Introduction and Student Responsibilities

This guide was developed for use by graduate students and thesis readers when preparing a manuscript to publish on Dominican Scholar to ensure that it:

  • Complies with the requirements of your department  and of  the University
  • That it meets a level of professional work
  • That it meets accessibility standards

While preparing your manuscript be sure to allow enough time for the following:

  • Sending out and receiving copyright permissions for images
  • Meeting with the Scholarly Communications Librarian to review formatting and accessibility
  • Inevitable edits and corrections
  • Submission of your final paper to Dominican Scholar

It is crucial for students to read and understand the information presented in these guidelines and to contact the Scholarly Communications Librarian immediately when clarification is needed. Manuscripts not meeting these guidelines will not be published.

Meet with a Librarian

Meet with the Scholarly Communications Librarian early in the writing process to set up formatting and to anticipate potential problems. Additionally, if you are planning on using any images that you did not create (i.e. if you use any images, charts, maps, illustrations, etc. from another source), then you may run into some copyright issues. Make an appointment with the Scholarly Communications Librarian to identify potential conflicts. Start the copyright permission process as early as possible in case you are denied permission and need to find substitute images.

Mphil/phd art psychotherapy, course information.

Social, Therapeutic and Community Studies

3-4 years full-time or 4-6 years part-time

Course overview

We offer opportunities for students who want to pursue research in art psychotherapy.

For MPhil and PhD study, you usually register for research by written thesis (although there are also possibilities for research based on a written element and studio practice).

Whatever your topic, you have your first supervisor in Art Psychotherapy and may have your second in another department – Art , Educational Studies , Psychology , or Sociology , for example.

You meet your supervisors regularly for discussion and guidance, and present your work to the Art Psychotherapy research student group.

You also attend the Goldsmiths Research Methods Training Course.

Supervision is currently available in the following areas:

  • art therapists and their art
  • cross-cultural issues
  • evidence-based practices
  • history and development of the professions in the UK and internationally
  • occupational choice, career development and role change of arts therapists and arts therapy trainees
  • clinical work with various client populations

Current research topics include :

  • key issues in art psychotherapy with the blind
  • the creative experience inside and outside an art psychotherapy group
  • the image as an assessment tool with children who have an autistic spectrum disorder
  • thinking about art with adults who have learning disabilities
  • art therapists’ working environments

You'll be assessed by a thesis and viva voce.

Find out more about  research degrees at Goldsmiths .

Contact the department

If you have specific questions about the degree, contact Panagiotis Pentaris .

Entry requirements

You should normally have (or expect to be awarded) a taught Masters in Art Therapy/Art Psychotherapy.

International qualifications

We accept a wide range of international qualifications. Find out more about the qualifications we accept from around the world.

If English isn’t your first language, you will need an IELTS score (or equivalent English language qualification ) of 6.5 with a 6.5 in writing and no element lower than 6.0 to study this programme. If you need assistance with your English language, we offer a range of courses that can help prepare you for postgraduate-level study .

If you're applying for external funding from one of the Research Councils, make sure you submit your application by the deadline they've specified.

Selection process

Admission to many programmes is by interview, unless you live outside the UK. Occasionally we'll make candidates an offer of a place on the basis of their application and qualifications alone.

Why I’m Looking Forward to the AATA2024 In-person Conference: A Graduate Student’s POV

July 20, 2024 | By Dejah M. Chapple, George Washington University Art Therapy Graduate Student and AATA National Office Intern

Some of you may remember me from the registration desk (as in this photo!) at last year’s AATA annual conference in San Diego. I wanted to share my experience about the conference, in case you are wondering whether it’s worth it to attend AATA2024 in Pittsburgh – or whether you belong there.

Here’s a look at what I learned, who I met, and, of course, the overall vibe.

art therapy doctoral dissertation

The Learning Opportunities and the People

First of all, there are more than 200 learning sessions at the AATA2024 conference! While you may not be looking for Continuing Education credit, these sessions will help you explore new subjects or emerging issues in our field. And they are all taught by amazing leaders in art therapy from around the world! ( See the sessions by subject track .)

Second, the people attending the conference are a mix of inspiring luminaries in the field (the ones you read about in your coursework), the rising stars (who are just as inspiring), and students like us who are eager to connect. The real conversations happened after sessions or after hours, in the hallways and common areas. Last year, everyone’s brains were buzzing, and we were all so open to share our own perspectives with each other.

Some highlights for me were when I happened to meet Dave Gussak , PhD, ATR-BC, HLM, having read about his work in class, as well as Linda Gantt , PhD, ATR-BC! They, like so many others, were approachable and eager to meet the “next generation” of professionals.

My tip is to look at people’s name tags and introduce yourself.

(Photo: With Linda Gantt)

art therapy doctoral dissertation

If this will be your first time attending a conference, or feel a little overwhelmed at the thought of a conference with 1,000 people, let me tell you about the vibe . The AATA conferences are where long-time professionals go to get inspired and re-connect with the passion that brought them to our profession in the first place. I was surprised by how committed so many of us were about issues, like social justice, equity, and access to mental health care especially for marginalized communities. I can assure you that you’ll find connection and belonging at AATA2024.

And if you don’t know where to start, make sure to attend the Newcomer’s Session on Oct. 6, or just come by the Open Art Studio . It’s where everyone goes to process what they’ve learned, make art with friends, or spontaneously meet people. The Open Art Studio has literally hundreds of pounds of art supplies where you can get messy! (Trust me, I know this because I helped lay the Visqueen plastic sheeting on the floor at last year’s conference! 😊)

I truly hope to meet you at AATA2024 in Pittsburgh. In the meantime, if you have questions, please reach out to the National Office team at [email protected] or connect with me on Instagram at @dejahchapple

Department of the History of Art

Phd bianca hand joins uc, davis faculty.

We are thrilled to announce that Bianca Hand, who earned her PhD in summer 2024, has accepted a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Davis in their Department of Classics.

Bianca has been an outstanding member of our academic community, contributing significantly to both scholarship and teaching. Her dissertation, “The Relentless Pursuit of Difference: The Subversive Role of Alterity in the Reliefs and Architecture of Sargon II’s (721 – 705 BCE) Royal Palace at Khorsabad,” was recognized by her committee for its originality and depth.

At UC Davis, Bianca will continue her groundbreaking research and bring her expertise in Mesopotamian and Eastern Mediterranean art and archaeology to a broader audience. This position is a testament to Bianca’s dedication, hard work, and the high regard in which she is held by peers and mentors.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Bianca on this remarkable achievement. We are confident that she will continue to excel and inspire in her new role, and we look forward to witnessing her future contributions to the field.
