Well, it all depends on if this is indeed a story about something you learned about your family, or if this is a story about what you learned independent of your family.

If this is in fact a story about how your family unit became closer, or learned about each other’s strengths, or came together to overcome a challenge, then you do have to spend some time and some scenes differentiating the various members of your family so that we readers get a sense of their personalities. Showing rather than telling is of course best here. The key is to find scenes that relate to your overall story that also allow you to provide those key details about these members of your family.

However, don’t forget that the main character of this story is always you. You are still central, and it is still your eyes through which we view this story and the people who populate it. So do provide us with your insights into these family members, and the ways in which you are indeed becoming closer as a unit or overcoming a challenge together.

This may involve scenes of the whole family together, and some one-on-one scenes of you, our protagonist, with one of your children, or just your partner, to give us a sense of the overall family dynamics as well as individual relationships.

If it is indeed the case that this story is about a family experience and the way, from your point of view, your family has gone through a change, then it is also a good idea to plant in the beginning of the story what that initial family quest is. Was the purpose of your trip explicitly to bond within your family unit, or was that a by-product? Was this the last trip together before the kids go off to college and you planned to make the most of this time together? Has it been a tough year for the family and this trip is all about release?

It’s a good idea to frame the intention of the trip. Even if there isn’t an explicit goal in mind, you might think deeply and manage to come up with a purpose that wasn’t exactly explicit, but was at the back of your mind.

If you are not in fact writing about how your family has changed, but how you alone have changed, then your family doesn’t need to be a big part of the story. You certainly don’t want to lie and pretend you were all alone when you weren’t, even for the sake of a clearer narrative.

You can name the people in your family travelling with you, but you don’t need to focus on them or present their personality sketches. They can just remain in the background as your story focuses on the more individual quest and change that transpired within you.

Work out if this story is about an individual change, or a family change..

Tell us the intention of the trip—to bond as a family? To commemorate something? To provide release after a loss?

Provide scenes of the whole family together, as well as individual relationships in order to help us to get to know these family members as individuals.

These scenes also need to move us in the direction of the change your family went through.

Remember that this story is still from your point of view, so do narrate your particular insights and perceptions about your family members and this new setting.

My brother is an engineering graduate and does a job in a well-known company. He is my best well-wisher and helps me in all ups and downs. My sister is also an engineering graduate and an employee in an IT company. She always finds time to help me with all my difficulties and she is my secret keeper too.

My family is a lifeline to whom I can run to, whatever may be the situation I am facing. My family guides me to be a good person and help me in nurturing good values. My family is one the most bizarre family in the world. We are four people, my mother, my father, my younger brother and me. While my father is the one who does work for a living, it is my mother who is the boss of the house. My father is a humble person. He is an officer in a government department. My mother is a housewife. It is our mother who takes care of our studies as our father is often busy with his official assignments and even travels for days together. He, at a time, seems so helpless when our mother says to obey his sister. I just love that moment. But not all days are the same. I hate having to study all along while he gets to play more than me.

The Atmosphere in my Family:

We largely have a peaceful atmosphere at home. After school, our time is spent on studying, playing and watching television, which of course our mother does not like. Unlike other couples, my mother and father seldom have a fight. In fact, as soon we see an argument brewing up, one of them just withdraws and it is just rare to see a heated conversation between them. This is what I like the most about them as I feel that my parents are so cool. It is only me and brother who love to fight with each other.

However, we know that behind those fights, it is actually our love for each other which binds us together. I just enjoy being at home spending time with my parents and my brother. I just feel how bad it would be when tomorrow I and my brother shall move on for our professional lives and we shall not be able to spend much time together. However, it is the memories of today which shall be with me forever and will bring a smile on my face anytime when I feel low.

2. Kindness to Others:

This is not a common trait to all. My mom has this belief that if the world and everybody in it shows love and kindness to one another, there will be no hatred and wars will be eradicated. This is a family value that we cherish so much. I learnt to show love to everybody. Even when we did not have much, my parents will still give to those who are needy. My dad says that the world is like a river, we would eventually flow into one another later and you do not know the future, the person you helped today might eventually be of help to you tomorrow.

3. Education:

This is a value that has been passed from generation to generation in my family. My dad would say that education is the best legacy you can give to a child. My family does everything in their capacity for you to get a sound and benefitting education. The acquisition of knowledge is also quite important. All of us try to gain more and more knowledge because we all have a family slogan that says “knowledge is power and that power makes me a hero.”

We did not have much when I was growing up; my dad lost his job and still did not allow anything of the pressure change how he behaved to us at home. He is caring, gentle, accommodating and disciplined.

My mum is the best cook in the world. I do not know where I would be today without my mum. I owe her a lot. She is a teacher by profession and this fascinates me a lot because not only is she inculcating knowledge in the young minds of tomorrow, she is also building the future of our society at large. I want to be like my mum. I remember those times when she had to sacrifice when the most precious of her things just to make me happy. She is loving, caring, understanding, accommodating. In fact, she is everything you can ever wish for in a mother.

My elder sisters are the best. Although they can be frustrating sometimes but that is mostly because of my stubbornness. They pretend they do not really care but deep inside they do. The things they do even subconsciously say otherwise. I remember a day in elementary school, I was being bullied a boy in class. On this particular day, he hit me. Unknowing to me, my sister heard about it and she beat the boy and made him apologise to me, I felt so happy that day because I had someone who had my back.

My brother is one of the best gifts I have received. He is the last child and this gives him an opportunity to be annoying if you know what I mean. He is joyful and always ready to heed correction. There was this day, I heard him bragging to his friends about how awesome I am, and I was the happiest that day.

We all have one reason or the other on why we love our family. I love mine because they are the best gift I could ever ask for and the fact that they have been there for me through the good, bad and funny times.

2. Loyalty: loyalty is something that comes as a result of love. Family members should stay devoted to each other. It is important that we are able to count on our family to have our back anytime we are facing problems.

The importance of family can never be overstated even though we live in a different time now and our attitudes to relationships, marriage and what a family should be has changed. The family is something that we need to help share our problems and be there for us anytime we have issues. A lot of the things that were not acceptable in the past and we now see as normal. Even with all the changes that the society has effected on our family system, the family still remains the major foundation of our society and this will remain the same.

My family is the best gift I have got. A family can be simply said to mean a social group of different people in our society that includes one or more parents and also their children. In a family, every member of the family commits to other members of the family in a mutual relationship. A family is a very important unit and the smallest unit in the society. A family whether a big one or a small one is of very great importance and use to all of its members and is believed to be the unit of our society that is strongest because the society is formed from the coming together and culmination of various families.

I am from a middle class and average family with six members (my father, my mother, my grandmother, my grandfather, my younger brother and me). My grandfather is the head of the family and we all respect and listen to him. He is really wise and tries to advise each and every one of us using his many life experiences. He has been involved in many interesting and adventurous activities that he tells me about all the time. Most of the time, he has the final say on all of our family issues and he does his best to make all his decisions impartial.

Any time we are eating today as a family, he sits at the top of the table; we all have designated seats at the dining table. When my brother and I are available, my grandfather teaches us about our traditions and cultures. My grandfather is very friendly and has a cool and great personality and tries to talk nicely and calmly to everyone passing across his message without being rude. He helps my brother and sometimes me with our assignments. He majorly teaches us about all of the tools we need to be successful in life including punctuality, discipline, moral, cleanliness, continuity, honesty, hard work and trustworthiness.

My lovely grandmother is one of the nicest people I know, she tells my brother and I lovely stories every night. My father is a civil engineer and he is very hardworking, sincere and punctual. He is the breadwinner of the family and does his best to provide for every member of the family even if that means he has to work extra hours. My mother is very sweet and takes care of every member of the family even though she works as an accountant at a firm. She wakes up very early in the morning to make preparations for the day. My brother is a funny and jovial person that enjoys sporting activities and I love him so much.

Sometimes I wish my cousins, uncles and aunts lived with us, I love having them around. There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of having everyone around. I have highlighted some below.

Some advantages are:

1. It gives a better routine of living that can contribute to a proper growth.

2. Having a joint family helps in following the numerous principles of an equitable economy and helps teach discipline and respect. It also teaches us how to share the burden of other family members.

3. There is the understanding of having to adjust to the needs of other family members.

4. The children in a large family get to grow up in a happy environment because they have children of their age around that they can play with.

5. All the members of a joint family are usually very disciplined and responsible as everyone has to follow the instructions of the family head.

1. There is always the chance of a rift or fight between the family members because of the possible imbalance of feelings of oneness, brotherly love and feeling of generosity.

2. There is a chance of the members of the family that earn very high looking down on members of the family that do not.

I come from a big family. My family has not moved to an urban area and so we still live as a wider circle together with the extended family. In my nuclear family, I am the first born of four children. I have one sister and two brothers who are still at school. I have three aunts and two uncles. My cousins are twelve in number and most of them are at school except for the youngest ones.

My grandparents are very old and they do not get out of the house much and are being taken care by my parents and aunts. I like the adventurous nature of my family because we always have fun whenever we go for holiday vacations or have a family event.

Moral cultural and spiritual values are highly cared for in the society. My family is oriented in good moral values and believe we make a good role model for the society. Despite the influence of education, the family has been able to maintain the culture and traditions of Indian people. Our Weekend Outings and House Parties:

We do not have many of these in our family because of the different schedules among the members. We only have weekend outings and house parties during holidays. Birthday parties are and weddings are the parties that we frequently have as a family. I love parties at home because the food is usually exceptionally good. Also, the dancing and happy faces. Weekend outings are usually in form of picnics and they are usually full of games.

Cousins Visit during Summer:

My family is young and only three of my cousins are in college. The rest are in high school or elementary schools. Whenever my cousins come home from school, it is a happy moment for the whole family and we host parties to welcome them home. Whenever my older cousins are at home, I enjoy their company and I love to hear stories about college because that is where I will be in a few years’ time.

On previous holidays, My family and I have been travelling to the island of Langkawi. We were there for 4 days and 3 nights. Before we were on holiday there, my mom and dad were on vacation Kedah first. When they had been there, me and my other family members went to vacation on the island of Langkawi. We arrived in island in the evening. We did not check in the hotel first, but we went to our first destinations is Cable Car. The cable car has three stops destination that we had to through. It’s quite scary when we rode it. We had use the cable car to climbing up and down.

After we went to Cable Car, we rested ourselves and pray at hotel. In night, we dinner together at Telaga Seafood Restaurant. This restaurant provide Westerns food, Arabian food and Malay food. We ate a lot of food that my parents ordering to us. After we finished our dinner, we take a chance to window shopping and walking at row of shops that have in there. A lot of shops, sell, souvenirs, clothes, bag and many things that can we buy to give to other people. But in first day , we just survey and window shopping before we decide to buy it.

In second day, we breakfast at the hotel and started our journey at Langkawi Island. My sister had already booking our boat to go around in Langkawi Island. The islands that available in Langkawi Island is like ” Pulau Kasut” , ” Gua Buaya” , Gorilla Island , Lady Island and a lot of island that have in there. But in we also went to swimming at Private Island. This island we can swimming but have a time that we can swim at there. In evening, we’re going to “Dayang Bunting Island” there’s is the most beautiful island in the Langkawi Island.

In third day, my sister already go to the shopping and bought the things that she wanted give to her friends. At Langkawi Island, the price of the chocolate,clothes and souviners is cheaper and there have duty shop that we can bought chocolate,cigarette and perfume. But for me, i just bought some of chocolate for my friends and my ownself. There’s so many brand of chocolate that we can buy it at there and for those who really likes the chocolate surely cannot decide what type of chocolate they want to buy it. Our next destination is going to factory of sea cucumber and at there we can see how the process see cucumber was made.

On the last day, before we’re going to go back home we decide to lunch at Langkawi Island because want to ate at “Rojak Hafiz”. Most of people said ” Rojak Hafiz” is the most famous rojak stall at Langkawi Island and taste of rojak was supper awesome and source of the rojak is so delicious. After all of us done with lunch, we rushed to the jetty and our tickets at 3:30p.m . This is the most best ever family trip in my life eventhough my parents didn’t bring us to overseas for enjoy our holidays but for me the most important things is when my family can give some space and spend their times to made this family trip succesful.

But the biggest adventure came after this. We had to take horses to go to the hilltop. I have seen horses in books. But had never ridden them. I clapped my hands in joy. My father and I got onto one. It slowly started moving. I touched the soft mane of the horse and it neighed. Soon we were at the top of the mountain. I looked down and got scared. It was dark. Long waterfalls were falling from the top. I stared at it. Suddenly I could not breathe. I tried hard but failed.

I soon fainted and was about to fall off horseback. But my father immediately caught me and we came down. The people nearby helped me and I opened my eyes. I had turned blue for no air. The people gave me hot soup to drink and feel warm. Gradually I felt better. After this, we left for our hotels. That day I was scared, but today I feel it as my best adventure. I will never forget this wonderful trip.

Road journeys have always fascinated me. I had been on many road trips with my family. We went to my maternal grandparents’ place in Chandigarh during our summer vacations each year. I went there with my brother and mother. My brother was in the seventh grade at that time and he still had to wait till the mid of May for the vacations to start. So, we couldn’t plan anything together anytime soon.

After a year of hard work and rigorous study sessions, I really needed a break to rejuvenate. It was then that I took permission from my parents to travel alone to visit my grandparents and cousins in Chandigarh.

I was excited yet nervous about this first ever solo road journey of mine. I took the window seat in a bus and enjoyed the view outside. After around 2 hours, the bus stopped at a restaurant. I stepped out of the bus to grab a cup of tea and sandwich. Sitting all by myself, exploring new things was a unique experience for me.

As we moved further on our journey, I spoke to the lady sitting beside me. She was also travelling alone. She told me that she travels alone quite frequently for business as well as leisure trips. She shared many interesting incidents. I enjoyed talking to her and before I could realize this beautiful road journey came to an end.

Road trips are fun. I always look forward to road trip with family. We are all so busy with our daily chores that we hardly spend any time with each other. It is during such trips that we get to spend quality time with one another. I had been on quite a few road trips with family. The best among these was our trip to the beautiful Indian town, Dalhousie.

Road Trip to Dalhousie

During my last summer vacations, we all suggested different places for road trip and finally decided to go to Dalhousie. Dalhousie is around ten hours away from our place so we decided to go for a night journey. We booked a six-seater cab to accommodate our family of five – Me, my mother, father, brother and sister.

My father chose not to drive as it was a night journey and he wanted to wake up fresh the next morning. The driver who accompanied us was not only skilled at driving in hilly areas but was also aware about the various site-seeing places in Dalhousie as he had been there few times.

We played antakshari and dumb charades and chatted with each other until late night. Next morning, we woke up as the driver stopped the car and announced we have reached our destination. The place was beautiful and the weather was amazing.

Exploring Dalhousie

Our rooms were cosy and comfortable and the view outside was mesmerizing. I could see the beautiful mountains and greenery all around. We had our breakfast, got ready and went for site-seeing. Punch Pula was the first tourist attraction we visited. It was a beautiful waterfall that offered a scenic view. We roamed around the place for some time and sat there enjoying the beauty of the nature.

Next, we went to Dainkund Peak. The view from the peak was just amazing. We then headed back to our hotel. We had dinner on the way and dosed off to sleep almost as soon as we reached our room as it had been an extremely tiring day.

Over the next two days, we saw several breathtaking places including Chamera Lake, Sach Pass, St. John’s Church, Bara Patthar Temple and Khajjar Lake. The experience was awesome. Dalhousie is a beautiful place that encompasses several spectacular tourist attractions. The best part is that it is tranquil unlike many other hill stations that are overcrowded most of the times.

Road trips with family strengthen the familial bond. Many of the fun things we indulge in during these trips are missed out in the routine life. It is these little things that bring us closer. I will always cherish the moments we spent on my road trip to Dalhousie.

On the Way to Manali

Manali is around 12 hours away from our city. So, overnight journey was planned for the trip. We couldn’t stop giggling as we sat in the bus. The atmosphere was all cheerful. We played antakshari, cracked jokes and laughed to make the most of this time together. Soon, we were tired and dosed off to sleep. As I woke up in the morning, I saw the breathtaking view of mountains from the window. We were about to reach our destination. I opened the window to feel the fresh air on my face. It was a great start of the day.

The bus stopped at a road side dhaba where we freshened up and had breakfast. We had piping hot Maggi along with a cup of coffee for breakfast. After having this delicious food we headed further.

Site-Seeing at Manali

After relaxing for a while in the hotel, we got dressed and headed to the Hidimba Temple which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Manali. The temple was beautiful and serene. After spending some time there we went to the mall road. We spent our evening roaming on the mall road viewing the beauty of the place.

Next day, we went to Rohtang pass which was located at a great height. The place was colder than Manali and we had our jackets on even in the month of June. The cool breeze, fresh air and scenic view of the place were a perfect recipe for rejuvenation.

The next day we shopped at the local market. I bought souvenirs for friends and family. I also brought a shawl for my mother, a watch for my sister and a woollen cap for my father. We had our dinner at a popular restaurant in Manali and then headed back home. We sat with our close pals in the bus and chatted until late at night before we dosed off to sleep.

We came back with several memories that we shall cherish forever. I look forward to many more such road trips with friends.

One of the most memorable trips I have been on with my family was our road trip to Jaipur.

Our Road Journey to Jaipur

It was the month of December and we had our Christmas holidays. It had been long that we had planned a family trip. We decided to make the most of these holidays. So, we planned a road trip to Jaipur. The weather was perfect to roam around in the beautiful Pink City.

We started from our place at around 5 in the morning and reached Jaipur at around 2 in the afternoon. We stopped by at two places during our journey. Our first halt was at a road side dhaba which is famous for its scrumptious paranthas. We relished the paranthas with curd. We then relaxed for a while and started our journey further. Next, we stopped to have tea and stretch a bit after sitting for hours in the car.

Site Seeing in Jaipur

The weather in Jaipur was pleasant. We checked into our hotel, rested for some time and then set out for site seeing. On the first day, we saw Jal Mahal and Hawa Mahal. I was mesmerized looking at the beauty of these edifices. After this long tiring day, the scrumptious Rajasthani thali served to us for dinner was just what we needed.

The next day, we went to Nahargarh Fort. The fort was located at a hill and it took a while to reach there. The fort was spectacular and so was the view from there. Next, we went to Amer Fort which was equally beautiful. Having spent the evening in and around Amer Fort, we headed to a famous restaurant to have our dinner. I simply love Rajasthani food and the one served at this restaurant was just outstanding.

On the third day of the trip, we decided to explore the local market. Jaipur is famous for its beautiful handicraft items, bandhani suits and Jaipuri print bed sheets. There is so much to shop from. We roamed around the market eating the delicious street food and indulging in a lot of shopping. We went back to the hotel and had our dinner in the room as we had been extremely exhausted.

Visit to Chokhi Dhani

On the fourth day (which was the last day of the trip), we decided to visit Chokhi Dhani which is a beautiful place that gives a true picture of the Rajasthani culture. The place hosts numerous cultural events, displays Rajasthani art and serves scrumptious Rajasthani food. From camel rides to puppet shows, from village games to Rajasthani folk dances – this place gives the feeling of being in the heart of Rajasthan.

The place is beautifully decorated and looks all the more spectacular when it is all lit up at night. We roamed around the place, indulged in various activities and enjoyed ourselves to the chore. We also bought sovereigns from this place. After spending around four-five hours at this place, we headed back to Delhi. We took just one halt on our way back.

This was one of the best road trips with my family. I enjoyed every bit of it. Jaipur is a beautiful place that encompasses architectural marvels. The food served there is equally amazing. The company of my family members made it all the more special. We came back with numerous beautiful memories that I will cherish forever. I wish to visit this place again.

Looking for the Woman Who Made Us

After a lifetime apart, my brothers and i went searching for our biological mother. we found family instead..

Two years ago, I stood with my brother Evan, then 36, 16 months older than me, in a parking lot in upstate New York, several hours away from our respective homes. Our older brother, Eric, who had recently turned 40, was on the other side of the lot talking animatedly with a stranger, an older man wearing giant aviator sunglasses and a military-style jacket, his long, shaggy hair streaked with red dye.

“What do you think they’re talking about?” I asked Evan.

“No idea,” he responded. “Which apartment do you think is hers?”

We scanned the surrounding two-story apartment complex for a sign of the woman who gave birth to us.

I always knew I was adopted . I paid little mind to the idea of my birth mother and didn’t consciously feel that being adopted was of major significance. I grew up the only child of parents with whom I was exceptionally close. Everyone knew my mother was my best friend, it was a thing . Strangers remarked on how much we resembled each other, despite the fact that when examined closely, none of our features are alike. But, as mother and child, we fit. When other kids asked who my “real parents” were, I’d explain that my real parents are my parents, the ones raising me, full stop. I’d won the adoptive-parents jackpot, and while I knew there was another dimension that existed inside of me, I felt protective of our family unit.

Still, sometimes, I’d wistfully gaze out the window and wonder about the people I came from, if they grieved me day in and out. I’d thank them quietly for giving me life and giving me to the right family, letting them know they need not worry, I was loved unconditionally. Despite my close bond with my parents, I felt of another time and place, and derived inordinate joy whenever I found someone who liked any of the same things I did. I often wondered if I had a sibling: where they were, who they were with, what they liked and dreamed of.

My brothers and I had each left our spouses and children at home for a weekend at an Airbnb decorated with several variations of “Live, Laugh, Love” signs, to act like idiots together after a lifetime of separation and attempt to get a glimpse of our biological mother in person. We were in her Finger Lakes town. We hadn’t hatched a concrete plan — how to find her, if we would tell her who we were, how to avoid rattling her — which was fitting, given that she never had plans for any of us. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia in her late 20s and refused medication. Her life since had been shaped by paranoia, auditory hallucinations, and, I’ve learned, denial of our existence.

Prior to this investigatory weekend trip, I’d spent a lot of time wondering if seeing the three of her children together would elicit a spark of recognition in her. I’d seen old photos and it was clear we looked alike — same thick, blond hair and large, downturned blue eyes. We’d been told by family members that she’d gush over any and all young boys she encountered on the street or in stores, which those around her figured was due to the fact she gave up her own sons; maybe she’d be drawn to one of my brothers or both. According to family and childhood friends, she liked talking to anyone with ears, so maybe she’d just strike up a conversation with all three of us at once.

But I knew that even when her stomach had swelled to the size of a watermelon, she refused to believe she was pregnant. Though we were more difficult to deny once we emerged from her body, she declined to hold or look at me or Eric. Maybe it was too painful knowing she’d have to give us away, or maybe the medication she was administered during her third-trimester hospitalizations bludgeoned her ability to emote.

With Evan, we knew that in July 1985, she arrived on Cape Cod — where she’d spent summers since she was a girl — nine months pregnant, sleeping on a friend’s boat, denying she was carrying a child. In a state of psychosis, she gave birth to her second son and named him after her then-husband, William, who she claimed was his father despite the fact that he had a vasectomy. (His adoptive parents changed his name to Evan.) After giving birth, she vacillated between wanting to keep Evan and remarking on his beauty to showing zero awareness of him or her surroundings. She discharged herself without notifying the hospital staff, leaving Evan behind. He was transferred to a foster mother until his adoptive parents gave him a permanent home four months after his birth.

When I became a mother, it became difficult to minimize the fact that I was given up at birth. When I held my son for the first time, nursed him, felt his skin, kissed his head, I understood the magnitude of what it was to carry a child and give it away. I pictured myself alone in a bassinet for two days, pityingly looked after by hospital staff before my parents came to take me home.

I’d always suffered from anxiety, and as the postpartum months unfolded, it became debilitating. In the past, I hadn’t considered its potential cause, whether it might be some combination of biology and being abandoned at birth. When my son was 2, I was venting to my parents about my neuroses when my mother asked if I wanted to know about my biological mother. Sure, I said, and so my parents shared her full name and that she was 39 years old when she gave birth to me — which took me by surprise. I’d envisioned her as a teenager my entire life. Two years later, in early 2020, just before COVID-19 brought an end-of-days feeling to New York City, I visited my father while he was recovering from surgery uptown. My mother was there, too, and once again we discussed my anxiety. She asked if I’d been wondering more about my biological mother.

She pulled out her iPhone and brought up a Facebook account for my biological uncle’s widow, my aunt. Her name had been listed in the online obituaries for my biological grandmother and uncle. My mother had come across those obituaries when she Googled my biological mother’s name, which, unbeknownst to me, she’d been doing every so often for years in an attempt to gather answers about where I came from. She knew I’d inevitably ask questions and wanted to be prepared. So there, in the hospital room with my mother and father, I messaged my biological mother’s sister-in-law.

It took her two months to respond. My husband, son, and I had moved into my parents’ suburban home to ride out the pandemic. We were living in my childhood bedroom, and I had just gone on anxiety medication for the first time, my body still making sense of its new chemistry, when my aunt divulged details that I’d never known: My biological mother, who could go from being disarmingly charming to yelling accusations at strangers — “You’re in the CIA,” “You’re a whore” — had paranoid schizophrenia for which she refused treatment, my aunt told me. I had two older siblings who had also been given up by the same mother, and my oldest sibling, Eric, had revealed himself and met our late grandmother before she passed. We’d still have to hunt down the middle sibling — “I don’t have info on that one,” my aunt said matter-of-factly.

I crumbled in my childhood bedroom, my parents wiping my tears. It became clear that my biological mother never grieved for me at all, that my parents rescued me in a state of emergency. Her family and friends regarded her illness as tragic, and the three children she gave away as the ultimate manifestation of this tragedy.

Still, I wanted more. Once I learned a little, I had to know everything; the need for details was manic, unrelenting. My mother and I launched an amateur investigation unit into the strangers from whom I emerged. A cousin, who I met on 23andMe, told me her father housed my biological mother at his place in Palm Springs in the ’80s, where she was hanging out with pro golfers. Realistically, they might have been instructors, but my mother and I nonetheless proceeded to scan countless Google images of cup winners from the era for signs of my biological father, their swoops of brown hair and square jaws and crow’s-feet all seemingly blending into one face.

In part, I was distracting myself from the anticipation of meeting Eric. I was waiting for my aunt to connect us, as she’d promised. Six days passed and there was still no word from her. I feared she told him about me and he didn’t want to meet me. With my parents’ and husband’s encouragement, I flicked her a text to check in; it had slipped her mind somehow.

Soon, my new brother and I were on the line. Our upbringings were very different, but elements of our personalities were the same: class clowns, late bloomers in romantic relationships. Both feeling slightly out of place in the world. When our families got together two months later, our kids became cousins, our spouses became fast friends. It was surreal and bittersweet.

A year and a half later, we tracked down Evan, a seemingly needle-in-the-haystack feat. We were initially reluctant to pursue him, hoping he’d pop up on one of the DNA databases, trying to respect what we assumed were his wishes to remain unaware of his genetic history. But we grew impatient, so I contacted a private investigator in Massachusetts, where he was born. The PI generously connected me to a woman who worked at the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, and everything unfolded from there.

In the months that followed, my brothers and I spoke on a daily, sometimes hourly basis over group text, phone calls, and Instagram DM. We discussed mundane things, our day-to-day goings-on, as well as the heavier, haunting memories from our respective pasts. By telling my brothers the things that have gnawed at me — a falling-out with a friend, a past failure at work, a long-ago embarrassing moment — I was relieved of much of the pain that accumulated within me. There was never enough time together, no amount of storytelling or photo exchanging that could make up for the lost years. While I was excited and captivated by our drawn-out game of catch-up, I also experienced grief from not having them during my formative moments. I struggled to make sense of the highs and lows of my new reality.

Now, my siblings and I were together, standing at the entrance to our biological mother’s apartment complex, trying to appear as though our presence was nothing out of the ordinary. It turned out that the man who Eric had befriended in the parking lot knew her. They were friends; she relied on him to drive her to get cheap beer and other provisions. He was fascinated by her seemingly glamorous background and deciphering what was real and what she’d conjured in her mind. And she was now about to make her way down the path into the parking lot, he said, so we should stay put.

“Holy crap, Casey,” Evan whispered urgently, “she looks just like you. Just like you.” I looked over at the woman we came from, a petite figure dressed in shin-high rubber boots over jeans and a navy-blue ski cap. I was amazed at how delicate she was. Her face was angled toward the ground, and we observed her as she actively avoided crossing our path. She passed the staircase, zooming right by us.

“Excuse me,” Eric called.

“Yes?” she answered in a bright, clear voice.

“Excuse me, can you tell me of a good place to eat around here?”

“Just there, down the road,” she said, confident and self-assured, speaking in a youthful tone that didn’t match her 74 years. “There are all the restaurants, places to eat.”

“Oh, okay, uh,” Eric said, attempting to keep her talking. “So there’s like a —”

“Right there, down the road,” she said, waving her long, elegant hand. And then her face turned toward ours and I saw myself. Rounded eyebrows and big square teeth. I couldn’t make out all the specifics of her features, but in that moment I had a glimmer of understanding of what it must be like to grow up with a family member who looks like you, and to take it for granted; to not obsess over details of familial resemblance but simply recognize your own essence in the face, body, and presence of another person, without effort or thought.

“And they serve breakfast?” Eric asked.

Slightly agitated by our ignorance and persistence, but unfailingly polite, she responded: “There’s a place called Bobby’s, on the corner.” She had immaculate diction, a transatlantic accent. We watched her figure fade into the distance, back into her building. Her voice sounded so much like mine in pitch and tone. We looked at one another and exchanged shocked smiles. Even though she’d more or less avoided us, we felt relief: She was alive and vibrant, a body with purpose in the world, not decrepit as I’d envisioned.

“Funny, she never does that. She always stops to say hello, talks and talks. You could blow your brains out with how much she talks,” her friend said.

This stranger served as a portal into our biological mother in the present day. A woman with a complicated brain who lived very simply. No attachments except to her routines and habits. She slathered her face in Vaseline to ensure it remained relatively supple. The Vaseline lady, that’s what they call her around town, her friend told us. She neglected to check her mail and answered the door for strangers in an oversize T-shirt, no bra. She tried to flirt with rich old men with summer homes on the lake. She talked about all the old boyfriends, about getting laid, he explained.

In a lot of ways, she was the same girl as she was in her 20s, when whispers of her psychosis began. Her voice and mannerisms and diminutive stature all felt like that of a girl. There were many things she did, like having us, that should’ve changed her but didn’t. She carried on, clinging to select elements of her past while remaining unable to accept others.

Through conversations with our aunt, Eric’s relationship with our late biological grandmother, and now, through her friend, our mother’s life was coming into sharper focus. There’d been a beach house on the Cape, yearlong travels through Europe, boyfriends who owned galleries, a well-heeled liberal-arts college. Then there were the years on the road, living out of her car while traversing the country, collecting men along the way. Now, there was her small two-bedroom apartment that she kept sparkling clean, waxing the floors day in and day out, shoving every last article of clothing into her closets. Doing her same toning exercises from the Jane Fonda days, lifting her legs with pointed toes. There is no TV because of what she calls “The Wires.” The Wires are how the FBI and the Mafia tap into your activities. The small iPhone computers are intriguing, but she knows better than to trust them. All she has is a landline phone that she leaves unplugged, except for when she needs to make an outgoing call. She’d prefer to catch up on the day’s news at Wegmans and enlist her friend from the parking lot to help her take care of her affairs, driving her to the flea market or supermarket or wherever she needs to go.

“You know, I think she’d be open to meeting you three,” he said.

“You really think so?” I said. “She seems to want nothing to do with us.”

“She always has people coming by,” he said. “You should tell her who you are.”

Nothing about our biological mother’s behavior indicated that she wanted to meet us. And, leading up to this trip, I didn’t think that we’d actually be exposing ourselves, letting her know we’re the ones she gave away. There was no need to stir the pot, to create chaos when she already had enough clamor in her mind. It would be selfish and potentially dangerous. What if she had an outburst that required police intervention? I was already grateful enough that my brothers and I could begin to emerge from the grief of not having grown up together and could now create a new life. I had my parents who welcomed this new reality, patient and accepting and sharing in my excitement. I saw the woman who brought me into the world and now understood that I didn’t fall from the sky like an alien. Wasn’t I pushing my luck by chasing her?

Nonetheless, we were soon making our way up her staircase. We arrived at a landing at the top of the first stairwell, right outside her door. I knew this was ill-conceived, but I couldn’t resist the momentum. We were here and needed to commit.

I pressed my back against the opposite wall, as far away from her door as possible. Evan joined me in seeking distance but pulled out his phone and began discreetly recording, so we could remember the sound of her voice.

Eric knocked on the door. “No, no thank you,” she responded quickly. She sounded so young.

“Oh, I’m sorry, we’re just —”

“You should never knock on a stranger’s door,” she said, reprimanding us like she would her own children.

“You’re … ” I made sure to say her name, let her know I knew it.

“Go away!” she shouted. “Just go away.”

We took a beat before scampering down the steps as fast as we could, bolting out the front door. We’d been gifted with an answer, go away, the words confirming what I already knew: that our lives had taken the exact trajectories they were supposed to.

In my gut, I know she knew who we were. I wanted her to know we were raised well — that, despite our current actions, we weren’t disrespectful. Just curious.

So we respected her command. For now.

My husband, Dan Collins, died this month. It was because of Covid and pneumonia. By the time he passed, Dan had been sedated for a while, and there’s a small controversy between me and my sisters over what was said the last time he and I actually exchanged words. It was either “I love you” or Dan’s claim that he was the one who ordered cans of salmon and vegetable for our dog.

Either one seems good. One of the great joys of a long marriage is how the personal and pragmatic moosh together.

We married in 1970, when we were living in Amherst, graduate students studying government at the University of Massachusetts. Dan, who had been drafted right out of college, always said that he’d signed up for the program because it would mean an early release from a deeply boring job processing forms for the Army.

My conservative parents were thrilled when I was home for vacation and received a picture of my new boyfriend in uniform and carrying a rifle, taken while he was finishing up some final piece of duty. They became less euphoric when they read his inscription: “Pfc. Daniel Collins awaits the next infringement of his civil liberties.”

We lived together for a couple of years, and I agreed to become “Gail Collins” while we were still single because our postal worker refused to deliver mail to a man and woman at the same address with different names.

Dan got a reporting job at The Evening Sentinel, a paper in Ansonia, Conn. He proposed when I told him I was not following him to the Lower Naugatuck Valley unless we were married.
