Welcome to Year 5 at Billingshurst Primary School! The teachers are Miss Brown (Year Leader), Ms Mack and Mrs Rozenthal/Mrs Cole .  They are supported by Mrs Hiley, Mr Lewendon, Mrs Marr and Mrs Hulcoop. We are excited about this year's curriculum and have some wonderful topics throughout Year 5.

We start our year with our exciting Autumn topic: What Lies Beyond… During the first half term we will take the children on an intriguing journey to Ancient Egypt, using artefacts from the Novium Museum in Chichester to inspire historical enquiry and writing opportunities.  In the second half term, our journey will continue to space and beyond, exploring what lies beyond our home planet and the mysteries of the Solar System and Galaxy.     In the Spring term, our topic is Incredible Invaders. The children will first study the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, exploring their legacy on British culture, Art and Geography.  We will also use texts such as the classic Viking myth Beowulf and Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman to inspire our second half term of learning linked to the Viking invasion and impact on Britain.  The focus of the Summer term will be Living Things and their Habitats, where we will also be embarking upon quests of different kinds, inspired by key texts such as: Survivors (Extraordinary Tales From the Wild and Beyond) by David Long and Kerry Hyndman, The Last Wild by Piers Torday and A Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave.  We will explore the life-cycles of plants and animals, using real-live specimens to bring our Science to life!  We encourage participation in homework by providing interesting and engaging challenges through our homework grid, for our pupils to complete and bring to school.  We highly value and encourage the development of a range of learning skills, such as creativity, resilience, curiosity and team work, rewarding children with merits as they demonstrate these.

We also encourage reading by providing a reading journal for children to record their achievements in interesting ways. We visit the school library weekly and have extensive class libraries for the children to use.

Times tables are still a priority and fast recall of all times table facts up to 12 X 12 will help with confidence in Maths lessons.

We also encourage the independent and adult-supported practise of spellings, with children having opportunities to consolidate Year 3 and 4 spelling lists, as well as moving on to the Year 5 and 6 spelling patterns and common exception words.  The Year 5 team are excited about the year ahead and look forward to working with you and your children to make it an enjoyable and memorable year.

Wakoos After School Clubs are based across two sites in Billingshurst, with children collected from Billingshurst Primary School.

Sharks at Wakoos Centre4Children (4-7 years) and

Crocodiles at the Women's Hall (7 - 11 years).

Our friendly and experienced staff team provide a range of fun and exciting activities throughout the sessions which focus on building the children's confidence, developing their skills and expanding their interests. Each session is tailored to suit the children's individual needs, interests and abilities, and the children have lots of opportunities to input into the weekly planning. We also work with schools to develop opportunities for children to complete their homework at the clubs, with the help of staff.

Wakoos After School Clubs follow the Playwork Principles to create positive and stimulating environments for children to play in.

An example of a typical afternoon at After School Club:

3:1 5pm - Children are collected from their classrooms at Billingshurst Primary School and taken to the meeting point.

3:25pm - Children and staff walk back to Wakoos C4C/Women's Hall in a safe walking bus wearing high visibility vests

3:35pm - Children have a fruit based snack and drink whilst discussing their day with their friends and staff

Welcome to Year 1!

The teachers are Miss Spoard (Year Lead) Mrs Tonkinson, Mrs Mason and Miss Jolley, supported by Mrs Gold, Mrs Dewell,  Mrs Casagrande and Mrs Van Jaarsveld. A smooth transition from Early Years to Year One is one of our priorities in the Autumn term as this provides the children with a positive start the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum.

Teaching, learning and assessment takes different forms throughout the day; new ideas and concepts are introduced during regular inputs where the children are involved in age appropriate discussions, handle various manipulatives and practise new skills. All whilst being guided by the teacher.  The children are then challenged and supported through either 1:1 sessions, small group work or independent activities depending on their needs. Our classroom environments are carefully planned to inspire the children’s learning through our topics. In the Autumn term, our provision is often set up to encourage child initiated learning and opportunities to learn through play. Throughout the year, the learning provision changes to become more structured.

We want the children to take ownership of their learning, therefore we spend time each lesson providing in the moment feedback. This is when we discuss the children’s learning, their areas of strength and how they can improve next time.

Your child will bring home a Read Write Inc book and you will receive a link to an online text every week.  These link to the text they are reading in class. We encourage all our children to read these books more than once over the week to promote understanding and comprehension skills. They will also have the opportunity to bring home a 'pleasure for reading' book and these are for the children to enjoy with their grown up.

We are very happy to see you about any questions or concerns you may have at any time during the year. Please feel free to either talk to us at the end of the day or make an appointment if you would like to talk in more detail. You can contact any of the team via [email protected]
