Usually, a short story focusses on only one incident, has a single plot, a single setting, a small number of characters and covers a short period of time.

  • Plot: Select a situation from real life. Define the place and time.
  • Main character: Define your protagonist, and set your focus right about what he or she wants.
  • Conflict: Suggest basic outlines of the conflict; what all the trouble is going to be about. The complication describes all the troubles and incidents of action dramatised into scenes.
  • Dramatic intensity: After a number of crises a climax is reached. Then came the turning point and the beginning of the end.
  • Resolution: Make clear the consequences of the action. There must be a clear connection to the narrative. Twists in the plot make the story interesting. Innovative use of language and structure fused with humour, haunting images and style add flavour.

1. Two friends were passing through a dense forest. Suddenly they heard some animal screaming Complete the story in 150-200 words.

They froze in fear, but when the sound persisted, they decided to help the stricken beast, even at the risk of their own lives.

They walked towards the direction of the sound, arming themselves with staves made from tree branches.

The rest of the forest was still, and only the monkeys overhead were chattering. Imagine their surprise when the friends discovered that the agonizing sounds were the work of a little herder and his friends. They were from the village nearby and this was their form of recreation every afternoon. Imitating jungle sounds to perfection was a game they played in the afternoon.

To make amends, the boys decided to entertain their guests by imitating the chattering of monkeys, the call of the koyal, the sound of gurgling water, and even the whistling of the breeze.

As the two friends turned to leave, the cowherd party regaled them with a spine chilling tiger roar.

This time the friends knew better. They yelled back a friendly farewell saying: See you soon…….

1. Imagine that you are Jeet/Gita. You have moved into a new house and decide to explore a little. After an hour of going through the rooms, you stumble into the basement. Here, you find a small diary. The diary tells you the story about the person who lived in this house before. Use your imagination to complete the story.

2. You saved your pocket money to buy one of your favourite books. You decided to read it on Sundays. But one day on your way back from school you lost the book in your school bus and couldn’t find it. You pasted a notice on the notice board and finally, someone returned it to you. Write a story in 150-200 words about the whole experience.

A Lucky Find

The money I had received on my 14th birthday, sufficed to buy the complete Harry Potter series.

I started reading volume I. I carried the book to school and showed it around on the school bus.

When we reached school and began asking for the book, no one owned up to having it.

I decided to put up a notice on the notice board and offered the finder a handsome treat of double ice cream and cold drinks alongside.

On the second day, a junior from the NCC squad walked up with the book. He had found it thrown in the bushes behind the school garden. I thanked the boy very much and kept my promise. My week’s pocket money was gone in treating him. I felt a sense of relief as I put the book safely back in my school bag.

For the first time, I realized what it feels to lose something that is dear to oneself.

“In the Jungle”

Jitu was one of the best sharpshooter in the village. He always hung his trusty catapult on the side of his shoulder and carried it everywhere. All the boys used to praise Jitu when he used to shoot birds and squirrels. One day, Jitu and his gang decided to go hunt in the jungle. Excited, Jitu rushed off with his catapult and a few pellets. One of his friends spotted a flock of birds fly past them. He whispered, ‘quick, quick’.

Jitu positioned himself, aimed and fired a pellet at one of the birds. The pellet flew up only to miss by a hair’s breadth. All of a sudden, they heard a loud growl coming from one of the bushes. The growl was from a huge brown bear coming at them. The pellet must’ve missed and landed on the sleeping bear.

The boys screamed in fear and ran for their lives. They dashed headlong through bramble, bush and tree. Finally, Jitu and his gang managed to outrun the bear. They vowed never to go recklessly into the jungle or shoot at any bird or bear.

1. Captain Risha Meher, the captain of a merchant ship S.S. Ashwamedha, found the ship caught in a storm off the coast of Nicobar Islands. She ordered her team to take the lifeboats and abandon the ship. Captain Risha Meher was the last to leave the ship, along with her first mate, Jatin Handa. The two were carried to an island. The next morning, strange sounds woke up Captain Risha Meher. She found Jatin was not there with her. Stealthily moving forward, she peeped to see what the shouts were about. She found a tied and bound Jatin surrounded by some stranger. As Captain Risha Meher, write the story of your adventure in 150-200 words.

2. An eminent bacteriologist, Dr Hargobind Narula, went to the tropical rainforests of South America to study some new strains of disease-causing bacteria. There, while carrying out his explorations, he came across a remote, uninhabited area and set up his camp there. A few months later he wrote to his friend. Given below is an excerpt from his letter:

As Dr Hargobind Narula, write a story about your adventure with the dinosaurs. Do not exceed 150 words.

3. This is the year 3500. While cleaning up the garage in your house, you come across your great-great-grandfather’s diaries about his days in school. Using the hints given, write a story about the changes that have taken place between 20XX (the current year) and 3500 (150 words).

4. Choose one of the well-known characters/people given below in the box and write a short story on a day in their life. Remember to use your imagination to make them come to life even if you don’t know the characters. Write the story in about 150-200 words.

5. Imagine that these two aliens, who look like giant ants, came to your school one day. Write a story in about 150-200 words about the incident.

6. Use the given words as hints and write a story in about 150-200 words. Also give a suitable title.

Story Writing is a fictional writing method that is written in a simpler way and has its own natural flow. Story Writing covers five elements: Character (Crucially a Protagonist and Antagonist), Setting , Plot , Conflict , and Theme . Through story writing, you share the experience of characters in a physical setting with a plot that makes it story-worthy, a conflict that causes a riff or relationship core of the characters, and finally the theme of the story as in what the story wants to share.

The beginning is the most fundamental and basic element of story writing format which stresses upon setting the right stage for your characters as well as the plot. Often referred to as the exposition, the beginning of the story is the part where you need to provide the reader with a basic overview of every key character and the setting for the plot in order to hook the reader till the end. 

Often comprised under the beginning element of story writing, character introductions might also happen after the setting has been solidified. It is necessary to produce characters that have a purpose or role in the development of the story. Try creating characters that the reader can relate to and those that connect the plot throughout the narration.

Once you have familiarised the reader with the setting and character, the next step is to work towards curating an intricate and engaging plot. The plot is where the actual action of the whole story occurs. Without including this element in your story writing, you will not be able to intrigue the reader and spark their curiosity. 

Conflict is where you have the chance to experiment with your characters by putting them in a persevering circumstance or rather entering a new sub-plot to intrigue the reader further. This constituent of story writing aims to hook the reader to the plot and you must weave it in an engaging way. Often the conflict in the story can be an event, situation or even a new character. Considered to be the final stage in story writing format, a logical or decisive conclusion is where the story ends. A film script or screenplay is a document written by the screen writer dividing all the important events of the story into scenes, adding dialogues, additional writer notes as well as intercut, action, fade in, transition and all types of filming techniques.

Here is the simple film script format:

  • Use font size 12 in Courier
  • The left of the page should have a 1.5-inch margin.
  • The right of the page should have a 1-inch margin.
  • Make sure to have 1-inch margin on the top and bottom of the page
  • There should be 55 lines on each page.
  • The block for dialogue should start 2.5 inches from the left of the page.
  • All character names are always in uppercase.
  • The character names should always be positioned 3.7 inches from the left of the page.
  • The first page of a script is not numbered.

Actually, story writing is a part of English Grammar in class 9th. Therefore, students should be creative so that they can write a good story on the basis of some clues.

Story writing requires such a structure that readers can connect from beginning to end and also while reading the stories, they remain inquisitive about the next step and keep a little confusion in their minds.

Here are some outlines or prompts for writing concocted stories, read the outlines or prompts first, and then start writing the story.

1. Write a story in 200 to 250 words with the following beginning. Also, give a suitable title for the story.

Outline –

It was 2001. I was about to leave the city for my village by train. I saw some policemen coming towards me. At first, I got scared seeing them, but when one of them asked me, where are you going son? I felt very good ………….

Answer –

Luck can take a person anywhere

However, I fearfully replied, sir I am going to my village as I have got a week off due to the Holi festival. A policeman smiled slightly and said, “What do you do?” I told him that I work in a milk factory. He raised his eyebrows and said, “Will you do a police job?” I got a little confused as no one offered me jobs like that.

When he asked me to get paid ten thousand rupees per month, I was a little convinced. He gave me an address and asked me to reach that address the next day. Although I was about to go to my village that day but I didn’t go and the next day I reached the address given to me by the policeman. There, I saw that many youngsters like me were engaged in the line of recruitment.

Everyone was being asked for his documents, but I didn’t bring my documents with me, so I immediately took the auto from there, came to my room, took my documents, and again reached the same address.

Shortly after I reached my turn came. I gave my documents to a big mustache officer. He looked at the documents and said go ahead. Another officer told me that you have to run 100 meters in 20 seconds, so stand in line. Hearing those words of him, I started thinking for a while because I had never run.

Then, I decided that let’s try once. I remembered God and started running. I completed the race in 18 seconds. At first, I didn’t believe it but it was true. I was finally selected.

2. Write a story in 200 to 250 words with the help of the given outline. Also, give a suitable title for the story.

A young man from a rich family was very worried about his obesity. His weight was increasing with the passage of time. He got treatment for the disease from many doctors but no one was able to cure his disease properly. Everyone would prescribe him medicines and advise him to eat them for months ………….

Anything is possible with determination

He knew that the real reason for his obesity was his lack of diet and exercise, but he always disregarded all those things. When no doctor could solve his problem, he determined one day that he would neither take any kind of fast food nor take rest until his body would be fit.

From the day he started working out and exercising, he took a photo of his body, so that when he got fit, he could compare both the photos and inspire others.

At the same time, he stopped consuming any kind of food that was making his body bloated, which worried his family a lot. He also changed his daily routine. He started getting up very early in the morning and would do all those things which could prove to be helpful in making his body slim.

When his friends came to know about that, they started making fun of him but he didn’t lose his confidence and kept trying. He even stopped associating with friends and outsiders.

When he started working out on the first day, he had a lot of problems but due to determination, he didn’t step back. His hard work of one year paid off. A year later, when he compared his old picture to his body, he was overwhelmed and tears began to fall from his eyes. He did what the doctors couldn’t do.

Clues –

Khemu, a diplomat in his kingdom–he had a good presence of mind–once a function was organized in his kingdom–he went to invite other kings to their courts–some servants stopped him at the door–they asked him for any gold items to enter in–he entered the court as a magician and promised the servants to give half of whatever the king would gift him–the king impressed by Khemu’s respectful words and asked him for a gift–Khemu asked some whips as a gift–the king got angry with the act of the servants and expelled them from the court.

Khemu’s presence of mind

A person named Khemu was a famous diplomat in his kingdom. Everyone was surprised by his presence of mind. He used to get his work done easily by trapping anyone in his talk. He was very generous and dutiful towards his kingdom.

Once a function was organized in his kingdom so he went to invite other kings to their courts. When he was about to enter the court of a king, some servants stopped him at the door and started asking him for any gold items as a bribe to enter inside. He got into a dilemma and thought that they must have done that to everyone.

For a while, he thought something and said, “I am a magician, when I meet the king, I will show him magic and give you half of whatever he gives me as a gift.” All the servants agreed.

He appeared in front of the king and using his style and respectful words, invited him to an event that was organized in his kingdom. The way Khemu invited the King was very impressive. In fact, the king was greatly impressed. As a result of which, he urged Khemu to ask for any gift. Khemu asked the king to give him thirty whips as a gift. Hearing that, the king and other courtiers were astonished.

When the king asked him the reason for that, he told that when he was entering his court, some servants refused to come in and said, “We will let you in, but whatever the king gives you, you will give me half of that.”

The king was very angry with the act of the servants. He called those servants and got each of them thirty whips and also expelled them from the court.

4. Write a concocted story in 200 to 300 words with the help of the outline. Give it a title too.

A very happy family had four members: parents and two siblings. Sister was the youngest, so all the members loved her very much. Brother was a teacher who had taught tuition to the children of small classes at home ………….

A gift to the sister

The festival of Raksha Bandhan was about to come. Preparations were going on in full swing at home. Meanwhile, the sister asked her brother to gift a cycle in honor of tying Rakhi on this Raksha Bandhan. Brother at first started teasing her and said, “I will give you five rupees and you buy toffee from it.”

After bothering her for a long time, he promised her that he would gift her a cycle. One evening, when he was returning home after buying vegetables, he was hit by a car from behind. His whole body hurt and a leg broke.

Now all the members of the family were sad.

All the happiness of Raksha Bandhan had turned into mourning. The brother, seeing the sadness on his sister’s face, was thinking that his sister could no longer ask him for the bicycle. He called his sister near and said, “Don’t be sad, I will definitely buy a cycle for you.” Sister replied, now for me you get well soon, it will be the best gift.

Hearing those words from his sister, he felt very happy internally. On the day of Raksha Bandhan, the sister tied rakhi on the brother’s wrist and wished him a speedy recovery. The brother also happily blessed her with a smile.

The brother had already recovered a little and walked slowly with his feet. He left the house quietly in the evening without informing anyone and after about one to two hours returned home with his sister’s new cycle. All the members of his family got tears in their eyes. Sister hugged her brother and showed a lot of love.

A young man named Rohit was very fond of speaking in public places. He wanted to do such a job in which he would get paid to speak, but due to lack of knowledge, he was unable to find out such jobs …………

Zero to hero

One day he went to a tea shop to have tea. He asked for tea and started drinking. A radio was playing in the shop. He listened that before playing any song, a man would address the audience a little with his melodious voice and play it after telling a little about the song. It was exactly what he wanted to do.

After taking tea, he left there. He asked his friend living in the city about it. He told Rohit that the people who speak on the radio are called RJs. Their job is to speak. He asked Rohit, “Do you want to do this too?” Rohit answered ‘yes’.

One day Rohit left for the city and started looking for RJ’s job. He hardly saw a radio station where he gave his interview and was rejected because he didn’t know that every word had to be taken care of in order to become an RJ. When he came to know about it, he started listening to RJs on the radio and would try to speak like them and practice as much as he could.

After six months of hard work, he was able to speak in the same way as RJs spoke. Again he gave his interview on the same radio station and this time he was successful. Within a few years, he won the hearts of people across the country with his voice and became a hero.

There was still more than an hour left for her train to arrive. So, she got up and started following him. The boy moved out of the station and entered a slum nearby. He got into a house which appeared to be a very dirty and unhygienic place. There were other child beggars in the house who were in the age group of 5 — 12 years. They were thin and weak. They had money but nothing to eat. Just then, a burly man entered the house. The children became quiet. He asked them for the money that they had collected by begging. Last Sunday, I was watching TV. Suddenly I heard people shouting outside. It was about 10:30 p.m. As I opened my door, bright lights from outside dazzled my eyes. I went outside towards the place where a large crowd had gathered outside our colony park. There was a huge spaceship that had landed in the park. It had a thousand lights blinking and from the windows, one could see a few strange figures peeping out. I was surprised to see the aliens. Meanwhile, the police had also reached the park. People were shouting and asking the police to take the aliens out of the ship. They were very excited to see them. By this time, few scientists and researchers had also reached the spot. They had brought some instruments along with them. As they started moving towards the spaceship, the sirens that were installed in it started blowing. We could notice the strange figures hurriedly moving inside the spaceship. Then, as if understanding the intentions of the scientists that they probably wanted to capture them, they started blowing green-coloured dust from their spaceship. Its wheels started moving like a blower and the spaceship started moving upwards. The scientists rushed out of the park. With the help of some passers-by, he picked them up and immediately took them to a hospital in his car. He informed their family members using one of the boys’ mobile. The timely treatment saved the lives of both the boys who were ashamed of their actions after meeting Mohan. He forgave them and advised them to follow traffic rules as they are meant for people’s safety. They promised not to drive until they were eighteen.

It started long back that China attacked India and through a newspaper, Hari came to know that there was a great shortage of manpower in the Indian Army. At the very moment, he determined to devote himself for the sake of the country by fulfilling the demand of manpower.  Though the marriage function of his daughter was going on, he did not care as he was regardless of everything in front of his country. As expected India won over China and by a collective effort of real heroes like Hari. India once more touched the horizon success and the dawn of relief was ours.

Story writing refers to the method of writing in which the writer narrates a series of events that has led to a problem, the progression of the same and the end result that has led to the current situation of the characters in the story. A story can be about a real or fictional incident including real-life or imaginary characters.

In schools, as part of the English language learning process, students are made to write stories. This is done to improve both the language skills as well as the students’ creative thinking skills. Story writing can turn out to be an interesting hobby once you experience the pleasure of developing a story. Learning to write a well-knit story can be made possible if you know the different components of a story and how to structure it.

Is there anyone who does not like reading or listening to stories? As children, all of us must have gone to sleep listening to some bedtime stories narrated by our parents, grandparents or siblings, haven’t you? Now, have you ever wanted to write an exciting story just like the one you heard or read? Have you tried to analyse the components that make up the story? Any idea what the components are?

In addition to these, a story has a point of view in which it is narrated or portrayed and a style in which it is written. Let us now look at each of the components in detail.

No story is complete without a character. Every story would either revolve around multiple characters or a single character. Characters drive the story. Having strong characters of all types (funny, serious, clever, innocent, etc.) is what will make the story interesting and intriguing.

The term ‘setting’ refers to the physical surroundings in which the story takes place. The whereabouts of the characters might also contribute to the setting of the story. The setting of a story can be a forest, a house, a street, space or outer universe, a small island, a train and even someone’s mind. It is up to the writer to include all the details that they think would make the story more colourful.

Many of us are acquainted with the term ‘plot’, but what does the term mean? In simple terms, the plot of a story refers to what goes on in a story or what the story is about. A plot includes various courses of events/actions, climactic points and resolution. After all, a well-woven plot is what will help you form a good and strong story.

A plot is comprises five different elements, namely,

  • Exposition – The point at which the characters and setting of the story are presented; in other terms, the beginning of the story.
  • Rising action – The point in the story when the main character comes across an action or a course of events that becomes an impediment or a conflict in the otherwise undisturbed peaceful life of the main character and those around them.
  • Climax – The most intriguing part of a story which also becomes the turning point of the story.
  • Falling action – This includes actions or events that lead to the conclusion. This point describes the positive or negative turn of events that has taken place as a result of the protagonist’s decision at the climax. At this point, you can also see how the various characters work together or alone to solve the problem or conflict.
  • Conclusion – This point in the story marks the end. It is here that you get to know how everything has settled. The conclusion, be it a happy or a sad one, is the end result of the falling action.

The theme of a story is the idea or subject that pervades the whole story. This is the concept on which the whole story revolves. Examples of themes can be family relationships, music, love and romance, war, rebellion, etc. For instance, the theme of the animated film ‘Coco’ is love for music and the importance of family, and the theme of the animated films ‘Brave’ and ‘Moana’ is breaking out of social norms and following your heart.

The term ‘conflict’ refers to the problem in the story. When all is going on well, there is one point in the story when the main characters come across an obstacle that impedes their journey to achieve a set goal. The conflict is what gets the protagonist to move out of their comfort zone, face the antagonist, act bravely to solve the problem and find ways to attain their goal.

Format of the Story

Basically, every story should have a beginning, middle and end. A story without any one of these would look and sound incomplete.

The Beginning

Just like every other piece of writing, the beginning of the story is what will determine if the reader would want to continue reading or not. So it is very crucial to have a rather riveting start. You have got to keep the readers hooked from the very first moment itself. The age-old and most common way to start a story is with the use of phrases like “A long time ago” or “Once upon a time”. You must have seen it being used in many children’s stories. However, this need not always be the case. You can start the story directly with the character introduction, the portrayal of the setting or even an action.

Beginning the story on a wonderful note and letting it drag later will not help the story in any way. You have to keep the story going. Make use of language cleverly, use literary devices and even the smallest detail if you think it will drive the story. Using descriptive language can further help to a great extent as it will give your audience a visual representation of everything that is going on in the story.

A good story writer knows when to drop the curtains for the readers. Similarly, if you want to write a good story, you must know when to wrap it up. You must have seen an open ending in many writings; that is also an option you can choose. Remember that you need not always provide a very pleasant ending or the ending that your audience might expect. You are free to end the story according to your discretion. The only thing you will have to bear in mind is to give the story the ending it deserves.

When you sit down to write a story based on something that you have been thinking about for a long time now or just for the sake of it, the first thing you can do is brainstorm your ideas and pen your thoughts on a piece of paper or a notepad. Once you have noted down all of your ideas, here is how you can start structuring your story.

Who are your characters?

This is one of the most influential parts of the story. The diversity of your characters and the way you describe their characteristics will decide your reader’s interest in your story. Introducing the characters can be done in different ways – you can tell the entire story from one of the character’s point of view, include dialogues between various characters or even have a narrator introduce the characters and provide their background information.

Imperfect Character

No person is perfect, and neither should your character in a story. An imperfect character draws much more attention than a perfect character. Even a character who seems to be perfect will have a character flaw.

Vices of Character

Every person is made of virtues and vices, and that’s the reason most writers often choose their main characters to have vices that bring about their downfall or struggles that make their journey more interesting. By including the vices and the struggles of the character, the author can keep the readers glued till the very end. Suppose a character is arrogant, and that’s what causes his/her downfall, or a character struggles throughout the story to achieve the one thing that he/she wants. So if you want your story to capture the attention of the readers, then including vices or struggles can give you that edge.

Where is the story taking place?

Have you come across stories where the scene takes place on a stormy night, or the entire setting belongs to a particular period in history? While writing a story, you have to decide where you want your story to take place. After all, the atmosphere of a place can set the story’s tone.

For instance, if the setting of the story is a dilapidated and abandoned house, the reader will immediately feel a chill down the spine as it seems eerie, and what happens next is totally unexpected. On the other hand, if you set your story in a calm locality with children playing around riding bicycles and old people walking down the street holding hands, it would give the reader a very pleasant outlook and make the reader feel extremely relaxed and comfortable.

What is happening in the story?

Describe the environment and everything that is going on in the story. The way you portray each and every occurrence will give the readers a clear picture of what is happening. You ought to get the readers to feel one among the characters in the story; in other words, feel as if they are in the setting along with the characters and seeing everything around in person. This will kindle your story’s success.

How does your story end?

The ending of the story is as important as the beginning. You can end your story in a happy or sad tone. Your story can even have a cliffhanger which might make it all the more exciting and leave it to the reader’s imagination. In case you are planning to write a sequel to the story, a cliffhanger is the best way to end the story as it will have the reader expecting one.

  • Drafts are always the best way to start writing your story as they will help you to edit and recompile until you are content with your storyline.
  • The title of the story is an important part. It can be said that the title is what your audience would check out first and the factor that would drive them to make their choice to read the story. So, always try to use a title that would catch your readers’ eye in the very first instance.
  • Make sure you include and make effective use of the different components of a story and the elements of the plot.
  • Your language and tone matters more than you imagine. Choose your words and structure your sentences carefully.
  • It is not necessary that you include dialogues, but including them will definitely give the reader a subjective perspective of the happenings in the story.
  • If you are planning to use a narrator in the story, make sure to provide vivid descriptions so that your audience can experience the story.
  • Create situations in the story where the main characters have to move out of their comfort zones to solve the conflict or problem they are facing.
  • The theme of the story is also one of the factors that would interest your readers, so choose a theme that you think would make your readers want to read your story.
  • Weave your storyline in such a way that every little detail adds to the essence of the story and leaves your readers looking forward to more such stories from you.
  • Once the story is complete, you can either ask someone to give you their feedback on it or give it to someone to proofread. This is totally optional. If you feel satisfied with the outcome of the story, you could present it confidently to your audience without a second thought.

The Perfect Twig

Walking through the forest, I came across a little bird that enjoyed flying from one tree to another. He seemed to be looking for something. I stood there observing him. I wished to help him but I did not know what he was looking for. I did not want to scare him away or disturb him either.

Finally, he alighted to pick up a particular Y-shaped twig. I followed him to see where he was headed to and I found him on one of the most beautifully blossomed trees. It was the last thing that was required to complete the nest and it fit perfectly well.

Seeing this, I walked away happily thinking to myself how many people shoo away birds as soon as they catch sight of them. And, I was just glad I didn’t do it, because if I did, the bird would not have found that perfect twig.

I thought it was in some kind of pain as it started making squeaky and strange sounds. Then it moved toward the window and its face broke into a smile. I looked out too and saw flashes of light in the sky. The alien started jumping up and down. The lights in the sky came nearer and nearer. I saw myself looking in a spaceship.

The alien rushed out through my window towards the spaceship. There was a loud deafening sound with which the spaceship took off. I didn’t want my friend to leave so fast and I jumped to get hold of one of the wheels of the spaceship, and there was a loud thud. My eyes opened and I found myself on floor. It was then, that I realized that it was all a dream.

This kind of treatment made Raju a rebellion and a sullen child. He sat all day stone-faced and didn’t mingle with anyone. When the prison counselor came for his routine visit, Raju requested him that he wanted to learn French. The counselor was happy because finally Raju had shown interest in something. It was a bright and perfect day to read a book and relax. The work in the office had been so challenging that I decided to make use of the wonderful bright spring morning. I pulled out the garden chair and sat under the shady banyan tree that stood in the corner of our yard.

Settling down in the chair, I started reading the fiction novel that I had been wanting to read for a long time. I was through with almost 20 pages, when I heard a loud thud, few meters away from me. I turned to my right and saw a dirty black bag. I stood up and looked out onto the street and saw a middle aged man pedaling his bicycle fast as if trying to get away. I called out to him, but he pedaled even faster. Seeing him go, caused panic in me and turned back and looked at the stuffed, black bag. So many thoughts flashed through my mind. I called out to my parents, sensing the panic in my voice. They rushed out immediately and stopped short, when they saw the bag. I narrated what happened. Slowly, I realized that our yard was full of people. Our neighbors, passerby etc. all gathered around the bag, looking fearfully at it. Someone called the police and they reached within 15 minutes. They cordoned off the area, they too looked fearfully at the bag. Opinions were flying in the air,” It’s a bag with a bomb I’m sure.” “Strain your ears, you can definitely hear the clock ticking”. “Look at those wet patches. I’ m sure it’s a body chopped into pieces by a murderer and he disposed it in this manner.” . . . . . . . 

So many speculations and so many hypotheses made the seen tense.

Soon the bomb squad reached with sniffer dog. The police evacuated the area and two policemen ran the metal detector all around the bag. Not a beep was heard or lights flashed. The men from the squad lifted the bag and opened the zipper; the entire crowd was still as if not breathing. The police personnel opened the bag and held it up and turned it over out and tumbled a whole lot of dirty old clothes. The crowd erupted into loud talks, laughter (of relief) and some were even angry as they had been disturbed from the schedule, just to see a bag full of dirty clothes. . . . . . . . .

We always have a good laugh thinking of all the commotion over a bag of dirty clothes.

Question 10. Complete the story, in about 150-200 words, with the ending “. . . . from that day onwards, I never  went  out alone.” Use the given hints.

Tainy day—alone at home—lightning and thunder—lights go out—phone lines dead—knocking on the door.

It was a rainy day. It felt as if the heaven’s flood gates had opened and it was pouring without a stop. I was all alone at home. Mom, dad and my brother had gone for an appointment with the doctor. The appointment was prefixed at 7:00 p.m. They told me that they would be back latest by 9:00 p.m. I kept myself busy watching my favorite serials even though there were some evil scary thoughts playing behind in the back of my head. The peal of thunder and the flashes of lightning were scaring me, but I put up a brave front by turning the sound of the television high so as to drown the sound of thunder. The phone rang, it startled me, but I was glad to hear the comforting sound of my mom. She said the traffic on the road was heavy due to waterlogging in certain areas. “Latest by 9:30 p.m., we should be home”. My eyes kept glancing at the clock on the wall. It would take 30 minutes for them to reach home. I consoled myself.

All this fear and anxiety made me hungry. I grabbed a packet of chip and started munching on them. All of a sudden, I saw a flash of lightning. It was so bright, felt like it struck in our yard. It was followed by a ear-deafening peal of thunder. All the lights of the house went out. It was pitch dark both inside and outside the house. All I could see was the shadows of branches of Moringa tree on the curtain. I was really scared sitting in the pitch darkness. I groped for the phone but it seemed dead. I thought someone has knocking the door grew louder and persistent.

With shaky, thin voice I almost blurted out,”Who’s there?”. “Mihika open the door, it’s me Leela aunty “. Leela aunty’s sound felt like an angelic chorus. I ran to the door almost tripping over the chairs and falling down. I opened the door and flung myself at her. She hugged me tight and told me that mom had called her to check on me as the phone lines were dead. Seeing my disheveled plight and my tearful face, she took me over to her house, so that I could be there till my parents got home.

QUESTION 11. Two friends were passing through a dense forest. Suddenly they heard some animal screaming… Complete the story in 150-200 words.

Answer –    They froze in fear, but when the sound persisted, they decided to help the stricken beast, even at the risk of their own lives. They walked towards the direction of the sound, arming themselves with staves made from tree branches. The rest of the forest was still, and only the monkeys overhead were chattering. Imagine their surprise when the friends discovered that the agonizing sounds were the work of a little herder and his friends. They were from the village nearby and this was their form of recreation every afternoon. Imitating jungle sounds to perfection was a game they played in the afternoon.

To make amends, the boys decided to entertain their guests by imitating the chattering of monkeys, the call of the koyal, the sound of gurgling water and even the whistling of the breeze.

As the two friends turned to leave, the cowherd party regaled them with a spine chilling tiger roar. This time the friends knew better. They yelled back a friendly farewell saying:  See you soon …

                     The money I had received on my 14th birthday, sufficed to buy the complete Harry Potter series. I started reading volume I. I carried the book to school and showed it around on the school bus. When we reached school and began asking for the book, no one owned up to having it.

I decided to put up a notice on the notice board and offered the finder a handsome treat of a double ice cream and cold drinks alongside.

On the second day, a junior from the NCC squad walked up with the hook. He had found it thrown in the bushes behind the school garden. 1 thanked the boy very much and kept my promise. My week’s pocket money was gone in treating hint. I felt a sense of relief as I put the book safely back in my school bag.

For the first time I realized what it feels to lose something that is dear to oneself.

I realized soon the runners had picked up speed and were outracing me. I pulled my muscles taut, gritted my teeth and fought off the painful sensation in my legs. The finishing line was a blur as I remember dropping to the ground at the rope.

When I came to my senses, I could hear someone saying…”Ultimately he won it and he was determined to accomplish his mission.”

                  We went to the local Auchandi Fair at the Mela Grounds. There were live performances and even exhibitions of prized animals. The weather was fine and the singer had everyone dancing to his lively numbers. Suddenly it started raining and thunder rumbled. The animals, frightened by the streaks of lightning and the roar of thunder, broke Mole and began to run wildly all over the grounds. The elephants began trumpeting; the horses galloped and trembled in fear. The music was totally drowned in this cacophony and a stampede resulted. The orchestra deserted, and the singer was left alone on the stage.

I had never witnessed such a fiasco in my life. The police arrived, whisked away the singer and restored order all around.

Answer- MY FIRST JOB

                 I was scared but eager to land my first job as a cub reporter in a children’s newspaper.

I dressed carefully for the interview and reached on time. On the threshold itself, my throat felt dry and my hands shook slightly as I turned the doorknob. But when the interview board of six people, welcomed me warmly, my fears vanished. I felt composed as I was well prepared.

The board sifted through my file of write-ups. They invited me to join a group discussion on whether schools should give homework. I argued vehemently in favor, countermanding the board’s stock suggestions about burdening children, making parents into homework writing machines and children inattentive in class The Board seemed satisfied wills my refutations in favor of giving homework.

In the end, I felt a palpable air of satisfaction all around. Thus, when their final approval accepting me as a cub reporter arrived, I was raring to take off on my new assignment.

One day, he told his grandmother how they had begun learning computers at school. Grandmother was interested and wanted to learn how to send emails to her children and her relatives.

When her grandson offered to teach her, she was hesitant and mid her eyes would not stand the strain of looking at a computer screen for long. But he argued that if her eyes could watch television, they were good enough to stare at a computer screen. Grandmother relented and learned to type, manipulate the mouse and click on various icons. The thrilling moment came when she was able to send a Baisakhi greeting to her sons in the town. The flood of compliments that followed nearly crashed her computer. It was a small revolution and her grandson had made it happen.

           As the school bus came on the main road, I saw a huge crowd running in our direction. The driver of our bus braked at sight of the oncoming crowd. The people were furiously waving their hands and gesturing to the driver to stop the bus. Soon a police inspector arrived and asked the bus driver to take the bus to the curb. Inside the bus, everyone had left their scats and were craning out of the windows. On inquiry from the people nearby we learned that there had been a major accident on one of the metro station construction sites. An under-construction bridge had collapsed and a large slab of concrete had collapsed, caving in the roof of a moving bus, causing fatalities.

Before long, the sirens of ambulances screeched all around. Volunteers from nearby began to help in carrying the injured into waiting ambulances. The local minister himself joined the rescue work. Naturally, we students, could not remain inactive any longer. With the help of our teachers, we formed groups and under the direction of the local policeman, began to divert the traffic so that a traffic jam could be averted.

1. “the lost key”.

It was a hot summer day and Sarah had just arrived home from school. She reached into her bag for her house key, but it wasn’t there. She searched her bag frantically, but the key was nowhere to be found. Panic set in as she realized she was locked out of her own home.

She sat on the front porch, wondering what to do. Suddenly, she saw a piece of paper on the ground. It was a map, with a message that read, “Find the key to unlock your fate.” Intrigued, Sarah followed the map, which led her on a wild adventure through the city.

She encountered various obstacles along the way, but with determination and quick thinking, she overcame each one. Finally, she arrived at a mysterious house at the edge of town. The door was unlocked, and inside, she found a key that matched the one to her own home.

As Sarah used the key to unlock her front door, she realized that the adventure had taught her a valuable lesson. Sometimes, in order to find what we’re looking for, we have to be open to new experiences and take risks.

2. “The New Student”

It was the first day of school, and everyone was excited to meet the new student. His name was Max, and he had just moved to town with his family. Max was shy and reserved, but he had a passion for art.

The other students were curious about Max, and they tried to make him feel welcome. But Max kept to himself, lost in his own thoughts. One day, Sarah, the class president, noticed Max drawing in his notebook during lunch. She asked to see his drawing, and was blown away by his talent.

Sarah decided to organize an art show at school, and invited Max to display his work. Max was hesitant at first, but eventually agreed. The day of the art show arrived, and Max’s paintings were the talk of the school. Everyone was amazed by his talent, and Max finally started to open up.

As the school year progressed, Max became more confident and made friends with his classmates. He realized that he didn’t have to hide his talent or his personality, and that it was okay to be himself.

The art show had brought the school together, and everyone learned that sometimes, all it takes is a little effort to make a new student feel welcome.

Conclusion On Story Writing For Class 9

In “The Lost Key”, Sarah’s adventure taught her the valuable lesson of being open to new experiences and taking risks. Meanwhile, in “The New Student”, Max’s talent for art brought the school together and taught everyone the importance of making new students feel welcome. What is Story writing?

“Story writing is an art, which can be perfected only with practice.”

If you want to write a good story, one must have the whole plot clear in one’s mind. Or else, one is likely to repeat or omit items, or for that matter, dwell on unimportant details and fail to emphasise the important ones.

How to write a story in English

  • The beginning or middle of the story is given. The student is required to complete it on his own using his imagination and supply a suitable heading to it.
  • Hints of the story are given and the student is required to elaborate the hints and shape them up into a complete story , providing connectivity.
  • Some words and phrases are provided and the student is required to develop a story using those words.
  • Sometimes the end of the story is given. The student is required to provide a suitable beginning as well as complete it.
  • Sometimes the end of the story is given. The student is required to write a story based on the visual.
  • One can make use of graphic organisers to construct a story.
  • Even the most popular stories can be twisted to have a surprising end.
  • Try building a story in the form of a flow-chart, events-chart or story-map . You’ll find it enjoyable.

Tips for writing a good story

  • Before beginning to write, form a clear idea about the plot. You must know how the story is going to unfold and ultimately end . If you can start well and end well, your story will certainly be a good one.
  • Adhere to the outline given, i.e., neither omit any point nor distort the order of the points given in the outline.
  • Connect the points in such a manner as to come up with a coherent composition. Or else, the unity in the story as one whole will be lost.
  • You may insert dialogues wherever possible. certainly, make the story interesting .
  • These dialogues should be short, lively and interesting.
  • Given names to characters. Even animals can have names. These names should be short and interesting.
  • Let your story not be unduly long . Adhere to the word limit, if prescribed.
  • The importance of the conclusion cannot be overlooked . It leaves a lasting impact on the reader.
  • Give a suitable title to the story . You may name it after the main character, object incident or proverb/quotation.
  • Write the story in the past tense.
  • Use short sentences to write your story. Remember, If you write long winding sentences, the meaning of what you want to convey, might be lost.
  • Do not use slang . We do not write the way we speak.
  • Go through your story. This will help you to refine it. Omit all unnecessary details.
  • Edit the mistakes in punctuation, grammar, and spelling. 

Stories are written either in the first person; or, as a third-person account with or without dialogues.

When they reached a town, he sent one of them to bring food from the market. In his absence, the other two decide to kill him upon his return from the city and divide the gold equally among themselves.

The third man was also no less greedy than the rest. He poisoned the food to kill them as he wanted to get all the gold. As soon as that person from the city came, the other two killed him. But he too died after eating poisoned food.

I was reading a book when I noticed some kind of movement outside the window. I opened the windowto check what it was and to my amazement, it was a tiny funny looking creature with blinking antennas on the top of his head. I suddenly realised that I was staring at an alien. I was trying to decided how I could communicate with it. I smiled at it and gestured at it to come in. It came into the room and was staring at the things in the room. It traced its long slender finger on the things in my room and the pictures on the wall, leaving a fluorescent glow wherever it touched. I couldn’t conjour  any way to communicate with it.

It kept looking around as if trying to find something. I offered a packet of biscuits, I had in my room. It understood the sign language, popped few biscuits in its mouth and his whole face began to flash into several colourful flashes of light. It vaguely gestured towards me. I thought it was in some kind of pain as it started making squeaky and strange sounds. Then it moved toward the window and its face broke into a smile. I looked out too and saw flashes of light in the sky. The alien started jumping up and down. The lights in the sky came nearer and nearer. I saw myself looking in a spaceship.

The alien rushed out through my window towards the spaceship. There was a loud deafening sound with which the spaceship took off. I didn’t want my friend to leave so fast and I jumped to get hold of one of the wheels of the spaceship, and there was a loud thud. My eyes opened and I found myself on floor. It was then, that I realised that it was all a dream.

It was really hot and humid last night. I slept with the windows open. Around 2:00 a.m. I heard a slight shuffling sound in my room. I slightly raised my head and in the moonlight, I got a faint glimpse of a man entering my room through the open window. He shown a torch on me. I pretended to be in a deep sleep but my heart was thundering. I was scared he would hear it beat. Convinced that I was asleep, he moved toward my cupboard. I gathered courage and decided I just couldn’t lie there doing nothing. My phone was on the bed, next to me. I stealthily gave a number of miss calls to my dad. My father was perturbed but knew something was amiss. He, along with my elder brother, came to my room. Hearing  the door open, the robber tried to dash and escape through the open window. As he ran, I stuck my leg out, and he tripped and fell face down hard on the floor. Immediately, the three of us literally pounced on him and overpowered him after some struggle. We tied him up and rang for the police. The night patrol police were nearby. They came and we handed over the robber to them.

My family was happy that I reacted to the scary situation boldly and did the right thing.

Raju was a little boy, who was born in a very poor family. He loved to go to school, but the financial status at home was so poor, the school was a dream. He resorted to small thefts and pickpocketing to earn money. One day, he was caught in the act of pickpocketing and the court punished him and he was sent away to a juvenile remand home. There, all the boys were forced to learn, and Raju hated it because he no longer wished to study. The tutor would cane the boys for every other word they spoke wrong.

This kind of treatment made Raju a rebellion and a sullen child. He sat all day stone-faced and didn’t mingle with anyone. One day, during the recreation hour, there was a French movie on the TV Initially, he didn’t seem to be interested but slowly the movie and the language began to interest him. When  the prison counsellor came for his routine visit, Raju requested him that he wanted to learn French. The counsellor was happy because finally Raju had shown interest in something. He made arrangements for French classes and eventually, Raju passed the exam of advanced level of French Language. When his term ended in the juvenile home, he secured a certificate in French and a license as a certificate guide. Today, he is seen at the Embassy of France waiting to give French tourist, a guided tour of the city. He earns his living decently and is an inspiration of many.

Two friends were passing through a dense forest. They were almost reaching the area that was pre-decided that they would camp for the night. Suddenly, the stillness of the forest was broken by the painful bellow of a buck. It was a sound that distinctively told us that the animal was in a lot of pain. Cautiously, we approached the sound and was shocked to see a buck lying writhing in pain on the forest floor. Its horns were entangled in steel wires left behind by champers/ trekkers and every movement it made us causing the wires to tighten more around, its horns and now it was twisting about its neck. Seeing us approach, the buck panicked and struggled harder. We were confused and shocked  for a moment, but knew we had to react fast otherwise we would witness a poor animal strangle to death due to a major carelessness of humans like us. Harry sprung into action. He was a fire fighter but both of us didn’t have any experience in such a situation. We knew a kick from the buck could hurtle us in air and we could be seriously injured. Harry emptied the champing bag and took out the rope that was to secure our tent. We slowly threw the rope around it and nudged it and pushed it to lie on the ground. After running about 50 metre, it turned back and looked at us as if to say a thank you and then it vanished into the dense forest.

Mathematics was his favourite subject and he could not bear to anything below a centum. He finished the paper 10 minutes before time. He revised all the questions and the solutions he had worked out. The paper was done and he walked out of the examination hall relieved, but his head hung in shame, thinking how careless he had been. Vasudha ma’am was waiting for him in the reception area. The  first thing she told him when she saw him was,”Ravi I knew you’d be able to solve the paper”. He was happy that his teacher had so much trust in him and understood his potential.

Mom and dad were shocked but only said,”Overconfident precedes carelessness”.

I turned to my right and saw a dirty black bag. I stood up and looked out on to the street and saw a middle aged man pedalling his bicycle fast as if trying to get away. I called out to him, but he pedalled even faster. Seeing him go, caused panic in me and  turned back and looked at the stuffed, black bag. So many thoughts flashed through my mind. I called out to my parents, sensing the panic in my voice. They rushed out immediately and stopped short, when they saw the bag. I narrated what happened. Slowly, I realised that our yard was full of people. Our neighbours, passerby etc. all gathered around the bag, looking fearfully at it. Someone called the police and they reached within 15 minutes. They cordoned off the area, they too looked fearfully at the bag. Opinions were flying in the air,” It’s a bag with a bomb I’m sure.” “Strain your ears, you can definitely hear the clock ticking”. “Look at those wet patches. I’ m sure it’s a body chopped into pieces by a murderer and he disposed it in this manner.” . . . . . . . 

So many speculations and so many hypotheses made the seen tense.

Soon the bomb squad reached with sniffer dog. The police evacuated the area and two policemen ran the metal detector all around the bag. Not a beep was heard or lights flashed. The men from the squad lifted the bag and opened the zipper; the entire crowd was still as if not breathing. The police personnel opened the bag and held it up and turned it over-out and tumbled a whole lot of dirty old clothes. The crowd erupted into loud talks, laughter (of relief) and some were even angry as they had been disturbed from the schedule, just to see a bag full of dirty clothes. . . . . . .  . .

We always have a good laugh thinking of all the commotion over a bag of dirty clothes.

The phone rang, it startled me, but I was glad to hear the comforting sound of my mom. She said the traffic on the road was heavy due to water logging in certain areas. “Latest by 9:30 p.m., we should be home”. My eyes kept glancing at the clock on the wall. It would take 30 minutes for them to reach home. I consoled myself.

All this fear and anxiety made me hungry. I grabbed a packet of chip and started munching on them. All of a sudden, I saw a flash of lightning. It was so bright, felt like it struck in our yard. It was followed by a ear-deafening peal of thunder. All the lights of the house went out. It was pitch dark both inside and outside the house. All I could see was the shadows of branches of Moringa tree on the curtain. I was really scared sitting in the pitch darkness. I gropped for the phone but it seemed dead. I  thought someone has knocking the door grew louder and persistant.

With shaky, thin voice I almost blurted out,”Who’s there?”. “Mihika open the door, it’s me Leela aunty “. Leela aunty’s sound felt like an angelic chorus. I ran to the door almost tripping over the chairs and falling down. I opened the door and flung myself at her. She hugged me tight and told me that mom had called her to check on me as the phone lines were dead. Seeing my disheveled plight and my tearful face, she took me over to her house, so that I could be there till my parents got home.

                   The marathon was a week away. The leg plaster had come off but I was using crutches. Since it was for a charitable cause 1 was determined to contribute to it. Friends were sympathetic and tried to dissuade me. As a rebellious teenager, I refused to follow sound advice and willed myself to take a few short steps. Oh how the pain shot through my leg! I had managed to hobble to the door. Next day, my trainer arrived to coach me and by the day of the marathon. I felt well prepared. The race took off to an uneventful start but by mid-morning, the heat was oppressive. I remained calm although the leg was beginning to hurt a bit. I realized soon the runners had picked up speed and were outracing me. I pulled my muscles taut, gritted my teeth and fought off the painful sensation in my legs.                    We went to the local Auchandi Fair at the Mela Grounds. There were live performances and even exhibitions of prized animals. The star attraction at the fair was a performance by a Bollywood playback singer. There was an animal show in the neighbouring stall, but the singer was still the largest crowd puller.

The weather was fine and the singer had everyone dancing to his lively numbers. Suddenly it started raining and thunder rumbled. The animals, frightened by the streaks of lightning and the roar of thunder, broke Mole and began to run wildly all over the grounds. The elephants began trumpeting; the horses galloped and trembled in fear. The music was totally drowned in this cacophony and a stampede resulted. The orchestra deserted, and the singer was left alone on the stage.

I had never witnessed such a fiasco in my life. The police arrived, whisked away the singer and restored order all around.

Answer-                              MY FIRST JOB

                  I was scared but eager to land my first job as a cub reporter in a children’s newspaper.

I dressed carefully for the interview and reached on time. On the threshold itself, my throat felt dry and my hands shook slightly as I turned the door knob. But when the interview board of six people, welcomed me warmly, my fears vanished. I felt composed as I was well prepared.

The board sifted through my file of write-ups. They invited me to join a group discussion on whether schools should give homework. I argued vehemently in favour, countermanding the board’s stock suggestions about burdening children, making parents into homework writing machines and children inattentive in class The Board seemed satisfied wills my refutations in favour of giving homework.

In the end, I felt a palpable air of satisfaction all around. Thus, when their final approval accepting me as a cub reporter arrived, I was raring to take off on my new assignment.

On the way, the duo exchanged greetings with shopkeepers, stale chapattis to stray animals and talked about events both local and international. One day, he told his grandmother how they had begun learning computers at school. Grandmother was interested and wanted to learn how to send mails to her children and her relatives.

When her grandson offered to teach her, she was hesitant and mid her eyes would not stand the strain of looking at a computer screen for long. But he argued that if her eyes could watch television, they were good enough to stare at a computer screen. Grandmother relented and learnt to type, manipulate the mouse and click on various icons. The thrilling moment came when she was able to send a Baisakhi greeting to her sons in the town. The flood of compliments that followed nearly crashed her computer. It was a small revolution and her grandson had made it happen.

            As the school bus came on the main road, I saw a huge crowd running in our direction. The driver of our bus braked at sight of the oncoming crowd. The people were furiously waving their hands and gesturing to the driver to stop the bus. Soon a police inspector arrived and asked the bus driver to take the bus to the kerb. Inside the bus, everyone had left their scats and were craning out of the windows. On enquiry from the people nearby we learnt that there had been a major accident on one of the metro station construction sites. An under-construction bridge had collapsed and a large slab of concrete had collapsed, caving in the roof of a moving bus, causing fatalities.

Before long, the sirens of ambulances screeched all around. Volunteers from nearby began to help in carrying the injured into waiting ambulances. The local minister himself joined the rescue work. Naturally, we students, could not remain inactive any longer. With the help of our teachers, we formed groups and under the direction of the local policeman, began to divert the traffic so that a traffic jam could be averted.

Students in a Seattle English class were told that their love of reading and writing is a characteristic of “white supremacy,” in the latest Seattle Public Schools high school controversy. The lesson plan has one local father speaking out, calling it “educational malpractice.”

As part of the Black Lives Matter at School Week, World Literature and Composition students at Lincoln High School were given a handout with definitions of the “9 characteristics of white supremacy,” according to the father of a student. Given the subject matter of the class, the father found it odd this particular lesson was brought up.

The Seattle high schoolers were told that “Worship of the Written Word” is white supremacy because it is “an erasure of the wide range of ways we communicate with each other.” By this definition, the very subject of World Literature and Composition is racist. It also chides the idea that we hyper-value written communication because it’s a form of “honoring only what is written and even then only what is written to a narrow standard, full of misinformation and lies.” The worksheet does not provide any context for what it actually means.

“I feel bad for any students who actually internalize stuff like this as it is setting them up for failure,” the father explained to the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH.

Everything is ‘white supremacy’ at Seattle Public Schools

The father asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution against his child by Seattle Public Schools. He said the other pieces of the worksheet were equally disturbing.

The worksheet labels “objectivity,” “individualism,” and “perfectionism” as white supremacy. If students deny their own racism — or that any of the nine characteristics are legitimately racist — is also white supremacy. Denialism or being overly defensive is a racist example of an “entitlement to name what is an [sic] isn’t racism and that those with power have a right to be shielded from the stresses of antiracist work.”

The father argues the concepts are “incoherent and cannot stand any sort of reasoned analysis.” And he notes that it’s set up to ensure students accept every concept without ever questioning the claims.

“How is a 15-year-old kid supposed to object in class when ‘denial and defensiveness’ is itself a characteristic of white supremacy? This is truly educational malpractice.”

White students told to apologize in yet another Seattle high school controversy

Another aspect of the white supremacy lesson at this Seattle school involved a video titled “Getting Called Out: How to Apologize” by Franchesca Ramsey. It’s reportedly presented in the context of white students expressing what the teacher views as “white supremacy.”

“Getting called out, in this context of this video, is when you say or do something that upholds the oppression of a marginalized group of people,” Ramsey says.

Ramsey says her advice is about becoming an ally and “doing the right thing.” She explains you shouldn’t “get defensive” by denying you’re oppressing marginalized people, even if you’re not actually oppressing marginalized people.

“What you really need to do is listen because this is where the other person is hopefully going to explain to you what you did wrong and how you can explain it,” she says.

In the context of the worksheet on white supremacy, it seems clear that students must merely accept that they are upholding oppression. Using the worksheet, if a student defends independence or a love of reading and writing, that student is supposed to accept that it’s white supremacist thinking and stop acting independently or loving to read and write.

Father says Seattle Public Schools isn’t serving students

The father says he taught his son to be on the lookout for this kind of Radical Left indoctrination. It’s why his son flagged the worksheets to him. But he notes that the curriculum doesn’t exactly help his kid on the subject he’s supposed to be learning.

“My problem with this curriculum is that this is supposed to be a writing and literature class and lessons like these do nothing to help my kid become a better writer,” the father explained. “I’m sure Lincoln administration will point to the high ELA proficiency scores but the high proportion of HCC [highly capable] kids (40% of the student body) is a big factor. With so many smart, hard working kids (white supremacists) it’s easy to support these luxury beliefs but system-wide only 63% of kids are proficient in English. Is this really the best use of class time? ”

The father also wonders how many students will fall for this toxic thinking across Seattle schools where concepts around white supremacy are so clearly partisan.

“I feel bad for any students who actually internalize stuff like this as it is setting them up for failure,” he said.

Seattle Public Schools spokespeople provided their normal response to requests for comment: none.
