine “has spent her life dedicated to narrative and therefore [hasn’t spent] much time looking at deep truth within.”

“She is at a turning point in her life where she is looking for a softening and deeper understanding, and she finds it in a love story,” Laura added, before explaining what attracted her to the movie. “What drew me to the story was the exploration of identity and self-worth within relationships, especially in a world as intellectually charged as the literary scene. The dynamic between the younger man and the older, established writer intrigued me because it’s not just about romance — it’s about finding someone who truly sees and understands you, which is something deeply human and relatable.”

Laura Dern as Katherine Loewe and Liam Hemsworth as Owen Brophy in Lonely Planet.

Elsewhere in their interview, Liam and Laura delved into their on-set working relationship. The Hunger Games franchise star noted that it was an “absolute privilege” to share the screen with the Oscar winner, calling her a “remarkable talent.”

As for Laura’s take on Liam, she described him as “pure magic” and said, “He became not only a buddy and a confidant through our Moroccan adventure, but our shared longing [for] honesty and intimacy in all relationships was very moving to me. We were very aligned, so getting to tell this story together meant the world … and he is friggin’ hilarious, so I laughed the entire time.”

‘Lonely Planet’ Movie Release Date

Viewers can watch Laura and Liam’s romance story unfold on October 11.

Where to Watch ‘Lonely Planet’

Since Netflix is distributing the film, fans can watch it on the streaming platform upon its release.

For a profession that works to make its own labor invisible, stunt performers have taken the spotlight in 2024. First came Ryan Gosling’s “The Fall Guy,” a popcorn movie built around a body double; now comes Season 4 of “ Only Murders in the Building ,” where the latest mystery’s victim is Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), the longtime stand-in for ex-procedural star Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin). Sazz’s disappearance after being shot in the Season 3 finale sets up a season that’s just as daffy as its predecessors, but more thematically focused on the idea of doppelgangers and what they tell us about ourselves.

Popular on variety.

These so-called “Westies” are enjoyable additions, but it’s the movie that gives Season 4 more focus and pathos than the show has had since Season 1. It’s not just the inside baseball jokes — including a shoutout to this very publication! — or the opportunity to cast Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria as themselves, glomming onto the open case as a means of studying their soon-to-be characters. Charles grows increasingly convinced that Sazz caught a bullet that was meant for him, in one final act of absorbing blows on his behalf. That leads not just to delightful forays into the stunt community, but sincere introspection about what it means for someone else to capture your essence.

“Is that really me?” Charles asks in his opening voiceover, describing the experience of watching oneself (or a version of it) onscreen. “Is that how I want to be remembered?” Oliver frets that Galifianakis sees him as boring and pathetic, an extension of insecurities around his girlfriend Loretta’s newfound stardom; Mabel is disturbed to hear herself dismissed as a jobless, homeless, adrift young woman. Compared to previous seasons, this one rarely focuses on the podcast-in-progress, instead shifting narrators with each episode. But Charles’ sets the tone for a story that strikes the right balance between melancholy loneliness and naming an adorable piglet George Swinebrenner. Everything in moderation, especially when it comes to making comedy from corpses.

The first episode of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 is now streaming on Hulu, with new episodes airing weekly on Tuesdays.

Updated: An earlier version of this review misstated the name of Molly Shannon’s character.

Laurence Fishburne had politics on the mind when he learned of the furor surrounding the latest trailer for director Francis Ford Coppola ‘s star-studded feature Megalopolis .

Box office: 'deadpool & wolverine' back on top as 'blink twice' underwhelms and 'the crow' collapses, tv ratings: democratic convention closes with 26m viewers, edging rnc final night.

Fishburne, who narrates the Megalopolis trailer, explains that he was overseas when the drama unfolded. As it happens, he was actually in the middle of viewing footage from the Democratic National Convention when he was informed of the situation.

“I’m here in London, and somebody told me about it, but I was busy watching the DNC ,” the star tells THR with a laugh. “I was like, ‘I need to focus on this. I can’t be bothered with whatever that is.’ So I’m not aware of what it is, exactly.”

Fishburne agrees with anyone who had trouble understanding what exactly happened with the controversial trailer: “Yeah, it’s weird.”

Among the fabricated excerpts in the trailer that do not appear in the published reviews include Andrew Sarris’  The Village Voice  piece being quoted as calling  The Godfather  a “sloppy self-indulgent movie,” and Pauline Kael’s  New Yorker  review supposedly stating that the film was “diminished by its artsiness.” Lionsgate has since reportedly parted ways with marketing consultant Eddie Egan, who worked on the trailer.

As for Megalopolis itself, Fishburne says he was pleased to collaborate again with the Oscar-winning Coppola after appearing in the director’s 1979 classic Apocalypse Now . Megalopolis hits theaters Sept. 27 and stars Driver as an architect with lofty goals of rebuilding New York City from the brink of ruin.

“I am just so grateful that I was able to help Francis and be there for him and work with him, Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, Jon Voight, Dustin Hoffman, Shia LaBeouf — all of these amazing, amazing actors,” Fishburne says of his fellow co-stars. “I loved the movie.”

He continues, “Francis has poured his heart out, and he’s given us another masterpiece yet again. I’m just really proud to be a part of it.”

In Season 4, ‘Only Murders in the Building’ morphs into a marvelously funny Hollywood farce

Who would have imagined that we’d be seeing a fourth season of “Only Murders in the Building,” premiering Tuesday on Hulu? The people who made it, possibly, as they’ve ended each season with a new mystery to be solved in the next. But the very idea of Steve Martin and Martin Short embarking on a television series in their 70s, with Selena Gomez, then not yet 30, as their co-star, seemed as wonderful as it was unlikely — and wonderful is what it turned out to be. Each succeeding season has felt like a little, not-quite-expected gift.

The fading energy of elder statesmen has become something of a hot topic this year, but “Murders” continues to argue for a productive long life. Short, 74 this year, is still in touch with his inner Ed Grimley, and Martin, now 79, is still funny in a specifically Steve Martin way — there were times watching the new season when I expected him to finish a sentence with “and I am a wild and crazy guy” — including some subtle physical humor. Gomez, solemn and low-key — whom one could not have foreseen becoming the fulcrum in a May-December comedy trio — provides the perfect balance.

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING - “Once Upon a Time in the West” - Charles, Oliver & Mabel are whisked to Los Angeles where a legendary film studio intends to adapt their podcast. However, Hollywood’s glitz is overshadowed by a stunning clue about Charles’ stunt double & friend Sazz Pataki. (Disney/Eric McCandless) STEVE MARTIN, SELENA GOMEZ, MARTIN SHORT

‘Only Murders in the Building’ goes Hollywood: ‘This is a dreamy way to start the season’

In the Season 4 opener of Hulu’s comedy, Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) are in L.A. to discuss an adaptation of their podcast. We followed along.

Aug. 26, 2024

Let us briefly reintroduce our heroes, whom we met as lonely people finding one another around a shared love of true-crime podcasts and the fact that they all live in the Arconia, the grand old upper Manhattan building of the title. They are Charles-Haden Savage (Martin), a largely unemployed actor who starred in a successful late-’80s cop show, “Brazzos,” about which he is happy to remind anyone who stands still long enough to be reminded; Oliver Putnam (Short), a producer of serial stage flops, whose seeming success with the musical “Death Razzle Dazzle” quickly turns sour at the start of this season; and Mabel Mora (Gomez), a smart and artistic but directionless young woman. (She is currently homeless and crashing at Oliver’s; scenes where the trio are all in their bathrobes, discussing the new mystery, are kind of lovely.)

Their relationship, which has had its ups and downs over the previous three seasons, has evolved now to a point of stability, both as friends and collaborators, clearing the deck for action. It’s a new-broom-sweeping-clean sort of season; apart from the welcome return of neighbor Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton), Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s Det. Williams and Meryl Streep as Oliver’s actor-girlfriend Loretta Durkin, there are few faces around from previous years. Personal relationships do not get in the way of the sleuthing.

At the end of Season 3, Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), Charles’ former stunt double and longtime friend, was shot through the window of his apartment on the night of the triumphant premiere of Oliver’s play. “Is she dead?” is a question the writers would like you to ask. And also, “Was she the target?,” identically dressed as she was to Charles. These are only the first of many questions this zigzag season will take its time answering.

This season presents a comedy of doubles, stunt and otherwise. Hollywood comes calling to make a movie based on our heroes’ podcast, under the half-mad aegis of executive Bev Melon (a deliciously unhinged Molly Shannon ). Even before our trio signs anything, there are a script, a cast and arty twin-sister directors, “hot off their Grand Prix at Cannes and their super-duper viral Walmart ad campaign,” already in place. Where Season 3 played with tropes of the theater, the current series satirizes, or self-satirizes, movies and movie actors. The conceit of characters dealing with people who have been assigned to play them is not new, but it is particularly delightful here, with Zach Galifianakis radiating bored contempt for Oliver, Eva Longoria almost begging Mabel to consider her a peer, and Eugene Levy an excited fan of Charles’ work on “Brazzos.”

Only Murders in the Building -- "Sitzprobe" - Episode 308 -- On the day of the show's most critical rehearsal, the pressure mounts. A familiar official returns to upend the case, Loretta's complex past threatens to upend all else and Charles must finally sing his number without losing his marbles. Meryl Streep sings out a confession

The actor’s selfless confession in ‘Only Murders in the Building’ launches a cliffhanger

July 30, 2024

The sense of melancholy that bitter-sweetened earlier seasons, with storylines surrounding first victim Ted Kono, grave-robbing deli mogul Teddy Dimas and his deaf son Theo, and Charles’ virtual daughter Lucy, is absent this year in favor of satire and farce and a collection of characters even odder than usual. These include Richard Kind as an Arconia resident with a supposedly ineradicable migrating case of pink eye and Kumail Nanjiani as his neighbor, whose apartment is crowded with Christmas decorations year round. They belong to the building’s less exclusive West Tower, across the courtyard — a different world, where Charles’ Season 1 serial-killer girlfriend Jan (Amy Ryan) lived — upon which Charles, Mabel and Oliver spy like James Stewart in “Rear Window.”

Melissa McCarthy, whose character is apparently a spoiler, will have a lot to do when she arrives, and, as might be said of the season as a whole, she is marvelously funny.

There is a brief trip to Los Angeles, for stock shots, scenes on the Paramount lot and a Hollywood party; a New York bar for stunt performers called the Concussion; and another, longer trip to suburban Long Island. Only seven of 10 episodes having been offered for review; I cannot say whether other locations, or other characters, will come into it. Or what Portugal has to do with any of it.

I can say that I’m sad not to have been sent those final three episodes. We will wait together.

A Play About J.K. Rowling Stirred Outrage. Until It Opened.

The muted reaction to the Edinburgh Fringe show “TERF” suggests that when activists engage with potentially inflammatory art, offense can quickly vanish.

Two women sit facing each other on a darkened stage; behind them, three actors wearing white masks stand in a row.

By Alex Marshall

Reporting from Edinburgh

There are more than 3,600 shows in this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe and most will struggle to get even a single newspaper review. Yet for months before the festival opened on Friday, one play was the subject of intense global media attention: “TERF,” an 80-minute drama about J.K. Rowling, the “Harry Potter” author, and her views on transgender women.

Before anybody had even read the script, a Scottish newspaper called the play, which imagines Rowling debating her views with the stars of the “Harry Potter” movies, a “foul-mouthed” attack on the author . An article in The Daily Telegraph said that “scores of actresses” had turned down the opportunity to play Rowling. And The Daily Mail, a tabloid, reported that the production had encountered trouble securing a venue .

On social media and women’s web forums, too, “TERF” stirred outraged discussion.

The uproar raised the specter of pro-Rowling protesters outside the show and prompted debate in Edinburgh, the city that Rowling has called home for more than 30 years. But when “TERF” opened last week, it barely provoked a whimper. The only disturbance to a performance on Monday in the ballroom of Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms came from a group of latecomers using a cellphone flashlight to find their seats. About 55 theatergoers watched the play in silence from the front few rows of the 350-seat capacity venue.

Given the regular disagreements between some feminists and transgender rights supporters, the uproar around “TERF” was not unexpected.

But the muted response to the show itself suggests that fewer British people are riled by the debate than the media coverage implies — or at least that when activists engage with potentially inflammatory art, outrage can quickly vanish.

hollywood fringe movie review

Review by BARRY BRISCO

What i liked, what i didn't like.

I wouldn’t touch a thing.

My overall impression

“ PURE CENEMA ”… What a way to jump off the 2024 Hollywood Fringe. This is my first show of the season and it reminds me of what it is to see outstanding fringe performances with amazing writing, fantastic direction, a spot on ridiculously talented cast, and all done within the chaos and simplicity of the fringe festival. Immediately when the lights came up I absolutely knew who the characters were. Bill Chott, “Alfred Hitchcock” nailed the cinematic icon, down to his pouty bottom lip, his voice, his demeanor, his walk and movements all wonderful acting.  Aaron Caponigro, depiction of “Mel Brooks” was absolutely delightful, what a fun guy to watch on stage. He gave us so much of the comedy legends’ love for art and direction and movie making and love for his legendary wife Anne Bancroft.  The moment you hear the bells, (You’ll know what I’m talking about when you see the show, you are going to see this show, right?) He immediately captured Mel Brooks’s spirit and continued throughout the play. Told in three Acts this play takes us on a journey inside a few weekly meetings between Alfred Hitchcock, his assistant “Maja Jablonski” another amazing performance by a wonderful actress, Lindsay Seim, and Mel Brooks.  There’s a line in the play “It’s like bumping into history” This play is absolutely like bumping into history. The writing by David Nepris is so smart, fun, and thoughtful, The play is very well written and very well executed, and I look forward to seeing more from this talented writer. The Production team was also spot on, The Direction was so good that I found myself looking for flaws, Nope, I’m not saying it was flawless but Damn good Direction, Matt Ritchey. The props and set decoration worked extremely well, especially for Fringe. The costumes are great. Bravo team. Bravo. You don’t have to be a fan of the “New Hollywood Movement” of the 1960s-1970s Cinema to enjoy this piece as much as I did. But if you are, definitely see this play. All you “Film Buffs” that hate Plays, definitely see this play, this one is for you.. Many of us idolize and grew up with these real people and although we see them as characters, Alfred Hitchcock, Mel Brooks, his beautiful wife Anne Bancroft, and " The Birds" Tippi Hedren, and Maja Jablonski are all real people and we get to spend a few days with them, How cool is that? We get to have lunch with Hitchcock and Brooks, How cool is that? This play takes us on a journey into their lives and shares with us what it was like to sit in on a meeting with Alfred Hitchcock at the end of his career and Mel Brooks at the start of his legacy. There isn’t a film fan alive who wouldn’t want to be a fly on the wall in that meeting. I’m glad I had the opportunity to be that fly. Bravo cast, very well done.  BARRY BRISCO “ ASYLUM JUDGE ”
