A new video: The Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory

The Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory (SISL) takes research that was built for airplane collision avoidance, and enhances it and broadens it to unmanned aircrafts, unmanned car vehicles, emergency services routing, sub-terranean vehicles, and space vehicles. The common theme is to make decisions with uncertain, ever-changing environments. “AI Safety is about ensuring that the algorithms that we develop behave in the way we expect and in a safe manner when deployed in the real world.” (15:48)

PhD | Teaching Requirement

Teaching experience is valuable for CS PhD students. It allows them to demonstrate their knowledge of CS topics, improve their public speaking and presentation skills, and explore future career options in academia.

Teaching Requirement

CS PhD Students are required to complete course assistantships (CA) or teaching fellow (TF) during their academic career for courses in Computer Science numbered 100 or above. This requirement can be completed with either 2-50% appointments or 4-25% appointments of CAships or TF for a total of 100%.

A CA receives the same salary and tuition benefits as a research assistant (RA). A TF receives a higher salary.

Note: The teaching requirement must be completed before the University Oral Examination.

Certificate of Distinction in Teaching Award

A graduating PhD student is eligible to receive a certificate of distinction in teaching if the following conditions are met:

• At least one CS faculty member who has supervised the student as a course assistant nominates the student for this distinction; this nomination is e-mailed to Jay Subramanian.
• The student should have completed five (5) 50% CAships as a Course Assistant (CA) in CS courses, of which at least one course should be taught as a Teaching Fellow (TF) with primary responsibility for organizing and teaching a course (tutored video does not qualify).

ICME Doctor of Philosophy

The Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME), and its predecessor program Scientific Computing and Computational Mathematics, has offered MS and PhD degrees in computational mathematics for over 30 years. Affiliated Faculty conduct groundbreaking research, train and advise graduate students, and provide over 60 courses in computational mathematics and scientific computing at both the undergraduate and graduate level, to the Stanford community.

Doctoral Program

We develop innovative computational and mathematical approaches for complex engineering and scientific problems, attracting talented PhD students from across the globe. Advised in research by more than 50 faculty from 20-plus departments, PhD students are immersed in a wide variety of fields including statistics and data science, machine and deep learning, control, optimization, numerical analysis, applied mathematics, high-performance computing, earth sciences, flow physics, graphics, bioengineering, genomics, economics and financial mathematics, molecular dynamics, and many more. PhD graduates find outstanding positions in industry and national laboratories as well as in academia.

ICME PhD students cultivate a broad and deep understanding of computational mathematics through core courses in matrix computations, optimization, stochastics, discrete mathematics, and PDEs and through their research work with ICME affiliated faculty.

The Ph.D. program is full-time and requires full tuition, most or all of which is normally covered by such support. Since Ph.D. students have 50% RAships or CAships, full time equals 8-10 units. Daniel E. Ho is the William Benjamin Scott and Luna M. Scott Professor of Law , Professor of Political Science , Professor of Computer Science (by courtesy), Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research , and Director of the Regulation, Evaluation, and Governance Lab (RegLab).

Ho serves on the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC), advising the White House on AI policy, as Senior Advisor on Responsible AI at the U.S. Department of Labor, on the Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT) of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, as a Public Member of the Administrative Conference of the United States (ACUS), and as Special Advisor to the ABA Task Force on Law and Artificial Intelligence . He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

His scholarship focuses on administrative law, regulatory policy, and antidiscrimination law. With the RegLab, his work has developed high-impact demonstration projects of data science and machine learning in public policy, through partnerships with a range of government agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, the Treasury Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Labor, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department, and Seattle and King County Public Health. The collaboration with Santa Clara County was awarded the Innovative Practice Gold Award for “the highest level of program innovation” to serve “community during the COVID-19 pandemic” by the National Association of County and City Health Officials.

He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and Ph.D. from Harvard University and clerked for Judge Stephen F. Williams on the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the John Bingham Hurlbut Award for Excellence in Teaching at Stanford Law School, the Carole Hafner Award for the best paper at the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law, the Best Empirical Paper Prize from the American Law and Economics Review, a Best Paper Award at the ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAccT), the Best Paper Award at the AAAI/ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society (AIES), and the Warren Miller prize for the best paper published in Political Analysis.

The Ph.D. Program in Computer Science is designed for students who want to contribute to the study of the description and representation of information, and the theory, design, analysis, implementation, and application of algorithmic processes that transform information.

Students receive advanced training in the scientific principles and technology required to develop and evaluate new computer systems and applications. Our curriculum covers all major areas of computer science, with active research in algorithms, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, data science, high-performance computing, human-computer interaction, software engineering, security science, machine learning, and computer systems.
