What’s The Problem? – Writing A Thesis In French Posted by John Bauer on Aug 31, 2016 in Culture , Vocabulary

These past few weeks I’ve been hard at work on mon mémoire (my thesis). The last big project for un diplôme (a degree) is always hard, and writing un mémoire in another language makes the whole process even more of un casse-tête (a headache).

"Place de la Sorbonne" by Alan on Flickr. Licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 2.0.

“ Place de la Sorbonne ” by Alan on Flickr. Licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 2.0.

I came to France to do mon master (my Master’s), and it has been an interesting exeprience learning how nobody’s perfect and what a CM and TD are . Now hard at work on mon mémoire , I’m struggling to find enough café (coffee) to keep me going.

Writing more than cinquante pages (fifty pages) en français has been tough. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve mixed up the words une mémoire (a memory) and un mémoire (a thesis). Not to mention all the other dual gender nouns .

To make things easier, le mémoire should follow le plan (the outline), but sometimes il est difficile de savoir par où commencer (it’s hard to know where to start).

"Plan de dissertation" by dicophilo on Flickr. Licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0.

“ Plan de dissertation ” by dicophilo on Flickr. Licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0.

Figuring out une problématique is a big part of writing un mémoire . Once you have une idée (an idea) you have to fix not just le grammaire (the grammar), but le raisonnement et la logique (the reasoning and logic) as well.

C’est quoi une problématique ? What is une problématique?

Une problématique is a thesis statement to some people. In my experience, they are used in the same general educational contexts. Cependant (however), they do not mean exactly the same thing.

The word for a thesis statement is une thèse principale or un énoncé de la thèse .

It’s a subtle difference, but la problématique is more about defining the research problem or outlining the research problem rather than a summary of the main point or presenting un point de vue (a point of view) and making a claim.

It can be difficult to understand how to succeed in the French education system without understanding this difference. Surtout (especially) because in the classroom you’ll hear le professeur (the professor) talk about the importance of la problématique in the same way you would hear le professeur talk about the thesis statement in aux États-Unis (in the United States).

There is also a lot to learn about les travaux universitaires (academic writing). All the nuances of specific wordings can easily get lost in translation. The main ideas of writing clearly, citing your sources, creating a bibliography, and proper formatting are all the same, but the details can be different enough that figuring out how to write correctly is un casse-tête .

De plus (what’s more), if you went to school in the US, you are probably familiar with MLA or APA formatting and it’s hard to realize that those are American guidelines.

Ne vous inquiétez pas ! Don’t worry!

In France, all the information you need is in le guide de mise en page (the style guide) provided by le professeur .

Maintenant (now), the biggest problem I have is that with la canicule it’s too hot to drink du café !

Thesis Translation: Why? How? When?

Why thesis editing and translation is something you need to think about now.

Female academic writes her thesis

If you are a graduate student or a postdoctoral fellow at a university outside of the English-speaking world, chances are that you have spent some time thinking about when and whether to translate your research into English. In the humanities and the sciences alike, English is the dominant language of academic scholarship, and few would doubt that there are enormous advantages to producing journal articles and books in English. What younger scholars-in-training increasingly realize is that they also have good reasons to consider taking their first scholarly steps in English, even before their first academic article is published. Indeed, with wise use of thesis translation or thesis editing services, graduate students can get a head start in some very important ways.

thesis french translation

Why produce a thesis in English?

Unlike a book or a journal article, a thesis or dissertation only officially needs to be accepted by your university department or your committee. This prevents some graduate students from ‘thinking big’ about the reach of their thesis or dissertation. Many universities outside of the English-speaking world offer the option of submitting a thesis in English, yet some graduate students don’t consider the option seriously. Here are a few reasons why it is worth doing so:

  • Wider audience for your thesis itself: While a thesis is not officially a ‘publication’ in the way a book or journal article are, in the 21st century your thesis will be as widely accessible to scholars globally as many academic journals, through ProQuest and other electronic repositories. Scholars looking for the latest research in your field will be much more likely to find – and use – your work if it is available to them online in a language that they can read.
  • Future applications: If you are writing an M.A. thesis, chances are that you are thinking about applying to doctoral programs. If you are finishing a doctoral dissertation, you might be thinking about post-doctoral fellowships. Whatever your next step, the application process is likely to require submission of a writing sample. If your best research is already in English, you will be able to use it as part of your application for most programs worldwide.
  • Future publication: Of course, most young scholars aspire to eventually publish their research in book or article form. If your thesis is in English, you will have a much wider range of publishers and journals to choose from. And once you are published, your work will be accessible to a wider range of readers.

thesis french translation

Thesis translation: How and When?

Convinced? If so, the next question is when and how to go about translating articles into English. There are three main options:

  • Thesis Editing: write it in English, then get it edited . If you have good English, you might decide to write your thesis or dissertation in English from the outset. If your supervisor and department give their blessing, this option might be the most efficient. Once your work is completed, you can employ thesis editing services to ensure it has the highest level of polish and clarity.
  • Thesis translation before submission . Perhaps you are most comfortable writing in your mother tongue, but still want the advantages of a thesis in English. If so, you can employ thesis translation services as you go along – perhaps on a chapter-by-chapter basis. If your university gives permission, you may be able to submit the English translation as the official version of your thesis.
  • Translation after acceptance . Even if your thesis needs to be submitted to your university in another language, it is never too late to produce an English version. When translating an already-accepted thesis into English, you might choose to think about it already as a book manuscript draft (or drafts of a series of articles). In fact, you might even want to edit and alter the original version before sending it for translation, in order to tailor it to your desired publishing house or journals.

In short: A scholarly output in English can be of great benefit, even at the earliest stages of an academic career. And there are many ways to make it happen!

How to translate foreign-language theses into English?

i found many papers and thesis written in different languages than English, mainly Portuguese and Chinese. is there an efficient way to benefit from these papers and thesis instead of translating them using Google translate.

If you have access to the digital copies, then dump the entire thing into Google translate so you can skim read it. Having done that, it would be a good idea to find a native speaker and get them to check the translation of specific sections that seem relevant on the basis of the automated translations. I wouldn't suggest asking a native speaker to translate the whole thing, or even read the automatically generated translation of the entire thing.

Another thing you could do is see if you can find other papers that cite the papers that you're looking at. One of them may contain a summary that'll tell you if you need to bother pursuing that particular paper. This will be pot luck though, and it will be a lot easier to just use Google translate.

Of course, don't use Google's translations in your work; get a native speaker to help you when it comes to that.

  • It seems that Google translation has been improved quite a bit since last time I used it(a while ago). I just tested it using some articles in Chinese. The result is pretty much understandable. –  Nobody Commented Apr 22, 2014 at 13:18
  • Yeah, this method isn't going to be great for complex things of course, but at least it'll let you know which sections you can completely ignore, and will let you get the gist of the paper. –  Jangari Commented Apr 22, 2014 at 23:03
  • 1 Yes. Knowing a language yourself is better, so is hiring someone who does if you can do that, but life is too short to not use Google Translate. –  Colin McLarty Commented Feb 16, 2017 at 19:42

If you have some knowledge of the source language, you can use Linguee.com to find the best translation of a word out of documents which have been translated (EU commission's texts for instance). Thus, you'll have the word in all its possible contexts. This is very useful for legal or technical vocabulary.

galeop's user avatar

A good working knowledge of languages is important for many fields of research. Google translate is good, but no substitute for actually being able to just read the article in the original. You don't need to know that many languages for most fields. I recommend that you pick up at least one research language other than English. Which one will be most useful will depend on your field and perhaps your specific topic. (My topic requires Latin, for instance.)

What Does AIN Mean in the 2024 Paris Olympics?

Josh wilson | 11 hours ago.

Olympics logo at Paris 2024

For a vast majority of athletes and teams in the Paris Olympics, their nationality will be clearly identified by their country's flag. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) organize each participating nation's athletes and Olympic sporting activities.

In 2024, though, two NOCs are banned from participating in the Olympics, which paved the way for a need for athletes whose passports are from those countries to need an alternate way in.

Russia and Belarus were both banned from participating in the 2024 Olympics due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

What Does AIN mean at the Olympics?

AIN is an initialization of a French term that translates to Individual Neutral Athletes . While the International Olympic Committee wanted to ban Russia and Belarus to take a stand against the war, it did not want to cause undo harm or exclusion to individual athletes who are otherwise approved in the eyes of the Olympic committee.

Russian and Belarusian athletes will compete as individuals with no national representation under AIN in 2024. They need to meet a strict set of qualifications (primarily, they are expected to state no active support of Russia's interests in Ukraine) to be allowed to participate.

The Olympics website lists 32 athletes competing under AIN.

DeepL's next-gen LLM outperforms ChatGPT-4, Google, and Microsoft for translation quality

thesis french translation

What you need to know about our latest language model:

Our next-generation (“next-gen”) language model outperforms Google Translate, ChatGPT-4, and Microsoft for translation quality

The new LLM's translations require fewer edits, with Google needing 2x and ChatGPT-4 needing 3x more edits to achieve the same quality

Built using our own groundbreaking, specialized LLM technology and proprietary training data, designed specifically for translation

The same enterprise-level security you’re used to for Pro customers

As part of our mission to provide the highest quality translations to businesses around the world, we’re excited to introduce our next-generation language model to DeepL Translator.

Powered by Language AI, alongside bespoke translation and writing technology, our new language model takes translation excellence to the next level— requiring fewer edits and improving knowledge worker productivity. This helps your enterprise save more time and money translating by further streamlining global communication.

Read on to learn more about our latest language model—then be sure to enable the new model (starting with Japanese, German, and Simplified Chinese to and from English) via our in-product selector, and give it a try for yourself .

What can you expect from our next-gen model?

Images of two people using large language models and natural language processing for translation

There’s lots to be excited about with our next-gen model. Let’s cover the most important topics.

Groundbreaking technology that outperforms competitors

DeepL’s models are trained on the highest-quality linguistic data, with an unwavering focus on excellence. Combining world-class AI with the expertise of thousands of hand-picked language specialists who “tutor” the model, DeepL consistently provides best-in-class translation.

In fact, recent blind tests show that language experts routinely prefer DeepL's translations. According to the data, DeepL’s translation is preferred:

1.3x more often than Google Translate

1.7x more often than ChatGPT-4

2.3x more often than Microsoft

But that’s not all. Thanks to specialized LLMs, which are uniquely tuned for language, DeepL’s more human-like translations also have a reduced risk of hallucinations and misinformation . This is especially important for enterprises looking to scale operations with a trusted AI solution.

Furthermore, unlike general purpose models that train with data pulled from the public internet, DeepL’s model leverages over seven years of proprietary data specifically tuned for translation and content creation.

Highest-quality translations on the market

Starting with Japanese, German, and Simplified Chinese to and from English, with many more languages to come, this step forward continues to improve on the top-notch translations that DeepL’s web translator provides. With the innovations of the next-gen model, DeepL Translator provides the highest quality translations on the market .

The quality of our next-gen models was confirmed via our previously mentioned blind tests, which were conducted with leading language experts. In these tests, the quality of the LLM-powered translations compared to the “classic” model was determined—with the new model coming out on top for each test.

Japanese ←→ English: the quality of the next-gen model is 1.7x better than the classic model

Simplified Chinese ←→ English: the quality of the next-gen model is 1.7x better than the classic model

German ←→ English: the quality of the next-gen model is 1.4x better than the classic model

This improved translation quality will not only save your company time , but also allow your teams to streamline communications across global markets.

Improve productivity to save more time and money

Our next-generation model will help your enterprise get even more value from DeepL. In fact, blind tests also found that DeepL’s translations require fewer edits than competitors, with Google Translate needing 2x more edits and ChatGPT-4 needing 3x more edits to achieve the same quality.

Thus, our new LLMs improve knowledge worker productivity by decreasing the time spent on translation and copy editing, allowing your teams to focus on the jobs that matter the most.

In fact, in the 2024 study conducted by Forrester Consulting, “ The Total Economic Impact™ of DeepL ”, it was discovered that DeepL reduced translation time by 90% and cut translation workloads by 50%— resulting in a 345% ROI .*

The same security and privacy you’re used to

Just like before, our next-gen model is built with security at its core thanks to:

Our proprietary data centers

The highest level of certification and compliance standards:

ISO 27001 certification

GDPR compliance

SOC 2 type 2 report

A commitment to never using Pro customer data to train our models

Take your enterprise communication to the next level with higher-quality translations

Our next-gen model represents another major step forward in providing your enterprise with increasingly powerful features. With this significant increase in translation quality—which improves upon our “classic” model and outperforms competitors— we’re raising the bar for AI translation tools everywhere .

How can your company start making use of our next-gen model? It’s easy: Pro users can switch between the next-gen LLM and “classic” model with the click of a button.

Try out the next-gen model with your Pro plan, or consider upgrading to Pro .

Celine Dion Closes Opening Ceremony With Triumphant Return to Stage

It was the first public performance since 2020 for Dion, who has a rare neurological disorder known as stiff person syndrome.

Large silver Olympic rings hanging above Celine Dion as she performs.

  • July 26, 2024

The stakes could not have been higher for Celine Dion’s first public performance since 2020. After canceling tour dates, in 2022 she announced that she was suffering from a rare neurological disorder known as stiff person syndrome , which causes muscle spasms, including constrictions of her vocal cords. “I Am: Celine Dion,” the documentary released this year, showed her struggling to sing at a recording session.

Her performance at the Olympics opening ceremony was a song from Edith Piaf, the petite, tangy-voiced, dramatic and quintessentially French chanson singer who was nicknamed “the Little Sparrow.” The song, “Hymne à l’amour,” envisions a love that outlasts the end of the world, and it’s the kind of soaring, swelling, long-breathed anthem that Dion used to belt to the rafters.

Like sports, singing has a demanding physicality of its own. Dion faced a live, real-time test with a worldwide audience.

And in a long, white glittering dress, she seized her moment. She relied on subtlety along with lung power. Perhaps her voice was a little scratchier, at times, than before her illness. But the drama of the moment was matched by the dynamics of her performance, rising to an unaccompanied peak before a triumphant final phrase. Yes, she nailed the landing.

Jon Pareles has been The Times’s chief pop music critic since 1988. He studied music, played in rock, jazz and classical groups and was a college-radio disc jockey. He was previously an editor at Rolling Stone and the Village Voice. More about Jon Pareles

#8 Graduate thesis

Mei's English Journal

Hi, it’s Mei here. I’ve just completed my final thesis defense and successfully met all the requirements to graduate from university. While I’m relieved to have accomplished this milestone, I do feel a bit nostalgic about my college life. It’s hard to believe that I’m transitioning from being a student to a Shakai-jin (a working adult). As I reflect on my current situation and the new stage of life I’m entering, I want to share my graduate thesis briefly, which was a major focus of My university years. The Theme of My Graduate Thesis The theme of my thesis is “A Balance between Learning and Ibasho: Perspectives of Children with Overseas Roots”. I was introduced to the concept of  Ibasho at a seminar in 2022, which sparked my interest in understanding its significance. While “Ibasho” doesn’t have a direct English translation, it encompasses 3 key ideas: a safe place, trustworthy interpersonal relationship, and a positive outlook for the near future. Over my 4 years at university, I’ve come to realize that Ibasho is crucial for everyone’s happiness and serves as a foundational element in creating a better society. Consequently, I chose to explore the importance of Ibasho in my thesis, focusing on children with overseas roots and their experiences in Japanese public schools. The Summary of the Content Rather than delving into the full details of my 20,000-characters thesis, I’ll provide a summary of the main points:

1.  It’s possible to balance learning and Ibasho by emphasizing their aspects at a school, Academic ability, and Social connection, rather than just theoretical definitions. 2. For children with overseas roots, achieving this balance is particularly challenging due to their unique backgrounds. 3. Japanese education should place greater emphasis on Ibasho or Social connection.

While this summary is brief, the core message of my thesis is the critical importance of Ibasho. Future Prospects Working on my thesis allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of Ibasho, which was a valuable learning experience. Moving forward, I aim to embody and promote the concept of Ibasho in my own life and work, particularly for those who feel they have nowhere to go. I’m committed to preserving and fostering sustainable Ibasho for everyone and intend to dedicate my efforts to this mission. As a first step, I pledge to cherish both myself and my loved ones, and contribute to my company by encouraging others to believe in their potential and have confidence in themselves. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore my interests through this thesis. Thank you to my university, my professors, and my classmates for their support and guidance💛

Who is Gojira? What to know about metal band at Olympics opening ceremony

thesis french translation

Editor’s note:   Follow   Olympics opening ceremony live updates .

Athletes will be vying for gold over the next two weeks, but a different kind of metal stole the show on Friday.

Sandwiched between showtunes from "Les Miserables" and "Carmen," the French heavy-metal band Gojira made a head-banging appearance during the Olympics opening ceremony, giving viewers a certain level of culture shock.

First greeted by a headless Marie Antoinette, Gojira performed at the Conciergerie along the River Seine.

Here's what to know.

So Gojira at the Paris Olympics. Why!? Don’t they know the standard formula of getting some old washed out has been to sing a washed out hit!? Well done Paris on trying something sonically & visually very different. l!👏👏 The winner was metal! pic.twitter.com/6TSTmd8uKJ — Punt Road (@punt_rd) July 26, 2024

Who is Gojira, metal band at opening ceremony?

Gojira is made up of Joe Duplantier, Mario Duplantier, Christian Andreu and Jean-Michel La- badie. They performed at the Conciergerie, which was the residence of French kings in medieval times.

It became a prison during the French Revolution, and Marie Antoinette was one of its most famous prisoners. Gojira performed alongside singer Marina Viotti.

The name of the band is inspired by the legendary kaiju Godzilla, and they were originally named Godzilla until 2001. They are three-time Grammy Award nominees and most recently released their album "Fortitude" in 2021.

Gojira performs metal and different subgenres, including progressive metal and groove metal.

Marie Antoinette may have lost her head, but if she still had one, she'd be banging it in 2024 thanks to Gojira.
