The Best Product Design Colleges In The US

product design phd in usa

By Eric Eng

Female graphic design smiling at the camera.

Choosing a college or university to study product design can be a significant decision, one that will shape your future career. With many quality institutions across the United States, determining the best fit can feel like quite a challenge. In this article, we explore the intricacies of product design as a career, the criteria for choosing a suitable college, the best product design colleges, the financial considerations of pursuing a college education, and how you can prepare for your time at a product design college.

Understanding Product Design as a Career

Product design is a vast and dynamic field that combines creativity, technological understanding, and business acumen. A product designer’s primary role involves developing innovative, functional, and visually appealing products that cater to consumer needs and preferences. They work closely with engineers and marketers to create products that are not only attractive and enjoyable to use but also feasible to manufacture and market.

Product designers are the masterminds behind the products we use every day. They are responsible for transforming ideas into tangible objects that enhance our lives. Whether it’s designing the sleek and intuitive interface of a smartphone or creating a comfortable and ergonomic chair, product designers play a crucial role in shaping the world around us.

The Role of a Product Designer

A product designer takes a product from concept to reality. They normally start with brainstorming and ideation, sketching out ideas to solve specific product challenges. From there, they move on to create detailed plans and models, working closely with engineers and manufacturers to ensure their designs can be made into functional products. They also play a role in testing and refining prototypes.

Imagine a product designer working on a new electric car. They would begin by researching the needs and desires of potential customers, analyzing market trends, and studying the latest advancements in electric vehicle technology. Armed with this knowledge, they would then start sketching out different concepts, exploring various shapes, sizes, and features that would make the car stand out from the competition.

View of a graphic designer working in front of her computer.

Once a concept is chosen, the product designer creates detailed plans and 3D models, considering every aspect of the car’s design, from the placement of the charging port to the layout of the interior. They would collaborate closely with engineers to ensure that the car meets safety and performance standards, while also working with manufacturers to find the best materials and production methods.

Product designers work across numerous industries, from electronics to home furnishings, fashion accessories, and automobiles. In addition to creating a physical design, product designers often consider factors like product usability, ergonomics, sustainability, aesthetics, and the overall user experience.

Skills Required for a Successful Product Design Career

Successful product designers often have varied skills, including research, sketching, 3D modeling, technical drawing, and an understanding of materials and manufacturing processes. Understanding the market, user behavior, and emerging trends are equally important. Soft skills like creative thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration are also crucial to negotiating design solutions within broader industry and business contexts.

Product designers are constantly learning and adapting to new technologies and design methodologies. They stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in their field, attending conferences, workshops, and networking events to expand their knowledge and connect with other professionals. They are curious individuals who are always seeking inspiration from various sources, whether it’s nature, art, or the latest innovations in other industries.

Being a product designer is not just about creating beautiful objects; it’s about understanding the needs and desires of users and translating them into meaningful and impactful designs. It’s a career that requires a unique blend of technical expertise, artistic vision, and a deep understanding of human behavior. Product designers have the power to shape the world we live in, making it more functional, enjoyable, and sustainable.

Criteria for Choosing a Product Design College

Several factors should influence your selection of a product design college. Do you want to specialize or maintain a general focus? What is the college’s reputation, and who will be teaching you? These factors can make a significant difference to your education and career outcomes.

When considering a product design college, there are several additional factors to take into account. Let’s explore some of these factors in more detail.

Accreditation and Reputation

Accreditation is an essential criterion for selecting a college. A school’s accreditation status indicates that it has met specific educational standards, offering you an assurance of quality. It is crucial to choose a college that is accredited by a recognized accrediting body in the field of product design.

Furthermore, the reputation of a college can help future employers recognize the value of your degree. A college with a strong reputation in the industry is more likely to have established connections with companies and organizations, providing you with better internship and job placement opportunities.

Along with accreditation, consider a school’s overall reputation as well. Look for colleges that have a track record of producing successful product designers. Consider factors like the college’s rating and student reviews, its history of job placement, and the success stories of its alumni.

Curriculum and Specializations

The curriculum is another vital consideration when choosing a product design college. Examine the course offerings and determine if they match your career aspirations. A well-rounded curriculum should cover a wide range of topics in product design, providing you with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills.

Preferably, look for a college that supports both the breadth and depth of knowledge in product design, covering everything from foundational principles to advanced topics and specialized fields. This will allow you to explore different aspects of product design and discover your specific areas of interest.

Lastly, keep in mind any specific areas of product design you’re interested in, such as industrial design, furniture design, or digital product design. Ensure the schools you’re considering offer the educational pathways to delve into these areas. Look for colleges that have specialized programs or concentrations in your desired field of study.

Faculty Expertise

The qualifications and expertise of the faculty can significantly impact your learning experience. Instructors with relevant industry experience can provide practical insights that greatly enrich classroom learning.

When researching product design colleges, take a close look at the faculty members. Ideally, they should have a combination of academic qualifications and real-world experience. Faculty members who are experienced product designers themselves, currently engaged in the field, and closely connected to the professional community can offer valuable mentorship and guidance.

Interacting with faculty members who are actively involved in the industry can expose you to the latest trends, technologies, and practices in product design. This will ensure that you are equipped with the updated and practical knowledge needed to excel in the ever-evolving field of product design.

By considering these additional factors, you can make a more informed decision when choosing a product design college. Remember to visit campuses, talk to current students and alumni, and gather as much information as possible to ensure that the college you choose aligns with your goals and aspirations.

The cost of product design programs varies widely depending on factors such as the type of college (public vs. private), location, and program length. In addition to tuition, you need to consider expenses such as housing, meals, books, and personal expenses.

Most colleges provide detailed information on estimated costs, allowing you to plan financially. It’s essential to budget carefully and consider cost-saving measures, such as living off-campus or choosing a college based in a city with a lower cost of living.

Scholarships and Financial Aid Options

Fortunately, many colleges offer scholarships and financial aid based on merit, need, or both. Research and apply for as many scholarships as you’re eligible for— even small scholarships can quickly add up to a significant amount.

Other forms of financial aid , such as work-study programs, grants, and student loans, can also help bridge the financial gap. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the college’s financial aid office for guidance.

Preparing for a Product Design College

Pursuing a product design degree requires a significant time and energy investment. It’s essential to prepare adequately before commencing your studies to ensure you make the most of the opportunities provided by your college.

View of a student drawing on a table.

High School Preparation

High school is an excellent time to begin preparing for a product design career. Taking art-related classes can enhance your creative skills, while classes in mathematics and science can provide the analytical skills necessary for product design. Taking computer classes can also be beneficial as many product designers use software programs in their work.

Portfolio Development

Lastly, work on developing a portfolio of your work. This could include school projects, freelance work, or personal projects. A strong portfolio is often a key factor in college admissions and can showcase both your creative abilities and your commitment to the discipline.

Overall, choosing a product design college is a significant decision. There are many excellent options to choose from, so take your time to research and consider each potential college. Remember that the right college for you is one that aligns with your career goals, financial situation, and personal preferences. Good luck on your journey into the exciting world of product design!

Ph.D. in Human Factors of Systems and Product Design

Human factors engineering plays a central role in the design and operation of many systems which involve humans as consumers, operators, controllers, passengers, and/or monitors. Inadequate or even suboptimal design can lead to market failure, product recall, system ineffectiveness and errors, rapid obsolescence, safety issues and hazards, and lack of viability as a consumer product or other human interface. To perform design, development, and evaluation of these systems, the ergonomist must gain proficiency in human visual and auditory processing and display design, cognitive ergonomics, usability testing, empirical methods, ethics and legal issues, and intellectual property development and protection. In this concentration, a two-pronged coursework path is designed to instill skill and knowledge in both: a) empirical research supported by human subject experimentation, and b) analytical, modeling, and physical measurement methodologies.

The PhD program in design is research training for those who have a master's degree.

More and more industries need the specialization that the PhD education provides: a good basis for leading work in business, administration, education and research.

About the programme

The PhD program is standardized to 180 ECTS credits, 3 years of full-time study.

It is academically linked to the Department of Design, where the main areas are product design, interaction design, graphic and information design, sustainable design, design theory and health-related design.

Read more about the programme

Programme structure

The programme consists of a coursework part of a minimum of 30 ECTS credits and a doctoral thesis. The thesis may consist of a monograph or a collection of several smaller works.

The coursework and the work on the thesis are carried out in parallel. It is recommended, however, that the coursework be completed early in the course of study. All the coursework must have been completed and approved before you submit the thesis.

The coursework can be taken at other faculties at NTNU or at other higher education institutions that provide doctoral education. You must have taken the final exam or received another form of assessment for all subjects included in the coursework.

You decide on the courses in agreement with your supervisor. The courses are adapted to the subject matter of your thesis.

Product design, also referred to as industrial design, is an inherently creative and interdisciplinary field that explores methods and tools for creating innovative objects, systems, and services . Successful product/industrial designers are skilled at uncovering opportunities, generating creative ideas, rapidly visualizing ideas, building physical and digital prototypes to test concepts, and strategically presenting concepts.

  • Research and Creative Scholarship

Product design coursework is hands-on and project-based. Classes are a blend of lectures and studios, where you will immediately apply your learning to test ideas and develop prototypes using the College of Design’s fabrication resources. The program is a "community of practice," meaning industry representatives are actively involved in the classroom and work directly with students on projects. Industry collaboration and sponsorship provides opportunities for real-world learning, portfolio building, and networking.

“Product design let me combine my passions for design, engineering, and business. I’m so thankful to have this unique, interdisciplinary curriculum and, more importantly, to be part of a tight-knit community of inspiring designers and like-minded thinkers. This program has taught me how fulfilling it is to be truly passionate and curious about my education.”

—Roohi Katarya (BS, Product Design)

Our faculty members actively conduct research on topics that range from food and toy design, to consumer perception, immersive environments, and more. Each professor and instructor brings their unique interests to the classroom, giving you a taste of the varied areas of product design research. Through research collaborations, studios, internships, and our fabrication facilities, you will have many opportunities to explore the field of product/industrial design as both an academic discipline and industry powerhouse.

Product Design & Industrial Design in the Twin Cities

At the University of Minnesota, collaborations between industry and academia are common due to the Twin Cities’ status as a major design center in the United States. Home to companies like Target, 3M, General Mills, Best Buy, Boston Scientific, Stratasys, and Medtronic, we are a global leader in medical, food, and agriculture products, as well as 3D printing, product marketing, and themed play structures.

With such a strong and varied business landscape, the Twin Cities has a consistently high demand for talented, well-educated industrial designers. The thriving design community also provides abundant opportunities, such as internships at local small-scale and large firms and ongoing mentoring relationships with alumni and industry, both inside and outside the classroom.

Urgent action needed on sale of hemp-derived cannabis products, HSC researcher says

Matthew Rossheim September 14, 2021 Unt Health Science Center Hsc

Rossheim’s research, “Intoxicating Cannabis Products in Vape Shops: United States 2023,” published this month in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine , is one of the first studies to document that the U.S. is acting as a recreational cannabis country, with intoxicating products being sold in stores across all 50 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.

“Without a medical cannabis card, you can walk into a store in any state and buy a cannabis product that will get you high,” said Rossheim, an associate professor of health administration and health policy at the HSC School of Public Health .

Since 2020, many types of intoxicating cannabis products have entered the U.S. market, he said. Hemp-derived ICPs, including hexahydrocannabinol – which can affect mood, pain perception and central nervous system functions – and the psychoactive substance delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol pose serious concerns about their youth-oriented marketing, potency and health effects. Some states have attempted to ban, restrict or regulate their sale, but these laws have been unsuccessful to date.

The U.S. Farm Bill, or Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, authorized the production of hemp and removed hemp and hemp seeds from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s schedule of controlled substances.

Regulations on hemp-derived products

Rossheim’s study shows that in states with limited or no delta-8 THC regulations, 92% of vape shops and other stores sold intoxicating cannabis products. In states with laws designed to limit potency or availability, 90% sold these products.

“It’s no surprise that regulations don’t work because these products are being designed to circumvent regulations,” Rossheim said. “Retailers are selling these intoxicating cannabis products as if they were hemp-produced T-shirts or shoes.

“This underscores the urgent need for comprehensive bans prohibiting any detectable levels of derived intoxicating cannabinoids that are well enforced, with product testing and large fines for noncompliance.”.

After adjusting for states where legal nonmedical cannabis is sold, Rossheim and colleagues from George Washington and Emory universities, HSC and the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation found a statistically significant reduction of sales in states where intoxicating synthetic products are banned. Vape shops and stores in states without bans had approximately 16 times the odds of selling intoxicating cannabis products, compared with those in states with bans.

Bans work, need strong enforcement

“Bans work, but they need to be comprehensive and enforced,” Rossheim said.

In May, a ban on intoxicating hemp products was proposed as a Farm Bill amendment by the U.S. House of Representatives. Previous legislation has made it easier for U.S. farmers to grow nonintoxicating varieties of cannabis, defined as hemp, for industrial and medical use.

“These derived products are a very different issue than naturally grown cannabis products. When pushing for the law, industry proponents said hemp is ‘rope, not dope,’ but now they are exploiting the language to sell intoxicating products,” Rossheim said.

Prior to 2020, he explained, most cannabis products on the market contained the naturally abundant delta 9 THC intoxicant.

“Since then, companies have created synthetic intoxicants, sprayed on hemp leaves, infused in candies and added to other foods and beverages. This is more dangerous than marijuana use,” Rossheim said.

The harms, laws being exploited

“Because there are limited studies at this point, we don’t know a lot about the harms of these chemically created products. Some have been found to contain pesticides, heavy metals and even chemical solvents.”

The U.S. has seen spikes in pediatric poisonings related to exposure of these products, and in 2023, one in nine high school seniors used delta 8 THC, one of the most popular types of derived intoxicating cannabis products, Rossheim said.

“Regulations so far haven’t worked because of bad actors who are constantly innovating these products to circumvent laws protecting public safety. These companies are exploiting current legislation to sell dangerous products that aren’t natural and were never intended by lawmakers to be legalized,” he said.

Rossheim and his research team are tracking the proposed federal Farm Bill amendment that would ban these products.

“Further legislative action also is needed to impose and enforce large fines and conduct product testing to ensure retailers are not selling these products,” Rossheim said.

A call for urgency

“Time is of the essence,” he said. “This study demonstrates that urgent action is needed to address the dangers in these products.”

Dr. Rossheim is traveling to conferences in major cities, including Denver and Chicago, to present these findings and urge action on this pressing public health danger.
