My Favorite Stories about My Grandmother

my Grandmother Special to Me edumantra.net

My grandmother is a treasure trove of stories. I could sit and listen to her tales for hours on end, never growing tired of them. But there are some stories that hold a special place in my heart. One of my favorite stories is about when she was just a girl living on the farm with her family. One night, while everyone was asleep, they were awakened by the sound of their cow mooing loudly outside. My grandmother’s father went out to investigate and found that the cow had fallen into a ditch and couldn’t get out. With quick thinking, he tied one end of a rope around his waist and the other end around the cow’s neck and pulled it out. Another story that always makes me smile is about how my grandmother met my grandfather. She was working as a waitress at a diner when he walked in for breakfast one morning. They struck up a conversation, and before long they were inseparable. But perhaps my all-time favorite story is one she tells about taking care of me when I was just an infant. Apparently, I would cry incessantly unless she bounced me gently on her knee while singing “You Are My Sunshine.” To this day, whenever I hear that song, it brings back fond memories of being held by my beloved grandma. These stories may not seem like much to some people, but to me they are precious gems that I will cherish forever.

My grandmother may not be a supermodel, but she is beautiful in her own unique way. Her face is weathered by years of hard work and life experience, but it still shines with kindness and love. She has soft wrinkles around her eyes that crinkle up when she smiles, making me feel comforted and loved. Her hair used to be dark brown when she was younger, but now it’s mostly gray with hints of silver. I often see her sitting outside in the sun, brushing out her long locks as they catch the light – always well-groomed even at 80 years old. She may not dress in the latest fashion trends or wear makeup every day, yet there’s something about her style that exudes classiness and confidence. Her favorite outfit is a simple cotton saree paired with comfortable sandals- each one chosen for its practicality rather than its style statement. Even though my grandmother isn’t physically tall nor athletic like some people I know, every time I am around here there’s an aura of strength emanating from within which makes me feel secure.

Our Relationship

My relationship with my grandmother is one of the most important connections in my life. She has always been someone I could turn to for guidance, love and support. From a young age, I can remember feeling completely at ease around her. As we grew older, our relationship only became stronger. We developed an unspoken bond that was built on mutual respect and understanding. Whether we were spending time together or simply chatting on the phone, there was always a sense of comfort and familiarity between us. What makes our relationship particularly special is the fact that it’s not just limited to family ties – she truly feels like a friend to me as well. Whenever we’re together, it never feels forced or awkward; rather, it’s easy-going and natural. I think what really helps strengthen our connection is how much we have in common. We both have a deep appreciation for nature and enjoy being outside whenever possible. We also share similar values when it comes to family and putting others before ourselves. All in all, our relationship is something that I treasure deeply. My grandmother has been an unwavering source of love throughout my life, and I am so grateful for everything she has done for me over the years.

Why I Admire My Grandmother

My admiration for my grandmother stems from her unwavering strength and resilience. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout her life, she has always remained steadfast in her values and beliefs. Growing up during a time when women were often relegated to traditional roles, my grandmother defied societal norms by pursuing higher education and becoming a teacher. Her determination to carve out her own path is something that I deeply respect. Furthermore, my grandmother’s kind heart and selflessness have always been evident in the way that she treats others. Whether it’s through lending an ear or providing a helping hand, she always puts the needs of others before herself. Her ability to find joy in even the simplest of things is another quality that I admire about her. From spending hours tending to her garden to enjoying a simple cup of tea with loved ones, she truly embodies the concept of finding happiness in everyday moments. My admiration for my grandmother runs deep and I feel incredibly fortunate to have such an inspiring role model in my life.

My grandmother has been and will always be an important figure in my life. Her kindness, wisdom, and love have helped shape me into the person I am today. Through her stories and experiences, she has taught me valuable lessons that I will carry with me throughout my life. Her physical appearance may have changed over time, but her inner beauty remains constant. She is a shining example of strength and resilience. Despite facing many challenges in her life, she always remained positive and hopeful. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a wonderful grandmother who has played such a significant role in my life. Her unwavering support and encouragement have inspired me to pursue my dreams fearlessly. Describing my grandmother is not just about listing off facts or characteristics; it’s about honoring the impact she has made on my life. Without a doubt, she is truly one of the most influential people I’ve ever known – someone who continues to inspire me every day with her grace and generosity of spirit.

Essay on grandmother

Essay on Grandmother: ‘Have you ever wondered what the circumstances surrounding your family may have been in the absence of an elderly figure? How would your parents have asked for advice when making certain decisions? When your parents scolded you, who would have pampered you? We as children are closer to our grandparents, especially our grandmother than any member of our family. Grandmother teaches us how to love, respect, care, and become responsible in life. God has blessed us with grandmothers because of their caring love and respectful attitude towards everyone.’

‘Grandmother wakes up early in the morning and takes care of family stuff. She manages all the house choirs and prepares breakfast for everyone. In her free time, she sits on her rocking chair on the balcony and murmurs songs. Everyone in the family respects her and reaches out to her for her guidance.’

‘This loving member of our family is getting old and she deserves the best care. Grandmother endured all the family’s sufferings and made sacrifices for everyone. They never discriminate against their grandchildren and have equal love for everyone, They are always there for us, guiding us through here decades of experience and teaching us the realities of life.’

We often get to hear that grandmothers are emotionally closer to their grandchildren than their parents. This is because we as children spend more time with them and they have a golden heart. Consider this example: our parents often say ‘no’ to things we like or want, but our grandmother always considers our interests and tries their best to keep us happy. They don’t want to see us sitting sad in a corner and feeling neglected.’

How To Write An Essay On My Grandmother For Classes 1, 2 and 3

Shaili Contractor

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on ‘My Grandmother’

10-sentence essay on ‘my grandmother’, short essay on ‘my grandmother’ for children, long paragraph on ‘my grandmother’ for kids, what your 1st, 2nd or 3rd grader will learn from the essay.

There is something strikingly comforting about the word grandmother for all of us; that caring and nurturing woman in our lives because of whom we had a wonderful childhood. Most children have the privilege of knowing their grandparents. While some kids are raised in joint families, some only see them during holidays. But in both cases, they are bound to have a special bond with their grandmothers. Expressing this bond in an essay on ‘My Grandmother’ is thus likely to be an easy and joyous experience for some kids, but some might need guidance. In this article, we will help your child with some helpful ideas and tips to write short and long essays on the topic. Let’s begin with the key points!

Most schools are likely to ask their first, second, and third graders to write an essay on ‘My Grandmother’. Check out these pointers on how to approach the topic:

  • For short, one-line essays on ‘My Grandmother’, write one-line facts about your grandmother, her role in the family, and the bond you share with her.
  • When writing short paragraph essays, talk about why your grandmother is special and all the fun activities you engage with her.
  • For longer essays on your grandmother, you can add more details about her life, such as her past in the family and some of her qualities. Continue with how she is important to your family and end with how she is a role model for everyone.

It is always a fun activity for first and second graders to write about their grandmothers, but writing an essay needs them to organise their thoughts before penning them down. Here are a few ideas to write a short 10-line essay on the topic:

  • My grandmother is the sweetest, most caring person in the world.
  • She has taken care of all of us since we were babies.
  • My grandmother knows all of my favourite food, favourite toys, and TV shows.
  • She is also an amazing cook. She prepares delicious meals every day.
  • Granny is seventy-five years old and has beautiful white hair.
  • My grandmother is the head of our family, and everybody listens to her because she has a lot of wisdom.
  • She loves watching TV and play with me during the evenings. We also go for walks every day in the neighbourhood.
  • Granny is a strong but kindhearted woman who wishes good things for everyone.
  • She takes care of me when I’m unwell, and knows all the right foods to make me feel better and strong.
  • My grandmother is also my best friend. I love her very much.

Kids can never run out of things to say about their grandmother. Here is a short essay to learn how to put your ideas together:

My grandmother is seventy years old. She is a very kind woman who has raised all of us since we were babies. My grandmother is the head of the house, and everybody respects her. She is the first person to wake me up every morning, and every night she tucks me in bed and reads me a bedtime story. My grandmother assisted me to grow into a caring, smart, and friendly person and that has really helped me to be the person that I am today. Many people have a pleasant relationship with their parents. However, I am a special case because the one person I have always had a pleasant relationship with is my dear grandmother. She is a wonderful woman and one unique trait about her is that she has never lost her sense of humor. She laughs all the jokes I make and that draws me close to her even more. She has always been the person to trust and I never keep any secrets from her. Because of her positive personality, my home is peaceful and rich of laughter. My grandmother is truly an amazing woman .This paper thrives to describe my grandmother and the things she has done in my life that makes me admire her.

My granny is a special person because she is kind to every person she meets. She raised her children and taught them to be kind, honest, brave, and pleasant people. Anybody who happens to know my granny knows that she is truly friendly and fun to talk to. One thing about her that I make fun of her the most is, she is short in height such that whenever I stand close to her I would actually have to look down. She is a beautiful woman and her smile can brighten the entire room and she has a self assured posture even though she is short. She is caring and forgiving because I once broke her favorite vessel and instead of her getting furious with me she forgave and advised me to be always careful. Another unique thing about her is that she is very patient with people and she is not even tampered. She is someone who is always free to listen like she has this gift of talking less but listening much. She doesn’t jump to accusations without proof and she doesn’t count on speculations but facts; what a granny.

My grandmother is an outgoing person, compassionate, and brilliant person who had no self image. My granny can well be a perfect example of a counselor because she is always advising people me included. She has always shown and advised me to do things in the right way. She has frequently insisted people ought to be discipline; doing what is right, what is just, and what is fair. I personally am a believer and a strong religious person because my grandmother too is a religious person and she always insisted that humanity would not exist on earth without the grace of God. Whenever I had a problem with friends in school or relationship issues, she is always there to support and hold my hands. She could play some music when am doing homework and still I could the hear tune of the music she played and all I remember are those wonderful moments of my granny.

In conclusion, everybody has one influential person in one’s lives and personally, my grandmother is the most influential person in my life whom I admire. I am fortunate because the one person I have always had a pleasant relationship with is my dear grandmother. Because of her I am the person I am today and I thank God for giving me such a big blessing in my life. My granny has always been a jewel that I will always treasure and praise for the rest of my life.

Short Paragraph on My Grandmother (489 Words)

describing my grandmother essay

Here is your short paragraph on my grandmother:

Each one of us has one most important person in our life. For me my Grandmother is the most important and the most influential person in my life. She is traditional, sensible, kind, a good cook, religious and lovable.

She has taken care for me since I was a newly born child. She has brought me up very well. She passed away last year on 1 st Dec 2012.

But she will always be alive deep inside my heart because she has taught me so many good things in life. She has changed my world by making me a good human being.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Two months ago I have completed my Chemical Engineering with top grades and today I am placed in a well renowned multinational company. I gave the credit of my success to my grandmother because when I was a kid my mom and dad both were busy in their respective jobs and she took pains to make me study well to get good grades.

She took care for me at home and makes me eat healthy food so that I can stay healthy and attend my school regularly. Whenever I was filled with negative thoughts about my parents that they do not care for me like other parents do, she made me understand that they love me but fail to devote ample time due to their jobs.

When I came home coming fighting with my best buddy she took efforts to make me to patch it up. When I was bored she played with me like a child. I have discussed all my problems with her and she has always given solutions to all my problems.

I really miss her a lot. She was a very good cook. She used to make my favorite dessert “Merry go land” for me on every Sundays and even sometimes when I request her or on some special occasions. She has always helped me in teaching economics as she was a gold medalist in economics. Economics was the only subject which I hated a lot in my childhood days. But she always made it easier for me.

She made me confident to face life failures with grace. She always taught me to believe in myself no matter what happens. She taught me to be brave. If she would have not been in my life to teach me the right patch life would have been completely different and I would have been completely a different boy.

May be I might have not achieved so much success in life as I have achieved today. She was more than a best friend to me. I have learned a lot in life through her eyes through her experiences, success and failures. She has taught me the value for money and value of true relationships. She taught me to also face failures with held high like I celebrate my success.

Most of us are blessed with a grandmother. However, some of us are lucky enough to spend more time with them than others. Grandmothers are a hidden blessing as they pour our love on us and lead us in the right direction. In this article, we will talk about grandmothers; we will look at how strong they are.

A grandmother is Hidden Angel

The sweet grandmothers are hidden angels for all the grandchildren. They went through all the pain and tried to do all the work for their grandchildren. They have gold hearts because they treat all of their grandchildren equally.

Despite the challenges, they are always there to support us. Most of the time, our parents do not signal to say no but to our grandmothers who try to do that which is not yes. This is their greatness and their love for us.

A grandmother is always kind to us. She always loves us much more than their children. Grandmothers are our childhood besties with whom we share all the secrets. Both grandmothers give equal love, whether she is our father’s mother or our mother’s mother. It is because of them that we eat such delicious food. Nothing can compare to the taste of grandma’s food. Usually, they do not tell us about their problems but always have a happy face to be happy. Although our grandmothers endured a lot, they never let that come to light. No matter what, they are always there to defend us.

The beautiful Example about Grandmother

My grandmother is an excellent example of who I want to be. She is over five feet [5 m] tall and very kind by heart. Her warm demeanor helps us to win the heart of anyone she meets. As a child, I used to hold her delicate, soft hands.

She has stories, many of them. She has faced different times, worlds, and difficulties, but she is still as strong as ever despite all these. Even though she has grown up without me, she always keeps up with me so that he doesn’t lose anything.

I love watching her taste her food, and I love it. She is usually the first one at the dinner table but always the last one to leave. She makes sure no one eats alone, so she stays until the end. A patient lady is my grandmother.

I enjoy spending my afternoon with her, sitting by the window and relaxing. She drinks a little tea while I listen to the stories she tells me—all the exciting stories about her childhood and her siblings.

The Death of My Grandmother and Lessons Learnt Essay

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

Introduction

For many people, the death of their grandparents means the loss of a very close relative, who was given an important role in their lives. After the death of a grandmother, a person can experience many different emotions. The loss of a dear person is frightening and unsettling. Often the loss of a grandmother is the first loss in life, which only complicates the feelings experienced. Death is a natural part of life that we have to deal with sooner or later. The loss of my grandmother was the biggest tragedy that has happened to me. The main reason is the fact that she was the one who raised me to become who I am. She was closer to me than my parents because they were mostly busy at their jobs. My grandmother always accompanied me throughout my childhood.

Nonetheless, the given obstacle was a mere setback for my future success. At first, I was inclined to be pessimistic and depressed due to the fact that I did not see myself enjoying life anymore. As time passed, I began to realize that I am the only one who can and will carry on her legacy and memory because she raised me by pouring her soul into me. In addition, I started to appreciate life more because I faced the concept of death early on.

I learned many valuable things after my grandmother passed away. The best way to feel better after the death of a loved one is to indulge in pleasant memories. I tried to remember the moments when we laughed together, had fun, or other pleasant situations that we experienced with my grandmother. Also, over time, I could revise our box or album of memory, so as not to forget about all the moments experienced. I realized that if you focus on helping others, it will be easier for you to survive the loss and move on. It is also critical to support the parents and brothers during difficult moments. Some of your parents have lost their mother, and this is a terrible obstacle. I learned to recall that I love my loved ones and try to take care of them even in small endeavors, such as offering to make tea or washing the dishes. It is important to experience the joy that my grandmother lives in my memory.

Furthermore, I learned that there are several stages that each person experiencing loss goes through shock, anger, despair, and acceptance. As a rule, these stages take a year, and it is no accident that in the old traditions, the mourning for the deceased lasted as long. These experiences are individual and depend on the degree of closeness with the deceased person, on the circumstances in which he passed away. At each stage, there may be experiences that seem abnormal to people. For example, they hear the voice of a deceased person or feel his presence. They may remember the departed, dream about him, may even be angry with the deceased, or, conversely, not experience any emotion. These conditions are natural and are due to the functioning of the brain. However, it is important to know that pathological reactions to stress can occur at each stage.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the loss of my grandmother was a major challenge that I faced in my entire life. Although it dealt irreparable damage, I am convinced that it made me much stronger as a human being both emotionally and mentally. I acquired a certain degree of peace and calmness during stressful periods because none of them can be as painful as the loss of my grandmother. In addition, I became more aware of the concept of death, which forced me to fully appreciate my time and life.

The Birth of Maya Angelou: a Glimpse into her Early Life

This essay about Maya Angelou’s birth on April 4, 1928, explores the early influences that shaped her remarkable life and work. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Angelou’s childhood was marked by challenges and relocations, reflecting the broader social and economic struggles of the early 20th century. Despite these difficulties, her experiences in the segregated South and her later works are deeply interconnected. The essay highlights how Angelou’s birth date provides insight into the historical and cultural context that influenced her literary voice and contributions to literature and civil rights.

How it works

Maya Angelou, a name that evokes images of profound poetry, stirring autobiographies, and a voice that echoed wisdom and resilience, was born on April 4, 1928. Her birth in St. Louis, Missouri, marked the beginning of a life that would become a beacon of hope and inspiration for countless people around the world.

In the tumultuous landscape of the early 20th century, Angelou’s arrival was a quiet event, overshadowed by the era’s broader struggles. Born Marguerite Ann Johnson, her early years were defined by both hardship and strength.

The 1920s were a period of significant social and economic change in the United States, and the impact of the Great Depression was keenly felt across the nation. Yet, even amidst these challenges, Angelou’s life began to take shape in a way that would later become the foundation for her remarkable achievements.

Growing up in the segregated South, Angelou faced a world filled with prejudice and adversity. Her childhood was marked by frequent relocations between her grandmother’s home in Stamps, Arkansas, and her mother’s residence in San Francisco. These experiences, though difficult, would later inform much of her writing, providing a wellspring of material that would resonate deeply with readers. Angelou’s early life was not without its trials, including personal trauma and periods of silence, but these experiences forged her character and shaped her literary voice.

The significance of Angelou’s birthdate extends beyond mere historical interest. April 4, 1928, is a day that falls into a specific cultural and historical context, and understanding this timeframe offers insight into the world that influenced Angelou’s formative years. This period was not just a backdrop for her early life but also a crucible where her identity and resilience were forged. The 1920s were a time of cultural renaissance and upheaval, which would later find reflection in Angelou’s work. Her profound ability to articulate the struggles and triumphs of her era can be traced back to these early influences.

Angelou’s writing is a testament to her journey from these early beginnings. Her acclaimed series of autobiographies, beginning with “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” reflect the complex tapestry of her life experiences. Her ability to weave narrative with raw emotion and lyrical beauty can be linked directly to the hardships and victories of her early years. Born into a world of deep-seated racial and social challenges, Angelou’s work offers a powerful narrative of overcoming adversity and finding one’s voice.

The date of Maya Angelou’s birth, April 4, 1928, thus holds more than just biographical significance. It marks the inception of a life that would touch the hearts of many and leave an indelible mark on the world of literature and civil rights. Her early experiences shaped her into a towering figure of strength and eloquence, and her legacy continues to inspire new generations. By reflecting on her birthdate and the era in which she was born, one gains a deeper appreciation of the forces that shaped her and the contributions she made to literature and society.

In remembering Maya Angelou, it is essential to recognize not only the milestones of her achievements but also the historical context from which she emerged. Her birth was the beginning of a journey that would transcend the confines of her early struggles and redefine what it means to rise above and inspire others through the power of words.

My family always felt different. My grandparents raised me and were older than my friends' parents.

  • My grandparents raised me and my brother, and they were older than my friends' parents.
  • They were more strict than other parents, but there were also benefits to their age.
  • They also became loving and affectionate great grandparents to my kids.

Insider Today

I can't remember the first time I realized how different my family was from my friends' families, but the feeling followed me right into college and my adult life afterward. My parents both had drug addictions and split up by the time I was 10 months old. My father got remarried and disappeared from my life, and my mother retreated to what seemed like the other side of the world, Southern California. She died of a drug overdose when I was 7.

In my parent's absence, my grandparents raised me and my brother . We also had an extended family helping out and a foster mother, Esther, who started taking us during the week when my grandmother went to work. Soon, we stayed with Est and her three biological children on weekends and for certain holidays.

I always felt like my family was different

We lived in a city just outside Boston and were not what the 1980s nuclear family we were surrounded by looked like. I wanted so desperately to be normal. On the sitcoms I grew up with, kids went to their moms and dads to help solve whatever problems they had. Then, 30 minutes later — 22, if you don't count commercials — the issue was fixed.

Most of my friends had a mother and a father. I watched them go to father-daughter dances. Some of their parents were divorced but still involved in their lives. They didn't have to wonder who to make the card out to for Mother's Day or if they could make two because they didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings by leaving them out. I never saw them ask how to get a Father's Day card to their dad because they didn't have his address. For Mother's Day , I went to the cemetery, stole flowers from a random gravesite, and searched for my mother's grave. I never found her.

While I loved my grandparents, being raised by them was confusing to me and to every parent who ever asked if they could call my mom about a sleepover or check in about a bake sale. Every time I made a new friend, it also meant making a fresh introduction to my unusual family. "No, I don't have a mother," I remember saying so often it seemed to become a cursory part of any conversation I had with my friends' parents.

"Who do you live with?" They would ask as confusion was replaced with sadness when I answered.

Related stories

My grandparents were strict; they came from a different generation when kids had adult responsibilities. I could cook dinner at 10 and knew how to wash and hang curtains. I spent the Saturdays of my youth cleaning the house alongside my grandmother, who believed cleanliness was next to Godliness. Sometimes my friends would come to see if I could play, and I would have to send them away in what felt like a Cinderella moment.

They were different from my friends' parents . They dressed differently, listened to music from a different era, and held beliefs based on how and when they were raised. My grandmother and grandfather were the children of immigrants. They had witnessed the Great Depression and World War II. Hard work and their belief in God were the standards they lived and died by. They didn't care to discuss mental health, believed kids should be seen and not heard, and we've always had different political views.

There were benefits to being raised by my grandparents

While being raised differently from most of my peers wasn't easy, it also had benefits. It was through my grandparents that I learned some of my greatest lessons. I knew the words to every single song from the 1950s and 1960s.

When my friends and I went through a phase where we were obsessed with the 1950s, I had access to people who lived through the era and looked back on it fondly. My grandparents even allowed me to have a 1950s birthday party where we played their records and learned their dances.

My friends loved my grandparents, who were always eager to have them over for dinner or a sleepover , as long as chores were done. My grandmother loved to sit and talk with us and hear the latest gossip. Being raised by my grandparents also gave me an appreciation for hard work and seeing things through.

Gram and Gramps also went on to become caring and attentive great grandparents to my kids. Because of them, I had a place to grow up alongside my extended family. I am forever grateful, even if my childhood didn't look the same as my friends.

The sunday essay: are you there, grandma.

From the bloodlands to the Polish Children’s Camp in Pahiatua, I went looking for Grandma Stefania.

The Sunday Essay  is made possible thanks to the support of Creative New Zealand.

A shroud is a length of cloth wrapped around a body before burial; a thing that envelops or obscures, so as to conceal from view.

I was baptised when I was seven, embarrassingly later than my peers. It was the age where I felt most porous to the stories told to me about me. I was fat, I was ugly, I had no father, my mother was a whore, my eyes were too big. In the photo I bow my head to the priest pouring water on my head; the water falls like a veil. I wear a velour pink hoodie and a white dress, my hair pulled tautly into two braids. To be baptised is to be cleansed of original sin, meaning – we came to this world already dirty.

My siblings and I all attended a Catholic primary school, at my father’s request. My father was Catholic because his mother, my grandma Stefania, was. When my mama left my father, my siblings and I almost completely lost connection to our paternal side; it wasn’t safe. We left the East of the river to live on the West, and we never went back.

Grandma Stefania was a complicated character, I am told. The only memory I have of her is either mine or from a photograph: her feeding me chocolate cake in a high chair. I was only three when she died. What I know of grandma is made of fractures, remembered by my siblings and mama. Grandma could play piano. Grandma liked to feed people. Grandma was a hoarder; she had multiple chest freezers full of frozen meals, stacks of toilet paper, nappies, clothes, anything you could think of. Grandad would run away from Grandma; she treated him like a dog. Grandma was a staunch Catholic. Grandma’s parents died when she was young. Grandma had a tattoo on the side of one of her wrists; a collection of numbers. Grandma travelled in cattle wagons. Grandma never found her brother.

I turn the rosary beads around and around my wrist. Hail Mary, full of grace. Hail Mary, full of grace. Hail Mary, full of –

I was 11 and sitting on the carpet at my rural Manawatū school when I first heard about the Holocaust. On the overhead projector was a black and white photo of a mound of bodies, piled like rubbish. Next one: heads sticking out of wooden bunks, gaunt, haunted. Next: a pile of teeth with gold fillings, like the one on the side of my Poppa’s mouth when he laughed, but these ones not connected to a body; bodies. A feeling began to reside in me: how come no one ever told me this happened until now? The world I thought existed wasn’t real.

In high school we were asked to do a research project on a family member. I chose Grandma Stefania. My mama suggested I read a book called Krystyna’s Story (1992), because she remembered Grandma saying that Krystyna Ogonowska was a childhood friend of hers, and they had a similar journey to Aotearoa, New Zealand. The book was written by Krystyna’s daughter, Halina Ogonowska-Coates, who like me had only ever known fragments of her mother’s story.

One of the questions I presented to my class in response to this book was – Is it OK to resurface something someone wants to bury?

At the time, we lived in a house that had ghosts. I overheard my mama telling a friend she’d felt something follow her up the stairs. The farmer who died here? I feared if I went too far into my inquiry a ghost would also follow me. I guess it already was.

My teacher asked me if Grandma was Jewish. I said we always knew her as Catholic, so I couldn’t imagine she was. She suggested I call the New Zealand Jewish Archive and ask. When I called, I fumbled my way through my family history, trying to explain the blanks in my knowledge of my father’s side. When I told him Grandma’s name, there was a long pause while he looked in his records. No, she is not here. I thanked him, feeling embarrassed for calling. Wait , he said, with a last name like that, she could have been.

There are places where the shroud is thin – the cloth blowing in the wind – where you get so close you can almost see what’s behind it. Heaven and earth, the Celtic saying goes, are only three feet apart. Are you there, Grandma?

describing my grandmother essay

M y family is from the bloodlands: a term Yale historian Timothy Snyder coined for the territory that lies between central Poland and the Russian border, covering eastern Poland, Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic states. According to Snyder’s calculations in his book Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin, between 1930 and 1945 this was where 14 million innocent human beings (Jewish and non-Jewish) were murdered.

Both of Stefania’s parents (my great-grandparents) died sometime between their forced deportation from our homelands and their long journey to Siberian camps via cattle wagons. We do not know how they died or where their bodies are.

In most of the camps or Gulag , Polish prisoners were made to work regardless of their age or physical condition – refusal would result in execution. The work included timber logging, mining, railroad and canal building. Along with harsh weather, malnutrition and no medical care, large numbers of people died everyday.

In 1941, Germany’s invasion of the USSR prompted Joseph Stalin to become an ally with Great Britain and the United States and evacuate Polish prisoners and send them to Iran, Lebanon and Palestine. Only 120,000 were evacuated before mass graves of thousands of Polish officers, massacred by Soviet secret police, were discovered in the Katyn Forest . The USSR denied responsibility.

Those sent to Iran entered through the port of Anzali, on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Here 2,500 refugees were accepted per day. They were received with immense hospitality. It should be noted that today, however, Poland has shut the door on the influx of refugees travelling in the opposite direction.

Polish orphans in Anzali were sent on to orphanages in Isfahan and Mashhad. They were weak from their years in the camps, suffering from malaria, typhus, fevers, respiratory illnesses, and diseases caused by starvation. Desperate for food after starving for so long, refugees ate as much as they could. Several hundred Poles, mostly children, died shortly after arriving in Iran from acute dysentery caused by overeating.

I read that and think of grandma’s love of feeding people. Her chest freezers.

From 1942, other countries started receiving Polish refugees, including India, Uganda, Kenya, Tanganyika, South Africa, Mexico and Aotearoa, New Zealand.

On September 17, 2021, Russia’s Foreign Ministry marked the 82nd anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland with a Twitter post describing it as a “campaign of liberation”, stating that “…peoples of Western Belorussia and Western Ukraine greeted the Soviet soldiers with rejoicing”.

Similar suggested words to “shroud” are: screen, cloud, disguise, hide .

Mama thinks Grandma was between six and 10 years old when she arrived on the shore of Te-Whanganui-a-tara on 1 November 1944, one of 733 Polish orphans. In the 1967 documentary The Story of Seven Hundred Polish Children , welcoming crowds on the waterfront are joyous, waving and smiling, while the children and 102 adults look back startled, blank. They were transported to an old prisoner of war camp in Pahīatua, where they were told they could stay until the end of the war. The camp had vegetable gardens, a chapel, a recreation hall, a dining hall, a library, a gymnasium and a hospital.

A grotto was erected near the camp’s boundary, dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. It  was built of stones carried from the nearby river by the children.

Our Lady of Lourdes; Saint Mary; Holy Mary; Mother Mary; Virgin Mary; there is a recording of a ceremony in which two New Zealanders, Sylvia Wilson and Sylvia Chapman, gifted the orphans a copy of a bas-relief of Saint Mary carved in secret on a piece of wood by a Polish soldier in the USSR prison of Kozielsk in 1940. During the ceremony the chapel’s priest Fr Michał said, It is like the children are meeting a mother in exile.

There were more than 12 children at the camp who were orphans with no brothers or sisters. These children did not even know their surnames or where and when they were born. Grandma was one of them: she lost her one sibling, a brother, between evacuating the USSR camps and arriving in New Zealand. Unsure, therefore, whether these orphans had been baptised, Fr Michał gave them a special “provisional baptism”, so that they could be included with the other children who were attending first confession and communion.

If – there are a lot of ifs – Grandma, my great uncle, great grandma and great grandpa were Jewish, does that mean that Grandma was forced to become Catholic while in the children’s camp? At such a young age, did she recognise that to identify as Jewish was unsafe? Is this why she was such a staunch Catholic?

I guess the questions themselves are a shroud.

describing my grandmother essay

W ith her pale skin and blue eyes, Grandma became like any other Catholic pākehā living in Aotearoa. She married, moved to my grandfather’s family farm, had two children, ran the farmhouse and went to church on Sundays. She lived with a certain ease of assimilation due to her physical appearance. Mama says she does not remember her ever practising any Polish traditions.

In her essay Becoming Polish New Zealanders, Jozef Zawada writes:

Passing on their culture to the children is of utmost importance to all refugees and  exiles, and is seen as a continuation of their fight against a regime which has exiled them.

In the absence of my connection to Polish culture, I find myself making gołąbki and sauerkraut; underlining character descriptions in Polish author Olga Tokarczuk’s semi-fictitious novels, as if they were clues to myself.

My sister is still in contact with my father. She said she could ask him questions and pretend they were hers. Where was Grandma born? I wanted to point to a place; of origin, of loss. The next day she sent a photo of two strangers. These are our great-grandparents, they were both doctors. Dad says they were murdered by the Soviets, so was his uncle. Maybe buried in Russia in a mass grave. The woman looks like me. She is not smiling. They were born in Lwow, Poland now Lviv, Ukraine. It was bombed last year. I google Lviv and see images of castles, snow, angels perched on gothic churches, a clock tower, and then a horizon on fire, an apartment block collapsed to its middle, cars concave and windows shattered.

I look like her, don’t I? When I show my mama the photo of my great-grandmother, my mama’s face is unemotional. She continues making a cup of tea. You look more like Eva , she says. Eva is my mama’s grandmother. I think she is trying to tell me that in our family we have chosen to bury certain things (my father). Shroud translated to Polish is osłona, also meaning: cover, guard, shield, protection. Mama pulls the fabric over me.

In pictures of Saint Mary, she is always wearing a piece of blue fabric draped over her head and shoulders. It is a warm, soft blue, almost lavender. On the psychology of colour and emotion, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote in his 1810 book The Theory of Colours:

We love to contemplate blue, not because it advances to us, but because it draws us after it.

Mary is mythological. All that we have of her are dramatic stories and iconographic images, holding her child, Jesus. Who was she really? How did she look when she was walking? What did her voice sound like in the morning?

A white marble monolith was unveiled on 22 February 1975 at the site of the Polish Children’s Camp in Pahiatua. Its shadow at midday represents a mother holding a child.

J.D. Vance Has Written of His Struggles to Control His Anger

In his book “Hillbilly Elegy,” Mr. Vance chronicles the conflict and violence that shaped him and says his wife has helped him manage his emotions.

Senator J.D. Vance’s rapid political evolution from a moderate Republican to a leader of former President Donald J. Trump’s movement is one of the best-known aspects of his life.

Less so is his personal struggle to gain control of his anger, a battle that he documented in his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” published in 2016. “Even at my best, I’m a delayed explosion,” he wrote.

There is not much question why. Violence and conflict were part of his upbringing.

Mr. Vance’s grandmother, infuriated by her husband’s alcoholism, poured gasoline on him after he fell asleep on the couch in a drunken stupor, then dropped a flaming match on his chest. He survived.

Mr. Vance’s mother, who battled drug addiction, was so enraged at J.D. once that she threatened to crash their car and kill them both. He fled the car in terror and then watched her being driven off in the back of a police car.

When he was very young, Mr. Vance wrote, he tried to hide from the fights between his mother and whomever was her current partner. Later, he would run downstairs or listen through the wall, heart racing, simultaneously drawn to and repelled by the conflict. “When she lay sobbing in bed after another failed relationship, I felt a rage that could have driven me to kill,” he wrote.

As a young man, Mr. Vance found out that some families actually got along. One compelling example was the family of Usha Chilukuri, the fellow law student who, according to his book, he fell in love with after a single date. He wrote that he was amazed by the lack of drama at her family’s Thanksgiving dinner.

He had only two tools in his emotional quiver when he was upset, he said: withdraw like “a turtle” or scream. When Usha tried to comfort him after he thought he had flubbed a job interview, he yelled, “I didn’t get here by making excuses for failure!” Then he stormed out of the hotel room and paced the streets of Washington for hours alone.

Once he eventually realized he had to confront his inner demons, he tried counseling, he wrote, but “talking to some stranger about my feelings made me want to vomit.”

Instead, he hit the library. He read about how the consequences of childhood trauma last far into adulthood. He talked to his sister and his aunt, trying to understand his past.

But the real antidote, he wrote, proved to be Usha, whom he married in 2014. Close friends of the couple describe her as a steadying force.

“I continue to struggle with conflict, to fight the statistical odds that sometimes seem to bear down on me,” Mr. Vance wrote. “The sad fact is that I couldn’t do it without Usha.”

“I can be defused, but only with skill and precision. It’s not just that I’ve learned to control myself,” he wrote, “but that Usha has learned how to manage me.”
