Dementia is a key theme of research at King’s including the entire disease course for adults needing support encompassing specialities of dementia care, social care and palliative care from across our health and care faculties in Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care, Social Science and Public Policy, and Institute of Psychology, Psychiatry and Neurosciences. Ageing Research at King’s (ARK) is an active multi-disciplinary group facilitating successful collaborations across faculties and specialties.

The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC) is based in the heart of central and south London. It includes the Cicely Saunders Institute for Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation , the premier Institute for Palliative Care, bringing together clinical, research and education teams.

Our applied clinical and health multidisciplinary research transforms therapies, the healthcare experience and outcomes for patients and those important to them, wherever they are cared for. Our award-winning research capacity building programmes targets pre- and post-doctoral, and early and mid career researchers to pursue rewarding careers. Public engagement  and involvement is central to our research, supported by King’s Engaged Research Network , and NIHR Applied Research Collaborative South London .

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated talented individual as a Research Assistant for the national Dementia Network EMPOWER - Empowering a Meaningful Life for All. The Network brings together strengths in dementia care, social care, primary care and palliative care, with lived experts and communities to realise sustained change to support and empower equalities in care for people living and dying with dementia, and their families. The network is funded the UKRI Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

This is opportunity to join our team in the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care and work within a multidisciplinary team across health and social care faculties at King’s College London and with our university and community partners, and lived experts by experience. The Network is led by Professor Catherine Evans, King’s College London with co-lead Dr Emma Wolverson, University of Hull.

The Network aims to identify, promote and sustain high-quality care for people with dementia and complex needs, and their families, for them to live as well as possible throughout the disease trajectory, including into end of life and bereavement.

You will support the co-creation of the Network with our partners and lived experts to build a springboard for high-quality dementia care for all needing support, harnessing inclusive approaches for meaningful engagement and collaboration, technologies to innovate care, and enthuse and foster talented researchers, practitioners and community partners. You will contribute to shaping and maintaining the EMPOWER online central Hub to share and disseminate resources, and maximise the national and international reach and impact of the Network activities, collaborations, and social media presence.  You will work closely with the Community Partners and Lived Experts to enable meaningful involvement and engagement, for them to drive priorities in the Network. You will support development and delivery of the public engagement workshops, Policy Lab and ‘sand-pit’ events for small research project funding to innovate dementia care and engage the public and policy makers to realise and sustain change.

This is a full time role (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 31st March 2028.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

• A degree in health or social sciences or similar awarded to a high level (e.g. first or 2.1).
• Experience of involvement of lived experts by experience in research and/or community partners 
• Experience of using social media and/or online platforms to engage and promote research activities 
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team 
• Strong organisational and planning skills with proven ability to coordinate and deliver projects. 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to adapt communication to the situation. 
• Excellent time management skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritise, and complete work within deadlines

Desirable criteria

• A postgraduate qualification in health or social sciences or similar e.g. MSc or PhD 
• Research or clinical experience in dementia care 
• Experience of coordinating a network for research or public engagement or programme of work 
• Publications, including blogs, reports, web content

Research Assistant in the Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

The post-holder will be based in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London, joining Europe’s largest grouping of youth-focused mental health scientists, clinical academics and researchers at the newly established Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People.

About the role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated pre-doctoral Research Assistant to work on the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded ‘Personalised Programmes for Children Study’ (PPC study), based at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, KCL, in partnership with the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Reading.  

The PPC study  The RCT is evaluating a new personalised family intervention programme (Personalised Programme for Children and Parents: PPCP) in comparison to a new parent-directed, clinician supported online education and support programme (Parent Led Education and Support-PLES, using the Parenting Matters course,  www.parentingmatters.co.uk ) for young children (4-9) with persistent conduct problems. Both programmes will be delivered as part of CAMHS services. The goal of the RCT is to consider whether a personalised, individual family approach is superior to a less intensive intervention when child conduct problems have not responded to parent group programmes, or parents have not engaged in these programmes, for whatever reason. 

Children with conduct problems are a poorly served group who do particularly badly in terms of current functioning and longer-term outlook for mental health and well-being. one third fail to make minimally useful treatment gains when offered the best of current treatment, so are at particularly high risk of continuing problems and a poor long-term prognosis. There is therefore a pressing need to develop a new intervention for children with persisting conduct problems as currently, there is nothing available.

The successful applicants will be part of a large interdisciplinary team including Professor Stephen Scott, Dr Daniel Michelson (IOPPN,) Dr Rob Senior & Dr Eilis Kennedy (the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust), and Professor Jonathan Hill (University of Reading).

The postholder will be responsible for recruiting families to the study; supporting families in completing baseline and follow up questionnaires; completing interviews and assessments with parents and children; entering data into study databases, liaising with the CTU to randomise participants, and contributing to the analysis and dissemination of the findings.

The role requires sensitive and supportive work with multi-stressed families from diverse backgrounds, to engage families and encourage them to continue in the study. Personal skills of warmth, humour, patience, respect and a collaborative approach will be key.

Some qualitative research interviews will be carried out in addition to administering quantitative measures.

This post will be offered on a full-time, fixed term contract until 31st December 2024.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

• Undergraduate (2:1 minimum) degree in psychology, or other immediately relevant subject.
• Research experience (beyond undergraduate project), including experience of conducting assessments and setting up and managing data bases
• Evidence of research-related computing skills: word processing, Excel and Endnote, packages to support data analysis.
• Experience in quantitative research methodology
• Experience of working in teams with evidence of ability to work collaboratively with others and independently as needed

Research Assistant in Cognitive Neuroscience - King's College London

The salary will be paid at Grade 5, £31,883 - £36,422 per annum,  inclusive  of £3,223 per annum London Allowance.

This post will be fixed term for 3 years.

This is a full-time - 100% full time equivalent

We are looking for a motivated individual to join our multi-disciplinary team in developing and testing a new battery of behavioural, eye-tracking, EEG and fMRI tasks for people with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders. These tasks will be used in several linked clinical research studies as part of an EU funded IMI AIMS-2-TRIALS Project This project brings together centres across the EU, North America, and South Africa. The post will provide a variety of clinical and cognitive neuroscience research experiences. 

Working under the direction of Dr Eva Loth, the project requires a research assistant with  good time management, communication, problem solving and data handling skills. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive support in the recruitment and screening of children, adolescents and adults with autism, typical development and other neurodevelopmental conditions.  A relevant undergraduate degree in Psychology or a related area is essential though a Master’s degree would be desirable.

Daniel de kadt, assistant professor of quantitative research methods at the london school of economics.

Daniel de Kadt is Assistant Professor of Quantitative Research Methods at the London School of Economics (LSE). Before joining LSE he was a Senior Data Scientist at Deliveroo, and Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of California Merced.

He grew up in Durban, South Africa, and received his BA(Hons) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, before receiving his MPhil at Oxford University, and his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on decision making, democracy, and South Africa and has been published in the American Political Science Review , Nature , and the Journal of Politics . His work has also been featured in Foreign Affairs and The Washington Post .

Jennifer Piscopo, Associate Professor of Politics at Occidental College

Jennifer Piscopo is Associate Professor of Politics at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. Her research on gender, political representation, and political leadership has appeared in over thirty peer-reviewed journals and numerous edited volumes. She consults regularly for international organizations such as UN Women.

Her public-facing writing on women and political empowerment has appeared in outlets such as The New York Times , The Washington Post , The Los Angeles Times , The Boston Review , Ms. Magazine , and The Smithsonian . She has received research awards from the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, the American Political Science Association, the Midwest Political Science Association, the International Political Science Association, and the Latin American Studies Association.

Milan Vaishnav, Director of the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Milan Vaishnav is a senior fellow and director of the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. His primary research focus is the political economy of India, and he examines issues such as corruption and governance, state capacity, distributive politics, and electoral behavior. He is also the host of “Grand Tamasha,” a weekly podcast on Indian politics and policy co-produced by Carnegie and the Hindustan Times.

His work has been published in scholarly journals such as Asian Survey , Governance , India Review , India Policy Forum , Journal of Democracy , Studies in Indian Politics , Perspectives on Politics , and PS: Political Science and Politics . He is an adjunct professor in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and has previously taught at Columbia and George Washington Universities. He holds a PhD in political science from Columbia University.

Soledad artiz prillaman, faculty affiliate at the king center on global development.

Soledad Artiz Prillaman is an assistant professor of political science at Stanford University and a Faculty Affiliate of the King Center on Global Development. She is the faculty director of the Inclusive Democracy and Development Lab , funded by the King Center.

Her research investigates the political consequences of development; the political behavior and representation of minorities, specifically women; inequalities in political engagement; and the translation of voter demands. In her recent, award-winning book, she evaluates women’s political behavior in rural India and how and when democracies fail to represent women. Her work has been published in the American Journal of Political Science , the Journal of Politics , and by Cambridge University Press.

Our Psychology BSc will introduce you to the psychological sciences and help you to explore their application to a variety of contemporary challenges. The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), who have highlighted areas of particular strength in our course, including the emphasis on research-led teaching, our modules for developing employability skills, and the wide range of discipline-specific opportunities, placements and internships that are available for students at the world-leading Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). The BSc degree is available as a 3-year option or a 4-year option (with placement year or study-abroad year). The admissions criteria are identical for the 3-year and 4-year BSc programmes.
