Early Nigerian writers, such as Amos Tutuola and Cyprian Ekwensi, fused these influences to create unique narratives that captured the essence of Nigerian life.

The Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), Nigeria Liquefied and Natural Gas Limited (LNG) and the Fertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) among other sponsors, have empowered 60 participants for the 2024 creative writing workshop from march 1-7 at the University of Abuja.

Delivering his keynote address on the theme ‘Empowering creative writers, shaping the future of Nigerian literature’, Prof. Emmanuel Sule of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Minna, Niger State, said three traits- creativity, activism and individual talent- must be the hall mark of every aspiring creative writer who wants to succeed in the art.

He said a writer must be actively involved in the creation of change in the society and must be political in taking a stand concerning issues affecting the society, particularly one that catches their craft.

He said “creativity, activism and individual talent must be part of the life of a creative writer. You must have a talent for the craft and a bold conscience and temper for activism. These must be synthesized in your work. You must also have the creative power of imagination for therein is the domain of invention. This included breaking boundaries and interrogating complacency.

“You must find a niche, one that suits your individual talent, your craft must come first and this must not be compromised, be analytical and critical, take position in all that you have against the world and find time to write.”

In his goodwill message, the acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki, said the NAL’s commitment in nurturing the next generation of leaders, scholars and creative talents demonstrates an unwavering dedication to academic excellence and creative development that has emerged as a beacon of hope.

Represented by former Vice-Chancellor of Kogi State University, Lokoja, Prof. Angela Freeman Miri, Maiyaki urged the 60 participants of the maiden edition of the workshop to transform individual lives and shape the destinies of nations.

“The 60 shortlisted participants, as you embark on a journey that transforms individual lives and shapes nations’ destinies, you represent the embodiment of intellectual curiosity, resilience, and a commitment to positively impacting the creative economy of the world. You pursuit is not merely an academic endeavour, but a noble quest to contribute to the betterment of society,” he said.

When it comes to writing exercises in Nigeria, participants are often exposed to a diverse range of activities that cater to various writing styles and genres. These exercises may include creative writing prompts, narrative writing challenges, poetry workshops, fiction and non-fiction analysis, as well as scriptwriting tasks. Each exercise is carefully crafted to stimulate creativity, enhance writing skills, and encourage critical thinking among aspiring writers.

Key Elements of a Successful Writing Workshop

In a successful writing workshop, structure plays a significant role in guiding participants through their creative process. A well-designed framework ensures that writers are able to focus on their craft without feeling overwhelmed. Additionally, clear objectives and goals set at the beginning of the workshop help to create a sense of direction and purpose for the participants. This clarity paves the way for productive sessions where writers can hone their skills and develop their work effectively.

Facilitators in a successful writing workshop are not just instructors but also mentors who inspire and guide participants on their writing journey. Their expertise, encouragement, and constructive feedback are essential in nurturing the growth of writers. By creating a positive and supportive environment, facilitators can foster creativity, build confidence, and motivate participants to explore new ideas and techniques. The presence of knowledgeable and engaging facilitators is a key element in ensuring that writers derive maximum benefit from the workshop experience.

Finding the Right Writing Workshop for You

When embarking on the journey to find the appropriate writing workshop in Nigeria, consider your specific goals, interests, and skill level. SEO Consulting NG advocates for aspiring writers to evaluate the workshop’s focus and determine if it aligns with their writing objectives. This entails researching the workshop’s structure, curriculum, and instructor qualifications to ensure a beneficial experience.

Moreover, SEO Consulting NG encourages individuals to assess the workshop format that suits their learning style. Whether you thrive in a collaborative environment or prefer individual mentorship, selecting a workshop that complements your preferred mode of learning can significantly enhance your writing development. Prioritize workshops that offer a balance of theoretical instruction, practical exercises, and constructive feedback to nurture your writing talents effectively.

Common Challenges Faced in Writing Workshops

Navigating through the challenges encountered in writing workshops can be a pivotal aspect of one’s growth as a writer. One common obstacle faced by participants is the pressure to perform in front of others. The fear of judgment or the urge to impress can hinder creativity and inhibit the free flow of ideas. Overcoming this self-imposed pressure often involves cultivating a mindset of openness and vulnerability, allowing for honest exploration of one’s writing capabilities without the fear of criticism.

Another challenge writers often face in workshops is receiving and giving constructive feedback. Providing feedback that is both helpful and respectful requires a delicate balance of honesty and tact. Likewise, being open to receiving feedback can be daunting, especially when it involves criticism of personal work. Learning to approach feedback with a growth mindset, viewing it as an opportunity for improvement rather than a reflection of one’s abilities, can help writers glean valuable insights and enhance their craft. The ability to give and receive feedback gracefully is a skill that can greatly benefit writers in their artistic development.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Writing Exercises

When engaging in writing exercises during workshops, it is essential to approach each task with an open mind and a willingness to explore new ideas. Embrace the creative process and allow yourself to think outside the box. Remember that writing workshops are not just about producing polished pieces but also about honing your craft and experimenting with different techniques. Stay receptive to feedback from facilitators and peers, using it as a tool for growth and improvement. Embrace the opportunity to push past your comfort zone and challenge yourself to delve deeper into your writing.

Additionally, time management is crucial when participating in writing exercises. Set aside dedicated blocks of time for writing and stick to a schedule to ensure you make the most of the workshop experience. Prioritize tasks based on deadlines and importance, and break larger assignments into smaller, manageable chunks. By staying organized and disciplined in your approach, you can maximize your productivity and creativity during writing workshops. Remember, consistency and practice are key to developing your writing skills and making the most out of each exercise.

How to Stay Motivated in Writing Workshops

As you immerse yourself in the creative process, it’s normal to encounter moments of self-doubt or writer’s block. However, maintaining a positive mindset and focusing on your passion for writing can help you push through these challenges. Remember that every word you write and every exercise you complete is a step towards honing your craft and achieving your writing goals. Embrace the opportunity to learn from the workshop facilitators and your peers, and use their feedback to inspire and motivate you to keep striving for excellence.

Graduate College

Writing nonfiction at iowa.

Nonfiction writing is often misunderstood as a genre, one that eschews creativity to focus on the external through objectivity. However, the Nonfiction Writing Program (NWP) gives writers the opportunity to push back against stereotypes of the form and assert the creativity and vulnerability inherent in writing nonfiction.

Lucas Mann, associate professor in English & Communication at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, is an author and graduate of the NWP.

“There's still a lack of a frame of reference for nonfiction among students,” Mann says. “At Iowa, my idea of how many different ways nonfiction could suit me became apparent.”

Fi Okupe

For Mofiyinfoluwa (Fi) Okupe, a third-year MFA student, the ethos of the NWP allows her to focus on her craft and affirm the importance of excavating internal landscapes as a function of nonfiction writing   despite misguided expectations of the genre.

“Coming to Iowa made me take myself seriously as a writer,” Okupe says. “For me, nonfiction as a genre is a tool for self-expression, but more importantly, self-revelation.”

Taking writing seriously is a source of pride for the University of Iowa and for Iowa City as a UNESCO City of Literature. University grants and resources afford writers in the NWP unique opportunities to devote time and energy to their practice.

Both Mann and Okupe were recipients of the Stanley Award for International Research during their time in the NWP.

“I went to Venezuela for a month to look at baseball academies,” Mann describes. “I was writing my first book about minor league baseball and a lot of the players that I met in Iowa were either from Venezuela or had gone to these academies.”

Okupe traveled to Nigeria to work on her project Mothertongue: Matrilineal Reckonings and Remembrances.  “ Mothertongue   is a project committed to tracing matrilineal ancestry through the land of southwestern Nigeria,” Okupe explains.

Centering women’s stories is a cornerstone for Okupe’s work.

“Women’s stories have the potential to change the world and to reveal to us things about ourselves,” Okupe says. “None of our experiences are singular. We are all interwoven in a web of love and pain and hope and healing. I want the work that I do, both on and off the page, to constantly reflect that.”

Writers supporting writers through mentorship and community

Writers in the NWP receive integral support from faculty mentors and their community of peers in the program.

Okupe highlights the invaluable growth she experiences workshopping her writing with her thesis advisor, Assistant Professor Tisa Bryant.

“Professor Bryant has caused me to be so much more self-interrogating,” Okupe says. “She’ll point out if she thinks I’m withholding something, which is fine to do as long as you know why you’re doing it.”

Alongside mentorship from faculty, the students in the program provide fundamental learning experiences for one another. Mann says, “The kind of students that were in the program and the kind of work that those folks were doing was just as challenging and exciting as the classroom.”

During their time in the NWP, graduate students also teach undergraduate classes in creative nonfiction.

Teaching carries potential to engage a reciprocal process of examining and rethinking one’s own work. Okupe describes how teaching opens new perspectives about her writing.

“I was able to articulate things differently from occupying the position of an instructor,” Okupe says. “The students helped me to process my work differently. Teaching creative nonfiction at the University of Iowa enriched my writing because anything you teach you get better at.”

Teaching also involves cultivating a classroom environment where students, who may or may not think of themselves as writers, trust the space and feel free to express themselves.

“There's something vulnerable and at its best sort of sacred about the interaction of asking people to trust a group of, in some cases, strangers, with not only their personal selves, but their artistic selves,” Mann describes.

“One of my main jobs as a teacher is trying to make other people feel welcome and supported in the act of sharing themselves and their work,” Mann says.

The role of vulnerability in creative nonfiction writing

A sense of vulnerability in writing nonfiction is not relegated to new students. Okupe speaks to the importance of vulnerability for nonfiction as a genre.

“I think vulnerability is an incredible pillar of faith and relationships,” Okupe says. “When we refuse to hide, we are most powerful, and I bring that into my writing.”

For Okupe, this vulnerability takes the form of mining experiences related to topics that people tend to shy away from. “When I write, I'm always trying to pull up things that I know that I would rather hide,” Okupe says. “Every single time I press into that pressure point, the results are so fruitful.”

Lucas Mann at Prairie Lights

Mann’s most recent work, Attachments, which was published this spring, chronicles his experiences of fatherhood, weaving his own personal accounts with cultural representations of it. “ Attachments is my fourth book. It's my first essay collection,” Mann says, “so in some ways, it feels like getting back to the kind of shorter form, experimental stuff that I was doing in graduate school.”

Okupe hopes to publish her writing one day and aspires to build an organization that supports and highlights nonfiction writing within the African continent.

“We have lots of programs that facilitate growth for poetry and for fiction,” Okupe says, “but nonfiction can get left behind because as a genre, it's in its infancy on the continent.”

“I want to build community around writing. Writing is not a solitary act.” Okupe says.

Both Okupe and Mann’s experiences, work, and aspirations underscore the far-reaching impact that the NWP has on present and future writers across the nation and globally.
