With my deep interest, I want to pursue the course Finance and Accounting MSc at the University of Brighton because this course has access to modern computing facilities and specialist computing packages. And this course will provide me with the skills to make these investment decisions across various business areas. This degree will give me develop an in-depth knowledge of financial theory and practice, research methods, financial markets, financial accounting and management accounting. Moreover, I found this Finance and Accounting MSc will help me to specialise and meet the growing demand for finance professionals with strong research skills. I can also progress with or continue by studying for a Ph.D. I want to develop my career in this sector and the accounting and financial services sectors require a high level of understanding of theory and practice. And this MSc course can make me professional. I believe that this course will help me become professional and proficient in my future career.

Following my Intermediate and Secondary education from the Business Studies group, I completed my Bachelor’s degree major in Accounting in February 2022 from National University, Gazipur, Bangladesh. In my home country, there are many open places to develop a career in accountancy but they require a professional applicant. From this MSc course, I can meet the growing demand for finance professionals with strong research skills. So, I decided to complete my further higher studies by choosing this Finance and Accounting MSc at the University of Brighton. While studying, I was involved in various co- curricular activities to enrich my knowledge and skills. Attended and organized different types of seminars and workshops, participated in different voluntary services and activities, and actively participated. From my last education qualification, I have realized that I need to gain knowledge about business accounting and finance part as well as I want to grow my career in this area. I also have my English language concern and I attend a UKVI IELTS test where my overall band score is 6.0. I think I should gain more knowledge in the field so I decided to continue my further studies with this course. I am confident that my professional goal makes me a suitable candidate for the course.

This course has been designed to help me develop the necessary skills to solve the financial accounting standards, complex business problems in recent facing situations. Modules on the course involve both taught sessions and guided independent study. The core module units include Economics of Financial Markets, Financial Theory and Practice, Research Methods for Finance and Economics, Dissertation or Work Placement Project. Mandatory specialism modules are- Contemporary Issues in Accounting, International Investment and Trading, Economics of Money, Interest Rates, Banking and Financial Institutions. Completion of my dissertation will teach me the undertake research leading to practicable recommendations based on sound analysis and judgment. All of these modules will help me to broaden my knowledge of accountancy understanding in an international context which will prepare me for my employment in an increasingly internationalized business world. Hopefully, I have been able to clear the purpose of my admission to the university. Moreover, during times of crisis, accountancy is seen as a stable profession. By completing this course, I will be able to work with reputed organisations in my home country ranging from accountancy, banking, financial management, and management consultancy. So, I believe this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives.

UK’s academic reputation is globally renowned and it is known that having a graduate degree from a UK university will definitely propel one’s career to a significant level. However, the study environment in my country follows the theoretical system of education which is quite different and no soft skills are acquired. The UK maintains a quality management system with high standards in all fields. In recent years, all companies in Bangladesh are emphasizing hiring of Bangladeshi graduates with degrees from abroad, as they see the transferrable skills carried forward from the international education will play a key role in transforming their approach to the business and believe these graduates are capable of doing so. The transferable skills from the UK are key to advancing graduates through organizational growth and gaining a competitive advantage. This reason attracted me to pursue a degree in the UK. A recent survey of International Graduation Results in 2019 produced by iGraduate by Universities UK International shows that 82% of international graduates say their UK degree is valuable for financial investment and a similar number of graduates say they are satisfied or very satisfied with their careers. About 83% think a UK degree has helped them get a job. These aspects have driven my ambition to get a degree from a UK institution.

As my study destination is the UK and I wish to study at the University of Brighton, because it offers an experience that goes way beyond the classroom. And by the time I graduate, I’ll feel confident and fully prepared to start my career anywhere in the world. The university puts students on a fast track that is designed to get a postgraduate degree into faster employment with excellent career opportunities. Moreover, the University brings the workplace into classrooms so it will be beneficial for me to attain my personal career objectives by practicing in this type of learning environment. I am looking forward to studying and wish to experience all the opportunities the University of Brighton has to offer.

Why Do You Need a Personal Statement?

A personal statement is a chance for admissions committees to get to know you: your goals and passions, what you’ll bring to the program, and what you’re hoping to get out of the program.  You need to sell the admissions committee on what makes you a worthwhile applicant. The personal statement is a good chance to highlight significant things about you that don’t appear elsewhere on your application.

A personal statement is slightly different from a statement of purpose (also known as a letter of intent). A statement of purpose/letter of intent tends to be more tightly focused on your academic or professional credentials and your future research and/or professional interests.

While a personal statement also addresses your academic experiences and goals, you have more leeway to be a little more, well, personal. In a personal statement, it’s often appropriate to include information on significant life experiences or challenges that aren’t necessarily directly relevant to your field of interest.

Some programs ask for both a personal statement and a statement of purpose/letter of intent. In this case, the personal statement is likely to be much more tightly focused on your life experience and personality assets while the statement of purpose will focus in much more on your academic/research experiences and goals.

However, there’s not always a hard-and-fast demarcation between a personal statement and a statement of purpose. The two statement types should address a lot of the same themes, especially as relates to your future goals and the valuable assets you bring to the program. Some programs will ask for a personal statement but the prompt will be focused primarily on your research and professional experiences and interests. Some will ask for a statement of purpose but the prompt will be more focused on your general life experiences.

When in doubt, give the program what they are asking for in the prompt and don’t get too hung up on whether they call it a personal statement or statement of purpose. You can always call the admissions office to get more clarification on what they want you to address in your admissions essay.

What Makes a Good Grad School Personal Statement?

A great graduate school personal statement can come in many forms and styles. However, strong grad school personal statement examples all share the same following elements:

A Clear Narrative

Above all, a good personal statement communicates clear messages about what makes you a strong applicant who is likely to have success in graduate school. So to that extent, think about a couple of key points that you want to communicate about yourself and then drill down on how you can best communicate those points. (Your key points should of course be related to what you can bring to the field and to the program specifically).

You can also decide whether to address things like setbacks or gaps in your application as part of your narrative. Have a low GPA for a couple semesters due to a health issue? Been out of a job for a while taking care of a family member? If you do decide to explain an issue like this, make sure that the overall arc is more about demonstrating positive qualities like resilience and diligence than about providing excuses.

Specific Examples

A great statement of purpose uses specific examples to illustrate its key messages. This can include anecdotes that demonstrate particular traits or even references to scholars and works that have influenced your academic trajectory to show that you are familiar and insightful about the relevant literature in your field.

Just saying “I love plants,” is pretty vague. Describing how you worked in a plant lab during undergrad and then went home and carefully cultivated your own greenhouse where you cross-bred new flower colors by hand is much more specific and vivid, which makes for better evidence.

A strong personal statement will describe why you are a good fit for the program, and why the program is a good fit for you. It’s important to identify specific things about the program that appeal to you, and how you’ll take advantage of those opportunities. It’s also a good idea to talk about specific professors you might be interested in working with. This shows that you are informed about and genuinely invested in the program.

Strong Writing

Even quantitative and science disciplines typically require some writing, so it’s important that your personal statement shows strong writing skills. Make sure that you are communicating clearly and that you don’t have any grammar and spelling errors. It’s helpful to get other people to read your statement and provide feedback. Plan on going through multiple drafts.

Another important thing here is to avoid cliches and gimmicks. Don’t deploy overused phrases and openings like “ever since I was a child.” Don’t structure your statement in a gimmicky way (i.e., writing a faux legal brief about yourself for a law school statement of purpose). The first will make your writing banal; the second is likely to make you stand out in a bad way.

Appropriate Boundaries

While you can be more personal in a personal statement than in a statement of purpose, it’s important to maintain appropriate boundaries in your writing. Don’t overshare anything too personal about relationships, bodily functions, or illegal activities. Similarly, don’t share anything that makes it seem like you may be out of control, unstable, or an otherwise risky investment. The personal statement is not a confessional booth. If you share inappropriately, you may seem like you have bad judgment, which is a huge red flag to admissions committees.

You should also be careful with how you deploy humor and jokes. Your statement doesn’t have to be totally joyless and serious, but bear in mind that the person reading the statement may not have the same sense of humor as you do. When in doubt, err towards the side of being as inoffensive as possible.

Just as being too intimate in your statement can hurt you, it’s also important not to be overly formal or staid. You should be professional, but conversational.

Graduate School Personal Statement Examples

Sample Personal Statement for Graduate School 1

For this Japanese Studies master’s degree, the applicant had to provide a statement of purpose outlining her academic goals and experience with Japanese and a separate personal statement describing her personal relationship with Japanese Studies and what led her to pursue a master’s degree.

Here’s what’s successful about this personal statement:

• An attention-grabbing beginning: The applicant begins with the statement that Japanese has never come easily to her and that it’s a brutal language to learn. Seeing as how this is an application for a Japanese Studies program, this is an intriguing beginning that makes the reader want to keep going.
• A compelling narrative: From this attention-grabbing beginning, the applicant builds a well-structured and dramatic narrative tracking her engagement with the Japanese language over time. The clear turning point is her experience studying abroad, leading to a resolution in which she has clarity about her plans. Seeing as how the applicant wants to be a translator of Japanese literature, the tight narrative structure here is a great way to show her writing skills.
• Specific examples that show important traits: The applicant clearly communicates both a deep passion for Japanese through examples of her continued engagement with Japanese and her determination and work ethic by highlighting the challenges she’s faced (and overcome) in her study of the language. This gives the impression that she is an engaged and dedicated student.

Overall, this is a very strong statement both in terms of style and content. It flows well, is memorable, and communicates that the applicant would make the most of the graduate school experience.

Sample Personal Statement for Graduate School 2

This personal statement for a Music Composition master’s degree discusses the factors that motivate the applicant to pursue graduate study.

Here’s what works well in this statement:

• The applicant provides two clear reasons motivating the student to pursue graduate study: her experiences with music growing up, and her family’s musical history. She then supports those two reasons with examples and analysis.
• The description of her ancestors’ engagement with music is very compelling and memorable. The applicant paints her own involvement with music as almost inevitable based on her family’s long history with musical pursuits.
• The applicant gives thoughtful analysis of the advantages she has been afforded that have allowed her to study music so extensively. We get the sense that she is insightful and empathetic—qualities that would add greatly to any academic community.

This is a strong, serviceable personal statement. And in truth, given that this for a masters in music composition, other elements of the application (like work samples) are probably the most important.  However, here are two small changes I would make to improve it:

• I would probably to split the massive second paragraph into 2-3 separate paragraphs. I might use one paragraph to orient the reader to the family’s musical history, one paragraph to discuss Giacomo and Antonio, and one paragraph to discuss how the family has influenced the applicant. As it stands, it’s a little unwieldy and the second paragraph doesn’t have a super-clear focus even though it’s all loosely related to the applicant’s family history with music.
• I would also slightly shorten the anecdote about the applicant’s ancestors and expand more on how this family history has motivated the applicant’s interest in music. In what specific ways has her ancestors’ perseverance inspired her? Did she think about them during hard practice sessions? Is she interested in composing music in a style they might have played? More specific examples here would lend greater depth and clarity to the statement.

This is my successful personal statement for Columbia’s Master’s program in Public Health. We’ll do a deep dive on this statement paragraph-by-paragraph in the next section, but I’ll highlight a couple of things that work in this statement here:

• This statement is clearly organized. Almost every paragraph has a distinct focus and message, and when I move on to a new idea, I move on to a new paragraph with a logical transitions.
• This statement covers a lot of ground in a pretty short space. I discuss my family history, my goals, my educational background, and my professional background. But because the paragraphs are organized and I use specific examples, it doesn’t feel too vague or scattered.
• In addition to including information about my personal motivations, like my family, I also include some analysis about tailoring health interventions with my example of the Zande. This is a good way to show off what kinds of insights I might bring to the program based on my academic background.

Grad School Personal Statement Example: Deep Dive

Now let’s do a deep dive, paragraph-by-paragraph, on one of these sample graduate school personal statements. We’ll use my personal statement that I used when I applied to Columbia’s public health program.

Paragraph One: For twenty-three years, my grandmother (a Veterinarian and an Epidemiologist) ran the Communicable Disease Department of a mid-sized urban public health department. The stories of Grandma Betty doggedly tracking down the named sexual partners of the infected are part of our family lore. Grandma Betty would persuade people to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases, encourage safer sexual practices, document the spread of infection and strive to contain and prevent it. Indeed, due to the large gay population in the city where she worked, Grandma Betty was at the forefront of the AIDS crises, and her analysis contributed greatly towards understanding how the disease was contracted and spread. My grandmother has always been a huge inspiration to me, and the reason why a career in public health was always on my radar.

This is an attention-grabbing opening anecdote that avoids most of the usual cliches about childhood dreams and proclivities. This story also subtly shows that I have a sense of public health history, given the significance of the AIDs crisis for public health as a field.

It’s good that I connect this family history to my own interests. However, if I were to revise this paragraph again, I might cut down on some of the detail because when it comes down to it, this story isn’t really about me. It’s important that even (sparingly used) anecdotes about other people ultimately reveal something about you in a personal statement.

Paragraph Two: Recent years have cemented that interest. In January 2012, my parents adopted my little brother Fred from China. Doctors in America subsequently diagnosed Fred with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). My parents were told that if Fred’s condition had been discovered in China, the (very poor) orphanage in which he spent the first 8+ years of his life would have recognized his DMD as a death sentence and denied him sustenance to hasten his demise.

Here’s another compelling anecdote to help explain my interest in public health. This is an appropriately personal detail for a personal statement—it’s a serious thing about my immediate family, but it doesn’t disclose anything that the admissions committee might find concerning or inappropriate.

If I were to take another pass through this paragraph, the main thing I would change is the last phrase. “Denied him sustenance to hasten his demise” is a little flowery. “Denied him food to hasten his death” is actually more powerful because it’s clearer and more direct.

Paragraph Three: It is not right that some people have access to the best doctors and treatment while others have no medical care. I want to pursue an MPH in Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia because studying social factors in health, with a particular focus on socio-health inequities, will prepare me to address these inequities. The interdisciplinary approach of the program appeals to me greatly as I believe interdisciplinary approaches are the most effective way to develop meaningful solutions to complex problems.

In this paragraph I make a neat and clear transition from discussing what sparked my interest in public health and health equity to what I am interested in about Columbia specifically: the interdisciplinary focus of the program, and how that focus will prepare me to solve complex health problems. This paragraph also serves as a good pivot point to start discussing my academic and professional background.

Paragraph Four: My undergraduate education has prepared me well for my chosen career. Understanding the underlying structure of a group’s culture is essential to successfully communicating with the group. In studying folklore and mythology, I’ve learned how to parse the unspoken structures of folk groups, and how those structures can be used to build bridges of understanding. For example, in a culture where most illnesses are believed to be caused by witchcraft, as is the case for the Zande people of central Africa, any successful health intervention or education program would of necessity take into account their very real belief in witchcraft.

In this paragraph, I link my undergraduate education and the skills I learned there to public health. The (very brief) analysis of tailoring health interventions to the Zande is a good way to show insight and show off the competencies I would bring to the program.

Paragraph Five: I now work in the healthcare industry for one of the largest providers of health benefits in the world. In addition to reigniting my passion for data and quantitative analytics, working for this company has immersed me in the business side of healthcare, a critical component of public health.

This brief paragraph highlights my relevant work experience in the healthcare industry. It also allows me to mention my work with data and quantitative analytics, which isn’t necessarily obvious from my academic background, which was primarily based in the social sciences.

Paragraph Six: I intend to pursue a PhD in order to become an expert in how social factors affect health, particularly as related to gender and sexuality. I intend to pursue a certificate in Sexuality, Sexual Health, and Reproduction. Working together with other experts to create effective interventions across cultures and societies, I want to help transform health landscapes both in America and abroad.

This final paragraph is about my future plans and intentions. Unfortunately, it’s a little disjointed, primarily because I discuss goals of pursuing a PhD before I talk about what certificate I want to pursue within the MPH program! Switching those two sentences and discussing my certificate goals within the MPH and then mentioning my PhD plans would make a lot more sense.

I also start two sentences in a row with “I intend,” which is repetitive.

The final sentence is a little bit generic; I might tailor it to specifically discuss a gender and sexual health issue, since that is the primary area of interest I’ve identified.

This was a successful personal statement; I got into (and attended!) the program. It has strong examples, clear organization, and outlines what interests me about the program (its interdisciplinary focus) and what competencies I would bring (a background in cultural analysis and experience with the business side of healthcare). However, a few slight tweaks would elevate this statement to the next level.

However, these are generally strong, serviceable statements that communicate clearly why the student is interested in the field, their skills and competencies, and what about the specific program appeals to them.

However, all of these statements are definitely pushing the boundaries of acceptable length, as all are above 1000 and one is almost 1500 words! Many programs limit you to 500 words; if you don’t have a limit, you should try to keep it to two single-spaced pages at most (which is about 1000 words).

University of Chicago Personal Statement for Graduate School Examples

These examples of successful essays to the University of Chicago law school cover a wide range of life experiences and topics. The writing in all is very vivid, and all communicate clear messages about the students’ strengths and competencies.

Note, however, that these are all essays that specifically worked for University of Chicago law school. That does not mean that they would work everywhere. In fact, one major thing to note is that many of these responses, while well-written and vivid, barely address the students’ interest in law school at all! This is something that might not work well for most graduate programs.

Wheaton College Personal Statement for Graduate School Sample 10

This successful essay for law school from a Wheaton College undergraduate does a great job tracking the student’s interest in the law in a compelling and personal way. Wheaton offers other graduate school personal statement examples, but this one offers the most persuasive case for the students’ competencies. The student accomplishes this by using clear, well-elaborated examples, showing strong and vivid writing, and highlighting positive qualities like an interest in justice and empathy without seeming grandiose or out of touch.

Wheaton College Personal Statement for Graduate School Sample 1

Based on the background information provided at the bottom of the essay, this essay was apparently successful for this applicant. However, I’ve actually included this essay because it demonstrates an extremely risky approach. While this personal statement is strikingly written and the story is very memorable, it could definitely communicate the wrong message to some admissions committees. The student’s decision not to report the drill sergeant may read incredibly poorly to some admissions committees. They may wonder if the student’s failure to report the sergeant’s violence will ultimately expose more soldiers-in-training to the same kinds of abuses. This incident perhaps reads especially poorly in light of the fact that the military has such a notable problem with violence against women being covered up and otherwise mishandled

It’s actually hard to get a complete picture of the student’s true motivations from this essay, and what we have might raise real questions about the student’s character to some admissions committees. This student took a risk and it paid off, but it could have just as easily backfired spectacularly.

The notion of financial risk has always fascinated me. Risk is involved all parts of our life, and learning economic theory and statistics can help mitigate some of the larger financial risks that can massively impact our economy. Since my undergraduate course I have been intrigued by the theoretical side of economics and statistics. I particularly enjoy learning how to project potential outcomes, as this is a vital skill desired by many corporations to strengthen their decision-making processes.

Currently I am in my final year of an Economics undergraduate degree and I am projected to graduate with a first. Modules in Behavioural Economics, Finance and Investment have been a strong interest of mine since the beginning of my degree. I have also enjoyed learning more about economic policies across the globe. In order to keep up to date with the latest economic policies I make sure to follow governmental and news outlets, such as the Financial Times.

In my second year I completed a four-month placement with a national bank. This allowed me to learn more about the practical implications of economic theory in a financially focused setting. I grew very interested in the work of the Risk Manager, who further enlightened me on the many different factors that must be considered before making a major financial decision. The main thing that I enjoyed about financial risk was the tangibility of it. As history has demonstrated, financial decisions can have a major impact on society, both positive and negative. Learning how to restrain negative impacts, and how to manage risks appropriately, intrigues me as an essential part of our modern world.

My third year I spend abroad studying Economics in Australia. I found it particularly interesting to learn the differences between the Australian economic system and the UK’s, which will become increasingly important with the advent of post-Brexit trade deals between the countries. This experience only contributed to my enthusiasm with economic theory as I was able to learn more about its role within other countries.

I have decided to apply for this course because it is one of the finest in the country, with excellent links to industry. To contribute to financial risk management in the way I aspire to, I believe that I need the best education possible. This course not only has a compelling combination of modules and specialisms, but its reputation and research quality will help propel me as a competitive graduate on the job market. I truly believe that with my passion and intrigue in the subject, and this course’s quality resources, this university will be the best place for my studies.

Ever since I discovered my passion for the finance industry at a young age, I have been determined to pursue a career as a financial consultant and advisor. I firmly believe that this course will provide me with the necessary tools and knowledge to achieve my career goals by expanding my understanding of financial products, the intricate workings of financial markets, and investment banking.

I am aware of the university’s ability to equip students with critical analysis skills that are essential for becoming leaders in their chosen sectors. Since my early years, extensive international travel has shaped my perspective on the world, particularly the stark economic contrasts between the ‘Third World’ and the ‘Western World.’ Having the privilege of experiencing different cultures and economies through my parents, who have lived in Africa, Europe, and the USA, I have developed a deep curiosity about the mechanisms that drive global economies. This curiosity has led me to pursue Economics at A Level, as I believe it is at the core of world discussions and can provide a comprehensive understanding of current news articles and their correlation to the subject.

Through my readings, such as Tim Harford’s ‘The Undercover Economist,’ I have come to appreciate the analogy that economics is like engineering, offering insights into how things work and the consequences of changing them. I see economics as an intricate puzzle, requiring economists to integrate economic theories with government policies to solve complex economic problems. Attending conferences at prestigious institutions like the University of Warwick and Oxbridge has broadened my perspective on economics, with theories like Freakonomics intriguing me and sparking a desire to explore the unexpected links between seemingly unrelated phenomena.

My passion for economics is complemented by a strong affinity for mathematics , which has been nurtured since my childhood. From playing mental maths games to tackling complex problem-solving at A Level, I have developed analytical abilities that were put to the test during a taster day at Cass Business School. Through quick thinking and effective teamwork, I excelled in a trading shares simulation, resulting in my group being the most profitable. Furthermore, my participation in a business management enterprise day at the University of the West of England allowed me to showcase my skills, leading to the recognition of the ‘Best Business Idea.’

To gain practical experience in the finance sector, I sought work opportunities that would provide me with invaluable insights. My time at Britannia Building Society exposed me to the inner workings of retail banking, allowing me to shadow the branch manager, work closely with financial planning advisors, and handle transactions at the tills. This experience introduced me to financial assets, including options for investing in bonds, shares, and increasing savings. Additionally, working at Harrison’s Accountancy and Insolvency Agency gave me valuable knowledge about liquidations and insolvencies of businesses, further solidifying my interest in pursuing a career in finance.

Staying updated with current financial affairs is crucial to me, and I regularly read the economy sections of reputable sources such as the BBC website and The Economist. Subscribing to a weekly update from RBS provides me with topical developments in the financial markets. Alongside my commitment to academic and professional pursuits, I have also developed essential skills through my job at O2 Retail. This experience has sharpened my interpersonal skills and honed my ability to negotiate mutually beneficial deals for both customers and the company. As a captain of my football team, I have learned the value of leadership, motivation, and maintaining high team morale, skills that have translated into success in class debates and the trading shares simulation at Cass Business School.

During a recent trip to Switzerland, I had the opportunity to meet with the assistant vice president at Credit Suisse, who shared insights into exchange rate processes within a leading investment bank. These conversations further solidified my understanding of the close relationship between economics and the finance sector.

Through a comprehensive study of Level Economics and practical experiences, I have been able to bridge the gap between theory and real-world situations. Engaging with professionals in the field has deepened my appreciation for the vital connection between economics and finance. I am confident that pursuing a university education will equip me with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the dynamic and fast-paced world of financial markets.

Finance and Investment Personal Statement

Studying finance has always been a goal for me as it consists of elements which I believe pertains to my current skills. Dealing with finances interests me and I’m keen on finding ways to make money go further. Calculating profits and losses are important parts of finance on my course and I have enjoyed making sure this is done accurately. Originally, I took AS level subjects at college but due to extreme health conditions, I was unable to complete them. This didn’t deter me from pursuing my educational aspirations, I transferred to BTEC Level 3 which was more structured towards my goals.

This course has several units which have helped me to realise that I want to study finance at a degree level, units such as unit 3 and unit 5. These units deal with personal finance and business finance on a national and international scale, they are very interesting to me and are easy to understand. Within unit 3, I particularly enjoyed: forecasting cash flows for businesses, learning about break even analysis, analysing statements of comprehensive income and financial positions. The creating and reviewing of these documents developed my enthusiasm for the topic and convinced me that finance was a field that I would want to be involved in. During my educational studies I have acquired important skills which would help me in higher education. For a lot of our presentations we had to work together to contribute to the final work. These skills are applicable to higher education as we will be presented with many group presentations and we will have to work together to be successful. Also for coursework subjects I have been provided with information I have had to evaluate and use to help me analyse a company’s position and recommend improvements. This can be transferred to higher education as there will be considerable information I will come across and have to analyse independently.

This eagerness to study finance led me to carry out work experience in Barclays Bank PLC. As a supervisors assistant I was able to shadow the branch’s head supervisor in his daily dealings such as: sorting out customers queries, transferring money from accounts, cashing up tills and several more things. From my time at Barclays, certain skills were taught to me and others were further developed. When dealing with customers we had to cater for their needs whilst following company regulations, this often required critical thinking as we had to analyse the issue in order to diagnose it. This skill will prepare me for the often demanding thought process which has to be applied when it comes to a degree in finance. I gained employment at Schuh kids at the beginning of the summer of 2017 and here I was thrown into a more independent role where there were financial targets set out for me to reach as an individual. I developed a numerous skills such as time management. As the store was very busy we had to make sure that we provide speedy service whilst still maintain quality service. This skill will be applicable on a degree level as a lot of work will be handed out so I will be able to keep on top of it and make sure it is of a good quality.

During my college experience, I was one of the dance leaders for the dance society and we were tasked with creating routines for the members to learn to perform at school events. This role instilled in me leadership and organisational skills as I had to make sure everyone was aware of the routines and comfortable with them. This skill can be transferred unto degree level as I will be able to take leadership in my studies and group activities, making sure all work is done successfully.

I attended XXXX for Summer School in 2015 and I really enjoyed the international and inclusive community. I will always remember the thermodynamics lectures taught by XXXX, professor in Mechanical Engineering, where he described designing thermo-systems as similar to “walking in a dark cave…using assumptions and mathematical tools to guide us forward.” XXXX also has state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Advanced Financial Technologies Laboratory.  I want to contribute to inventing new machine learning algorithms and predictive software to drive down the cost of making decisions, serving as a consultant with respect to financial markets, agriculture, etc. - an independent consultant who excels at machine learning algorithms and software frameworks, providing his clients with invaluable insights with respect to potential costs and benefits

For a variety of reasons having to do with living in Germany, I wish to transfer to my ideal program, in America, Finance at XXXX University, because it represents all of my new directions and intellectual and social interests. I am no longer a good career fit with the department of industrial engineering at my current university, TU Darmstadt, in Germany. I am very thankful, however, for the great deal that I have learned here, especially about algorithms, statistical learning tools, and applied machine learning. I have found that algorithms can be used to solve a myriad of combinatorial problems such as finding best facility location, data compression, and strategy planning. I appreciate how this becomes increasingly easier to the extent to which the computational power of computers evolves and more efficient algorithms appear. We are soon going to live in a time in which making predictions using machine learning algorithms is very cheap, and such predictions will help corporate and government to reduce potential risks and costs.

I want to explore and invent new prediction tools from scratch, rather than calling written libraries. This is why I hope to continue on in my studies in Finance at some point at the doctoral level. I have participated research in the effect of turbulence on the lift force for 1.5 years. During the course of this research I have mastered the skills of setting up experiment, how to determine the control variables, and how to collect and analyze experiment data. I have been through difficult situations where the data do not fall in the range of our expected values, however me and my supervisor were always working together to find where the problem might arise and redesign the testing apparatus. After 1.5 years of hard work, this research project has turned into a published paper which I had the privilege to put my name on.

First focusing my studies on optics and then industrial engineering, I have experienced success and failure, changes in direction, but could not be more pleased and stable at this time with the balance of my life being dedicated to Finance, which makes all that I have done before relevant, including those endeavors which I have tended to think of as failures over the years, such as designing MATLAB Simulink, designing experiment apparatus, and so forth. I make progress based on failure. I know how to research relevant literature, and make a collection of knowledge for my own use.

A young Syrian man with big dreams, I was born and raised in the UAE; my father has been working here for the past 25 years and is a partner and CEO of a major corporation based in Dubai - a leading property developer. Our family owns property in Dubai as well as St. Kitts and Nevis where we are nationalized. My central professional goal is to become the most successful real estate finance professional possible, trained in the West, based in Dubai. The last time that I visited Syria was in 2010, well before the civil war broke out. At that time, we still owned valuable real estate properties in Syria – most if not all of which have been destroyed. At some point in time when things are calm in Syria and rebuilding is underway, I want to be involved in helping to finance reconstruction, driven most of all by a sense of patriotic and humanitarian calling to the land of my family.

Now, I want to live and learn in London, taking full advantage of the vast international resources of the city in addition to the university. Still 22, my father calls me a young idealist when I talk to him about my dream of helping to rebuild Syria to something like its former glory. Nevertheless, I want to do what I can to help as a finance professional, rebuilding Syria at some point with smart green buildings with sustainable design and architecture.

We in Dubai could not be more excited about having been chosen as the host for EXPO 2020 as this will be an especially valuable opportunity to gain unique experience in design and development on an international level. I hold two Certificates in areas closely related to Finance and I am currently pursuing a third. I completed a market/retail analysis of 3 different malls in the City of Dubai mall complex. This included the world’s biggest mall, The Dubai Mall, and I won the Exceeding Expectations in Critical Thinking Award for this project. As part of the Global Leader Experience Project through Common Purpose , a leadership training program, we visited more than 12 profit and non-profit organizations in Dubai. I will be part of the American University of Sharjah Delegation Team to the Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN2017) to be held in February 2017.

Abigail Johnson

Abigail Johnson is the President of Fidelity Personal, Workplace and Institutional Services. This Fidelity Investments executive is widely considered to be next in line to run the company her grandfather founded in 1946—an assumption she's done nothing to dispel since taking on broader duties at the firm last year and constantly proving herself capable.

Stacy Bash-Polley

Stacy Bash-Polley is a partner and the Managing Director at Goldman Sachs. "When something gets under my skin—and this goes for personal and business situations—I refuse to let myself react right away. No e-mail reply, no phone call, no face to face… nothing for 24 hours, or at least until I've got a handle on my emotions," she says.

Bash-Polley has been a partner at Goldman Sachs since 2004 and a force in fixed income for years prior as one of the highest-grossing associates in the company's history.

She oversees fixed-income sales in the Americas, the unit that contributes the largest portion ($13.7 billion in 2010) of Goldman's revenue, and co-chairs the bank's diversity committee.

The big challenge ahead will be to continue replacing revenue lost to the new Volcker rule restrictions on proprietary trading desks, but we´re confident she´ll deal with it well.

Margaret Keane

Margaret Keane is President and CEO of GE Capital Retail Finance. "In times of transition, people are looking at the top asking, 'Are they confident?' It became apparent to me that even just physically how I came to work—if I was smiling, if I held my head up high—people would notice," she says.

GE Capital put its U.S. credit-card business on the block in late 2007, and Margaret Keane learned on the fly how to keep employees, and customers, at ease during uncertain times.

The sale never happened, but Keane's leadership skills continue to impress everyone around her. Her role at GE Capital was broadened this year to include oversight of the sales finance business and GE Money Bank. She has been making big bets on new mobile applications. She's an active mentor to other women in her organization.

Carla Harris

Carla Harris is the Managing Director at Morgan Stanley. "If you have an agenda for your career, it will keep you from making emotional decisions about your career and it will also guide you with respect to the timing of making career moves or changes. Without one, you will be easily distracted by the external economic environment or the internal political environment around you," she says.

If you don't know the difference between a mentor and a sponsor, you probably don't know Carla Harris, a renowned speaker on career development. She has counseled countless finance professionals on the road to success and she really knows what she´s talking about.

A veteran of Morgan Stanley's M&A and equity syndicate departments, Harris was picked to run the emerging manager platform at Morgan Stanley Investment Management in 2009. This initiative is designed to advise and nurture women- and minority-owned, long-only asset managers.

Barbara Byrne

Barbara Byrne is Vice Chair of Investment Banking at Barclays Capital. "I believe in the power of a team and the creative energy unleashed by different viewpoints. I view conflict as an opportunity and am drawn to addressing it directly and finding workable solutions that move teams forward. A sense of humor goes a long way toward finding common ground," she says.

At Barclays Capital, Barbara Byrne has continued the kind of work that defined her 28-year career at Lehman Brothers. She has had success fomenting close ties with large corporate clients like GE and Hewlett-Packard, and is also a senior statesman for her firm in the civic arena. Byrne plays a key role in recruiting at Barclays and champions its Women's Initiatives Network, and has many years left in her.

Ruth Porat is CFO at Morgan Stanley. One of the company´s priorities heading into 2011 was to unwind an expensive arrangement it struck in a moment of weakness, when it sold an $8 billion preferred-share stake to Mitsubishi UJF during the 2008 credit crisis.

Leading Morgan out of the morass was Porat, who helped negotiate a stock conversion that netted Mitsubishi a $2 billion premium and relieved Morgan of a $787 million annual dividend burden, while shoring up the firm's Tier 1 capital ratio.

Being a top dealmaker and keeping an eye on capital exposure is what has earned Porat one of the highest profiles on Wall Street. It´s allowed her to prosper in a role that has not been especially kind to other women in financial services (see Sallie Krawcheck at Citigroup, Erin Callahan at Lehman). She is additionally becoming heavily involved in policy issues as one of 14 members of the U.S. Treasury's borrowing advisory committee.

Val Soranno-Keating

Val Soranno-Keating is CEO of Barclaycard. "Resist the temptation to hire in your own image. Teams with the broadest diversity in thinking and experiences are, by far, the most powerful," says Soranno Keating.

Barclaycard was the No. 3 credit-card issuer in the U.K. when Val Soranno-Keating took over as CEO in November 2009. Now it's in the No. 1 slot, and processes $320 billion in annual payment volume. It´s been smartly propelled by new innovations in loyalty programs, small-business products, and online and mobile payment services.

The pretax profit in the first half of 2011 jumped 65 percent from the same period last year, in the most part as a result of acquisitions like the Egg Credit Card portfolio in the U.K. and the MBNA small-business credit card portfolio.

A new point-of-sale redemption program in the U.K. and a stateside partnership with card rewards marketer Cartera Commerce has increased loyalty enrollment to the sound of more than 3 million.

Last May, Soranno-Keating, a former American Express executive, led Barclaycard into partnership. The result was the U.K.'s first payment-enabled mobile phone.

Nicole Arnaboldi

Nicole Arnaboldi is Vice Chair of Asset Management at Credit Suisse. "Strive for success in your job, but also try to find time to do something you're passionate about apart from your work. Whether it's starting a family, serving on a not-for-profit board or pursuing a sport, it will give you perspective and be very rewarding," she recommends.

In addition to fulfilling her role in moving Credit Suisse past Goldman atop the private-equity rankings, Nicole Arnaboldi has helped the investment bank's Asset Management Finance unit to double its minority-stake holdings in alternative investment hedge funds like Brigade Capital Management and FX Concepts.

Arnaboldi has also been instrumental in Credit Suisse's PE expansion in emerging markets. Arnaboldi came to Credit Suisse in 2000 when the firm merged with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, where she had spent 15 years in private-equity and venture-capital roles.

Teresa Ressel

Teresa Ressel is the CEO of UBS Securities. "I think in the past there's been a connotation around the idea of different groups of people needing help, and I think the people who have a little bit more humility—self included—realize we all need help," says Ressel.

American banks aren't the only ones concerned with Dodd-Frank—as CEO of UBS Securities, Teresa Ressel has been pushing hard for a level regulatory playing field for foreign-owned firms, and for better synchronization with international banking rules.

In 2015, she helped recruit Sally Miller from the American Bankers Association to serve as CEO of the Institute of International Bankers, where Ressel is a trustee. "As you know, it is unusual for a woman to be selected to head a banking trade association, at least in this country," says Miller, a former securities industry expert at the ABA.

"Teresa has offered me nothing but constructive guidance and support," Miller adds. An engineer by training and a former chief compliance officer for Kaiser Permanente, Ressel also was CFO of the U.S. Treasury Department between 2001 and 2004. She later moved to UBS Securities, and became CEO in 2007.

Please provide a statement regarding your experience in applying your quantitative skills to problem-solving in business or research settings. (250 words)

At PwC, I initiated the creation of PwC’s first fully automated valuation process for private and public companies. This consisted of creating industry-specific valuation templates using Python and VBA that used analyst report data and an API through Capital IQ to gather information from the MD&A section to give a complete valuation. The model performed an LBO, DCF, Comparable, and Transaction Analysis while using PwC valuation methodologies and industry expectations and thus became superior to generic templates. This solution saw significant savings for the firm and is now used by PwC throughout the world.

At BlackRock, I was responsible for developing a long/short pair trading strategy using every identifiable oligopoly. Initially, this required integration and cross-validation of multiple databases, including FactSet, Bloomberg, and Global Data, to evaluate their accuracy and relevance. Afterward, I took the project forward by measuring firms’ market power in oligopolies to determine industry influence. This required analyzing the financial data of every firm to determine its market share. Creating an efficient VBA Excel Macro, I collected data on over 540,000 firms to determine oligopolies for over 150 industry classifications. I also identified equities with a consistent pricing relationship using 10-year historical data to develop an algorithm using cointegration. Finally, I constructed a proprietary trading signal based on the mean reversion of the pairs using Python. The developed algorithm yielded a highly desirable annualized return of 33% during backtesting and continues to be implemented by the firm for live trading.

Please discuss why you have decided to apply to the MFE at this time and what career path you intend to pursue post-MFE. (250 Words)

Post MFE, I aim to set up my own Quantitative Hedge Fund. Working as an Analyst for a Global Hedge Fund like BlackRock has provided me the baseline skill set to leverage through an advanced degree like Berkeley’s MFE to achieve my career aspirations.

Previously, I had co-founded a philanthropic Hedge Fund, The Michigan Students Asset Management, which aims to teach students the fundamentals of investing while donating generated returns to charitable causes. I hope to expand on our current operations with a new “for-profit” fund focusing on statistical arbitrage trading strategies.

At BlackRock, I was exposed to arbitrage trading strategies and developed algorithms using Python and VBA. With Berkeley’s MFE, I hope to improve my technical skills around asset pricing, general dimension reduction techniques, and ensemble methods critical to forming accurately priced derivatives.

I envision MFE allowing me to develop a more advanced and intuitive approach to data science problems, enabling me to manipulate large data sets and automate trading decisions and executions. In addition, courses like  “deep learning”  will allow me to understand machine learning and training neural networks. This will add new dimensions to my skill repertoire to assist in analyzing various data sets, including text, audio, and images.

With the exposure attained in the MFE, I can build on a solid base of previous experience to transition smoothly and confidently into my post-MFE goal of setting up my Quantitative Hedge.

In the summer, I had the opportunity to serve as a volunteer special education teacher in San Pedro, a rural village in Costa Rica. With little knowledge of my surroundings, a language barrier, and a lack of learning equipment, accommodating the students’ unique needs was a challenge. I was required to develop creative methods, constructing visual aids from cardboard pieces to make block numbers that I could refer to while teaching.

During this time, I realized that the school’s most significant need was functional wheelchairs, as most were broken or did not have enough wheels. After some research, I discovered that it would be practical to repurpose old bicycles into wheelchairs. The idea was very well received by the school staff, with one of the teachers volunteering to assist with the project, given his previous experience as a carpenter. As a team, we collated a list of materials and calculated an estimated cost of raw materials to be 15 000 Costa Rican Colons (significantly lower than the 60 000 market price). With the basic knowledge of operating power tools and a few days of trial and error, we could create a functional wheelchair unit that was feasible to replicate.

Overall, this experience was unlike any other, requiring me to push my creative boundaries in an unfamiliar environment. However, this resilience and commitment to quality are fundamental values that I continue applying to all my challenges.

What do you view as a particular strength of yours? What do you view as a specific weakness? Would friends or family share your view? (250 words)

I believe perseverance in facing challenging circumstances through self-initiative is one of my greatest strengths. During a recent teaching experience in San Pedro, a rural village in Costa Rica, this strength of mine came to the fore. With little knowledge of my surroundings, a language barrier, and a lack of necessary equipment, teaching and accommodating the unique needs of the students posed an immense challenge. I was required to come up with creative methods, such as making a set of visual aids by cutting out cardboard pieces to make block numbers that I could refer to while teaching. I also made a significant impact by repurposing bicycles and old chairs to build over 20 wheelchairs for students. This perseverance has been integral to my personal and professional successes, which is why I believe my family and friends will concur with this view.

My biggest weakness has been spreading myself too thin due to my desire to acquire as much exposure and experience as possible. In my professional life, however, this led to a situation where I could not complete one of the many assignments despite working over 120 hours a week. This was the catalyst that triggered my desire to keep a constant open line of communication with my team regarding workload management to set attainable expectations. As a result, I have learned to prioritize tasks better and say “no” more frequently. I believe my friends and family would share this personal evolution.

Postgraduate accounting and finance personal statement example (mature student) 2.

As a senior student at the Management School in Jinan University, one of the oldest key national universities in China, I will graduate in 2010 with a diploma. However, I believe that will not be the end of my academic life.

To build up a great career upon my interest, I am now applying for advanced studies in your quality program, hoping that I can pursue a master degree of Accounting and Finance at the University of Adelaide along with a financial aid if possible.

During my undergraduate course, I figure out how and why I can succeed in financial world.

To some extent, I have a talent in mathematics which plays a crucial role in my academic achievement. I got full marks in Advanced Mathematics as the only person around the whole grade.

I have always had a logical, organised and practical way of thinking, as well as a competitive nature, and maths has always appealed to these characteristics.

Besides, I did a lot of readings in my spare time, which are related to the most recently events in Accounting Principles, Taxation Laws, and the World Financial Markets both Chinese and International.

Fortunately, I really enjoy myself in knowing the challenges of today's business and societies. By knowing these, I establish my career goal, to be an excellent CFO.

My education so far is characterized by indisputable excellence. During the first three years of my undergraduate studies, my GPA was consistently one of the highest in my class of 215 students.

In recognition of my outstanding academic record, the university has selected me to enter into graduate studies without the usually mandatory admission exams, a privilege given to only a few of the excellent students each year. I have, however, decided to turn down the offer. Because I believe the experience of studying in the University of Adelaide is more valuable for me.

Here are some reasons for my chosen of the University of Adelaide. First, she is third-oldest university in Australia and is known internationally for the quality of its programs.

Second, The Master of Accounting & Finance offers a combination of accounting and finance studies in order to enhance career prospects and extend knowledge of both disciplines. The courses you provide will strengthen my employability in the areas of financial management while providing a professional accounting qualification.

Furthermore, this program is designed to satisfy the academic requirements for associate membership of CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA). That means the course I have will fulfill the requirements of both professional bodies.

As far as I know, the program is also recognised as a CFA Program Partner which is also an essential factor as I concerned. In addition to the reasons of the above, I really fancy to both the fabulous campus and the city of Adelaide.

I am anxious to study here in the University of Adelaide to achieve my career goals. Undoubtedly, I will try my best to complete this program swimmingly and honourablly.

One key point, at the end do not mention any university, i assume your applying to about 5 different ones, so if other universities read the p.s they won't be very happy and disregard your statement completely.

Sorry i jus read through it again, dont write about 1 university at all, as i said before you should be applying to about 5. And dont talk about the universities at all. Just talk about the subject and what you have done outside of school/ inside that makes you a good candidate.

Former President Donald Trump has selected Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his vice presidential running mate.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote July 15 on Truth Social.

Vance, 39, won his Senate seat in 2022 with Trump’s backing. He would be one of the youngest vice presidents in U.S. history.

But before becoming one of Trump’s fiercest allies and defenders, Vance sharply criticized the former president. During the 2016 presidential election, Vance wrote that he goes “back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical a–hole like Nixon who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler.”

He has since sounded a different tone including in defending Trump’s actions in the events leading up to and during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Vance was critical of Vice President Mike Pence’s handling of the 2020 election results certification and in an interview with Kaitlan Collins on CNN questioned whether the vice president’s life was actually endangered during the riots. Vance also vocally condemned what he sees as the tenor of political rhetoric, which he tied to an assassination attempt during Trump’s July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs,” Vance posted on X shortly after the shooting. “That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”

Who is J.D. Vance and what is his relationship with Trump?

Before winning his Senate seat in 2022, Vance worked as an investor, commentator and bestselling author.

Vance, who was born in Middleton, Ohio, served in the U.S. Marine Corps before attending Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He worked as a corporate lawyer before moving into the tech industry as a venture capitalist.

Vance rose to fame through his 2016 memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” which describes his growing up in poverty and details the isolation, violence and drug addiction that often surrounds poor white communities in middle America.

When the book was released, Vance started talking to the media about issues important to people in his community — and started criticizing Trump.

Vance told ABC News in August 2016 that, although Trump successfully “diagnoses the problems” people are facing, he didn’t see Trump “offering many solutions.” In an October 2016 interview with journalist Charlie Rose, Vance said he was a “never-Trump guy.”

In another 2016 interview about his book, Vance told a reporter that, although his background would have made him a natural Trump supporter, “the reason, ultimately, that I am not … is because I think that (Trump) is the most-raw expression of a massive finger pointed at other people.”

Vance began to publicly change course when he launched his Senate campaign in 2021. He deleted tweets from 2016 that included him calling Trump “reprehensible” and an “idiot.” In another deleted tweet following the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape on which Trump said fame enabled him to grope women, Vance wrote: “Fellow Christians, everyone is watching us when we apologize for this man. Lord help us.”

He apologized about his Trump criticisms in a July 2021 Fox News interview, and asked people not to judge him based on what he had said. “I’ve been very open that I did say those critical things and I regret them, and I regret being wrong about the guy,” Vance said. “I think he was a good president, I think he made a lot of good decisions for people, and I think he took a lot of flak.”

In June, after news circulated that Vance was on Trump’s short list for vice president, Fox News host Bret Baier asked Vance about the comments. Vance said he was wrong about Trump. “He was a great president, and it’s one of the reasons why I’m working so hard to make sure he gets a second term,” he said.

Trump endorsed Vance in the Ohio GOP Senate primary, helping him win the race and the general election.

As a senator, Vance lobbied to defeat Ohio’s constitutional amendment that ensured access to abortion, calling it a “gut punch” after the measure passed.

After the hazardous East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment in 2023, which ignited a fire and led to evacuations and a controlled release of chemicals, Vance worked with Ohio’s senior senator, Democrat Sherrod Brown, to introduce rail safety legislation.

PolitiFact has fact-checked Vance 10 times. He’s received two Pants on Fire ratings, three Falses, two Mostly Falses and two Half Trues. He also received one Mostly True rating before he was a politician in 2018.

In March, Vance echoed a popular Republican talking point, saying that “100% of net job creation under the Biden administration has gone to the foreign-born.” We rated that Mostly False. Since Biden took office in early 2021, the number of foreign-born Americans who are employed has risen by about 5.6 million. But over the same time period, the number of native-born Americans employed has increased by almost 7.4 million. We rated False Vance’s claim in February that the $95 million Ukraine supplemental aid package included a “hidden impeachment clause against President Trump.” The measure doesn’t mention impeachment.

Because it’s the president’s job to spend congressionally appropriated funds, experts said whoever is elected president next will be responsible for spending the money allocated in the law. It doesn’t target former Trump; it would apply the same way to Biden, should he be reelected.

On immigration, Vance falsely claimed in 2022 that Biden’s “open border” meant that “more Democrat voters were “pouring into this country.” Immigrants who cross the border illegally cannot vote in federal elections. The process for immigrants to become citizens and therefore gain the right to vote can take a decade or longer.

PolitiFact also addressed controversial comments Vance made in 2021, surfaced during his Senate run, about rape being “inconvenient.”

Vance didn’t directly say “rape is inconvenient.” But when he was asked in an interview whether laws should allow people to get abortions if they were victims of rape or incest, he said that society shouldn’t view a pregnancy or birth resulting from rape or incest as “inconvenient.”

In the interview, which occurred before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Vance was also asked whether anti-abortion laws should include rape and incest exceptions. “Two wrongs don’t make a right,” he said in response. “At the end of day, we are talking about an unborn baby. What kind of society do we want to have? A society that looks at unborn babies as inconveniences to be discarded?”

​When asked again about the exceptions, Vance said: “The question portrays a certain presumption that is wrong. It’s not whether a woman should be forced to bring a child to term, it’s whether a child should be allowed to live, even though the circumstances of that child’s birth are somehow inconvenient or a problem to the society.”

Since being on Trump’s vice presidential short list, Vance has expressed a more moderate view on abortion.

On July 7 on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” for example, Vance said he supports access to the abortion pill mifepristone after the Supreme Court dismissed the case against it — echoing what Trump said days before during the presidential debate.
