“There is something for everyone here. It has lots of short items that you can pick and choose from, it builds vocabulary without boring students, and it also shows how sentence structure and paragraphing are important. I recommend it.” —Jane Perry, Norwalk Community College “For critical thinking and writing courses, America Now is a hybrid reader-manual for tactful discussions about popular issues in the United States. The questions are framed to invite personal experience and engagement with the topics and the shorter ones make great discussion board posts.” —Michael A. Reyes, California State University, Los Angeles “ America Now is a practical and well-organized text that supports essential college-level writing skills and focuses on a variety of timely topics in a way that encourages students to think critically and engage in academic conversation.” —Lauren E. O’Leary, Gateway Community College "The exercises, especially the ‘Thinking Critically’ questions, are extremely helpful to students. They allow students to practice their writing without having to write several essays—and they help them engage with the texts." —Andrew DiNicola, South Georgia State College

This course introduces students to the central concerns of the interdisciplinary field of American Studies. We will approach the central questions 'what is America?' and 'who is American?' through the intersection of race, gender, disability, class, incarceration and immigration status, sexuality, and location. We will explore how historically today's 'America' has come to be, how it functions, and what changes we desire, including movements such as Black Lives Matter, Idle No More, prison abolition, Occupy, DREAMers, and student debt activism. From Lady Gaga to military interventions, from television shows such as Survivor to Viramontes's novel Under the Feet of Jesus, our case studies and texts will range broadly to offer students various entryways into the field of American Studies.
Daniel Mattingly
Introduction to American Literature and Culture "This module offers an interdisciplinary survey of American literature and culture from the Nineteenth century to the present day, examining the construction of a specifically American identity in relation to the sweeping social, technological and economic changes which characterize the American experience. The module as a whole explores American culture and literature in a lively and interdisciplinary manner, reading the search for an American Self as an attempt to come to terms with the bewildering transformation of the world, and the position of the individual within it." Reading List 2016: * Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Emma Lazarus, Melvin Tolson, Sandra Cisneros [selected poems and extracts for introductory lecture] * Edgar Allan Poe - 'The Fall of the House of Usher & Other Stories' [various short stories, Gothic fiction] * Willa Cather - 'My Antonia' [modernism, regionalism] * Mark Twain - 'Huckleberry Finn' [Southern literature, racial politics, vernacular style] * Emily Dickinson [various poems, modernism] * John Dos Passos - 'Manhattan Transfer' [modernism, the city, urban space, cinema, advertising, industrial age] * Jean Toomer, Langston Hughes, Stirling A. Brown [selected poems as part of 'Harlem Renaissance'] * Don DeLillo - 'White Noise' [postmodernism, simulara, mass media, waste, history]"

English Language and Literature Department: Selected Student Essays II
Olgahan Baksi Yalcin
As the digital era reshapes conventional practices, both students and lecturers encounter new and significant challenges, a topic thoughtfully explored by scholars such as Susan Bassnett, Judith Seaboyer, and Tully Barnett. This engaging exploration invites readers to examine the effects of shifting reading habits and the appeal of digital alternatives. Within this collection, graduate, undergraduate, and Ph.D. students from the English Language and Literature Department of Istanbul Yeni Yüzyıl University contribute their insights, transforming their assignments into compelling book chapters. We hope these selected student essays bridge the divide between traditional and modern literary texts, fostering a harmonious coexistence that enriches academic discussions in adaptation studies and English language and literature.
