Product first, campaign second

So with all of those positive benefits of the platform figured out, we wanted to make sure we had the product itself in the right place before we launched.

We’ve been working on Salsa for a long time now and wouldn’t have felt comfortable revealing the ability to pay for it until we hit a very important milestone. We had a final prototype.

Doing all of the sourcing and actual production is secondary—there was absolutely no way we could have gone public without people being able to see real photos (and touch in person) a functioning prototype.

This meant that we had to do all of the development before we ever saw a cent.

Finding backers in the real world

We launched the product at our annual Booth Summit, which is a convention for photobooth owners to get together and learn from experts in the field. Launching a product in a receptive environment is generally considered to be a good idea. The same was definitely true for us!

We had a crowd of people who had just told us they were dedicated to growing their business… and we had the chance to offer them a way to do just that. I really can’t emphasize enough how important it is to make products that matter for people who will care about them.

This opportunity to see the product in real life was an essential component for our launch, but it might not be the same for you. I think it just shows how essential having a great prototype is. People love to touch and feel what they’re buying, if you’re talking about something physical… you should be able to show a prototype before you ask for money.

Building excitement with even the smallest backers.

We knew that we wanted to have a ton of incentives for early backers so that they’d be rewarded for taking a leap of faith on a new photobooth.

We’re obviously not making a whole lot of money on that first $1999 tier. But it enabled people to be part of something fun.

Every $1999 backer is always going to be able to say, not just that they got a great deal, but that they were one of the first to get on board. It means a lot more than a discount code expiring—just look at how frustrated people are on Twitter when a limited stock of rewards is secretly gobbled up.

Kickstarter doesn’t reveal the names of backers, but it humanizes them. And it just adds to the fun of getting your own spot! Even for someone backing now, they’re able to say that they were an early adopter.

Delivering on our promise

One of the most common critiques of Kickstarter items is that they either never show up or that they take years. I wanted to make sure that our timeline was easy to deliver and also reasonable.

Nobody deserves to wait two years for your product after they pay for it. I felt like we needed to offer a much quicker turnaround than that. We launched on Black Friday 2018 with an estimated delivery of April 2019.

That’s under 6 months and much lower than the average Kickstarter! The most important thing is that we will be able to meet that timeline. You can’t go around promising delivery dates and missing them, this isn’t a consumer product.

Anytime you’re working with the events industry you have to be very transparent and up front about timelines. A bride who books a photobooth needs it to show up on her wedding day. It’s non-negotiable!

VC funding is a traditional and long process, but an effective way to raise money for your business.

The term "VC funding" refers to venture capital firms investing in businesses in exchange for equity.

The VC's (venture capitalists) are an individual or small group investing in your business and typically require substantial ownership of the business, with the hope of seeing a return on their investment.

VC's are typically the best approach for businesses with high startup costs - where it would be very difficult to raise the money on your own or through a loan.

When deciding whether to take this approach, it's important that you have a few things in place first, and know what you're getting yourself into:

Determine if your business is ready

Having an idea is not enough to get VC funding.

Typically, VC's will check to make sure you have these things in place prior to closing any deal:

  • An MVP (Minimal Viable Product)
  • A founding team with all proper documents in place (articles of organization, business formation)
  • A validated idea with actual customers buying your product/service

Setting Up Your Led Lights Business (Formation and Legal)

When it comes to setting up your business, you may find yourself in a place where you have to make some financial and legal decisions.

The first thing you'll want to decide on is whether you want to be an LLC, S-Corp, or C-Corp.

These three options are found to be the most common when starting a small business, and all serve to protect your personal assets and also provide you with certain tax benefits.

  • LLC : All income and expenses from the business are reported on the LLC personal income tax return.
  • S corp : Owners pay themselves salaries + receive dividends from profits.
  • C Corp : C Corps are separately taxable entities that file a corporate tax return (Form 1120). No income tax is paid at the corporate level and any tax due is paid at the owners individual expense.

How Do I Pay Myself As A Small Business Owner?

Most entrepreneurs start a business to do something they love- but at the end of the day, you still have bills to pay (maybe now more than ever).

But it's important to strike the right balance - if you pay yourself too much, you could be putting your business at risk.

There are two common ways to pay yourself as a business owner:

1. Owner's Draw

Many entrepreneurs pay themselves through an owner's draw. This means that you are technically sean as "self-employed" through the eyes of the IRS and are not paid through regular wages.

At the point that you collect money from the draw, taxes typically are not taken out - so make sure you are prepared to pay these taxes once you file your individual return.

As an owner who takes a draw, you can legally take out as much as you want from your equity.

This type of compensation is suited for Sole props, LLCs, and partnerships. If you’re an S corp, you can pay yourself through both a salary and draw if you choose.

If you decide to pay yourself a salary, you will receive a set and recurring amount. This will be taxed by the federal government and the state you reside in.

The reality is that it can be really complicated to set your own salary, so we have some tips for you to consider:

  • Take out a reasonable amount that allows you to live comfortably but also sets your business up for success
  • Consider the number of hours you are working weekly + the type of duties you are performing.
  • Set your salary based on your industry-standard, location, and profits (or projected profits)
  • Look at your P&L statement : Deduct your own pay from that amount. This is important so you can first tackle important business expenses, and then pay yourself from the amount leftover.
  • Pick a payroll schedule (and stick to it)! In the US, it's most common to pay yourself and employees twice a month.

How To Price Your Led Lights

One of the most challenging aspects to starting a LED lights business is determining how much to charge for your LED lights.

When businesses under-price their product, this can be extremely detrimental to their bottom line and reputation.

Often times, businesses under-price their products to drive demand and volume, but that last thing you want is for customers to view your product/service as "cheap." Additionally, this can have a big impact on the type of customer you attract, which can be difficult to recover from.

On the other hand, when businesses over-price , this tends to be just as damaging to the business.

When customers buy, it's likely that they will explore the internet and look at other competitors to ensure they're getting the best value + deal. This is why it's so important that you research your competition and understand where you land in the marketplace.

Here are some factors to consider when pricing your product:

Understand your customer

It's important that out of the gates, you identify the type of customer you want to attract and how much they're willing to pay for your service. One great way to do this is by surveying your customers. Here are some important items you'll want to takeaway:

  • Customer demographic: Age, gender, location, etc.
  • Buying habits of your customer: What they buy + when they buy
  • Level of price sensitivity with your customer

All of these segments will help you identify the type of customer you're attracting and how to price your product accordingly.

Understand your costs

When pricing your LED lights, it's critical that you first identify all of your costs and consequently mark up your LED lights so you can factor in a profit.

The actual cost of your LED lights may include things like:

  • The actual cost to make the product (ie. raw materials, supplies, manufacturer).
  • Shipping + overhead fees
  • Operating costs to run your business

You may want to consider creating a spreadsheet with every single expense involved in operating/owning your business. This will give you an idea as to what you need to generate in order to at the very least, break-even and will help you price your products to factor in a profit.

Create revenue goals

When determining the price of your LED lights, you'll want to create goals for revenue + how much profit you want your LED lights business to make.

This process is simpler than you may think:

  • Think about your breakeven cost (by completing the above step).
  • Create a revenue goal based on your break-even cost
  • Evaluate the # of items you plan to sell in a given period (make sure this is a realistic number)
  • Divide your revenue goal by the number of items you plan to sell

This figure will help determine your estimated price per product in order to meet your revenue goals.

Evaluate your competition

The last piece in determining how to price your LED lights is by simply looking at your competition.

The best way to do this is by finding like-minded businesses that offer product(s) with similar perceived value. Then, you can compare prices of the different businesses and determine where your LED lights fits best in the marketplace.

First objective: profitability

Our profitability is OK at this point but definitely not where it should be yet. To this day I have not paid myself a regular salary yet...and it’s been 4 years!

The problem is not the cost of goods which are well under 20% of sales, which is good by any standard. The problem is fulfillment costs. In 2018 we transitioned from our first fulfillment company to a much bigger company. We did this because we wanted to provide faster shipment speeds and a better quality of packaging. In hindsight, we chose a company which would have been more suitable for a larger company with bigger volumes. We ended up being tied in with some pretty large minimum monthly payments. So currently fulfillment costs are currently around 45% of sales...way too high.

We are now looking to transit to another fulfillment center. Our target is to get our fulfillment costs down to around 30% of sales which I believe from what I have researched, is possible.

Just to be clear, when I say fulfillment that includes transportation costs also - FedEx, USPS, etc. Not just storage, picking, and packing. I am pretty sure that it is possible to get fulfillment costs down even lower, and I suspect that some large pro sellers on amazon.com work with around 20-25% of sales.

So our target P+L for 2020 looks something like this:

  • Cost of goods, including inbound freight and clearance - around 22% of sales.
  • Fulfillment - around 30% of sales.
  • Digital Advertising & Promotion - around 15% of sales.
  • Other marketing and office costs, including salary costs - around 10% of sales.
  • That would leave us around 23% of sales - enough to pay me a liveable salary and for the company to make a profit and finance future growth.
That's the first objective for 2020: to right-size the P+L so that we are profitable at our current sales level

I began looking at all the light therapy devices available in the market and identifying improvements that could be made to the existing products. The current masks were uncomfortable (strapped around the head) and corded (not user-friendly) with a remote control attached to the mask. We found a manufacturer who could make a comfortable mask using earpieces and implement a touch sensor so it could be cordless with no need for remote control.

When designing the product and the packaging, I was heavily influenced by (A.R.T.).

Apple, Rayban, and Tesla - are three of the dopest and most influential companies;

  • Apple: Superior design
  • Rayban: Coolness factor
  • Tesla: Futuristic innovation and Elon’s work ethic

I made sure my logo was cool.

I made sure my branding was cool.

I applied the same mentality when designing my panels which I call the Dermabeam Supremes. I didn’t like the modular designs (stacking smaller panels) of existing devices because it’s harder to set up and they didn’t look aesthetic. I wanted to offer a uniform panel with varying sizes that take up less room in the house and also look great.

The panels range in height from 9 inches (smallest) to 6 feet (tallest) and are used primarily by athletes and biohackers. It offers both red and near-infrared light which provides trillions of cells in the body with more energy (ATP) to help repair any damage. With cellular inflammation being involved in most medical conditions, Dermabeam Supremes offer a safe and effective way to combat inflammation daily.

How To Find A Supplier For Your Led Lights Business

Here are the steps to consider when finding a supplier/manufacturer:

Know your design

One very critical step to finding the right supplier is having an initial idea of what your design/product will look like.

Sketching is one of the most simple ways to get started in the design phase.

What's great about sketching is that you can practically do this anytime, anywhere - even on the back of a napkin.

To get started, all you need to do is pick up a pen and paper and start drawing - or if you are working on a virtual/software product this can be a diagram that outlines the user interface or experience.

It's also very common to manufacture your LED lights on your own - either from your home or in a commercial space.

In order to get the product right, you may want to consider experimenting with different designs and recipes until you find the perfect one.

Some founders choose to manufacture their product in-house so that they can control quality, manage costs, and easily handle production/logistics.

Down the road, you can always choose to outsource your LED lights.

If you want to start a line of unique products, then you have two basic options: you can make them yourself, or you can find a manufacturer to work with that creates custom formulations for their clients.

I knew that I was trying to build a larger-scale business and that the home-made model wasn’t right for me, so I had to find the right manufacturing partner. It took a lot of research, phone calls, and emails before I found the laboratory that met my needs.

I wanted to create unique products (as opposed to private label), so I worked with the manufacturer’s chemist who specializes in skin care formulations. This process takes some time!

First, you have to tell the chemist what kind of product you’re looking for , the ingredients that you want to include or leave out, and what you want the final product to look like/feel like/smell like, etc.

Then, the manufacturer sends you the first sample , you try it out or give it to others to try, and then provide feedback for revisions. In my case, the first two products came together fairly easily because I only needed to make small changes to stock formulations.

There are many, many rules and regulations around cosmetics and skin care products. If you want to sell products that contain FDA regulated ingredients then you have to register and get a permit.

My products aren’t FDA regulated, so I didn’t have to go through this step, but I did have to be aware of the many guidelines and standards around labeling and safety warnings. Some people hire a lawyer to help them through this process, but my manufacturer was able to guide me through the regulatory process.

The entire process, from researching labs to work with to having the first finished products shipped out to me, took around six months.

Purchasing Inventory For Your Led Lights Business

When first starting out, it's important to start small with your overhead to get a gauge for what people want.

Just remember - if you order a line of items that don't sell, it's nearly impossible to recoup the money lost.

Buying the right inventory takes research and planning in order to get it right.

  • Identify your target audience : Identify the age, gender, annual income that you will be selling to. This is a defining factor in ordering the right inventory that will sell.
  • Research your competition : Conduct market research and identify the different types of styles, price points, and materials being used. This will help you see what's trending and ways that you can improve/stay ahead of the competition.
  • Create an inventory wishlist : Identify what you need for the launch of your business and create a budget that you will stay within. Remember, it's okay to start small.
  • Find a supplier Make sure to first compare prices and analyze different options.
  • Delivery timing : Schedule the inventory delivery to match with seasonality and trending buying seasons

Pro-tip: It's easy to become biased based on your own fashion preferences on what types of shoes/apparel to purchase. This is where a lot of fashion businesses go wrong. It's important to base purchase decisions on current buyer behavior, trends in the market, and specific to your niche.

  • There are roughly 100 million thoroughly committed prime customers, so you're bound to tap into new business

  • You may encounter some "copycats" and counterfeit products
  • Amazon owns the relationship with the customer (you lose control over product reviews + customer service)
  • If you already have a low-markup, amazon may not wrth your while and you could end up losing money
  • Commissions and listing fees are high - it's easy to lose control of your offering

  • Turning on FeedbackGenius for auto review requests (it's not as good as it used to be, but it's still worth it)
  • Get a trademark and get Brand Registry, this protects you from hijackers and other unscrupulous sellers
  • Quick response to customer messages (under 12 hours) here are my stats my mom does all my customer service "Employee of the Year" status
  • Drive outside traffic (amazon loves outside traffic because they don't have to spend so much to acquire customers) Facebook, Instagram, and Google Adwords are the usual suspects
  • Use ocean shipping to save mucho $$$ on unit costs (use flexport)

How To Retain Customers For Your Led Lights Business

Retaining customers is one of the most effective ways to grow your LED lights business.

Oftentimes, it's easy to find yourself focusing on generating new customers, vs retaining your current ones.

I reached out to a ton of skincare and beauty influencers and only a handful replied to my emails. Fortunately, Cassandra Bankson (1.8M Youtube subscribers) took an interest in Dermabeam. I sent her a care package and she made a video for Black Friday highlighting the Dermabeam promotion as one of the brands she covered. This led to an explosion in sales and we sold over 100 units in 3 days which was our first taste of success and allowed us to continue working with her.

I also like to give celebrities care packages. This video of me giving the Dermabeam Pro to Diplo went viral and garnered 300K views on Tiktok.

For the first 7 months, I was focused on marketing Dermabeam in the most creative ways possible. I would give it to DJs to wear on stage or in the club. This translated to more eyeballs, but not dollars. Unfortunately, the raver audience doesn’t fit my target demographic of women 30-65 so my efforts didn’t translate to sales. I’ve toned down the spending on creative marketing to focus more on relevant skincare influencers, but I continue to do free marketing every time I rage. One of my long-term goals is to manifest a Dermafest where all my DJ homies get a custom mask and perform on a huge Dermabeam stage in the shape of a mask.

I’ve also sent care packages to numerous skincare and beauty magazine editors. Some were kind enough to feature Dermabeam including Clean Beauty Magazine!

Making semiconductor wafer

1. In the first step, a semiconductor wafer is prepared, the composite materials like GaAs, GaP, etc are selected on the basis of the color of the LED that is being manufactured.

The crystalline semiconductor is made at high temperatures and using a high-pressure chamber.

Gallium, arsenic, and/or phosphor are purified and mixed using conditions that need high temperature and high-pressure.

2. Liquid encapsulation: The components are liquefied and pressed together and then they are forced into solution. To prevent their escape from the chamber they are covered using a layer of boron oxide which blocks it and this method is called liquid encapsulation.

After the element is mixed properly and form a uniform solution. A rod is dipped into the solution and taken out from the chamber gently. While pulling solution is cooled and it forms a long crystalline ingot of GaP, GaAs, or GaAsP.

3. Wafer polishing: The boule is sliced into thin (around 10 mils) wafers of the semiconductor.

Wafers are polished properly so that their surface becomes smooth so that the wafers can rapidly accept more layers of a semiconductor on the surface.

4. Cleaning of wafer: Manufactured wafers are cleaned using rigorous chemicals and an ultrasonic process that will have various solvents; this process cleans the organic matters that may be present on the polished wafer surface.

This cleaning process will provide a better LED.

Adding epitaxial layers

5. The layers of semiconducting crystals are developed on the surface of a polished clean wafer in a process popular as LPE-Liquid Phase Epitaxy.

In this method, semiconducting layers that have the same crystalline orientation are added to the wafer. The layered wafer is placed on the graphite slide and then pushed into the channel of molten liquid.

Different dopants are included in the melt to prepare a layer of material with various electronic densities, and after the deposition of layers, it will provide a continuous wafer’s crystal structure.

Liquid Phase Epitaxy (LPE) will manufacture a uniform layer of material which is several microns hard and thick.

6. After adding many layers it is important to add additional dopants to change the characteristics of diodes for efficiency and color.

Once additional doping is done wafer is again kept in a high-pressure furnace that has a gaseous atmosphere with dopants such as nitrogen or zinc ammonium; Nitrogen is added at the top layer of the diode so that we can get the yellow or green light.

7. Introduce metal contact: Metal contact is added to the wafer.

The contact pattern is based on the design stage and diode combination (whether it is singular or combines).

Contact pattern is reproduced in photoresist which is a light-sensitive material, the light-sensitive compound is distributed over the surface of the wafer. The photoresist resist is made strong using a low temperature around 100 o C.

The pattern is duplicated on photoresist keeping it over the layered wafer and exposing the resist by ultraviolet light.

The exposed area of photoresist resist is cleaned with the developer and the unexposed area is enclosed with the semiconducting layers.

8. Contact metals are dispersed in another high-temperature vacuum-sealed chamber and filled in the exposed area.

The contact metal will adhere to the exposed area of the semiconductor wafer and the photoresist can then be washed using acetone. This will result in the presence of metal contacts on the semiconductor wafer.

An additional layer of metal will be added on the backside of the wafers according to the final mounting scheme for the LED.

The deposited metal undergoes an annealing step where the wafer is heated for many hours in the furnace with having hydrogen or nitrogen flowing through it; during this step, the bond between the metal and the semiconductor is hardened.

9. A single 2-inch wafer produced in this way will have a similar pattern repeated up to 6000 times on it; this gives an idea of the extent of the completed diodes.

The diodes are cut by cleaving or sawing method, each segment cut from the wafer is called the die which is a difficult process and has many errors.

Mounting and packaging

10. Individual dies are mounted on the estimated package; it is mounted on two metal leads with two inches in length.

The back of the wafer is coated with metal lead to an electrical contact with a lead that will rests on.

In wire bonding, the finish of the wire is pushed down on the contact metal using a fine needle. The gold is appropriately delicate to twist and attach to a like metal surface.

11. Finally, the entire assembly is sealed using plastic, the wire and dies are suspended inside the mold that is shaped according to an optical need of the package.

12. Mold is filled with liquid plastic or epoxy and then it is packed.

In about 48 hours, Vice President Kamala Harris went from No. 2 on the Democratic presidential ticket to the presumptive presidential nominee, after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her. Here, we fact-check some of Harris’ recent speeches — before and after Biden dropped out:

  • Harris repeated the claim that former President Donald Trump “intends to cut Social Security and Medicare,” even though he did not attempt to cut either retirement program when he was president, and he has said that he will not cut them in a second term.
  • She referred to Project 2025 — a conservative plan for deeply cutting and overhauling the federal government — as Trump’s “extreme Project 2025 agenda.” Trump has disavowed the project, which he described as “seriously extreme.”
  • The vice president repeated one of her favorite talking points when she claimed “Donald Trump openly vowed, if reelected, that he will be a dictator on Day 1.” He said he was joking when he said he wouldn’t be a dictator “except for Day 1.”
  • Harris left the misleading impression that Trump was to blame for the loss of “tens of thousands” of manufacturing jobs. The U.S. added more than 400,000 manufacturing jobs under Trump — until the economic effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic reversed all those job gains.

A former U.S. senator from California who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, Harris seemingly overnight became the Democratic Party’s last chance to stop Trump from regaining the White House.

Biden, who never recovered from a disastrous debate performance in late June, announced on July 21 that he would not seek reelection, saying it was in the “best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President.” Shortly after, Biden gave Harris his “full support and endorsement” for president.

The party quickly coalesced around Harris, who announced at a campaign event in Milwaukee on July 23: “I’m told as of this morning that we have earned the support of enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination.”

Harris needs 1,968 delegates to win the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month, and the Associated Press reported that she has the support of more than 3,000 delegates.

Project 2025, Social Security and Medicare

Since Biden dropped out and endorsed her, Harris has delivered two speeches and both times she referred to Project 2025 — a conservative plan for remaking the federal government — as Trump’s plan, even though the former president has disavowed it.

And in both speeches, she cited Project 2025 as evidence that Trump wants to cut Social Security and Medicare, even though the former president has offered no plans to do so.

Harris, Wilmington, Delaware , July 22: He and his extreme Project 2025 will weaken the middle class and bring us backward — please do note that — back to the failed trickle-down policies that gave huge tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations and made working families pay the cost; back to policies that put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block; back to policies that treat health care as only a privilege for the wealthy, instead of what we all know it should be, which is a right for every American. Harris, Milwaukee , July 23: But Donald Trump wants to take our country backward. He and his extreme Project 2025 agenda will weaken the middle class. Like, we know we got to take this seriously. And can you believe they put that thing in writing? Read it. It’s 900 pages. But here’s the thing. When you read it, you will see Donald Trump intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.

As we have said before , Trump says he has no plans to cut Social Security or Medicare.

In his four years as president, Trump did not propose cutting Social Security’s retirement benefits, and his budgets included bipartisan proposals to reduce the growth of Medicare without cutting benefits. (For more, see our February 2020 article “ Competing Claims on Trump’s Budget and Seniors ,” which details how Trump as president proposed cuts to the Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income programs, but not to retirement benefits.)

After leaving office, Trump has pledged not to cut Social Security, most recently on July 20 in his first joint campaign appearance with his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio. “We will not cut one penny from Social Security and Medicare,” Trump said in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In January 2023, when House Republicans were discussing ways to cut government spending, Trump  said  in a video: “Under no circumstances should Republicans vote to cut a single penny from Medicare or Social Security to help pay for Joe Biden’s reckless spending spree.”

As for Project 2025, Trump described it at his Michigan rally as “seriously extreme.” He added, “I don’t know anything about it. I don’t want to know anything about it.”

Project 2025 lays out “four goals and principles” for Medicare “reform,” but there is nothing in the 900-plus page document that calls for cutting Social Security, which the authors of the project call a “ myth .”

Harris and the Democrats link the project and its agenda to Trump because, as CNN has reported , there are more than 100 people involved in the project who have worked in the Trump administration. Prominent figures such as Mark Meadows , who was Trump’s chief of staff, and Stephen Miller , a top aide who was involved in setting major immigration policy, are associated with conservative groups that advised the project.

Project 2025, which mentions Trump hundreds of times, includes concepts that Trump supports, including — as Harris alluded to — cutting business taxes and rewriting the nation’s health care laws. But it also proposes things that Trump did not do when he was president, such as setting just two individual tax brackets of 15% and 30% (down from seven) and eliminating or transforming entire government agencies.

There is no telling what parts of Project 2025 Trump would implement, if elected. But Project 2025 is not his “agenda” or “plan,” as Harris said.

Trump’s Dictator Remarks

In recent speeches this month, including in Philadelphia on July 13 , Harris repeated a popular talking point that “Donald Trump openly vowed, if reelected, that he will be a dictator on Day 1.”

Harris was referring to a comment that Trump made at a Fox News town hall in December. At the event, Sean Hannity gave Trump the chance to respond to critics who warned that Trump would be a dictator if elected to a second term. “Under no circumstances, you are promising America tonight, you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody,” Hannity said . Trump responded, “Except for Day 1.”

Trump went on to say, “We’re closing the border. And we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator.”

Trump later claimed he was joking with Hannity. In a Feb. 4 interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo, Trump said: “It was with Sean Hannity, and we were having fun, and I said, ‘I’m going to be a dictator,’ because he asked me, ‘Are you really going to be a dictator?’ I said, ‘Absolutely, I’m going to be a dictator for one day.’ I didn’t say from Day 1.”

Trump repeated his intention to close the border and drill for oil. “That’s all. And then after that, I’m not going to be a dictator,” Trump told Bartiromo, claiming his “dictator” comment was “said in jest.”

Manufacturing Jobs

In a July 18 speech in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Harris left the misleading impression that Trump was to blame for the loss of “tens of thousands” of manufacturing jobs.

“So, Donald Trump tries to claim he brought back American manufacturing,” Harris said. “The fact is, under Donald Trump, America lost tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs.”

The fact is, those jobs were lost during the global COVID-19 pandemic. As of February 2020, the U.S. had added 414,000 manufacturing jobs under Trump, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But then the economic effects of the pandemic took hold. In April 2020 alone, the U.S. lost 1.3 million manufacturing jobs.

Most of those jobs came back. But at the end of Trump’s four years, the U.S. had lost 178,000 manufacturing jobs since January 2017, when he took office.

Under Biden, the rest of the manufacturing jobs returned and then some. Since January 2021, the U.S. has added  762,000 manufacturing jobs .

Clarification, July 25: We have updated this story to clarify that while Trump did not propose cuts to Social Security’s retirement benefits as president, he did propose cutting the Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income programs.

Deutsche börse and hessian ministry of economics bundle sustainability initiatives in the financial centre of frankfurt.

New Sustainable Finance Cluster will bundle activities focusing on the sustainability of the financial sector

Deutsche Börse’s Accelerating Sustainable Finance Initiative and the Green Finance Cluster Frankfurt of the Ministry of Economic Affairs for Hesse announced their merger on Wednesday. In the future, all activities pursued by the two initiatives will continue as a joint effort under the name Sustainable Finance Cluster. The aim is to make greater efficient use of financial market expertise in the area of sustainable finance, based on broad dialogue and, most importantly, to develop and implement specific approaches to ensure the sustainability of national and international financial market structures in the future.

Deutsche Börse launched the Accelerating Sustainable Finance Initiative back in May 2017. The initial objective of the original 23 signatories of the “Frankfurt Declaration” was to define a framework for a sustainable financial sector and launch specific initiatives in the financial centre of Frankfurt. The signatories, of which there are now 50, are currently exploring the topics of “sustainable products and services”, “impact investing” and “ESG data” in three working groups.

The Green Finance Cluster Frankfurt was established in November 2017 and is sponsored by major financial market players that have a leading role in the green finance segment. The aim is to support the transition to a climate-friendly and sustainable economy, starting with laying the groundwork in areas, including standards and further training, and to give Frankfurt a voice that resonates internationally. The Cluster, which was initiated by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, is a project that forms part of the Integrated Climate Protection Plan Hesse 2025. It is located at the Frankfurt School-UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance as part of Frankfurt School of Finance & Management.

The merger of the two initiatives aims to further develop a unified position on the sustainable development of the German financial industry taking existing individual member structures and the individual focal topics that have been identified into account. The Cluster’s business will be managed on equal terms by Kristina Jeromin, Head of Group Sustainability of Deutsche Börse Group, and Karsten Löffler, Co-Head Frankfurt School – UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance.

“One objective of the Frankfurt "Green Finance Cluster" was and is to enable cooperation that brings together the innovative forces and competencies from the financial industry, investor groups, political decision-makers and academia to produce a network organisation. This is why the Cluster has pursued the approach of bundling activities relating to green finance in Germany on a single platform from day one. The merger of the Green Finance Cluster with Deutsche Börse Group’s Accelerating Sustainable Finance Initiative will now create a strong network with one voice for green and sustainable finance in the financial centre of Frankfurt”, said Tarek Al-Wazir, Hessian Minister of Economics.

“Sustainable finance opens up huge opportunities for Germany as a business location. In addition to more robust risk management, we hope to tap into innovative fields of business. The merger is a very important step towards developing and exploiting this potential in full”, said Kristina Jeromin.

“The education of employees in the banking and finance industry is a key factor to reach our goal of more sustainable finance. With the merger of the two initiatives we are able to establish a broad foundation for a collaboration in developing sustainable learning methods and content”, explained Karsten Löffler.

The major transformation process moving towards a more sustainable economy also entails a great deal of responsibility for the financial sector. Forward-thinking and efficient financial market structures are required in order to for example, meet the objectives set out in the Paris climate agreement or to realise the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The implementation of forward-looking financing strategies that focus, based on a valid pool of data, on medium to long-term risk and reward profiles are essential within this context.

Helping our customers through the CrowdStrike outage

On July 18, CrowdStrike, an independent cybersecurity company, released a software update that began impacting IT systems globally. Although this was not a Microsoft incident, given it impacts our ecosystem, we want to provide an update on the steps we’ve taken with CrowdStrike and others to remediate and support our customers.  

Since this event began, we’ve maintained ongoing communication with our customers, CrowdStrike and external developers to collect information and expedite solutions. We recognize the disruption this problem has caused for businesses and in the daily routines of many individuals. Our focus is providing customers with technical guidance and support to safely bring disrupted systems back online. Steps taken have included:  

  • Engaging with CrowdStrike to automate their work on developing a solution.   CrowdStrike has recommended a workaround to address this issue and has also issued a public statement. Instructions to remedy the situation on Windows endpoints were posted on the Windows Message Center .   
  • Deploying hundreds of Microsoft engineers and experts to work directly with customers to restore services.   
  • Collaborating with other cloud providers and stakeholders, including Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS), to share awareness on the state of impact we are each seeing across the industry and inform ongoing conversations with CrowdStrike and customers.  
  • Quickly posting manual remediation documentation and scripts found here .
  • Keeping customers informed of the latest status on the incident through the Azure Status Dashboard here .  

We’re working around the clock and providing ongoing updates and support. Additionally, CrowdStrike has helped us develop a scalable solution that will help Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure accelerate a fix for CrowdStrike’s faulty update. We have also worked with both AWS and GCP to collaborate on the most effective approaches.    

While software updates may occasionally cause disturbances, significant incidents like the CrowdStrike event are infrequent. We currently estimate that CrowdStrike’s update affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines. While the percentage was small, the broad economic and societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services.  

This incident demonstrates the interconnected nature of our broad ecosystem — global cloud providers, software platforms, security vendors and other software vendors, and customers. It’s also a reminder of how important it is for all of us across the tech ecosystem to prioritize operating with safe deployment and disaster recovery using the mechanisms that exist. As we’ve seen over the last two days, we learn, recover and move forward most effectively when we collaborate and work together. We appreciate the cooperation and collaboration of our entire sector, and we will continue to update with learnings and next steps.
