Understanding Assignments

What this handout is about.

The first step in any successful college writing venture is reading the assignment. While this sounds like a simple task, it can be a tough one. This handout will help you unravel your assignment and begin to craft an effective response. Much of the following advice will involve translating typical assignment terms and practices into meaningful clues to the type of writing your instructor expects. See our short video for more tips.

Basic beginnings

Regardless of the assignment, department, or instructor, adopting these two habits will serve you well :

  • Read the assignment carefully as soon as you receive it. Do not put this task off—reading the assignment at the beginning will save you time, stress, and problems later. An assignment can look pretty straightforward at first, particularly if the instructor has provided lots of information. That does not mean it will not take time and effort to complete; you may even have to learn a new skill to complete the assignment.
  • Ask the instructor about anything you do not understand. Do not hesitate to approach your instructor. Instructors would prefer to set you straight before you hand the paper in. That’s also when you will find their feedback most useful.

Assignment formats

Many assignments follow a basic format. Assignments often begin with an overview of the topic, include a central verb or verbs that describe the task, and offer some additional suggestions, questions, or prompts to get you started.

An Overview of Some Kind

The instructor might set the stage with some general discussion of the subject of the assignment, introduce the topic, or remind you of something pertinent that you have discussed in class. For example:

“Throughout history, gerbils have played a key role in politics,” or “In the last few weeks of class, we have focused on the evening wear of the housefly …”

The Task of the Assignment

Pay attention; this part tells you what to do when you write the paper. Look for the key verb or verbs in the sentence. Words like analyze, summarize, or compare direct you to think about your topic in a certain way. Also pay attention to words such as how, what, when, where, and why; these words guide your attention toward specific information. (See the section in this handout titled “Key Terms” for more information.)

“Analyze the effect that gerbils had on the Russian Revolution”, or “Suggest an interpretation of housefly undergarments that differs from Darwin’s.”

Additional Material to Think about

Here you will find some questions to use as springboards as you begin to think about the topic. Instructors usually include these questions as suggestions rather than requirements. Do not feel compelled to answer every question unless the instructor asks you to do so. Pay attention to the order of the questions. Sometimes they suggest the thinking process your instructor imagines you will need to follow to begin thinking about the topic.

“You may wish to consider the differing views held by Communist gerbils vs. Monarchist gerbils, or Can there be such a thing as ‘the housefly garment industry’ or is it just a home-based craft?”

These are the instructor’s comments about writing expectations:

“Be concise”, “Write effectively”, or “Argue furiously.”

Technical Details

These instructions usually indicate format rules or guidelines.

“Your paper must be typed in Palatino font on gray paper and must not exceed 600 pages. It is due on the anniversary of Mao Tse-tung’s death.”

The assignment’s parts may not appear in exactly this order, and each part may be very long or really short. Nonetheless, being aware of this standard pattern can help you understand what your instructor wants you to do.

Interpreting the assignment

Ask yourself a few basic questions as you read and jot down the answers on the assignment sheet:

Why did your instructor ask you to do this particular task?

Who is your audience.

  • What kind of evidence do you need to support your ideas?

What kind of writing style is acceptable?

  • What are the absolute rules of the paper?

Try to look at the question from the point of view of the instructor. Recognize that your instructor has a reason for giving you this assignment and for giving it to you at a particular point in the semester. In every assignment, the instructor has a challenge for you. This challenge could be anything from demonstrating an ability to think clearly to demonstrating an ability to use the library. See the assignment not as a vague suggestion of what to do but as an opportunity to show that you can handle the course material as directed. Paper assignments give you more than a topic to discuss—they ask you to do something with the topic. Keep reminding yourself of that. Be careful to avoid the other extreme as well: do not read more into the assignment than what is there.

Of course, your instructor has given you an assignment so that they will be able to assess your understanding of the course material and give you an appropriate grade. But there is more to it than that. Your instructor has tried to design a learning experience of some kind. Your instructor wants you to think about something in a particular way for a particular reason. If you read the course description at the beginning of your syllabus, review the assigned readings, and consider the assignment itself, you may begin to see the plan, purpose, or approach to the subject matter that your instructor has created for you. Given your instructor’s efforts, it helps to answer the question: What is my purpose in completing this assignment? Is it to gather research from a variety of outside sources and present a coherent picture? Is it to take material I have been learning in class and apply it to a new situation? Is it to prove a point one way or another? Key words from the assignment can help you figure this out. Look for key terms in the form of active verbs that tell you what to do.

Key Terms: Finding Those Active Verbs

Here are some common key words and definitions to help you think about assignment terms:

Information words Ask you to demonstrate what you know about the subject, such as who, what, when, where, how, and why.

  • define —give the subject’s meaning (according to someone or something). Sometimes you have to give more than one view on the subject’s meaning
  • describe —provide details about the subject by answering question words (such as who, what, when, where, how, and why); you might also give details related to the five senses (what you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell)
  • explain —give reasons why or examples of how something happened
  • illustrate —give descriptive examples of the subject and show how each is connected with the subject
  • summarize —briefly list the important ideas you learned about the subject
  • trace —outline how something has changed or developed from an earlier time to its current form
  • research —gather material from outside sources about the subject, often with the implication or requirement that you will analyze what you have found

Relation words Ask you to demonstrate how things are connected.

  • compare —show how two or more things are similar (and, sometimes, different)
  • contrast —show how two or more things are dissimilar
  • apply—use details that you’ve been given to demonstrate how an idea, theory, or concept works in a particular situation
  • cause —show how one event or series of events made something else happen
  • relate —show or describe the connections between things

Interpretation words Ask you to defend ideas of your own about the subject. Do not see these words as requesting opinion alone (unless the assignment specifically says so), but as requiring opinion that is supported by concrete evidence. Remember examples, principles, definitions, or concepts from class or research and use them in your interpretation.

  • assess —summarize your opinion of the subject and measure it against something
  • prove, justify —give reasons or examples to demonstrate how or why something is the truth
  • evaluate, respond —state your opinion of the subject as good, bad, or some combination of the two, with examples and reasons
  • support —give reasons or evidence for something you believe (be sure to state clearly what it is that you believe)
  • synthesize —put two or more things together that have not been put together in class or in your readings before; do not just summarize one and then the other and say that they are similar or different—you must provide a reason for putting them together that runs all the way through the paper
  • analyze —determine how individual parts create or relate to the whole, figure out how something works, what it might mean, or why it is important
  • argue —take a side and defend it with evidence against the other side

More Clues to Your Purpose As you read the assignment, think about what the teacher does in class:

  • What kinds of textbooks or coursepack did your instructor choose for the course—ones that provide background information, explain theories or perspectives, or argue a point of view?
  • In lecture, does your instructor ask your opinion, try to prove their point of view, or use keywords that show up again in the assignment?
  • What kinds of assignments are typical in this discipline? Social science classes often expect more research. Humanities classes thrive on interpretation and analysis.
  • How do the assignments, readings, and lectures work together in the course? Instructors spend time designing courses, sometimes even arguing with their peers about the most effective course materials. Figuring out the overall design to the course will help you understand what each assignment is meant to achieve.

Now, what about your reader? Most undergraduates think of their audience as the instructor. True, your instructor is a good person to keep in mind as you write. But for the purposes of a good paper, think of your audience as someone like your roommate: smart enough to understand a clear, logical argument, but not someone who already knows exactly what is going on in your particular paper. Remember, even if the instructor knows everything there is to know about your paper topic, they still have to read your paper and assess your understanding. In other words, teach the material to your reader.

Aiming a paper at your audience happens in two ways: you make decisions about the tone and the level of information you want to convey.

  • Tone means the “voice” of your paper. Should you be chatty, formal, or objective? Usually you will find some happy medium—you do not want to alienate your reader by sounding condescending or superior, but you do not want to, um, like, totally wig on the man, you know? Eschew ostentatious erudition: some students think the way to sound academic is to use big words. Be careful—you can sound ridiculous, especially if you use the wrong big words.
  • The level of information you use depends on who you think your audience is. If you imagine your audience as your instructor and they already know everything you have to say, you may find yourself leaving out key information that can cause your argument to be unconvincing and illogical. But you do not have to explain every single word or issue. If you are telling your roommate what happened on your favorite science fiction TV show last night, you do not say, “First a dark-haired white man of average height, wearing a suit and carrying a flashlight, walked into the room. Then a purple alien with fifteen arms and at least three eyes turned around. Then the man smiled slightly. In the background, you could hear a clock ticking. The room was fairly dark and had at least two windows that I saw.” You also do not say, “This guy found some aliens. The end.” Find some balance of useful details that support your main point.

The Grim Truth

With a few exceptions (including some lab and ethnography reports), you are probably being asked to make an argument. You must convince your audience. It is easy to forget this aim when you are researching and writing; as you become involved in your subject matter, you may become enmeshed in the details and focus on learning or simply telling the information you have found. You need to do more than just repeat what you have read. Your writing should have a point, and you should be able to say it in a sentence. Sometimes instructors call this sentence a “thesis” or a “claim.”

So, if your instructor tells you to write about some aspect of oral hygiene, you do not want to just list: “First, you brush your teeth with a soft brush and some peanut butter. Then, you floss with unwaxed, bologna-flavored string. Finally, gargle with bourbon.” Instead, you could say, “Of all the oral cleaning methods, sandblasting removes the most plaque. Therefore it should be recommended by the American Dental Association.” Or, “From an aesthetic perspective, moldy teeth can be quite charming. However, their joys are short-lived.”

Convincing the reader of your argument is the goal of academic writing. It doesn’t have to say “argument” anywhere in the assignment for you to need one. Look at the assignment and think about what kind of argument you could make about it instead of just seeing it as a checklist of information you have to present. What kind of evidence do you need?

There are many kinds of evidence, and what type of evidence will work for your assignment can depend on several factors–the discipline, the parameters of the assignment, and your instructor’s preference. Should you use statistics? Historical examples? Do you need to conduct your own experiment? Can you rely on personal experience? See our handout on evidence for suggestions on how to use evidence appropriately.

Make sure you are clear about this part of the assignment, because your use of evidence will be crucial in writing a successful paper. You are not just learning how to argue; you are learning how to argue with specific types of materials and ideas. Ask your instructor what counts as acceptable evidence. You can also ask a librarian for help. No matter what kind of evidence you use, be sure to cite it correctly—see the UNC Libraries citation tutorial .

You cannot always tell from the assignment just what sort of writing style your instructor expects. The instructor may be really laid back in class but still expect you to sound formal in writing. Or the instructor may be fairly formal in class and ask you to write a reflection paper where you need to use “I” and speak from your own experience.

Try to avoid false associations of a particular field with a style (“art historians like wacky creativity,” or “political scientists are boring and just give facts”) and look instead to the types of readings you have been given in class. No one expects you to write like Plato—just use the readings as a guide for what is standard or preferable to your instructor. When in doubt, ask your instructor about the level of formality they expect.

No matter what field you are writing for or what facts you are including, if you do not write so that your reader can understand your main idea, you have wasted your time. So make clarity your main goal. For specific help with style, see our handout on style .

Technical details about the assignment

The technical information you are given in an assignment always seems like the easy part. This section can actually give you lots of little hints about approaching the task. Find out if elements such as page length and citation format (see the UNC Libraries citation tutorial ) are negotiable. Some professors do not have strong preferences as long as you are consistent and fully answer the assignment. Some professors are very specific and will deduct big points for deviations.

Usually, the page length tells you something important: The instructor thinks the size of the paper is appropriate to the assignment’s parameters. In plain English, your instructor is telling you how many pages it should take for you to answer the question as fully as you are expected to. So if an assignment is two pages long, you cannot pad your paper with examples or reword your main idea several times. Hit your one point early, defend it with the clearest example, and finish quickly. If an assignment is ten pages long, you can be more complex in your main points and examples—and if you can only produce five pages for that assignment, you need to see someone for help—as soon as possible.

Tricks that don’t work

Your instructors are not fooled when you:

  • spend more time on the cover page than the essay —graphics, cool binders, and cute titles are no replacement for a well-written paper.
  • use huge fonts, wide margins, or extra spacing to pad the page length —these tricks are immediately obvious to the eye. Most instructors use the same word processor you do. They know what’s possible. Such tactics are especially damning when the instructor has a stack of 60 papers to grade and yours is the only one that low-flying airplane pilots could read.
  • use a paper from another class that covered “sort of similar” material . Again, the instructor has a particular task for you to fulfill in the assignment that usually relates to course material and lectures. Your other paper may not cover this material, and turning in the same paper for more than one course may constitute an Honor Code violation . Ask the instructor—it can’t hurt.
  • get all wacky and “creative” before you answer the question . Showing that you are able to think beyond the boundaries of a simple assignment can be good, but you must do what the assignment calls for first. Again, check with your instructor. A humorous tone can be refreshing for someone grading a stack of papers, but it will not get you a good grade if you have not fulfilled the task.

Critical reading of assignments leads to skills in other types of reading and writing. If you get good at figuring out what the real goals of assignments are, you are going to be better at understanding the goals of all of your classes and fields of study.

When you create an assignment, you can post it immediately, save a draft, or schedule it to post at a later date. After students complete and turn in their work, you can grade and return it to the students.

When you create an assignment, you can:

  • Select one or more classes

Select individual students

Add a grade category, add a grading period, change the point value, add a due date or time, add a topic, add attachments, add a rubric.

  • Turn on originality reports

Go to classroom.google.com  and click Sign In.

Sign in with your Google Account. For example,  [email protected] or [email protected] .  Learn more .

  • Enter the title and any instructions.

You can continue to edit and customize your assignment. Otherwise, if you’re ready, see below to post, schedule, or save your assignment .

Select additional classes

Assignments to multiple classes go to all students in those classes.

  • Create an assignment (details above).

Down Arrow

Unless you’re selecting multiple classes, you can select individual students. You can’t select more than 100 students at a time.

  • Click a student's name to select them.

Use grade categories to organize assignments. With grade categories, you and your students can see the category an assignment belongs to, such as Homework or Essays . Teachers also see the categories on the Grades page.

To organize assignments and grades into your school or district’s grading structure, create grading periods, such as quarters or semesters.

  • From the menu, select a grading period.

Tip: Before adding a grading period to an assignment, create a grading period for the class first. Learn how to create or edit grading periods .

You can change the point value of an assignment or make the assignment ungraded. By default, assignments are set at 100 points.

  • Under Points , click the value.
  • Enter a new point value or select Ungraded .

By default, an assignment has no due date. To set a due date:

Schedule the assignment to post later

Scheduled assignments might be delayed up to 5 minutes after the post time.

  • To schedule the same assignment across multiple classes, make sure to select all classes you want to include.
  • When you enter a time, Classroom defaults to PM unless you specify AM.
  • (Optional) Select a due date and topic for each class.
  • (Optional) To replicate your selected time and date for the first class into all subsequent classes, click Copy settings to all .
  • Click Schedule . The assignment will automatically post at the scheduled date and time.

After scheduling multiple assignments at once, you can still edit assignments later by clicking into each class and changing them individually.

Manage assignments

Edits affect individual classes. For multi-class assignments, make edits in each class.

Note : If you change an assignment's name, the assignment's Drive folder name isn't updated. Go to Drive and rename the folder.

You can only delete an assignment on the Classwork page.

If you delete an assignment, all grades and comments related to the assignment are deleted. However, any attachments or files created by you or the students are still available in Drive.

Assignment most often refers to one of two definitions in the financial world:

Assignment rights happen every day in many different situations. A payee, like a utility or a merchant, assigns the right to collect payment from a written check to a bank. A merchant can assign the funds from a line of credit to a manufacturing third party that makes a product that the merchant will eventually sell. Courts issue wage assignments for people late with child or spousal support, taxes, loans, or other obligations. Money is automatically subtracted from a worker's paycheck without consent if they have a history of nonpayment. For example, a person delinquent on $100 monthly loan payments has a wage assignment deducting the money from their paycheck and sent to the lender. Wage assignments are helpful in paying back long-term debts.

Another instance can be found in a mortgage assignment. This is where a mortgage deed gives a lender interest in a mortgaged property in return for payments received. Lenders often sell mortgages to third parties, such as other lenders. A mortgage assignment document clarifies the assignment of contract and instructs the borrower in making future mortgage payments, and potentially modifies the mortgage terms.

A final example involves a lease assignment. This benefits a relocating tenant wanting to end a lease early or a landlord looking for rent payments to pay creditors. Once the new tenant signs the lease, taking over responsibility for rent payments and other obligations, the previous tenant is released from those responsibilities. In a separate lease assignment, a landlord agrees to pay a creditor through an assignment of rent due under rental property leases. The agreement is used to pay a mortgage lender if the landlord defaults on the loan or files for bankruptcy . Any rental income would then be paid directly to the lender.

Options Assignment

Options can be assigned when a buyer decides to exercise their right to buy (or sell) stock at a particular strike price . The corresponding seller of the option is not determined when a buyer opens an option trade, but only at the time that an option holder decides to exercise their right to buy stock. So an option seller with open positions is matched with the exercising buyer via automated lottery. The randomly selected seller is then assigned to fulfill the buyer's rights. This is known as an option assignment.

Once assigned, the writer (seller) of the option will have the obligation to sell (if a call option ) or buy (if a put option ) the designated number of shares of stock at the agreed-upon price (the strike price). For instance, if the writer sold calls they would be obligated to sell the stock, and the process is often referred to as having the stock called away . For puts, the buyer of the option sells stock (puts stock shares) to the writer in the form of a short-sold position.

Suppose a trader owns 100 call options on company ABC's stock with a strike price of $10 per share. The stock is now trading at $30 and ABC is due to pay a dividend shortly. As a result, the trader exercises the options early and receives 10,000 shares of ABC paid at $10. At the same time, the other side of the long call (the short call) is assigned the contract and must deliver the shares to the long.

Create an assignment in Microsoft Teams

Create  assignments for your students in Microsoft Teams for Education . Manage assignment timelines, add instructions, create resources to turn in, and more.

Note:  Assignments is only available in class teams . You can assign assignments to classes of up to 1000 students. Classes larger than 300 can't use a Class Notebook or Makecode.

Navigate to the desired class team, then select Assignments .

Select Create >   New   Assignment .

At a minimum, you must give the assignment a title. This is required. You can optionally add a tag, which will make this assignment easier to search for in the future.

Assignments only supports the following image file types: .png, .jpeg, and .gif. 

On mobile, Images will resize to the screen. 

On desktop, you can use sizing handles on images to resize them.  

You can also attach existing files, links, or assignment integrations and create and name a new file right from here for students to turn in.

Note:  You can add up to five files for students to edit. The total number of resources you can add to an assignment is 10, whether editable or non-editable. Read-only reference files can be up to 500 MB in size. Files for students to edit can be up to 50 MB in size.

Select Attach  to attach resources to the assignment. Choose a file from your OneDrive, upload a file from your device, or choose one of the other options set by your admin, such as MakeCode.

Note:  If you're assigning a Class Notebook page, check what version of OneNote your students are using to ensure that their assignment pages will lock after the assignment due date passes.

Select +New  to create a blank Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), or Whiteboard document, or a new video recording to hand out to your students.

Select  Apps  to attach content from an app to the assignment. Admins can  manage Teams apps in the Microsoft Teams admin center .

Select Learning Accelerators  to add Reading Progress , Search Progress and other Learning Accelerators to the Assignment.

By default, Students can't edit  attached documents, meaning the document is read-only. This is a great option for reference materials.

Note:  If you have older documents with the file extension .doc, .xls, or .ppt, students won't be able to edit them. You can either attach them as read-only reference material or create a new file in Teams, copy in the old content, and save it. All new files you create in Teams or other Microsoft 365 apps will have the correct extension.

The Assign to field is where you choose the class for this assignment. By default, the class team you are in will be selected.

Multiclass Publish

Multiclass publish allows educators to create an assignment for multiple classes with the same due date. 

Do this by navigating to the Assign to field and check the boxes for classes the assignment will be published to.

Points and rubrics

You can select which grading scheme,  grading categories , and points the assignment is worth. 

If you have configured the class to use Grading Categories, you need to select a Grading Category for assignment with points.

Select the amount of points this assignment is worth, if any. You can use points on any number-based scale including whole numbers of 100 and set your own denominator. Examples:  88/100 or decimals 3.7/4.0.

Select  Add rubric  to  create a rubric .

Select  Manage grading categories  to create or edit the grading categories for the class.

Setting up Grading Schemes

Letter grading and grading categories must be set as a Grading Scheme in the Grade settings section to display these options.

2. Navigate down to Grade settings .

3. Choose Add Schemes or  Manage schemes .

Note:  If no other grading schemes other than "Points" have been set, this link will read  Add Schemes . Once you have gone through the steps to add a new scheme, the link will change to  Manage schemes.

5. Set the grading levels. Letter grades will be the normal A, B, C, D, F, scheme. Ensure that there are enough levels to cover the entire 0-100 percent range.

6. Select the Save button when complete. 

Finish by choosing the  Done  button.

Choose multiple classes, individual students, or groups of students  in one class to assign to.

By default, only students who are in your class now will receive this assignment. Change this by selecting an option from the dropdown menu.

Note:  If you choose a close date, any student who joins will receive this assignment until the close date.

Select a time and date for the assignment to be due. To schedule an assignment, next to  Assignment will post immediately with late turn-ins allowed  select Edit assignment timeline . Here, you can customize when your assignment will be posted to students and when it will close for turn-ins. By default, no close date will be selected, which allows students to turn in assignments late.

Note: If you choose multiple classes to publish the assignment to, you can select Set due date per class to set individual schedule , due and close date for each class

You can choose whether to add this assignment to your calendar on Outlook, students' calendars, and other educators or staff in your class team. Set this preference for all assignments in Assignments Settings .

Next to Add assignment to calendars , select the dropdown and pick one of the following options:

Students only  adds the assignment to just student calendars.

Students and me adds the assignment to both student calendars and your calendar.

Students and team owners to adds the assignment to both student and other educators or staff in the class team calendars.

Choose the channel where you'd like notifications for this assignment to post. This allows you to keep student work and discussion organized by unit, topic, or subject. By default, assignments will be posted in the General channel or your selection in Assignments Settings.

To choose a channel to post in, next to Post assignment notifications to:  select the down arrow for a list of available channels. 

Pick the channel you’d like this assignment notification to post in, your selection will be applied immediately.

To post assignment notifications to a channel, make sure bot posting is enabled. You can check that here  or ask your IT Admin for help.

Assignments will post to channels that are visible to all students. Private channels will not appear during this step.

If you have selected multiple classes, select Set per Class to set which channel to use or just use the General channel. Assignments to individual students do not post to channels.

When you're ready, you can finish the process of creating your new assignment by assigning it to students.

Note:  If your school uses Turnitin, you can sync assignment turn-ins to Turnitin .

Assign  will immediately publish the assignment and your students will be notified of the new assignment on the day you specified and the notification linking to this assignment will post in the channel you selected. They'll also have an entry on their Teams and Outlooks calendars if you've selected that option.

Save  will save a draft of the assignment. Students will not receive any notification, and nothing will be added to any calendar. 

Discard  will delete the draft of the assignment. Students will not receive any notification, and nothing will be added to any calendar.

1. Navigate to the desired Class Team, then select Classwork.

2. Select Add module.

Tigers Designate Gio Urshela, Easton Lucas For Assignment

The Tigers announced today that they have selected the contracts of infielders Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney , moves that were reported yesterday . In corresponding moves, outfielder Akil Baddoo was optioned to Triple-A Toledo and infielder Gio Urshela was designated for assignment. To open another 40-man spot, left-hander Easton Lucas was designated for assignment. Robert Murray of FanSided reported the Urshela move on X prior to the official announcement.

Urshela, 32, reached free agency for the first time after the 2023 season. He had a solid four-year run in the big leagues from 2019 to 2022 but then had an injury-marred 2023 campaign. He got into 62 games with the Angels, hitting just two home runs before a pelvic fracture wiped out the second half of his season.

That was naturally going to impact his individual market but he also had the misfortune of being a part of one of the frostier offseasons in recent memory. Even big-name free agents lingered on the open market well into the new year. Many players below the superstar level ended up settling for very modest deals in the early parts of 2024. Guys like Michael A. Taylor , Enrique Hernández , Adam Duvall , Randal Grichuk and others settled for one-year deals of less than $5MM.

The Tigers were able to nab Urshela for a guarantee of just $1.5MM on a one-year deal. Though his 2023 season wasn’t great, they were likely excited to get a solid veteran at such a low price point. As mentioned, Urshela had a strong four-year run prior to 2023, spending time with the Yankees and Twins. In that stretch, he hit 54 home runs in 435 games and slashed .290/.336/.463 for a wRC+ of 118.

He spent most of that time at third base and generally had the reputation of a strong defender. Bizarrely, Outs Above Average hates him and gave him a grade of -17 in that 2019-22 period, but Defensive Runs Saved gave him a solid grade of +5.

If the Tigers got anything close to that kind of performance for their modest investment, it would have been a steal. Unfortunately, Urshela has not been able to bounce back as hoped. He has been in 92 games for Detroit this year with five home runs and a modest batting line of .243/.286/.333. That translates to a 73 wRC+, indicating he’s been 27% below league average at the plate this year.

Detroit is 7.5 games back of a playoff spot, which isn’t a totally hopeless position, but they are clearly focused on the future at this point. Prior to the deadline, they traded away Jack Flaherty , Carson Kelly , Andrew Chafin and Mark Canha . They are going to use the remainder of the schedule to get Jung and Sweeney exposed to major league pitching, which will nudge Urshela out of their plans.

Since the trade deadline has come and gone, they will have no choice but to place Urshela on waivers in the coming days. He has about $345K of his salary still to be paid out, meaning a claiming team wouldn’t be taking on huge amounts of money by grabbing him. However, given his performance both last year and this year, it’s possible that he passes through unclaimed. He has been hot of late, with a .265/.342/.412 batting line and 108 wRC+ in August, but that’s a sample of just 38 plate appearances amid a rough two-year stretch.

If he passes through unclaimed, he has more than enough service time to reject an outright assignment while keeping that salary in place. If he ends up a free agent, the Tigers would be on the hook for that money. Any other club could sign him for the prorated league minimum, which would be subtracted from what the Tigers pay.

Lucas, 27, was just claimed off waivers from the Athletics in May. Since that claim, he has made three appearances for the Tigers with two earned runs allowed, two strikeouts and two walks. Combined with his time with the A’s, he now has 13 2/3 major league innings pitched with a 9.22 earned run average.

His minor league work this year has been far more interesting. Between the two organizations, he has thrown 49 Triple-A innings with a 3.31 ERA. The 11.2% walk rate is on the high side but he’s countered that with a 25.2% strikeout rate.

Lucas still has a full slate of options and less than a year of service time. For any club intrigued by his Triple-A numbers this year, he could be a long-term depth piece. Like Urshela, he will have to be placed on waivers in the coming days since the trade deadline has passed. Lucas has a previous career outright, which would give him the right to elect free agency if he eventually passes through waivers unclaimed.

He’s hit .203/.263/.290 (good for a 50 wRC+) since the ASB and he’s not exactly bringing stellar defense to the hot corner either.

He’s now hit .267/.304/.350 with 7 HRs in 553 PAs the last two years. The AVG isn’t horrible, but that’s really more from hitting .299 last year than anything.

Best days are definitely behind him at this point. He’ll be 33 this offseason and I’d be surprised if he gets a major league deal from any clubs. Sure, some ST invites and MiLB depth offers, but there’s not much hope for upside left at this stage of his career.

DFA’ing Urshela frees up spots on the 26-man and 40-man rosters. Easton Lucas only frees up a 40-man spot. Somebody must be going on the IL???

Pretty much as most here suspected, Giovani had no future in Detroit and was paid peanuts for a .273 lifetime hitter. Baddoo can now go crash into other OFers back in in Toledo. I’d imagine Jung will be a 3B and Sweeny at SS, sitting down Baez at the moment he may have figured out how to hit again…I’d DH him to find out.. This is more of a service time move by Pee Wee with 44 games left, one short of the minimum to keep both seen as rookies in ’25. No problem, baseball is a business. Pity they have to face Gerrit Cole in their debuts but hey, he won’t go nine innings.

Keep in mind that by having Jung & Sweeney maintain their rookie status’ for 2025 this helps the Tigers since if either of them win the ROY, they get an extra draft pick at the end of the first round in 2026. Not a bad strategy

Well, there’s something to be said for throwing a kid off the end of the dock, but not if there’s a hammerhead shark circling around. One thing in their favor is there is really no book on them for Cole to study. He is mostly a location guy so they might get to him early before he figures them out.

Interesting. I thought it would be McKinstry. Bligh Madris has surprised some at 1st base with a little power. He’s the 1stBaseman now. Urshela was the other 1B option. Who will be the other 1B option now? Vierling? Keith? Is Tork about to come back? Does McKinstry play 1st? Honestly, thought Urshela’s bat was better than McKinstry’s, but Gio is RH’d and Zach is a lefty.

Tigers have a slew of LH’d hitters. Will also be interesting to see what they do when Greene and Perez come back.

Perez is out for the season it sounds like. IF he comes back it would be for last week of the season. Kinda surprised they didn’t move him to the 60 day with that in mind.

Yep, Gio and Canha were the 1B with Tork in Toledo. If Spencer has a good weekend with his pal Riley, both may return because the Tigers need a RH hitter not named Baez or Rogers/Dingler in the lineup. Not sure Tork wants to come back but he’d be called up in Sept. regardless so why not do it now?.

1B gig is Madris for the rest of the year. Tork has yet to show what they need to see for them to bring him back up–they need him to be able to battle against MLB pitching and he’s still unbelievably late against MLB-level fastballs. His HRs in AAA have largely been against change ups and offspeed stuff, and his approach has still been woeful with 2 strikes and situationally.

Tork simply doesn’t seem willing to make the adjustments needed or listen to the coaching staffs. He seems intent to do it his way until the end. It’s a shame.

You don’t hut 31 HR in a season by accident. The talent and natural strength is there. But there’s 0 doubt that without changes to his swing/stance, with better balance and use of his legs, that it will only get worse as time goes on. You can only hit for power with your upper body for so long.

It seems so obvious that Keith at 1B, Jung at 2B and McGonigle/Sweeney/Rainier/whoever on the left is your IF of the future.

Doesn’t seem obvious to me. Keith is holding his own at 2B. Let him learn and get better. Let Jung play 3B. Do the Tigers have to move every player thru every position? Flexibility is nice, but not needed by everyone.

Saw Sweeney debut last night. Big kid, as is Keith. Will be watching to see how Sweeney handles SS. Jung at 3rd too. I though Urshela was decent at 3rd but he actually was a – runs saved guy over there. A major league team absolutely needs good defense on the left side of the infield. Tigers have some work to do.

Tigers must be ok with Captain Bligh holding down 1B for the rest of the season to let Urshela go.

Cruising around various baseball sites, the buzz is that Jung is going to be planted at 3B unless he starts butchering it. The swap moving Keith to 3B could come sooner than later if you have a pitcher’s revolt. And Jung has played some 2B in Toledo to keep him aware of being there. With McGonigle and Lee and a few others, it seems 2B will eventually become a hot prize. Keith impresses me as a guy who can play anywhere other than SS. Only Colt and his trainer know if his arm can still handle 3B. Since Tork would obviously be happier someplace else, Colt could end up there too. Just a reminder, Sweeny looks like a keeper on the tape I’ve watched,,,…he really caught fire with the Hens, frozen ropes to all fields…impressive.

I wonder if they will use some of the 2B surplus in the minors as trade bait at some point. Anderson is a 2B as well and looks like he might develop into a decent hitter.

Yep, Anderson too….I suppose that’s Pee Wee’s intention to use a couple of these guys as trade bait…or he is obsessed with 2Bmen for some reason…..he is from San Francisco. If I remember, Anderson was the sandwich pick between Clark and Mac…quite a trio before Mac got his hand broke.. I’m interested in how Riley’s time in Toledo is affecting Tork and if their friendship is still strong. Tork must be one the loneliest guys in the world seeing everybody around him heading back to Detroit and him stuck in Toledo….Toledo!

Even if they don’t see Tork as the future at 1B and plan to ship him out I think they need to play him to build up his trade value. If they do see him as part of the future then he should still be getting MLB at bats. I hope he figures his swing out…30 HR and 90 RBI would be a nice add for the team next year. Maybe he’ll be a September callup?

Respect to the Tigers for a reasonable bargain-hunting play. Respect to Urshela who seemed to make a positive impression on fans, other players, the organization. And respect to the Tigers for wanting to turn the last 1 1/2 months into a tryout period for guys like Jung and Sweeney.

I hope Urshela catches on elsewhere and next year turns out to be the comeback year the Tigers were hoping for in ’24.

Sweeny was smooth at SS last night and got a knock off Cole. Jung looks like a tough customer…..the good ones all have that cold stare when it gets down to brass tacks and ear wax. Meanwhile Navigato hit two more dingers last night….neither Riley or Tork were in the lineup on a Friday night…curious. Hinch already has Sweeny moving to 3B next week…..Jung will probably be in RF….throw the dart at the board, AJ Genius.

I don’t see Jung in the OF. I could see Keith at 1B and Jung at 2B though. I think the Tigers really want a bat at 3B. Jung is giving every chance to be that guy. If any moves occur, I bet it won’t be til next year.

Its unfortunate because he’s the best 3B in Detroit and It just demonstrates the Tigers’ poor front office management.

McKinstry may be versatile; who cares? He’s not special at any position and even worse than Baez offensively.

Padres starting pitcher Yu Darvish effectively vanished from the major leagues after the franchise placed him on the restricted list in July. Padres manager Mike Shildt relayed the reason behind Darvish’s absence as an undisclosed family matter .

There is not a confirmed date for Darvish’s return to San Diego’s rotation. Two people close to Darvish revealed their predictions regarding when the Japanese right-hander will come back to baseball to the New York Post . One person said there is a “50-50” chance that Darvish will be back this season while the second person said the odds of him returning this season are higher. 

Despite being away from the Padres franchise, Darvish has been reported to be working out.

His hiatus from baseball came shortly after Darvish was sent on rehab assignment to the Fort Wayne TinCaps for a left groin strain in the beginning of June. The 2020 All-MLB First-Team selection last pitched on May 29 for three innings in the Padres' loss against the Marlins. 

The 2023 season was one of the worst in Darvish’s career. He posted the second-highest ERA of his career (4.56) and the highest since 2021. However, Darvish was beginning to look like his old self, logging a 3.20 ERA in 11 starts this season. Throwing 53 strikeouts and only 15 walks across 56.1 innings, Darvish was expected to be a key contributor as the Padres seek a spot in the playoffs. 

On a more positive note, Darvish’s break will also allow him to recover from injuries he sustained earlier this season. 

San Diego’s rotation is highlighted by three pitchers — Michael King (3.19), Dylan Cease (3.41), and Matt Waldron (4.00) — who have ERAs among the top 20 National League pitchers. The trio also ranks in the top 11 for least amount of hits allowed. The author of the Padres’ second no-hitter in history , Dylan Cease, sits in third in the National League for allowing only 99 hits. 

If Darvish can make his way back to the mound for the Padres this season, the five-time All-Star will certainly boost an already dominating rotation. Since returning from the All-Star break, the Padres have nearly guaranteed their spot in the playoffs as one of the three National League Wild Card teams.

In their last 22 games, the Padres are 19-3 — a team-record streak that makes the Padres a virtual lock for a playoff spot .

Angels designate Luis Guillorme, Willie Calhoun for assignment

Long eliminated from playoff consideration, the Los Angeles Angels on Friday designated two players for assignment: infielder Luis Guillorme and designated hitter Willie Calhoun .

To take their spots on the active roster, the Angels recalled infielders Niko Kavadas and Jack Lopez.

Kavadas, 25, was inserted into the starting lineup for Friday's home game against the Atlanta Braves . He batted cleanup as the designated hitter for his major league debut.

Kavadas was acquired from the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline, along with three other minor leaguers, for right-handed reliever Luis Garcia .

In 94 combined games for Triple-A Worcester and Salt Lake, Kavadas was batting .264 with 19 home runs and 67 RBIs. He had 64 games at first base and 30 at DH.

Lopez, 31, played seven games with the Red Sox in 2021. He was batting .274 with 12 home runs and 57 RBIs at Salt Lake. He has split time at three infield positions and all three outfield positions.

Guillorme, 29, batted .218 with seven doubles and six RBIs in 59 combined games for the Angels and Braves this season. He was acquired by the Angels in a May trade for a player to be named later.

Calhoun, 29, batted .245 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in 68 games. He is a career .241 hitter with 42 home runs and 140 RBIs in 369 games over eight major league seasons with four different clubs, including six with the Texas Rangers ,

BALTIMORE (AP) — Masataka Yoshida homered and had four RBIs and the Boston Red Sox pounded All-Star Corbin Burnes before holding on to beat the Baltimore Orioles 12-10 on Friday night.

Burnes (12-5) gave up eight runs and 10 hits — both career highs — in four innings. It was a performance unbefitting the AL starter last month in the All-Star game and the 2021 Cy Young Award winner.

Burnes yielded two home runs, walked three and threw two wild pitches on a hot, humid night. His ERA jumped from 2.71 to 3.10, the highest it’s been all season.

“Probably he was off a little bit,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “Just one of those nights. It wasn’t a good one for him, but he grinded with us. He’s a great pitcher, probably one of the top five in the league.”

Ramón Urías went 3 for 3 with a homer and five RBIs for the Orioles, who fell a game behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East. Rookie Jackson Holliday had his first four-hit game and scored three runs.

“Our offense kept fighting, but we came up short,” Holliday said. “But it’s pretty special to get four hits.”

Despite getting 17 hits and cutting a five-run deficit to 12-10, Baltimore stranded 12 runners and never led after the fourth inning.

Rafael Devers doubled in a run in the first inning and hit a two-run drive in the third for a 4-1 lead. After the Orioles pulled even in the bottom half, Yoshida capped the fourth with a three-run shot that made it 8-4.

“Just a smart hitter,” Cora said about Yoshida. “He’s in a good place physically and he’s putting good swings on the ball.”

It was 8-6 before the Red Sox tacked on three runs in the seventh against Craig Kimbrel, who’s trying to regain his job as Baltimore’s closer. This game didn’t help that effort, as he was booed lustily by the home crowd after giving up a two-run homer to David Hamilton and a solo blast by Jarren Duran.

Cooper Criswell (5-4) got the win despite allowing six runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings. He was the third of eight Boston pitchers, with starter Brennan Bernadino getting only two outs before manager Alex Cora tapped deep into his bullpen.

Kenley Jansen worked the ninth to earn his 23rd save and seal Boston’s second win in eight games against Baltimore this season.

Red Sox: Boston activated 1B Triston Casas (rib strain) off the 60-day DL, hoping his return will provide some punch to the lineup. “Hitting the ball out of the ballpark is important. That’s what he brings to the equation,” Cora said of Casas, who had six homers in 78 ABs before going on the IL on April 21. … Boston also reinstated RH Cooper Criswell from the Covid-19 IL, optioned RH Chase Shugart to Triple-A Worcester and designated 1B/DH Dominic Smith (.237, 6 HRs, 34 RBIs in 83 games) for assignment. … The Red Sox expect OF Tyler O’Neil (leg infection) back on Saturday, Cora said.

Orioles: C Adley Rutschman was scratched minutes before the game because of lower back discomfort.

Baltimore was poised to recall rookie Cade Povich (1-5, 6.27 ERA) from Triple-A Norfolk to start Saturday, a move manager Brandon Hyde said is designed to give 34-year-old Albert Suárez an extra day of rest after he pitched a season-high 6 2/3 innings Sunday. Brayan Bello (10-5, 4.97) was set to start for Boston.

Red Sox to designate fan favorite first baseman for assignment

The Boston Red Sox  are set to take on the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night at Camden Yards, but before they announce their lineup, a roster move has been reported.

According to MLB Insider Robert Murray, the Red Sox are designating first baseman Dom Smith for assignment.

Smith, 29, signed with Boston back in May to split first base opportunities with Garrett Cooper when Triston Casas went down with torn cartilage in his ribs. While Smith started out slow, he eventually won the job and finished pretty well, hitting .237 with a .706 OPS, six home runs and 34 RBIs in 83 games. His immediate connection to the fan base was palpable and something he talked about frequently. 

With Casas expected to return on Friday , this move isn't a huge surprise, but some believed he had done enough to keep his spot on the roster.
