The previous year, I worked as a farm hand at a pig and poultry farm for the summer where I was in charge of caring for the animals and gained an understanding of the maintenance of free-range and battery hens.

Biology and chemistry were two subjects I studied at college that gave me a lot of satisfaction. Scientists have continually demonstrated their ingenuity in unlocking the secrets of how living organisms function. Within animals, there is a beauty inherent in their processes that complements their external aesthetic. Studying science has also given me a solid understanding of the principles of scientific investigation and the central concepts underlying these subjects. Zoology personal statement example 1.

I am applying to study Zoology because of my enthusiasm for the environment and my fascination for living organisms. I am particularly interested in physiology and animal behaviour, as well as ecology and biodiversity which I have studied at A level, and would welcome the opportunity of acquiring further knowledge on biological aspects with a focus on animals.

I am currently hoping for a work experience placement at the Cotswold Wildlife Park or with the Oxford Preservation Trust, and intend to travel abroad on a wildlife conservation project. Eventually I hope to pursue a career in an organisation such as Bom Free Foundation, WWFN, or to carry out research of my own on animals in their natural habitat. My genuine interest in Zoology has been broadened by popular literature by Steven Jay Gould such as 'Hen's teeth and Horse's Toes'; this proved exciting and explanatory. I have visited. Science and Natural History museums, and television nature documentaries alongside Geography and Biology lessons help me appreciate the pressures on wildlife today.

My A level subjects support my interest in the overlap between real-life studies, scientific theory and the 'wider economic and social context as explored in General Studies. I lived in Portugal until recently and am bilingual in English and Portuguese. I find studying French very useful for travel. I have been on both Biology and Geography residential courses in which I leant valuable fieldwork techniques and practised working individually as well as with others.

Outside school I have a part-time job at WHSmith as a Sales Assistant and I help at the Bradmore nursery in north Oxford for Millennium Volunteers, which complements my babysitting skills. I have also made collections for charity, namely for the 'Leprosy Relief Association' and 'The Red Cross'.

I found my work experience at the Oxford University Department of Experimental Psychology in February 2000 very stimulating and I continue to take part in current research studies at the department as part of the control group As a result of these commitments I have become more ambitious, determined, and responsible and have a better understanding of the world of work.

I enjoy reading novels, spending time with friends and dancing. I attend the Royal Academy of Dancing Ballet school and I am working towards my grade 8.

I have taken part in Ballet shows, a Fashion show for Young Enterprise and more recently was a member of the backstage crew for the school production. I have an interest in sport, I have been mountain climbing, scuba diving and snorkelling and take pleasure in swimming, cycling and ice- skating. I'm very much looking forward to the work and the social side at University, meeting new people and extending my studies to a field that fascinates me.

I like how so many of these comments judging this essay are misspelling simple words, like: sentence ("sentance"), universities ("universitys"), learned ("learnt"), regards ("reagrds") and anywhere ("any where")... and use of the word "there" rather than "their".. The only person who left a comment worth anything is the one who called you all a bunch of idiots.

I think since this person has taken part in some valuable work placements and work experience, they are probably selling themself short a little. It is certainly not a bad personal statement, just a little generic (I'm sure everyone applying for zoology is enthusiastic about animals etc) and you'd need to elaborate to really make yourself stand out. That said, people who have all the extra experience might not need to rely on their personal statement as much as others.

Zoology Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by animals and the natural world. Throughout my childhood we had a variety of pets ranging from the usual cats and dogs to the more unusual quails and African snails. It was this early introduction to the amazing species found in the animal kingdom that inspired me to want to study Zoology in later life.

As I grew older I became more interested in the biological aspects of different species and how they ‘work’. With this in mind I worked hard to achieve good grades in Biology at school and spent many hours independently researching animals and how they functioned at a biological level.

As well as Biology I also excelled in the other science-based subjects and enjoyed Geography, Mathematics, and Modern Foreign Languages, in particular Spanish.

During my final years at secondary school and throughout college I held a weekend and holiday position as a groom for one of the top stud farm and livery yards in the country. This was a highly responsible position and I was often left in sole charge of the owner’s valuable stallions and other livestock.

This role taught me a lot about the characteristics and behaviour patterns of horses and how they interact both with each other and with humans and other species. I was involved in all practical tasks and was able to gain a better understanding of how artificial insemination works and the science behind it.

Outside of school and work I enjoy an active lifestyle and regularly compete my own horses, mostly at county level, although I have also competed at national show jumping competitions. I am also a volunteer puppy walker for my local Dogs for the Disabled group which involves fostering the puppies during their training and attending training and socialisation classes with them, as well as the managing their daily care.

I hope that by studying Zoology I will further develop my skills and knowledge of animals and this will enable me to gain a position working with animals, possibly at a zoo.

As far back as I can remember, I have been surrounded by animals. Whilst, as with most young children, their presence was initially a simple source of joy, as I have gotten older, I have become increasingly interested in – to put it simply – ‘how they work’. That is, I am fascinated by their internal structures and processes, and how these relate to their behaviour. Moreover, I am interested in how their specific characteristics – whether behavioural or physical – are related to their genetic composition, and how this has been shaped over the course of evolution. Furthermore, I am intrigued by the way in which people organise animals within our societies, and the impact that this has on the wider environment. It is because of this passion for animals that I wish to study them at university, and why I have endeavoured always to be around them.

In regard to this pursuit, I have undertaken several work placements that have involved working directly with animals and those that care for them. Whilst, of course, it was a pleasure to be involved in such work, I also gained a greater appreciation of what working with animals can involve. For instance, I spent a week volunteering with a veterinary group. Whilst there, I was able to assist in a variety of practical tasks, including preparing the operating table, holding animals during injections, and recording their weight. Additionally, I had the chance to speak to the staff, who, on one hand, emphasised to me the potential difficulties associated with working with animals, such as observing them in pain. On the other, however, I gained a sense of how rewarding it must be to have an advanced understanding of them and how this might be used to ensure their health.

Throughout 2011 I held a weekend job at a stud and livery yard. Whilst this largely entailed handling and grooming horses, I was also able to learn about the science behind artificial inseminations. During the previous year, I worked as a farm hand at a pig and poultry farm throughout the summer. Here, I was responsible for making sure that all the animals were looked after. Additionally, I developed an understanding of the maintenance of both free-range and battery hens.

In my spare time, I do a lot of work with horses. For example, I ride with the British Show Jumping Association, competing at both local and international events. I am also an elected Pony Club Team Leader, taking responsibility for young riders and their ponies. For this role, I have had to develop excellent time-management skills to ensure that ponies are prepared in time for their riders. Additionally, I initiated the development of a riding team for my school. This required that I recruit individuals and organise events to enable us to practise and compete. As a consequence, I have been able to develop my organisational skills and ability to work within a team, all the while working towards something that I greatly enjoy.

Having studied both biology and chemistry at college, I am aware that science is something that gives me a lot of satisfaction. I am continually impressed by the ingenious ways in which scientists have been able to unlock the secrets of how living organisms function. There is a beauty inherent in the processes that occur within animals that complements their external aesthetic. Moreover, studying science has, of course, given me a solid foundation of the principles of scientific investigation and of the central concepts upon which these subjects are based. From a very early age, I have been fascinated by the astounding diversity of life on our planet. It is this lifelong interest that drives my enthusiasm for zoology and my desire to delve into the intricate mechanics that govern the world’s various ecosystems. I am drawn to the BSc Zoology degree because it possesses the rigor and depth that would enable me to deepen my understanding and contribute significantly to the field.

Being exposed to the awe-inspiring world of zoology for the first time in my A-level studies ignited a deep passion within me. The way organisms interact with their environment , how they adapt and evolve over time, the preservation of endangered species and the balance life maintains within ecosystems; these are all complex processes that have sparked a curiosity in me that I am eager to explore through this course.

My previous academic experience is directly related to this course. In high school, I took part in a research project investigating the impact of climate change on bird migration patterns. This experience ingrained in me the significance of research, the importance of data analysis and the fundamental role of deductive reasoning in scientific exploration.

Further that, I participated in an internship at a nearby wildlife reserve during my gap year. This was not only an intensive, hands-on experience, but it also provided me with a profound insight into various exotic species’ behavior and conservation needs. I witnessed the adverse effects of deforestation, climate change, and poaching, which strengthened my resolve to combat these issues. I fervently believe that with the comprehensive knowledge provided by this degree, I can contribute to wildlife preservation efforts in a more impactful way.

My life experiences have also shaped my passion for Zoology. Growing up on a farm exposed me to a diverse array of animals and their distinct behaviors from a very young age. This early exposure fostered my curiosity about animal behavior and the complex relationships between animals and their environment.

Apart from academic and work-related experiences, I have consistently participated in debates and quiz competitions, the highlight being a victory in a National level biology quiz competition. I take pride in my critical thinking and analytical abilities, which are crucial in research and wildlife conservation efforts.

The skills I bring to this course include observational capability, an aptitude for data analysis, an eagerness for fieldwork, and a keen interest in animal behavior. Moreover, I believe that my communication skills, honed through various public speaking events, will help me to mobilize change and make a significant impact in the field of zoology.

In terms of my future plans, I aspire to become a wildlife conservationist. I envision myself working with various international organizations devoted to wildlife preservation, contributing towards creating sustainable ecosystems, and raising global awareness about the importance of biodiversity.
