Resumes have changed a lot in recent years, so do your research to find out what the latest trends are. For instance, while an “objectives” section used to be a resume standard, people often drop this section today in favor of more space to highlight their accomplishments. Start with these general resume tips, then get more advice for completing our free teacher resume template, section by section.

General Tips

  • Keep it to one or two pages. Hiring managers don’t have time to read overly long resumes. Put the most important information up front, and remove anything that doesn’t truly strengthen your application.
  • Be honest. While you want to highlight your strengths and achievements, don’t go overboard. If you exaggerate your experience but are unable to perform certain tasks, you may put your future job at risk before you even get started.
  • Skip the gimmicks. Some people will tell you the way to make your resume stand out is to use fun fonts or a “creative” design. The fact is, people who are hiring want an easy-to-read, clear presentation that highlights your achievements and credentials. That’s what will land you an interview.
  • Tailor your resume. Keep a standard resume document that you can customize for the specific job you’re applying for. That might mean moving sections around, highlighting specific skills or experiences, or deciding which parts of your career deserve to be placed up front. Take a close look at the job description, and tailor your resume accordingly.
  • Don’t try to circumvent the system. Years ago, people would tell you to ignore requests to send your resume and instead show up in person. Our advice: Don’t do it! Application systems are nearly all online these days, and for good reason. This helps hiring committees by organizing information efficiently and ensuring they meet all anti-discrimination laws. So just send your resume and application using the method requested.
  • Don’t forget a cover letter. A great cover letter really can help your resume stand out. Learn how to make your teacher cover letter special here.

Contact Information

On today’s resumes, your mailing address is optional. In fact, if you’re looking for a job outside of your current geographical area, it can sometimes be helpful to leave it off. This way, employers won’t worry about whether you’re willing to relocate for the job.

Email addresses are not optional. This is the way most schools will contact you today, so be sure to provide yours. You might want to take a look at your address to make sure it sounds relatively professional too. Ideally, it simply contains a version of your name (e.g., “[email protected]”); don’t forget you can grab a free email address from sites like Gmail if you need to. But other addresses are fine too, as long as there’s nothing questionable. “[email protected]” is fine. “[email protected]” is not.

Professional Objective/Summary

As mentioned earlier, resume objectives are used less and less today. Recent college grads or those transitioning to teaching careers might still decide to include a professional objective statement. Those with more experience have replaced objectives with a summary statement that provides an overview of their career. It’s also OK to delete this section altogether if you’d like more space in the Relevant Work Experience section.

Education and Certifications

Include your undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as any certifications or licensures you hold. Note: It’s up to you whether you include your graduation date. Some people worry it can open them up to age discrimination. You’ll likely be asked for this information if you continue in the hiring process, so they can verify your degrees.

Related Experience

This is the real meat of your teacher resume. You can list jobs chronologically starting with the most recent, or choose to place your most relevant experience first. Either way, include your employer’s name, dates of employment, and the position/s you held. Then, highlight your experience and achievements. Strive to make your statements measurable and quantifiable rather than just a listing of your job duties.

Weak statements:

  • Taught fifth grade science and math
  • Prepared students for standardized math tests
  • Oversaw annual school science fair

Strong statements:

  • Instructed 100+ students each year in fifth grade science fundamentals, including human anatomy, electricity and magnetism, and earth and space science
  • Improved standardized testing math scores by an average of 8% over a period of five years
  • Organized seven annual school science fairs by coordinating 200+ participants, finding qualified judges, and arranging for prizes donated by the community

New college grad? You should definitely include your student teaching or internship experience in this section!

Additional Experience

You can use this section to include jobs you’ve held that aren’t quite as relevant to the one you’re applying for. If you’re new to the working world, it’s OK to include non-teaching jobs here. For those with longer careers, it’s probably not necessary to list every job you’ve ever had. Just highlight any experience that helps support your application or fills any employment gaps.

Professional Honors and Leadership

If you’ve received awards or honors related to teaching, share them here. The same goes for any leadership roles you’ve held in educational professional orgs.

Professional Affiliations

If space allows, you might want to include a short list of respected professional organizations you belong to. You should definitely include them if you play a very active role, have been invited to speak as an education expert at a conference, etc. Otherwise, this section is optional.

Other Teacher Resume Sections

Here are some sections you might consider adding if you have space, and a few to skip altogether.

  • Professional skills: Don’t include this section if your skills are simply those expected of any teacher. But if you’ve built up any unusual and relevant teaching skills through experience or professional development, you could include them here. (Fluency in multiple languages, for example.)
  • Community involvement or volunteer work: If you’ve been heavily involved in community organizations that work with children or education, consider highlighting those achievements on your resume.
  • Publications: Have you published articles in an educational or professional journal, or had your work featured on a trusted, well-known website? Include any relevant articles and links.

Here’s what you don’t need on your resume:

  • Hobbies or “unique” unrelated skills (like “juggling” or “Cordon Bleu chef”).
  • Any information about religious or political affiliations, or your marital status, gender, race, or age. These could lead to potential bias or discrimination in the hiring process.
  • References: Most people leave this section off their resume these days, as job applications or hiring committees will ask you for them separately. Line up your references and gather their contact information, but hang onto them until you’re asked to provide the info. You don’t even need to put “References available upon request,” since hiring managers already assume that.

7 Rules for Writing an A+ Teaching Resume (Plus an Example!)

Many of us remember our favorite teacher. Mine was Mrs. Poole, who introduced me to poetry, encouraged me to keep writing short stories, and indulged my fascination with the Gold Rush. She even let me play Oregon Trail at lunchtime. (Yes, I was that kid.)

But students never give much thought to how teachers get a job. In fact, when I was in kindergarten, I thought Ms. Murphy lived in her classroom! Thankfully, I was wrong. Obviously, teachers don’t literally live in their classrooms, but when you’re knee-deep in lesson planning, parent conferences, and test grading, it’s hard to imagine having the time to look for a job, let alone write a competitive, compelling teaching resume that captures the full breadth of your abilities.

“Some teaching job openings will receive hundreds of applications depending on the school district. Your resume must wow the reader within five to eight seconds of them glancing over it,” says Daryn Edelman , a middle school teacher turned Certified Professional Resume Writer. That’s a lot of pressure for a busy teacher. How do you go about writing a resume that’ll capture a superintendent, principal, or HR specialist’s (depending on the district) attention in a matter of seconds? Luckily, it’s not quite as daunting as it sounds. You simply need to follow a few golden rules.

1. Highlight Your Relevant Education and Certifications

It won’t surprise you to hear that your degrees, credentials, and certifications will play an important role in landing your next teaching job. “The first thing I look for when I’m reviewing a teacher’s resume is their education and licensing,” says Dan Swartz, Managing Director of Resolve Talent Consulting , an agency that specializes in talent management for school districts and educational programs. “I’m of course very interested in teaching experience too, but if I can’t tell whether an applicant is properly licensed, determining whether they’re qualified will be a challenge.”

And these licensing requirements will vary from state to state. “A bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement in most districts and states for obtaining a teaching license,” Edelman says. “Depending upon the job, you may need to show specific credits in the subject matter you want to teach. Many states require completion of either additional certification credits for special education and/or a master's degree in either teaching or special education.”

So you’ll first want to confirm what the educational requirements for your district, city, and state are—you’ll likely find these listed in the job description, but if not, a quick Google search should do the trick. If you meet the minimum requirements, be sure to include all the relevant details on your resume. “If you’re new to teaching, include your licensing details at the top of your resume,” Swartz recommends. “Otherwise, it can go toward the bottom below your classroom experience.”

2. Write for the Job You Want

While it can be tempting to go into great detail about all of your experience and accomplishments, it’s important to remember that your resume is meant to convey the ways in which you’re qualified for the specific job you’ve applied to. As Edelman puts it, your resume should communicate “why you are the ideal candidate for this job.” That’s why tailoring the content to reflect each job description is so essential.

Hiring managers use your resume to determine whether your experience will be a match for their current needs. “You can generally tell the priorities of a superintendent by the order and emphasis of the posted job requirements,” Edelman says. “Is the first requirement three years teaching at the high school level or a STEM degree from an accredited university? This will be one of the first things they will look for on a resume.” So make sure these important qualifications are on your resume and easy to find.

Teachers are busy, so I know that tailoring your resume for every single job posting might seem overwhelming. But I promise it won’t be as hard as it sounds. The key is to use the job description as your guide.

“If the job requires knowledge of a certain method like ‘Montessori,’ the resume should clearly show experience with this method,” Edelman says. In other words, if a skill, methodology, or job duty is mentioned in the job description, it belongs on your resume (so long as you actually have experience with that particular skill, methodology, or job duty).

Remember that cutting unnecessary skills or experiences can be just as important as including relevant ones. Swartz notes that every principal has their own preferences when it comes to curriculum and teaching styles, so if your resume highlights your extensive experience in Singapore math but the school you’ve applied to uses Eureka math, “you may not look like a very strong match on paper.” Be sure to pay attention to what is and what isn’t listed in the job description as you draft your resume.

3. Remember the Applicant Tracking System

“You should assume your resume will go through an Applicant Tracking System [ATS] where certain keywords are identified,” warns Edelman. ATS programs scan your resume for specific job-related terms, like “lesson planning” or “learner-focused” to determine whether your work history is a match for the job you’ve applied to. If your resume doesn’t include enough relevant keywords, the ATS might automatically reject your application before a human ever sees it—even if you actually have the right experience.

So how do you beat the ATS? Edelman suggests using the job posting to identify the right keywords. Note the requirements and make sure the important words in each one appear on your resume.

4. Feature Your Gold Star–Worthy Achievements

In addition to showcasing your relevant responsibilities from past jobs, it’s also important to highlight your accomplishments . This can serve to paint a fuller picture of who you are as an educator while helping recruiters and hiring managers better understand what you’d bring to their classroom. “Your resume should show so much more than how many years you’ve been teaching or which methods you’re familiar with,” Swartz says. “It should also show what you’ve done in your years as an educator, who you are as a teacher, and what you’re capable of.”

Edelman recommends including things like the creation or publication of curricula, innovative use of multimedia in the classroom, a track record of improved standardized state or federal test scores (like the ARMT, STAR, NYSTP, STEP, CAASPP, or WKCE tests), experience with special needs students, or collaboration on the design, monitoring, and fulfillment of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Another great way to bring your resume to life? Data. “Data is an especially effective and underutilized way to demonstrate your abilities,” says Swartz.” For example, did 75% of your students pass an end-of-grade test? Or did you achieve high growth with 100% of your students?”

5. Call Out Technical Proficiencies

While relevant technical skills will vary from one school to the next, “generally, teachers should show knowledge and experience in the use of tablets and laptops, G-Suite [Gmail, Docs, Drive, Calendar, and Classroom], education-focused social media platforms, gamification software [3DGameLab, Classcraft, etc.], and programs or hardware for accessibility of students with disabilities,” Edelman says. So don’t forget to detail your tech skills as hiring managers will be scanning your resume to quickly determine whether you have the proficiencies they’re looking for.

“With technology being so prevalent in the classroom, appearing to be out of touch with tech can be a red flag for hiring managers,” Swartz says. “Things like writing your resume on an older word processing system (like Notepad) instead of Word or Pages or neglecting to mention your familiarity with basics like Microsoft Word or Google Drive can make you seem less tech savvy than you actually are.” In other words, don’t neglect this section of your resume.

6 Don’t Shy Away from the Things That Make You Unique

Whether you’re in the midst of career transition, volunteer at an interesting nonprofit organization, or have a less traditional educational background, there’s no need to shy away from shining a spotlight on the things that make you unique. “Say you used to be a chemist and now you want to teach chemistry. That means you have great content knowledge,” says Swartz.

So there’s no need to exclude potentially relevant or interesting past experiences from your resume—even if they aren’t directly related to teaching. The same goes for compelling teaching or licensing experiences, like completing an urban education program or landing a teaching fellowship. “These are fairly selective programs, so most principals will be excited about that type of experience,” Swartz adds.

And while it’s generally not advisable to include religious (or political) affiliations on a resume, there are certain exceptions. For example, “If you are applying for work at a Catholic school, your church membership, volunteer church activities, etc. would actually be important to showcase,” Edelman says.

7. Remember the Basic Rules of Resume Writing

As you’re crafting your resume, you’ll want to keep a few basics in mind.

Stick to a Single Page

Most recruiters prefer one-page resumes as they’re generally easier to scan and include only the most relevant information. Tailoring your resume for each job and limiting the content to include only your most recent work history should help you to keep the length down.

Edelman recommends featuring only your most recent experience and cutting older work history. “A resume should detail your most current 10-15 years. It’s understood that your resume is a brief overview of your current career; it is not a biography.” You don’t need to include a list of references or a line about them being available upon request, either. “We know we can ask for them later,” Swartz says.

Note that when you’re first starting out, student teaching should be listed as professional experience. But after a few years, you should consider condensing this experience or leaving it off altogether—especially if you’re worried about getting your resume down to a single page.

Consider a Summary

Summaries can be a great way to share additional details about your personality and teaching philosophy, lend context to a career shift (like moving from teaching first grade to high school English) or to tie together seemingly less related experiences (like training employees or writing textbooks) together. Take a look at the sample resume to see this in action!

Craft Compelling Bullet Points

Bullet points are the most effective way to clearly and concisely detail your work experience. But just because they’re brief doesn’t mean they need to be boring! Punch up simple bullet points by including compelling verbs and key details. So something simple like, “wrote lesson plans” becomes “designed comprehensive, student-driven American history lesson plans, spanning the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.”

Make Your Resume Easy to Scan With Clear Subject Headings

“The resume must make an impression within seven seconds,” explains Edelman. “Whether the [resume] reader is a superintendent, recruiter, or employer, they will first look at titles and previous employers, then move quickly down to qualifications including degree and licensing.” So you’ll want to make sure that these key pieces of information are easy to spot.

Organizing your resume into categories (e.g. education, work experience, technical skills) and creating easy-to-spot standout section headings will make your resume easy to scan while allowing your most relevant experience to shine.

Choose the Right Layout

Most hiring managers favor traditional chronological resumes for their straightforward layout, easy-to-follow work history (typically displayed in reverse chronological order, starting with your current or most recent job), and clearly defined sections.

If you’re returning to the workforce or making a career change, you might want to consider a combination or functional resume layout. While not as universally favored by hiring managers, these alternative formats give you more flexibility to organize seemingly disparate or choppy work experience into a more cohesive picture.

Smooth Out a Choppy Work History

“After verifying that a candidate has the required experience and certifications, the superintendent will generally move on to note any red flags such as large gaps in employment or multiple jobs within a short time (job-hopping),” Edelman says. And while you can’t change your career history, you may be able to add context using a summary or a cover letter .

“If you’re bouncing from one job to another, you need to give a reason,” says Swartz. “Getting promoted is a great reason for changing jobs, while taking a leave to care for a new child or a sick family member is a perfectly acceptable reason for having gaps in employment . If you took an extended maternity leave, there’s no need to hide it. Just mention it in your summary.”

Be sure to proofread every version of your resume before you apply for a new job. Want a little extra credit? Ask a friend or trusted colleague to give your resume a read, too.

8. Learn by Example

Now that you’re well versed in the elements of an exceptional teacher resume, it’s time to look at an example! As you read, remember that your resume will probably look a little different, depending on your areas of expertise, teaching experience, and future goals. But every resume should be easy to scan; include details about relevant education, work history, and technical proficiency; feature compelling bullet points; and paint a clear picture of the candidate’s overall qualifications. Some might also include a brief summary and key achievements subsections (as this example does) while others may not.

“Understand that your resume is a marketing document, with you being the product,” says Edelman. “Everything must be true, but strengths should be showcased and any weaknesses or red flags should be minimized. It is not your entire biography, just a bite-size overview of your career.”

To land more interviews an offers, you have to make each one of those seconds count. Start by putting the exact information the reader is looking for at the very top of your resume.

A quick Google search will tell you that a Summary or an Objective should hold this top spot but, unfortunately, that traditional advice simply won't capture your reader's attention. Winning in today's job market means using a more modern approach, what I like to call a “Highlight Reel.”

Here's how it works:

Highlight Reels: A Proven Way To Start Your Resume And Win More Jobs

The Highlight Reel is exactly what it sounds like.

It's a section at the top of your resume that allows you to pick and choose the best and most relevant experience to feature right at the top of your resume.

It's essentially a highlight reel of your career as it relates to this specific role! I like to think about it as the SportsCenter Top 10 of your resume.

The Highlight Reel resume summary consists of 4 parts:

  • A relevant section title that ties your experience to the role
  • An introductory bullet that summarizes your experience and high level value
  • A few supporting “Case Study” bullets that illustrate specific results, projects, and relevant experience
  • A closing “Extracurricular” bullet to round out your candidacy

For example, if we were writing a Highlight Reel for a Teacher role, it might look like this:

You can see how the first bullet includes the Teacher job title, the years of experience this candidate has, and it wraps up with a value-driven pitch for how they've helped students in the past.

The next two bullets are “Case Studies” of specific results they drove at their district. Finally, their last bullet focuses on their proficiency with classroom technology.

This candidate has provided all of the info any employer would want to see right at the very top of their resume! The best part is, they can customize this section for each and every role they apply for to maximize the relevance of their experience.

Bullets make up the majority of the content in your resume. If you want to win, you need to know how to write bullets that are compelling and value-driven.

Unfortunately, way too many job seekers aren't good at this. They use fluffy, buzzword-fill language and they only talk about the actions that they took rather than the results and outcomes those actions created.

The Anatomy Of A Highly Effective Resume Bullet

If you apply this framework to each of the bullets on your resume, you're going to make them more compelling and your value is going to be crystal clear to the reader. For example, take a look at these resume bullets:

❌ Responsible for creating a safe learning environment.  

✅ Fostered an encouraging learning environment through communication, collaboration, and compassion that increased student participation by 30% over one academic year.

The second bullet makes the candidate's value  so much more clear, and it's a lot more fun to read! That's what we're going for here.

This means your resume needs to really impress within this short timeframe. 

The nest question is, what can you do to make the most important easy to see and consume?

Simple: use a resume summary or objective .

These are punchy paragraphs that go on top of your resume, just under the contact section. 

The main difference between the two sections is that:

A resume summary is a short summary of your teaching experiences and achievements. It is the best option for teachers who have taught for multiple years.

  • Passionate English Teacher with a focus on American literature seeks a permanent position at XYZ School. Highlights from five years of teaching experience include improving college admission success rate by 40% at ABC High School. Excited about leveraging 5000 hours of teaching experience to give an inspiring classroom experience for your students.

On the other hand, the resume objective focuses on your professional goals and aspirations. It is ideal for entry-level teaching candidates or individuals who are seeking a change in their professional career. 

  • Motivated English Literature graduate seeking the role of English teacher at ABC High School. Experience includes supervising classes at XYZ Middle School for 60 days over a 3 month period. Skills include classroom management, grading to strict time restraints, and utilizing whiteboard technology. 

So, which one is best for you? 

Well, a summary is suited for teachers who have a lot of classroom experience, whereas an objective is suited for those who are new to the world of teaching (student, graduate, or switching careers).

How to Make Your Teaching Work Experience Stand Out

The best way to prove your worth as a teacher is with your previous work experience .

Sure, the recruiter will want to see that you have lots of subject knowledge, but nothing builds confidence more than your professional experience.

The second statement goes into specific details that show you’re a great teacher.

Use the job description to help you. Look to see if there is anything in the job description that matches your work history. If there is, include it in this section.

What if You Don’t Have Work Experience?

Maybe you’re a graduate who hasn’t worked before?

The main option is to use a portfolio.

Position Summary

Education for Change is looking for dynamic and visionary teachers who will engage students, families, and other members of our learning community to ensure high student achievement. The teacher provides instructional leadership to students and actively participates in and contributes to a collaborative, results-oriented professional learning community. They engage community partners and families in serving the whole child and ensuring ALL children achieve at high levels prepared to succeed in any setting. They know how to successfully work in an urban elementary school with a high English Learner and low-income population.

EFC believes that high-quality instruction, and its continuous refinement, will lead to success for our students. We are looking for teachers who are highly effective in each of the following areas:

Data Driven Planning & Assessment

  • Develop and implement effective daily and long-term instructional plans and classroom activities aligned with student needs, California Common Core standards, and EFC and school instructions, goals, and objectives
  • Assess students regularly and analyze student results, both individually and in a collaborative cycle of inquiry with colleagues and administrators.
  • Use assessment results and student needs to inform and differentiate instruction

Classroom Learning Environment

  • Establish a culture of high expectations that includes the shared belief that ALL children can achieve at high levels prepared to succeed in any setting

UW-Eau Claire's English and language arts bachelor's degree prepares you to become a certified English and language arts teacher in grades 4-12.

The majority of the major is made up of courses chosen by you. Explore the nature and structure of human language, different types of communication, writing styles, language myths and how literature has changed over time. This broad range — and incredible flexibility — allows you to personalize your studies and focus on the areas that most interest you.

Professional development is a key focus of the major. Through projects, labs and fieldwork, you'll gain the tools and skills needed to develop successful students. The opportunity to assist teachers in their classrooms throughout your four years — as well as student teach for a full semester — will help you to build your leadership skills, identify your preferred teaching style, and discover how to best meet the needs of your learners.

Upon completion of the teaching - English and language arts major, you'll have experience collaborating, exercising creativity and communicating effectively — as well as a strong understanding of the many facets of literacy and language. Our graduates go on to instill a love and appreciation for language, reading and writing in elementary, middle, and high school students, helping them to grow on both a personal and academic level.

Partaking in cultural and global experiences is highly encouraged at UWEC. English majors regularly choose to take their education a step further by studying abroad in places like Japan, France, Italy, South Korea, and Australia. Cultural immersion programs have allowed students to better understand the world around them, while directly immersing them in new and different cultures. Past programs have explored transnationalism in Jamaica; cultural practices of the Hmong in Fresno, California; and the Civil Rights Pilgrimage in Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

A variety of literature, culture, theory, and film courses — as well as English and communication and journalism electives — allow you to become an expert in multiple areas. Some people might stay away from English classes because they think they're bad writers. I would say no one is a bad writer. Writing, like art, is very subjective, and I promise you there is someone out there who will share your story and see the light in your writing. If you're interested in expressing yourself or just have feelings you need to work through, creative writing is something that you should try.

As an undergraduate, I took a seminar dedicated entirely to Ulysses by James Joyce. Joyce’s modernist novel is mystifying, so question marks hung on the ends of students’ contributions. As we delivered our tentative remarks, we looked to our professor at the head of the table. She was our life preserver in Joyce’s maelstrom. Directing our comments to her kept our anxieties at bay.

But she would have none of it. Without fail, she’d gently interrupt our halting interpretations and, with a wave of her hand, gesture toward our peers around the table. “ This is your audience,” she would remind us. And we’d entertain her request, imitating how seminar dialogues ought to unfold, our eyes darting from one stranger to the next, resisting the urge to lock eyes with the professor. Still, every comment seemed to end with its owner’s neck craned expectantly toward the head of the table.

I now know how that professor must have felt. The undergraduates I teach have wonderful ideas and contribute often during our whole class discussions. But without deliberate intervention on my part, they tend to direct those contributions to me—not each other.

This observation may seem nitpicky. I argue that it’s not. Rather, the student behavior I describe here reflects deeper, problematic norms of the college classroom: that an all-knowing professor occupies the nucleus of the learning environment; that this authority figure’s approval and affirmation is paramount; that one’s peers are not genuine partners in the learning process but virtual strangers riding on the same bus. Those norms complicate efforts to foster authentic, student-centered discussions and require our attention.

Classroom discussions are optimal for many reasons. They can improve students’ communication skills , which are crucial in many professions. They can build students’ capacity for critical thinking and analysis. More fundamentally though, discussions enable individuals to respectfully and authentically engage with others. Discussions teach students how to discuss.

As Walter Parker writes, “[T]he ability and disposition to discuss are themselves legitimate things to learn.” The “disposition to discuss” may well be what students hold onto long after the semester ended. Students may not remember the finer details of a particular text, but they will probably remember the experience of engaging closely with peers around an especially nagging question. At the very least, this demands that students look at and to one another.

How might we shift the focus from the instructor in whole class discussions? Sometimes a hand wave and a reminder about who’s the audience isn’t enough. In fact, interrupting a student who has gotten up the nerve to participate and telling them to stop looking at you may be downright counterproductive. We need more and different interventions. Here are five classroom considerations that can enable students to stop snubbing each other during whole class discussions and start snubbing you instead.

Keep quiet. Embedded for a year in an elementary school classroom in the 1970s, sociologist Hugh Mehan detected a clear pattern in class discussions. He termed this pattern IRE: the teacher initiated discussion with a question, a student responded with an answer, the teacher evaluated that answer. Rinse, repeat. This pattern proves durable and pervasive. Researchers since Mehan have detected it in classrooms at every educational level.

It may make intuitive sense for the person with the most formal training to evaluate each student’s comment after it is issued, but doing so can condition students not to listen to each other and to instead wait to tune in until comments have been filtered back through the “expert.” Weighing in so frequently signals to students that the less refined contribution is only worthy of attention after it has been sufficiently repackaged by the instructor.

If we want students to start looking at and to each other during discussions, we must start by closely scrutinizing such habits. Are we intervening too much? Are we leaving room for students to respond to each other? Sometimes the best response of all is to keep quiet—to restrain our kneejerk reactions, step back, and open the floor for students themselves to weigh in. So, as we set out to shift discussion dynamics, we must first consider whether we are part of the problem.

Add smaller group discussions to the mix. Another reason students may hesitate to direct comments to each other is because we simply haven’t given them enough opportunities to interact outside of the whole class setting. The more occasions we offer students to engage with each other around course material, the more we reduce our own footprint when the whole group reconvenes. Providing students with different dialogic arrangements, such as small group discussions, can build community in the classroom, help students get comfortable engaging with each other and improve the chances that these good habits transfer to the larger conversation.

But we also can’t assume that the behaviors and dispositions we expect in the whole class discussion will organically emerge in small groups. Small group dynamics, too, may require some strategic intervention, and such groups can be ideal for establishing and reinforcing discussion expectations.

Aaliyah El-Amin, a lecturer at Harvard Graduate School of Education whose practices Meira Levinson and I feature in our book Instructional Moves for Powerful Teaching in Higher Education , actually makes it a requirement that small groups check in with each other before commencing their conversations. Students must first engage with each other as people before tackling course material.

We may have to set even more fundamental expectations, as well. In my own teaching, I have often found that how small groups physically configure themselves plays some role in the overall quality of their discussions. The four students meeting with their desks in a line, as if seated at a bar, are bound to have less equitable and lively discussions than the four who have purposefully rotated their desks to face each other. Now as my students transition to small groups, I circulate to request that they circle up.

Some readers might argue that managing behaviors like those is the office of the elementary and secondary school teacher, not the college instructor. But given the fact that today’s undergraduates are coming to our classrooms having experienced unprecedented disruptions in their schooling, such details may need explicit attention, regardless of how “basic” we consider them.

Get “meta.” When we exercise transparency about why we do what we do in the classroom, students may feel a greater stake in the learning community and invest more of themselves in it. In some cases, actually facilitating a discussion about discussions may be in order. Doing so early on in a course can surface students’ feelings about discussions and their past experiences with them—all helpful information for discussion facilitators. Discussions about discussions also offer neutral spaces to further establish ground rules. Here, we can explicitly set the expectation that students respond to each other.

We can also strategically get “meta” as the everyday discussion unfolds. Pausing a student to remind them that “this is your audience” is one way to do so. A far better way is to wait until a student who is modeling effective discussion norms has finished their contribution and then to explicitly acknowledge what that student did successfully and why we want to see it from everyone.

“Publish” students’ contributions. Speaking of making things public, the more we spotlight students’ original thinking, the better we can dodge the spotlight ourselves. Every week in my courses, students complete a written response engaging with what they have read. It’s a Google doc that I comment on regularly. When I plan for class, I pore over students’ entries, mining them for insights and questions that I want the class to hear. Sometimes I’ll select a sentence or two from every student and compile them on a handout. Then, I’ll have students silently read each other’s writings, marking what resonates with them and what complicates their thinking. In the ensuing discussions, as students respond directly to their classmates’ contributions, it becomes awkward for them to look at me.

Other times, I will project a single student’s contribution for all to see. It may be a lingering question I want us to ponder together or a revelatory analysis that might transport us to new territory. I’ll even parenthetically cite the student’s contribution with a last name and date. Students always find this detail amusing. Though it may initially elicit some smirks, it ultimately sends the message to students that their ideas are worthy of serious scholarly consideration.

Brent Duckor and Carrie Holmberg term this practice “tagging.” They explain it as: “publicly representing variation in student thinking by creating a snapshot or running record of a class’s responses. Most often, tagging is scribing what students say—writing it down—in a place and via a method that allows all in the classroom learning space to see, process, and record it for themselves.” Frontloading tags in a semester can recalibrate default discussion norms in the classroom. Over time, students learn that their voices occupy the core of the learning environment, not the instructor’s—and that discussion behaviors ought to reflect that.

To be clear, I never “publish” personal reflections, which occasionally surface in students’ journals. I never publish misconceptions. I also fix grammatical errors before broadcasting students’ contributions.And when I’m highlighting an individual student’s thinking, I’ll often reach out to them beforehand to ask permission.

Bring a notebook. A final consideration is a simple one: have a notebook and pen handy to jot down students’ thoughts and insights. That helps us move to the periphery while demonstrating our careful attention to the evolving discussion. Although we should regularly look up from our notes to show solidarity with participating students, students are less apt to try locking eyes with us when we’re so focused on accurately representing their views on paper. In these cases, too, it becomes simply awkward to not turn to one’s peers.

And the notebook is not just a prop for deflecting attention. Having one allows us to track participation, chart a discussion’s trajectory and log key contributions we think the class should revisit. As the discussion progresses, being able to reference a student’s quote or phrasing we’ve jotted down is yet another way to publish students’ contributions and showcase our close attention to their sensemaking.

In conclusion, I may be students’ default life preserver during whole class discussions, but I don’t want the job. The discussions that flow from this dynamic are less discussions than they are a succession of teacher-student exchanges that just happen to occur in the presence of other students. What should be a single, focused discussion among 20 individuals becomes 20 separate conversations. It’s hard to even call a discussion like that a discussion.

Taking purposeful steps, we can rewire entrenched discussion norms in the classroom and encourage students to start looking to each other for answers and insights. The pull of the professor may always be a strong one, but I’ve found that deliberate pedagogical moves like those I’ve described here can minimize our presence, redirect engagement patterns and shift the focus back to students.

Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday.

The Minnesota governor was selected by Harris to join the ticket over a short list of other contenders, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro , Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly , Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg .

A former teacher, coach, veteran and member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Walz was elected as Minnesota's governor in 2018.

He is expected to be introduced as Harris' running mate at a campaign rally Tuesday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

April 1964: Tim Walz born in West Point, Nebraska

Walz was born April 6, 1964 in West Point, Nebraska. The 60-year-old Minnesota governor grew up in Nebraska, graduating from Butte High School in 1982.

After high school, Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard, according to his Minnesota Governor bio.

He graduated with a bachelor of science in social science education from Chadron State College in 1989. He spent a year teaching abroad before he returned to the U.S. to serve full time in the National Guard, and worked as a high school social studies teacher and football coach.

He graduated with a Master of Science in educational leadership from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2001.

1994: Tim and Gwen Walz marry

Walz married his wife, Gwen , in 1994. The couple has two children, Hope and Gus. The family lived in Mankato, Minnesota for nearly 20 years before moving to Saint Paul when he was elected governor.

Gwen Walz, whose maiden name is Whipple, was born in Glencoe, Minnesota and grew up in western Minnesota, according to her Minnesota First Lady website. She met Walz when she was an English teacher in Nebraska, and the couple moved to Mankato, Minnesota in 1996, where they both worked at Mankato West High School .

As teachers, the Walzs established a summer trip to China for their students, traveling there nearly every summer through 2003.

2004: Tim Walz gets involved in politics

Walz began his political career in by volunteering for John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat in 2007, beating the incumbent, Republican Gil Gutknecht.

He was reelected in 2008, again in 2010, and in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

2018: Tim Walz elected Minnesota Governor

Walz was elected as Minnesota's governor in 2018, running after former Gov. Mark Dayton announced he would not seek a third term. He won reelection in 2022.

  • Project 2025 is rife with bad ideas that, if enacted, would inflict harm on students and schools across the country.
  • Many proposals would require an unlikely degree of cooperation from Congress, though others could be enacted unilaterally by a second Trump administration.
  • Parts of Project 2025 are more closely aligned with a white Christian nationalist worldview than a traditional, conservative education policy agenda.

Project 2025 outlines a radical policy agenda that would dramatically reshape the federal government. The report was spearheaded by the right-wing Heritage Foundation and represents the policy aims of a large coalition of conservative activists. While former President Trump has attempted to distance himself from Project 2025, many of the report’s authors worked in the previous Trump administration and could return for a second round. Trump, himself, said in 2022 , “This is a great group, and they’re going to lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do.”

In other words, Project 2025 warrants a close look, even if the Trump campaign would like Americans to avert their gaze.

Project 2025’s education agenda proposes a drastic overhaul of federal education policy, from early childhood through higher education. Here’s just a sample of the Project 2025 education-related recommendations:

  • Dismantle the U.S. Department of Education (ED)
  • Eliminate the Head Start program for young children in poverty
  • Discontinue the Title I program that provides federal funding to schools serving low-income children
  • Rescind federal civil rights protections for LGBTQ+ students
  • Undercut federal capacity to enforce civil rights law
  • Reduce federal funding for students with disabilities and remove guardrails designed to ensure these children are adequately served by schools
  • Promote universal private school choice
  • Privatize the federal student loan portfolio

It’s an outrageous list, and that’s just the start of it.

We’ve reviewed the Project 2025 chapter on education (Chapter 11), along with other chapters with implications for students. We’ve come away with four main observations:

1. Most of the major policy proposals in Project 2025 would require an unlikely amount of congressional cooperation

Project 2025 is presented as a to-do list for an incoming Trump administration. However, most of its big-ticket education items would require a great deal of cooperation from Congress.

Proposals to create controversial, new laws or programs would require majority support in the House and, very likely, a filibuster-proof, 60-vote majority in the Senate. Ideas like a Parents’ Bill of Rights, the Department of Education Reorganization Act, and a federal tax-credit scholarship program fall into this category. Even if Republicans outperform expectations in this fall’s Senate races , they’d have to attract several Democratic votes to get to 60. That’s not happening for these types of proposals.  

The same goes for major changes to existing legislation. This includes, for example, a proposal to convert funding associated with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to no-strings-attached block grants and education savings accounts (with, presumably, much less accountability for spending those funds appropriately). It also includes a proposal to end the “ negotiated rulemaking ” (“neg-reg”) process that ED follows when developing regulations related to programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act (HEA). The neg-reg requirement is written into HEA itself, which means that unwinding neg-reg would require Congress to amend the HEA. That’s unlikely given that HEA reauthorization is already more than a decade overdue—and that’s without the political baggage of Project 2025 weighing down the process.

The prospect of changing funding levels for existing programs is a little more complicated. Programs like Title I are permanently authorized. Eliminating Title I or changing the formulas it uses to allocate funds to local educational agencies would require new and unlikely legislation. Year-to-year funding levels can and do change , but the vast majority of ED’s budget consists of discretionary funding that’s provided through the regular, annual appropriations process and subject to a filibuster. This limits the ability of one party to make major, unilateral changes. (ED’s mandatory funding is more vulnerable.)

In sum, one limiting factor on what an incoming Trump administration could realistically enact from Project 2025 is that many of these proposals are too unpopular with Democrats to overcome their legislative hurdles.

2. Some Project 2025 proposals would disproportionately harm conservative, rural areas and likely encounter Republican opposition

Another limiting factor is that some of Project 2025’s most substantive proposals probably wouldn’t be all that popular with Republicans either.

Let’s take, for example, the proposed sunsetting of the Title I program. Project 2025 proposes to phase out federal spending on Title I over a 10-year period, with states left to decide whether and how to continue that funding. It justifies this with misleading suggestions that persistent test score gaps between wealthy and poor students indicate that investments like Title I funding aren’t paying off. (In fact, evidence from school finance reforms suggests real benefits from education spending, especially for students from low-income families.)

The phrase “Title I schools” might conjure up images of under-resourced schools in urban areas that predominantly serve students of color, and it’s true that these schools are major beneficiaries of Title I. However, many types of schools, across many types of communities, receive critical support through Title I. In fact, schools in Republican-leaning areas could be hit the hardest by major cuts or changes to Title I. In the map below, we show the share of total per-pupil funding coming from Title I by state. Note that many of the states that rely the most on Title I funds (darkest blue) are politically conservative.

Of course, the impact of shifting from federal to state control of Title I would depend on how states choose to handle their newfound decision-making power. Given that several red states are among the lowest spenders on education —and have skimped on programs like Summer EBT and Medicaid expansion —it’s hard to believe that low-income students in red states would benefit from a shift to state control.

What does that mean for the type of support that Project 2025 proposals might get from red-state Republicans in Congress? It’s hard to know. It’s worth keeping in mind, though, that the GOP’s push for universal private school voucher programs has encountered some of its fiercest resistance from rural Republicans across several states .

3. Project 2025 also has significant proposals that a second Trump administration could enact unilaterally

While a second Trump administration couldn’t enact everything outlined in Project 2025 even if it wanted to, several consequential proposals wouldn’t require cooperation from Congress. This includes some actions that ED took during the first Trump administration and certainly could take again.

Here are a few of the Project 2025 proposals that the Trump administration could enact with the authority of the executive branch alone:

  • Roll back civil rights protections for LGBTQ+ students
  • Roll back Title IX protections against sex-based discrimination
  • Dismantle the federal civil rights enforcement apparatus
  • Eliminate current income-driven repayment plans and require higher monthly payments for low-income borrowers
  • Remove protections from predatory colleges that leave students with excessive debt

Federal education policy has suffered from regulatory whiplash over the last decade, with presidential administrations launching counter-regulations to undo the executive actions of the prior administration. Take, for example, “gainful employment” regulations that Democratic administrations have used to limit eligibility for federal financial aid for colleges that leave students with excessive loan debt. A second Trump administration would likely seek to reverse the Biden administration’s “gainful employment” regulations like the first Trump administration did to the Obama administration’s rules . (Then again, with the Supreme Court striking down Chevron , which provided deference to agency expertise in setting regulations, the Trump administration might not even need to formally undo regulations.)

Other Project 2025 proposals, not explicitly about education, also could wreak havoc. This includes a major overhaul of the federal civil service. Specifically, Project 2025 seeks to reinstate Schedule F, an executive order that Trump signed during his final weeks in office. Schedule F would reclassify thousands of civil service positions in the federal government to policy roles—a shift that would empower the president to fire civil servants and fill their positions with political appointees. Much has been written about the consequences of decimating the civil service, and the U.S. Department of Education, along with other federal agencies that serve students, would feel its effects.

4. Project 2025 reflects a white Christian nationalist agenda as much as it reflects a traditional conservative education policy agenda

If one were to read Project 2025’s appeals to principles such as local control and parental choice, they might think this is a standard conservative agenda for education policy. Republicans, after all, have been calling for the dismantling of ED since the Reagan administration, and every administration since has supported some types of school choice reforms.

But in many ways, Project 2025’s proposals really don’t look conservative at all. For example, a large-scale, tax-credit scholarship program would substantially increase the federal government’s role in K-12 education. A Parents’ Bill of Rights would require the construction of a massive federal oversight and enforcement function that does not currently exist. And a proposal that “states should require schools to post classroom materials online to provide maximum transparency to parents” would impose an enormous compliance burden on schools, districts, and teachers.

Much of Project 2025 is more easily interpretable through the lens of white Christian nationalism than traditional political conservatism. Scholars Philip Gorski and Samuel Perry describe white Christian nationalism as being “about ethno-traditionalism and protecting the freedoms of a very narrowly defined ‘us’.” The Project 2025 chapter on education is loaded with proposals fitting this description. That includes a stunning number of proposals focused on gender identity, with transgender students as a frequent target. Project 2025 seeks to secure rights for certain people (e.g., parents who support a particular vision of parental rights) while removing protections for many others (e.g., LGBTQ+ and racially minoritized children). Case in point, its proposal for “Safeguarding civil rights” says only, “Enforcement of civil rights should be based on a proper understanding of those laws, rejecting gender ideology and critical race theory.”

These types of proposals don’t come from the traditional conservative playbook for education policy reform. They come from a white Christian nationalist playbook that has gained prominence in far-right politics in recent years.

At this point, it’s clear that the Trump campaign sees Project 2025 as a political liability that requires distance through the election season. Let’s not confuse that with what might happen during a second Trump administration.
