The 15 th of March was my last day at college. Following one month, the assessment would begin. I was feeling blended joy – cheerful and miserable simultaneously. On the one side, I felt diminished towards the finish of the scholarly year. I struggled to accomplish my objectives throughout the previous two years. I got 430 marks in the initial segment and made certain of getting brilliant marks in the following part. I needed to turn into a specialist in the future. The very inclination that I was currently closer to my objective fulfilled me. Along these lines, it was a day that implied a great deal for me.

Friends depart, and memory takes them To her caverns, pure and deep. (Thomas Haynes)

On the opposite side, it was the snapshot of separating. The charming days of the past rang a bell and their remembrance made me tragic. I remembered my first day at college. At the point when I fell prey to the kidding and tricking of the senior understudies. Following one year, I was a senior kid and pulled many pranks on first-year understudies. The sweet recollections of the two years started to sparkle in my psyche. There was a grin all the rage and tears in my eyes.

See: My First Day at College

In our college, there is a custom that the lesser understudies give a goodbye party to the senior active understudies. The last day in college is made a significant event for them. As per the custom of the college, the understudies of the primary year class coordinated in an unbelievable capacity under the oversight of a senior teacher. The college was designed with buntings and banners. Most importantly, we gathered in the grass of the college for a gathering photo. Then, at that point, we went to the college corridor for additional exercises.

There is no substitute for hard work. (Edison)

The head of our college managed the capacity. The delegate of the principal year class made a goodbye discourse. He paid because of the second-year understudies for their co-activity and direction. He vowed to follow the impressions of the seniors. I, in the interest of my group colleagues, delivered a discourse. I paid because of the instructors for their resolute and magnanimous endeavors to edify the personalities of the understudies. I additionally liked the primary year understudies for organizing such an awesome capacity in the distinction of the active senior understudies. I made a guarantee that the send year understudies would work almost to excess to light up the name of the college.

Then, at that point, the commendable chief gave a rich discourse. He encouraged us to play out our obligations genuinely as an understudy and as a resident of the common society. Eventually, our chief gave us his favors and wished us achievement in our future profession. It was a rousing and critical discourse. Every one of the understudies applauded when he completed his discourse.

Heavy hearts, like heavy clouds in the sky, Are best relieved by the letting of water. (Revarol)

The conventional addresses were trailed by a theatrical presentation. It was coordinated for the diversion of the understudies and visitors. The understudies played out a couple of tomfoolery fair things. Toward the finish of the show, we were presented with tea, bread rolls, cakes, and organic product. The goodbye party was an incredible achievement in each regard.

It was the finish of a magnificent range of two years at my college. I had invested a ton of cheerful energy there. I participated in discussions and sports effectively and won many prizes. A portion of my instructors incredibly affected me and illuminated my viewpoint. I additionally make a couple of new companions whose decent organization was remarkable for me.

The last day at my college was, to be sure, a paramount day in my life. Every one of the active understudies disappeared from their instructors and companions with heavy hearts. At the point when I was leaving college, there were tears in my eyes.

Essay on My Last day at college with Quotations for Class 12

“the quality of a college is measured more by the kind of students it turns out than the kinds it takes in.”  (robert j. kibbee).

There is hardly any living being who has not gone through ups and downs of life. Actually, life is full of bad as well as good incidents. Some of them may be forgotten, whereas others leave an everlasting imprint on the mind.

Write the bad things that are done to you in the sand, but the good things that happen to you on a piece of marble.

Helen Keller, the dumb and deaf American authoress, holds that we do not value the things until we lose them. Her words echoed in my mind on my last day at college. It was only then I realized how much I cherished the college I was going to leave. It seemed to me as if somebody were drawing my soul out from my body. I must acknowledge that I had spent the most valuable time of my life at college and rightly call it the asset of my life.

On my last day at college, I reached college at 9:00 a.m. to attend the farewell party which our juniors had arranged for us. I went to the auditorium where all my friends and fellow students had gathered. It was for the first time that students were no in their uniforms. I was happy that I had availed myself of college opportunity successfully, but I was also sad because I was going to leave the place I valued highly.

As the principal entered the auditorium, all the students and teachers rose from their chairs to welcome him. The ceremony started with the verse from the Holy Quran. Then one of our juniors made the Farwell speech. The speech represented the feelings of our dear juniors for us. It appreciated the guidance we had given to our juniors. The speaker ended his speech with the best wishes for our prosperous and bright future.

Friends depart, and memory takes them To her caverns, pure and deep.” – ( Thomas Haynes)

Then it came to the entertainment performances by our juniors. They made some acting comedy performances, which we enjoyed a lot. I remember the time when we, the seniors, used to occupy the stage, but that day we were guests and our juniors were our hosts. They were going to replace us and we were departing with fine impressions.

I, the representative of the seniors, we then called the stage to express my feelings. I recited a poem that I had written for this occasion. In the poem, I paid tribute to the worthy professors who had enlightened us and infused in us a thirst for knowledge. I also thanked the principal and our juniors for all they had said about us.

Then the principal made his goodbye speech. He gave some valuable pieces of advice and wished a continued success for our future. He advised us that “purpose of life is to live a life of purpose. As long as you live, keep learning how to live.” At the end of the ceremony, we enjoyed high tea with the principal, professors and the juniors.

“The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.”  (Robert Maynard)

We had video cameras with us and we were capturing these precious moments not only in our cameras but also in our hearts. We also took autographs from the principal and our dear teachers. Some of the students took the autographs on their shirts. These were the token of love and remembrance. Then we came to the time to leave forever. Our hearts were heavy with mixed feelings.

Farewell my friends, farewell my foes,

My love with these, may care for those.

My Last Day at College Essay for 2nd Year Graduation

my last day at college essay quotation

  • December 20, 2023

Kainat Shakeel

The last day at college marks the end of a period, a chapter filled with horselaugh, literacy, and lasting friendships. As I pen down my reflections on this significant day, the flood tide of feelings is inviting, a rollercoaster lift of nostalgia and expectation for what lies ahead.

The Journey Begins:

Walking through the college gates for the first time felt like stepping into a world of endless possibilities. The journey wasn’t just about handbooks and examinations but a mosaic of gests that shaped my character. From the first awkward preface to lifelong friends, every moment was a structure block of particular growth.

Academic Achievements:

The academic journey was further than a hunt for grades; it was a pursuit of knowledge that converted me. The challenges and triumphs in the classroom were vital in preparing me for the real world. Each course was a stepping gravestone, contributing to my intellectual elaboration.

The Last Lectures:

The final lectures were a mix of academic wisdom and novelettish farewells. Professors participated inestimable perceptivity, and as the last words echoed through the lecture halls, it actualized on me that this chapter was closing. The exchange of gratefulness and wisdom came as the highlight of those final hours.

An Emotional Farewell:

Saying farewell to friends was the most heart-wrenching part of the last day. The horselaugh participated, the gashes exfoliated, and the pledges created a shade of feelings. The fellowship erected over the times wasn’t just a part of college it was the substance of the entire experience.

A Walk Down Memory Lane:

Roaming around the lot for the last time, I redefined cherished spots. From the library that witnessed innumerous study sessions to the canteen that echoed with horselaugh, each corner held recollections. The nostalgia was palpable as I bid farewell to the place that had come as an alternate home.

Graduation Preparation:

Amidst the emotional farewells, medications for scale added an air of excitement. Choosing the right outfit, rehearsing the walk across the stage, and feeling the expectation of holding that hard-earned degree- the preamble to scale was both whim-whams- wracking and exhilarating.

A Capstone of Dreams:

The day eventually arrived, marked by the fluttering gowns and the sense of accomplishment. The form was a festivity of hard work and determination. As I stood on the stage, the ocean of familiar faces below, I felt a swell of pride and gratefulness for the trip that led me to this moment.

Essay on “My last day at school” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

My last day at school

Saturday, the 20 th Feb, 1977 was my last day at School. On that day we were given preparatory holidays for the Secondary school Examination. The students of class IX arranged a farewell party in honor of the outgoing students of class X.

The school compound was covered with a beautiful shamiana. It was tastefully decorated with buntings and balloons. A stage was set up for speeches and cultural programmed. Under the shamiana, tables and seats were arranged for the students and teachers. The school loudspeaker was filling the atmosphere with the tunes of moving, patriotic film songs.

Students of class X, who were dressed in their best, assembled first of all, in the school garden. ‘There we had a group photographs of small groups of five to six students each. Then we walked up to the school compound, the venue of the Farewell Party. As we entered the compo, the students of class IX welcomed us with cheers. They garlanded us all. We, in turn, garlanded our Principal who always treated us like his own children and the teachers who spared no pains in preparing us for the final examination We took our seats and the programmed started. Our Principal, shri R. P. Goel presided over the function.

First of all, the representative of class IX read out the farewell address. I replied to this address on behalf of the students of class X. I thanked the students of class IX for arranging a grand party. I advised them to try to keep the good traditions of the school in the fields of games, cultural activities and studies. I then, expressed my sense of gratitude to our Principal and teachers who were always kind and nice to us. After this, Manjit, Prem Kant and Party gave us a group song, It was a farewell song and was composed by our Hindi teacher, Sh. A.N. Dixit. All eyes were wet with tears. Our English teacher, Sh. A.N. Saxena, advised us to who is a great scholar and fine speaker, conveyed to us his best wishes and advised us to reach the examination hall well in time. He also told us the method of answering questions in different subjects.

After the speeches were over, we were served with hot tea, samosas,  Barry and fruit. Teachers went round to supervise the arrangement and service done by the student so class IX. This brought the function to an end. I bade farewell to my school and went home.  I shall always remember my last day at school.

My Last Day At School

We have joys and sorrows in life. Birth day give us happiness while last day gives us a feeling of sorrow. We have to leave that place. It is a custom in our school that 11 th class students bid – farewell to the 12 th class. They make the parting day attractive. They arrange a parting feast.

This year, 20 th February, was my last day at school. The school bell rang as usual. The 11 th class boys were sad. After the first period the teachers and the students of both classes met in the school hall. The principal and the teachers sat in the chairs. We, the students , took our seats on the chairs.

The function was started by the students of eleventh class. They read poems.  They sang songs. They made speeches suited to the occasion. Every part of the programme was about the outgoing class.

Then our class incharge rose up. He made a speech which moved our hearts. He told us that we would soon enter the field of life. Our care- free  life would end. Soon after we got our school certificates. After passing this examination we would have to face hard realities of life. He advised us to set an aim of our life and try to achieve it with fair means.

Last of all the Principal rose from his seat. There were clapping on all sides. He made a brief speech. He said that the good of the school , that we were leaving for good, should be at the heart of every students. it was the school and its teachers that had prepared us for the struggle of life. He explained in detail, the advantages of simple living and high thinking. He wished us all a successful life.

Then our monitor thanked the Principal, the teachers and the 11th class students for their good wishes. He promised on behalf of his class fellows that they would keep in mind the  lessons taught by the teachers. He assured the Principal and the teachers that they would never forget their school and worthy teachers. He promised to remove ignorance from villages.

After these speeches the grand tea- party took place. Fruits and sweets were   served in great quantities. We ate them to our fill. There was a lot of fun. At 4 P.M., we were photographed. This was the last item of the function. We left the school  with feelings of joy and sorrow. We were sorry to miss the teachers. We had a feeling of sorrow because we were leaving the class fellow as well as our junior companions. All were wishing for our better future. It was a memorable day.

My Last Day at School

The last day at school comes on the conclusion of the academic year of the 12 th class. Before the start of examinations students of this class are given a farewell party by the next lower class. Since such functions are an annual affair, some solemnity is attached to them and students as well as teachers take part in it.

My last day at school marked by more or less the same feelings. It fell on the 28 th of Feb., 2002. The school hall was decorated. A platform was raised and chairs arranged in many rows. Teachers s tint he front row and since I had been the monitor of my class I was also given a place in the first row. Soon the hall was full.

The occasion was highly emotional. All the outgoing students looked very serious. Everyone seemed to be missing the school days on the one hand and looking forwards into the unknown land of future, all uncertain and vague. No doubt the new life, that is, college life, seemed more glamourous ahead of us but taking the responsibilities of new life seemed more difficult.

The Principal Presided over the function. Since the examinations were at hand so we could hardly lose any item in making long speeches and unnecessary formalities. The Principal spoke for ten minutes. He recalled the years long association of the  outgoing class with the rest of the school and exhorted other class to follow the example of our class in the best traditions of the  school.

There was a tea party. The students of the 11 th class were host to it. I was told to speak a few words other, which I did. But soon my heart began to throb at the idea of parting. I recalled how we and played, read and sat together. How we were displeased at one moment and were the same friends at the next. Speaking at such functions was a maiden experience in my life yet I made a fine job of it though I was later told that my voice trembled as I spoke.

The hosts gave us a fare well speech. The monitor of their class, Sanchit Sharma, Spoke highly of us. He recalled the guidance which we had been giving them from time to time. He said that though we were parting from the school this year yet they would join us next year in this great school of life – the world.

Party over, a group photograph was arranged. We were free now. I deposited my borrowed books with the library and got a clearance certificate. The joyful attitude of my heart gave place to anxiety and seriousness. The very idea of examination   at hand completely gripped my mind and I hurried to my house without loss of time to burry my head in books.

My Last Day At College Essay

My Last Day At College Essay

by Pakiology | Jul 20, 2024 | Essay , English | 0 comments

Today is my last day at college and I am feeling a mix of emotions. On one hand, I am excited to graduate and start a new chapter in my life. On the other hand, I am feeling a sense of sadness and nostalgia as I say goodbye to my friends and teachers who have been a part of my college journey.

As I walk through the college campus for the last time, I am filled with memories of the past four years. I remember the excitement and nervousness I felt on my first day of college, and how quickly I made friends and found my place in the college community.

I also remember the long hours of studying, the late-night cram sessions, and the struggles and challenges that I faced during my college years. But I also remember the support and guidance of my teachers and friends who helped me through the difficult times.

As I reflect on my college experience, I am grateful for the knowledge and skills that I have gained during my time here. I have learned not only from my professors but also from my peers and extracurricular activities. I have grown as a person and developed a sense of independence and self-confidence.

One of the things that I will miss the most about college is the sense of community and belonging that I have experienced here. As a student, I have always felt welcomed and supported by my teachers and peers, and I have been able to develop meaningful relationships with them.

Another thing that I will miss about college is the freedom and flexibility that comes with being a student. I have been able to explore different subjects and activities, and have had the opportunity to discover my passions and interests.

I will also miss the campus and its facilities, such as the library, the gym, and the cafeteria. These have been my second home for the past four years, and I have spent countless hours studying, exercising, and socializing in these places.

I am also grateful for the friendships that I have made during my time at college. These are friendships that will last a lifetime, and I will always cherish the memories that we have made together.

As I say goodbye to college and look toward the future, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. I am ready to take on the challenges of the real world and make my mark on the world. But I will always look back on my college years with fondness and gratitude.

In conclusion, my last day at college is a bittersweet moment for me. I am excited to graduate and start a new chapter in my life, but I will also miss the friends, teachers, and facilities that have been a part of my college experience. I am grateful for the knowledge, skills, and relationships that I have gained during my time here, and I will always look back on my college years with fondness.

As the saying goes, “The teacher lifts him from the earth and takes him to heaven.”

Then the students also have the right to bend their knees whenever they go in front of the teachers. It is true that students who do not respect their teachers are cannot get respect. So all our classmates stood by their teachers. When the teacher came, everyone said that now is your last day in this college. But the memories will always be with you. There are two paths in the world, one is good and the other is bad. If you walk on the right path, you will raise the name of yourself and your parents. And the other way is the way of destruction and disgrace which will ruin the whole life. Similar speeches were made by other teachers. And also you can read about the Emotional farewell speech by students of class 12 class.

“There is no one in the world like a teacher. Leads students toward the top”

” College life is as precious as a fish in water”

last day of college emotional speech

Our juniors also arranged food and drink for us. This included samosas, fritters, jellies, and formalities. Then, at the end of the meeting, everyone ate heartily and burped. The principal of the college started his speech during the meal which I still remember. It never crossed my mind that he said it was not his fault for starving, it was his fault for starving. Along with that, he outlined a number of business plans that were very useful for moving forward in our lives.

Having all the words of our teachers in our hearts and eating our fill, we embraced our teachers for the last time. And get their signatures from your teachers. However, this time I feel I’m dying while I was getting the signatures from my teachers. Overall the occasion was memorable and I cannot forget in my life.

On Fake Hannah Arendt Quotations

A quotation attributed to Hannah Arendt has been floating around various social media sites. The apparently altered quotation is:  "This constant lying is not aimed at making the people believe a lie, but at ensuring that no one believes anything anymore. A people that can no longer distinguish between truth and lies cannot distinguish between right and wrong. And such a people, deprived of the power to think and judge, is, without knowing and willing it, completely subjected to the rule of lies. With such a people, you can do whatever you want." -Hannah Arendt   I’ve received numerous emails in the last month asking for the provenance of this quotation. At first, I looked, since to be honest, the spirit of the quote is very much in line with Arendt’s own thought. But as far as I can tell, Hannah Arendt never said this or wrote this. She did, however, say many similar things. Which begs the question: Why would someone create a fake quotation when so many real ones express a similar viewpoint? And, does such an altered quotation matter? To answer this question, it is important to first look at the quotations that likely serve as the source for the fake aphorism.  The closest in spirit and content, and also the most easily available, is from an interview with Roger Errera in 1974, what turned out to be Hannah Arendt’s last public interview. Arendt spoke about the importance of a free press in an era of mass manipulation of truth and public lying: She said:   "The moment we no longer have a free press, anything can happen. What makes it possible for a totalitarian or any other dictatorship to rule is that people are not informed; how can you have an opinion if you are not informed? If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer. This is because lies, by their very nature, have to be changed, and a lying government has constantly to rewrite its own history. On the receiving end you get not only one lie—a lie which you could go on for the rest of your days—but you get a great number of lies, depending on how the political wind blows. And a people that no longer can believe anything cannot make up its mind. It is deprived not only of its capacity to act but also of its capacity to think and to judge. And with such a people you can then do what you please."   The key point in Arendt’s statement is that as lies multiply, the result is not that the lie is believed but that people lose faith in the truth and are increasingly susceptible to believe anything. When cynicism about truth reigns, lies operate not because they replace reality but because they make reality wobble–a phrase Arendt employs in her essay Truth and Politics. In that essay, Arendt argued that mass lying undermines are sense of reality by which we find our bearings in the real world:    The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lie will now be accepted as truth and truth be defamed as a lie, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world—and the category of truth versus falsehood is among the mental means to this end—is being destroyed. The Arendtian point is that constant lying by a propaganda machine does not lead to the lie being believed but leads, instead, to cynicism. This is an argument that Arendt made, already, in her first published book The Origins of Totalitarianism. In that book, Arendt writes:   "Mass propaganda discovered that its audience was ready at all times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not particularly object to being deceived because it held every statement to be a lie anyhow. The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness." So why, given the surfeit of similar quotations, does the anonymous influencer responsible for the viral Arendt quotation change the quotation? On one level, who can know? But there is something to be said for the simplicity of language and clarity of purpose in the fabricated quotation. Arendt herself is profoundly quotable, but her sentences tend to be long and at times follow a meandering course. The impulse to clarify, simplify, and “market” Arendt to a public trained on easy social media quotations is real.  Which raises a second question: does the alteration matter? And here, the answer is yes. And it turns out that this is hardly the first time that Hannah Arendt’s words have been altered and simplified to ease their public consumption. One of the most notorious cases is in the Documentary about ARendt Vita Activa by Ada Ushpiz. Ushpiz uses over 30 block quotations that she projects on the screen in her documentary. Shockingly, nearly every one of these quotations is altered. Some of Ushpiz’s changes were major and deeply deceptive. But many were simply stylistic, as in the fake quotation floating around social media today. In writing about this documentary, I explained why such seemingly innocuous changes matter:  Why does Ushpiz reorder Arendt’s sentences without alerting us to the change? Why does she change “fortuitousness” to “random nature”? And why does she change Arendt’s phrase “totalitarian movements conjure up a lying world of consistency” — one of the most iconic and felicitous of Arendt’s many quotable aphorisms — to read “totalitarian movements conjure up a false ideological and consistent world”?   Ushpiz had an editor go over Arendt’s text to make it read better, to simplify it, to make it more accessible to a film audience. Doing so would be understandable in a fictional film, but it is dishonest in a documentary. Still, we might wish to excuse these changes as minor. Do they change the meaning of what Arendt says? Not materially. And, yet, we should worry about these changes for two reasons. First, the ease and deceptiveness with which Ushpiz has chosen to alter the factual reality of Arendt’s words is a direct refutation of Arendt’s insistence on the need to deal with a complicated and messy reality, whatever it may be. Thinking, for Arendt, is in part the practice of resisting simplification. Ushpiz’s understandable desire to clean up Arendt’s words — the factual reality of what she wrote — violates the very sprit of Hannah Arendt’s work that the film’s subtitle — “The Spirit of Hannah Arendt” — promises to uphold….Arendt’s intense popularity today means that everyone has an interest in claiming an image of Arendt for their cause. Arendt is loved by liberals and equally claimed by conservatives. She is embraced as a democrat but also inspires anarchists. Theorists of identity turn to Arendt’s writings on the dehumanizing dangers of assimilation. Revolutionaries invoke her claim that revolutions are the one path to the foundation of freedom in the modern world. And after decades of being excommunicated from Jewish debates, Arendt is now lauded by Jewish thinkers trying to imagine another path towards peace in the Middle East. That so many opposed interlocutors embrace Arendt is not a mark of her inconsistency, but rather her independence. She is one of the rare free thinkers in the tradition of political thought. She does not think from out of a system, but begins with events like totalitarianism or the rise of the social sciences or the success of the American Revolution, and asks how we are to think about the implications and meanings of these events. Her insights follow from foundational ideas, but they are anything but doctrinaire…. With popularity, however, comes the danger of popularization. Writing about the danger of adapting classic texts for mass culture, Arendt argues it is not a problem to print cheap editions of Shakespeare or Goethe because the words remain the same; the popular editions do “not affect the nature of the objects in question.” But the situation is different when “these objects themselves are changed — rewritten, condensed, digested, reduced to kitsch in reproduction, or in preparation for the movies. This does not mean that culture spreads to the masses, but that culture is being destroyed in order to yield entertainment.” The danger of rewriting cultural texts is that the very texts we hope to disseminate and support are thereby dissipated and destroyed in the process of being consumed. Cultural texts are part of our world; they lend permanence and immortality to our common intellectual tradition. These texts can survive obscurity and even mass dissemination. But when those texts are rewritten for popular consumption, they lose their worldly permanence. Vita Activa is not kitsch. It is hardly consumerist. On the contrary, it is a challenging and thoughtful movie. For most viewers, unaware of the changes and manipulations it brings to Arendt’s words, the movie will likely whet interest in Hannah Arendt and, one hopes, spur them to open some of her books. There is no doubt that the movie does capture much of Hannah Arendt’s passionate love for thinking deeply and provocatively about hard questions. There is much in the movie worth seeing and being moved by. And yet, the easy and at times thoughtless inattention to the factual reality of Arendt’s words risks stripping them of their materiality, their permanence, and their worldliness. Whether it is in the name of public accessibility, or to fit Arendt’s words to one particular understanding, Arendt’s words are simplified and replaced; and new sentences are simply invented. What emerges is not Arendt’s words, but an image of Arendt; it is a serious and well-argued image, but an image nonetheless. It is, of course, inevitable that any essay, fictional film, or documentary offer an image. And there is no one true interpretation of Hannah Arendt. But a documentary — as Vita Activa calls itself — promises that its interpretation is at least based on facts. When a thinker’s words are silently reordered, cut, summarized, or simply made up, it is easy, too easy, to think that the words themselves are optional, that what matters is not the words and sentences Arendt wrote but the personal interpretation of the critic. The result is not that Arendt will necessarily be misunderstood, although she may, but that we come to accept the dangerous fact that misunderstandings are excused, that there is no true understanding and no truly Arendtian version of her texts. The danger in the manipulation of facts is that it blurs the clear boundary separating fact from lie. As Arendt writes, “the result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that lies will now be accepted as truth, and the truth be defamed as lies, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world — and the category of truth vs. falsehood is among the mental means to this end — is being destroyed.” The danger, in other words, is that all truth claims become contested and the result is cynicism, a refusal to believe that there is in truth a stable factual world. And it is cynicism that, by undermining all claims to stable and factual truths, makes possible the coherent fantasies that undergird totalitarian government.

We, the APA Style team, are not robots. We can all pass a CAPTCHA test , and we know our roles in a Turing test . And, like so many nonrobot human beings this year, we’ve spent a fair amount of time reading, learning, and thinking about issues related to large language models, artificial intelligence (AI), AI-generated text, and specifically ChatGPT . We’ve also been gathering opinions and feedback about the use and citation of ChatGPT. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and shared ideas, opinions, research, and feedback.

In this post, I discuss situations where students and researchers use ChatGPT to create text and to facilitate their research, not to write the full text of their paper or manuscript. We know instructors have differing opinions about how or even whether students should use ChatGPT, and we’ll be continuing to collect feedback about instructor and student questions. As always, defer to instructor guidelines when writing student papers. For more about guidelines and policies about student and author use of ChatGPT, see the last section of this post.

Quoting or reproducing the text created by ChatGPT in your paper

If you’ve used ChatGPT or other AI tools in your research, describe how you used the tool in your Method section or in a comparable section of your paper. For literature reviews or other types of essays or response or reaction papers, you might describe how you used the tool in your introduction. In your text, provide the prompt you used and then any portion of the relevant text that was generated in response.

Unfortunately, the results of a ChatGPT “chat” are not retrievable by other readers, and although nonretrievable data or quotations in APA Style papers are usually cited as personal communications , with ChatGPT-generated text there is no person communicating. Quoting ChatGPT’s text from a chat session is therefore more like sharing an algorithm’s output; thus, credit the author of the algorithm with a reference list entry and the corresponding in-text citation.

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

You may also put the full text of long responses from ChatGPT in an appendix of your paper or in online supplemental materials, so readers have access to the exact text that was generated. It is particularly important to document the exact text created because ChatGPT will generate a unique response in each chat session, even if given the same prompt. If you create appendices or supplemental materials, remember that each should be called out at least once in the body of your APA Style paper.

When given a follow-up prompt of “What is a more accurate representation?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that “different brain regions work together to support various cognitive processes” and “the functional specialization of different regions can change in response to experience and environmental factors” (OpenAI, 2023; see Appendix A for the full transcript).

Creating a reference to ChatGPT or other AI models and software

The in-text citations and references above are adapted from the reference template for software in Section 10.10 of the Publication Manual (American Psychological Association, 2020, Chapter 10). Although here we focus on ChatGPT, because these guidelines are based on the software template, they can be adapted to note the use of other large language models (e.g., Bard), algorithms, and similar software.

The reference and in-text citations for ChatGPT are formatted as follows:

  • Parenthetical citation: (OpenAI, 2023)
  • Narrative citation: OpenAI (2023)

Let’s break that reference down and look at the four elements (author, date, title, and source):

Author: The author of the model is OpenAI.

Date: The date is the year of the version you used. Following the template in Section 10.10, you need to include only the year, not the exact date. The version number provides the specific date information a reader might need.

Title: The name of the model is “ChatGPT,” so that serves as the title and is italicized in your reference, as shown in the template. Although OpenAI labels unique iterations (i.e., ChatGPT-3, ChatGPT-4), they are using “ChatGPT” as the general name of the model, with updates identified with version numbers.

The version number is included after the title in parentheses. The format for the version number in ChatGPT references includes the date because that is how OpenAI is labeling the versions. Different large language models or software might use different version numbering; use the version number in the format the author or publisher provides, which may be a numbering system (e.g., Version 2.0) or other methods.

Bracketed text is used in references for additional descriptions when they are needed to help a reader understand what’s being cited. References for a number of common sources, such as journal articles and books, do not include bracketed descriptions, but things outside of the typical peer-reviewed system often do. In the case of a reference for ChatGPT, provide the descriptor “Large language model” in square brackets. OpenAI describes ChatGPT-4 as a “large multimodal model,” so that description may be provided instead if you are using ChatGPT-4. Later versions and software or models from other companies may need different descriptions, based on how the publishers describe the model. The goal of the bracketed text is to briefly describe the kind of model to your reader.

Source: When the publisher name and the author name are the same, do not repeat the publisher name in the source element of the reference, and move directly to the URL. This is the case for ChatGPT. The URL for ChatGPT is https://chat.openai.com/chat . For other models or products for which you may create a reference, use the URL that links as directly as possible to the source (i.e., the page where you can access the model, not the publisher’s homepage).

Other questions about citing ChatGPT

You may have noticed the confidence with which ChatGPT described the ideas of brain lateralization and how the brain operates, without citing any sources. I asked for a list of sources to support those claims and ChatGPT provided five references—four of which I was able to find online. The fifth does not seem to be a real article; the digital object identifier given for that reference belongs to a different article, and I was not able to find any article with the authors, date, title, and source details that ChatGPT provided. Authors using ChatGPT or similar AI tools for research should consider making this scrutiny of the primary sources a standard process. If the sources are real, accurate, and relevant, it may be better to read those original sources to learn from that research and paraphrase or quote from those articles, as applicable, than to use the model’s interpretation of them.

We’ve also received a number of other questions about ChatGPT. Should students be allowed to use it? What guidelines should instructors create for students using AI? Does using AI-generated text constitute plagiarism? Should authors who use ChatGPT credit ChatGPT or OpenAI in their byline? What are the copyright implications ?

On these questions, researchers, editors, instructors, and others are actively debating and creating parameters and guidelines. Many of you have sent us feedback, and we encourage you to continue to do so in the comments below. We will also study the policies and procedures being established by instructors, publishers, and academic institutions, with a goal of creating guidelines that reflect the many real-world applications of AI-generated text.

For questions about manuscript byline credit, plagiarism, and related ChatGPT and AI topics, the APA Style team is seeking the recommendations of APA Journals editors. APA Style guidelines based on those recommendations will be posted on this blog and on the APA Style site later this year.

Update: APA Journals has published policies on the use of generative AI in scholarly materials .

We, the APA Style team humans, appreciate your patience as we navigate these unique challenges and new ways of thinking about how authors, researchers, and students learn, write, and work with new technologies.
