Saripodhaa Sanivaaram Review: Nani-SJ Suryah elevate Vivek Athreya's clever writing

Saripodhaa sanivaaram movie review: director vivek athreya's film starring nani, sj suryah and priyanka mohan, is a tastefully done commercial cinema. clever writing and brilliant performances are its strongest points..

Listen to Story

Poster of 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram'.

  • 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' graced the screens on August 29
  • Directed by Vivek Athreya, the film features Nani, SJ Suryah and Priyanka Mohan
  • The film is a top-tier commercial drama with clever writing

Release Date: 29 Aug, 2024

Watching a neatly woven commercial cinema is therapeutic in every sense. And when it is headlined by powerhouse performers, Nani and SJ Suryah, you know you're in for a treat. 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' marks Nani and director Vivek Athreya's second collaboration after 'Ante Sundaraniki'. While 'Ante Sundariniki' was a cute rom-com, Nani and Vivek went all out for 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' by picking a masala entertainer with a family backdrop.

Surya (Nani) is a loved elder child to his parents (Abhirami and Sai Kumar). But, his anger is his problem. His mother, who is counting her days, teaches him a unique way to keep his anger in check and let it out only on Saturdays. Surya makes note of people who wronged him on the rest of the days and gets time to process his anger till Saturday. And when he feels his anger is justified, he thrashes the people who angered him.

It is policewoman Charulatha (Priyanka Mohan) who brings Surya and Circle Inspector Dayanand (SJ Suryah) together. Surya and Daya suffer from the same issues. While Surya doesn't show his anger, Daya is a ruthless monster who displays his anger right then and there for all the wrong reasons. An untoward incident in Sokulapalem (where Daya picks random people and beats them to a pulp) pits Surya against Daya.

Director Vivek Athreya's idea of commercial cinema is exciting. He never goes for low-hanging fruits. Instead, he spends time in world-building, neat setups and elaborate character arcs. 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' is not your regular mass masala entertainer which is replete with a bunch of elevation scenes, fights, songs and drama. In this film, every single action of Surya and Daya has a solid reason.

The film doesn't go overboard with over-the-top emotions. It shows restraint and concentrates on its core idea of how anger affects and impacts one's life. You can see the clever writing in every corner of 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram'. Despite having a family backdrop, the film doesn't get melodramatic. This is where Vivek Athreya's clever writing comes to the fore.

Not just the lead characters, even Priyanka, Sai Kumar and Abhirami's characters make beautiful impact regardless of their respective screen times. Be it Nani and Sai Kumar's banter or 'Eega' callback sequences, 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' strikes the right balance between catering to the writing and the fans.

The director introduces the concept of Narakasuran and Yama-Chitragupta and incorporates them in with his clever writing. This is where 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' stands tall when compared to commercial films of the same ilk.

While 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' gets most things right, it also has a few shortcomings. Daya's behaviour glorifies police brutality and he doesn't get reprimanded by anyone above him in the system, except for the hero. There are some convenient coincidences too. But they do not affect the screenplay so much. Despite having a runtime of 2 hours and 46 minutes, 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' has a lot to like and devour.

Nani's restrained performance as Surya is just impeccable. When he showcases his rage, you buy into it as he has his reasons. His equation with his father, elder sister and his potential girlfriend gives us a peek into his psyche. Similarly, SJ Suryah's Daya is an impulsive and violent inspector, who has a fragile ego. The film takes its sweet time to establish their characters, and it pays off when they face each other.

Priyanka Mohan has a solid role to play as well. She is the bridge that connects Surya and Daya and does a neat job. Aditi Balan, who plays Nani's elder sister, has a brief role, yet makes an impact. Sai Kumar plays the ideal father who makes you fall in love with him.

Composer Jakes Bejoy's pulsating background music enhances the theatrical moments. However, his songs are quite forgettable. Cinematographer Murali G and editor Karthika Srinivas's work help 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' in achieving the desired result.

With 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram', Nani and director Vivek Athreya have a winner in their hands. They promised. They delivered and how!

3 out of 5 stars for 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram'. Published By: K Janani Published On: Aug 29, 2024 ALSO READ | 'Saripodhaa Sanivaaram' trailer: Nani's new film is high on twists and thrill

‘Alien: Romulus’ Solidifies Disney’s Box Office Rebound

After struggling in recent years, Hollywood’s biggest movie company has now delivered four hits in a row, dominating the summer with a 42 percent market share.

Cailee Spaeny, wearing a dark space helmet and spacesuit, looks into the distance, as lights inside the helmet highlight her face.

By Brooks Barnes

Reporting from Los Angeles

“Alien: Romulus” was on pace to collect at least $42 million at theaters in the United States and Canada over the weekend, a strong total that solidified a turnaround at Disney’s movie division.

Disney’s seven movie factories — Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, 20th Century, Searchlight Pictures, Disney Animation and Walt Disney Pictures — began to break down in 2021. They had been pushed too hard to make content for Disney’s streaming service. The pandemic added difficulties, resulting in a string of failures like “Jungle Cruise,” “Strange World,” “Lightyear,” “Haunted Mansion,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The Marvels” and “Wish.”

Investors grew increasingly agitated , putting Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, and Alan Bergman, Disney’s top movie executive, under extreme pressure to deliver improved results. Movies carry unusual weight at the Walt Disney Company, which relies on them for much more than ticket revenue. At Disney, movies also power a vast consumer products division and underpin theme park attractions.

It certainly appears that Disney has regained its box office footing. So far this summer (from May 1 to Sunday), Disney films have accounted for 42 percent of total ticket sales in the United States and Canada, according to Box Office Mojo, a film database. Last summer, Disney had about a 27 percent market share.

With the successful release of “Alien: Romulus” (20th Century), the company has now delivered four consecutive hits. In May, Disney rolled out “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” a 20th Century movie that cost about $160 million to make and collected nearly $400 million worldwide. “Inside Out 2” (Pixar) arrived in June and has taken in $1.6 billion worldwide. In July, “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Marvel) set a record for the largest R-rated opening in Hollywood history, and has gone on to sell $1.1 billion in tickets.

20 Greatest Hindi Romantic Films of All Time

of 20 Greatest Hindi Romantic Films of All Time

Over its existence, art has been an expression of and taken inspiration from a whole lot of things, but no other thing has inspired art as much as love. Cinema is no exception. From Scarlet O’Hara to Simba, son of Mufasa, many an iconic character has been enamored by love. Now, Bollywood might not match its peers in many respects and genres, but romantic films are something we can be proud of defining as much as any industry out there. Raj Kapoor’s vagrant ways. Dilip Kumar and SRK’s emotional delivery. Aishwarya Rai’s expressive eyes. Kareena’s childlike charm – all these and many more have made audiences go weak in the knees. Bollywood’s style of musical romance has an aura of its own. Here is the greatest romantic movies produced by Bollywood.

Honorable Mentions

Chori Chori (1954), Daag: A Poem Of Love (1973), Kabhie Kabhie (1976), Silsila (1981), Maine Pyaar Kiya (1989), Chandni (1989), Devdas (2002), Veer-Zara (2004), The Lunchbox (2013). Lootera (2013).

20. Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein (2001)

romantic movie review times of india

Ask anyone who was a teen during the early 2000s to name their favourite romantic film and RHTDM is almost guaranteed a spot. It didn’t rake in the moolah when released, but the film has since garnered a cult following. While love triangles are found aplenty within Bollywood films, RHTDM rises a cut above the rest due to a clear chemistry between its lead pair as well as that between R. Madhavan and Saif Ali Khan. Add some quote-worthy dialogue and a memorable soundtrack and we have a romance with massive rewatch value. While I can’t deny the moral question mark the film raises by sort of condoning stalker-ish behaviour, full props to the film for making an obsessive lover as real as R. Madhavan’s Maddy, as there’s no dearth of those in our great country.

19. Barfi (2012)

romantic movie review times of india

Meet Barfi – he can’t speak or hear, but his expressive, wide-eyed countenance is all he needs to convey his emotions. Meet Shruti – a dainty dame who Barfi is smitten with, Meet Jhilmil – an autistic heiress with no one who truly cares for her. The lives of our three endearing protagonists criss-cross and coast, first in scenic Darjeeling and then in vintage Kolkata, both of which are stunningly captured by director Anurag Basu. Equally stunning are the performances by Ranbir Kapoor as Barfi and Priyanka Chopra as Jhilmil. With Saurabh Shukla’s hilarity interluding with the love story and Pritam’s Bossa Nova-inspired music in tow, Barfi is simply therapeutic. A whiff of pure romance as fresh as the Darjeeling air.

18. Rockstar (2011)

romantic movie review times of india

From one definitive Ranbir Kapoor to the next, which is the polar opposite of our previous entry, showing just how much a range Ranbir has. ‘Rockstar’ is an ode to the overpowering pangs of love and passion which can exude art, as well as wreck a person. Imtiaz Ali’s rendering of the story of Janardan Jakad, a loafer in search of the dard (pain) which he believes would make him a true artist, and Heer, the embodiment of Janardan’s undoing, is beautifully haunting and surreal. Ranbir gets into the skin of a troubled, lovelorn rockstar in a career-defining role as he hums, sings and shouts aplenty. A lion’s share for the andaaz (demeanour) of ‘Rockstar’ goes to Orshad Kamil’s poignant lyrics and A.R. Rahman’s legendary soundtrack. One of the most soulful modern romances and a future classic in the making.

17. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994)

romantic movie review times of india

After the incessant barrage of action flicks in the preceding two decades, may it be due to Mr. Bachchan’s ‘Angry Young Man’ persona, or those nutsy 80s films Mithun Da starred in, Bollywood saw a rejuvenation of the classic romances in the 90s. And SRK was at the heart of it. And while a certain film higher up on our list is credited with being the peak of that revolution, ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’, released a year before that film, is no less of a film either. Sunil (played by SRK at his charming best) is a puppy-eyed loser who is smitten with Anna, but Anna likes Sunil’s mate Chris. And unlike SRK from ‘Darr’, the SRK in KHKN loses the girl to another guy, which makes his character all the more lovably real. Relatable, endearing and with a strong humour quotient present as well, KHKN is one of the most underrated gems in SRK’s filmography.

16. Jab We Met (2007)

romantic movie review times of india

Imtiaz Ali is one of those directors whose films (most of them at least!) mean more to you each successive time you watch them. At first glance, ‘Jab We Met’ is a fun-filled ride across northwest India, with two strangers who are almost polar opposites. As we delve in, Aditya and Geet’s outlooks at love and life unfold, as do their feelings for each other. It is a perfectly and gradually unfolding romance. Shahid Kapoor and Kareena, who were a real-life pair once, shine individually and collectively, as they exude chemistry while playing off each other’s energies. Pritam’s winning music and dollops of humour (most emerging from Kareena’s Geet) are a big bonus. JWM is light and deep, all at once.

15. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988)

romantic movie review times of india

The age-old trope of star-crossed lovers has been used an infinite number of times in cinema, but only a few of these Romeo-and-Juliet-esque films manage to stay in memory ages after one has left the theater. ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ is one such tale of lovers against the world. In an era where action was the norm, QSQT’s refreshing youthful romance set the tone for musical romances in the following decade. Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, both of whom were fledgling starlets then, bring forth a natural chemistry as they play the lovelorn children of bitter rivals. Anand-Milind’s soundtrack, massively popular and recreated to date, elevates the duo’s enamored expressions. A quintessential yet memorable tale of love till doom.

14. Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994)

romantic movie review times of india

Salman Khan rose to stardom after starring as the winsome Prem in Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’. And 5 years later, Barjatya upped the ante with this musical romance for the ages, which would have an impact on many wedding celebrations to come. HAHK still remains one of the most adored wholesome family films out there. Heck, to this day my sisters don’t even let me change channels when the film is on TV! The film bridges traditionalism with modernity, through a display of family values, as well as acceptance of non-arranged romance, which is still a big no-no in our country. Yes, maybe some of the ideals in the film have become dated. But the inextricable chemistry between a babyfaced Bhai and the ever-graceful Madhuri hasn’t aged a second, nor has the legendary 14-song soundtrack, 11 of which had the indomitable Lata Mangeshkar in them. A triumph for the style of Bollywood.

13. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)

romantic movie review times of india

The mark of a great auteur is distinction, and any Sanjay Leela Bhansali film can be identified by his trademark stamp of visual vibrancy and evocative romance. And it was in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ that his style came of age. Set in the heart of a colour-soaked Gujarat, the film tells the story of Nandini (Aishwarya Rai), a musician’s daughter who has to give up her room to his protege Sameer (Salman Khan), but amidst weddings, festivals, get-togethers, our couple falls for one another. But she has to get married instead to Vanraj (Ajay Devgn), a match chosen by her father who loves her devoutly. This three-hour extravaganza has it all – innumerable iconic coy moments between Salman-AIshwarya, a soundtrack, some parts of which will make you sing along for days, other parts will break your heart and the beautiful set pieces which have now become classic Bhansali tropes. HDDCS is certainly the most romantic of Bhansali’s lovestruck filmography.

12. Madhumati

romantic movie review times of india

What do ‘Karz’, ‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Karan Arjun’ have in common? Reincarnation. And this is he romantic film that catapulted purnajanam is a pivotal theme in cinema to the mainstream. The film chronicles the undying love between Anand and Madhumati, and how even death couldn’t keep them from eventually coming together. In this glowing era for Bollywood romances, both Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala are effortless as they fall in love amidst the hills, sing and dance to yet another memorable soundtrack by Salil Chaudhary, and share moments of poignant romance as the plot twists and turns in classic Hindi potboiler fashion. A guidebook to Bollywood paranormal romance 101.

11. Raincoat (2004)

romantic movie review times of india

There re only few films more criminally underrated in the new millennium than this poignant romance directed by Rituparna Ghosh, and starring Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgn. ‘Raincoat’ is a modern retelling of an O. Henry classic called ‘Gift Of The Magi’, wherein two long-lost lovers meet one night, 6 years after they parted ways, to talk about where life has led them. And when they realise that both of them aren’t doing so well, they try to help each other out in an anti-climactic fashion. But in their conversations in the major part of the film lie all the highlights of the film. Rai and Devgn both mete out restrained performances to elevate the emotion film even more. A brooding tale of lost love.

10. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

romantic movie review times of india

‘Dil Chahta Hai’ is a seminal film in Bollywood for more reasons than one. What makes it a seminal romances is the wildly different outlook at love among the three friends whose life the film narrates. There’s Sameer, who is a hopeless romantic, forever in search of love, falling for almost every girl he encounters in search of ‘the one’. Then there’s Akash, who doesn’t believe in love at all till he finds his own ‘the one’. And Sid isn’t interested in trivial romance and looks for a mature, deep relationship. Even a decade and a half on, DCH mirrors the views of youth on love bang-on. It is the holy grail of 21st Century Bollywood romances.

9. Lamhe (1991)

romantic movie review times of india

Yash Chopra is hailed as “The King Of Romance”. The ace director churned out one iconic film after another in a career spanning decades, but ‘Lamhe’ remains his boldest and his personal favourite. It also features a sensational performance by lead actress Sridevi, who portrays a duo of mother and daughter, with whom the protagonist (Anil Kapoor) falls in love in different eras. Though its ahead-of-its-time storyline (an age gap romance) made it an abysmal disaster at the box office when it first released in India, the film was a raging success overseas and garnered a host of accolades, and has since picked up a cult following. An unconventional bright spot in Bollywood’s sordid conventional history of cliches.

8. Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959)

romantic movie review times of india

Riding high on the success of ‘Pyaasa’, Guru Dutt was finally free to do the kind of films he wanted to. So he followed ‘Pyaasa’ up with another tragic, melancholy tale of a film director who casts an unknown woman as Paro in a rendition of ‘Devdas’ , but soon falls prey to the emotional turmoils in his life, while the woman becomes a superstar. Both Dutt and Waheeda Rahman The film, considered by many to be ahead of its time, tanked without a trace at the box office. In a crude example of ‘art imitates life’, much like the protagonist’s last film in KKP is a disaster, this was Dutt’s last film as a director. But it was revived through a cult following in the 80s and is now considered one of the finest films to have emerged from Bollywood.

7. Barsaat (1949)

romantic movie review times of india

Just before the onset of the golden era of Indian cinema, a lanky newbie named Raj Kapoor made a film, every aspect of which would become iconic in due course, may it be the jodi of Raj Kapoor-Nargis, the music by debutants Shankar-Jaikishan or the voice of the then-new chanteuse Lata Mangeshkar. Even the poster of ‘Barsaat’ would go on to inspire the logo of RK Studio, which Kapoor built upon the success of this film. ‘Barsaat’ revolves around the love stories of two best friends, one of whom is faithful and true, while the other is just a womanizer. How both relationships fare under the pressure of time, society and emotions forms the crux of the story. ‘Barsaat’ is one of the films which laid the foundation for romances in Bollywood, as well as the mood of films in decades to come.

6. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)

romantic movie review times of india

On the surface, ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya…’ is a routine ‘boy-meets-girl’ kind of story. So what makes it the one of the most influential, referenced and imitated Bollywood films of all time? Plenty of things. Firstly, it lays focus on expatriates harbouring Indian values, something which hadn’t been shown n Bollywood celluloid then. The scenic European locations give the story a refreshing spin as well. Its soundtrack, produced by 90s staples Jatin-Lalit, remains one of the most memorable from the decade. The duo of SRK-Kajol play off each other’s contrasting energies well. But the most important virtue of the film, as elucidated by Scott Jordan Harris, writing for Roger Ebert’s website, is its ability to effectively convey two opposing themes appealing to different portions of society. He said, “It argues that we should follow our hearts and chase happiness wherever it leads, regardless of the obstacles in our paths, while simultaneously suggesting we should respect the ways of our elders, particularly our parents, and do nothing that challenges their will.”

5. Guide (1965)

romantic movie review times of india

The story of an ex-convict turned guide and a married woman, who he takes in and supports in her dreams despite obstacles, is a winning formula for a cutesy romance. However, ‘Guide’ is an unconventional romance in more respects than one – its protagonist isn’t infallible, he lies and cheats, although for love, and he even drinks and gambles his life away. The leading lady isn’t an epitome of nazaqat and beauty at all times – she is emotional tormented, and wrenches her lover for no apparent reason when she becomes successful. The film goes way past the ‘happily ever after’ and contemplates upon the existence and ideals of its protagonist towards the end. And for the lovers of quintessential romances, ‘Guide’ has aplenty to offer as well. Both Anand and Rahman eke out knockout performances both in the romantic and dramatic area. S.D. Burman’s soundtrack is one of the very best Hindi Cinema has to offer. ‘Guide’ is an unforgettable blend of textbook romance and unconventional drama.

4. Awaara (1955)

romantic movie review times of india

Raj Kapoor is considered India’s greatest showman, and he has brought his charm to many characters on celluloid. The most well-known of them all, however, is his Chaplin-esque ‘little tramp’, and ‘Awaara’ was where he appeared as the tramp for the first time. The film is the story of the intertwining lives of a vagrant Raj and a privileged Rita, while also shedding light on Raj’s past. The iconic pair of Raj Kapoor-Nargis are at the height of their powers in ‘Awaara’. The film is full of love, life, passion and musical interludes, but it also touches upon a social vein which goes beyond to the Indian milieu. That is probably the reason ‘Awaara’ was India’s first global phenomenon in cinema, earning ardent fandom across Asia and the Soviet Union, where people viewed the film many times over too! And the song ‘Awaara Hoon’ (“I’m a vagabond”) still plays across the world. Such was the impact of this evergreen classic.

3. Devdas (1955)

romantic movie review times of india

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s ‘Devdas’ is one of the most renowned works in Indian literature. Naturally, it has been adapted for the screen, big and small, multiple times and in multiple languages, the version most fresh in memory probably being Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 adaptation. But it is the 1955 iteration of the story of Devdas, Paro and Chandramukhi during the feudal times in Bengal that is sure to stand the test of time as a breathtaking, poignant tragedy. Dilip Kumar, the ‘tragedy king’ himself, gives an intense, stirring performance as Devdas, like it were a role he was born to play. S.D. Burman weaves his magic into yet another film, with a soundtrack partly inspired by thumri and tawaif cultures, both of which Chandramukhi’s profession as a prostitute represents. The film also aces in cinematography and lighting under Kamal Bose, that enhances the emotional torment of the tight-lipped protagonist. While the SLB’s version is technically superior, this film wins on a sheer wrenching rendition of its source material.

romantic movie review times of india

There’s no better way to describe ‘Pyaasa’ than “a poetic love letter to poetry.” It is the haunting story of Vijay, a gifted but indigent poet, who is ill-treated until he is mistaken for being dead and becomes a posthumous sensation. It is only his mother, a prostitute with a heart of gold and a wandering masseuse named Jafar who stay by his side. Every line in ‘Pyaasa’ is a contemplative expression, every song a commentary on the way things run in a selfish universe. In a soulful ode to the art of tragedy, Guru Dutt embodies the stricken poet with an heart-rending panache. And then there’s the actual humane romance between him and Waheeda Rehman as Gulabo in her first major leading role, which is purely acted by both leads as well. A single line from a song in the film can be used to describe all of it. “Ye mahalon, ye takhton, ye taajon ki duniya. Ye insaan ke dushman samaajon ki duniya. Ye daulat ke bhukhe rawaajon ki duniya. Ye duniya agar mil bhi jaaye to kya hai.”  (This world of castles, thrones and crowns. This world of a society which is man’s enemy. This world of customs hungry for money. What good will having this world do to me!)

1. Mughal-e-Azam (1961)

romantic movie review times of india

Only one word can describe this historical drama about the love blossoming between Mughal  shehzaade Salim and court dancer Nadira (who he renames Anarkali) and his father’s chagrin about it: mammoth. Everything from the the widest release a Hindi movie had ever seen till date to the massive sets, some of which exceeded the budgets for a typical film then, are proof of the epic proportions of Mughal-e-Azam. But unlike SLB’s latest fares, the magnanimous proportions of ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ take nothing away from its characters. As floored as one gets by Madhubala’s iconic dance in a palace of mirrors during ‘Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya’, the acting chops shown by Dilip Kumar and Madhubala expressing profound love in flawless Urdu in the light of a sole candle floor us even more. I’m a true blue Bollywood fan, and I like many Bollywood movies, but there’s few that I adore with all my heart; ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ is one of them. It is a landmark achievement in the history of Indian cinema, and thus a worthy crowning jewel atop this list.

19 Best Bollywood Romantic Movies That Define Love

Best Bollywood romantic movies

The relationship between Bollywood and romance has been going on since ages. With every film we see, we all learn a new definition of love, from Kuch Kuch Hota hai we learnt ‘Pyaar dosti hai’ and from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil we learnt about ‘Ek tarfa pyaar ki taakat’. We have seen a vast difference on how filmmakers are defining love and how the audience is actually relating to the characters. So to make you a little love sick this Valentine's Day, we bring you a list of Bollywood romantic movies you should definitely watch.

1. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani directed by Ayan Mukherji, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur. This film was a full entertainer, be it the storyline, songs, casting or the chemistry between Ranbir and Deepika, the film was loved by the audience. The story revolves around Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) and Naina (Deepika Padukone), and how they meet in two different but important life stages, and fall in love. We love how this film celebrates love and friendship. Ayan Mukherji truly did a fantastic job with the direction and execution of the film.

Bollywood Romantic Movie: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

2. Ram Leela (2013)

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, featuring the power couple of the industry Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, Ram Leela was their first film together. Adapted from Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', the film revolves around Ram (Ranveer Singh) and Leela (Deepika Padukone) who belong to rival families Rajadi and Sanera, but fall in love with each other and how they need to make a sacrifice for their love. This film was a visual treat to the audience and has pushed the boundaries of storytelling in the Indian film industry.

Bollywood Romantic Movie: Ram Leela

3. Manmarziyaan (2018)

A new-age love story directed by Anurag Kashyap, starring Taapsee Pannu, Abhishek Bachchan and Vicky Kaushal, this film is a conventional love triangle. Manmarziyan has a whole new and fresh take on love and relationships and that is exactly what touched the audience. Unlike any other Anurag Kashyap movie this film depicts the confusion and emotions a person faces. The story revolves around Rumi (Taapsee Pannu) and Vicky (Vicky Kaushal) who are in love but when it comes to marriage Vicky gets cold feet and avoids the conversation. After giving up on her one true love Rumi agrees to have an arranged marriage with Robbie, who also falls in love with her even after knowing about Vicky. The story then continues with how the three deal with love.

Bollywood Romantic Movie: Manmarziyaan

4. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)

A film about unconditional love, heartbreak and learning, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil  directed by Karan Johar features Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan. What made the audience connect to the film was the story about one-sided love and how in some way or the other we have experienced it. The story is about Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) and Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) who become friends and Ayan falls in love with her, but Alizeh does not feel the same way, and how he deals with his one-sided relationship. This movie made us laugh, cry and fall in love with the characters. Not just the storyline, the songs from the film were catchy and a hit.

Bollywood Romantic Movie: Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

5. Aashiqui 2 (2013)

Bollywood Romantic Movie : Aashiqui 2

6. Rockstar (2011)

You can trust Imiaz Ali when it comes to romantic movies. He gives the audience an experience that is worth their time and money. Rockstar , starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri is a masterpiece and is a must watch if you haven’t watched it already. The film is about JJ (Ranbir Kapoor) who aspires to become a music sensation. He then follows the advice of his college canteen manager about ‘get you heartbroken and you can become a rockstar’. JJ then goes to the prettiest girl on campus Heer (Nargis Fakhri) and then begins their love story filled with complexities. So if you appreciate good cinema then add this to your watch list. Not just the storyline we can’t stop but appreciate this film's album, each and every song was made to perfection and to date we haven’t heard a better album than the one in Rockstar.

Bollywood Romantic Movie: Rockstar

7. Khoobsurat (2014)

Bollywood Romantic Movie: Khoobsurat

8. Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)

Dum Laga Ke Haisha  starring Bhumi Pednekar and Ayushmann Khurrana, was Bhumi’s debut film and the actress got a lot of praise for her transformation for her role as Sandhya. This film had such a fresh concept in the romantic genre. The story revolves around Prem (Ayushmann Khurrana) a school dropout who marries Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar) a well educated but overweight girl. Prem is embarrassed about his wife and passes comments on her, but the two decide to take part in a couples race where they come closer. Director Sharat kataria has done a wonderful job with this simple but meaningful story telling. And as for the actors both Bhumi and Ayushmann have a long way to go!

Bollywood Romantic Movie: Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)

9. Barfi (2012)

Barfi ,  directed by Anurag Basu is such a pure story and melts our hearts everytime we see it. Starring Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor and Ileana D’cruz this movie is filled with love, joy and heartbreak. The story revolves around Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor) a hearing and speech-impaired man who falls in love with Shruti (Ileana D’cruz), but due to societal pressure she marries someone else. Years later, she learns that Barfi is in love with Jilmil (Priyanka Chopra), an autistic girl, and she then rethinks her own marriage. Each and every character in this film was excellent. Not just the acting, the direction, screenplay and the music was heart-warming.

Bollywood Romantic Movie : Barfi (2012)

10. Lootera

The film is inspired by the beautiful story titled The Last Leaf by O.Henry. With Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh in the lead cast, this was one of the most mature love stories seen in the current generation. It was visually aesthetic as the storyline lensed the love story of a con man Atmanand Tripathi played by Ranveer Singh and Pakhi, daughter of a Zamindar played by Sonakshi Sinha.  Lootera was one of the most beautiful love stories where the victim, Pakhi finds herself drawn to this con man - the betrayal, the lies all lead to a silent love that both of them feel very strongly, but one that has no destination to reach. Bollywood lovers found a classic love story so beautifully portrayed on the big screen that is quite unconventional yet leaves a lasting impression.

Best Bollywood romantic movies: Lootera

11. Raanjhanaa

One of Aanand L.Rai's finest love stories based in a small town. Raanjhanaa , shot extensively in Benaras - Kundan played by Dhanush and Zoya played by Sonam Kapoor had an innocence about them that affected movie lovers. The typical one-sided love story is further imbued with the colourful streets of Benaras, mellifluous tunes, a flawless screenplay, and witty dialogues. Zoya, who finds Kundan to be not at par with her intellectually, is deeply desired by him. This small-town love story is one of the all-time favourites for Bollywood lovers for its simple yet heart-wrenching storyline.

Best Bollywood romantic movie : Raanjhanaa

12. Tamasha

Another gem by Imtiaz Ali with one of the most beloved on-screen couples of recent times - Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. Like every other Imtiaz Ali film, Tamasha too came with a very thought-provoking yet complex storyline - beautifully interlaced with the battle between matters of the heart and mind. The depiction of how everyday life changes us in ways we don't see right then - it was a rather mature love story that saw some superlative performances. Though the audience for this film is very selective - it is a story that stays with you. There's no unnecessary drama or exaggeration, there is a raw realism on how two people meet, how their hearts feel as they try their best to not be a misfit amidst the daily hustle and bustle of corporate jobs and all the rules one needs to abide by in the society.

Best Bollywood romantic movie: Tamasha

Love has a different definition for everyone. These are a few of the classic Bollywood films that show different layers of a love story. The varying stories are what makes one experience different kinds of love stories and the learnings that come with them. These are sure to top your list if you are a hardcore lover of romantic films.

13. Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na

Sometimes, love may appear in the form of your college best friend, but sometimes, the path to finding this love will be much more scenic. In the film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Aditi (Genelia D'Souza) and Jai (Imran Khan) are two college best friends who appear to be the ideal couple to those around them but are completely clueless about themselves. They are an unbreakable team who don't recognize their feelings for one another until they are completely cornered. It undoubtedly strengthened the Bollywood catchphrase "pyaar dosti hai"—your best friend is your best partner—and that this is true in the majority of situations.

Best Bollywood romantic movies: Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na

14. Jab We Met

Best Bollywood romantic movies: Jab We Met

15. Socha Na Tha

In Socha Na Tha, Viren (Abhay Deol) and Aditi (Ayesha Takia) meet in a very predictable way, but it's the unpredictableness of their relationship that feels natural. The main characters put up with their parents' dramatic behaviour over small things and even try living apart, but when they finally reconcile in the end, it seems as though it was meant to be. It was a slice-of-life movie with a love story at its heart that felt both relatable and appealing. A typical love story was presented in the least typical way possible. When it comes to romance, the movie hits the right notes without feeling mushy. Socha Na Tha is a movie that approaches love with its innocence, which is a quality that will never feel out of date. It does this with an honest and heartfelt approach.

Best Bollywood romantic movies: Socha Na Tha

16. Break Ke Baad

Best Bollywood romantic movies: Break Ke Baad

17. Love Aaj Kal

Love Aaj Kal (2009) is a must-watch Bollywood romantic movie. Director Imtiaz Ali works his charm once again in this sweet romantic drama starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. Released in 2009, the movie explores the concept of love in different time periods. The first narrative shows modern-day love following the story of Jai and Meera, running parallel to the second narrative of love set in the 1960s following Veer and Harleen. The film explores themes of love, commitment, and the changing dynamics of relationships over time, portraying the complexities of modern relationships.

Best Bollywood Romantic Movies: Love Aaj Kal

Love Aaj Kal (2020) was made featuring Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan.

18. Veer Zaara

Veer Zaara (2004) is an iconic film that epitomises love and the fight for it. Directed by Yash Chopra and starring Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta, the movie tells the story of an Indian Air Force Pilot who falls in love with a Pakistani woman named Zaara. Their love story faces numerous obstacles, and they fight for their love. The movie also stars Rani Mukerji as a lawyer who helps Veer get out of prison.

Best Bollywood Romantic Movies: Veer Zaara

Veer-Zaara is indeed a story of enduring love where the characters don't give up on their love despite facing numerous challenges. It portrays the idea that true love can withstand the test of time, distance, and adversity.

19. Jab Tak Hai Jaan

Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012), directed by the King of Romance Yash Chopra, explores the theme of love, sacrifice, and destiny. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Anushka Sharma in lead roles, the movie is set in London and India and follows the life of a man named Samar. Samar and Meera pursue a relationship in London; however, he returns to India when she leaves him and becomes a bomb disposal specialist. He meets Akira, a journalist, and a love triangle is formed. She falls in love with Samar but decides to reunite the lovers Meera and Samar. The movie is an emotional rollercoaster filled with joy, sorrow and much more.

Best Bollywood Romantic Movies: Jab Tak Hai Jaan

Love and Romance are emotions and themes that Indian filmmakers have woven their scripts and plots around since the onset of cinema in the country. From the legendary ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ to ‘Dil Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, Bollywood Romantic movies have told numerous tales of love in all its shades.

However, the definition of ‘Love’ has been redefined in Indian cinema recently. The new millennium movies did not believe in the stereotypical “Do Jism Ek Jaan” and “Jiyenge to Saath. Marenge to Saath” definition of love that had been shown on the big screen again and again for decades in Indian Cinema. The new love stories brought a new refreshing perspective to Hindi love stories and were more relatable to today’s generation and youth.

It’s a love story between a conman – Atmanand Tripathi (Ranbir Singh) and Pakhi (Sonakshi Sinha), the daughter of a Zamindar who was one of his victims. The beauty of this movie is in its slow pace and cinematic approach to portraying love with a finesse otherwise uncommon in Bollywood. For lovers of classic cinema and genuine art, Lootera remains one of the best Bollywood romantic movies of all time and a cinematic gem.

Another gem by Imtiaz Ali, Tamasha is one of the bravest big-screen experiments in recent times. A story of finding your soul and heart amidst the chaos of your everyday life, Tamasha is miles apart from other movies in the genre. The love and emotions in this movie show a level of maturity and come of age, unlike any other Bollywood flicks. Tamasha is a movie not for everyone – it is slow in its pace, and lacks fireworks or melodrama but it beautifully captures the hearts of several youngsters trying to fit themselves in corporate jobs and societal rules while their heart lies elsewhere.

13 Best Bollywood Rom-Coms: All the Modern Bollywood Romance Movies to Watch Right Now

Various Bollywood romcom stills

The best modern Bollywood rom-coms prove that no matter where you live or which language you speak, there’s nothing like that warm fuzzy feeling of a romantic comedy.

Despite the growth of the Hindi language film industry and the global appeal of movies coming out of the industry, however, it often feels like a familiar few vintage titles from the late 1990s and early 2000s still dominate the conversation surrounding Bollywood. But contemporary Bollywood rom-coms deserve to be celebrated.

It has been estimated that Bollywood, the industry that makes the most films every year, produces films that are watched by over  2.6 million people worldwide, and that number is only growing as streaming services become increasingly accessible and actors begin to hop industries. With performers like  Deepika Padukone and  Priyanka Chopra traveling across the world and lending some of their talent to the West, familiar faces are beginning to pop up in the Bollywood and Hollywood industries, likely piquing the interests of audiences.

Though classics can offer the perfect amount of nostalgia, we can’t help but feel like the occasional tired, sexist stabs and perpetuation of patriarchal ideals are just not doing it for us anymore. It’s easy to revisit the iconic films we knew as kids, the ones we initially thought were harmless, and forget that the love stories of yester-year were often  told through a misogynistic lens. Though there’s still quite a ways to go, and innumerable issues in the industry remain, the newer generation of films has actually begun to tell more diverse and inclusive stories of romance, uplifting female storytellers and directors, while visiting previously unexplored themes like mental health and sexuality.

If you’re looking for a dose of comfort and fun, and you have a few hours to spare, look no further than this list of the 13 best modern Bollywood romantic comedies.

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani  (2013)

Where to watch:   Amazon Prime Video

Ask any Bollywood fan what their favorite films are and  Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani will likely be on the list. This movie follows a group of unlikely friends through a trip in the Himalayas, joining them as they fall in love, experience heartbreak, and explore independence from their parents for the first time. After a time jump, the friendship is revisited again but this time with the backdrop of a destination wedding filled with music, drama, and gorgeous clothing. Everything about this film tugs on your heartstrings, whether it's the endearing dialogue, the friendship goals, the love story that gives you butterflies, or the amazing soundtrack.

Shuddh Desi Romance  (2013)

A number of delightful romantic comedy tropes and classic elements of the genre show up in this movie, but it manages to resist predictability at every turn. Its characters are real and lovable, and the two leading women in the film exhibit a level of freedom and agency over their own lives that was previously quite rare for female characters in Bollywood. It seeks to challenge the social norms of marriage as an institution while managing to be perfectly romantic and deeply funny at the same time.

Queen  (2013)

Where to watch:   Netflix

This is the type of feel-good film that Bollywood thrives off of, and audiences will continue loving this one for decades to come. The film follows a small town girl whose fiance leaves her at the altar, but she surprises all those who expect her to sit idly and weep in response by deciding to go on her honeymoon… alone. Cue: a slightly naive girl roaming Europe, making friends in her hostel, accidentally eating snails in Paris, and learning more about the world around her than she could have ever imagined. This love story isn’t with someone else, but with herself, and we could always use a little more self-love.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania  (2014)

Where to watch:   Netflix ,   Prime Video

Keke Palmer's Birthday Dress Was So “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”

Die-hard fans of Bollywood will immediately recognize this story as a tribute to the 1995 Bollywood favorite,  Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge , focusing on a young girl from a small town who meets a lover that matches her energy (but not her parents’ list of requirements in a husband) as she takes one last trip to the big city before her upcoming arranged marriage. While it’s not an entirely new story, it’s one that’s full of good one-liners, fun musical numbers, and unreal chemistry between the two leads.

Dil Dhadakne Do  (2015)

This movie has everything that makes it the perfect romantic comedy – a star-studded cast, beautiful locations (it takes place on a Mediterranean cruise!), a heartfelt script, and a soundtrack with fun songs that are paired with memorable hook steps. It’s a family drama, but a not-so-typical one, exploring topics of divorce, misogyny, interfaith relationships, and unconventional marriages, which is outside the status quo for most Bollywood films.

Phillauri  (2016)

Where to watch:   Hulu

Romantic comedies often ask the audience to suspend disbelief, and this quirky ghost story definitely requires a bit of that. With two love stories in one film, each occurring a century apart from the other, it has something for everyone, from a bygone forbidden romance with folk music as a backdrop to a modern young couple grappling with the realities of lifelong commitment. This movie bridges two generations by using the ghosts of India’s colonial past (literally and figuratively) to remind us of the love and life lost under Britain’s violent rule.

Dear Zindagi  (2016)

This coming of age story focuses on a young woman who repairs her relationship with herself and her inner child as she works to understand her past traumas with the help of regular meetings with a therapist. Mental health and therapy is a topic not often discussed in Bollywood films, especially not the mainstream ones. The slice-of-life nature of the film makes it relatable and an easy watch, but the topics and themes that are explored make it an impactful film that is a must-watch.

Tumhari Sulu  (2017)

Where to watch:   Prime Video

It’s not hard to find films in Bollywood where a housewife or a mother is treated with condescension, written in as nothing more than a punchline. In this movie, one such suburban housewife stumbles into the role of a popular and seductive late-night radio host, subverting that common “aunty” stereotype by presenting us with a character that is daring and sincere in all her mishaps as she barrels towards creating an identity for herself outside of the home. The romance in this story is not showy nor is it extravagant, but rather rooted in the idea that an ordinary love is just as fulfilling and worthwhile even without the grandiosity we’re used to seeing.

Love Per Square Foot (2018)

For fans of the marriage of convenience trope, this movie is a boy-meets-girl romance that’s pushed forward by the struggles of being middle class in a big city, as two strangers agree to enter a relationship with the sole purpose of qualifying for a housing lottery. The two leads have serious chemistry on-screen, and the hijinks that ensue due to their scheming make this an especially fun watch. If you’ve ever dreamt of either falling in love or finding affordable housing, this one’s for you.

Manmarziyaan  (2018)

This film is an underrated and slightly darker take on a modern day love story. Love triangles are commonplace in the romantic comedy genre, but this one puts the power in the hands of an unconventional female protagonist while fully allowing its lovers to be the sometimes confused, often lonely young people that they actually are. The dialogue is witty and smart, and the plot is fun. The characters are definitely flawed, but you still find yourself rooting for them as you watch how their story unfolds.

Badhaai Ho (2018)

Could you imagine being in your 20s when your parents reveal an unplanned pregnancy? That’s exactly what happens to the lead character in this film as he tries to navigate his own rocky romantic relationships, and it’s the perfect set up for a movie that’s as hilarious as it is earnest in its reaction to this anomaly. This story dares to explore what intimacy and love looks like when it’s not so young anymore, and it works brilliantly to remind us that parents are people, too.

Ek Ladki Koh Dekha Toh Aisa Laga  (2019)

While films that have explored LGBTQ relationships in Bollywood in the past have relied on stereotypes and sloppy storytelling,  Ek Ladki Koh Dekha Toh Aisa Laga doesn’t fall into those tropes. This is the simple story of a girl who falls in love with another girl and is trying her best to make her family understand. There are no frills or fancy locations, the characters are easy to love, and the romance is wholesomely charming.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan  (2020)

The laugh-out-loud comedy of this movie is perfectly balanced by a story that completely subverts the same stereotypes and punchline formulas that Bollywood has previously forced upon gay men. Another queer love story from recent years, this film seeks to unravel the homophobia that results from a deeply patriarchal family structure using a level of charm that cannot be beat. It’ll leave you smiling and yearning for a similar love that transcends fear and caution.

Romantic Review: Neither Holds Logic Nor Plays Magic

Romantic Review: Neither Holds Logic Nor Plays Magic

Movie: Romantic Rating: 2/5 Banner: Puri Connects Cast: Akash Puri, Ketika Sharma, Ramya Krishna, Uttej, Sunaina, and others Music: Sunil Kashyap Editor: Junaid Siddiqui Director of Photography: Naresh Rana Producers: Puri Jagannadh, Charmme Kaur Story, screenplay, dialogues: Puri Jagannadh Directed by: Anil Paduri Release Date: October 29, 2021

From Prabhas to Rajamouli, top names have come forward to promote “Romantic”, the latest film starring Akash Puri, director Puri Jagannadh’s son. No wonder that the film has created a lot of buzz in the last two weeks.

With high-pitched publicity and an interesting trailer, “Romantic” has managed to garner attention. The film is here. Let’s analyze.

Story: Set in Goa, the story begins with the voiceover of a police officer Ramya Gowarikar (Ramya Krishna), who narrates the intense and greatest love she had witnessed in her stint there.

Vasco Da Gama (Akash Puri), whose police officer’s father was killed on duty, has only one aim – to earn big money so that he can run a charity foundation for his grandmother Mary (Rama Prabha). He quickly joins the gang of smugglers.

When his boss gets killed in a shootout, Vasco Da Gama becomes rich, but the police are chasing him. Meanwhile, the young boy is floored by the irresistible local beauty Monica (Ketika Sharma).

Ramya Gowarikar arrests Vasco Da Gama in a case, and he gets a life sentence in that case. What will happen to his love story with Monica?

Artistes’ Performances: Akash Puri still possesses boyish looks. Though he is sincere in his effort and tries playing the gangster part convincingly, the role is too big for the young boy to carry on his shoulders. He looks convincing in part, where he has to express feelings when he sees the charming beauty of Ketika Sharma. But when he mouths dialogues like mass heroes do, he looks unconvincing.

Ketika Sharma will surely skip the heartbeat of youngsters. Her unabashed display of skin and beautiful face will strike a chord with the target audiences. The romantic (lustful) moments of Akash Puri and Ketika Sharma are aimed at the galleries.

Ramya Krishna, who essays a poorly written character, brings a lot of dignity to otherwise incoherent proceedings. Sunaina’s comedy is okay. Uttej’s role is unconvincing.

Technical Excellence: The film is entirely shot in Goa, and the cinematographer captures the locations beautifully. More than the locations, the cameraman films the figure of Ketika Sharma captivatingly.

Music is a mixed bag. Dialogues written by Puri Jagannadh stand out.

Highlights: Ketika Sharma’s skin show Puri’s mark dialogues

Drawback: Illogical Plot No rhyme and reason Lack of emotional connect

Analysis “Romantic” is directed by newcomer Anil Paduri, a long-time associate of Puri Jagannadh. But the film has a stamp of Puri Jagannadh’s direction throughout because he has written the story, screenplay, and dialogue. By the end of the film, we may wonder what the story is about.

Is this story about two young lovers who don’t know the difference between love and lust, like and desire? Or is it about a young boy’s ill fate as he attempts to be a godfather?

The protagonist is presented as a typical Puri Jagannadh’s reckless hero, who mouths Hindi dialogues laced with philosophical quotations, who wants to do ‘it’ with his girl ‘tonight’, and one who is either busy 'pattukovadam’ (touching) of guns and girl.

However, the hero has two objectives- one is to earn money and do some good for his locality and the other is to get the love of the girl he wants.

There is an entire song about the boy and girl talking or singing lines from Puri Jagannadh’s musings (his philosophical podcasts). While the song is beautiful to watch, it adds nothing to the main plot. Such is the aimlessness of this film.

“Desanni Preminchadam Easy Paisa Kharchu Undadu…Ammaini Premiste Sarada Teerchestadi,” says the hero in one scene saying he has not loved the girl yet. 15 or 20 minutes later, he says he can’t live without the girl. While one-liners sound good on paper, they don’t go well with the flow of the narrative.

Plus, the climax leaves us in utter disappointment.

So, what works in the film? The picturization of intense romantic moments between Ketika Sharma and Akash Puri. The girl is strikingly beautiful. Akash also is believable in romancing the girl than firing the bullets.

All said, “Romantic” is a true-blue Puri Jagannadh’s film that doesn’t rely on logic or proper story, but the characterization of the hero and heroine romance. It may appeal to a mass audience, but the film is not at all engrossing.

Bottom-line: Girl and Gun
