Table of Contents

1. “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” By Kelly Clarkson

In 2011, Kelly Clarkson released “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” an anthem of resilience and self-belief.

What the song basically says in the chorus is that the challenges we encounter make us, not break us. We learn to embrace hardships and failures and use them as stepping stones to become stronger.

However, the song is not solely about survival. It reminds us to thrive even when faced with obstacles. And it encourages us to believe in ourselves that we can get past anything, even the biggest hurdles. It teaches us to be resilient even when we feel weak.

2. “Rise” By Katy Perry

The empowering anthem “Rise” by Katy Perry shows human’s indomitable spirit in overcoming obstacles. The song highlights the struggles, the fight, and the triumph over adversities.

At its core, “Rise” focuses on embracing change in the process of overcoming challenges. It tells us to “rise up” when facing trials. It’s about looking for the strength within ourselves to go through life’s ups and downs.

In the second verse, the narrator addresses her doubters and asserts her confidence in her determination to face her problems. She challenges us to rise above our fears and doubts.

3. “When You Believe” By Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston

One of the highlights of the 1998 animated musical drama film The Prince of Egypt is one of its soundtracks, “When You Believe.” This was a duet by American singers Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey .

Thematically, the song talks about overcoming obstacles in the lyrics. The song encourages listeners to remain strong despite the hardship. And when things overwhelm us, we must remain faithful and hopeful.

The song’s central theme is that miracles happen when we believe in ourselves and what we can do. Hope, no matter how fragile it seems sometimes, can withstand even the biggest challenges. Thus, we must keep fighting and keep believing.

4. “Fight Song” By Rachel Platten

The 2015 single “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten definitely needs to be on our list. It peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the Australian Singles Chart.

But more than the song’s popularity is its timeless message about not giving up despite the numerous challenges. It’s an inspirational anthem for those who are going through a tough time. While the song does not mention overcoming obstacles, its message is a reminder that we have the strength to come through.

Through the song, Platten shows the power of the human spirit and the ability to triumph over adversity. She emphasizes that even if no one believes in her and she “might only have one match,” she “can make an explosion.”

5. “Titanium” By David Guetta Ft. Sia

Up next is another song that’s about inner strength and resilience. David Guetta and Sia collaborated for the 2011 single “Titanium.”

What you can take away from the song is the message of rising above negativity and criticism. Here, titanium is used as a metaphor to show that the narrator is strong and invincible. Even if her detractors “shoot” her down, she will remain standing because she is titanium.

The song tells us that even if we are knocked down many times, we can rise again. No matter how many obstacles we face along the way, we can remain whole and unfazed. We are like titanium, which possesses high strength and resistance.

6. “Rise Up” By Andra Day

When we go through tough times, it helps to find a beacon of hope. And that’s what you’ll find in Andra Day ‘s “Rise Up,” released in 2015.

In the song, Day reminds us to rise up each day to work past the challenges that life brings. No matter how insurmountable the challenges appear, we should keep fighting and believe that we can overcome them.

Here, hope is an important factor. The lyrics say, “All we need is hope, And for that we have each other.” Even if we experience misery and hardships, we must hold on to hope. It will help us rise and overcome adversity.

7. “Eye Of The Tiger” By Survivor

The 1982 classic “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor first gained popularity as the theme song of the film Rocky III . This one bears the message of resilience, determination, and tenacity in the face of adversity.

The song uses the metaphor of the tiger’s eye to symbolize the importance of focusing on your goals even when faced with challenges. The title represents going after your goals without giving up, no matter how tough life becomes.

If you’re going through personal struggles, the song reminds you to look within yourself for that strength to go through anything. It tells you to rise from failures and keep your eye on the prize, just like a tiger stalking its prey.

8. “Defying Gravity” By Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth

Up next, we have “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked . Performed by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth , the song embodies the spirit of overcoming obstacles.

Wicked is a retelling of The Wizard of Oz and focuses on the story of the witches of Oz. In the musical, it is sung by Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. The song is about her refusal to conform to societal expectations.

Elphaba wants to embrace her uniqueness and will “try defying gravity,” even if it means losing love or being misunderstood by others. She is determined that no one can bring her down in her pursuit of her own path.

This is not easy, but it takes one special soul to find the strength within herself to defy the odds and go against the grain in following her dream.

9. “The Comeback” By Danny Gokey

Most times, it takes our resilience and determination to overcome obstacles. This is the same message that Danny Gokey imparts in his 2017 single, “The Comeback.”

In the lyrics, the narrator tells us about the challenges and hardships that life throws our way. He acknowledges how tough and heartbreaking these obstacles can be.

But instead of focusing on the hardship, the song brings the focus on the good things that come out of our struggles. We can experience growth and renewal by never giving up and relying on God. And even if the going gets tough, we can always rely on a comeback.

10. “Keep Holding On” By Avril Lavigne

When we go through difficult times, having a friend who stands by our side and lends a helping hand makes all the difference. That’s what Avril Lavigne tells us through her 2006 single “Keep Holding On.”

As the title suggests, the song reminds us not to give up in the face of adversity. It says that we can overcome obstacles by persevering and with the support of our true friends. It’s tough having to face difficulties alone, so it’s a huge thing to have someone who will encourage us to never give up.

“Keep Holding On” also serves as a beacon of hope for people going through emotional pain or depression. It gives us reassurance that there will always be better days to come. With hope, we can make it through the darkest days.

11. “Not Afraid” By Eminem

Rapper and songwriter Eminem is no stranger to a difficult life. He often talks about his experiences in his songs, such as “Not Afraid” from his album Recovery .

This empowering song finds Eminem declaring that he’s not afraid to face challenges and make life changes. For many of you who don’t know, Eminem co-wrote the song at a time when he was recovering from drug addiction. Thus, he knows what he’s talking about when he says, “I’m not afraid… To take a stand.”

The song is a testament to his resilience and, at the same time, a call to action for people to face their own problems head-on. It may not be easy, but we overcome obstacles by pushing through no matter what.

12. “Stronger” By Sam Feldt

Humans possess an inner strength that they can harness when dealing with difficulties. This is the strength that Dutch DJ Sam Feldt and American singer Kesha refer to in their 2021 collab “Stronger.”

This empowering anthem focuses on how to overcome obstacles and how it can make you more resilient. The song explores themes of self-growth through adversity, reminding us to “take it day by day.”

Just like the narrator’s claim, we need to move forward and push through because this is the only way “if you wanna get stronger.” The song also reminds us that hardships are opportunities to improve ourselves.

13. “Win” By Brian McKnight

If there’s a song that we can make as a personal anthem for overcoming obstacles, Brian McKnight ‘s “Win” is a perfect choice. The song speaks of resilience and perseverance to win in life.

The lyrics tell us that an unyielding determination, persistence, and a positive mindset can help us overcome any obstacle. It begins with us believing in what we can do when faced with adversity.

So when hard times come, it becomes easier to face them. We know we “can weather the storm” if we “never quit.” The song also highlights the importance of holding on to hope and faith to win over any hurdle.

14. “A Little Bit Stronger” By Sara Evans

Little by little, that’s how we move on. Sara Evans ‘ “A Little Bit Stronger” explores themes of resilience and personal growth following an emotional heartbreak.

We know how painful a breakup can be. Sometimes, it’s so painful that others find themselves in a depressive state. In the same way, the narrator of the song is at a point in her life where almost everything reminds her of her ex-lover.

However, she is determined to move on from the pain. It isn’t easy, but she finds strength in these reminders. Instead of letting them break her further, she uses them as stepping stones to become stronger and more resilient.

15. “Hold On” By Kansas

The progressive rock band Kansas released “Hold On” in 1980. Although the band’s primary songwriter, Kerry Livgren, wrote it to convince his wife to convert to Christianity with him, the message is about our ability to endure and overcome obstacles.

In the lyrics, the narrator urges listeners to keep fighting despite the challenges and embrace change. Like the narrator, we must contemplate the lessons we learn from life to guide us as we face future struggles.

As the narrator repeatedly tells us, “Hold on,” it reminds us to be resilient, strong, and steadfast. Above all, he encourages us to have faith in Him, who provides strength and guidance in times of weakness.

16. “Carry On” By Fun

Another song that explores themes of resilience and perseverance in overcoming obstacles is “Carry On” by the pop-rock band Fun.

In the lyrics, the narrator encourages us to keep moving forward despite challenges. This suggests the importance of having a positive outlook, which can guide us through difficult times.

The narrator also urges us to carry on when life gets tough. If we’re sinking and “lost and alone,” we must remain steadfast.

Furthermore, the song highlights the importance of hope and how it can help us overcome adversity and come out stronger.

17. “Don’t Lose Sight” By Lawrence

Feeling down? Frustrated? Dismayed? The eight-piece soul-pop band Lawrence has something to lift out spirits in “Don’t Lose Sight.”

At its core, this song is about perseverance and determination. Left and right, we are bombarded by negativity that it’s so easy to fall victim to haters.

The band reminds their listeners to always stay strong and ignore haters. The focus must be on our goals and dreams and achieving them no matter how daunting the obstacles may be. The band furthers that these challenges should fire us to strive and fight harder in order to overcome obstacles along the way.

18. “I Hope You Dance” By Lee Ann Womack & Sons Of The Desert

The inspirational song “I Hope You Dance” carries a beautiful message about overcoming obstacles and living life to the fullest. Performed by Lee Ann Womack and Sons of the Desert , the song explores themes of love, hope, and the will to dance through life’s challenges.

Thematically, the narrator makes a heartfelt wish for a loved one, whether children, family, or friends, as they navigate life and its ups and downs. She urges them to take chances, hold on to faith, and not allow hardship to veer them off their path.

But above all, the narrator wishes for them to always choose to dance. It means embracing life with enthusiasm and having a positive mindset despite the difficulties.

19. “You’re Gonna Be OK” By Brian & Jenn Johnson

We often hear the words “You’re going to be okay” whenever we’re going through difficulties. That’s because it’s true, as Brian & Jenn Johnson attest in their song “You’re Gonna Be OK.”

The song was deeply personal, as Jenn Johnson wrote it at a time of difficulty. With the song, she aims to encourage others to be strong and trust God that the hardship will pass. The title serves as a mantra of reassurance, reflecting her belief that we can rise above difficulties.

In addition, the song focuses on hope and perseverance, as found in the line, “I know it’s all you’ve got to just be strong.” It suggests that we must face trials head-on with courage and determination.

20. “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” By Whitney Houston

We’ve all failed at some point in our lives. We’ve gone through such difficult times that we tumbled and felt like we couldn’t stand back up. We can turn to Whitney Houston ‘s “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” an anthem about overcoming adversity.

The lyrics reflect the journey of someone who has faced challenges and come out stronger. She has not crumbled, though, in those times, she lost sight of her goals and thought there was no hope to hang on to.

But she is stronger than she gives herself credit for. It surprises her how she’s able to come through and get past hardship and trials. She finds within herself the strength to rise from failure and succeed once again.

21. “The Climb” By Miley Cyrus

You can get yourself motivated to overcome all obstacles by listening to Miley Cyrus ‘ “The Climb.” This anthem teaches us about perseverance, resilience, and our journey to achieve our dreams.

The song highlights the fact that the journey is as important as the destination. By going through challenges and obstacles, we learn to be strong and not give up. Knowing how to harness the strength within us and use trials to push us toward our goals adds value to our lives.

The song is a testament to our will to endure and rise above challenges. No matter how high or how many mountains appear before us, we can climb it and get on the other side because we have faith that we can do it.

22. “Keep Your Head Up” By Andy Grammer

The debut single “Keep Your Head Up” by Andy Grammer speaks to everyone who is struggling. But with perseverance, we can get through anything.

Though this is not a song with “overcoming obstacles” in the title, it is synonymous with keeping your head up. In the lyrics, the narrator is going through some really tough times, with bills piling up and making it difficult to live a comfortable life. This is nothing new to us, and we do our best to make ends meet.

But when life gets hard, it’s how we respond to it that truly defines us. When we are faced with obstacles, we need to keep our heads up and remember that we’re going to be all right.

23. “Courage Is” By The Strange Familiar

In “Courage Is…” by The Strange Familiar , courage is defined not as the absence of fear. It is one’s decision to carry on despite the fear.

The lyrics revolve around the theme of overcoming obstacles by being courageous. It’s when you’re afraid and in pain, but you continue and move on. Courage gives you the strength to face your obstacles head-on and push through them.

The song also uses the metaphor of a bird with broken wings for a person going through adversity. It suggests that our worth is determined by our perseverance and holding on to hope when we deal with challenges.

Summing Up Our List Of Overcoming Obstacles Songs

What our list showed you today is our inherent tenacity, strength, and resilience when faced with obstacles. We stumble at times and even feel like giving up from the weight of our problems. But there is that inner strength that we can always count on to push past these challenges.

You, too, have the strength to triumph over struggles. May the songs above remind us to always persevere and keep a positive mindset despite the hardships. That’s how we’re going to succeed and rise above our trials.

11 Must-Hear, Problematic Problem Songs | Playlist 🎧

Published by the musical hype on september 11, 2020 september 11, 2020, ‘11 must-hear, problematic problem songs’ features music by 6lack, ariana grande, delli boe, jay-z & sabrina claudio.  .

P roblem , noun. 1a: A question raised for inquiry, consideration, or solution… 2a: An intricate, unsettled question… 2b: A source of perplexity, distress, or vexation.  The aforementioned are just some of the definitions, via Merriam-Webster , for the word problem , the keyword on 11 MUST-HEAR, PROBLEMATIC PROBLEM SONGS .  Lots of songs have been written explicitly and implicitly surrounding various problems – situations. In the case of this particular list, such problems will be explicit as the word MUST be featured in the song title.  There are many more than 11 songs, but we’re going to keep things nice and tight here.

So, who did we enlist to provide the tunes for 11 MUST-HEAR, PROBLEMATIC PROBLEM SONGS? Glad you asked! How about the likes of 6LACK , Ariana Grande (featuring Iggy Azalea , mind you), Delli Boe , Jay-Z , and Sabrina Claudio ? There is no shortage of must-hear bops here, so without further ado, let’s jump right into these winning problematic songs, shall we!

1. Katy Perry, “Champagne Problems”

Smile • capitol • 2020.

Katy Perry, Smile [Photo Credit: Capitol]

“‘Cause, baby all we got (All we got are) Are champagne problems now (That's all we got) ‘Cause, baby, all we got (All we got are) Are champagne problems now.”

2. Delli Boe, “Bisexual Problems”

“bisexual problems” • delli boe • 2018.

Delli Boe, “Bisexual Problems” [Photo Credit: Delli Boe]

After the minimalist production establishes itself, so does Delli Boe, honestly.  I mean, the opening lyrics from “Bisexual Problems” are definitely ‘in your face’:

“Even though I like boys would ya still let me hit If I eat yo pussy would ya still stuck my dick Baby, I’ll take yo soul if I lick on yo clit You ain’t ever met a n***a who did it like this.”

Woo! It doesn’t stop there, but you can listen and read the rest of the sexually charged lyrics for yourself.  Basically, he personally won’t turn down experiences with guys or girls and he wants to know if you’d be cool with that. Add it to the collection LGBTQ+ 🌈 songs if nothing else.   Hopefully, Delli Boe being safe during these various sexual encounters. Wrap it up!

3. Ariana Grande, “Problem”

Ft. Iggy Azalea

My Everything • Republic • 2014

Ariana Grande, My Everything © Republic

Focusing on “Problem,” there is no shortage of swagger, absolutely sick vocals (Ari), and potent rhymes (Iggy). Notably, Grande was dating Big Sean at the time.  He appears on the album, including providing the pivotal chant, “I got one less problem without you,” on the this undisputed, totally unproblematic urban-pop smash.

4. Arizona Zervas, “Drinking Problem”

“drinking problem” • arizona zervas • 2019.

Arizona Zervas, “Drinking Problem” [Photo Credit: Arizona Zervas]

Apparently, Zona’s girl accused him of having issues with alcohol. He denies them – well – sort of:

“She said I got a drinking problem But I don’t got no problem drinking, though I solve my problems with the bottle And drink until I feel my face no more.”

So, he DOES in fact have a problem with the bottle, using it to cope essentially. Similarly, on the second verse, 27CLUB is in the same boat:

“Bad habits, I smoke it like I’m a drug addict I try to quit but seemingly I’m not good at it Fucked up rock star in a denim jacket Bury me with some roses inside a leather casket.”

Ultimately, both artists are on the struggle bus and even if they try to curb the problem, they just can’t seem to. Now that, my friends, is indeed a problem.

5. Chance the Rapper, “No Problem”

Ft. Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz

Coloring Book • Chance the Rapper • 2016

Chance The Rapper, Coloring Book © Chance The Rapper

Chance The Rapper is assisted by Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz on this gem. The aforementioned chorus is catchy, infectious, and utterly sweet.  All of the verses – one per rapper – definitely yield NO PROBLEM(s) whatsoever. Following Chance’s verse, even the hella dumb 2 Chainz manages to rein himself in 😂.  That’s not to say he doesn’t say some silly stuff on the second verse such as “Run shit like diarrhea (True)” – lol. Of course, we get some sexual references from Lil Wayne, such as “Pretty bitches / Tippy toes around my crib in they robes, just their robes.” No comment!

6. Nick Jonas, “Champagne Problems”

Last year was complicated • island • 2016.

Nick Jonas, Last Year Was Complicated © Island

“Champagne Problems,” a song where misery is best drowned in alcohol (“I hate to see you cry, so let’s drink before goodbye”), is by no means a miserable listen.  Nick sounds looser than ever, despite the tension characterized within the record.

7. Sabrina Claudio, “Problem with You”

Truth is • sc entertainment • 2019.

Sabrina Claudio, Truth Is [Photo Credit: SC Entertainment]

On the first verse, she begins by addressing her own problems, inquiring first, “Was I cold?” Similarly, on the second verse, she examines her own issues while being with him. Of course, she shifts to the source of the problems – HIM! On the pre-chorus, she’s so infatuated and paranoid, she’s quite possibly getting in her own way with her love:

“Let’s talk about last night, you went to sleep Didn’t even talk to me You left me with questions, agonizing You bring out the worst in me.”

On the bridge, she comes right out and blames him for putting her through this.  Do we ever determine if he’s ‘no good’ or if Sabrina is just scared, she’s going to lose him? No, but this is a relatable song for anyone who’s been in a relationship, particularly one where you question the commitment to some degree for whatever reason.

8. 6LACK, “PRBLMS”

Free 6lack • interscope • 2016.

6LACK, FREE 6LACK [Photo Credit: Interscope]

Even though 6LACK is at least partially responsible, he’s not fully committed to it 24/7. On the chorus he asserts, “I got real shit to stress about, girl, I ain’t worried ‘bout shit,” before admitting, “So, I found a new thang, I’m not as lost as you think / Got plenty of queens in my hometown, all they need is drank and that good dank.” Here’s the thing.  Having a high maintenance boy- or girlfriend isn’t optimal.  That said, 6LACK also seems like he’s in a vicious cycle of problems because he indulges in various, um, ‘side pieces’ you might say.

9. A$AP Rocky, “F**kin’ Problems”

Ft. Drake, 2 Chainz & Kendrick Lamar

Long.Live.A$AP • RCA • 2013

A$AP Rocky, Long. Live. A$AP © RCA

Drake brags on the second verse, “Ain’t heard my new album? Who you sleepin’ on? You should print the lyrics out and have a fuckin’ read along…” Kendrick Lamar kills it on the final verse: “She eying me like a n***a don’t exist / Girl, I know you want this di-.”  No ‘fuckin’ problems’ with this mega hit!

10. Kevin Abstract, “American Problem”

Arizona baby • rca • 2019.

Kevin Abstract, ARIZONA BABY [Photo Credits: QUESTION EVERYTHING / RCA]

“American Problem” finds Abstract reflecting on his past, as well as his current reality.  Part of that includes being gay, something that has been a prevalent theme in his previous work, not to mention the work of BROCKHAMPTON. On the second verse, he states, “And all my girlfriends, they tell me / ‘Well, you would’ve been better if you picked someone who was just like you’.” He also goes on to say:

“I thought a brother was cut... I was a flaming faggot, that’s when the principal called me Not to my face, but I felt when I was stuck in his office I’m just a, I’m just another American problem...”

Quite a unique listen, the production work is distinct, while Abstract’s vocals are pitch-shifted at times, and there’s singing and rapping. “American Problem” previously appeared on 15 Must-Hear, All-American Songs and A Compendium Comprised of 100 Notable LGBTQ+ Songs .

11. Jay-Z, “99 Problems”

The black album • roc nation • 2003.

Jay-z, The Black Album [Photo Credit: Roc-A-Fella]

“99 Problems” features some stellar rapping from Hov with plenty of ‘real talk.’ He’s confident and definitely sticks up both middle fingers to the haters.  Perhaps my favorite example: “I’m like, ‘Fuck critics, you can kiss my whole asshole!’” He doesn’t stop there, as he tells a story of being stopped by ‘Jake’ (white police officer) on the second verse, which has a number of different layers to unpack in all honesty. The third verse is colorful as well, with ample wordplay and even some lines that make you scratch your head.  What I can safely say is that there’s no problems whatsoever with “99 Problems.” Produced by Rick Rubin with a rap-rock backdrop and some great samples, “99 Problems” is iconic.

6 YouTube channels for developing your problem solving skills [Technique Tuesdays]

These were the channels that help me study and sharpen my problem solving skills.

youtube problem solving song

Hey, it’s your favorite cult leader here 🐱‍👤

On Tuesdays, I will cover problem-solving techniques that show up in software engineering, computer science, and Leetcode Style Questions📚📚📝📝.

To get access to all the full articles and support my writing, consider subscribing if you haven’t already!

p.s. you can learn more about the  benefits of the paid plan here .

How can you improve your problem-solving skills?

There are many steps needed. You need to study the underlying concepts. You need to recognize the various techniques and when they are applied. And you need to do practice problems. When you start practice problems, you need to balance both the quality (difficulty of each problem) and the quantity of problems you solve

Sounds a like a bit much doesn’t it?

Luckily, there is a way to make things much easier. Watch experts solve the problem, and see how they progress between steps. Learning from the best can boost your learning journey. In this email/post, I will be covering some of the YouTube channels that I use regularly to sharpen my problem-solving skills. The most important tip is at the very end of the list, so make you sure you read all the way through

Great Channels you should Subscribe to

Byte by Bte- When it comes to Leetcode-related videos, Sam is one of the best in the game. He’s got a gift for describing complicated topics simply and he posts streams where he solves Leetcode problems live. Watching people problem solve live is great because you can compare their process to yours, and thus identify how you can do much better. Watch his most recent episode here . His switch from top-down to bottom-up DP was spectacular.

Back to Back SWE - A great channel to mix techniques and conceptual computer science. His template to solving backtracking problems was very useful , and I actually based my recursive function template on it.

Abdul Bari - Focuses more on the concepts, but his way of presenting information is great to help you apply the ideas he teaches in your own solutions. A must watch, especially if you are a college student.

Ryan Schachte - The best Computer Science visualizations. His videos are useful, visual, and comprehensible. Would highly recommend that you watch his video on the Sliding Window Algorithm and take a lot of notes. I will be covering it on this channel as well.

MindYourDecisions - Presh Talwalkar studied Math and Economics at Stanford. He posts math problems, brainteasers, interview questions, logic puzzles, viral math problems, and interesting topics suggested by viewers from around the world. Most of his videos don’t require advanced math knowledge but do require very advanced problem-solving skills. You’ll see him use a lot of the techniques I cover here (remember Math and Software Engineering require very similar neural pathways).

TED-Ed - The TED foundation needs no introduction. They have done a great service in educating humanity. Their Educational Channel, TED-Ed, has an exceptional collection of riddles, that you can solve here . These riddles work your problem-solving skills without requiring prior knowledge. Working those riddles is a great way to boost your education.

As you practice these problems, don’t forget to also get out there and move. Hard. Scientists have studied multiple things to maintain and boost brain function. These include food, sudokus, chess, meditation etc. Exercise has consistently been the strongest and most reliable method for maintaining and sharpening your brain function. If you haven’t today, put your screen down, get out there, and train.

Still not convinced? Watch the talk below for more.

Is YouTube not working? Have no fear, we'll get you back to watching those cat videos soon enough. It's possible that YouTube is down for everyone, but the problem is more likely on your end.

Whether videos are endlessly buffering, the YouTube app isn't loading, or something else entirely, our troubleshooting steps for desktop and mobile should help you get YouTube working again.

First, Check If YouTube Is Down

The first thing to check before anything else is whether the problem is with YouTube itself, rather than anything on your side. It's rare for YouTube to have a complete outage, but it does happen.

Downdetector crowdsources user reports showing you what issues are being reported and from where in the world. It's a handy way to see if YouTube is down for everyone or just you.

YouTube page on Downdetector

When YouTube has major downtime, news outlets will report on it. The quickest way to check is by going to Google News and searching for "YouTube down" or "YouTube outage".

Additionally, browse YouTube's social media channels, like @TeamYouTube on Twitter, for first-hand updates from the company.

If YouTube is down, all you can do is wait it out. Otherwise, have you established that YouTube is working for others? If so, crack on with these troubleshooting steps.

How to Fix YouTube on Desktop

If you're using YouTube on a desktop browser, follow these steps to try to fix YouTube.

1. Update Your Browser

You should always use the most up-to-date version of your browser. Most popular browsers like Chrome and Firefox should automatically update, but it's always best to double-check this.

For Chrome, paste chrome://settings/help into the URL bar and press Enter . You should see "Chrome is up to date." If you don't, the latest build will automatically download. Once it's finished, click Relaunch .

about chrome settings page

For other browsers, see our guide on how to update your web browser .

2. Clear Your Cookies and Cache

Try clearing your cookies and cache to clean out the browser.

  • Paste chrome://settings/clearBrowserData into the URL bar and press Enter .
  • On the Time range dropdown, select All time .
  • Check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files .
  • Click Clear data .

chrome clear browsing data

For other browsers, read our guide on how to delete internet cookies .

3. Disable Your Extensions

Browser extensions can cause compatibility problems with YouTube.

To view your extensions in Chrome, paste chrome://extensions/ in the URL bar and press Enter .

google chrome extensions

For each extension in turn, toggle the slider left to disable it. After each, try YouTube again and see if the issue is resolved. If it is, keep the extension disabled and contact the developer to see if they can patch the issue.

For other browsers, check out our guide on how to clean up your browser extensions .

4. Update Your Video Drivers

If your video drivers are outdated, it can cause issues playing videos. Try updating them to see it resolves the issue.

If you're using Windows 10 or 11, first grab the latest drivers from your graphic card manufacturer's website (likely AMD , NVIDIA , or Intel .)

Then do the following:

  • Press Windows key + X and click Device Manager .
  • Double click Display adapters .
  • Right-click your graphics card and click Update driver .
  • Click Search automatically for drivers and follow the wizard through.

windows device manager update graphics

For more support, refer to our guide on how to update your Windows graphics drivers .

On macOS, you just need to ensure you're using the latest operating system version. Do this via Apple logo > System Preferences > Software Update .

5. Troubleshoot Your Internet Connection

Even if you can access other websites, it doesn't mean your internet connection isn't at fault. It might not be stable enough to stream YouTube.

Windows has a native troubleshooter to detect and resolve problems. To find it, press Windows key + I to open Settings, then:

  • On Windows 10, go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Internet Connections > Run the troubleshooter .
  • On Windows 11, go to System > Troubleshoot > Other trouble-shooters > Internet Connections > Run .

If this doesn't work, see our article on diagnosing a network problem for more advice.

windows 11 other troubleshooters

If you're using a Mac, follow the steps in our macOS internet connection troubleshooting guide .

How to Fix YouTube on Android and iOS

If you're using YouTube on an Android or iOS device (like an iPhone or iPad), try these troubleshooting steps.

There are many versions of Android. When following the instructions below, you may find that some menu items have slightly different labels. If you struggle to get to the right screen, use your device's search function.

1. Update the Operating System

Your operating system may be outdated and thus YouTube is unable to run correctly.

On Android, open Settings and look for Software update (or System update .) It might be within an About phone section. If there's a new version available, download and install it.

android settings with software update highlighted

On iOS, go to Settings > General > Software update and download and install an update if there's one available.

2. Update the YouTube App

You should always use the latest version of the YouTube app so that you benefit from new features and bug fixes.

On Android, open the Play Store , tap your profile icon , and select Manage apps and device . Next, tap Updates pending and, if YouTube is here, tap Update .

play store menu with manage apps and device highlighted

On iOS, open the App Store , tap your profile icon , and scroll down to Available Updates . If you see YouTube on this list, tap Update .

3. Clear the YouTube App Cache and Data

If you've used the YouTube app for a while, a large amount of cache and data may have accumulated and be causing issues.

On Android, go to Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage . Tap Clear cache and see if it fixes the problem. If not, return to the same screen and tap Clear data .

android apps

On iOS, the best way to do this is to uninstall and reinstall YouTube. Press and hold the app on your home screen and tap Remove App > Delete App . Then head to the App Store and download YouTube again.

4. Sync the Date and Time

The YouTube app can be glitchy if your device's date and time is out of alignment with that of the YouTube server. The best way to resolve this is to allow your network to automatically handle the date and time.

On Android, go to Settings > General management > Date and time and slide Automatic date and time to On .

android general management

On iOS, go to Settings > General > Date & Time and slide Set Automatically to On .

5. Reset Your Internet Connection

YouTube might not work if your internet is struggling to connect properly. On Android, go to Settings > Connections . On iOS, open Control Center .

First, turn Flight mode on and off. This can often refresh your network settings and solve the problem. Next, switch your connection method to Wi-Fi or your cellular network (whichever one you aren't currently using.) If this doesn't work, disable Bluetooth.

Still no luck? You can reset your network connection entirely. On Android, go to Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings .

android general management

On iOS, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset > Reset Network Settings .

If All Else Fails, Contact Google

Now you've followed these instructions, hopefully YouTube or the YouTube app is working again. If it isn't, contact Google for further support.

If this experience has soured your view of YouTube, there are plenty of alternative video sites ready to drain your time.

10 Wordless Videos that Teach Problem Solving

Education · Tips

I work in teletherapy, which means that I use a computer to display my materials and activities for my students. I have a couple extremely quiet older elementary students and I decided that video was a way to engage and encourage them to answer questions and retell events. In particular I wanted them to think about solving hypothetical problems. I found 10 WORDLESS videos on YouTube that show interesting problems and make kids think about how to solve a problem — and they have to provide the language!

youtube problem solving song

10 Wordless Videos I Love

  • Piper Short Movie — A baby bird finds a way to survive a big wave.
  • Ormie the Pig — A pig attempts to get a jar of cookies off of the top of the fridge.
  • Let Me In! — Simon’s cat wants to come inside and makes some bad decisions!
  • Sweet Cocoon — Figuring out how to fit in your cocoon is hard work.
  • Rollin Safari  — What would animals be like if they were round?
  • Embarked — Should a tree house follow its friend? (minimal English words at the end)
  • TV Dinner — What should you do if your cat won’t leave you alone? (Simon’s cat)
  • Playmate — An old robot toy wants to play. Will the boy play with it?
  • Birds on a Wire  — Learn how you should treat others (that are different than you)
  • Sticky Tape — What should the cat do when tape is sticking to him? (Simon’s cat)

Since it’s YouTube, so you must preview each video and usually there is an ad in front of it. I would get each video cued up (after the ad) and then share it with students. You will be surprised how much language you will get from your quietest kids as they figure out how to solve the characters’ problems. Enjoy!

Just wanted to point out that the movie “Fat” might not be too appropriate for kids if you pay attention to the details….

Thank you for commenting. The title is off-putting, but when viewed the short, I saw that the animals turn into balloons and float around. If you feel like that is not appropriate for your students, you can omit sharing that with them.

I wasn’t meaning the title. I was meaning the part where the cow he was milking floats away and then he ‘milks’ a bull…

Homelessness is a pervasive issue that cities across the country struggle to address. This led an entrepreneur to team up with researchers and local foundations for an experiment called the Denver Basic Income Project. The goal was to see how different variations of a basic income program would impact the local homeless population. What the researchers found could become a guide for how localities in the United States could address the problem of homelessness.
