Knowing Our Numbers Class 6 Extra Questions Very Short Answer Type

Question 1. Write the smallest three digit number whose value does not change on reversing its digits. Solution: The required number is 101.

Question 2. Write the greatest three digit number which does not change on reversing its digits. Solution: The required number is 999.

Question 3. What must be added to 203 to get a number whose digits are reversed of the given number? Solution: The number obtained by reversing the digits of 203 = 302. ∴ Difference = 302 – 203 = 99 Hence, the required number is 99.

Question 4. Write the following in Roman numerals: (a) 72 (b) 38 Solution: (a) 72 = LXXII (b) 38 – XXXVIII

Question 5. Write 438 in its expanded form. Solution: 438 = 4 x 100 + 3 x 10 + 8.

Question 6. Write the greatest five-digit number using the digits 4, 2 and 0. Solution: The greatest five-digit number using the digits 4, 2 and 0 is 44420.

Question 7. The capacity of a water tank is 300 litres. Express its capacity in millilitres. Solution: We know that 1 litre = 1000 mL ∴ 300 litres = 300 x 1000 mL = 3,00,000 mL Hence, the capacity of water tank = 3 lakh millilitres.

Question 8. What is the successor of greatest 6-digit number? Solution: Greatest 6-digit number = 999999 Successor of it = 999999 + 1 = 1000000 i. e., smallest 7-digit number. Hence, the required successor = 10,00,000.

Question 9. What is the place value of 7 in 1743? Solution: Let us write 1743 in its expanded form 1743 = 1000 + 700 + 40 +3 Place value of 7 = 700 Hence, the place value of 7 = 700.

A book exhibition was held for 4 days in a school. The number of the tickets sold on the counter on the first, second, third, and the final day was – 1094, 1812, 2050, and 2751. Find the total number of tickets that sold on all four days.

Number of the tickets sold on the first day = 1094

Number of the tickets sold on the second day = 1812

Number of the tickets sold on the third day = 2050

Number of the tickets sold on the final day = 2751

∴Total number of the tickets sold on all of these four days = 1094 + 1812 + 2050 + 2751 = 7,707.

Question 23.

Shekhar is a famous cricket player. He has so far scored a total of 6980 runs in test matches. He wishes to complete 10,000 runs. How many more runs does he need?

Shekhar has so far scored a total of 6980 runs

He wishes to complete a total of 10,000 runs.

Therefore total number of the runs needed by him are = 10,000 – 6980 = 3020 runs

In an election, the successful candidate was registered 5,77,500 votes, and his nearest rival had secured 3,48,700 votes. By what total margin did the successful candidate win the election?

Number of the votes secured by the successful candidate = 5,77,500

Number of the votes secured by his nearest rival = 3,48,700

Therefore, margin of the votes is necessary to win the election = 5,77,500 – 3,48,700 = 2,28,800

Question 32.

Kirti bookstore sold books worth a total of ₹2,85,891 in the 1st week of June and books  worth a total of ₹4,00,768 in the second week of the month. How much was the total sale for the two weeks together? And in which week was the total sale greater and by how much?

Books sold in the first week of the month June are worth ₹2,85,891

Books sold in the second week of the month are worth ₹4,00,768

Therefore, the total sale of the books in the two weeks together is

= ₹2,85,891 + ₹4,00,768 = ₹6,86,659

In the 2nd week of the month, the sale of total books was greater.

Therefore, the difference in the sale of books

= ₹4,00,768 – ₹2,85,891 = ₹1,14,877

So, in the second week of June, the total sale of books was more than ₹1,14,877.

Question 33.

Find the difference below between the highest and the lowest numbers that is written using the digits 6, 2, 7, 4, and 3, each only once.

Given digits = 6, 2, 7, 4, 3

Greatest number is = 76432

Least number is = 23467

Therefore, difference = 76432 – 23467 = 52,965

Question 34.

A machine, on average, manufactures 2,825 screws a day. How many screws did it produce in January 2006?

The number of screws that are manufactured in a day = 2,825.

Number of screws that are manufactured in month of January = 31 x 2825 = 87,575

Question 35.

The total distance between the school and the house of a student is 1 km and 875 m. Every day she walks both the ways. Find the total distance she covered in six days.

Distance between the school and her house = 1 km 875 m = (1000 + 875) m = 1875 metre.

Total Distance travelled by the student from school to home and from home to school is = 2 x 1875 = 3750 m

Distance travelled by the student in six days is = 3750 m x 6 – 22500 m = 22 km 500 m.

Therefore, the total distance covered in 6 days = 22 km 500 m.

Question 36.

A merchant had ₹78,592 with her. She placed an order to purchase 40 radio sets at ₹1200 each. How much total money will remain with her after the purchase?

Amount of money present with the merchant = ₹78,592

Total Number of the radio sets = 40

Price of one of the radio set = ₹1200

Therefore, the cost of 40 radio sets = ₹1200 x 40 = ₹48,000

Remaining money left with the merchant = ₹78,592 – ₹48000 = ₹30,592

Hence, the amount of ₹30,592 will remain with her after purchasing the following radio sets.

Question 37.

A vessel has four litres and 500 ml of curd. How many total glasses, each of 25 mL capacity, can be filled?

Quantity of the curd in a vessel = 4 l 500 mL = (4 x 1000 + 500) mL = 4500 mL.

Capacity of 1 glass = 25 mL

Therefore the number of glasses = 4500/25

Question 38.

A student has multiplied the number 7236 by 65 instead of multiplying by 56. Calculate by how much was his answer greater than the right answer?

The student had multiplied the number 7236 by 65 instead of multiplying by 56.

The difference between the two above multiplications is = (65 – 56) x 7236 = 9 x 7236 = 65124

(We don’t have to do both the multiplication)

Hence, the answer that is greater than the correct answer is 65,124.

Question 39.

Estimate each of the following given numbers using the general rule:

(i) 730 + 998

(ii) 796 – 314

(iii) 12,904 + 2,888

(iv) 28,292 – 21,496

Rounding off 730 nearest to hundreds = 700

Rounding off 998 nearest to hundreds = 1,000

∴ 730 + 998 = 700 + 1000 = 1700

Rounding off 796 nearest to hundreds = 800

Rounding off 314 nearest to hundreds = 300

∴ 796 – 314 = 800 – 300 = 500

Rounding off 12,904 nearest to thousands = 13000

Rounding off 2888 nearest to thousands = 3000

∴ 12,904 + 2,888 = 13000 + 3000 = 16000

Rounding off 28,292 nearest to thousands = 28,000

Rounding off 21,496 nearest to thousands = 21,000

∴ 28,292 – 21,496 = 28,000 – 21,000 = 7,000

A person had only ₹ 1000000 with him. He purchased a coloured-T.V. for ₹ 16580, a motorcycle for ₹ 45890 and a flat for ₹ 870000. How much money was left with him?

The total amount a person had was = ₹ 1000000

The total amount he spent on a colour T.V. was = ₹ 16580

The amount he spent on a motorcycle was = ₹ 45890

The amount he spent on a flat was = ₹ 870000

∴ Total amount he spent is = ₹ (16580 + 45890 + 870000) = ₹ 932470

Thus, the total amount left with him = ₹ 1000000 – ₹ 932470 = ₹ 67530

Question 60.

Out of 180000 tablets of Vitamin A, a total of 18734 are distributed among the students in the district. Find the total number of remaining vitamin tablets.

Total tablets of Vitamin A are = 180000

Total number of tablets distributed among the students in the district = 18734

∴ The number of total remaining vitamin tablets = 180000 – 18734 = 161266

Chinmay only had ₹ 610000. He gave a total of ₹ 87500 to Jyoti, ₹ 126380 to Javed and ₹ 350000 to John. How much money was left with him?

Chinmay had a total amount = of ₹ 610000

The total amount he gave to Jyoti = ₹ 87500

The total amount he gave to Javed = ₹ 126380

The total amount he gave to John = ₹ 350009

Total amount given by Chinmay is = ₹ (87500 + 126380 + 350000) = ₹ 563880

Thus, the amount left with him

= ₹ 610000 – ₹ 563880 = ₹ 46120

Ans: Total number of six-digit numbers can be calculated by subtracting smallest six-digit number from the largest six-digit number and then by adding 1 to the obtained difference.

The smallest $6$ digit number is $100000$

$\therefore $Number of all $6$ digit numbers $=\left( 999999100000 \right)+1$

2. Round off  $14850$ to nearest $10$’s, $100$’s, $1000$’s place.

Ans: Round off  $14850$ to nearest $10$’s, $100$’s, $1000$’s place can be done like this,

Ans: From the given numbers it’s clear that each number differs in their digit count so first count the digits.

$3240973=7$ digits

Now considering this digit counts, write the given numbers in ascending order. From the greatest number to the smallest number.

3. The difference between the two numbers is $3856749$. If the smaller number is $2565638$. Find the greater number.

Ans: we know that difference is obtained by subtracting subtrahend from  minuend.

Minuend $-$ Subtrahend $=$  Difference

Hence, minuend $=$ Difference $+$ Subtrahend

Ans: in the problem it is given that, A thread of length $20m$ has been divided into $5$ pieces.

Total length of the thread $=20m$

Number of thread pieces $=5$

Hence length of each thread piece $\dfrac{20}{5}=4m$

6. A man had Rs. $2,08,78,560$ amounts in his bank. He withdrew Rs. $48,36,980$ in the month of January, Rs. $3,95,648$ in the month of February and Rs. $45,000$ in the month of march. What is the amount remaining in his bank account by the end of march?

Ans: In the problem it is given that,

Then you put these numbers in ascending order by seeing which number is the smallest from the given number and putting it in the first place. 

Here in the given example 5 is the smallest number from all the other numbers. On the other hand, 99 is the most significant number, but it’s in the fourth position, so we put it last. Now we have 22, 48 and 27. We now arrange them by choosing the smallest and the biggest, and that’s how you write the ascending order for the given numbers. The final number line will be 5,22,27,48, and 99.

Descending Order 

The descending order is the total opposite of the ascending order. In this, you need to put the highest number in the first place and the smallest number at the end. The descending order means first comes the biggest, and from there, the numbers will only become small, and the last digit will be the smallest from the whole set of numbers.  

For example, there are 5 numbers present in the box which are 22, 48, 99, 5 and 27. So if a student needs to arrange them, he needs to put the highest number in front and the smallest number at the back or end. So now the number line will look like this. 99, 22, 48, 27 and 5. Just like that, we use the descending order again, and this time we get 99, 48, 27, 22 and 5. This is the descending order of the example.  

Place Value 

A place value defines the positional notation of a digit’s position. This might sound complicated, but it’s nothing to be worried about. Let's clear it by taking an example. Take a big number like 53210. Here let’s try to find out the place value for each single number present.

0 = zero place

1 = one’s place

2 = two’s place

3 = hundered’s place.

4 = thousand’s place

1. A book exhibition was held for four days in a school. The number of tickets sold at the counter on the first, second, third and final day was respectively 1094, 1812, 2050 and 2751. Find the total number of tickets sold on all four days.

Number of tickets sold on 1st day = 1094

Number of tickets sold on 2nd day = 1812

Number of tickets sold on 3rd day = 2050

Number of tickets sold on 4th day = 2751

Hence, the total number of tickets sold on all four days = 1094 + 1812 + 2050 + 2751 = 7707 tickets

2. Shekhar is a famous cricket player. He has so far scored 6980 runs in test matches. He wishes to complete 10,000 runs. How many more runs does he need?

Shekhar scored = 6980 runs

He wants to complete = 10000 runs

Runs needed to score more = 10000 – 6980 = 3020

Hence, he needs 3020 more runs to score

3. In an election, the successful candidate registered 5,77,500 votes, and his nearest rival secured 3,48,700 votes. By what margin did the successful candidate win the election?

No. of votes secured by the successful candidate = 577500

No. of votes secured by his rival = 348700

Margin by which he won the election = 577500 – 348700 = 228800 votes

∴ The successful candidate won the election by 228800 votes

4. Kirti bookstore sold books worth Rs 2,85,891 in the first week of June and books worth Rs 4,00,768 in the second week of the month. How much was the sale for the two weeks together? In which week was the sale greater and by how much?

Price of books sold in the first week of June = Rs 285891

Price of books sold in the second week of June = Rs 400768

No. of books sold in both weeks together = Rs 285891 + Rs 400768 = Rs 686659

The sale of books is the highest in the second week.

Difference in the sale in both weeks = Rs 400768 – Rs 285891 = Rs 114877

∴ Sale in the second week was greater by Rs 114877 than in the first week.

5. Find the difference between the greatest and the least 5-digit number that can be written using the digits 6, 2, 7, 4, and 3 each only once.

Digits given are 6, 2, 7, 4, 3

Greatest 5-digit number = 76432

Least 5-digit number = 23467

Difference between the two numbers = 76432 – 23467 = 52965

∴ The difference between the two numbers is 52965.

6. A machine, on average, manufactures 2,825 screws a day. How many screws did it produce in the month of January 2006?

Number of screws manufactured in a day = 2825

Since January month has 31 days,

The number of screws manufactured in January = 31 × 2825 = 87575

Hence, the machine produced 87575 screws in the month of January 2006.

7. A merchant had Rs 78,592 with her. She placed an order for purchasing 40 radio sets at Rs 1200 each. How much money will remain with her after the purchase?

Total money the merchant had = Rs 78592

The number of radio sets she placed an order for purchasing = 40 radio sets

Cost of each radio set = Rs 1200

So, cost of 40 radio sets = Rs 1200 × 40 = Rs 48000

Money left with the merchant = Rs 78592 – Rs 48000 = Rs 30592

Hence, money left with the merchant after purchasing radio sets is Rs 30592.

8. A student multiplied 7236 by 65 instead of multiplying by 56. By how much was his answer greater than the correct answer?

Difference between 65 and 56, i.e. (65 – 56) = 9

The difference between the correct and incorrect answer = 7236 × 9 = 65124

Hence, by 65124, the answer was greater than the correct answer.

9. To stitch a shirt, 2 m 15 cm cloth is needed. Out of 40 m cloth, how many shirts can be stitched and how much cloth will remain?

The total length of the cloth = 40 m

= 40 × 100 cm = 4000 cm

Cloth required to stitch one shirt = 2 m 15 cm

= 2 × 100 + 15 cm = 215 cm

Number of shirts that can be stitched out of 4000 cm = 4000/215 = 18 shirts

Hence, 18 shirts can be stitched out of 40 m, and 1 m 30 cm of cloth is left.

10. Medicine is packed in boxes, each weighing 4 kg 500g. How many such boxes can be loaded in a van which cannot carry beyond 800 kg?

Weight of one box = 4 kg 500 g = 4 × 1000 + 500

Maximum weight carried by the van = 800 kg = 800 × 1000

Hence, the number of boxes that can be loaded in the van = 800000/4500 = 177 boxes

11. The distance between the school and a student’s house is 1 km 875 m. Every day, she walks both ways. Find the total distance covered by her in six days.

Distance covered between the school and her house = 1 km 875 m = 1000 + 875 = 1875 m

Since the student walks both ways,

The distance travelled by the student in one day = 2 × 1875 = 3750 m

Distance travelled by the student in 6 days = 3750 m × 6 = 22500 m = 22 km 500 m

∴ The total distance covered by the student in six days is 22 km and 500 m.

12. A vessel has 4 litres and 500 ml of curd. In how many glasses, each of 25 ml capacity, can it be filled?

Quantity of curd in the vessel = 4 l 500 ml = 4 × 1000 + 500 = 4500 ml

Capacity of 1 glass = 25 ml

∴ Number of glasses that can be filled with curd = 4500 / 25 = 180 glasses

Hence, 180 glasses can be filled with curd.

Make ten more such examples of addition, subtraction and estimation of their outcome.

730 rounds off to 700

998 rounds off to 1000

Hence, 730 + 998 = 700 + 1000 = 1700

(b) 796 – 314

796 rounds off to 800

314 rounds off to 300

Hence, 796 – 314 = 800 – 300 = 500

(c) 12904 + 2888

Round off to thousands

12904 rounds off to 13000

2888 rounds off to 3000

Hence, 12904 + 2888 = 13000 + 3000 = 16000

6. Find the difference between the greatest and smallest 4 digit number that can be written using the digits 6, 2, 7, 3 each only once.

10. Find the difference between the place value and face value of 8 in 7894.

1. 70,002,509. Number name: Seventy million two thousand five hundred nine.

2. Smallest number is 10423 and greatest number is 98476.

3. Smallest 3 digit number is 100 and greatest 4 digit number is 9999. Product = 9999 x 100 = 999900.

4. i) 423 rounds off to 420. 789 rounds off to 790. Estimated sum = 420 + 790 = 1210. ii) 852 rounds off to 900. 689 rounds off to 700. Estimated difference = 900 – 700 = 200.

5. i) 9,08,00,500 ii) 7,633,415.

6. Greatest 4 digit number is 9999 and smallest 4 digit number is 1000. Difference = 9999 – 1000 = 8999.

7. 10 hundred thousand makes one million.

8. i) 94 = XCIV ii) 198 = CXCVIII.

9. i) 98 ii) 43

10. Place value of 8 in 7894 is 800 and face value of 8 is 8 itself. Difference = 800 – 8 = 792.

Kirti bookstore sold books worth Rs 2,85,891 in the first week of June and books worth Rs 4,00,768 in the second week of the month. How much was the sale for the two weeks together? In which week was the sale greater and by how much?

Value of Books sold in 1 st week = Rs 2,85,891

Value of books sold in 2 nd week = Rs 4,00,768

Total sale = Sale in 1 st week + Sale in 2 nd week

= 2,85,891 + 4,00,768

A merchant had Rs 78,592 with her. She placed an order for purchasing 40 radio sets at Rs 1200 each. How much money will remain with her after the purchase?

Cost of one radio set = Rs 1200

Cost of 40 radio sets = 1200 × 40 = Rs 48000

Money with Merchant = Rs 78,592

Money spent = Rs 48,000

Money left = 78592 − 48000

Therefore, Rs 30,592 will remain with her after the purchase.

Question 8:

A student multiplied 7236 by 65 instead of multiplying by 56. By how much was his answer greater than the correct answer? (Hint: Do you need to do both the multiplications?)

Difference between 65 and 56 = 9

Difference in the answer = 7236 × 9

Therefore, his answer was greater than the correct answer by 65,124.

Question 9:

To stitch a shirt, 2m 15 cm cloth is needed. Out of 40 m cloth, how many shirts can be stitched and how much cloth will remain? (Hint: convert data in cm.)

2 m 15 cm = 215 cm (1 m = 100 cm)

40 m = 40 × 100

Cloth required for one shirt = 215 cm

Number of shirts that can be stitched out of 4000 cm = 4000 ÷ 215

Therefore, 18 shirts can be made. 130 cm, i.e. 1 m 30 cm, cloth will remain.

Question 10:

Medicine is packed in boxes, each weighing 4 kg 500 g. How many such boxes can be loaded in a van which cannot carry beyond 800 kg?

1 kg = 1000 g

4 kg 500 g = 4500 g

800 kg = 800 × 1000 = 800000 g

Number of boxes that can be loaded in the van = 800000 ÷ 4500

Hence, 177 boxes at maximum can be loaded in the van.
