The iGovPhil Project officially adopts the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) as the accessibility standard for all its related web development and services. WCAG 2.0 is also an international standard, ISO 40500. This certifies it as a stable and referenceable technical standard.

WCAG 2.0 contains 12 guidelines organized under 4 principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust (POUR for short). There are testable success criteria for each guideline. Compliance to these criteria is measured in three levels: A, AA, or AAA. A guide to understanding and implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 is available at: https://www.w3.org/TR/UNDERSTANDING-WCAG20/

All iGovPhil Project services and content are currently moving towards WCAG Level A compliance. Work is being done to make the system fully compliant with this level.

Apply For Housing

Getting started on your housing application.

All students are eligible for on-campus housing. The housing application will ask you questions about yourself and your living and dining preferences to help determine your best fit for on-campus housing.

Ready to apply? Let's get started.

What type of student are you?

  • First Year 202 4
  • Winter & Spring 2024
  • Second Year And Above 2024
  • Transfer 2024
  • Graduate 2024

1. Get admitted to Oregon State

Submit your application.

Complete and submit your application for admission to Oregon State.

For first-year students moving to OSU in fall 2024: The new student housing application opens February 13, 2024, at 2 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

Register your ONID account

Once you have been admitted (including students enrolled in the Degree Partnership Program and Educational Opportunities Program ) you’ll receive an OSU Network ID (ONID) account. Your ONID serves as your Oregon State email address and as a log-in credential for university services.

Go to the ONID website to activate your account; select “Activate your ONID" and follow the instructions. Once you've activated it, remember to check your Oregon State ONID email throughout the year, as that's where we will send housing-related information and updates.

Learn about living on campus

Review Oregon State’s First-Year Experience Live-On Policy .

2. Research your options

Consider a specialized community.

Do you want to live in a Living-Learning Community or a Special Interest Community ? Does your major strongly encourage you to select a certain community?

Which halls fit your budget?

Take a look at our room and dining rates.

What are your living and dining preferences?

What room types or bathroom styles are you looking for? Explore your options . (Be aware that some options, such as single rooms, have very limited availability).

Which dining plan suits your needs?

3. Apply for housing

Log in and apply through the housing portal ..

Complete “part one” in the application: this part covers demographic and contact information along with housing preferences. The earlier you complete part one of the application, the better your chances are of receiving one of your top choices.

You can return to the application to update your answers later without affecting your part one completion date.

Students who apply for housing and sign their contract by May 31, 2024, and have paid their ATD, are eligible to select their own roommate in June. We will continue to accept housing applications after May 31, 2024, but later applicants will not be eligible for online roommate matching.

Pay your Advance Tuition Deposit  confirming your intent to enroll at Oregon State.

5. Sign your housing contract

Complete “part two” in the application: return to the housing portal to sign a 2024-2025 UHDS Room and Dining Contract beginning May 2, 2024 . You are required to sign a contract prior to being assigned a room. Make sure you understand your contract before you complete it.

If you are under 18 when you sign your contract, a parent/guardian signature is also required.

6. Find a roommate

Complete “part three” in the application: fill out the roommate questionnaire in the housing portal .

Oregon State offers an online roommate matching process that allows students to select their own roommate. Participating in roommate matching is optional. Our staff will match you with another student if you do not select your own roommate.

Make sure you understand how gender identity affects roommate matching.

To be eligible for online roommate matching, you must have:

  • submitted part one of the housing application by May 31, 2024
  • completed your housing contract by May 31, 2024
  • paid your ATD (unless you are ATD exempt or a Degree Partnership Program participant)

Online roommate matching will be available from June 1 at 2 p.m. to June 30, 2024.

7. Register for START orientation

Before you can receive a room assignment, you must register for a START orientation session . For incoming fall 2024 students, START registration begins in May 2024.

8. Room assignment

Room assignments will begin in late July 2024 and continue throughout the summer. Room assignments will be sent to students' Oregon State email addresses.

The date you receive your room assignment depends on the following:

  • Dates you completed parts one and two of the housing application.
  • Eligibility criteria for communities.
  • Completing all necessary steps to confirm attendance at Oregon State  including  START registration .
  • Graduate Student
  • Second Year and Above Students
  • Transfer Student
  • Winter and Spring Arrivals

Room Selection 2024 FAQ

Room selection provides students the opportunity to select their roommate(s) as well as their room/apartment for the upcoming academic year.

Who Can Participate? Link

To participate you must be an eligible candidate and complete the housing contract for room selection by the deadline :

(1) Eligible Candidates:

  • Current undergraduate students living on-campus.
  • Current Syracuse Abroad students who lived on-campus during the Fall 2023 semester.
  • Current LA, DC, or NYC program students who lived on-campus during the Fall 2023 semester.
  • May be indicated as future roommates by students who have not fulfilled their 2-year housing requirement.
  • May ONLY be pulled in as roommates in designated locations.
  • May be included as future roommates in any undergraduate housing locations.

(2) Submit the Housing Contract for Room Selection (available on the Housing Portal beginning February 6):

  • Deadline: March 13 by 5 pm
  • March 14 through March 29: Contract remains live, but students who missed the March 13 deadline will not be able to fully participate in room selection and will not be eligible for the LLC round or the random roommate process.
  • March 29: Room selection closes. Students instead need to apply using the Returning Student application process beginning in mid-April. Students can no longer self-select the room assignments and are subject to the remaining spaces available.

(3) You must not have a current on-campus assignment:

  • Once you have a room assigned, whether submitted by you or your matched roommate(s), your participation in Room Selection ends.

How Do I Participate? Link

Room Selection takes place within the housing portal. The housing portal is accessed through MySlice, then Student Resources, and finally ‘Housing and Meal Plans’. While Room Selection is ongoing, you will see the ‘Room Selection’ menu option on the left-navigation menu.

When Do I Participate? Link

Selection times within each round of room selection are randomly assigned and posted to the housing portal the business day prior to the selection round start date. You will not be able to see your selection time sooner than when it is posted.

Times are completely random and are not able to be changed once generated. Students who complete the housing contract after the campus-wide time allocation has been completed will receive an appointment time at the end of the round. Make certain to complete your housing contract by the deadline to ensure your information is received on time!

  • March 19 – Appointments posted  and Roommate Selection opens
  • March 20 – Room Selection Process
  • March 22 – Appointments posted and Roommate Selection opens
  • March 25 through March 29 – Room Selection Process (appointment determines day/time access is granted by student)

How Do I Select A Roommate? Link

Utilize My College Roomie (MCR) as a resource to help locate compatible roommates. (Note: If you already know who you plan to live with you can skip this step!)

Once you know your roommate plans are in place, you will need to request/confirm one another within the Housing Portal (not within MCR). The Roommate Selection process access becomes prior to the selection round start date (see schedule above). It remains open throughout Room Selection in case changes to roommate groups need to be made.

Please review the provided visual guide on how to select/confirm your roommate within the Housing Portal.

Important Roommate Group Information

  • Under the Room Selection menu option in the Housing Portal, choose ‘Select Roommates’ and then select the Fall 2024 term. (Room Selection menu is enabled starting March 19)
  • Enter the syr.edu email address of your roommate(s) and click search.
  • You will only be able to select roommates that are part of the Room Selection Round you are participating in.
  • Once you locate your roommate(s) via the portal, click Request Roommate. They will receive an email indicating you requested them with instructions on how to confirm the request.
  • The names of roommates you have selected as well as the status of the request are displayed within the Roommate Requests section.
  • You can use the ellipsis (three dots) next to the name of your requested roommate to open the action menu. From here you can email the student or remove the request.
  • If someone requests you as a roommate you will see the request under the Pending Roommate Requests section. Click the ellipsis (three dots) next to the name to open the action menu. From here you can accept/add or remove/decline the request, or email the student.
  • Once you and your roommates have confirmed one another, you are a roommate group.
  • Example: If your roommate group size is 4 students (yourself plus three roommates), you will have three matched roommates listed on the portal.
  • Your roommates must all also have three matched roommates listed.
  • If during room selection, the available rooms do not match your roommate group, you will need to adjust your group to fit within another available space. (e.g., If the plan was to room in a 4-person suite and none are available, your group should have a contingency plan in place to know how you would split the group into two double groupings.
  • The roommate selection guide provides visual examples of the screens you will encounter during the roommate selection process.

How Do Appointments Work? Link

Each student is given their own selection date and time. The times are randomly generated and are not able to be changed once assigned.

How Do I Select A Room? Link

Make sure that you meet all three criteria outlined above to participate (eligible candidate, housing contract submitted by deadline, and no current room assignment)

Once your appointment time starts you will have access to selection until the end of the round, or until you are assigned to a room by you or your roommate, whichever comes first. If you are an LLC Round student and you do not select during that round, you will be included in the Campus-Wide round.

Please review the provided visual guide on how to select your room within the Housing Portal.

Important Room Selection Information

  • They are not required to be the one that selects but they will have access first which may mean access to more options for the group.
  • Roommate groups should talk about their plan for room selection so all members are clear about selection.
  • Once any member of the group selects and confirms the selection, the assignment is final for all students in that group, and access to room selection is removed.
  • Your group should discuss and prioritize a list of room options (and room type options) before your selection to make searching for available rooms easier.
  • A list of rooms included in each room selection round will be made available on our website but is subject to change.
  • It is likely your first choice may not be available. As a group, discuss backup plans that work for everyone so no one is left out.

The Room Selection Process:

  • Under the Room Selection menu option in the housing portal, choose ‘Select a Room’. (Room Selection menu is enabled starting March 19)
  • If you do not see available rooms it is because there are none remaining for your group size. You may need to adjust the size of your group (adding or removing roommates) for rooms to become available.
  • The list is in alpha order by residence hall (or by street for south campus apts.) followed by the room within the hall (or building & apartment number for south campus apts.).
  • Roommate groups should discuss bedroom arrangements ahead of the group’s selection time. Read on for additional information about South Campus bedroom layouts.
  • Once clicked, your selection is final and you are done with the room selection process.
  • All members of the roommate group will receive a system email notification of their assignment.
  • Your home screen will display your assignment along with your room/apartment number, bed assignment, and roommate(s) name(s).
  • The room selection guide provides visual examples of the screens you will encounter during the roommate selection process.

How to Self-Assign

1. Login to   My Housing  and select the Self-Assign tab on the gold navigation bar, then choose the correct Application term.

2. View the Room List: You can narrow your room search on the Room List step by Room Type, Area, Building, and Rooms. You will only be able to see buildings/rooms in which you are eligible to live for that application term.

  • If you have an "accepted" roommate(s), the student with the earliest room selection time slot should use their time slot to self-assign and place any accepted roommates in the room also. Only roommates who accepted their group invitation will be pulled into that room.
  • If you do not have a confirmed roommate, please search for an open room in an apartment where other students have been assigned. Please do not select a room in an empty apartment unless there are no other options.

3. ADD TO CART  the room you want for yourself.

4. Select a bed for yourself.

5. Click  ASSIGN BEDS .

Note: You can use Room Swap to make changes to your room assignment.

Please Note

  • The  My Housing  portal will experience a high volume of traffic when self-assign opens. Rather than use that system to explore your room options, we recommend you visit the Available Rooms page (linked in the email with your time slot information) until closer to your time slot.
  • First-year students must acknowledge the requirements of choosing an apartment prior to completing the self-assign process.
  • Once you have an assignment, you can change that room assignment and reassign to another room until self-assign is closed. You may review your assignment in  your application on the Room and Roommate Step.
  • Georgia Institute of Technology Housing reserves the right to reassign students.
  • If you fail to self-assign by the designated time, Housing & Residence Life will make your room assignment based on availability.

Secure Your Room

Rising second, third, fourth-year, and graduate students can apply for and self-select their housing. To be eligible to participate in our room selection process, students must meet our Housing Application deadlines . Students who do not meet these deadlines will be randomly assigned based on available spaces!

Submit Your Housing Application

You must first  submit a housing application in your Housing Portal to participate in housing selection.

If you have any questions, email [email protected] .

Decorative

Step-By-Step

Take time to review this step-by-step guide to applying for housing.

Step 1: Complete the Housing Application

The first step you must take is to complete your housing application in your Housing Portal. You will not be able to process until we receive your Housing Application.

Step 2: Decide Who to Live With

You can either apply as an individual or a group of people. If you don't want to select your room individually, consider grabbing some friends you want to room with and form a group! One person must be designated as the group leader to create a group. This individual will ultimately be responsible for selecting a housing assignment for the group.

The group leader will also make a name for their group!

Watch the video below for a demonstration of this step.

Step 3: Confirm Roommate Groups (if applicable)

Group Leaders are responsible for confirming each member of their roommate group and ensuring that everyone has completed their Housing Application. They are able to do so in their Housing Portal. It's important to know that if an individual has not completed their Housing Application by the roommate group deadline, they will be removed from the group.

Rooms are limited and are on first-come basis!

We recognize that roommate groups of 4, 5, or 6 people may be created, but we will not be able to accommodate every group. To be transparent, we have:

  • 14 six-person units
  • 19 five-person units
  • 202 four-person units

Groups will only be able to select rooms that they will completely occupy. For example, a four-person group will not be able to select a five or six-person unit.  We recommend creating smaller sub-groups in case your option is no longer available when it's time for you to self-select.

The following are breakdowns for each residential community:

  • 76 four-person suites
  • 4 five-person apartments
  • 47 four-person suites
  • 24 four-person apartments
  • 9  six-person suites
  • 5  six-person apartments
  • 14  five-person suites
  • 1  five-person apartment
  • 49  four-person suites
  • 6  four-person apartments

Step 4: Room Selection Date & Time

All students eligible to participate in room selection will receive an email that confirms their room selection date and time. Group Leaders will receive this information for their group and will be responsible for using the Housing Portal to make a selection for their group.

Step 5: Select a Housing Assignment

At their designated time, an individual or group leader can select a housing assignment through their Housing Portal.

If a student is unable to select a space, that means the assignment is no longer available. If that occurs, students are placed on a waitlist for a housing assignment. Students will be prioritized based on considering when they completed their housing application, with those who submitted earlier being placed first. Groups may not be able to be placed together if this occurs.

Our team will notify students when a space becomes available and share a housing assignment as well as keep them updated on the status of their application.

Room selection 2024 - is here.

UPDATE: May 16, 2024

If you were on the Room Selection Interest List and received a contract offer (and completed it by the stated deadline), please review the below details for what's next:

May 16:   Email sent with the lottery time and roommate PIN code.

May 17 :  If needed, lottery date/time and roommate PIN code available in the Housing Portal.

May 20:   Vacancy Viewer will be available in the Housing Portal.

May 23-24:   Room Selection Interest List Self-Select Process.  Students will need to select from available space by May 24, 2024 at 11:59PM (PST).

May 29:  Additional communication for those still on the Room Selection Interest List will go out as we continue to actively work on making offers.

UPDATE:  April 29, 2024

Room Selection ended on Friday, April 25th with our last community selecting into space!

If you did not select space on your designated Room Selection day (April 16 - April 25), then you will be assigned to a remaining available space.  Please be on the look out for an email this week.

What's Next?   See below for additional details:

April 29-May 6:   Limited opportunity for students interested in a room change (visit the Housing Portal) for the following reasons:

  • I want a triple or mini double for financial reasons.
  • Gendered housing preference concern (EX: Selected into male identified housing, but more comfortable in female identified housing)
  • Requested room swaps within same apartment/suite (EX: Group leader assigned folks incorrectly within the apartment).

ALL other room change interests (want a single or double room, etc.) will be available in Fall 2024.

  • Review dining plan options.
  • Students with an assignment at Pepper Canyon East/Matthews, Rita Atkinson Residences or Pepper Canyon West have the option to select the "No Dining Plan" option.
  • Last change to adjust your dining plan will open during MyRoomAssignent in August.

Room Selection is for continuing students with a housing guarantee to participate in the  housing process for the 2024-25 academic year.  Students with a housing guarantee are notified via email beginning February 2 of their status to participate and the steps needed to secure on-campus housing for the next academic year.

Continuing students with no-guarantee for housing also receive an email about available options. We  normally can accommodate a small number of upper-division students each year as we receive contract cancellations, and we’d love to see if you are interested in coming back for 2024-25.  Students can express interest and will be updated at a later date and time if there are available spaces.

We will continue to make updates to our website as the process moves forward. Please check your UC San Diego email account for reminders.  Should you have a question, please reach out to us at:

Room Assignments/Changes

A photo of a beautifully-decorated student room in Ambler Johnston Hall.

It is the goal of Housing Services that most students select their own assignments. Priority for room assignment is determined by contract receipt order, with returning students selecting rooms in the spring term prior to new student assignments occurring over the summer.

There are some exceptions to student self-selection. Members of the Corps of Cadets, Oak Lane communities, and student athletes housed in CID will be assigned by their respective organizations; students who fall near the end of the contract receipt order, or those who fail to self-select by stated deadlines, may be placed by Housing Services staff. Additionally, students with housing accommodations that limit what buildings or room types will best support their accommodations are typically manually assigned by Housing Services staff. Although infrequent, Housing Services reserves the right to reassign any student if necessary.

"Swapping" Room Assignments before Occupancy

Occasionally two students want to "swap" room assignments. If we hear from the two students approving such an assignments change, we will attempt the move. We must hear directly from the students involved in the swap - we will not move someone out of a space because you "think they won't mind." Students must send written notice from their @vt.edu email address giving approval of such a switch, specifying what they are agreeing to do(including buildings and room numbers).

Administrative Reassingment before Occupancy

Assignments may be changed at the discretion of the housing office. While we attempt to minimize such changes, each year a small number of changes must be made in response to occupancy concerns.

Room Change Information

The Room Change Process can be engaged by students through the StarRez Portal . Once in the portal, select Online Forms and follow the on-screen instructions for Room Change Requests.

If a room change is being considered due to a conflict with roommate/suitemates, it is the expectation that the residents have started with direct communication to attempt to resolve the concern. This resolution can be supported by the student leader or house supervisor who are trained in communication and conflict mediation. These student staff members are also supported by RWB professionals who may either support or directly address the situation. A room change should not be seen as the default solution to a conflict, but rather a step in the resolution when lower-level solutions have been considered.

How to Complete Your Room Change

If your room change is approved, follow the steps below:

  • Complete the move within 72 hours.
  • Check out of your old room by submitting an express check-out form through the StarRez Portal. If you wish to schedule an in-person check-out, please email [email protected] to do so.
  • Failure to complete the move by the deadline will result in improper checkout charges and loss of the right to contest damage assessments made by staff.
  • Student Telecommunications (CNS), Residential Mail Services, and Hokie Passport Services will be notified of your change.

Room Assignment and Selection

The University of Chicago is a residential campus for college students, and all entering first-year students are required to live in on-campus housing for their first two academic years. Transfer students are required to live in housing for their first academic year at UChicago.  Visit Housing & Residence Life  for more detailed information about housing.

A mix of personalities & interests

Room assignments in the Houses are intentionally made so that each House includes a cross section of the University population, with students from various states and countries who have diverse academic and extracurricular interests.

Consider your preferences

Admitted students have the opportunity to share preferences on their housing application that are considered during the housing assignment process. Among the factors to consider are whether you prefer living alone or with a roommate and what habits would be most important to you in a roommate.

Single-sex options

All of the Houses are co-ed, but a few have single-sex floors. If it is important for you to live on an all-male or all-female floor, you can make your preference known on your housing application.

Open housing

Housing & Residence Life at the University of Chicago offers a gender-neutral housing option to students of all class years, allowing increased choice in selecting roommates, regardless of gender. All multi-occupancy spaces, with the exception of those that are part of a single-sex floor or wing, may be occupied by students who prefer open housing accommodations.

Community Room Selection

During Community Room Selection, students will be able to select an on-campus room for themselves and members in their roommate group from residences across campus. The process is divided into gender-neutral and single-gender selection. Both follow the same steps, but occur on different dates.

To participate in gender-neutral Community Room Selection you must have declared your intent to participate in gender-neutral housing earlier in the application and have a multi-gender group.

Keep in mind:

  • Group members must have declared their intent to participate in gender-neutral housing in order to be assigned during gender-neutral Community Room Selection.
  • All spaces in gender-neutral rooms must be filled with group members of the student selecting.  There can be no vacancies remaining when your selection time is complete, and must result in a multi-gender unit.

Area Selection

In this step you will be able to select residences by campus area. Check  floor plans  for more detailed information.

Community Area Select

A list of all available rooms in the campus area previously selected will appear on this step. You can narrow down your search by room type and residence location.  Select the room(s) that you will be assigning to yourself and any potential roommates from your group .

For gender-neutral Community Room Selection you will see a select number of rooms.

If at any time you wish to go back, click the “Go Back” button at the bottom of the page.

CRC Room List

On this page you have the ability to assign yourself and members of your group to the room(s) previously selected. You will have  5 minutes  to make assignments, during which time your chosen room will be reserved and appear unavailable to other students.

  • You do not have to fill all spaces chosen in the previous step unless you are participating in gender-neutral Community Room Selection.
  • If you receive an error when assigning a group member to a room it is because they do not meet the   requirements   to be in that room  (i.e., Specialty Communities, Student Villages apartment styles, and Living-Learning Communities).

If at any time you wish to go back, click the “Go Back” button at the bottom of the page.

CRC Assign Beds part 1

This is the final step of the room selection process. Here you will be able to view where you have assigned yourself and any group members.

To confirm the assignment(s) and complete the process, select “Confirm Assignment(s).” You will not be able to return and make any other assignments after this step.

If you’re not satisfied with the assignment(s), please select “Go Back.”

After you confirm the assignment(s), you will see where you and any group members have been assigned for the next academic year.

Dodgers lefty James Paxton designated for assignment as River Ryan makes his major league debut

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers made a surprising change to their evolving rotation Monday.

James Paxton was designated for assignment to make room for River Ryan on the 40-man roster. Ryan made his major league debut Monday night against the San Francisco Giants, becoming the 14th pitcher to start for the Dodgers this season.

Paxton was tied with Gavin Stone and Tyler Glasnow for most starts on the team with 18. The veteran left-hander was 8-2 with a 4.43 ERA.

The 35-year-old Paxton signed a $7 million, one-year contract during the offseason. He allowed two runs over five innings in Sunday’s 9-6 victory against the Boston Red Sox.

Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said with the return of Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw from injuries this week along with some young arms the Dodgers want to look at, it was tough finding a fit for Paxton the rest of the way.

“It was a difficult decision. He handled it like a pro,” Roberts said. “We feel good about the starting staff going forward.”

Glasnow, who went on the injured list July 9 due to back tightness, will be activated and start on Wednesday. Kershaw is scheduled to make his first start of the season Thursday in the series finale after working his way back from offseason shoulder surgery.

Image

Even with the returns of Glasnow and Kershaw, the Dodgers are still missing Walker Buehler (right hip inflammation) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto (right rotator cuff).

Buehler will throw a bullpen Tuesday before making a couple of minor league rehab starts. Yamamoto isn’t expected back until possibly late August.

Justin Wrobleski and Landon Knack are two of the younger pitchers the Dodgers want to see more. Knack will start Tuesday night.

With the July 30 deadline looming, the Dodgers are likely to find a trade partner for Paxton. Los Angeles has seven days to trade, release or send him outright to the minors — an assignment he would have the right to decline in favor of free agency.

Roberts’ bigger concern might be with the bullpen. Roberts indicated he is likely to go with a closer-by-committee approach due to Evan Phillips’ recent struggles.

Phillips has allowed 10 runs (nine earned) in his last eight appearances and has an 11.05 ERA since June 30. He gave up three runs in one-third of an inning on Sunday against Boston.

“For me, the command is just a little bit off. Over the past couple weeks, he was one pitch away from having a good outing,” Roberts said about Phillips. “We need him to be good, and it’s our job to get him back to being who he is.”

Donald Trump spoke at his first rally in Pennsylvania since the attempt on his life in Butler on 13 July.

“As you know, this is my first rally since Butler,” Trump told the crowd in the indoor arena. “We’re going back to Butler, by the way.”

The former president took the stage in Harrisburg shortly after 7pm on Wednesday night and spoke for roughly 90 minutes.

He brought on stage the woman who operated the chart that Trump says saved his life during the assassination attempt. Trump turned his head to look at the chart when he was shot in the ear.

The former president shared an awkward embrace with the young woman and gave her a peck on the cheek, before describing her as “a computer genius”.

It had already been a wild day for the Trump campaign. Earlier, Trump appeared at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Chicago on Wednesday and shocked many in attendance by accusing his host of being “rude”, and questioning Kamala Harris ’s racial identity, while doubling down on conspiracy theories and even the phrase “Black jobs.”

People could be heard gasping at times, jeering at others, and laughing at some of the former president’s answers.

The Second Gentleman, Doug Emhoff, slammed Trump during a fundraiser in Maine for the former president’s comments about his wife’s racial identity.

“The insults, the BS, shows a lack of character—but it’s a distraction,” he added.

Trump attorney claims Harris doesn’t know where she comes from

After Trump’s controversial comments about Harris’s heritage earlier today, his attorney Alina Habba appeared to double down while speaking in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on Wednesday.

“Unlike you Kamala, I know who my roots are and where I come from,” she said.

Rudy Giuliani agrees to last-minute deal to end bankruptcy case, paying out $400k

Cash-strapped Rudy Giuliani has reached an agreement with his bankruptcy creditors on the conditions of his case dismissal, which requires the former New York City mayor to pay $400,000 in administrative expenses.

The deal was announced on Wednesday after Judge Sean Lane threw out the bankruptcy case earlier this month. But the disgraced ex-mayor is still on the hook to pay two defamed election workers , whom he owes $148m . He is also required to pay administrative fees for the case, which the former Trump lawyer had refused to pay despite it being a legal requirement for dismissal.

Donald Trump falsely suggests Kamala Harris misled voters about her race

Donald Trump falsely suggested Kamala Harris had misled voters about her race as the former president appeared before the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago in an interview that quickly turned hostile.

The Republican wrongly claimed that Ms Harris, the first Black woman and Asian American to serve as vice president, had in the past only highlighted her Indian heritage.

“I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black. So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?” Trump said while addressing the group’s annual convention.

Harris is the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, both immigrants to the US. As an undergraduate, Ms Harris attended Howard University, one of the nation’s most prominent historically Black colleges and universities, where she also pledged the historically Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha. As a US senator, Harris was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, supporting legislation to strengthen voting rights and to reform policing.

Trump has levelled a wide range of criticisms at Harris since she replaced president Joe Biden atop the likely Democratic ticket last week. Throughout his political career, the former president has repeatedly questioned the backgrounds of opponents who are racial minorities.

Michael Tyler, the communications director for Harris’ campaign, said in a statement that “the hostility Donald Trump showed on stage today is the same hostility he has shown throughout his life, throughout his term in office, and throughout his campaign for president as he seeks to regain power”.

“Trump lobbed personal attacks and insults at Black journalists the same way he did throughout his presidency – while he failed Black families and left the entire country digging out of the ditch he left us in,” Mr Tyler said. “Donald Trump has already proven he cannot unite America, so he attempts to divide us.”

Harris condemns ‘same old show of divisiveness’ after Trump questions her heritage at Black journalist event

Hours after former president Donald Trump questioned whether she was truly a Black woman, Vice President Kamala Harris slammed Trump’s racist remark as she spoke before a cheering crowd of members of a predominantly Black sorority in Houston, Texas.

Harris told sisters of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, inc — a member of the “Divine Nine” group of historically Black fraternities and sororities — that Trump’s remarks before the National Association of Black Journalists, in which he claimed that she had “all of a sudden she made a turn and ... became a Black person,” were “the same old show” of “divisiveness and disrespect” from the ex-president.

Trump’s comments came during a bizarre 30-minute sit-down at the journalism organization’s annual conference in Chicago moments after he told ABC’s Rachel Scott that he “didn’t know” that Harris “was Black.”

Mayor claims drone intercepted near Moscow

Russian air defense units allegedly intercepted a drone over the city of Elektrostal in Moscow Oblast, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported in a Telegram post on Nov. 19.

Sobyanin claims the drone was heading towards central Moscow.

The Mayor also said emergency services were at work at the crash site but no casualties or damage to infrastructure have been reported.

The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the reports.

Since the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukrainian forces have targeted Russian military, logistics, and infrastructure sites in the occupied territories and within Russia.

Today's drone report comes just hours after Ukraine's alleged drone attack was intercepted over the Bogorodskoye municipal district in Moscow Oblast.

While claims of Ukrainian attacks within Russian territory have increased since summer 2023, Kyiv rarely comments on these reports.

Statement from NSC Spokesperson Adrienne Watson on   Venezuela

The United States has been closely monitoring Venezuela’s presidential election that took place on Sunday, July 28 and the subsequent announcements by Venezuela’s National Electoral Council.   We continue to call for Venezuela’s electoral authorities to release full, transparent, and detailed voting results, including by polling station.  This is especially critical given that there are clear signs that the election results announced by Venezuela’s National Electoral Council do not reflect the will of the Venezuelan people as it was expressed at the ballot box on July 28.  We are also reviewing other electoral data shared by civil society organizations and the reports of international election monitors.    The United States stands on the side of the democratic aspirations of the Venezuela people, including supporting their right to express their views freely and without reprisal.

A look at Kamala Harris' work on foreign policy as vice president

By Haley Ott

July 22, 2024 / 1:08 PM EDT / CBS News

After President Biden announced he would not be running for reelection , he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his pick to become the Democratic nominee. Here's a look at some of Harris' work on foreign policy over the last three and a half years:

The U.S. border and immigration from South and Central America

Bernardo Arevalo, Guatemala's president, shakes hands with Vice President Kamala Harris during a meeting in the vice president's ceremonial office in Washington, D.C., on Monday, March 25, 2024.

Harris was assigned early during the Biden administration with addressing the " root causes " of irregular migration to the United States across its border with Mexico. She described those causes as corruption and lack of economic opportunity in some Central and South American nations.

She has traveled to Latin America twice as vice president: To Mexico and Guatemala in 2021, and to Honduras in 2022.

During a speech In Guatemala, she told people in the region considering making an unauthorized trip across the border: "Do not come. Do not come. The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our borders."

In Mexico, she announced the U.S. would be investing millions of dollars in a bid to enhance worker protections and push for labor reforms there. She also announced commitments to foster investment in Mexico through things including loans for affordable housing.

Harris also announced a joint partnership with Mexico to foster economic opportunities in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador through agriculture and youth empowerment. In March, the White House announced she had secured private sector commitments to invest $5 billion towards the promotion of economic opportunities and the reduction of violence in the region.

China, Taiwan and the South China Sea

Harris has largely carried the White House's message on the challenges presented by China, speaking on several occasions about curbing Chinese influence.

"We know that Beijing continues to coerce, to intimidate and to make claims to the vast majority of the South China Sea," Harris said in a speech during a seven day trip to Singapore and Vietnam in 2021.

"Beijing's actions continue to undermine the rules-based order and threaten the sovereignty of nations," she said. The United States stands with our allies and partners in the face of these threats."

Vice President Kamala Harris holds a press conference before departing Vietnam for the U.S. following her first official visit to Asia in Hanoi on Aug. 26, 2021.

In 2022, Harris said that the U.S. would "continue to support Taiwan's self defense , consistent with our long-standing policy."

Harris' visit to Singapore — a close U.S. ally that's home to a key U.S. Navy base in Southeast Asia — followed visits by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to Asia in the previous weeks. The Biden administration was eager to reassure Asian allies nervous about China's assertive policies in the region, especially in the wake of the chaotic U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan.

"The reason I am here is because the U.S. is a global leader, and we take that role seriously," said Harris. She stressed what she called the United States' "enduring engagement" in Asia, hitting on previous administration talking points about ensuring an "open and free" Indo-Pacific region, and "freedom of navigation" in the South China Sea.

NATO, Europe and Russia's war on Ukraine

Harris has voiced clear support for Ukraine as it continues fighting to repel Russia's ongoing invasion, and she has reiterated the U.S. commitment to the transatlantic NATO alliance with America's European partners.

Earlier this year, she vowed the U.S. would support Ukraine's fight for "as long as it takes."

At the Munich Security Conference in 2022, Harris said the U.S. had "an unwavering commitment to NATO and to the Alliance."

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks to the media at her hotel after attending the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 20, 2022, in Germany.

The meeting came as Russia massed hundreds of thousands of troops along Ukraine's border, just days before it launched its full-scale invasion.

"America's commitment to Article 5 is ironclad," Harris said in 2022, referring to the mutual defense clause in the NATO charter that calls for an attack on any member to be treated as an attack on all. "This commitment is sacrosanct to me, to President Biden and to our entire nation."

The Israel-Hamas war and the wider Middle East

Harris has said that she supports Israel's right to defend itself, but also that "as Israel defends itself, it matters how."

In a briefing in December 2023, Harris said that "as Israel pursues its military objectives in Gaza, we believe Israel must do more to protect innocent civilians."

She said that she and the president remained committed to the goal of a two-state solution.

"When this conflict ends, Hamas cannot control Gaza, and Israel must be secure. Palestinians need a hopeful political horizon, economic opportunity and freedom. And the region, more broadly, must be integrated and prosperous. And we must — we must work toward that vision," Harris said.

Josh Paul, a former director at the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Political Military Affairs, told CBS News on Monday that Harris could look to distinguish herself at least slightly from Mr. Biden's policy toward Israel. Paul resigned in October over the Biden administration's decision to continue providing Israel with weapons as it launched military operations in Gaza.

He said Harris had been "the first and often the loudest voice within the Biden administration talking about the need for a cease-fire, talking about Palestinian humanitarian issues and, frankly, humanizing the Palestinians," adding that he believed there was "room for some degree of optimism that as president, she will take a different path."

"I certainly wouldn't expect a Harris administration to walk away, in any way, from the U.S.', you know, ironclad support for Israel," he said.

He added that, in his opinion, Mr. Biden has found it "very hard to change his mind on things that were, you know, fixed within his perceptions," and he said Harris could prove "to be a more pragmatic" leader if she gets the nation's top job.

Emmet Lyons contributed to this report.

How the Biden Campaign Transformed Into the Harris Campaign

Staff members inside and outside the room have described the past handful of hours as hectic, overwhelming and emotional.

Katie Rogers covers the White House and reported from Washington.

After President Biden announced his departure on social media, it was somehow fitting that the call to flip the campaign to Vice President Kamala Harris was delivered over Slack.

“Please give a wave to this message if you’re online and available to do some design work right now,” the campaign’s creative director, Kate Conway, wrote to a team of designers in the messaging app on Sunday about 45 minutes after Mr. Biden made his announcement. “We are gearing up toward some quick pivots.”

This was an understatement.

A wave of hand emojis in various skin tones flew up, and campaign staffers worked through the night to pull down ads for Mr. Biden and replace them with ones for Vice President Kamala Harris. They designed a “Harris for President” logo in red, white and blue. They printed reams of new posters. And then, around midnight, there was a whiskey toast at the campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Del.

It was not an easy feat, as one campaign official put it, for a Sunday afternoon in July.

“The Harris for President creative and web teams sprang into action, rebranded the entire campaign overnight, and launched a new website in just 26 hours,” Ms. Conway said in an email. “There’s really no overselling how difficult a task that is — the brand exists everywhere from yard signs and rally placards to the website, our social channels, and our ad.”

Mr. Biden’s surprise decision to end his campaign not only upended the 2024 presidential race, it led to a rebranding frenzy at campaign headquarters — not to mention campaign offices throughout the country — and more than a little bit of whiplash.

For legions of campaign workers who had been trying to get Mr. Biden re-elected — some of whom have described the past few weeks as some of the hardest of their lives — there was not much time to grieve Mr. Biden’s departure.
