Aberdeen buying Strode Center, dome, more from Presentation Sisters

Elisa Sand

The reappearance of the Presentation College dome on campus this week is the first sign of a much bigger development that involves the city’s purchase of part of the campus.

Aberdeen and the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary have announced a partnership in which the city will acquire a significant portion of the former college campus, including the Strode Center, winter dome, soccer field and the northeast parcel of undeveloped land.

Aberdeen Parks Recreation and Forestry Director Mark Hoven said the transaction includes the fitness center added to the Strode Center, the soccer fields north of the Strode and land north and east of the dome.

Amber Schwab, property manager for the Presentation Sisters, said the purchase also includes auxiliary buildings affiliated with the athletic fields and facilities.

Work on putting up the dome began Monday, Oct. 15.

City officials confirmed last week that the dome was going up, but wouldn’t elaborate because the property is owned by the sisters. A message left last week for a spokeswoman for the covent was not returned.

“These properties will help us continue to improve quality of life in Aberdeen by allowing us to expand our commitment to providing year-round recreational opportunities to everyone in the community,” Aberdeen Mayor Travis Schaunaman said in a news release issued Monday. “The Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary have been integral to the success of Aberdeen, and I’m glad that we’re able to help them perpetuate their legacy for generations to come.”

The Strode Center was dedicated on campus in 1998, and the dome was first used in early 2015, according to Presentation College ‘s campus history.

While the city and the Presentation Sisters have come to an agreement, Schaunaman declined to disclose how much the city is paying until the sale is final.

Platting and a property appraisal are needed before the sale is finalized, he said. Until then, he said, the city will be entering into a temporary agreement to use the facilities.

City Manager Robin Bobzien told the council Monday that the board should expect lease agreements related to the Presentation property in the near future.

Operation of the dome during the colder months when it’s up is expected to cost about $230,000 per year, Schaunaman said.

Schaunaman said the city Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department will immediately start working with organizations interested in using the facilities. Contact has already been made with potential renters, he said.

Hoven said the city now has a list of groups that had reached out to the Presentation Sisters asking if the dome would be available this winter.

“We had 30 organizations reach out,” Schwab said.

The interest was there when Presentation College used the dome as well, Schwab said, though requests conflicted with use by campus groups and athletic teams.

The dome has been used for practices, soccer tournaments, softball games, recreational walking and more in the past.

Schwab said the exciting part about the city’s purchase is not only that it provides parks and rec programming on the north side of Aberdeen, but it opens the door to more options.

“The conversation and interest level is enormous,” she said.

The city will begin planning to make the property a more connected part of the community with features like recreation trails, Hoven said.

More than 100 volunteers help set up the dome

Hoven said 100 to 120 volunteers were helping Monday to get the dome ready to be inflated.

Workers and volunteers were from the Aberdeen Public Works Department, Hub City Soccer Club, Dacotah Bank, RDO, Northern State University and the Aberdeen Wings.

The support, Hoven said, shows the importance of the dome in the community.

Schaunaman said he’s excited about the agreement and what the space means for city programming.

“We’re busting at the seams,” he said of space demands for existing programming.

Schaunaman said the transaction opens up the possibility of new indoor activities, too.

Presentation Sisters happy to continue to improve quality of life in Aberdeen

“The sisters have a long tradition of partnering with others to enhance the quality of life for all the people of Aberdeen. We found a strong, reliable partner in Mayor Schaunaman and are grateful that children of all socio-economic status will have access to these resources for years to come,” Sister Mary Thomas, president of the Presentation Sisters Corporate Board, said in the release.

For more than a century, the Presentation Sisters have made significant contributions to the city, which have included the founding of St. Luke’s Hospital and Presentation College.

Their financial support has also enabled the Aberdeen Housing Authority to build low-income apartment complexes, facilitated HAPI Homes in developing affordable housing and played a pivotal role in Aberdeen’s faith-based education system, per the release.

Presentation officials started looking at financial health of college before COVID-19

Sister Mary Thomas of the Presentation Sisters Aberdeen

Just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the college, its board of trustees and the Corporate Board of the Presentation Sisters started a yearlong process of examining the financial well-being and sustainability of the school, according to a news release from the convent.

“Taking into account all these factors, we made the very difficult decision to close. Yet we know that God is always at work and will continue to call us as Presentation Sisters to reach out and meet the needs of today,” Thomas said in a news release issued at the end of September.

“We would like to see the land used for some purpose that would align with the values of the Sisters,” she said.

Now, that has come to be.

The East Suites near the Strode Center, soccer fields and dome are not part of the sale.

Schwab said there is currently interest in other buildings on campus and expects additional announcements in the coming months.

SDSU named 2024 safest large college campus in South Dakota

South Dakota State University again tops the list for safest large college campus in South Dakota, according to a new report by SafeHome.org.

The recognition reflects the rate of violent crime per 1,000 students of which SDSU scores 0.24. SDSU is also the safest in the region when Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and Nebraska are included.

“We are fully committed to providing the highest level of professional police and public safety services to the university community,” University Police Department Chief Tim Heaton said. “The protection and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors is and always has been our top priority. The department emphasizes the importance of accreditation, training, consultation, teamwork and open discussion with campus constituencies on law enforcement and related safety matters.”

The city of Brookings and SDSU have consistently been named among the top safest campus communities in the nation and state.

SDSU is home to a full-time, fully accredited police department dedicated to ensuring the safety of campus.

The University Police Department offers services including:

  • Educational presentation and programs
  • Safety escorts
  • Victim services
  • Firearm storage

SafeHome.org utilized data from the U.S. Department of Education regarding campus safety and compared institutions with an enrollment over 10,000.

City of Aberdeen opens Presentation College facilities for community use

ABERDEEN, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - One year ago, Presentation College announced it would be closing its campus permanently. Now, city officials in Aberdeen have found that one man’s campus is another man’s recreational treasure.

For many months, there were questions around the city of Aberdeen about what was going to happen with the buildings on Presentation’s campus, such as the Presentation Dome and the Strode Center. That decision laid with the Presentation Sisters, and they were the ones who reached out to Aberdeen Parks and Recreation with an idea.

A lease agreement to transfer control of the facilities to the city was formed with the Sisters. In December, Aberdeen officially opened the Strode Center and newly renamed Aberdeen Dome to the community.

For a small daily fee or the purchase of a punch card, residents can utilize the Saints’ fitness center, basketball court and indoor turf field, which lies in a temperature-controlled dome and also features batting cages.

Those facilities quickly generated interest from Aberdeen’s residents.

“Right now, we have offered some Dome hours. It’s kind of how we are scheduling things in the mornings to allow people to come in and use these facilities every morning.  We are working with other groups in town, certainly the Hub City Soccer Club, Northern State University, and Central High School have all scheduled times already,” said Recreation Aquatic Supervisor Travis Lemer.

Northern State University’s head distance running coach, Macy Heinz, was just one of the many that jumped on the opportunity to have their team practice in the Aberdeen Dome. Since winter’s arrival, it’s already proved to be an asset.

“As far as I know from last year, we struggled to get outside, especially with the winter we had last year.  I think this is a really good tool that we can have now to utilize to A: for the city of Aberdeen and B: for athletes to get some good training in a fairly temperature regulated, not icy surface,” said Heinz.

Parks and Rec Director Mark Hoven believes the facilities will bring new opportunities to Aberdeen’s residents.

“It was really a quality of life type thing. You live in Aberdeen... a lot of winters here. This provides an opportunity for people to get out of the winter. So, we’re pretty excited to have the opportunity to come in and have both this and the Strode Activities Center to be available to the citizens of Aberdeen to use,” said Hoven.

City officials say they are leasing the facilities on a month-to-month basis, but hope to reach a purchase agreement with the Presentation Sisters in the near future.

The Northeast South Dakota Family Violence Prevention Conference in Aberdeen this fall.

The Northeast South Dakota Family Violence Prevention Conference is headed to Aberdeen this fall.

Registration is now open for the 2024 Northeast South Dakota Family Violence Prevention Conference, scheduled for Oct. 16-17 at the Dakota Event Center in Aberdeen.

Tickets can be purchased online at nesdfamilyviolence.com . The two-day conference features keynote speakers from across the country, a Wings of Hope presentation, and networking in addition to breakfast and a Saturday evening dinner and presentation. Attendees can choose between a dinner/conference option, or conference only or dinner only. A student discount is also available.

“Every year, the conference committee has the best presenters that speak on the latest strategies and research in family violence,” Gina Karst, executive director of Safe Harbor in Aberdeen, said in a release. “I look forward to hearing from experts in the field and exploring practical solutions that can be applied to support affected individuals and communities. I also enjoy the opportunity to network with other professionals dedicated to working with victims of violence.”

Keynote speakers include:

Hera McLeod is a Washington, D.C.-based writer, speaker, tech leader and civil rights activist. She has made several television appearances advocating about social issues, and has testified before the U.S. Congress and Maryland State Legislative body, which has led to reformative legislation in the area of Family Court and Child Protection. Her story is best told through her memoir, “Defying Silence: A Memoir of a Mother’s Loss and Courage in the Face of Injustice,” which recounts her son’s murder and the path that led her to fight for other women and children.

Tanya Johnson Martinez has a diverse career spanning four years in civil litigation, 14 years as a career prosecutor and three as a defense attorney. Her legal journey started with traffic infractions and progressed to the most complex and high-profile cases, including the Savannah Greywind case. A North Dakota native, she employs the skills and knowledge she holds while seeking justice for citizens of her home state.

Leah J. Viste spent 20 years as a prosecutor for the State of North Dakota, representing clients in all types of criminal cases. She is currently a public defender for the North Dakota Commission on Legal Counsel for Indigents in Fargo. She has previously presented on civil commitment of sexually dangerous offenders, legal issues for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, search and seizure, 1983 actions and immunity, and constitutional issues in corrections and law enforcement.

Tony Godwin has been a part of around 2,100 criminal investigations where he acted as the primary detective in cases related to the exploitation of children. He has served the Garland, Texas Police Department for 28 years and presently holds a pivotal role in the Northern Texas Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. He was recently inducted into the Law Enforcement Hall of Fame.

“I hope people will take away from the conference an enhanced understanding of the complexities of family violence and other forms of abuse,” Karst said in a release. “I also hope that attendees will find inspiration to take action and be proactive in efforts to combat violence, fueled by stories, research, and best practices shared during the conference.”

The NESD Family Violence Prevention Conference began in 2013 with a group of community agencies, with the initiative to address family violence. With limited education available in rural South Dakota communities, the conference was created to provide evidence-based, trauma-informed education that was affordable to professionals across the state, with the goal of addressing issues by providing skill-based training to professionals who work in the field of family violence. The conference continues to reach a diverse group of professionals, including victim advocates, law enforcement, court services, social workers, judges, prosecutors, mental health professionals, and more. Notable speakers through the years have included Casey Gwinn, Kristen Gibbons-Feden, Jonathan Hatami, and the detectives who worked the Christopher Watts case.

John Papendick: Presentation College football team leaves it all on the field

On a wickedly windy day at Swisher Field in Aberdeen that featured a marriage proposal, Presentation College saved its best for last as the Saints nearly upset Dakota State in the 2021 football finale.

With two touchdowns and a safety, Dakota State won 16-14 on Nov. 13, but the proud Saints (0-11) seemed to play as if they were going for an undefeated season and a spot in the NAIA playoffs. In the final seconds, Presentation kicker Luiz Ferreira made a great attempt at an unsuccessful 55-yard field goal that would have won the game.

It seemed to be one of the few things that went wrong for Ferreira and the Saints on the day. Before the game, the Presentation senior proposed to girlfriend and fellow Saints student-athlete Lexi Boone, a soccer player. She said yes, according to the Presentation College athletics website, and Ferreira went on to make two point-after-touchdown kicks. Also, three of his nine punts went 71, 61 and 60 yards. The Saints' two touchdowns came from Breken Green, one on a pass from Hunter Griffrow.

The Saints’ final effort is a great testament to the players — especially the seniors, the coaching staff and Presentation's young football program that played its 11th season this fall. The Saints are 38-71 since their first game on Sept. 3, 2011. That was a 39-13 loss to Trinity Bible College. Presentation's first-ever win was 28-6 over Martin Luther on Oct. 1, 2011.

Here are some other sporting things I know:

Earlier this month, Vermillion native Maddie Lavin led the University of South Dakota women’s triathlon team to third in the nation. The host school, Arizona State, won the college national championships for the fifth year in a row. Covering the event for her now newspaper, the Arizona Republic, was former American News sports reporter Jenna Ortiz.

Yes, Augustana is adding men’s Division I hockey in 2023-24. But did you know that the Vikings will add women’s acrobatics and tumbling in spring 2023 and women’s lacrosse in 2023-24?

Also, did you know that Mount Marty in Yankton offers multiple co-ed sports: archery, shotgun, cheer and dance?

Three-time University of South Dakota football captain Jack Cochrane recently became the seventh player in school history to record more than 300 career tackles. The two other members of that club are Groton native Todd Pharis (306 from 1981-84) and Watertown native Craig Austin (331 from 1978-81).

Even though they were both losses, USD senior and women’s basketball captain Chloe Lamb of Onida and her teammates started their season in a memorable way. First, they lost 73-71 to the Oklahoma Sooners in Vermillion on Nov. 9 and then to No. 1-rated South Carolina 72-41 in Sioux Falls on Nov. 12. Lamb had 28 points in the two games.

In the last five seasons, the Pierre football team is 50-9, including a 28-3 home record, with five straight Class 11AA state titles. Meanwhile in the last four seasons, the Winner senior class of football players has gone 25-1 at home while the Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan seniors have gone 23-1 at home.

Junior Paiton Burckhard of Aberdeen surpassed 1,000 points in her South Dakota State  University basketball career, but the Jackrabbits were nipped by Mississippi State 76-71 in Starkville on Nov. 12. She became the 40th member of her school’s 1,000-point club, and joined teammates Myah Selland of Letcher and Tyler Irwin of Wahpeton, N.D., on the list.
