People all over the world are becoming fitness conscious as they have realized that it is the most important and have shifted their priorities from everything else to keep them fit and fine as healthy with wealth. Regular exercise has several benefits it helps the body to get into the desired shape and develops resistance power from gaining additional and excessive weight. It helps a person safe from diseases such as obesity, blood pressure, heart diseases, and high cholesterol. Furthermore, an activity also helps in reducing depression and insomnia by enhancing sleeping routines. Also, such activity is known to produce positive vibes inside a person which in turn increases the person’s confidence. (Hardcastle, 2006)

Fitness training fine-tunes the muscles using and burning calories in the body which also increases the metabolic rate in the body. While an inactive person will have his or her body losing its muscles decreasing the metabolism of the body, resulting in concentration of calories and formation of fat and the person gains weight. Exercises like walking, jogging, running, swimming, doing push-ups and pull-ups, running up a flight of stairs, doing crunches, cycling, etc. not only helps a person maintain an outer strong and toned look but it also help the organs like heart, lungs, liver and other to function properly while giving mental peace. (Hasselfors, Hans, n.d.)

For the community, there can be several initiatives taken to help people exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet. Being a nutritionist advisor, I can guide people on what types of food are healthy and which types of foods should be avoided. As a social welfare worker, I can organize marathons for social causes where people can participate in the form of marathon exercises and also serve a more worldly cause. By adopting an educationist’s role, I can educate the positive aspects of personal fitness and make people aware of the negatives of not exercising. Also, I can start dancing lessons for young boys and girls where from an early stage not only children learn to dance but also learn to exercise. Furthermore, I can become a sport’s proponent where teaching people to play sports will also help them increase their activity and become fit. (Personal Health Zone, 2009)

The most common type of exercise is walking or running. From a casual stroll to a paced walk every day works the muscles relentlessly. Yet another popular exercise common amongst the younger people is playing sports since most sports involve running and stretching out the body muscles. Aerobics or even dancing is a type of exercise that is fun yet physically strengthening. Although swimming might fall under the banner of sports, most people swim to relax in the water and have a good time, and can exercise their body at the same time. For the more body-conscious people, bodybuilding is a set of exercises that strengthens the muscles by picking weights and putting regular pressure. Carrying excessive loads from to and fro also is a form of exercise. Furthermore, in a computer-related work environment, where repetitive strain injury (RSI) is quite common, people should take regular breaks and stretch out their muscles. People recommend the use of machines available in gymnasiums to flex their muscles. Yet another method of exercising is cycling either on a bicycle or a gymnasium machine. (ADAM, 2004)

Active people tend to outlive those who are inactive. In case of being physically inactive for a long time and then taking drastic measures to lose weight to achieve a good result is not an efficient way, as it will not have a lifelong effect on the body. It is rather recommended to consult the physician and go slowly and step-wise. Alongside maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy food, avoiding junk and fast food, and exercising regularly mainly in the early morning and late evening as these are the effective times for exercising.

Exercise is the repetitive performance of physical work or physical exercise to unwind the body and relieve mental stress. Physical Exercise should be done every day throughout everyone's life.

If someone exercises regularly, the benefits of doing so are frequently noticeable relatively fast. A person needs to be physically and intellectually fit because, as we have all heard, "A healthy mind dwells in a healthy body". So exercising every day is necessary if one wants to stay healthy and fit. In our daily lives, exercise is essential. It helps in maintaining our physical fitness. Exercise will help you lose weight rapidly if you're overweight because it burns calories while working out. Even though you aren't exercising, your body's weight will increase as your muscles grow, which will cause you to burn more calories than usual. Exercise will also help improve our body's blood flow and oxygen levels.

Exercise causes the brain cells to release them more frequently, which helps in the hippocampus's generation of new cells. The brain's hippocampus is the area that assists in memory regulation and learning. Reducing vital signs, which can assist in lessening the strain on your heart, is one of the additional health benefits of exercise for the soul. Your body will have a low risk of getting cardiac ailments if you exercise regularly and eat healthily.

Exercise also helps to control our body's blood sugar levels. They will contribute to the prevention or postponement of type 2 diabetes. One of the leading causes of diabetes is being overweight, which can be managed with daily exercise. Exercise helps in revitalising and reconditioning our entire body. It helps in the development of strong muscles. Exercise can help people lose weight or prevent obesity. It preserves the young and slows down the process of ageing. Exercise is essential for maintaining health and fitness because it is necessary for all aspects of life.

Everyone should exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay free from diseases. Both mental and physical development is essential for success in life. Exercise is, therefore, crucial for one's general development. We should keep a healthy balance between school, rest, and activities.

My Experience

At the age of 16, I was too fat and unable to run for more than 5 minutes. Due to my weight, I was suffering from many types of diseases. Soon after this, my father pushed me to exercise every morning because exercise frees our body and mind from stress. Every morning my father and I started going to the garden to do activities like yoga, morning walk, flexibility, and many more. In school, our physical education teacher also took all children to the ground to exercise and play outdoor games. Later, I noticed that I was recovering slowly from several diseases and lost a lot of weight. I could see the difference in my energy levels and overall performance and realised that we all should exercise every day.

It is a structured type of body training, and the different kinds of exercise develop different components of physical fitness. The types of exercise include aerobic, anaerobic, and stretching. Therefore, the overall physical fitness of an individual is highly unlikely to be developed with the practice of just one type of exercise.

It can be said that physical fitness is attained and maintained if exercise is performed regularly. In order to have overall physical fitness, all types of exercise should be included in the exercise habits of an individual.

Physical Fitness

The following list explains the different components of physical fitness:

  • Cardiorespiratory endurance. This component is the capacity for the body's heart, lungs, muscles, and tissues to expend energy by using oxygen to function and expelling carbon dioxide without tiring. This oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange occur in the cardiorespiratory system, or the heart and the lungs. This activity at maximal oxygen intake measures cardiorespiratory endurance . By some, this term is used interchangeably with physical or aerobic fitness. It is needed to be able to travel by foot between locations, dance, and run.
  • Muscle strength. Skeletal muscles in the body help maintain good posture, prevent injuries, and provides the strength needed to perform anything from routine tasks, such as carrying grocery bags or sitting up from a chair to carrying or lifting weighty objects. The more muscular strength an individual has, the greater the physical capacity will be to lift or move heavier objects. Limitations in muscular strength will be noticeable in daily life since it impacts every movement.
  • Endurance. Endurance is described as: "the ability to remain firm under suffering or misfortune without yielding." Cardiorespiratory and muscular components of physical fitness can be measured by endurance. It is essentially the ability to perform without tiring or giving up.
  • Flexibility. This is described as the range of motion available by the joints in the body. This key fitness component will protect against spontaneous injuries and joint or muscular pain. A lack of flexibility will also limit performance and affect the quality of everyday life.

Fitness Exercises

Fitness exercises target the development of different components of physical fitness. The following list explains the types of exercising and how they affect components of physical fitness:

  • Aerobic . Aerobic exercise is the practice of activity that increases the body's demand for oxygen, resulting in a marked temporary increase in respiration and heart rate. Common examples include running, dancing, biking, swimming, and jump-roping. Habitual aerobic exercise will improve the physical fitness component of cardiorespiratory endurance.

Swimming is an aerobic exercise

  • Anaerobic . Anaerobic exercise is the activity that results in the body incurring an oxygen debt which includes a wide range of exercises, such as pilates, resistance or weight training, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Continuous anaerobic exercise will improve the physical fitness component of muscle endurance . This type of exercise will also improve bone mineral density, which is good for preventing or reversing the effects of a progressive bone disease called osteoporosis.

Weight training is an anaerobic exercise

  • Stretching . Stretching is a type of physical exercise involving a specific muscle or tendon to be deliberately flexed to improve the muscle's elasticity and achieve comfortable muscle tone. Examples of stretching exercises include yoga, which is also an instinctive practice. Athletes will stretch before and after work-outs to warm up or cool down to prevent future injuries and increase future performance. It is a way to start up or safely slow down the body's activity state. The result of stretching is increased muscle control and range of motion. This type of exercise will improve the physical component of flexibility.

Stretching improves flexibility

In the world of physical fitness, body composition is the term that defines the ratio between total body fat and total fat-free mass in the body. Fat-free mass in the body includes bone, organs, tendons, ligaments, and muscle mass. It is a characteristic that reflects the individual's level of physical fitness. Body composition is affected by exercise habits and is also affected by diet. A lack of physical fitness and exercising will ultimately lead to a body composition that reflects a ratio of higher body fat to fat-free mass. An increase in fat occurs when muscle atrophies due to the lack of exercise, while an increase in fat-free mass occurs when muscle hypertrophies due to continuous resistance training.

Both aerobic and anaerobic exercises will improve body composition, decreasing the ratio of fat to fat-free mass. Because aerobic exercise will expend more energy, caloric deficits will decrease the amount of fat in the body. Continuous aerobic exercise may also affect physiologic traits, such as younger-looking skin. Anaerobic exercises, such as resistance training, will increase the amount of fat-free mass, or in this case, muscle, and decrease the ratio that way.

Physical fitness is the ability to carry out daily tasks and routine physical activities without fatigue. It is essential to a good quality of life and can be developed and maintained through the continuous habit of frequent and multi-faceted exercise . Physical fitness has different components: cardiorespiratory endurance , muscle endurance , and flexibility . Each of these can be targeted with specific types of exercise. The best type of exercise to improve cardiorespiratory endurance is aerobic exercise . The best exercise to improve muscle endurance, or the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to exert force for extended periods, is anaerobic exercise. The best exercise to improve flexibility to reduce future risks of injury and improve range of motion is stretching. Overall physical fitness, maintained by exercising , and a healthy diet, will improve body composition. Body composition is the proportion, or ratio, of fat versus fat-free mass. A lower ratio will indicate less fat than fat-free mass and healthier physical fitness.

Video Transcript

While on vacation last year, I had an opportunity to ride a Segway. After only a few minutes of wobbling, I felt like I had mastered this upright transportation technology, and I was able to travel long distances with very little physical effort. We certainly live in the technology age, and the advances we see in technology have simplified many physically demanding tasks. In fact, it can make you wonder if all of this technology has eased our physical burdens so much that one day we might be so physically unfit that we can no longer perform tasks without the help of technology. Our ability to carry out daily tasks and routine physical activities without undue fatigue is called physical fitness . While too much reliance on technology could make us less fit, we see that we can improve physical fitness through the performance of different exercises. In this lesson, we will take a look at the five components that make up physical fitness, how we can improve them and the benefits they bring to our lives.

Cardiorespiratory Endurance

In the most general terms, a fit person is able to perform tasks with more sustainable energy and for longer periods than an unfit person. But, fitness is more than just the ability to work longer; in fact, it includes a number of components, one of which is cardiorespiratory endurance . This is a measure of the circulatory and respiratory systems' ability to deliver oxygen and nutrients to and eliminate waste products from cells. Your cells need oxygen and nutrients in order to fuel your muscles during periods of physical activity. When your cells work they produce wastes that need to be transported away. How efficiently your body does these tasks is a measure of your cardiorespiratory endurance.

You can build your cardiorespiratory endurance through aerobic exercise , which is a type of exercise that uses oxygen to meet energy demands. The word aerobic means using oxygen, so aerobic exercise is literally exercise that uses oxygen. This is the type of exercise that we might consider with activities performed over time at low to moderate intensity, such as taking a comfortable jog around the neighborhood, riding your bicycle or rowing a boat. Aerobic exercise is important because it strengthens your heart and lungs by making them work harder. Did you ever hear that really fit athletes have very low resting heart rates? That's because a high level of fitness leads to a strong heart, which is able to pump a lot of blood with fewer heartbeats.

Muscle Strength and Endurance

Another component of physical fitness is muscle strength , which is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to exert force against resistance. Having greater muscle strength enhances physical fitness because it allows you to more easily perform tasks such as pushing, pulling and lifting. You have experienced the importance of muscle strength when you performed household tasks such as moving furniture or carrying a full trash bag out to the curb.

Muscle endurance is yet another component of physical fitness. It is defined as the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to exert force for extended periods. Whereas muscle strength is the ability to give it all you've got in one maximum motion, endurance is the ability to keep going and perform repetitive motions of less intensity over time. You have likely experienced the importance of muscle endurance when you shoveled snow off your driveway or raked the leaves in your backyard.

You can build both muscle strength and endurance by performing exercises against resistance, such as weight lifting. These exercises typically involve anaerobic exercise , which is a type of exercise that does not use oxygen, instead the fuel for this type of exercise is provided by metabolic pathways. Do you see the prefix 'an-'? This means without, so anaerobic exercise is done without oxygen. These exercises tend to be more intense and cannot be sustained as long as aerobic exercises.

Flexibility

When you think about someone who is physically fit, you might picture someone with big muscles or who can run long distances. What you might not think about is a person with good flexibility . Yet flexibility, or the ability for joints to move through a range of motion, is an important component of physical fitness. Good flexibility can improve your performance in sports and other activities, and it can reduce your risk of injury. You can improve flexibility by regularly stretching or moving your joints through their full range of motion.

Body Composition

The final component of physical fitness is body composition , which is the proportion of fat versus fat-free mass. Fat-free mass is any tissue in your body that is not fat. This would include muscle, bones, organs, tendons and ligaments. You can reduce your body fat and increase the proportion of lean muscle by regularly engaging in both aerobic and anaerobic exercises.

Let's review...

Physical fitness is defined as your ability to carry out daily tasks and routine physical activities without undue fatigue.

There are five components that make up physical fitness, including cardiorespiratory endurance , which is a measure of the circulatory and respiratory systems' ability to deliver oxygen and nutrients to and eliminate waste products from cells. This component can be improved through aerobic exercise , which is a type of exercise that uses oxygen to meet energy demands, like going for a jog.

Two more components of physical fitness are muscle strength , which is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to exert force against resistance, and muscle endurance , which is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to exert force for extended periods. These components can be improved through anaerobic exercise , which is a type of exercise that does not use oxygen, like weight lifting.

The last two components of physical fitness are flexibility , or the ability for joints to move through a range of motion, which can be improved by stretching; and body composition , which is the proportion of fat versus fat-free mass that you carry. You can improve your body composition through regularly engaging in both aerobic and anaerobic exercises.

What Is Physical Fitness?

This is an excerpt from fitness for life 6th edition with web resources-cloth by charles b. corbin & guy le masurier..

Physical fitness refers to the ability of your body systems to work together efficiently to allow you to be healthy and perform activities of daily living. Being efficient means doing daily activities with the least effort possible. A fit person is able to perform schoolwork, meet home responsibilities, and still have enough energy to enjoy sport and other leisure activities. A fit person can respond effectively to normal life situations, such as raking leaves at home, stocking shelves at a part-time job, and marching in the band at school. A fit person can also respond to emergency situations - for example, by running to get help or aiding a friend in distress.

The Parts of Physical Fitness

Physical fitness is made up of 11 parts - 6 of them health related and 5 skill related. All of the parts are important to good performance in physical activity, including sports. But the 6 are referred to as contributing to health-related physical fitness because scientists in kinesiology have shown that they can reduce your risk of chronic disease and promote good health and wellness. These parts of fitness are body composition , cardiorespiratory endurance , flexibility , muscular endurance , power , and strength . They also help you function effectively in daily activities.

As the name implies, skill-related physical fitness components help you perform well in sports and other activities that require motor skills. For example, speed helps you in sports such as track and field. These 5 parts of physical fitness are also linked to health but less so than the health-related components. For example, among older adults, balance , agility , and coordination are very important for preventing falls (a major health concern), and reaction time relates to risk for automobile accidents. Each part of physical fitness is described in more detail in the two following features: The Six Parts of Health-Related Fitness and The Five Parts of Skill-Related Fitness.

what is physical fitness in your own words essay

Health-Related Physical Fitness

Think about a runner. She can probably run a long distance without tiring; thus she has good fitness in at least one area of health-related physical fitness. But does she have good fitness in all six parts? Running is an excellent form of physical activity, but being a runner doesn't guarantee fitness in all parts of health-related physical fitness. Like the runner, you may be more fit in some parts of fitness than in others. The feature named The Six Parts of Health-Related Fitness describes each part and shows an example. As you read about each part, ask yourself how fit you think you are in that area.

Power, formerly classified as a skill-related part of fitness, is now classified as a health-related part of fitness. A report by the independent Institute of Medicine provides evidence of the link between physical power and health. The report indicates that power is associated with wellness, higher quality of life, reduced risk of chronic disease and early death, and better bone health. Power, and activities that improve power, have also been found to be important for healthy bones in children and teens.

How do you think you rate in each of the six health-related parts of fitness? To be healthy, you should be fit for each of the six parts. Totally fit people are less likely to develop a hypokinetic condition - a health problem caused partly by lack of physical activity - such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, colon cancer, or a high body fat level . You'll learn more about hypokinetic conditions in other chapters of this book. People who are physically fit also enjoy better wellness. They feel better, look better, and have more energy. You don't have to be a great athlete in order to enjoy good health and wellness and be physically fit. Regular physical activity can improve anyone's health-related physical fitness.

Skill-Related Physical Fitness

Just as the runner in our example may not achieve a high rating in all parts of health-related physical fitness, she also may not rate the same in all parts of skill-related physical fitness. Though most sports require several parts of skill-related fitness, different sports can require different parts. For example, a skater might have good agility but lack good reaction time. Some people have more natural ability in some areas than in others. No matter how you score on the skill-related parts of physical fitness, you can enjoy some type of physical activity.

Remember, too, that good health doesn't come from being good in skill-related physical fitness. It comes from doing activities designed to improve your health-related physical fitness, and it can be enjoyed both by great athletes and by people who consider themselves poor athletes.

As noted earlier, health-related fitness offers a double benefit. It not only helps you stay healthy but also helps you perform well in sport and other activities. For example, cardiorespiratory endurance helps you resist heart disease and helps you perform well in sports such as swimming and cross-country running. Similarly, strength helps you perform well in sports such as football and wrestling, muscular endurance is important in soccer and tennis, flexibility helps in sports such as gymnastics and diving, power helps in track activities such as the discus throw and the long jump, and having a healthy amount of body fat makes your body more efficient in many activities.

Doctors are like body mechanics. They check to make sure everything is working right and fix any problems. Going to the doctor even when you feel fine is important. They can give you shots to stop you from getting sick and help you stay healthy.

Feeling Good

In summary, physical health is taking care of your body so it can work its best. Eating healthy foods, playing and exercising, sleeping well, going to the doctor, staying clean, and being safe are all important.
