Shivaji was an Indian warrior-king. He is credited with founding the Maratha Empire , which became a force to reckon with during the 18th century. He is also credited with creating his own navy. Considered one of the most important Indian kings and a hero of the Hindus, Shivaji's life and work have inspired several works of art, including films.

Remembered for her heroics against the British, the Indian Joan of Arc Rani Lakshmibai remains an icon of the 1857 Indian Rebellion. The wife of Maharaja Gangadhar Rao, she is known for leading the fight against the British after her husband’s death. She also inspired the legendary lines Khoob Ladi Mardani .

Razia Sultana is known for being the only female Muslim ruler of Delhi. She ruled the Delhi Sultanate in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent from 1236 to 1240. She was the daughter of Mamluk Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish. Upon her ascend to the throne, she was challenged by rival nobles, many of whom she defeated.

Raja Raja Chola I was an emperor who reigned over south India from 985 to 1014. Also known as Rajaraja the Great, the emperor was deemed the most powerful southern king. He is remembered for resuscitating the Chola power and controlling south India and Indian Ocean. He is also credited with building the Brihadisvara Temple , a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The son of legendary Gupta emperor ruler Chandragupta I, Samudragupta ruled from 350 to 375 CE. He was part of the golden age of Hindu history and is known to have revived the horse sacrifice or Ashvamedha ritual. A devout follower of Vishnu, he had control over almost the entire Gangetic valley.

Akbar, the third Mughal emperor, played an important role in inculcating Persian culture into the Indian subcontinent. Akbar is considered one of the most important rulers of the Mughal Empire, an empire that seeped foreign ideas and culture into medieval India, the effects of which are still visible in modern-day India, especially in the northern parts of the country.

A king from the Chahamana dynasty, Prithviraj Chauhan ruled Sapadalaksha in present-day north-western India. Humayun was the second emperor of the Mughal Empire, which ruled over South Asia for nearly two centuries. At the time of his demise, the empire spanned nearly one million square kilometers. The expansion of the empire under Humayun’s reign helped his son Akbar establish a substantial legacy of his own.

Mariam-uz-Zamani, or Jodha Bai, was the wife of Mughal emperor Akbar. She was a Hindu Rajput princess and the daughter of Raja Bharmal of Amber. Mariam’s marriage to Akbar signified her father’s submission to the Mughal emperor. She was symbolic of the gradual rise of multiculturalism in the Mughal era.

Ahilyabai Holkar was the Queen of the Maratha Empire who reigned from 1767 to 1795. A great pioneer, Ahilyabai is credited with building hundreds of temples throughout India. She is best remembered for rebuilding the famous  Kashi Vishwanath Temple which had been plundered, desecrated, and converted into a mosque by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

Harshavardhana, the second son of king Prabhakaravardhana of Thanesar, became a king at 16. Also known as Harsha, he reigned over a vast region of North and Northwestern India from 606 to 647 CE. Hieun Tsang’s Harshacharita detailed how Harsha converted from Hinduism to Buddhism, banned animal slaughter, and built monasteries.

Maharana Sangram Singh I, better known as Rana Sanga, is remembered in history as a fierce Rajput king of the Sisodia dynasty. He controlled modern-day Rajasthan, Gujarat, and MP, with Chittor as his capital. In his struggle for power, he had lost one arm and one eye, and was crippled for life.

Nur Jahan was the chief consort of Mughal emperor Jahangir. She reigned as Badshah Begum of the empire from 1620 to 1627. Nur Jahan is often credited with influencing Jahangir's decisions for much of his reign. She is also remembered for her strength and courage and her skills in hunting ferocious tigers. Her life has inspired many books and movies.

Rajendra Chola I, or Rajendra the Great, was a Tamil ruler who reigned over the mighty Chola empire. He outdid his father Rajaraja I and expanded the kingdom to areas such as Sri Lanka and the Maldives. His conquests in the North covered the Gangetic plain.

Muhammad of Ghor of the Ghurid Empire went down in history as the man who established Muslim rule in the Indian subcontinent and set the tone for the upcoming Mughal dynasty. He ruled over a vast area, which included India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran, among others, along with his brother, Ghiyath ad-Din Muhammad.

Bharata finds mention in the Indian epic Mahābhārata , and was the son of Dushyanta and Shakuntala. He also appears in poet Kalidasa’s Abhijñānaśākuntalam . Though Bharata’s dynasty gave rise to the Pandavas, it is believed they were not his real descendants. Sources also mention him as an ancestor of Kurus.

Fifth-century BC empire of Magadha, what is now South Bihar, Ajatasatru was the son of King Bimbisara, and forcefully gained control of the kingdom by imprisoning his father. The Haryanka dynasty ruler formed the city of Pataliputra and also extended the kingdom to Kashi. He lived during the time of Buddha.

Tarabai reigned as the Queen Regent of the famous Maratha Empire from 1700 to 1708. The queen of Rajaram Bhosle I, Tarabai played an important role in fending off the Mughal forces from the Maratha territories after the demise of her husband. Tarabai's life and heroics have inspired films like  Shivrayachi Soon Tararani where she was portrayed by Nishigandha Wad.

Birbal was an advisor and chief commander of army in Mughal Emperor Akbar's court. He is best remembered for the folk tales that glorify his wit and intelligence. One of Akbar's most important courtiers, Birbal was part of The Navaratnas , a group of nine extraordinary people in the emperor's court. He has been portrayed in many folk tales and films. 

Rani Durgavati reigned as the Maharani of the Gond kingdom from 1550 to 1564. She is best remembered for defending her kingdom when it was attacked by Mughal General Asaf Khan. Although she knew that the Mughal army was superior to her army, Rani Durgavati refused to surrender and took her own life in the battlefield when defeat was imminent.

India is an extremely diverse country which houses different communities and a rich history, and we have had some incredible leaders who have inspired us through the decades. They all have contributed to the foundation of the nation through their different roles, and continue to be sources of inspiration for many. Here are 15 of the great leaders of India we think you should always remember.

1. Dr B.R. Ambedkar

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, economist, social reformer, and political figure who served as the chairman of the committee that drafted the Constitution of India from the discussions in the Constituent Assembly. He also held the position of Law and Justice Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s first cabinet and, after renunciating Hinduism, served as an inspiration for the Dalit Buddhist movement. Ambedkar received the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour in India, posthumously in 1990. Followers honour him with the salutation Jai Bhim. Additionally, he goes by the title Babasaheb. He is an unforgettable name when it comes to mentioning the great leaders of India.

2. APJ Abdul Kalam

Scientist in aerospace and statesman Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam led India as its 11th president from 2002 to 2007. He studied physics and aeronautical engineering and was nurtured in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He worked as a scientist and science administrator for the following four decades, primarily at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). He was heavily involved in both India’s efforts to develop military missiles and its civilian space programme. As a result of his contributions to the advancement of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology, he earned the moniker “Missile Man of India.” He also had a significant organisational, technical, and political involvement in India’s 1998 Pokhran-II nuclear tests, which were the country’s first since its initial test in 1974.

3. Mahatma Gandhi

The victorious struggle for India’s independence from British control was led by Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who later served as an inspiration for movements for civil rights and freedom around the globe. In 1914, in South Africa, the title Mahtm (Sanskrit: “great-souled,” “venerable”) was first used to refer to him. Gandhi’s birthday, 2 October, is observed as an international day of nonviolence and as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday in India. Gandhi was known as Bapu and is regarded as the Father of the Nation in India, though not formally. It would be remiss to not mention Gandhi when compiling a list of the great leaders of India.

4. C. Rajagopalachari

Chakravarti Rajagopalachari was a statesman, author, lawyer, and champion for Indian independence. Rajagopalachari served as India’s final governor general before it became a republic in 1950. Additionally, he was the first governor-general who was born in India; all previous occupants of the position were British nationals. Aside from leading the Indian National Congress, he also held the positions of premier of the Madras Presidency, governor of West Bengal, minister of home affairs for the Indian Union, and chief minister of the state of Madras. Rajagopalachari was one of the first individuals to receive the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. He also created the Swatantra Party. He was a strong supporter of world peace and disarmament and fiercely opposed the use of nuclear weapons. Throughout his life, he also picked up the moniker “Mango of Salem.”

5. Sardar Vallabhai Patel

The first Deputy Prime Minister of India and the country’s first Home Minister, Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, also known as Sardar, was an Indian lawyer, prominent political figure, lawyer, and statesman who served from 1947 to 1950. He is sometimes referred to as “Unifying India.” At a cost of USD 420 million, the Indian government built the Statue of Unity, the tallest statue in the world, which was dedicated to him on October 31, 2018. Its height is roughly 182 metres (597 feet). He was a lawyer and a prominent member of the Indian National Congress who led the country’s independence movement and oversaw its fusion into a single, sovereign state.

6. Jawaharlal Nehru

A major personality in India throughout the middle of the 20th century, Jawaharlal Nehru was an anti-colonial patriot, secular humanist, social democrat, and author. In the 1930s and 1940s, Nehru was a key figure in the Indian nationalist movement. He presided over India for 16 years after the country gained its independence in 1947. Nehru greatly influenced India’s development into a modern nation in the 1950s by promoting parliamentary democracy, secularism, science, and technology. He kept India out of the Cold War’s two blocs in foreign affairs. He was a respected novelist who wrote several works while incarcerated, including The Discovery of India (1946), An Autobiography, and Letters from a Father to His Daughter (1929).

7. Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, commonly referred to as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, and a foremost name among the great leaders of India, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 and was a prominent member of the order. Despite having the name Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu on her passport, she was actually born Anjez Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in the North Macedonian city of Üsküb (now Skopje). She migrated to Ireland and subsequently India after spending eighteen years there in Skopje, where she spent the majority of her life.

8. Atal Bihari Vajpayee

As India’s 10th prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was an Indian politician and diplomat who held office for three terms: for 13 days in 1996, for 13 months from 1998 to 1999, and then for a full term from 1999 to 2004. One of the Bharat Janata Party’s co-founders and a prominent figure, Vajpayee (BJP). He belonged to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a group of volunteers with Hindu nationalist views. He was the first Indian prime minister to hold office for the whole duration who was not a member of the Indian National Congress. He was also a well-known writer and poet.

9. R.K. Laxman

Indian cartoonist, artist, and humorist Rasipuram Krishnaswami Laxman created these works. His best-known works are The Common Man, which he created, and You Said It, a daily cartoon that he began publishing in The Times of India in 1951. R. K. Laxman began his career as a part-time cartoonist, primarily for regional publications and newspapers. He drew his older brother R. K. Narayan’s stories for The Hindu while still a college student. Political cartoonist for The Free Press Journal in Mumbai, that was his first full-time position. Later, he joined The Times of India, where he rose to fame as the fictional character known as The Common Man. This proved to be the turning point in Laxman’s life.

10. Baba Amte

Indian social worker and activist Murlidhar Devidas Amte, better known by his stage name Baba Amte, is well renowned for his work in the rehabilitation and empowerment of leprosy patients. He has won various honours and accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan, the Templeton Prize, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Gandhi Peace Prize, the Dr. Ambedkar International Award, and the Jamnalal Bajaj Award. He is frequently referred to be India’s contemporary Gandhi, and an unforgettable mention among the great leaders of India.

11. Homi J Bhabha

Homi Jehangir Bhabha, FRS, was an Indian nuclear physicist who founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and served as its founding director and professor of physics (TIFR). Bhabha was the founding director of the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET), which is now known as the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in his honour. He is also known colloquially as the “Father of the Indian Nuclear Program.” The cornerstones of Indian nuclear weapon development, which Bhabha also oversaw as director, were TIFR and AEET. The Adams Prize (1942) and the Padma Bhushan were given to Homi Bhabha (1954). In 1951 and 1953–1956, he was again a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Physics.

12. Aruna Asaf Ali

Aruna Asaf Ali was a publisher, political activist, and educator from India. She was an ardent member of the fight for Indian independence, and she is well known for raising the Indian National flag at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay in 1942, during the Quit India Movement. She continued involved in politics after independence and was elected as Delhi’s first Mayor.

13. Asima Chatterjee

Asima Chatterjee was an Indian organic chemist known for her contributions to phytomedicine and organic chemistry. Her study on vinca alkaloids, invention of anti-epileptic medications, and creation of anti-malarial medications are some of her most well-known accomplishments. She also wrote a sizable amount of material about Indian subcontinental medicinal plants. She was the first female to be awarded a doctorate in science by a university in India.

14. Mahashweta Devi

An activist and Bengali writer from India, Mahasweta Devi. Rudali, Aranyer Adhikar, and Hajar Churashir Maa are some of her best-known literary works. She was a socialist who fought for the liberation and empowerment of the Lodha and Shabar tribespeople in the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. She received numerous literary honours, including the Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan, India’s civilian honours, the Jnanpith Award, and the Sahitya Akademi Award (in Bengali). She has been hailed among the great leaders of India for decades.

15. Ela Bhatt

Ela Ramesh Bhatt founded the Self-Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA) in 1972 and held the position of general secretary for the organisation from 1972 until 1996. She is an Indian cooperative organiser, activist, and supporter of Gandhi. She is the Gujarat Vidyapith’s current chancellor. Bhatt, a lawyer by profession, has received numerous national and international honours, including the Padma Bhushan, the Right Livelihood Award, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, and the Right Livelihood Award for “assisting home-based producers to organise for their welfare and self-respect” (1986).

History of India

India is a land of ancient civilization. India's social, economic, and cultural configurations are the products of a long process of regional expansion. Indian history begins with the birth of the Indus Valley Civilization and the coming of the Aryans. These two phases are usually described as the pre-Vedic and Vedic age. Hinduism arose in the Vedic period. 

The fifth century saw the unification of India under Ashoka, who had converted to Buddhism, and it is in his reign that Buddhism spread in many parts of Asia. In the eighth century Islam came to India for the first time and by the eleventh century had firmly established itself in India as a political force. It resulted into the formation of the Delhi Sultanate, which was finally succeeded by the Mughal Empire, under which India once again achieved a large measure of political unity. 

It was in the 17th century that the Europeans came to India. This coincided with the disintegration of the Mughal Empire, paving the way for regional states. In the contest for supremacy, the English emerged 'victors'. The Rebellion of 1857-58, which sought to restore Indian supremacy, was crushed; and with the subsequent crowning of Victoria as Empress of India, the incorporation of India into the empire was complete. It was followed by India's struggle for independence, which we got in the year 1947.

Economic History of India

Indus valley civilization, which flourished between 2800 BC and 1800 BC, had an advanced and flourishing economic system. The Indus valley people practiced agriculture, domesticated animals, made tools and weapons from copper, bronze and tin and even traded with some Middle East countries.

Emperor Akbar, also known as Akbar the Great or Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, was the third emperor of the Mughal Empire, after Babur and Humayun. He was the son of Nasiruddin Humayun and succeeded him as the emperor in the year 1556, when he was only 13 years old.

Shah Jahan, also known as Shahbuddin Mohammed Shah Jahan, was a Mughal Emperor who ruled in the Indian Subcontinent from 1628 to 1658. He was the fifth Mughal ruler, after Babur, Humayun, Akbar and Jahangir. Shah Jahan succeeded the throne after revolting against his father, Jahangir. 

Chhatrapati Shivaji

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was the founder of the Maratha Empire in western India. He is considered to be one of the greatest warriors of his time and even today, stories of his exploits are narrated as a part of the folklore. King Shivaji used the guerrilla tactics to capture a part of, the then, dominant Mughal empire.

Ancient India

Annie Besant 1847-1933

• Founded the Theosophical Society in India and started the Home Rule League. • Established Central Hindu School and College at Banaras (later Bill]). • President of the Calcutta Session of INC, AD 1917. • She did not attend the AD 1920 Session at Nagpur due to growing difference with Gandhiji as she felt that Government of India Act, 1919 were a means to free India. • Newspapers — New India and Commonweal. • She prepared the Lotus Song, a translation of 'Gita' into English.

Acharya Narendra Dev 1889-1956

• He was a scholar, socialist, nationalist and a lawyer by profession. He gave up his practice and joined Non Co-operation Movement. • He became the President of Patna's Socialist Conference in 1934 and a member of UP Legislation Assembly in 1937. • He was appointed as the Principal of Kashi Vidyapeeth in 1925 and also became the Vice-Chancellor of Lucknow and Banaras Universities. • He founded the Socialist Party in 1948.

Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray 1861-1944

• He was a pioneer of chemical research in India. His book ‘History of Hindu Chemistry’ was published in 1902. • Research work in Ayurveda with French Chemist Berthelot. • President of Indian Science Congress in 1920.

Achyut S Patwardhan 1905-1971

• Founder member of Congress Socialist Party and an active participant in Quit India Movement. • He left politics after independence.

• He was a revolutionary nationalist arrested in 1907 and deported to Mandalay. • He founded the Bharat Mata Society and launched a journal, Peshwa. • An active member of Ghadar Party.

AK Fazlul Haq

• Founder member of All India Muslim League and its member from 1916 to 1921. • Represented the league in the three Round Table Conferences. • Founded the Krishak Praja Party in 1937 and worked as Chief Minister of Bengal from 1938-43.

Amir Chand 1869-1915

• He was a revolutionary activist and associate of Lala Hardayal and Ras Behari Bose. • He was arrested in connection with Lahore Bomb and Delhi Conspiracy cases. • He was accused of throwing a bomb on Lord Hardinge and was sentenced to death.

Amritlal Vithalal Thakkar 1869-1951

• A social activist, founder of Bhil Seva Mandal and member of Bharatiya Adamjati Sangh (tribal welfare association). • He also served as the Secretary of the Harijan Sevak Sangh.

Anand Mohan Bose 1847-1906

• Founder member of the Indian Association of Calcutta (1876), Indian National Conference (1883) and Indian National Congress (1885). • Presided over the Madras Session of INC (1898).

Aruna Asaf Ali 1909-1996

• Nicknamed as Aruna Ganguli, she married to Asaf Ali, Indian’s first Ambassador of the USA. • She was imprisoned during the Civil Disobedience Movement (1930, 1932) and for participating in Individual Satyagrah (1940). • In 1942, she hoisted the Indian National Congress Flag tricolour at Mumbai’s Gowalia Tank Grounds. • Elected as first Mayor of Delhi, 1958. • She was awarded the International Lenin Prize in 1964. • Newspapers (alongwith Edanta Narayana and AV Baliga) — Link and Patriot.

Bhagat Singh 1907-1931

• Member of Hindustan Socialist Republican Army. • He started the Militant Naujawan Bharat Sabha in Punjab. • He killed British Official Saunders in 1928 and was involved in Lahore Conspiracy and bombed the Central Legislative Assembly. • He was executed on March 23, 1931.

Badruddin Tyabji 1844-1906

• He was the first Barrister in Bombay. • Appointed to the Bombay Bench in 1895 and in 1902 and also became the second Indian Chief Justice. • He advocated Tilak’s case on seditious writings in new laters journal, Kesari. • Founder member of Bombay Legislative Council (1882) and INC (1885). • Presided over the third INC Session in Madras. • He stressed upon modernization of Muslims and also served as President of the Bombay based Anjuman-i-Islam.

Baliram Keshav Rao Hedgewar 1899-1940

• He was a medical graduate and an active member of the Congress. He also participated in Tilak’s Home Rule Movement. • He established the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on September 27, 1925.

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay 1833- 1894

• He was a great scholar best known for the composition or the hymn Bande Mataram . • His first novel was Durgesnandini , published in 1864. and he started the journal Bangadarsan.

Barindra Kumar Ghosh 1880-1959

• He was a revolutionary activist and founder member of the secret organization. Anushilan Samiti, started in Calcutta in 1902. • He also helped in launching the weekly, Yugantar. • He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 190b but w released in 1919, and then he associated himself with The Statesman and Basumati.

Behramji M Malabari 1853-1912

• He was an eminent scholar and social reformer. • He worked for the cause or women and by his efforts the Age of Consent Act (1891) was passed. • He condemned child marriage and forced widowhood in his Notes on Infant Marnage and Enforced Widowhood (1884). • He founded a social service organization known as Seva Sadan. • His works include Nitivinod (1875), the Indian Muse in English Garb (1876), and Gujarat and Gujarati’s.

Bhulabhai Desai 1877-1946

• He participated in the Home Rule Movement (1916) and was imprisoned during Civil Disobedience Movement. • He represented INC in the Central Legislative Assembly for nine years. • He formulated the Desai-Liaqat formula in 1944 for negotiations with the League. • He advocated from the prisoners sides during the INA trials

Chandra Shekhar Azad 1906-1931

• He was a famous revolutionary activist, member of the Hindustan Republican Association and leader of the Hindustan Social Republican Army. • He gained his title “Azad” during the Non Co-operation Movement when he was arrested and the court asked his name, he repeatedly answered “Azad”. • He was involved in Kakori Conspiracy of 1925, Second Lahore Conspiracy, the Delhi Conspiracy, the killing of Saunders in Lahore and Central Assembly bomb episode. • He shot himself while fighting with the police at Alfred Park in Allahabad.

Chhakravarti Rajagopalachari 1879-1972

• He was a politician and lawyer from Tamil Nadu. • He gave up his practice during NCM. • He held the post of the General-Secretary of the INC in 1921-1922 and was a member of Congress Working Committee from 1922 to 1924. • He hoisted the CDM in Tamil Nadu and was arrested for leading a Salt March from Trichinopoly to Vedaranniyam on the Tanjore coast. • He was elected as the Chief Minister of Madras in 1937 Elections. • He resigned from INC in 1942 for not accepting the Cripp’s Proposal. • He prepared the CR Formula for Congress-League Co-operation. • He served as the Governor of Bengal (August-November 1947) and was the first and last Indian Governor-General of India (1948-50). • He became the Minister of Home Affairs in the country’s first Cabinet. • He founded the Swatantra Party in 1959. • His rational ideas are reflected in the collection Satyameva Jayate . • He was awarded the ‘Bharat Ratna' in 1954.

CR Das 1870-1925

• A lawyer by profession, he defended Aurobindo in the Alipur Bomb Conspiracy case. • He was the member of the Congress Enquiry Committee set up to look into Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. • He founded the All India Swaraj Party in 1923. • He was elected as the first Mayor of the Calcutta Co-operation in 1924. • He prepared the Das Formula for Hindu-Muslim Co-operation. • He was nicknamed as Deshbandhu Chittaranjan. • His works include Malancha in 1895 (poems), Mala in 1904, Antaryami in 1915, Kishore-Kishoree and Sagar-Sangit in 1913. • Newspapers/Journal- Narayana (Bengali monthly) and Forward .

Dadabhai Naoroji 1825-1917

Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar 1891-1956

• Leader of the depressed class and an eminent jurist. • He founded the Depressed Classes Institute (1924) and Samaj Samata Sangh (1927). • He set up a network college in the name of Peoples Education Society. • Participated in all the Three Round Table Conferences and signed the Poona Pact with Gandhiji in 1932. • He was in the Governor General's Executive Council from 1942 to 1946 and organized the Indian Labour Party and Scheduled Caste Federation. • Chairman of the Drafting Committee of Indian Constitution. • As the first Law Minister of Independent India, he introduced the Hindu Code Bill. • He started ‘The Republican Party’ in 1956. • Towards the end of his life, he embraced Buddhism.

Dr Rajendra Prasad 1884-1963

• Participated in Swadeshi Movement (established Bihari Students, Conference), Champaran Satyagrah, NCM, CDM and Quit India Movement. • Founded the National College at Patna. • Minister in charge or Food and Agriculture in the Interim Government (1946). • President of the Constituent Assembly. • First President of the Indian Republic. • Honoured with ‘Bharat Ratna' in 1962. • Newspaper — Desh (Hindi weekly).

Dr Zakir Hussain 1897-1969

• An educationist and nationalist from Hyderabad, Hussain was the student of Mohammedan Anglo-Oriented College at Aligarh. • He was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia University at the age of 29 years. • In 1937, he participated in the National Conference on Education in Wardha. • He was elected to the post of vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University in 1948 and was selected to the executive board of the UNESCO. • He served as the 3rd President of Indian Union and was honoured with Bharat Ratna in 1963. • He translated Plato’s Republic and Edwin Cannan’s Elementary Political Economy  also wrote a book titled Die Botschaft des Mahatma Gandhi in German. The Dynamic University contains his addresses during the convocation ceremonies. He also wrote a book on short stories for children, named Ruqayya Rehana .

Dhondo Keshav Karve 1858-1962

• A social reformer and educationalist who worked for the upliftment of women. • He founded the Vidhva Vivahottejak Mandali (Society for the promotion of widow remarriage) in 1893 which was named as Vidhwa Vivaha Pratibandh Nivarak Mandali in 1895. • Other institutions include-Mahisasuramardini (home for widows) in 1898, Mahila Vidyalaya, Nishkam Karma Math Monastery of Disinterested Work in 1908, Indian Women’s University in 1916 and Samata Sangh in 1944. • He was awarded Padma Vibhushan' in 1955 and ‘Bharat Ratna in 1958.

Dinbandhu Mitra 1830-1873

• He was a Bengali writer who highlighted the cause of Indigo planters through his play ‘Neel Darpan Natakam’, published in 1860. • The play was translated in English by Madhu Sudan Dutt.

Durgabai Deshmukh 1909-1981

• She was popularly known as “Iron Lady.” • She organized Salt Satyagrah during CDM in Madras and was imprisoned. • She was a member of the Constituent Assembly. • She was awarded the Tamrapatra and Paul Hoffman Award after independence in recognition to her service to the society. • Her social works include the establishment of Andhra Mahila Sabha (1941), Andhra Education Society, Sri Venkateswar College in the Delhi University, Central Society welfare Board and she also edited the journal Andhra Mahila.

Gopal Krishna Gokhale 1886-1915

• Gandhiji regarded him as his political guru. • President or the Banaras Session of INC, 1905, supported the Swadeshi Movement. • Founded the Servants of Indian Society in 1905, to train people who would work as national missionaries.

Gopal Hari Deshmukh ‘Lokahitwadi’ 1823-1892

• He was a social reformer from Maharashtra. • He founded the Punar Vivah Mandal at Ahmedabad to encourage widow remarriage. • He wrote articles in the Maharashtra weekly, Prabhakar, under the pen name, Lokhitwadi. • He helped in the launch of periodicals like Jhan Prakash, Indu Prakash and Lokhitwadi and also started a weekly ‘Hitechchhu’ in both Gujarati and English.

Govind Ballabh Pant 1889-1961

• He participated in the agitation against the Simon Commission, CDM and Quit India Movement. • He was the first Chief Minister of UP and prepared the “Pant Report” on agrarian reforms in UP. • He abolished Zamindari System in UP. • He was elected as the Home Minister in 1955 and is a recipient of ’Bharat Ratna'.

Indulal Yagnik 1892-1972

• He was a social reformer freedom fighter and journalist from Gujarat. • He participated in Home Rule Movement and Kaira Satyagrah. • He was n member of Antyaj Seva Mandal and set up schools for tribal children. • He presided over the Akhil Hindu Kisan Sabha in 1942. • He founded the Gujarat Vidyapeeth and established Maha Gujarat Janta Parishad after independence. • Newspapers/Journals—Navjivan Ane Satya (monthly), Nutan Gujarat (daily)

Jawaharlal Nehru 1889-1964

• General Secretary of INC in 1928 and its President in 1929. • The Independence resolution was passed under his Presidentship at the Lahore Session. • First Prime Minister of Republic India (from 1947 to 1964), also known as the architect of Modern India. • He authored the Doctrine of Panchseel and believed in the policy of non-Alignment. • Books — ‘The Discovery of India', 'Glimpses of world, History’, 'A Bunch of Old Letters', ‘The Unity of India’, ‘Independence and After', ‘India and the world’ etc. • His autobiography was entitled as “Autobiography".

Jamnalal Bajaj 1889-1942

• An industrialist and freedom fighter from Rajasthan, he was given the title of Rai Bahadur in 1921. • He founded Gandhi Seva Sangha, Gau Seva Sangha, Sasta Sahitya Mandal and assisted in the establishment of Satyagrah Ashram at Wardha. • He gave Seagon village to Gandhiji who renamed it as Sevagram. • He remained as the treasures or INC throughout his life.

Jayaprakash Narayana 1902-1979

• A freedom fighter from Bihar, he is popularly known as Loknayak . • He was a follower of Marxist philosophy and advocated for the nationalization of heavy industries and abolition of Zamindari. • He joined INC on Nehru’s offer and was jailed during CDM. • He formed the All India Socialist Party in 1934. • He actively participated in Quit India Movement and was imprisoned. • He Joined the Bhoodan Movement of Vinoba Bhave. • In 1975, he protested against the National Emergency and founded the Janata Party.

Jatindra Nath Das 1904-1929

• A revolutionary activist and freedom fighter from Bengal, he was arrested for his involvement in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. • He died in imprisonment after observing 63 days fast, demanding better conditions of living for Indian prisoners.

Jyotiba Phule 1827-1890

• A social reformer from Maharashtra, he worked for the upliftment of the low castes. • He was against the Brahmins’ organization like Prathana Samaj and Sarvajanik Sabha as they were concerned about the upper Varna only Phule wanted to replace Hindu religion with the “Sarvajanik Ishwar Pranit Satya" . • He founded the Satyasadhak Samaj in 1873 for educating low caste people and authored the Sarvajanik Satyadharma Pustak.

Kalpana Dull 1913-1978

• A woman revolutionary from Bengal, she was influenced by Surya Sen, hence joined the Chittagong Republican Army. • She was sentenced to transportation for life for participating in Chittagong Armoury Raids. • After her release in 1936, she joined the Communist Party of India.

Kanahiyalal Manaklal Munshi 1887-1971

• A freedom fighter and lawyer from Gujarat, he participated in the Salt Satyagrah and CDM as Congress member. • He was appointed as Home Minister Bombay in 1937 elections. • He was also arrested during individual Satyagrah (1940). • He was a member of Constituent Assembly. • He played a significant role in merging Hyderabad with the Indian Union. • He served as Union Food Minister in 1952 Cabinet, and Governor of UP (1953-58). • In 1960, he joined the Swatantra Party. • Magazines/journals- Bhargava, Gujarat, Social Welfare, Journal . • Books—’I Follow the Mahatma', ‘The Creative Art or Life', ‘Akhand Hindustan, and Pilgrimage to Freedom’.

Kasturba Gandhi 1869-1944

• A freedom fighter and wife of M K Gandhi, popularly known as “Ba”. • She supported Gandhi in all his political programmes and was the first woman to be imprisoned by the British in Transvaal. • She was arrested during Quit India Movement in 1942 and died in Poona jail two years later.

Khudiram Bose 1889-1908

• A revolutionary from Midnapore, he participated in the Swadeshi Movement and later joined the Revolutionary Party of Bengal. • He was arrested for organizing a bomb attack on the carriage of Kingsford, the Session Judge at Muzaffarpur (Bihar) and was sentenced to death.

Khan Ahdul Ghaffar Khan 1890-1988

• Title — Frontier Gandhi, Badshah Khan or Sarhadi Gandhi, Fakhar-e-Afghan. • Founded an organization of non-violent revolutionaries known as ‘Red Shirts” or “Khudai Khidmatgars”. He opposed partition. • Participated in NCM, CDM and Quit India. • Newspaper — Pakhtoon (In Pushto), later published as Das Roza. • Honoured with ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1987.

Lakshminath Bezbarua 1868-1938

• A writer from Assam, he started his journal Janaki in 1889 and also wrote the Assamese state anthem.

Lala Hardayal 1884-1939

• A revolutionary from Delhi, he took up the cause of India's freedom to a foreign land in order to win international support for the freedom movement • He was the first President of the Ghadar Party founded in San Francisco in 1913. • He founded the Indian Independence Committee in Germany and an Oriental Bureau to translate the writings in the local language. • Books – Wealth of Nations, and Hints for Self Culture .

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad 1890-1958

• Joined INC during Swadeshi Movement. • President of Khilafat Committee. Presided over the Congress Special Session at Delhi in 1923, to become the youngest President. Also the longest-serving President of INC. • He headed the Jamiat-ul-Ulema (1924), Nationalist Muslim Conference, Shimla Conference (1945) and negotiated with Cabinet Mission, 1946. • Elected as the member of Constituent Assembly in 1946 and became Minister of Education and Arts in the Interim Government. • First Education Minister of Independent India. Also given the portfolios of natural resources and scientific research. • Contributed in the foundation of UGC, AICTE and IIT Kharagpur. • Book – ‘India Wins Freedom’.

Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari 1880-1936

• A freedom fighter and surgeon from UP, he helped in organizing the All-India Medical Mission to Turkey in 1912-13. • He participated in Home Rule Movement, NCM and Khilafat Movement. • He was elected as the General Secretary of Congress in 1927 and President over the All Parties Conference and convention in 1928. • He also helped in the establishment of Jamia Millia Islamia in 1920.

Madam Bhikaji Cama 1861-1936

• She was a freedom fighter from Mumbai. • She participated in the Socialist Congress at Stuttgart in 1907. • She founded the Free India Society and the Bande Mataram.

Madan Lal Dhingra 1887-1909

• A revolutionary from Punjab, he was the member of Indian Home Rule Society, the Abhinav Bharata and the India Houses. • He was sentenced to death for assassinating Sir William Curzon Wyllie, an Advisor to the Secretary of State of India during a public function in the Imperial Institute, London.

Madan Mohan Malaviya 1861-1946

• A moderate leader and a lawyer by profession, he served the provincial and central legislature for many terms. • Through his efforts a memorial was built at the Jallianwala Bagh site. • He founded the Nationalist Party in 1926. • He was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. • He served as the editor of Hindustan, Abyudaya and the Indian Union.

Margaret Elizabeth Noble (Sister Nivedita 1867-1911)

• An Irish lady, Elizabeth met Vivekananda in 1890 and inspired by him, she joined the Ramakrishna Mission and became a nun. She worked as a social-it reformer for the upliftment of women. She organized relief works during the plague epidemic in 1899 and during the Bengal famine of 1905. She wrote the articles— The Master as I Saw Him and The Web of Indian Life.

Motilal Nehru 1861-1931

• A lawyer by profession, Motilal became an active supporter of the Home Rule Movement in 1916 and started the journal ‘The Independent'. • He headed the Congress Commission looking into the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. • He gave up his practice during NCM and was arrested while following the visit of Prince Wales. • He founded the Swarajya Party along with CR Das. • He had renamed Anand Bhawan as the Swaraj Bhawan and gifted it to the Congress.

Muhammad Iqbal 1873-1938

• He was a renowned poet and a lawyer by profession. • He joined Muslim League and presided over its Allahabad Session in 1930. • He was the first person to give the idea of a separate Muslim State. • He composed the song, “Share Jahan Se Achha.”

Mohammad All Jinnah 1876-1948

• He was inspired by the ideas or Gopal Krishna Gokhale. • In 1906, he signed a memorandum against separate electorates for Muslims. • Joined the All-India Muslim League in 1913 and played a major role in signing or Lucknow Pact. • In 1917, joined the Home Rule Movement of Annie Besant. • His differences with Congress began after the entry of Gandhiji in Congress. He opposed the NCM of Gandhiji. • In 1929, he proposed his Fourteen Point Demands. • Lahore Session of Muslim League (194o) passed the “Pakistan Resolution” demanding for a separate state for Muslims. Jinnah stuck to League's demand in all the negotiations with Britain, and finally, Pakistan was formed. • He became the first Governor-General of Pakistan.

Pherozeshah Mehta 1845-1915

• He was a moderate leader from Bombay. • He had denounced the Ilbert Bill in 1883. • He was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Bombay University in 1915. • He presided over the Lahore Session of Congress (1907) after the Surat Split. • He was given the title of “The uncrowned king of Bombay”. • He started a newspaper, ‘The Bombay Chronicle’ and founded the Central Bank of India.

Rabindranath Tagore 1861-1941

• He was a poet, philosopher, educationist, internationalist and a patriot. • He has his elder brother, Satyendranath Tagore, the first Indian to become an ICS. • His first poem was published in the 'Amrit Bazar Patrika' and then he wrote 'Banaphul' (story and ‘Bhanusinher Padavali’ (series of lyrics). • He founded Shantiniketan near Bolpore on December 22, 1901. • He wrote 'Gitanjali', which fetched him the Nobel Prize in 1913. • He inaugurated Raksha Bandhan festival to oppose the Partition of Bengal (1905). • He founded the Vishva Bharati University. • In 1915, British Crown granted him a ‘knighthood’ which he renounced after the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. • His compositions were chosen as National Anthem by two nations (i) India — Jana Gana Mana (ii) Bangladesh — Amar Shonar Bangla

Raikumari Amrit Kaur 1889-1964

• A freedom fighter from Punjab, she participated as a Congress activist in the Satyagrah of 1930. She was arrested during the Quit India Movement. • She was appointed as the first Health Minister of India, after independence. • She founded the Indian Council of Child Welfare and was the founder member of the All India women's Conference.

Ram Manohar Lohia 1910-1968

• He was the founder member of the Congress Socialist Party (1934) and edited the journal, The Congress Socialist’. • He played a major role in building the foreign relations of the Congress Party. • He founded the Socialist Party of India after Independence and worked for the development of Hindi as the National Language.

Ram Prasad Bismil 1897-1927

• A revolutionary from Uttar Pradesh, he was a member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association • He was sentenced to death in the Kakori Mail Dacoity Case (August 9, 1925). • His most famous composition is “Sarforoshi ki Tamanna ab hamare dil mein hai”.

Rani Gaidinliu 1915-1981

• She was a nationalist leader from Nagaland. • She organised tribal revolts against the Britishers in Manipur. She was arrested in 1932 and was released only after independence. • JL Nehru gave her the title of “Rani of the Nagas”.

Ras Behari Bose 1886-1945

• A revolutionary from Bengal, Bose organized several clandestine activities in UP, Delhi and Punjab at an early age. • He was associated with Hardinge Bomb Case and Lahore Conspiracy Case after which he managed to escape to Japan. • He founded the Indian Muslim League and organized its first session at Bangkok in 1942. • He also served as the President of the Council of Action for the formation of INA, and later handed it over to Subash Chandra Bose. • Bose died in Tokyo on January 21, 1945.

Sachindra Nath Sanyal 1895-1945

• An associate of Ras Behari Bose, Sanyal organized a revolt by the soldiers of 7th Rajput Regiment in the United Provinces. • He was the founder member of Hindustan Republican Association and was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Kakori Conspiracy Case in 1925.

Sachidananda Sinha 1871-1950

• A lawyer and educationist from Bihar, Sinha joined Congress in 1899 as a moderate leader. • He participated in the Home Rule League Movement and served as a member of Executive Council of Government of Bihar and Orissa in 1921. • He held the post of Vice-Chancellor of Patna University from 1936 to 1944. • He was the Interim President of the Indian Constituent Assembly. • He published the journal, ‘Indian Nation’ and edited ‘Hindustan Review’.

Subhash Chandra Bose 1897-1945

• He passed the Indian Civil Services Examination in 1920 in England but left it on Gandhiji's call of NCM. • Founded the Independence for India League with JL Nehru. • Elected as the President of INC at its Haripura Session (1938) and Tripuri Session (1939) hut resigned from Tripuri due to differences with Gandhiji. • He founded the Forward Block (1939) and Kisan Sabha. • He escaped to Berlin in 1941 and met Hitler. He took the charge of Indian Army (Azad Hind Fauz) in 1943 in Singapore and set up Indian Provisional Government there. • He addressed Mahatma Gandhi as the “Father of the Nation.” • He supposedly died in a plane crash in 1945. • Slogans — “Dilli Chalo” and “Jai Hind”. • Autobiography — ‘The Indian Struggle’.

Sarojini Naidu 1879-1949

• Popularly known as the “Nightingale of India”, was a nationalist and poetess from Uttar Pradesh. • She was married to Dr Govindarajulu Naidu in 1893. • Under the guidance of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, she became the first woman to participate in India's struggle for independence. • She participated in the Dandi March with Gandhiji and presided over the Kanpur Session of Congress in 1925. • She was the first woman to become the Governor of Uttar Pradesh State. • Her famous poetries include - The Golden Threshold (1905), The Feather of the Dawn; The Bird of Time (1912) and The Broken Wing (1917).

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan 1888-1975

• An educationalist from Tamil Nadu. Radhakrishnan was associated with many educational institutions in India. • He served as the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University (1931) and Banaras Hindu University (1942). • He gave lectures on theology and philosophy in the universities of Chicago, Manchester, London and Oxford, among others. • He was the leader of the Indian delegation to UNESCO from 1946-50, its chairman in 1948 and President of UNESCOs University Education Commission in 1952. • He was also appointed as the Vice-President of International PEN. • In 1962, he represented the Calcutta University at the Congress of Philosophy at Harvard University. • He was twice elected as the Vice-President of India (1952-56 and 1957-62) and served as the President of the nation from 1962 to 1967. • His birthday (5th September), is celebrated as ‘Teacher’s Day'. • His works include — The Ethics of the Vedanta and its Material Presupposition (1908); The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore (1918): Idealistic view of Life (1932); Eastern Religion and Western Thought: Indian Philosophy and Kalki on the Future of Civilization.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar 1883-1966

• He was a poet, scholar, social worker, historian, and one of the earliest revolutionaries from Maharashtra. • He founded the Mitra Mela (Assembly of friends) in 1889 and renamed it as the Abhinav Bharat, Society (New India Society) in 1904. • He founded the Free India Society in London in 1906. • He described the Revolt of 1857 as the first war or independence in his book, ‘Indian war of Independence’. • He was arrested for his involvement in Nasik Conspiracy Case. • He was elected as the President of the Hindu Mahasabha in 1937.

Vallabhbhai Patel 1875-1950

• A freedom fighter and social reformer from Gujarat, he is popularly known as Sardar Pater and honoured with the title of “The Iron Man of India”. • His father, Jhaverbhai Pate), is supposed to have fought in the army of Rani of Jhansi in the Revolt of 1857. • He started the Kheda or Kaira Satyagrah in 1918 and fought for the rights of the peasants in Bardoli Satyagrah. Here, he was honoured with the title “Sardar”. • He was the first national leader to be arrested during the Civil Disobedience Movement. • He participated in Gandhi’s Individual Satyagrah and Quit India Movement. • In the post-independence period, he was appointed as the First Deputy Prime Minister of India along with the portfolios of the Information and Broadcasting and Home Ministry. • He played a major role in integrating the 562 states in the Indian Union.

Vithalbhai Patel 1871-1933

• A freedom fighter from Gujarat and elder brother of Vallabhbhai Patel, Vithalbhai rebelled against the leadership of Gandhiji over the abortion of the NCM and formed the Swarajya Party. • He was elected for the Central Legislative Assembly in 1923. • He rejoined Congress upon the declaration of Poorna Swaraj but after the end of Salt Satyagrah, he became a fierce critic of Gandhi and a strong ally of Subhas Chandra Bose.

For many among us, the term “Famous personalities of India” brings to mind renowned figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. While these two luminaries are monuments to the country’s independence struggle, there are a great many other Indians who have made tremendous contributions to the fields of politics, culture, entertainment, literature and much more.

The Indian independence movement was spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi. He is regarded by many as one of history’s greatest leaders and was instrumental in guiding India toward freedom from British domination.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India. A nearby princely state’s minister served as his father. He completed his legal studies at University College London when he was a young man, working as an advocate in Bombay with some measure of success before coming home to resume his legal career.

After becoming known as an authority on Hindu law, he went on a lecture tour across India, discussing politics and religion. He also wrote several books that were eventually published, such as Hind Swaraj (1909), The Story of My Experiments with Truth (1925), An Autobiography, or The Story of My Experiments With Truth (1929), etc.

The Dalit Buddhist Movement was inspired by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, an Indian jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer who fought against societal injustice against Untouchables (Dalits) in India. Additionally, people call him Babasaheb. Ambedkar was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and the country’s first minister of law after independence.

Ambedkar was raised by untouchable people (then known as Dalits). He was born into a group that had varying degrees of socioeconomic adversity as a result of their absence from Hinduism’s caste system, and as a result, he experienced prejudice from a young age.

The first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, was a remarkable leader who was instrumental in the Independence cause . He was also a superb writer and public speaker. Nehru was not only a leader; he also made contributions in the spheres of politics and education.

On November 14, 1889, in Allahabad, Jawaharlal Nehru was born (India). After completing his education at Cambridge University and Harrow School (London), he chose to study law despite his parents’ wishes for him to become an engineer (England). After arriving back in India from England, he enrolled at the Allahabad High Court and began practicing law there for 15 years before joining the fight to end British authority over India.

Indian industrialist J. R. D. Tata established the Tata Group of enterprises in 1868 and presided over it from 1932 to 1938, 1940 to 1953, and from 1957 to 1988. His father had traveled to Paris, France, where he was born on December 28, 1904. He passed away in Mumbai, India, on November 29, 1993, at the age of 88, following a chronic illness.

Tata is well-known for launching Tata Airlines (now Air India), the first commercial airline in India, and Air India International, the first steel mill in Asia (which became Vistara). In 1971, the Royal Aeronautical Society in the UK honored him for his groundbreaking contributions to the growth of civil aviation by making him the first Indian to be admitted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame.

Indira Gandhi, the first female prime minister of India, was a great leader. She served as prime minister from 1966 until her assassination in 1977 by her bodyguards. She was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru.

In many ways, she was an effective leader . She had a superb sense of direction, for instance, so that no one could ever get lost while following her (and this is why India is still on top of its game today). The crowds that gathered around Indira whenever she appeared in public were so sizable that it was impossible to manage them. She was also an exceptional speaker.

Satyajit Ray was an Indian film director , producer, screenwriter, lyricist, and composer. He was the son of Indiradevi and Ashoke Kumar Ray. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors ever.

The master storyteller Satyajit Ray has left behind a film legacy that is equally the responsibility of India and the rest of the world. His films show great humanity, in-depth observation, and deft handling of people and circumstances.

Satyajit Ray was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 1992. Other honors include the Indian ‘Bharat Ratna medal and the French ‘Lègion d’Honneur.’

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam , a scientist , and statesman served as India’s eleventh president from 2002 until 2007. In India, he is referred to as the ‘Missile Man’ for developing ballistic missiles and launchers.

He worked as an aeronautical engineer with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Defense Industries Department (DID), Liquid Propulsion System Centre (LPSC), and Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). He was instrumental in the development of the country’s nuclear, space, and missile programs (ISRO).

India’s most renowned playback singer is Lata Mangeshkar is one of the famous personalities of India. She began her career in 1942, and it has now lasted more than seven decades. Mangeshkar has sung songs in over 36 regional Indian languages and international languages, predominantly in Marathi and Hindi , for over a thousand Hindi film soundtracks.

The government of India presented her with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the country’s highest honor in the film industry, in 1989. The Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian accolade, was also given to her. According to the Guinness Book of Records in 1974, Lata Mangeshkar was the most-recorded musician in history.

The God of Cricket , Sachin Tendulkar, was a former captain and cricketer for India. He is recognized as one of history’s best batsmen. Before he ended his professional cricket career in 2013, Tendulkar played for the Mumbai squad from 1988 to 2013. He received the Bharat Ratna for his contributions to Indian cricket and athletics.

He is also the first male cricketer to score 200 runs in one-day internationals and has the most runs ever scored by an individual in test cricket (14927 runs) (ODIs).

AR Rahman is an Indian composer, singer, songwriter, music producer, musician, multi-instrumentalist, and philanthropist. He was born on January 6, 1967, in Madras, Tamil Nadu. When Rahman was four years old, he started piano lessons and helped his father at the studio.

The much-anticipated break came in 1992 when director Mani Ratnam asked AR Rahman to write the score and soundtrack for the Tamil film Roja, for which he received his first National Award for best music director. Initially, AR Rahman wrote soundtracks for documentaries and jingles for TV commercials. For Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, he received Grammy, Bafta, Golden Globe, and Academy Award nominations.

For us, these ordinary people are the real heroes, whose conviction and commitment to their chosen causes – despite facing the same daily hurdles and life crunches as the rest of us – make them an extraordinary breed of individuals.

As writers of these stories, it puts us in a tough spot to pick any personal favourite, for every single one of them has given us invaluable life lessons as well as goals to strive for.

However, there is a need to highlight some of them, even if they are first among equals.

With that in mind, and in no particular order, here are 10 outstanding everyday heroes, whose actions truly epitomise the values that drive The Better India:

Paulami patel.

12-year-old Paulami could have never foreseen that her family’s traditional summer vacation to Hyderabad in 2001 would change her life forever.

That year, a terrible accident left her with 75-80 per cent burns and an amputated arm. Paulami was shattered – but not so much that she could give up on life. With her parents as her ultimate pillars of support, this fighter took the reins of her life in her own hands, literally.

Sixteen years and 45 surgeries later, Paulami is perhaps one of the most resilient and strongest persons you will ever meet. She now runs her family business, which deals with heavy machinery, and is happily married to her childhood sweetheart.

“I never thought that I’d meet with an accident and little did I know that it was going to change my life forever. But it happened anyway, and there was nothing anyone could do to undo it. But what I could do was fight back. There were two choices—either give up and drown myself in self-pity or make peace with the situation and face it with a smile. I started seeing everything as an opportunity rather than a hindrance. And that’s what made the difference! They say when life presents you with an opportunity; grab it with both the hands. I did the same, just with 1 and a half!”

Dr Aloma and David Lobo

When Dr Aloma and David Lobo had opened their home and hearts to an abandoned baby girl, little did they know that their lives would be the ones to be enriched!

Together they battled societal stigmas, public insensitivity and even ridiculous remarks, for Nisha was born with a rare genetic condition. This is even more extraordinary considering that adoption is by no means easy in this country, or widespread.

But the hidden talents that the world failed to see, the couple and their kids saw immediately, which is unquestionably why Nisha is a fierce fighter and independent woman today.

“As much as Nisha needed us, so did we, in a funnily interesting way. More like a wise, old soul, she taught us what a family truly means—we look out for one another through thick and thin. Our journey together has been more of a learning curve, where we have learnt more from her than what we could teach her. ‘Don’t react, respond,’ is what she often tells me when I lose my cool upon coming across insensitive comments and attitude.

What India needs to begin addressing is how we treat our children—the little human beings who are worthy of love, family and security. Defining them by only their ‘condition’ makes us all part of the societal failure that denies them the identity of the person they all are.”

Dr Umesh and Dr Ashwini Sawarkar

When their three-month-old daughter passed away following a road accident, the first thought that came into the minds of Dr Umesh and Dr Ashwini Sawarkar was to donate their only child’s organs.

For organ donation was their only hope to keep their daughter alive through somebody else.

As much as their poignant thought was noble, a grotesque reality awaited the grieving parents. Many grey areas existed in the field of infant organ donation, and their one last hope of donating their baby’s organs sadly didn’t find the light of the day. By the time the formalities were completed, the procedure was no longer a viable option.

To address this void and draw the attention of the government and Ministry of Health, Dr Umesh wrote a heartbreaking letter to the Prime Minister. The viral message has now become a hope for parents in India.

“Life is indeed difficult for those who are left behind to cope up with loss of their loved ones. When the doctors declared our daughter brain dead, there wasn’t anything left for us to do. But together, we nursed this vision of donating our baby’s organs. We believed that through organ donation, we would be able not just to keep the memories of our daughter alive, but also give someone in need a second chance at life. It was possibly what kept us strong through this excruciatingly painful time. More than the sadness of losing our child, what saddened us further was that this dream of ours couldn’t be fulfilled.”

Deepika Mhatre

How often do you come across a standup comic who is also a house help? In India, there is never a shortage of extraordinary stories, and Mumbai resident Deepika Mhatre’s is no exception.

From selling imitation jewellery to passengers on the local trains to working as a domestic help in five houses, life was quite tedious for this 43-year-old. But she chose to deal with it through humour.

Perhaps it would have remained as just another hobby, had it one been for a talent show one of her employers hosted for the house helps a year ago. That changed Deepika’s life.

She was a smashing success in the talent show – which triggered in her the belief that she could do this full time. There are no fairy tales or godmothers in the real world, so things progressed slowly. But eventually, one thing led to another, and Deepika began doing comic sketches professionally. Her sketches are based on her own experiences as a house help – showcasing both the good and the bad.

Sonam Wangchuk

This is the man whose extraordinary life had inspired the filmmakers of ‘3 Idiots’ to craft the unforgettable character of Phunsukh Wangdu.

The 52-year-old engineer from Leh had garnered national attention when he established a revolutionary school in 1988, which admitted kids written off as failures by society. Wangchuk’s sole intent was to make learning fun and practical rather than subjecting kids to rote learning.

Later, his ground-breaking innovations like ‘Ice Stupas’ and solar heated mud huts put him on the global radar for finding sustainable solutions in difficult terrains.

Dadarao Bilhore

The loss of a child is enough to change any life. But how does one deal with such a devastating blow?

Dadarao Bilhore lost his 16-year-old son to a road accident – thanks to a pothole. Within a month of the child’s tragic demise, Bilhore began a crusade that changed into a lifelong journey. He now fills up every single pothole he comes across in Mumbai.

Armed with broken paver blocks, gravel, stones and a shovel, from 2015 to date, he has filled over 600 potholes.

Known as the ‘Pothole Dada of Mumbai’, he has also been relentlessly fighting to bring legal justice against errant contractors and civic authorities and does not plan to quit until fair reparations have been made.

“Every pothole that I’ve filled so far is like a ‘Shradhanjali’ to my son Prakash. For I don’t want anyone else to suffer an irreplaceable loss that we have to live through for the rest of our lives. How long can one depend on the civic bodies, who continue to wait for yet another person to succumb before filling up the potholes? We are all taxpaying members of the society, and if we don’t become watchdogs of the administration, this will continue to happen. It’s time we put an end to it, and for change to happen, we should come and stand together as a society.”

Purnota Bahl

The sight of a tiny baby foot in a cancer ward reminded Purnota Bahl of her just-born daughter—a life-changing moment that would go on to change the lives of thousands of cancer-afflicted kids from low-income households across India.

This incident led Indian School of Business (ISB) alumnus Purnota to found the Cuddles Foundation, India’s only organisation providing a dedicated, nutrition-centred service charted down by professional nutritionists for underprivileged families fighting cancer.

Since its inception in 2011, the Cuddles Foundation has reached out to over 35,000 kids across 13 cities in collaboration with 22 partner hospitals and Purnota is hopeful of taking their all-women run mission to different parts of the country in future.

“Giving back to the society is not only a responsibility for others but also a deeply rewarding experience for oneself. We live in an extremely interconnected and interdependent world. Problems and issues are out there. Each one impacts our children and us. From environmental to health to human rights, you name it. So, if not for others we need to work for our kids. It’s the same world and environment that they will inherit. Not to mention, it brings in immense gratitude, perspective in our lives while strengthening our values.”

Baby Halder

She was only 12 when Baby was married off to a man 14 years older. Struggling through an abusive marriage for over a decade, she decided to put an end to all her miseries by taking off with her three kids to Delhi in 1999.

Turning a new page in life, she began working as a domestic help at several homes, where she’d often face humiliation for being a single parent. But things finally looked up for Baby, when she began working at the home of writer and retired anthropology professor Prabodh Kumar.

From encouraging her to read and then pen down her story, Kumar helped bring out the author in Baby and today, her book, Aalo Aandhari is hailed across the world as an incredible story of survival.

“The only thing that is stopping us is our own inhibitions. In India, there are too many barriers for women—sometimes it is inaccessibility to education while sometimes it is patriarchy that prevents them from achieving great things in life. It is time we become our own heroes and fight for ourselves. Education is perhaps the best weapon in present times to bring down societal stigmas and break free. It is indeed the stairway for women towards independence and to make choices for themselves. I would urge everyone that never stop believing in yourself and continue your fight until your last breath.”

It was the kindness of a stranger that put a roof over Murugan’s head, who had lived many years of his childhood on the streets of Kochi while scavenging through garbage to fill his stomach.

When he could finally manage to fend for himself, he decided to return the favour by embarking on a lifelong mission to ensure that the homeless in his city will have someone to care for them.

Through his organisation, Theruvora Pravarthaka Association, Murugan has rescued thousands of homeless children, elderly and ailing people from across Kerala over the last two decades and has given them a sense of dignity that even the state government failed to provide.

“No matter how big one is in their social standing, one thing most people forget is that we do not bring anything with us when we are born, nor do we take anything when we die. The few years that we have on this Earth should be one that leaves behind an impact, and I believe that can be achieved by caring for our fellow beings—especially those who have no one.

It is perhaps the best way to give back to the planet, which has given us everything for our sustenance. In this age of smartphones and social media, everyone is ready to preach but never willing to practice. Let’s us all strive together to change that and make the world more compassionate through caring and sharing.”

Alagarathanam Natarajan

After moving back to India from London, Natarajan partook in many endeavours to uplift underprivileged members of society. But the sweltering heat of Delhi summers prompted the man to turn his attention to water and how he could help to alleviate this issue.

By placing a water cooler outside his own home, his eyes opened to the grim reality of water poverty. People couldn’t walk even a fair distance to quench their thirst. Extremely saddened, Natarajan took it upon himself to install several matkas, or earthen pots, in various parts of South Delhi.

This feat has now earned him the moniker of ‘Matka Man’. He refills each one of them through a van that he drives around himself.

“What propelled me was the indifference we all have for the poor. They don’t even have water in this age and time. Instead, the state sells water to them in mobile carts. The best I have learnt in this journey is there is no limit in giving to the community, water has just been the beginning for me and my learning every day is a wonderful experience and cleansing for the soul. I am 70 years old, and I have learnt from my early days that never take no for an answer. Living in Panchsheel park, I hope one day I can make this colony an example of kindness and care to the nation. We must lead by example, and I am the first example—I say this not for self-praise but for the lack of a better phrase.”

1. Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa is recognized as one of the most selfless beings in the world for her work in uplifting the poor and for electing to live among them to understand their hardships better.

Her contribution was recognized by the Nobel peace prize that she received in 1979.

At a very young age, Mother Teresa felt her calling to religious service. She took her vows as a nun in 1937.

After a few years of being a teacher near the convent she was in, she decided that her true calling was to live independently among the poor and serve them from there.

She spent the rest of her life making things better for the poor with selfless devotion.

2. Indira Gandhi

Indira Gandhi is to date, the only female Prime Minister of India. She held this post for 3 consecutive years and went on to serve an unprecedented fourth term.

Indian freedom and therefore the politics was still in a nascent stage during her time and she did much to shape a newly birthed India as a democratic country.

A key figure in the Indian National Congress, she did not let setbacks like being ousted from the party deter her from her vision.

She founded a new party and inspired many to follow her. Her indomitable spirit is certainly an inspiration to women all over the world.

3. Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian origin to venture into space as an astronaut.  Her life tragically ended in the Space Shuttle Columbia when the shuttle exploded on reentry into Earth’s atmosphere due to technical faults.

Her career at NASA began with duties of researching Computational Fluid Dynamics for take-off and landing procedures. She was a Certified Flying Instructor when she applied for the NASA astronaut corps.

On her first flight aboard the Columbia in 1997, she logged in more than 367 hours in space. However, a malfunction occurred in the satellite that she was responsible for deploying.

Despite the malfunction not being her fault but that of the ground and flight crew, she was given technical duties for 6 years until 2003 when she finally went on her second flight mission into space that ended in the tragic explosion.

She was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor for her service to the United States of America.

4. Indra Nooyi

Indra Nooyi made the world sit up and take notice when she became the CEO of the world’s second-largest corporation in the world.

As a child, she excelled in academics and went on to attend IIM Calcutta and subsequently, the Yale School of Management.

She has several achievements to her credit. Forbes ranked her 4 th in the list of the most powerful women in Business of 2008. Not content with being second best, she then bettered her own ranking by topping the list in 2009.

She has a long list of titles to her credit including the third most powerful mom in the world .

5. Aishwarya Rai

Miss World of 1994, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has come a long way since her modelling days.

Her dazzling beauty made many participants back out of the Miss India contest because they did not dare contend against her.

She has used her prominence to be a part of many charities and social causes like eye donation and eradication of Polio.

Her wax statue stands at Madame Tussaud’s museum in London as a testament to her beauty. She also has a tulip in the Netherlands named after her.

The beauty queen is actively involved in raising awareness of the UN’s poverty alleviation efforts.

6. Priyanka Chopra

  Another Miss World, she is currently making waves all around the globe with her beauty, wit and acting skills.

Apart from being an actress in Bollywood and Hollywood, she dabbles in film production, singing and social work.

She has won the National Award and numerous Filmfare awards. In India, she has been awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest award for civilians.

With her debut as the main protagonist of the successful American TV show, Quantico, she became the darling of the media all across the world.

In 2016, Time magazine included her in a list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The next year, Forbes listed her amongst the 100 most influential women in the world.

7. Ela Bhatt

Trained as a lawyer, Ela Bhatt is a major figure in international movements for various causes including and especially women’s rights.

In 1972, Ela founded the Self-Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA). She held the position of  General Secretary from 1972 to 1996.

She is the recipient of several national and international awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1977), Right Livelihood Award (1984) and the Padma Bhushan (1986).

Ela is a strong advocate of equality for women and girls, especially on the issue of child marriage and works towards this goal along with The Elders.

The Elders are an International organization of global leaders brought together by Nelson Mandela in 2007 to work for peace and human rights. They work independently from any governmental organization.

8. Mary Kom

Magnificent Mary has more than earned the epithet. She is an Indian Olympic boxer who has made waves in international sports by becoming the World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times.

She is also the only woman boxer to have won a medal in every one of the seven world championships. She has broken barriers to make firsts with her fists both as a woman boxer and as a boxer of any gender.

Magnificent Mary became the first Indian woman boxer to get a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 and the first Indian Woman Boxer to win Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

9. Dipa Karmakar

For the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games, an Indian female gymnast made India a force to reckon with, by winning a bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Dipa has a string of ‘firsts’ to her name including a gold medal in the vault event of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey on July 18th.

She is one of the only five women who has successfully landed the Produnova, which is regarded as the toughest vault currently performed in women’s gymnastics.

Her journey to bronze and gold wasn’t easy. She had flat feet which could adversely affect a gymnast’s performance. She trained extensively to develop an arch in her feet that would later spring her to success.

Karmakar is a recipient of the Padma Shri and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.

10. Belinda Wright

Kolkatta-born Belinda Wright’s story reads straight from a thriller novel.

She is the executive director of the Wildlife Protection Society of India, an organisation she founded in 1994 to stop the poaching of wild animals especially tigers.

Growing up as she did in the tiger-infested jungles of Bihar, she was sensitized to the plight of wild creatures from the beginning.

She became a very successful wildlife photographer and even bagged two Emmy awards for her film, Land of the Tiger.

She has put her own life at risk to save hundreds of creatures and was brave enough to go on undercover missions by posing as a potential buyer and exposing the extent of the wildlife skin trade in Tibet.

Like the ones on the list, there are so many women who are breaking barriers every day in every field and showing other women that the fight can be fought.

He came back from Jail in 1990 and was awarded Nobel Peace Price in the year 1993 for dismantling apartheid in South Africa. He became the first black president of South Africa in the Democratic Elections held in 1994.

Abraham Lincoln born on 12th February and brought up in  Kentucky where he did his meagre education as he has to continuously juggle between jobs and work for the sake of his family. He was known for bringing emancipation of slaves in the United States. Being a self-taught lawyer and legislator Lincoln became one of the great personalities of the American Civil War. He was the 16th President of the US just before the outbreak of civil war. Lincoln used an unconventional approach to being a war leader and addressed the problems and circumstances rather than simply bringing out new policies and laying out designs.

He took an experimental approach and blended statecraft in the direction of armies and utilized his common sense and practical insight and brought triumph to the country as a savvy leader.  It’s not just his military genius that sets him apart from all the presidents he is the one responsible for the abolishment of slavery in America.

Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam also known as A.P.J Abdul Kalam is an Aerospace Scientist who bought in astonishing technical reforms in the country. He is known as the People’s favorite leader and Missile Man of India. He did everything needed for the nation’s civilian space program and military missile development right from introducing launch vehicle facility and ballistic missile to supporting 2nd round of nuclear tests at Pokhran.

A.P.J Abdul Kalam spent almost 40 years of his career in ISRO and DRDO as a Scientist and Administrator. After retiring from his post as 11th President of India(2002-2007) he became a visiting professor at IITs, IIM’s, and Several Universities to motivate students to compete with the world.
