The assignments in this course are openly licensed, and are available as-is, or can be modified to suit your students’ needs.

If you import this course into your learning management system (Blackboard, Canvas, etc.), the assignments will automatically be loaded into the assignment tool. The assignment pages within each module link to the live assignment page. You can view them below or throughout the course. There is at least one discussion and one assignment ready to be used in every module of the course. We do not recommend assigning them all, however, and recommend selecting those that work best for you . If you choose to assign the capstone project (explained below), we suggest excluding some of the other assignments so that students have sufficient time to prepare for their capstone work.

To make edits or customized versions of the assignments, we recommend copying and pasting the discussion or assignment text directly into your LMS discussion or assignment page in order to make changes.

Capstone Project

The capstone project is an optional comprehensive assignment that could be assigned to students to complete progressively through the course. The assignment is divided into 3 to 4 pieces and culminates in students creating a PechaKucha presentation.

For this capstone project, students will pick a reformer or activist involved with a progressive or social movement between 1877 and 2000. They will evaluate and analyze the ideas, agenda, strategies, and effectiveness of the work done by their chosen reformer or activist in order to make a claim and present on their findings in the form of a PechaKucha presentation (or another pre-approved format). PechaKucha presentations follow a 20×20 presentation format, meaning that a presenter chooses 20 images and speaks about each image for 20 seconds (totaling 6 minutes at 40 seconds).

The capstone project components are shared as assignments that link to Google Documents. You can make a copy of those documents to customize them. To do so, open the Google Doc and choose “File -> Make a copy” to create your own version.

What has Kamala Harris accomplished as vice president? Here's a quick look.

history assignment 2nd week

Vice President Kamala Harris and her meteoric rise as the successor to President Joe Biden, 81, as the Democratic presidential candidate in the Nov. 5 election is the most significant seismic shift in presidential politics in recent history.

As she gears up to secure the Democratic presidential nomination in Chicago this August, we examine some of Harris’ most significant accomplishments and policy initiatives.

More: Biden drops out of 2024 presidential race: What to know as America looks to election

Immigration

In response to immigration concerns, Harris’ call to action was the public-private partnership Central America Forward (CAF). The idea behind CAF is to support the creation of local jobs and other measures in order to slow the flow of mass migration.

CAF has generated more than $5.2 billion since its launch in 2021, and its partners include more than 50 companies and organizations that have committed to supporting economic growth in the Central America region. The entities represent the financial services, textiles, apparel, agriculture, technology, telecommunications, nonprofit sectors, and others, according to the White House.

Voting rights

Harris was at the forefront of the administration’s pursuit to enshrine voting rights protection throughout the U.S. according to White House transcripts . She pushed for Congress to pass the John R Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act , which would’ve extended the protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and required federal approval for some local election law changes.

In 2021, the bill did not receive the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster, preventing the start of debate on the Senate floor where Harris would have cast the deciding vote in the evenly split chamber.

Harris visited a Planned Parenthood clinic on March 14, a historic first for any president or vice president while in office, according to previous reporting by USA TODAY.

Walking through the clinic in Minnesota, the vice president spoke with staff members and health care providers as part of her nationwide “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour earlier this year.

Gun violence

In September 2023, Biden established the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention to reduce gun violence, overseen by Vice President Harris, as announced by the White House.

The Office of Gun Violence Prevention builds upon actions taken by the Biden-Harris administration to end gun violence, which include the signing of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

Heralded by the White House as the most impactful gun violence prevention measure in almost three decades, the now law bars individuals under the age of 21 from buying firearms, grants the Justice Department additional powers to prosecute gun traffickers, provides mental health services in schools to assist youth affected by gun violence trauma and grief and funds community-based violence intervention programs.

Maternal health

In her previous role as U.S. Senator for California, Harris introduced the Maternal CARE Act and the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act , which would direct multi-agency efforts to improve maternal health, particularly among racial and ethnic minority groups, veterans, and other vulnerable populations as well as maternal health issues related to COVID-19.

The vice president’s prior work on maternal and infant health care was a key component of the Build Back Better Act , passed in 2022. The legislation expands access to maternal care and makes new investments to drive down mortality and morbidity rates.

Broadband expansion

In 2023, Harris and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin to celebrate the announcement of new electronics equipment production made possible by the Biden-Harris Administration’s “ Investing in America ” agenda and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law requires the use of American-made materials and products for federally funded infrastructure projects, with the goal of bringing hundreds of new jobs to the U.S. The law also notably includes a historic $65 billion investment to expand affordable and reliable high-speed Internet access in communities across the U.S.

“Our investments in broadband infrastructure are creating jobs in Wisconsin and across the nation and increasing access to reliable, high-speed internet so everyone in America has the tools they need to thrive in the 21st century,” said Harris.

In 2021, President Biden declared Juneteenth a federal holiday. Often referred to as the “Second Independence Day,” it commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when 2,000 Union troops reached Galveston, Texas, to announce that enslaved African Americans were freed by executive order two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture .

“As a United States Senator, I was proud to co-sponsor a bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday,” said Harris during the Juneteenth concert at the White House. “This [day], we will hold a national day of action on voting.  And I call on all the leaders here to please join us in helping more Americans register to vote.”

Megan Faraimo

Recap: Team Wallace Prevents Team Lorenz from Week Two Sweep With 7-2 Result

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Pitcher Megan Faraimo scattered two hits over 4.1 innings of scoreless relief to lead Team Wallace to a 7-2 come-from-behind victory over Team Lorenz in the opening game of Sunday’s Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball Championship Season doubleheader at Parkway Bank Sports Complex.

The win elevated Team Wallace’s record to 2-1 while preventing Team Lorenz from securing a three-game sweep of its Week Two schedule.

Faraimo, who finished with 202 leaderboard points, received MVP 1 laurels after earning her first win in the circle this season. The former UCLA star registered four strikeouts and retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced.

Catcher Sashel Palacios , meanwhile, was the game’s MVP 2 honoree and collected 150 leaderboard points after going 2-for-4 with a run batted in for her second straight multi-hit contest.

Outfielder Morgan Zerkle finished the MVP sweep for the winning side, earning MVP 3 distinction and 150 leaderboard points after reaching base three times with a two-run single and a pair of walks.

Middle infielder Hannah Flippen paced Team Lorenz offensively in the loss with two hits, while three other players added a hit. Pitcher Aleshia Ocasio (2-1) suffered the loss in relief after giving up one run on one hit over 2.0 innings with a strikeout.

After falling behind by a 2-0 margin in the third inning, Team Wallace answered by plating seven unanswered runs over the next four innings for a 7-2 lead it did not relinquish. The squad scored three runs in the third inning before adding an insurance run in the fifth on Palacios’ single to left field. Team Wallace upped the margin with two runs in each of the final two frames.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Palacios continued her climb up the leaderboard, moving three spots into third place after her 150-point performance. Rookie Erin Coffel also climbed four places and ranks fourth with 712 leaderboard points.

Teams are now 1-for-11 in captain’s challenges through 11 games this season following three unsuccessful requests in Sunday’s opener.

Team Wallace initiated a captain’s challenge of a safe call on outfielder Amanda Lorenz ’s single with two outs in the bottom of the third inning … The challenge was unsuccessful after the call was upheld.

Team Lorenz also initiated a pair of captain’s challenges in the game … The first challenge was for a stolen base by middle infielder Skylar Wallace in the top of the sixth inning to determine if Wallace left early … The challenge was unsuccessful after the call was upheld.

In addition, Team Lorenz challenged a safe call on a single by outfielder Jadelyn Allchin in the top of the seventh inning, which was also unsuccessful.

Team Lorenz’s loss ended a five-game win streak for Lorenz, outfielder Megan Wiggins , catcher Jordan Roberts and corner infielder Tori Vidales … It also ended a nine-game win streak for Lorenz in addition to an eight-game run for Roberts dating back to last season.

Zerkle became the first player in Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball history to appear in 100 career games between AUX and Championship Season play with her first plate appearance on Sunday … The former Marshall standout has earned the starting assignment in an AU-record 98 of the 100 outings and stands as the all-time leader in hits and leaderboard points.

Outfielder Bubba Nickles slugged the 13th home run of her Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball career off the left field foul pole in the third inning to give Team Lorenz a 2-0 lead … Eight of Nickles’ 13 home runs have come in Championship Season play.

Lorenz upped her hitting streak to five consecutive games with a 1-for-3 effort in her Week Two finale … The former Florida product has eight hits and a .500 batting average during the streak.

Zerkle moved her hitting streak to five games in a row with a single in the sixth inning … She has fashioned five hits in the streak, including a pair of doubles.

  • #2 – Sashel Palacios (Team Wallace, +40)

Clark County citizens, with “the sole exception of Ridgefield,” were registering to vote in high numbers for the upcoming fall elections. Ridgefield’s J.W. Blackburn reported that city’s registration was considerably heavier than the previous year, “but he added there is room for many more names on the books.”

Sheriff Earl N. Anderson announced on Aug. 1, 1949, that he would request additional funds for a first aid car in his yearly budget. The car, to be operated by the sheriff’s office, would “be an insurance against the loss of life.” Sheriff Anderson’s declaration stemmed from the red tape he felt surrounded the use of Vancouver’s car, which was called the Francina Manary first aid car. The sheriff wanted to use the Francina Manary at Lewisville and Battle Ground parks but was “advised by the fire department that he would have to locate the mayor and obtain his signed approval.”

On July 27, 1974, the House Judiciary Committee voted 27-11 to recommend that President Richard M. Nixon “be impeached and removed from the presidency for obstruction of justice in the Watergate cover-up.” The case stemmed from a June 17, 1972, break-in at the Democratic National Headquarters by agents of the Committee for the Re-Election of the President (CREEP) to secure political intelligence. President Nixon used his position to “delay, impede and obstruct investigations of such unlaw entry.” Additional charges were released by the committee in the ensuing days.

On July 27, 1999, state officials declared the state was ready for Y2K. At a conference held in Vancouver, a panel released a three-volume state report on Year 2000 readiness. The report mainly focused on ensuring older computer systems could accurately read the new year. Officials recommended folks prepare for Y2K “as you would for any winter storm.”
