Download: Homework contract for your child

Homework can be a hot-button issue for both you and your child. Setting up a homework contract is a good way to defuse some of that tension and avoid homework battles. Here are two sample contracts you can download.

A homework contract is an agreement that outlines what you and your child will do to make sure homework gets done on time and well. It can help your child develop good study habits and become a more independent learner.

Homework contracts can also outline rewards and consequences for kids when they follow or don’t follow their part of the contract.

Download the homework contract

Homework contract for middle-schoolers and high-schoolers PDF - 145.2 KB

You can tailor your contract to address your child’s specific homework challenges. For example, if your child struggles with time management, the contract can lay out what time of day the homework needs to be done.

Fill out the contract together to make sure your child understands what’s being agreed on. Revisit the contract as your child’s workload changes or if things aren’t working as you expected.

Additional Information on Homework Contracts

The major purpose of a homework contract is to eliminate all the daily hassles that arise from family conflicts over when, where, and how homework is to be done. A contract places the responsibility for getting homework done on the student which is where it should be. It also helps many students establish a homework routine. Even young students will benefit from having a homework contract.

The best contracts are simple ones with few terms.

You definitely should not have your family’s first homework contract use all the terms of the sample contract.

Contracts need to be individualized to suit the needs of each family.

For a homework contract to be effective, all terms must be negotiated and completely agreed upon by both parents and students.

After a trial period of two weeks, the contract should be looked at again by the parent and student to see if any terms should be changed. Provision also needs to be made to look at the contract periodically (monthly, every grading period) to see if it needs to be revised as conditions change.

Remember all children are different. Some will need to do their nightly homework in two or more time periods. Others may need timed breaks to release energy or to get a snack.

How Much Time Should Students Spend on Homework

The rough rule of thumb that most educators use is that students should work on homework approximately 10 minutes for each year in school. Following this rule, a second grader would spend 20 minutes on homework while a fifth grader would spend 50 minutes. At the high school level, it may be necessary for students to do as much as two hours a night depending on the courses that they are taking and whether or not they have a study period at school.

Students do not have to work on homework every day. Weekends can be free of homework for many students depending on their typical assignment load. Older students can choose specific times on the weekend to review the week’s work or do projects. Poor students will profit from spending some weekend time on review or skill-building work. Redoing assignments can be helpful for these students.

It is not necessary for all students to have assigned homework times in a contract. Instead, the agreement can be for students to get all homework done by a specified time. With this type of agreement, no homework for any reason can be done after this time. Instead, the students can get up early to complete any unfinished work.

Why Should Students Have Homework?

In the early grades, there is only a very small relationship between the amount of homework children do and their achievement in school. It is not until sixth grade that a solid relationship can be shown between doing homework and higher achievement. The reason for doing homework earlier is to develop the homework habit as well as independent study skills.

Homework Contracts: Tapping the Power of Parents

  • Study & Organization

Students who regularly complete and turn in homework assignments perform significantly better in school than those of similar ability who do not do homework (Olympia et al., 1994). Homework is valuable because it gives students a chance to practice, extend, and entrench the academic skills taught in school. Parents can be instrumental in encouraging and motivating their children to complete homework. This homework contract intervention (adapted from Miller & Kelly, 1994) uses goal-setting, a written contract, and rewards to boost student completion (and accuracy) of homework. Students also learn the valuable skills of breaking down academic assignments into smaller, more manageable subtasks and setting priorities for work completion.

  • Copy of Daily Homework Planner (see attachment at bottom of this page)

Preparation:

  • Train Parents to Be Supportive 'Homework Coaches'. Parents are often very committed to helping their child successfully complete homework. To ensure that parents have positive interactions with students around homework, though, the school should sponsor one or more parent workshops to offer tips on how to be 'homework coaches'. In particular, parents should be offered strategies for listening in a careful and non-judgmental manner to their child, to avoid nagging about homework, and to brainstorm with their child about possible solutions for common homework difficulties (e.g., writing down all homework assignments correctly). Additionally, they should be taught the essentials for setting up and following through with a simple reward system at home (Miller & Kelly, 1994). At this introductory workshop, parents would also be trained in the steps of the homework contract (described below).

Steps in Implementing This Intervention:

  • Step 1: The Parent Creates a Homework Reward System for the Child. The parent should put together a short menu of reasonable daily and weekly rewards that the child can earn for successfully completing homework. Good choices for daily rewards are those that do not cost a lot of money, and do not take much time to deliver. While weekly rewards should be somewhat larger than daily rewards, they should still be affordable and not require a great deal of the parent's time. Because any rewards that the parent chooses must appeal to the child, the parent should consult the child in the selection of rewards.
  • Step 2: The Parent Negotiates the Homework Contract Program With the Child. Before starting the homework contract, the parent should meet with the child to introduce the program and to set up a reward system (see Step 1). Together, they agree on the percentage of homework goals the child must complete each day (e.g., 80%) to earn the daily homework reward. They also agree on the number of times in a week that the student must earn the daily reward in order to be eligible for the weekly reward (e.g., 3 times in a week).
  • Step 3: The Parent and Child Fill Out the Daily Homework Planner. Each day when the student has assigned homework, the parent and student sit down with a copy of the Daily Homework Planner [web page; pdf document]. Together they preview the homework assignment for all subject areas. Then they break the assignment into manageable 'chunks' or subtasks. A description of each subtask is written into the Daily Homework Planner in enough detail so that both parent and student know what must be done to complete that homework chunk. A description for a math subtask, for example, might read "Complete 20 multiplication problems from pg. 40 of math book, then use answer key to check work". The parent and child might write on the homework contract that the child will reserve 30 minutes to complete that subtask.
  • If the student earned the daily reward, the parent has the student choose an item from the reward menu. (Daily rewards should be given immediately if possible.)
  • If the student also earned the weekly reward, the student can also select an item from the weekly reward menu (to be delivered in a timely manner but when convenient to the parent).
  • Step 5: Fade the Reward System. As the child shows that he or she is able to complete daily homework assignments on a regular basis, the parent may want to start 'fading' the reward system. First, the parent may stop the daily rewards but continue the weekly rewards. Then the weekly rewards can be stretched out to biweekly and eventually monthly rewards. In the final stage of fading, the parent can stop giving out regular rewards altogether. Instead, the child's motivation can be kept high by the parent 'surprising' him or her occasionally with an unexpected reward.

Troubleshooting

The parent does not want to use the homework contract If a parent is unable or unwilling to use the homework contract with a student, the intervention can be used in school instead. At the end of the school day, for example, the teacher or other staff member might meet with the child to preview all homework assignments and assist the student in filling out the Daily Homework Planner. If the student brings the Contract sheet and completed homework back to school the next day, the teacher can give him or her the earned daily (and perhaps weekly) reward.

Jim's Hints

Identify Other People To Help the Parent With the Homework Contract . If the student attends an afterschool program where he or she completes homework, personnel from that program may be willing to set up and use the homework contract with the child. Or if there is a responsible older sibling in the home, he or she may be willing to administer a homework contract system. The parent would still be expected to deliver any rewards that the student may have earned.

Does Ricky Pearsall's Injury Pressure the 49ers to Extend Brandon Aiyuk?

Grant cohn | aug 23, 2024.

  • San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers drafted Ricky Pearsall in Round 1 specifically to create leverage over Brandon Aiyuk.

Aiyuk wants a contract extension that's apparently worth more than $30 million per season and the 49ers aren't eager to give it to him. So the 49ers drafted Pearsall to potentially replace Aiyuk or to convince him to accept a lower offer.

But Pearsall has a shoulder injury and it's unclear how severe it is. He hasn't practiced since Aug. 6 and has reaggravated it twice since he initially suffered the injury before the draft. Now it seems possible that Pearsall could miss Week 1 against the New York Jets.

If Pearsall's injury is serious and he's facing a long recovery timeline, would the 49ers feel more pressure to get a deal done with Aiyuk now and get him back on the field for Week 1? Because if Aiyuk doesn't play Week 1, it's unclear who would replace him in the starting lineup. Robbie Chosen clearly isn't an option. Chris Conley doesn't seem like much of one, either. The 49ers could start rookie fourth-round pick Jacob Cowing, but he has played only one preseason game. It's unclear how good he really is and if he's ready for a big role on a Super Bowl contender.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak to the media after the 49ers' final preseason game against the Raiders and surely will answer questions about the specifics of Pearsall's injury. If his report is dire, don't be surprised if Aiyuk is back in the 49ers' facility pronto.

Mortgage rates fall to the lowest level in 17 months as Fed tees up rate cuts

"For Sale" sign in front of house

US mortgage rates fell again last week to the lowest level since April 2023, spurring a modest pickup in applications to buy a home.

The contract rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage eased for a fourth week to 6.44%, the longest stretch of declines this year, according to Mortgage Bankers Association data released Wednesday. That provided a small boost to home-purchase applications in the week ended Aug. 23 after a sizable drop in the prior period.

Mortgage rates move in tandem with Treasury yields, which have been falling recently on expectations the Federal Reserve will start cutting interest rates in September. Minutes of the central bank’s July meeting last week indicated “ several ” officials saw a case for reducing rates at the time, and Chair Jerome Powell said Friday “the time has come for policy to adjust.”

A further decline in borrowing costs is seen helping provide a spark for the housing market. But the weak level of purchases indicates that affordability challenges, due in part to high home prices, are holding prospective buyers.

The MBA survey, which has been conducted weekly since 1990, uses responses from mortgage bankers, commercial banks and thrifts. The data cover more than 75% of all retail residential mortgage applications in the US.

The eighth season of Dana White’s Contender Series kicked off on Tuesday, August 13, from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Four fighters earned contracts with the UFC in each of the first two events. Tonight, Tuesday, August 27, Episode 3 of Season 8 of the DWCS took place with five new fights and 10 hopefuls looking to be signed to the UFC.

Since the DWCS began in 2017, White has awarded 253 contracts to participants. In the first season, 16 fighters, including current UFC bantamweight champion Sean O'Malley, earned contracts. In 2023, that number jumped to 46 fighters.

As was the case in the first two episodes of this season, the UFC CEO awarded four contracts, but there was more to White’s decisions this week. He also set up a rematch between two fighters who went to a split decision, handed out win/show money to a losing fighter, awarded an extra bonus, and gave a losing fighter a promise of a shot at fighting in the UFC if a fighter in their weight class should fall out.

Check out the details on the above in the story below.

Season 8, Episode 3 of the DWCS aired Tuesday on ESPN+. The series will be back next week for Episode 4 with five more fights.

Bogdan Grad: Bogdan Grad fell short last year when Tom Nolan knocked him out at lightweight on a DWCS card. Grad returned to DWCS on Tuesday for another go, but this time at featherweight.

Michael Aswell outlanded Grad, but his power made the difference as he put significant damage on his opponent throughout their 15-minute scrap. Grad did fade a bit down the stretch, and he also shot a takedown in the waning moments of the fight. Still, his effort in the 14:50 before that was impressive enough that Dana White informed him on his way back to the dressing room that he was getting an extra $5,000 bonus for what he did in the Octagon.

Marco Tulio: Marco Tulio fell short in his first attempt to win a DWCS contract, winning a decision in 2023. He did not need the judges in 2024, stopping Matthieu Duclos in the second round.

At times it looked like Tulio was too focused on the stoppage. He was throwing all his strikes with maximum power, which left him out of position more than once. However, his power came through for him when he landed a beautiful spinning kick to his opponent’s liver, which dropped him to the mat, where Tulio finished the fight.

With the win, Tulio moved to 12-1 as a pro.

Malcolm Wellmaker: Malcolm Wellmaker looked calm and relaxed in his DWCS bantamweight bout, moving to 8-0 with a massive first-round knockout of Adam Bramhald.

The 30-year-old had incredibly fast hands and a lot of power. That speed and power, coupled with his ability to pick up on his opponent's tendencies, allowed him to finish the fight with style. Brahmald was reaching in with his punches. It was during one of those exchanges that Wellmaker uncorked a counter right that dropped Brahmhald to the canvas. There was no need for any follow up strikes.

Wellmaker needs to shore up his defense, as he tended to lower his hands when he backed out of striking exchanges. Outside of that, he looked excellent on Tuesday night.

With the win, Wellmaker moves to 8-0 as a pro.

Nick Piccininni: Nick Piccininni opened tonight's DWCS card with a split-decision win over Jack Duffy. Taking the fight on short notice, the three-time NCAA Division I All-American and four-time Big 12 Conference wrestling champion out of Oklahoma State University used his base to pick up the win.

Piccininni's wrestling was on point throughout the 15-minute flyweight contest. He also showed a willingness to engage on the feet. If there is one thing Piccininni, who moved to 8-0 with the win, needs to work on is his striking defense. He did not check the heavy leg kicks his opponent landed throughout the fight. Those blows left him limping back to his corner at the end of the first stanza.

After the event, White said he disagreed with the judges decision on this fight. He did not award a contract to either man, but he did say that if both men would agree to a rematch, White said they would run the contest back in Week 10 of this season of the DWCS.

Liam Anderson: Liam Anderson struggled to get his grappling game in his middleweight matchup against Andrey Pulyaev, and that cost him the fight. He had nothing to offer Pulyaev on the feet.

Michael Aswell: Michael Aswell put out a high output throughout his bout against Bogdan Grad. The problem for him was that while he had high volume, he did not land with much power. Aswell focused on landing a one-two throughout the fight. He might have convinced the judges that he deserved the nod if he had mixed up his striking and thrown with some more power.

Aswell had a good effort and showed good cardio, but the judges favored the damage that Grad put on his opponent.

Aswell did not get a contract, but he got his win/show money for his performance and promise from UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby that if someone falls out of an upcoming card that he will get the nod for a UFC fight.

Matthieu Duclos: Matthieu Duclos fought a little too defensively against Marco Tulio, especially after he felt the power of his opponent’s strikes. He was focused on landing counters to his own detriment. That’s not to say he didn’t have some success with that approach, he did, but his inability or unwillingness to lead the dance was the main reason he was on the wrong end of a TKO on Tuesday.

Adam Bramhald: Adam Bramhald’s big mistake in his bout against Malcolm Wellmaker was that he leapt into his strikes. That tendency allowed his opponent to pick up on his timing and end his night with a powerful right hand before the end of the first stanza.

Jack Duffy: Jack Duffy had an advantage over Nick Piccininni in the striking department, especially with his heavy leg kicks. The problem was that he couldn’t keep the fight standing, as Piccininni’s wrestling and ground game were too strong for Duffy to defend against. That wrestling and the top game gave Piccininni the win.

One thing that must be noted about Duffy’s loss was that Piccininni was his third opponent for this card. His two previous foes who fell out were strikers, so he had a significant change to deal with on short notice.
