17 Malayalam Films Of 2020 We’re Really Excited About

Malayalam cinema has a busy 2020. You can't classify films into easy categories, when the line-up includes a grand historical, a superhero film, a biopic, a film adaptation of a much-loved mini-series, and even one that looks like it has a lot to do with psychedelics. It's also going to be a year of much-awaited comebacks. Bhadran returns after 14 years, Santhosh Sivan after seven, Blessy after five, and AR Rahman after 28 long years. With big budget films such as Marakkar, and potentially tiny gems like Halal Love Story , Malayalam cinema might give us some of the most exciting films of the year.

Aadujeevitham

Benyamin's celebrated novel finally becomes a film, with director Blessy making a comeback after five years. Prithviraj , who had a terrific year in 2019, is currently in the process of losing a whole lot of weight to play Najeeb, an immigrant worker/slave trapped in Saudi Arabia. The fact that AR Rahman returns to Malayalam cinema 28 years after Yoda adds to the buzz.

Sidharth Bharathan, who made the sinfully-underrated Varnaythil Aashanka and the hit Chandrettan Evideya , has the fascinatingly titled Djinn releasing this year. It stars Soubin Shahir and Nimisha Sajayan, and promises to be that rare horror film (after Ezra ) worth looking forward to.

Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham

Arguably, the biggest film of the year will see Mohanlal and Priyadarshan join hands for a historical epic, 24 years after the blockbuster Kalapaani. Touted to be the most expensive Malayalam film yet, it assembles a multi-industry star cast, which includes Suneil Shetty, Arjun, Manju Warrier , Keerthi Suresh and Ashok Selvan, besides cameos by Mohanlal's son Pranav and Priyadarshan's daughter Kalyani.

Minnal Murali

Malayalam cinema looks like it's finally ready for a legit superhero movie in Basil Joseph's Minnal Murali, starring Tovino Thomas . The first look is brilliant and so is the promise of some breathtaking stunts, courtesy Vlad Rimburg, who worked on films such as Sultan and Baahubali 2. Parakkum Pappan, starring Dileep, might just be the second superhero film of the year.

Ayyappanum Koshiyum

Writer Sachi, the mind behind some great comic writing in the recent hit Driving License, reunites with his Anarkali leads Prithviraj and Biju Menon for this comedy. Is it a road movie? Is it an odd-couple comedy? We'll have to wait to find out.

Superstars in Malayalam seldom get to play Chief Ministers, in real life or in the movies. Directed by the promising Santosh Viswanathan, who made Malayalam cinema's first spoof film, One may just be the political fantasy we hardly get to see in the language.

Jeethu Joseph gets together with Mohanlal after Drishyam in a big-budget, international thriller. Will it become one of the biggest hits of the year or will there be a twist in the end?

One of Malayalam television's biggest success stories and the legendary historical figure said to possess supernatural powers gets its own film in Kathanar, starring the ever-dependable Jayasurya. The period film will be scripted by R Ramanand and directed by Robin Thomas.

It wouldn't be unfair to call Kurup the most 'wanted' film DQ is working on in 2020. We saw glimpses of an anti-hero in his earlier film Theevram, but with Kurup what we get is a film on one of one of Kerala's most iconic supervillains/criminal masterminds. Will it be a sympathetic take or will it glamourise a monster? Let the debates begin.

Thera Para-The Movie

What will happen when you give one of the biggest recent pop-culture phenomena a film of their own? Unforgettable punchlines ( nisaram, nisaram !), iconic characters in their elements, a thorough thread running through and some rib-tickling sketches are the least we can expect as we wait to see if these micro-screen giants will remain giants on the big screen as well.

Jack And Jill

Legendary cinematographer Santosh Sivan makes a Malayalam after Urumi, this time a thriller with Manju Warrier and Kalidas Jayaram.  Other cast members in the fim, also being produced by Sivan, include Aju Varghese and Soubin Shahir .

Halal Love Story

Sudani From Nigeria was one of the sweetest films of the last decade. With Halal Love Story, writers Muhsin Parari and Zakariya get together again for a drama (where food plays an integral part) to be directed by the latter. The cast includes fine actors like Joju George, Indrajith and Sharufudeen.

Editor-director Mahesh Narayanan, who made the spectacular Take Off, has Malik, starring Fahadh Faasil, slotted for the first half of this year. During the film's launch, reports suggested that the film was being made at a budget of over Rs. 25 crore, among the biggest this year. The cast also includes Joju George, Vinay Forrt and Nimisha Sajayan.

The film that started it all, and one of Malayalam cinema's most stylish characters Big-B finally gets a sequel, Bilal . Amal Neerad is expected to join hands with DoP Sameer Thahir for the sequel as well. Gopi Sundar's infectious BGM is sure to make a return too, and let's hope Bilal remains the same-old Bilal in the sequel as well.

Thuramukham

We all saw what Nivin Pauly is really capable of in the hands of an able director in the recent Mothoon . Yet, one feels he is rarely challenged to play to his full potential. Of his 2020 lineup, his collaboration with Rajeev Ravi seems most exciting. Based on the controversial 'chappa' system of the 1950s in the Cochin harbour, the film evokes the feeling of our very own On The Waterfront.

Captivating is the first word that comes to mind when one sees the first-look poster of Bhadran's Joothan . The director makes a film 14 years after Udayon, with a script he is said to have worked on for over 35 years. The mysterious film may end up becoming polarising, like most of this director's films, but it will be intriguing for sure.

If Markkar might be the most exciting film for Malayalam cinema's previous generation, Trance, with an enviable cast and crew ( Fahadh Faasil , Nazriya Nazim, Soubin Shahir, Vinayakan) , is THE film to watch out for the Malayali Millennial. The first look posters are wild, adding fire to some wilder theories going around about the film's plot. Is it about magic, is it about drugs, is it about something spiritual? It's hard to question the ambition of a film when it's being directed by someone as successful as Anwar Rasheed.   get prons relationsrom

Trance Movie Review: Fahadh Faasil Is The Heart & Soul Of This Gutsy Film!

Trance is a Malayalam drama film that features Fahadh Faasil in the lead role. The movie marks the comeback of popular filmmaker Anwar Rasheed after a long gap of 8 years. Nazriya Nazim appears as the female lead opposite Fahadh Faasil in Trance , which is scripted by Vincent Vadakkan.

Did the Fahadh Faasil-Anwar Rasheed project live up to expectations? Read Trance movie review here to know...

Trance Movie Review | Trance Review And Rating | Trance Critics Review | Trance Review

Viju Prasad (Fahadh Faasil) is a struggling motivational speaker from Kanyakumari. Viju relocates to Mumbai after an unfortunate incident turns his life upside down. In Mumbai, he meets Rozario (Gautham Menon) and Gilbert (Chemban Vinod Jose) and joins them, taking the new identity of Pastor Joshua Carlton. Meanwhile, he also crosses paths with Esther Lopez (Nazriya Nazim). What happens to Viju's life after his new friendships in Mumbai forms the crux of the story.

Script & Direction

Director Anwar Rasheed and writer Vincent Vadakkan truly deserve a big applause for making Trance , which is unarguably one of the bravest films ever made in Malayalam so far. The movie deals with a highly sensitive topic with utmost sensibility. The first half of the movie is totally on point with the engaging narrative, great style, amazing visuals, and perfect pace.

But, the second half doesn't quite match up with the standards set by the excellent first half. Even though the extremely stylish making saves the show, the second half loses its grip at certain points, especially when it comes to the picturing of Joshua's thought process. Also, the Joshua-Esther track looks forced and dragged.

However, Trance is nothing like you have seen or experienced in the Malayalam cinema before. Even if the Anwar Rasheed directorial might not be everyone's cup of tea, this gutsy film will surely impress the audiences who love unique movie experiences.

Performances

Trance Movie Review | Trance Review And Rating | Trance Critics Review | Trance Review

Fahadh Faasil is one of those rare actors who constantly reinvents himself with every passing film. The National Award winner's brilliant performance is unarguably the heart and soul of Trance . Fahadh truly astonishes in the role of Viju Prasad with his impeccable acting skills and unmatchable energy. The actor once again proves that he is one of the finest actors of Indian cinema.

Nazriya Nazim has finally shed her bubbly, girl next door image with the character Esther Lopez, and has played her part perfectly. Gautham Menon, the filmmaker who appears as Rozario, has excelled in his part. The rest of the star cast, including Soubin Shahir, Dileesh Pothan, Chemban Vinod Jose, Vinayakan, Sreenath Bhasi, Arjun Ashokan, Unnimaya Prasad, and so on, have played their respective roles to near perfection.

Technical Aspects

Amal Neerad once again proves he is one of the best cinematographers we have, with the extraordinary visuals of Trance . The brilliant cinematography makes the Anwar Rasheed directorial a visually-enthralling theatre experience. Praveen Prabhakar's editing is not up to the mark, as the movie loses its pace in the second half.

Jackson Vijayan makes a fantastic debut with the unique soundtrack of the movie, which totally goes hand-in-hand with the narrative. The background score by Jackson Vijayan and Sushin Shyam is just fantastic and completely elevates the overall experience.

Trance is a gutsy attempt and a totally unique movie experience. Watch it for the brilliant performances by the star cast, especially Fahadh Faasil, and the extraordinary theatre experience. But, this Anwar Rasheed movie is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

Veeyen Unplugged

Cinema, Culture & More

Trance (2020) Malayalam Movie Review – Veeyen

‘Trance’ does address a theme that is radically important and proffers a compelling investigation into the unexplored realms of religion, faith and belief. But it’s also a movie that eventually gets choked by the mistiness that pervades its plot and design, and ends up a pale shadow of the head turner flick that it should have been.

malayalam movie review 2020

The opening frames of Anwar Rasheed’s ‘Trance’ set on the sandy shores of Kanyakumari follows Viju Prasad (Fahadh Faasil),  a self proclaimed motivational trainer who works as a waiter at a restaurant and who hopes to strike gold some day as a speaker who could influence a million lives. Leafing through the pages of Peale’s ‘Power of Positive Thinking’, he readily looks forward to those days that he believes are just round those sunny streets that he rides his bike on, and hangs on despite his life and the turbulent events in it suggesting otherwise.

Far away from the rocky piers of the Cape, Viju is almost lost in the multitudes that throng the brightly lit roads of Mumbai, where he starts working as a courier boy. As luck would have it, his home videos catch the attention of Solomon (Gautham Menon) and Isaac (Chemban Vinod Jose), two business tycoons who spot a charismatic leader in him. An offer that Viju simply cannot refuse is laid out on a platter before him, and before he knows it, he is rechristened as Pastor Joshua Carlton – a miracle worker who touches and transforms tormented lives from around the globe.

Vincent Vadakkan’s script has the daring bite that makes it obvious that it’s not the kind that is on the lookout for easy targets. Religion, and faith for that matter, have remained issues that have stayed almost taboo for film makers this side of the world, and Vadakkan goes at it with a gung-ho that at least initially astonishes you. The barbs are darted off dime a dozen, and the critique bracingly laid out, appearing audacious and at times, even a bit provocative by the contemporary movie standards.

malayalam movie review 2020

This is a film that invites you to make your own judgement, and it’s a whopper ride without doubt for almost an hour and a half, and it seems like Vadakkan and Rasheed have a cheeky winner in their hands.  Post the half way point though, ‘Trance’ starts losing itself in more ways than one, and the delirium that is purposefully induced in its protagonist spills over to the script as well.

Thereon, with the arrival of Esther Lopez (Nazriya Nazim), things turn topsy-turvy, and as the young girl sets herself to the task of uncovering the real man that Carlton is, ‘Trance’ starts showing signs of scampering off track. There is talk of depression, teen pregnancy and prostitution, and it gets hazier as Carlton starts struggling to grapple with multiple identities.

The film does offer plenty of food for thought, and is a stinging take-down on the nasty, booming business that religious faith has turned out to be. But eventually, its scattershot narrative in the latter half proves detrimental to its coherence, and a film that could have spurred a rational analysis and constructive inquiry runs out of steam as its running time of around three hours finally draws to a close.

There are the strange digressions that for instance rob the film of its gravity, and one such scene is the one that involves journalist Mathews (Soubin Shahir) and his friend (Dharmajan), who are out to disprove Carlton’s credibility. This is a scene that strikes you as an odd thumb jutting out from an otherwise sober narrative, and while its comic import cannot be denied, it strikes you as tonally awkward. There is also the final scene set in Amsterdam that moves much further beyond where they should have finally and ideally drawn the curtains, and it’s here that  you murmur to yourself, that at times, some things are best left unexpressed and some words best left unspoken.

malayalam movie review 2020

And yet, there is no turning away from the powerhouse actor that Fahadh Faasil is, and for the astounding performance that he comes up with, yet again, for ‘Trance’. As Carlton drives his engrossed spectators into a mass hysteria and ecstatic raptures, we are left no less awestruck by this astonishing performer that Fahadh is. Solomon, and the momentous menace that hangs about in the air when the man is around is etched to exactness by Gautham Menon.

‘Trance’ is brilliantly shot, and Amal Neerad ensures that the reverie that Viju Prasad indulges in turns into brightly hued reality, where the emerald lights mirror on the transformed man’s eyes. This is a swanky world that Carlton lives in – ritzy homes, plush cars and the overpowering smell of fresh currency –  and it’s far, far away from the filth and grime that his former self had trodden on, and Neerad’s exemplary cinematography brings it all into perspective, rendering ‘Trance’ into an absolute visual delight. The fabulous musical score by Sushin Shyam and Jackson Vijayan is absolutely befitting to the piece.

Verdict: Mixed Bag

Post the 2012 culinary drama Ustad Hotel, Anwar Rasheed returns to the director's chair with Trance. Starring Fahadh Faasil, Nazriya Nazim, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Chemban Vinod Jose, Soubin Shahir and Vinayakan in important roles, the drama is produced by Anwar Rasheed Entertainment.

Written by Vincent Vadakkan, Trance boasts of a stellar technical crew that comprises cinematographer Amal Neerad and sound design by Resul Pookutty while Jackson Vijayan makes his debut as composer.

Viju Prasad (Fahadh Faasil), a struggling motivational trainer, gets recruited by Solomon Davis (Gautham Vasudev Menon) and Issac (Chemban Vinod Jose) after watching his previous work.

Viju transforms under the tutelage of Avarachan (Dilesh Pothan) and rechristens himself as Pastor Joshua Carlton aka JC Trance, explores the possibilities of men turning into Gods through the desire for 'want', a word Solomon stresses on. The rise of Viju Prasad from a nobody to a swashbuckling showman.

The first half is packed with impactful emotional beats, that reveal Viju's fragile psyche. The storytelling feels like a fine blend of style and substance. Despite the apparent predictability of the interval scene involving a supposed exposé of Joshua's practices by Matthews (Soubin Shahir) on live television, the performances add to the intrigue of the scene's payoff.

After a focused first half, the film falters in the latter half, where Joshua witnesses his fall, on a personal front. The narrative introduces Esther Lopez (Nazriya Nazim), whose primary function is to monitor JC's medication. The character's unclear motives and sudden disappearance leads to a confusing turn in the narrative.

The screenplay also throws a predictable subplot involving a father who blindly relies on JC's miracles to cure his daughter. Despite the issues, the second half builds a convincing case that juxtaposes Viju’s 'delusions of grandeur', that is fed by Joshua Carlton's 'miracle worker' persona.

Fahadh Faasil transports us into the vulnerable mind Viju Prasad by delivering a thrilling, physical performance. The actor effortlessly sells the flawed godman with his energetic presence. Gautham Vasudev Menon conveys Solomon's shrewd personality with an understated performance. Amal Neerad's cinematography brilliantly complements the grandeur of Trance. One really wishes that Soubin's character of a journalist was written with some depth. With a few flaws aside, Trance is an engrossing character study.

'Vishesham' review | A feel-good family drama with a distinctive tone

Princy Alexander

After dabbling in a horror thriller in his third directorial, filmmaker Sooraj Tom is back this time with 'Vishesham', a feel-good family entertainer. Interestingly, the movie features Madhusoodanan Anand (as the lead), who made his debut as a scriptwriter with Sooraj's previous film 'Krishnankutty Panithudangi'. In 'Vishesham' too, both Sooraj and Anand join forces to take us through the lives of a couple who are navigating the ups and downs of their second marriage. As in other family dramas, 'Vishesham' too oscillate between love, marriages and children. Despite deploying the predictable cliches of storytelling, it stays distinct in tone, giving us a more sensitive portrayal of what relationships need to be in this time and age.

In treatment too, there is an attempt at good comedy, with Althaf Salim, taking some of the limelight. The actor's performance in 'Mandakini' was criticised, but as Shiju's (Madhusoodanan Anand) friend and marriage broker, he brings back his old charm. Some of the comedy scenes do fall flat and some even come across as sexist, but the dialogues feel largely relatable.

malayalam movie review 2020

This is Anand's first outing as an actor and he has nailed his role. The music, also composed by Anand, blends in well. But the highlight is Chinnu Chandni Nair's performance as Saju, a divorcee who dons the khaki to get back at her ex-husband, played by Dileesh Pothan. We have seen her impressive performance in supporting roles, in films like 'Kaathal-The Core'. As a leading lady, she holds a lot of promise.

Though the makers have been extremely cautious about the female body image in the film, they don't seem too bothered about being politically correct about the hero's semi-bald look. The movie also discusses infertility, choosing not to scratch on the surface, but giving us a broader understanding of the difficulties faced by childless couples. The supporting actors, including Baiju Johnson and PP Kunhikrihsnan, among others have also essayed their roles well.
