Further things to consider when writing application letters to schools

Further things to consider when writing application letters to schools

Application Letters

Application letters are letters that you write to formally request for something from authority, apply for a job, or join an institution. Effective application letters will give a detailed explanation for your interest in the specific item, company, or institution. They showcase your abilities and strengths and illustrate your experience. In most cases, people write application letters to express their interest in receiving a position, attending an institution, or when applying for a visa, for instance. In all scenarios, application letters must be accompanied by the relevant documents. Application letters are the perfect tool to demonstrate something of your personality. Therefore, you should write in a professional tone setting a clear outline that allows the reader to scan the primary data quickly. Introduce yourself and briefly explain your intent and reason for the application. Address the letter with a title or name of the recipient. If your application is for a job or to join an institution, for example, you need to highlight your experience and qualification; if you are applying for a travel visa, make sure to state a clear intention for your travel. End with a positive tone and invite the recipient to contact you.

Letters to Schools

Letters to schools are letters written to institutions designed to provide learning environment and spaces to pupils and students. There are many times when you may feel the need to write to a school administration. Maybe you want to recommend a student or employee or want to apply for an academic program. Perhaps your child has a disability, and you want to make sure that he/she is receiving special education services. Whatever the issue, putting your thoughts in writing avoids confusion since it provides you and the recipient with a record of your request. It is, therefore, crucial to keep a copy of any letter you send. All letters to schools must use the standard business letter style. Start your letter with the proper address and salutation. Introduce yourself and explain the reason for your letter clearly and concisely. Depending on the content of your letter, provide any documentation that gives the recipient reference to the case or clarifies your concerns. Keep the tone polite, respectful, and professional. Close by thanking the recipient for his/her time and with a note of anticipation of positive feedback. Sign off and proofread the final draft before sending it.

College Admissions

feature_aliceinwonderlandrabbit.jpg

If you're wondering whether there are any colleges with late application deadlines, you're in luck! Lots of colleges have application deadlines in February or later, and many more keep rolling admissions open until all their spots have been filled.

Here, we give you a full list of colleges with late application deadlines. But before diving into this list, let's consider an important question: what exactly is considered a normal deadline?

When Are Most College Deadlines?

As you'll see in a moment, there's a lot of variation when it comes to college deadlines. Early deadlines can be in November when you're just a couple of months into senior year. By contrast, especially late deadlines can go right up until the start of a college semester!

The majority of college deadlines will fall in November or January of your senior year. Most regular decision deadlines are in January, typically on January 1 or January 15. You'll apply right around the new year and usually get your admissions decision in March or April.

Many schools also offer an early action and/or early decision deadline for students who are ready to apply earlier (and ready to hear back earlier, too). These deadlines tend to be November 1 or November 15, and students usually hear back by mid-December.

While these typical deadlines are in November or January, most of the work starts long before. To apply, you need to be ready with letters of recommendation , essays , and your SAT / ACT scores , all of which take weeks to months of preparation.

If you're not ready with all these components, you might look for colleges with later application deadlines. But what are some other reasons you might be looking to apply later than January?

body_timeturner.jpg

Since Dumbledore stopped lending out his time-turner after the whole Prisoner of Azkaban debacle, your best option for buying extra time is with a late application deadline.

Who Would Benefit From Late Application Deadlines?

If you're reading this article, you might have a very specific reason you searched for "colleges with late application deadlines." Maybe you'd like another opportunity to take the SAT or ACT to achieve your target scores. Or maybe you're hoping to bring up your GPA with grades from the first semester of senior year. By applying later, you might be able to include part of senior year on your transcript.

Another possible reason could be that you're looking to add some more options to your college list. Maybe you've rethought your choices or received a rejection from an early decision school. By applying to some more schools, you might end up going somewhere you didn't initially expect to.

Regardless of whether you slacked off during the "normal" application season or just want to add another option to your plans, you'll find that there are many colleges accepting applications in February and later.

Below is a list of schools with deadlines after February 1, followed by colleges that might also be a good option for you because they use rolling admissions .

Fun with rolling (admissions)!

Colleges With Rolling Admissions

Unlike the colleges listed above, schools with rolling admissions do not have a set application deadline. Instead, they open a window of time during which they'll accept applications, often from the fall to the spring.

Although this policy gives you more flexibility, it's definitely not a pass to procrastinate. Spaces at rolling admissions schools can fill up, and commonly admissions committees give the strongest consideration to students who file their applications early or submit by a priority deadline. A good rule of thumb to use when applying is, "The earlier, the better."

Below are some popular schools that use rolling admissions, but they aren't the only ones! If you're interested in the full list of rolling admissions colleges, you can find it here .

Final Thoughts: Colleges With Late Application Deadlines

Whether you are just starting your college planning or are a senior looking to shoot off some last-minute applications, make sure you know all of the college's deadlines and requirements. Even though these colleges have deadlines that are later than average, you still need to plan and prep your application months before, whether you're asking for a letter of rec , studying for the SAT , or drafting and revising your personal essay .

Furthermore, colleges with rolling admissions might have a priority deadline as early as November. If you're really serious about a particular school, try to apply as early as possible. An added motivation is the knowledge that, in many cases, the sooner you apply, the sooner you'll get an admissions decision!

If any of the schools above interest you, you might be able to spread out your work and remove some of the pressure from the typical college application season in November and December. At the same time, don't put off your applications for too long—deadlines have a habit of sneaking up on you before you know it!

How to Write an Appeal Letter for College (and Whether You Should)

January 31, 2023

appeal letter college

If you are a fan of podcasts like Serial , documentaries like Making a Murderer , and the billions of similar wrongful convictions stories that have been chronicled across various mediums in recent years, then you are already somewhat familiar with the concept of an appeals process. Fortunately, if you are reading this article, it is more likely that you find yourself rejected by your first-choice college than incarcerated for a crime you didn’t commit (silver linings everywhere!). Jokes aside, getting rejected from your dream schools is a legitimately painful emotional experience. It’s a lot to process, and while adults can tell you that “Everything happens for a reason” and that “Your backup school would be a dream school for many” (both true, by the way), you may still wish to take one final Hail Mary which brings us the subject of how to write an appeal letter for college.

How to Write an Appeal Letter for College

Can you appeal a college rejection? At some schools, the answer is “Yes”–at others–the answer is “No.” Let’s dive in and discuss whether this is the right choice for you and, if so, the logistics of penning and filing an appeal.

Step #1: Act Fast

If you’re going to appeal, you’ll want to do so within days of receiving the rejection. Upon releasing admissions decisions, colleges are already shoulder-deep in the creation of their freshman class. As such, schools often put a limit on how late they will accept an appeals letter. For example, Georgia Tech , UCLA , and the University of Maryland all have a deadline of April 15. Even if a school doesn’t publicly state a specific date, try to expedite this process as much as possible.

Step #2: Research the school-specific appeals process

Not all schools consider appeals letters from rejected applicants. Cornell, the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton do not allow the submission of an appeals letter under any circumstances. It is much more common for public schools to offer a formal appeals process. However, many private schools do offer some level of guidance on their website as well. A simple Google search of “appeals letter _____ University” will get the job done.

Step #3: Identify the core of your argument

The basis for appeal should be clear and able to be presented in a concise manner and should be made by the applicant, not their parents. Further, the basis for appeal has to be substantive and should not include any of the following all-too-common arguments/actions:

  • Resubmitting materials that were already on your original application. Remember, they already read your “Why us” essay, extracurriculars, awards, etc.
  • Comparing yourself to a classmate who was admitted and expressing that you deserved it more. Arguments like this will not even be considered.
  • Listing other schools that admitted you. Frankly, they really aren’t interested.
  • Citing legacy status or other family connections to the university. This was already considered by the committee when they made their decision.

Turning to more legit reasons to appeal an admissions decision, here are the most common:

  • You have a previously undisclosed health condition or personal issue that could change the way your application is viewed. If revealing a health condition, a letter from your physician or other documentation is worth including. Keep in mind that if you already disclosed this in your original application, this would not be valid grounds for appeal.
  • Your grades or test scores were reported incorrectly on the application. This does happen occasionally, believe it or not. If this is the case, provide documentation of the correct materials and place this info front and center when crafting the letter.
  • Your grades or test scores have dramatically improved since your application was reviewed. For example, let’s say that you were rejected by UIUC’s Gies College of Business and had a 1340 SAT at the time. Your latest results just came back as a 1500. Well, that is a jump worth reporting! In fact, that level of improvement would take an applicant from below the 25th percentile of accepted applicants all the way above the 75th.

Step #4: Compose a letter with a friendly and humble tone.

This is pretty obvious, but we know from experience that this next nugget of advice still needs to be stated explicitly: Don’t accuse the admissions committee of being unfair or not doing their due diligence the first time (e.g. “I know how overworked admissions officers are and this may have caused you to rush through my application review…”). Be humble, polite, gracious, respectful, and extremely grateful for their time in reviewing the appeal.

Step #5: Keep moving forward

Keep in mind that the chances of a successful appeal are less than 1%. Therefore, while spending time crafting a quality appeals letter can be worthwhile if the core of your case for admission is strong, don’t forget the statistical reality of this pursuit. Getting overly bogged down in appeals can end up being detrimental to other areas of your life. This includes working on deciding which of the colleges that you have been admitted into is the best fit. Also continue to finish out your high school career on a strong note, enjoy your extracurriculars, and savor your final months living with family and hanging out with your friends.

How to Write an Appeal Letter for College – Final Thoughts

As applicants and as the parents of those applicants it is perfectly normal to, upon word of a college rejection, exclaim, “This must be a mistake!” While it likely isn’t an actual error, the rejection of many highly-qualified applicants from the nation’s top schools is an unfortunate phenomenon of modern American society. When you review the Hardest Colleges to Get Into , you notice more and more prominent schools with 5-10% acceptance rates. Each year, those schools reject 90%-95% of those who apply, the majority of whom can make a sincerely terrific case that they should have been accepted.

In sum, if you have a genuine case for an appeal, go ahead and write an appeal letter to college. However, the more important action will be evaluating which prospective college can do the most for you .

Application for Coming Late to School (Apology Letter)

Did you get late for school? Sample apology application by the student for coming late to school on regular basis due to any reason.

Apology Application for Coming Late in the Class

Dear Principal,

Yesterday I came late to school due to some issues. I request you to please accept my apology and allow me to sit in the class. I will be grateful to you.

Sincerely Yours,

Apology Letter for Arrivaling Late in School

Dear Madam,

I got late due to some unforeseen circumstances. I request you to please accept my apology and allow my entry into the class. I will be grateful to you.

Reaching Late in School Regularly. Application for Coming Late in School

This application is to request permission to come late to the school for this month. My father is going out of the city in his car for his office work. Due to no other conveyance of my own, I had to come on the local bus.

The first bus comes at 7:15 am to a nearby stop, and reaches the school at 8:30 am. so as due to such unforeseen circumstances I request you to allow me to come half an hour late at the school only for this month. I will be thankful to you.

Letter for Coming Late to School

The Principal,

Subject: Apology for arriving late in School

Please be informed that my residence is quite far away from our school i.e. in Bahria Town, Lahore. It takes me around 45 minutes to arrive at school daily. I am very regular, and usually always on time. But, today, I got late due to heavy rainfall in my locality. I had to wait for the rain to settle down a bit so that I could travel via bike. Due to this, I got late for my first class. I request you to kindly allow me to sit in the class, and take the rest of the lecture.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Yours obediently,

Application for Today I will Come Late

Sit it is humbly stated that I am studying under your kind supervision in class 10th.A. Sir, I want to bring your kind attention to a work of urgent nature at my home today. Sir, it might be your knowledge that my father works abroad, and he was on leave for the last three months. Sir his leave has expired, and he is returning to his job today. His seat is confirmed on the flight at 7 am today, and I will have to go to the airport to see him off. Sir as you know that minimum travel time from the airport to our area is one, and a half hours. Hence keeping the above in view it is requested that I may kindly be permitted to come to school late today at 10 am.

Yours Obediently,

Application for Coming Late to School Regularly/Daily

Dear Principal, Sir, it is humbly stated that I am studying under your kind supervision in class 10th.A. as it is happening on a frequent basis that I am coming late to school, and getting warned by the school administration regularly. Sir today I want to draw your kind attention towards a consistent problem which I am facing daily. I am the eldest son of my parents, and there are a lot of responsibilities for me because my father works overseas. My one younger sister is studying in school 10 km away from our residence, and there is no pick, and drop service or public transport facility which can be availed by her. Moreover, there is not any other school in our town for girls.

Therefore I have to pick and drop her up at her school before coming to my own school. it is also in your knowledge sir that morning school timings of most of the schools are almost same. It is also worth mentioning that to leave her at her school much early will not be good even then I drop here there 15 minutes before the school timings. After that, I only have 15 minutes to reach my school but unfortunately, I have to face a railway crossing on the way which also destroys my 15 minutes, and ultimately I get late 10 to 20 minutes almost on regular basis.

Keeping in view the above-mentioned facts it requested that my late coming to school due to an unavoidable situation may please be over sighted. Sir, it is hoped that my problem will be considered sympathetically.

Opinion: How to skip the college admissions rat race and still get a degree

College admissions in the United States have evolved into a rat race.

Seniors will be getting their acceptance and rejection notices in the next few weeks. They will have spent years cramming for grades, toiling at college-level courses, prepping for entrance exams and spreading themselves thin with clubs, sports, the arts and volunteer work, all for the singular goal of being admitted to their dream schools. At the same time, their equally anxious parents have been scrambling to figure out how to finance their children’s education if they are fortunate enough to be admitted.

This leaves many, including admissions consultants such as myself, to rightfully question whether our higher education system is broken.

There is an alternative to the shockingly low acceptance rates and high-priced tuition that mark the college admissions sweepstakes in the United States: international universities. Studying abroad for a semester has long been a rite of passage for college students seeking to explore the world. But attending an international university to obtain an undergraduate degree is becoming increasingly popular as well.

Storied universities abroad offer strong preparation for postgraduate employment or graduate school, and their admissions process is often more straightforward, their acceptance rates higher and their tuition costs lower than comparable schools at home.

Let’s take Oxford University as an example. You might suspect it would be just as difficult to be admitted to and as expensive as, say, Harvard or Stanford. But depending on what a student wants to major in, acceptance rates can reach up to 17% , compared with 3% to 4% for equally highly regarded universities in the U.S. At Oxford, like most international schools, you can’t tap U.S.-style financial aid packages, but the cost is lower all around. Tuition for many programs starts at 33,000 pounds for international students. That’s about $42,000, significantly less than what many private universities in the United States charge.

The cost difference looks even better when you consider that most U.K. programs are completed in three years, not four. And for American high school students and their families, the process of applying is much less cumbersome and stressful.

Most British schools straightforwardly weigh applicants’ college entrance exams and their demonstrated interest in their intended fields. This holds true for well-regarded options in Canada, Ireland, France, Spain and other countries, where universities publish test score requirements , removing the guesswork about what it takes to be admitted. In addition to increased transparency, these universities do not obsess over personal essays and extraneous extracurricular activities.

You may wonder if attending college abroad will limit your job prospects at home after graduation. With few exceptions — primarily programs such as nursing or accounting, where students use their undergraduate education as part of a licensing process in the U.S. — the answer is no. Employers and graduate schools appreciate applicants with diverse perspectives and experiences that can help them navigate an increasingly global workforce and marketplace.

I speak from experience counseling students to ensure that their college choices will help them achieve their long-term goals. One student was passionate about motor-sports engineering, but he was not excited about pursuing a general mechanical engineering degree, which is typically offered in the United States. Instead, he was admitted to a program at Oxford Brookes University tailor-made for his interest in performance automotive engineering. When he graduated, he had job offers in the U.S., U.K. and other countries, including from Formula One teams that recruited at his university.

Regardless of what a student studies, many find developing foreign language skills and an international perspective to be invaluable when applying for jobs or grad schools. This matches my own experience. I applied for investment banking positions on Wall Street prior to graduating from college, and the only offer I received was from a bank that valued the semester abroad I spent in Argentina; it was looking for a Spanish-speaking analyst to assist with South American clients.

Going abroad for a college education is far from the norm among American students. But thinking outside the box is a skill that will serve them well in the admissions process wherever they decide to apply, not to mention for the rest of their lives. Why not employ it to escape the rat race of U.S. admissions?

Public Health Roles to Pursue Before Medical School

Gap years before med school can be spent many ways, such as volunteering at nonprofit organizations or startup companies.

Public Health Roles Before Med School

There are opportunities in health research that potential medical school applicants can do before they apply.

Premedical students taking a gap year or years before medical school can consider pursuing public health opportunities to complement their patient care experiences.

Public health experiences equip future doctors with essential skills to address broader societal health care issues, such as health care disparities, infectious disease outbreaks, health effects of climate change, water sanitation and access to health care. Premeds can also gain insights into epidemiology , health policy and health promotion strategies.

Gap years are opportune times to pursue public health experiences because premeds can gain hands-on experiences rather than the more theoretical approach to public health offered during college courses.

During my first gap year after graduating from college, I wanted to apply the public health knowledge I had learned in the classroom and affect health care at the population level. Entering my gap years, I had some specific goals related to public health.

First, I wanted to learn how to build public health programs and initiatives. Second, I wanted to understand the dynamics among local health care clinics, governments and nongovernmental organizations. Third, I wanted to see how physicians could take their clinical insights and create public health programs to affect population-level changes. Finally, I was excited to learn as much about public health as possible.

So how did I pursue these objectives during my gap year and what public health initiatives did I pursue?

I spent my first gap year as a Fulbright scholar in the Philippines. I first sought out doctors who were involved in public health initiatives. I learned how their clinical experiences inspired their public health initiatives.

Second, I volunteered my time to help with any public health initiatives. From these volunteering opportunities, I gained on-the-ground experience with different public health projects. I learned how to create new public health initiatives and partnerships with other community organizations.

For example, I helped one doctor launch a national HIV awareness campaign in the Philippines facilitated by unique partnerships with the music industry and media. With another doctor, I traveled to rural Philippines to volunteer at a cervical cancer screening program she created for low-income women.

As I was helping physicians with their public health projects, I was pitching other health care leaders about a public health program I wanted to create – I had a vision to increase access to vaccinations, which was also the topic of my senior thesis research at Princeton University in New Jersey.

Through persistently telling everyone about my interest in vaccinations, I was able to work on a project with the World Health Organization on improving hepatitis B vaccine rates among newborns in Manila. I learned how to collaborate with organizations like the World Health Organization and city governments.

Finally, I was hungry to leverage every opportunity possible to learn more about a broad array of public health and global health topics. Any time I received an invite to a public health conference, I said yes. Every time a policy leader or doctor invited me to a public health meeting, I said yes. Every time I was offered a chance to volunteer at a public health event, I said yes.

During my gap year, I was essentially a public health sponge. I had a great year learning about topics ranging from nutrition to neonatal health to disaster medicine . I was able to pick the brains of health care leaders about public health and gain tips to make public health initiatives successful.

Premedical students often ask me about how I find public health opportunities. My first piece of advice is that premeds should network with other physicians involved with public health. While some opportunities are widely publicized, many are discovered through networking.

Here are common public health opportunities premed students can pursue during their gap years.

Public Health Research

Many medical schools and public health schools around the U.S. have faculty members who are engaged in public health research . Popular types include epidemiology, analyzing large data sets to understand health outcomes among different subsets of the population and analyzing the success of public health programs and initiatives.

Public Health Departments

Premed students can work for public health departments at the community, state or national level. National-level opportunities are found at organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Gap year jobs at public health departments often include working on existing public health projects. For example, you can lead car seat safety classes in the community or prenatal classes for women.

Nonprofit and Nongovernmental Organizations

Premeds can work for large NGOs and nonprofits like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Clinton Foundation or AmeriCorps, an independent agency of the U.S. government. Premeds can conduct research or health programming at these organizations.

There are also excellent public health opportunities at smaller, community-based nonprofits. They may have more niche opportunities and work with more specific populations, such as homeless people and individuals with disabilities or drug use disorders. As a premed working at a small nonprofit, your work will tackle initiatives toward improving the health of specific populations.

Startups and Other Companies

Many premed students don’t know that they can gain public health experience at private companies, particularly startups . For example, my mentees have worked at health education companies. Other mentees have worked for companies where they created and analyzed community-based public health programs.

Smaller companies are less likely to have official job postings. If premeds are interested in a specific company, I encourage them to reach out to the founder directly to see if there are opportunities. Chances are high that the companies are looking for bright, motivated talent!

Pursuing public health opportunities during gap years can be enriching. Learning about public health can help you translate your insights from patients you see in clinic to projects and research that can benefit entire populations.

Med Schools With the Highest MCAT Scores

A small group of medical student residents gather around a boardroom table to to meet with their medical team lead. They each have cases out on front of them as they work together collaboratively to discuss each one. They are each dressed professionally in medical scrubs and are listening attentively to the doctor leading the meeting at the head of the table.
