Testimonials

Various methods used while teaching help me a lot while working as a school counsellor even after 3 years. I still can call up my teachers any time when I face any difficulty. This course gives entirely new perspective towards working with children and adolescents

Disha Joshi P.G. Diploma in school psychology,2016-17

This course was turning point in my career. It was very interactive, there was never a dull moment in the class. While working with teenage girls, I found my listening skills, empathy and communication has improved tremendously. When you come out of the course you have that thought in you that you’ve to work for the society, and not merely for yourself.

It helped me to understand my children better.

Vaidehi Jog P.G. Diploma in school psychology,2016-17

I’d 24 years gap in education when I joined this course. But staff at JPIP is so cooperative and encouraging, I never felt I’d come after such along gap. Apart from my professional life, even in my personal life, I could overcome lot of personal hurdles because of whatever I’d learnt during my course. During this COVID 19 lockdown period, I could remain positive as well as I could keep people around me positive. This is all because of my course in JPIP.

The Department of Psychology was established in Fergusson College in 1979 to cater to the demand to offer specialization in Psychology to undergraduate students.  Though a relatively young Department, the teaching of Psychology goes back a long way when it was taught under the encompassing subject of Philosophy. The department of Philosophy has had stalwarts like Prin. G.G. Agarkar, who originally founded the department, Prin. Bhate, Prof.  R.D. Ranade, V. K. Jog, D. D.Wadekar, G. N. Joshi and Prin. S. V. Bokil has been on its staff since its inception, and students were fortunate to have been taught by such eminent personalities. Owing to the incessant demand for specialization in Psychology, however, Psychology was established as a separate Department, and soon became one of the most sought-after subjects in Fergusson College.

The Department of Psychology was established under the able leadership of Mrs. Geeta Mehta who served as its Head until 1999. From then on it was headed by Dr. Mrs. Vidya Talwarkar, who served until her retirement in 2008. For quite a few years the department offered undergraduate courses in Psychology.

In the year 2005, The Post Graduate Certificate Course in Counselling Psychology (PGCCCP) was launched by the department. This is a one-year autonomous course offered by Fergusson College, and is coordinated by Dr. Megha Deuskar. This course is a skill-based module and trains students in the actual skills of counselling.

Dr. Shobhana Abhyankar, former Head of the Department, took keen interest in starting the M.A. programme in Psychology in 2006 and setting up satellite a library for PG students. For the PG course, two specializations are offered, Industrial Psychology and Clinical Psychology. The department has produced eminent psychologists, psychotherapists and several brilliant academicians.

Keeping in view the ever-increasing need for counselling, Dr. Abhyankar established MAANAS: Center for Psychological Testing and Counselling in 2006. Personal Counselling, and Aptitude testing and career counselling is carried on at MAANAS.

The Department organized three National Seminars “Recent trends in Psychology: An applied perspective” (2009), “Health and Well-being: Contemporary issues and perspectives” (2011) and “Developing Human Potential: Issues, Perspectives and Challenges” (2013).
