Think about it this way…thanks to the scholarship you just received, you will be in (slightly) less debt after you finish school.

Let’s start with Do’s:

• Do begin with some healthy brainstorming: Think about what you want to write about. What your acceptance speech is going to turn out like. Are you going to write a bit about yourself and the opportunities that you went through? How are you going to address your speech?
• Do start by writing a draft: this way, you are able to write down your ideas and rearrange them in a way that is convenient for you. Writing drafts first before writing the final output is often taken for granted. But this is one way of helping you manage your thoughts better.
• Do watch your tone: Even when you are writing your speech, watch the tone of your writing. Do not sound too embarrassed or overconfident. Do not sound boring as well. Keep it light and professional if you are unsure as to how to approach your writing tone.
• Do keep an eye on your spelling and grammar: When in doubt, check and recheck your work. Your spelling and grammar should be on point. Just to be on the safe side, always be careful with your spelling. Do not be afraid to ask help for this as well.
• Do revise your work: You may have forgotten to add something. Also, revising your work is just as important as the rest of the tips.

Every four years, Americans are treated to oratory by speakers of both parties who address their national party conventions. The purpose of such oratory is less to persuade than to fire up the attendees who will sally forth from their respective conventions determined to mobilize forces for their candidates up and down the ballot.

Some of the speeches are downright scary, while others are joyous and uplifting. Regardless, the focus on so many speeches in such a condensed period of time emphasizes the power of the spoken word.

As a former speechwriter turned executive coach, I have helped many women and men hone their messages. I want to share a few things I have learned, mainly through trial and error.

Know Your Audience

People want to hear what you say, but you need to do your homework before you can connect. Understand what the audience expects of you and tailor your remarks to resonate with their needs.

Many times, what a leader has to say is what they must say. That is, the situation is challenging and presents problems. A leader can only accomplish so much. Failure to acknowledge what you can do and what the organization must do is asking for trouble. People will simply tune out.

Address Objections

Everyone wants to give an uplifting speech that resonates with harmony and joy. Unfortunately, life is not like that. Leaders need to paint a realistic picture, citing the pluses and minuses. What the leader must do may conflict with what the organization wants to do. It is the leader's responsibility to be honest about the decisions and set the course forward.

Tell Stories

Reveal yourself through stories. Cite examples of individuals in organizations who are making positive contributions. No leader succeeds alone. Every leader needs the team's buy-in. So, make that clear.

Issue The Call To Action

Not every speech may need a formal call to action, but every public utterance needs to be understood as a call for unity, a coming together to achieve the mission. However, if there is a call to action, learn from the politicians—ask for their support. Simultaneously, include your commitment to supporting the individuals and teams that make up the organization.

Uplift Your Audience

Knowing, acknowledging, addressing and challenging are just the basics of speechmaking. Each speaker must craft a message that reveals who they are and what they want to accomplish. Give people a reason to believe in you because you believe in them.

One thing I have yet to emphasize in this little essay is delivery. So let me quote the legendary film director, John Ford , who famously said “You can speak well if your tongue can deliver the message of your heart.” In short, relax. If you have a good message, speak directly. Show people how you feel with the words you deliver. Doing so will encourage listeners to have faith in you and your leadership.

So often, it is said that a leader's job is to elevate followers and enable them to do their best. If that is the case, a good speech—well-honed or off-the-cuff remarks—is an excellent way to begin the uplifting process.

In a competitive job market, every detail counts. While a thank-you email may seem like an insignificant step at the end of the interview process , a well-written one can set you apart from the competition and underscore your interest in the position.

Here is a guide to writing a professional thank-you email that will leave a lasting impression on your potential employer.

Why Should You Send a Thank-You Interview Email?

— It shows that you are polite. Sending a thank-you email after an interview demonstrates your thoughtfulness, engagement and good manners. In short, it makes you a likable interviewee .

— It demonstrates interest. Following up your interview with a thank-you note helps you stand out among applicants and communicates your genuine interest in the company. Certified career and resume strategist Victoria Morneau recommends sending a thank-you note even if you’ve been rejected for the job, as circumstances can change and you might be considered for future opportunities. “Back when I interviewed for my first real job upon graduating post-secondary, I was told I was the only candidate to send a thank-you note. Needless to say, I was hired,” she says.

When Should You Send a Thank-You Email?

To ensure that the person receives your thank-you email while the interview is still fresh in their memory, Morneau says it’s best to send it within 24 hours of the interview and during typical office hours.

A good rule of thumb is to send a thank-you interview email to everyone you interacted with during the hiring process. This means not just the interviewer from the first round but also those who participated in subsequent rounds — even if you’ve already met and thanked them before.

If you haven’t heard back about the position after a week, it may be appropriate to check in on the hiring process , Morneau says. Beyond that, she advises refraining from further follow-ups.

What to Include in a Thank-You for the Interview Email

Here are five elements to include in your thank-you emails:

— Conversation reminder. Include “one key learning, a memorable takeaway or a reminder of why you’re excited about the role,” says Joseph Liu, career change consultant and host of the “Career Relaunch” podcast. By mentioning specific points from the interview, he says, you’ll demonstrate your engagement and attentiveness.

— Your gratitude. In a few sentences, thank the interviewer for their time and for allowing you to interview for the role. While this may seem obvious, Liu says it’s important to explicitly include the words “thank you” in the email.

— The value you could provide. Ideally, you want to demonstrate how you could add value to the company. To do so, Liu says you could “build on an idea you discussed, share a resource or even offer to introduce the interviewer to a helpful contact.” However, don’t stress too much if you’re struggling to come up with something valuable to share. It’s better to skip this step than insert something into your email that feels inauthentic or forced.

— Your interest in the company. In the thank-you email, reiterate why you’re interested in the role and why you’re the right person for it. For example, you could explain how your skills transfer to the position.

— Next steps. Your email should state your hope that the hiring manager will allow you to progress to the next round of interviews, Liu says.

Professional Thank-You Interview Email Samples

Refer to these samples to help you craft a compelling thank-you email following an interview.

1. Thank-You Interview Email After a Phone Screen

Here are two possible emails you could send to a recruiter after an initial phone screening interview :

Thank-you email template 1: “Dear Ms. Adams,

Thank you for discussing the (job title) position at (company name) with me today. I was glad to hear my background is an ideal match for the team, and I look forward to the next steps in the process.”

Thank-you email template 2: “Dear Mr. Smith,

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me today about my interest in joining (company name) as a (job title). You must engage with many talented applicants, and I appreciate your eagerness to delve into my background and skills.

I’m confident that my previous experiences in various areas, namely (experience), are directly in line with the responsibilities that come with this position, and I’m thrilled about the prospect of adding value to your organization. I remain very interested in this position and look forward to taking the next step to an in-person interview. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any further information.”

2. Thank-You Email After the First Interview

Regardless of how you fared in the first round of interviews, send a thank-you email within 24 hours. Doing so shows the hiring team you appreciate the opportunity and highlights your professionalism and interest in the position.

Here are two templates for a thank-you email after the first interview:

It was a pleasure meeting you today at (company name). I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me about my qualifications. Your question on (topic) was excellent, as it allowed me to explore the (details of the topic) with you. After our meeting, I realized that while responding to your question on (topic), I failed to elaborate on (details).

Finally, I hope my background and experience in (experience) will help demonstrate my ability to offer unparalleled value to your company. Thank you once again for your time and consideration. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can provide any other information.”

Thank-you email template 2: “Hi James,

Thank you so much for your time today. I enjoyed learning more about the growth and future goals of the team at (company name). I believe my knowledge and experience launching marketing campaigns could be of great value to your team.

Please let me know if I can provide additional information to demonstrate my qualifications. I’m very interested in continuing in the interview process and appreciate your consideration.”

3. Professional Email for a Status Update

In most cases, you should hear back from the company within a week or two after the first round of interviews. Unless the hiring manager lets you know that it’ll take longer, consider sending a follow-up email to check the status. Here’s an example:

“Hi Mary,

I really enjoyed meeting with you on (date) and wanted to express my gratitude for the opportunity to discuss my qualifications and skills for the position of (job title). I’m very interested in becoming a part of (company name) and would like to follow up with you on the status of my application.

Are there any updates on the position? Again, thank you so much for your consideration. I hope to hear from you soon.”

4. Follow-Up Email on a Key Interview Point

A follow-up thank-you email that focuses on a key point from the interview is a great way to remind the interviewer that your skills and experience align with the company’s needs. Here’s an example.

“Dear Mr. Johnson,

Thank you for the opportunity to discuss the marketing manager role at (company name).

I found our conversation about leveraging data for targeted campaigns particularly exciting and have been thinking more about how my experience with data analytics could be beneficial.

In my previous role at BrightPath Marketing, I led a project that used data analytics to increase engagement by 35%. I believe this experience could be valuable for your team’s goals.

Thank you again for considering me. I’m excited about the possibility of joining your team.”

5. Thank-You Email After a Zoom Interview

If your interview was conducted over Zoom or other video conferencing software, here is a sample thank-you email:

Thank you so much for meeting with me over Zoom today. I really enjoyed learning more about the position and am confident that my skills and experience make me a strong candidate for this role.

6. Thank-You Email After Second Interview

Your thank-you note after the second round of interviews should restate your interest in the position and highlight your skills and experience. Here’s an example:

“Dear Ms. Peters,

Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today.

Following our discussion, I’m even more excited about joining your team at (company name). The conversation about your upcoming sustainability campaign was particularly inspiring and has reinforced my belief that my skills in content creation and social media marketing would be a great fit for the innovative work you’re doing.

I understand you are meeting other candidates this week, but feel free to email me at any point if you need additional information or have any questions.

I look forward to hearing from you.”

7. Thank-You Email After the Final Interview

To stand out among other job applicants, send a thank-you email after the final interview to express your appreciation for the opportunity and reiterate your enthusiasm for the role and the company.

“Dear Mr. Cole,

It was a pleasure meeting with you and the panel today. I enjoyed our discussion and appreciated learning more about the role, including the challenges and opportunities it presents.

I’ve learned a lot about your company by speaking with so many team members. It was reassuring to hear how enthusiastic and collaborative the team is, which solidified my interest in joining (company name).

I look forward to hearing from you about the position. Please let me know if there are additional details I can provide.”

8. Internal Interview Thank-You Email

Sending a thank-you email for an internal role is just as important as sending one to a hiring manager at another company. Here’s what an internal interview thank-you email may look like:

“Dear Ms. Berry,

Thank you for taking the time to interview me for the senior content marketing manager role. I appreciated the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to the team and further develop my career within (company name).

My five years of experience in marketing and skills in search engine optimization, data analytics and project management make me a great fit for the role. Having been with (company name) for almost three years, I am enthusiastic about taking the next step in my career and contributing to our shared goals.

Please let me know if you need any other information. I look forward to learning about the next steps in the process.”

9. Thank-You Email to a Recruiter After an Interview

A thank-you email to the recruiter is a nice way to show you’re grateful for their help in arranging the interview and to keep the lines of communication open.

“Dear Ms. Chang,

Thank you for arranging the interview with (company name). The conversation with the team went well, and it was great to learn about the exciting projects they are working on. I’m even more excited about the opportunity to become a part of their team.

Thanks again for your help throughout this process. If there’s anything else you need from me or next steps I should prepare for, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.”

10. Internship Interview Thank-You Email

Sending a thank-you note after an internship interview can make a big difference in your chances of getting the internship. It will also leave a positive impression that could lead to future opportunities with the company.

“Dear Mr. Garcia,

Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me today. I’m even more excited about the potential of working with you after our discussion. I’ve been a big fan of your company’s work for many years, which I hope came across during the interview.

This internship sounds like the perfect opportunity for me to get hands-on experience with data analysis, and I’m eager to dive into interpreting data and turning it into actionable insights for your company.

Once again, thank you for considering me for this internship. I’m looking forward to hearing from you about the next steps.”

Check Your Work

Your thank-you interview email shows the hiring manager how you communicate, so double-check it and ensure there are no spelling and grammar errors. It’s also important to “match the tone of your thank-you emails to the tone of the organization,” says Loren Margolis, certified career coach and founder of TLS Leaders. For example, if the company has a formal culture, start your greeting with “Dear (name)” or “Hello (name).” But if it’s a more casual startup, using “Hi (name)” may be more appropriate.

Also, remember that some members of the hiring team might forward your email to other team members, so make sure to customize your emails based on the person’s title, department and interests.

The Trump campaign responded to Oprah Winfrey ’s speech at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday by resurfacing an admiring letter she once wrote to the man she’s now urging voters to reject.

In her surprise appearance in Chicago, the billionaire TV star encouraged fellow independents to join her in endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris ’ campaign. “Decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024,” she said to rapturous applause. “And just plain common sense—common sense tells you that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz can give us decency and respect.”

Winfrey also encouraged voters to “choose loyalty to the Constitution over loyalty to any individual,” and invoked a Harris campaign slogan by adding: “Let us choose the sweet promise of tomorrow over the bitter return to yesterday… We’re not going back.”

“Let us choose joy, because that’s the best of America,” Winfrey said in closing. “But more than anything else, let us choose freedom, why? Because that’s the best of America. We’re all Americans, and together let’s all choose Kamala Harris!”

The comments apparently touched a nerve in the Trump camp.

His campaign’s “War Room” X account shared a private handwritten letter Winfrey sent to Trump in January 2000. She penned the note in response to an excerpt Trump had sent her from his book The America We Deserve in which he wrote that she would be his “first choice for vice president.”

“Donald—I reviewed the book excerpt. I have to tell you, your comments made me a little weepy,” Winfrey’s letter reads. “It’s one thing to try and live a life of integrity—still another to have people like yourself notice. Thank you.”

At the bottom of the letter, Winfrey added: “Too bad we’re not running for office. What A TEAM!”

Axios reported on the note last year when Trump included it in a book compiling 150 private letters. In the book, Letters to Trump , the former president wrote that he still regards Winfrey as “amazing,” but acknowledged the sentiment was not reciprocated. “Sadly, once I announced for President, she never spoke to me again,” Trump wrote.

In her speech Wednesday, Winfrey also took a shot at Trump’s actual pick for vice president, Ohio Sen. JD Vance , and his comments about childless cat ladies . Winfrey said that, when a house is on fire, Americans don’t ask about the homeowner’s race, religion, sexuality, or politics.

“We just try to do the best we can to save them,” Winfrey said. “And if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady, well, we try to get that cat out too.”

Donald Trump ’s campaign quickly reminded people Wednesday that Oprah Winfrey was once a fan of the former president.

But, unfortunately for Trump, that ship has sailed.

The media mogul and iconic talk-show host gave an energetic speech in support of Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention. In a convention designed to needle Trump, Winfrey portrayed him as selfish and Harris as focused on the needs of everyday Americans rather than her own.

She said of freedom, “Every now and then, it requires standing up to life’s bullies.”

Winfrey — who long filmed her famous talk show in Chicago — offered a full-throated endorsement of Harris and characterized her campaign by singing out, “Joy!” She added: “Decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024, ... let us choose common sense over nonsense.”

Trump’s campaign, in response, posted a letter to social media that Winfrey wrote him in January 2000 in response to an excerpt Trump sent her from his book “The America We Deserve.” Trump wrote in the book Winfrey would be his “first choice for vice president.”

“Donald — I reviewed the book excerpt. I have to tell you, your comments made me a little weepy. It’s one thing to try and live a life of integrity — still another to have people like you actually notice. Thank you,” she wrote at the time.

Good evening. I'm Adam Kinzinger and I'm proud to be in the trenches with you as part of this sometimes awkward alliance-to defend truth, democracy, and decency. I was just a kid when I was drawn to the party of Ronald Reagan-to his vision of a strong America, the shining city on a hill. I was a Republican for 12 years in Congress and I still hold onto the label. I never thought I'd be here, but listen, you never thought you'd see me here did you?

But I've learned something about the Democratic Party. And I want to let my fellow Republicans in on the secret. The Democrats are as patriotic as us.

They love this country just as much as we do. And they are as eager to defend American values at home and abroad as we conservatives have ever been.

I was relieved to discover that because I've learned something about my party, too. Something I couldn't ignore. The Republican Party is no longer conservative. It has switched its allegiance. From the principles that gave it purpose, to a man whose only purpose is himself.

Donald Trump is a weak man pretending to be strong. He is a small man pretending to be big. He's a faithless man pretending to be righteous. He's a perpetrator who can't stop playing the victim. He puts on, listen, he puts on quite a show but there's no real strength there.

As a conservative and a veteran, I believe true strength lies in defending the vulnerable. It's in protecting your family. It's in standing up for our Constitution and our democracy. That, that is the soul of being a conservative. It used to be the soul of being a Republican, but Donald Trump has suffocated the soul of the Republican Party.

His fundamental weakness has coursed through my party like an illness, sapping our strength, softening our spine, whipping us into a fever that has untethered us from our values.

Our democracy was frayed by the events of January 6th, as Donald Trump's deceit and dishonor led to a siege on the United States Capitol. That day, I stood witness to a profound sorrow: the desecration of our sacred tradition of peaceful transition of power, tarnished by a man too fragile, too vain, and too weak to accept defeat.

How can a party claim to be patriotic if it idolizes a man who tried to overthrow a free and fair election? How can a party claim to stand for liberty if it sees a fight for freedom in Ukraine, an attack pitting tyranny against democracy, a challenge to everything our nation claims to be, and it retreats? It equivocates. It nominates a man who is weirdly obsessed with Putin. And his running mate, who has said, "I don't care what happens in Ukraine." And he wants to be vice president, yeah.

How can a party claim to be conservative when it tarnishes the gift our forebearers fought for? Men like my grandfather, who served in World War II. Who believed in a cause bigger than himself and he risked his life for it behind enemy lines. To preserve American democracy, his generation found the courage to face down armies.

Listen, all we're asked to do is summon the courage to stand up to one weak man.

Some have questioned why I've taken the stand I have. The answer is really simple ladies and gentlemen: We must put country first.

And tonight, as a Republican speaking before you, I'm putting our country first. Because the fact is, I do belong here. I know Kamala Harris shares my allegiance to the rule of law, the Constitution, and democracy. And she is dedicated to upholding all three in service to our country. Whatever policies we disagree on pale in comparison with those fundamental matters of principle, of decency and of fidelity to this nation.

To my fellow Republicans: If you still pledge allegiance to those principles, I suspect you belong here, too. Because democracy knows no party. It is a living, breathing ideal that defines us as a nation. It's the bedrock that separates us from tyranny, and when that foundation is fractured, we must all stand together united to strengthen it.

If you think those principles are worth defending, I urge you: Make the right choice. Vote for our bedrock values and vote for Kamala Harris.

Former President Trump, in a string of posts on his Truth Social platform , insulted Vice President Kamala Harris — whom he called “Comrade Kamala” — as she spoke Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where she formally accepted her party’s nomination for president.

Trump billed the running commentary as a live analysis of what he called “her puff piece.”

The presidential contest between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is essentially a toss-up at this point, according to pollsters. But Harris stakes out her vision for unifying the country while confronting her opponent.

“Too many ‘Thank yous,’ too rapidly said, what’s going on with her?” he asked as Harris began her remarks.

He asked where Hunter Biden was. He said Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a former high school football coach, “was an ASSISTANT Coach, not a COACH.”

And, just after Harris praised her late mother for teaching her and her sister to “never do anything half-assed,” Trump posted: “Kamala’s biography won’t lower prices at the Grocery Store, or at the Pump!”

Harris denounced Trump’s behavior during the deadly insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, when his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to undermine the certification of Joe Biden’s electoral win.

“In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man,” Harris said. “But the consequences of putting Donald Trump back into the White House are extremely serious. Consider not only the chaos and calamity when he was in office, but also the gravity of what has happened since he lost the last election.”

Trump posted: “The Chaos and Calamity is allowing our Country to be infiltrated by Millions of Criminals!”

Fact-checkers say Trump often exaggerates immigration numbers. He also frequently highlights crimes committed by immigrants, but studies have shown that people in the country illegally are less likely to have been incarcerated than those born in the U.S.

Harris continued by saying Trump “sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol, where they assaulted law enforcement officers.”

“PEACEFULLY AND PATRIOTICALLY!” he wrote.

She continued: “When politicians in his own party begged him to call off the mob and send help, he did the opposite. He fanned the flames.”

He responded: “IS SHE TALKING ABOUT ME?”

A few minutes later, he suggested Harris “leave the Speech right now, go to Washington, D.C., close the Border, allow fracking in Pennsylvania and otherplaces, and start doing the things she’s complaining about aren’t done!”

After Harris finished her nearly 40-minute address, Trump, who regularly praises North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin, posted: “There will be no future under Comrade Kamala Harris, because she will take us into a Nuclear World War III! She will never be respected by the Tyrants of the World!”

Earlier in the day, Trump spoke at a news conference near the U.S.-Mexico border in Cochise County, Ariz., where he began his remarks by saying that Democrats illegally pushed President Biden out of the race in order to replace him with Harris — a false claim he has been repeating frequently this week.

“It’s a very sad time for this country in many ways. We had a candidate — I was no fan of Joe Biden — but the way he was taken out was a coup ,” he said.

He then praised the border wall behind him as the “Rolls-Royce of walls,” said undocumented migrants were taking the jobs of Black people and Latinos, and, as he is wont to do, lashed out at the media for its coverage of border policy.

At one point, he suggested that the reporters present walk to an opening in the border wall, “if you have the courage to do it.”

“We’re gonna end up without a country,” he said of the situation at the border. “You’re not gonna have any media. They don’t have media. They do their own media. They don’t need media.”

“They,” presumably, referred to undocumented immigrants coming across the southern border. While freedom of the press varies widely by country, immigrants do, typically, have access to news media in their home countries.
