How to Choose an Online Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education Program

Students considering earning their early childhood education degree online should consider many factors as they compare various programs, including curriculum content, classroom setting requirements, and how the program supports online students.

WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THIS PROGRAM?

Course content can vary between programs, and students should seek programs that offer courses in subject matter that aligns with their career and individual interests. Core courses cover the various learning styles of children and teaching methodologies that meet a wide range of needs and abilities. It's important to know your intended career path, as online schools for early childhood education focus on different aspects of the field and better prepare students for certain careers.

WILL I GET TO WORK IN A CLASSROOM IF I ATTEND AN ONLINE PROGRAM?

Students who plan to pursue teaching licensure after they complete their accredited online early childhood education degree should verify that the program they wish to attend includes a clinical component, which is required by state licensure commissions. This means that degree candidates are offered opportunities to learn and apply their knowledge in a classroom environment under the supervision of a licensed instructor, who acts as a mentor and oversees the development of their teaching skills.

HOW DOES THIS PROGRAM SUPPORT ONLINE STUDENTS?

Online schools for early childhood education vary in the level of support they provide to online students. Some universities help students secure a classroom student teaching position. Schools often provide mentors and other online resources for distance learners, such as career services and interview preparation. Mentors supply degree candidates with helpful strategies for managing difficult students and balancing the demands of parents with government-mandated curricula.

Accreditation for Early Childhood Education Programs

Accreditation is awarded after a school has passed inspection by an accreditation agency. National accreditation agencies generally accredit vocational, career, and trade schools; it is seen as less prestigious than region accreditation. Regionally accredited graduate schools typically require applicants to have an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Regional accreditation means that a school’s program has met the high standards applied by one of the six regional accrediting agencies in the United States. Students may want to look for program accreditation that's awarded by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The NAEYC applies the highest standards in evaluating programs for accreditation to meet state licensure requirements.

The Advantages of Studying Early Childhood Education Online

While graduates with associate degrees can pursue early childhood education employment, a bachelor’s-level education can provide additional benefits. Bachelor’s degree-holders can work as lead preschool teachers, preschool directors, and elementary teachers for K-3 students. Individuals with associate degrees can only work in lower-level education jobs, like assistant preschool teachers.

Earning a master’s in early childhood education can deliver even more opportunities, such as roles in advanced fields like curriculum development or principalship. Graduates can also qualify for college professor employment to teach early childhood education.

For most early childhood education careers, a bachelor’s degree will suffice. If you’re undecided about pursuing a higher degree, consider the potential salaries of careers in early childhood education.

What Courses Will I Take in an Online Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education Program?

  • Principles of Development in Infancy: In this class, students learn the normal stages of development over the first few months of a child’s life. This course also covers methods of recognizing and intervening in developmental problems that may begin during infancy.
  • Health, Safety, and Nutrition: Enrollees learn about what children should eat, how to prevent dangerous accidents, and how to foster a healthy learning environment. When adults meet children’s physical needs, kids can focus on learning and developing.
  • Child and Family Development: Children grow and change significantly from ages 3-6. In this course, students learn children’s stages of growth and how family development can affect the process. Enrollees explore normal characteristics for each early childhood stage, allowing them to identify children who may have developmental delays.
  • Relationships in Today’s Families: No two family units have the same dynamics, and learning about the differences can help educators understand how to best communicate with and motivate young children. Unfortunately, some children come from broken homes, and teachers must be sensitive to a child’s home life.
  • Classroom Experience: Online early childhood education programs require real-world classroom experience. In this class, students work in classroom settings under lead teachers’ supervision. Enrollees develop familiarity with creating and implementing lesson plans.

You will have many opportunities to integrate your classroom experience into your CBL Experience. You will build on your cultural and contextual knowledge of children’s learning through real-world opportunities to apply your knowledge and skills in early learning settings.

Our students participate in two types of experiential learning:

  • Community-Based Learning Experience : Weekly time spent engaging with young children through your work or volunteering in an early learning setting is required for many courses.
  • Applied assignments: Examples of applied assignments include videos of your practice, environment or child observations, case studies, and an interview with a professional or parent. These may be completed at your Community-Based Learning Experience site.

Already working or volunteering with children in an early learning setting? You can complete the community-based learning experience at your current job! If you need support finding a setting, our CBL coordinator will help you find a place to do your community-based learning.

It will take a minimum of 7 quarters to complete the program. To graduate from the University of Washington, you must have a minimum of 180 quarterly credits. How long it takes to graduate depends on a number of factors, including how many credits you are transferring in with and how many credits you take per quarter as an ECE student.

  • The ECE program’s Community-Based Learning requirement is to work or volunteer for at least 3-5 hours per week at a formal early learning setting that serves children ages birth-8, and allows you to observe, enact practices, and occasionally film yourself interacting with at least 3-5 children. Examples include Head Start, ECEAP, childcare center, family childcare center, elementary school, etc. Do you currently work or volunteer in a setting that meets this criteria? If so, briefly describe the setting and your role. If not, are you willing and able to volunteer in this kind of setting for 3-5 hours per week while you are a student in the program? Briefly describe your ideal volunteer setting. Support is available to help you find a site.

You will be notified some time between June and August. Applicants who submit before the priority deadline (April 1) will be notified first.

In general, you should be able to transfer college-level academic credits for general education courses (described on the UW's Undergraduate Advising General Education page) and early childhood and education-related credits.

For more information about UW’s transfer requirements, including notable restrictions on transfer credit, please visit the UW Transfer Credit Policies page.

To graduate from the University of Washington, you must have a minimum of 180 quarterly credits completed. Transfer students are encouraged to take courses that will transfer and count towards UW’s general education credits.

Please note: the majority of your ECE major coursework must be completed within our program. Most EDUC/ECE courses that transfer will count towards your general education requirements or general electives.

Costs and funding

The online ECE program is a self-sustaining, fee-based program. Course fees are charged on a per-credit basis and are the same for Washington residents and non-residents. Our course fees are less than, or comparable to, many similar programs in Washington state. The current estimated cost is:

  • $231 per credit
  • The total cost to complete varies based on transfer credits

Additional UW fees (registration, technology, etc) are not included in this estimate.

It is highly recommended that students in the program complete the Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) application. These applications are necessary for various forms of financial aid, including scholarships and loans. Because ECE is a fee-based program, students are not eligible for tuition exemptions or university grants, such as the Husky Promise. For more details, please visit the fee-based programs page on the Office of Student Financial Aid website.

The Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards offers information and resources about student scholarship opportunities and mentors students through the various application processes.

Students may qualify for specific scholarships and other financial aid that are tied to their background or prospective career field, including the opportunities below.

The Early Learning Equity (ELE) Scholarship, made possible by an extremely generous gift from the Ballmer Group, covers a student’s unmet financial need, including the cost of attendance for Washington state residents. The scholarship is available to newly enrolled ECE students, or those returning  to ECE after one or more years away.

Through this one application, undergraduate students can apply for multiple scholarships worth between $900 - $5,000.

The Zesbaugh and Anderson-Olsen Scholarships generously supports undergraduate students in financial need who are committed to a career as an educator. Applicants should be pursuing a career in P-12 teaching, education policy, higher education, school counseling, social services, or a myriad of other education fields.

Child Care Aware of Washington (Early Achievers) is for early learning professionals working at an Early Achievers enrolled program. The Bachelor’s Degree Pathways Scholarships are contract based for 12 months, and include BA completion, DTA/Pre-BA and the Montessori Credential.

The Martin Achievement Scholarship and Martin Honors Scholarship are available for Washington community college students and graduates interested in obtaining bachelor's degrees from the University of Washington.

Students based in Washington state can also apply for scholarships and other financial aid earmarked for residents of this state. There are number of sites that offer information about these kinds of programs, including:

Transforming inequitable systems

Our curriculum is rooted in the belief that all young children and their families have the right to equitable learning and development opportunities in a just and culturally-thriving society. ECE students reflect on their identities and how decisions we make every day in and outside of the classroom are influenced by larger power systems. Assignments and cohort discussions encourage critical thinking about early learning, equity, and community.

If your goal is to teach middle or high school, the ECE program is not a good fit and we encourage you to check out one of our other undergraduate majors.

No. Because you are admitted directly to the ECE major, you can only pursue the ECE major while you are enrolled at the University of Washington.

The ECE program is fully online. While you may be able to take occasional on-campus classes, options are extremely limited. If you prefer an on-campus experience, we recommend the Early Childhood & Family Studies: Teaching & Learning program.

We are here to help! We offer info sessions and individual pre-admission advising. Schedule a virtual advising appointment.

Yes! If you work in an early learning setting with children (birth to age 8), it is likely that this will count as your CBL weekly hours. If you don’t work with young children, the CBL coordinator is available to support you to find a CBL placement.

You can access coursework on your own schedule and complete the majority of your work on the weekends. There are flexible options for occasional synchronous small group sessions and meetings with staff and faculty.

Yes!  If you have already completed or will complete a bachelor’s or graduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university prior to enrolling at UW, you are considered a post-baccalaureate applicant. Please select “Early Care & Education (Online) - Post-Bac” option when you fill out the online application form.

As a “post-bac” you will only need to complete the ECE major coursework as your general education coursework will be taken care of with the credits from your original bachelor’s degree.

Did You Know?

According to a 2021 study from the peer-reviewed journal Child Development, children who receive high-quality early childhood education are more likely to graduate high school and college.

Why Should You Earn Your Degree in Early Childhood Education Online?

Earning an online degree in early childhood education (ECE) offers several advantages. The field of ECE is in high demand, making it a rewarding and fulfilling educator career path . Benefits of online early childhood education degrees can include:

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Online programs often have lower tuition fees — including in-state rates for out-of-state learners at public institutions — and eliminate commuting or relocation expenses.
  • Flexibility: Online early childhood education programs let enrollees access course materials and lectures from home. Asynchronous courses often provide more flexible schedules that let students balance their degree with other commitments.
  • Accelerated or Self-Paced Options: Some online programs offer accelerated formats or self-paced learning, enabling learners to complete their degree at their own pace.
  • Access to More Schools: Because online learning does not require relocation, prospective students are not limited to institutions in their vicinity, providing a wider array of options for potential schools.
  • Practical Experience: Many online early childhood education programs allow learners to complete field work or practicum components in their area, ensuring these enrollees still receive valuable hands-on learning opportunities.

By earning an early childhood education degree online, individuals can acquire the skills and knowledge they need for careers in this field while enjoying the flexibility and affordability that online learning can offer.

What Do You Learn in an Online Early Childhood Education Program?

Online early childhood education programs typically award a bachelor of arts (BA) or bachelor of science (BS) degree. Specific coursework varies by school, but classes generally cover the following topics:

  • Child development and psychology
  • Classroom management strategies
  • Teaching methods and curriculum design
  • Language development

ECE online programs may also offer specializations or concentrations that let students focus their studies on specific topics. For example, ECE majors can specialize in early childhood special education or administration and leadership .

These programs often include fieldwork or practicum experiences to provide hands-on learning. Enrollees observe and lead educational experiences in early childhood settings under the guidance of experienced professionals.

Prospective learners should research individual programs to understand the specific courses, concentrations, and fieldwork requirements they offer to ensure the degree aligns with their goals.

What Should You Consider Before Choosing an Online ECE Program?

Before you enroll in an online early childhood education program, you need to make sure that it fits your needs. The following factors will help you choose a quality program that aligns with your career aspirations and provides a solid foundation for a rewarding, impactful career in education:

Accreditation

Confirm that all schools on your list are institutionally accredited , which signifies they meet established standards of academic quality.

Additionally, programmatic accreditation from relevant organizations like the National Association for the Education of Young Children , the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation , or the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation demonstrates that an ECE program adequately prepares enrollees for educator careers.

Learning Experience

Check that the program’s format aligns with your learning style and schedule. Some programs offer synchronous courses, which require students to log on at specific times to participate in virtual class sessions. Other courses use asynchronous learning, which typically allows learners to engage with course materials on a more flexible schedule. Asynchronous courses may be ideal for enrollees who work full time or have family obligations.

Additionally, ensure any prospective program provides ample opportunities for hands-on learning , such as fieldwork or practicum experiences. These opportunities are essential for developing your teaching skills.

Specialization Options

Exploring specialization options is crucial in aligning your program with your career goals and interests. Look for programs that offer coursework or specializations in specific subfields of ECE, such as special education, infant/toddler education, or curriculum development. Having the opportunity to delve deeper into your chosen area of interest can enhance your expertise and make your skills more marketable.

Licensure vs. Non-Licensure Track

Decide whether you want a licensure or non-licensure track program. Licensure track programs are designed to prepare graduates for teacher licensure or certification — typically required for teachers in public schools . Non-licensure track programs may be suitable if you’re interested in roles outside of traditional classroom teaching, such as educational administration, policy, or advocacy.

Frequently asked questions.

Early Childhood Studies Development and Education

How do you nurture cognitive abilities and critical thinking in little ones? This popular course looks at different models and theories of early childhood education for an all-round understanding of this important topic.

Early Childhood Special Needs Education

Children with special needs require approaches that align with their developmental ability and that take into consideration their circumstances. This course looks at creating an inclusive programme and how families can take a supportive role in their child’s education.

Project-based Learning in Early Childhood Education

PBL or project-based learning is an effective pedagogic method. The Reggio Emilia approach of ‘emergent’ and holistic education is unpacked and explained in a way that makes it easy to apply in the classroom where appropriate.

Early childhood education is considered to start at birth and continue until the child is about eight years old. This is generally the time of nursery, preschool or kindergarten up until about third grade or early primary or elementary school. It covers everything from developing gross and fine motor skills, physical or hand-eye co-ordination to numeracy, language skills and even emotional and social development. Parents and families cover many of these aspects (teaching a child to talk and walk, for example) but may not have the time, knowledge or resources to go further and teach a child to read, write, count, begin to think critically and so forth. This is where professional and trained ECE educators come in. Research shows that children who are part of ECE programmes can have better outcomes later in life as the stimulation they receive builds their cognitive, language and social skills.

Yes, there are many different philosophies when it comes to early childhood education although there may be overlap between them. Some of the most well-known are: Montessori, Reggio Emilia, play-based learning, Waldorf and cognitive-based learning. We have free online courses in some of these approaches - be sure to return to this page often as we constantly add to our course selection and there may be new options that interest you later.

Montessori Teaching - Fundamental Concepts and Principles

One of our most popular ECE options, this course explains the observations that led Dr Maria Montessori to develop this teaching style that is used across the world. It helps children uncover their natural talents and interests in an informal way and setting.

Preschool Education: The Reggio Emilia Approach

This philosophy centres the child and allows them to take a self-guided approach to experiential learning in settings that favour relationships and connections. Enrol in this course to learn more and see if it will work for you.

Childcare and EYFS

A highly recommended course, EYFS stands for Early Years Foundation Stage, which covers birth to five years old in England. Its lessons, however, are universal and you will see how to bring out the best in very young children.

The State of Iowa’s public education system is considered among the best in the nation. The 327 local school districts serve more than 485,000 students in the PreK-12 levels. More than 38,000 teachers are at the frontlines of PreK-12 education, too, and their continuing success reflects the strong commitment of the state toward excellence in education. For the Class of 2021, the 90.2% graduation rate is solid proof of it.

The Hawkeye State is also known for its strong commitment to making it an excellent place for teachers. For one thing, Iowa offers a free training program on the science of reading for all elementary school teachers. The goal is to raise the standards of literacy among elementary school students.

All teachers in Iowa must also pass the Foundations of Reading assessment, a nationally recognized test. This isn’t just another training program – it ensures literacy competency among teachers. When competent teachers are at the helm of education, students benefit in many ways.

For another thing, Governor Reynolds proposed a substantial increase in teachers’ pay. According to her proposal, the starting pay for teachers should increase by 50% (i.e., up to $50,000 per year). While it’s a $96 million investment, it’s intended to recruit and retain the best teachers. Indeed, Iowa wants to see a strong message that its teachers and educators are valuable in its growth.

The State of Iowa was also among the early adopters of the universal Education Savings (ESA) program when it passed the Students First Act in January 2023. In it, Iowa families have more choices in their children’s education.

The bottom line: Now is the best time to earn your bachelor’s degree in education to start your teaching career in the Hawkeye State. Here’s what you need to know to get started.

Requirements for Teaching Licensure in Iowa

The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE) oversees the teaching licensure process and procedures. Note that it’s under the umbrella of the Iowa Department of Education. The BOEE also oversees the rights, responsibilities, and ethics of education practitioners.

The primary teacher licensure requirements are:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Appropriate completion of teacher program requirements, including coursework and clinical experiences

Aspiring teachers can choose from two licensure pathways:

  • Traditional pathway
  • Alternative pathway

For the traditional pathway, the BOEE maintains a list of colleges and universities with approved teacher preparation programs. Most offer online programs that best fit working professionals, non-traditional students, and traditional students who want the benefits of online learning. In this pathway, students attend online classes, learn content knowledge and teaching methods, and engage in student teaching for at least 14 weeks.

The alternative pathway is for professionals with a teaching-related degree. Applicants complete 12-18 credits in teaching pedagogy and work in a high school setting with an intern license. Best Online CNA Programs Of 2024

For anyone who wants to enter the healthcare field, becoming a certified nursing assistant (CNA) is a practical option worth considering. It opens the door to a nursing career without requiring a college degree or a major commitment of time and money.

Certified nursing assistants provide patient care in hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities, usually under the supervision of a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or registered nurse (RN) . A CNA helps patients with basic functions including bathing and dressing, medication and movement. Consequently, it’s a job that will appeal to anyone drawn to a caregiver role, with all the rewards and the demands that caregiving entails. CNAs might also assist with basic administrative tasks such as patient documentation.

It’s possible to attain this entry-level position within just a few weeks—by taking a state-approved CNA certification course and then sitting for your state’s CNA competency exam. Moreover, online CNA courses are now available that allow trainees to enjoy the convenience and lower cost of remote learning while they prepare for a CNA career.

In the following article, we present a handful of standout online CNA programs from around the country, describe how they work and discuss what you can expect from each. Our list is not intended to be comprehensive; we offer it as a ranking based solely on the writer’s own research rather than as a more formal ranking supported by a methodology and objective data.

Key Takeaways

Should you pursue an online cna course, 6 online cna class options, frequently asked questions (faqs) about online cna classes.

  • You can earn a CNA certification in one to three months, provided you’re ready to work hard in that period.
  • The starting point for any CNA career is determining your home state’s specific certification requirements. You can find those through your state’s health department or nursing board.
  • CNA is a “foot in the door” to the healthcare field that seldom requires more than a high school diploma (or the equivalent) as a prerequisite.

Degree Finder

For every learner, deciding whether to earn a CNA certification online will depend in part on factors such as their individual learning style and schedule—not to mention the specific requirements for CNA certifications in their home state. However, some major benefits of online CNA courses include the following:

  • CNA certification is a point of entry into the healthcare field that can be obtained with a modest amount of time and money.
  • Certified nursing assistant is a solid foundation from which you can rise higher in the nursing profession and one that will allow you to decide how you might want to specialize later in your career.
  • CNAs enjoy a relative degree of job security. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts well over 200,000 openings for nursing assistants between 2022 and 2032—and given the documented aging of the U.S. population, it’s reasonable to assume that long-term care facilities and similar institutions will need CNAs to meet their staffing requirements.
  • An online CNA course offers the flexibility and convenience of studying at your own pace and on your own schedule, which can be critical if you’re juggling other commitments such as a job or family.

It’s important to clarify at the outset that online CNA programs themselves don’t result in certification. Instead, they provide the training that enables you to take and pass the state competency exam. Programs are typically offered through community colleges, along with hospitals and vocational schools.

Finally, remember that “online” in this context refers to hybrid programs in which your coursework (also known as the theory component of CNA training) is conducted online but the equally important clinical work is done in person at a licensed healthcare facility. To receive accreditation and state approval, a proper CNA program must include this hands-on training.

Another selling point for Allegiance’s online CNA course, touted on its website and mentioned by program alumni in their Yelp reviews, is that students have access to real-world training materials—quizzes, practice questions, etc.—related to the California Department of Public Health license exam that they’ll take after completing the course.

Program Title: Skills Certificate in Nurse Aide

State Fair Community College

$2,188 tuition (for Missouri residents)

High school diploma or GED

Consisting of 16.5 credit hours total, the Skills Certificate in Nurse Aide course at Missouri’s State Fair Community College is the foundation of a unique “stackable certificates” program that continues with a longer professional certificate (31.5 credit hours) and then a full associate degree program (61.5 credit hours).

A special feature of State Fair’s Skills Certificate training is that it simultaneously prepares each student to become a CNA and a certified medication technician (CMT), boosting employability as they move on to the professional certificate. Online, hybrid and in-person options are available for Skills Certificate coursework, which is followed by in-person clinical work at a long-term care facility.

Program Title: Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program

University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV)

High school diploma or equivalent

The Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program at UNLV comprises 43 hours of theory classes, 21 hours of lab work and 32 clinical hours: 96 hours in total, which can be completed in four weeks. Fundamentals covered include basic nursing and personal care skills, emergency procedures and infection control, among other topics. As in the other programs discussed on this page, the curriculum is delivered via a hybrid format that blends online learning with in-person training.

Trainees in the UNLV program earn their clinical hours at skilled nursing facilities, long-term acute care hospitals and other healthcare institutions in the greater Las Vegas–Henderson region. After clinical instruction, students are expected to be ready to sit for the Nevada State Board of Nursing (NSBN) exam.

What is a CNA?

Certified nursing assistants are frequently the primary caregivers for patients who need basic assistance. They help patients with functions such as bathing and dressing, medication and movement. CNAs provide patient care in hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities, usually under the supervision of a nurse.

What is CNA certification?

Those who have completed their CNA training must pass an examination to become certified. Each state has its own requirements; however, you should expect a written or oral portion, plus a clinical skills exam that tests your skills as a CNA.

What's the fastest I can become a CNA?

Full-time CNA programs can be completed in 12 weeks or less, and special accelerated programs can get you working as a CNA in as little as six weeks. Becoming a CNA can be a relatively quick process compared to other healthcare professions.

Find a state-approved CNA training program, meaning it’s accredited and meets your state’s requirements. After you finish your training and pass the competency exam, apply for certification through your state’s health department or nursing board. Official certification will get you added to your state’s CNA registry, and you can then begin to apply for CNA positions in a variety of healthcare facilities.

How do I get a CNA license?

To earn a CNA license, begin by researching your state’s requirements for CNA certifications via the state health department or nursing board. Then, find a state-approved CNA training program. Divided between classroom instruction and clinical practice under the supervision of a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or a registered nurse (RN), training programs are usually offered through community colleges, vocational schools or hospitals and last between four and 12 weeks.

After training, you need to pass the CNA competency exam, which includes both a written test covering theoretical knowledge and a practical skills test that requires you to perform specific nursing tasks in a simulated clinical environment.

Once you’ve passed the competency exam, apply to your state’s nursing board or health department for CNA certification. The certification process usually requires a background check as well as an application fee. Upon certification, you are now a licensed CNA and will be listed on your state’s CNA registry. Remember that you’ll have to renew your certification periodically, typically every two years.

How much does a CNA make?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of mid-2023, the median annual wage for certified nursing assistants was $38,200—meaning half the CNAs in the U.S. earned more than $38,200 and half earned less. The highest 10% of CNA salaries exceeded $48,780 and the lowest 10% were less than $30,020.

CNA salaries can differ widely depending on the state you live in, whether you work in a primarily rural or urban area and the kind of healthcare facility you work in (whether it’s a private or public hospital, for instance, or an assisted living facility).
