How can Parents Help their Kids with their Studies?

Parents need to assist their kids in their studies, but sometimes it seems to be a tough job in the initial stages. The task appears to be more difficult when you do not know where to begin. Here, we provide a few suggestions to guide the parents to help their kids in their studies and implant healthy academic habits in their children.

  • Change Study Habits, if required

The children need to be engaged with the study material to understand the concepts in-depth. You, being a parent, can question and discuss with your child what she/he learns in the classroom and outside. Your kids need to take on all the heavy responsibilities of their studies independently. If you do more than your child does, you need to reassess their study routine.

  • Remove Distractions

Make certain that your child is not distracted in any way during their study time. You can offer them small rewards if they can finish their studies with complete concentration. If your child is writing while watching a favorite cartoon show or reading while listening to a song, you need to stop such distractions.

  • Make the Study Process Interactive

Making the study process interactive feels exciting to the kids. You can arrange a quiz based on the study material that they have learnt recently. Interactive sessions will help them to understand their preparation status. They will also learn how to guess correctly depending on the remaining hints. To boost their logical strength, you can ask your kid the reasons behind their answers.

  • Ask Recall Questions

There are three formats of recognition questions – multiple-choice, correct-match, and fill-in-the-blanks. As a parent, you can ask a question they studied a few months ago. You can ask the question without offering them an option or hint. If your kid can answer the questions, ask them some descriptive questions associated with the same topic. Thus, your kid will learn to recall answers and explanations throughout the session.

  • Do Not Encourage Unnecessary Reading

Sometimes, parents focus on the children rereading a topic. Every time it is not so effective. You need to see whether your child needs to reread the same chapter repetitively, or it might be more helpful if they invest the time in reading another chapter or solving some exercises.

Multiplication hopscotch.

Everyone knows how to play hopscotch, but by introducing maths into the mix you can take this traditional playground activity to the next level.

Fraction hopscotch! I want to do this with multiplication ...

Instructions:

  • Step 1: Using chalk, draw out hopscotch squares on the ground, and in each square, write either multiple of a number or multiplication facts.
  • Step 2: Each person then hops, skips, and counts at the same time, which is a really good way of helping those multiplication tables stick.

Telling the Time Activity

Time is one of those things many children find tricky, but this activity will help your child tackle this topic.

     Instructions:

  • Step 1: Try drawing a clock on the ground with chalk.
  • Step 2: Then, get your child to use their body to make the hands of the clock. They could show just the hour or minute hands by lying straight, or they could use their body to make the hour and the minute hands, with their legs (the longer part) being the minute hand and their torso (the shorter part) the hour hand.

Creative Counting

Simple counting activities are great for younger children, with lots of opportunities for counting things they see – Lorries, red cars, blue signs, etc…  This could be made more challenging by changing how many points each is worth, so children could count up in twos or threes etc…

Creative Counting Road Trip Maths Game

Teacher Says, “Geometry!”

Ramp up this traditional game by having kids illustrate the following geometric terms using only their arms: parallel and perpendicular lines; acute, right, and obtuse angles; and 0-, 90-, and 180-degree angles. This activity can also be performed using the fingers. Challenge: Increase the pace of the commands and see if your students can keep up!

Count Your Dots to Learn Multiplication

Multiplication is a new skill for third-grade math students, but it builds on concepts they’ve mastered in earlier grades. This card game helps them make connections. Each player flips two cards, then draws a grid and makes dots where the lines join. They count the dots, and the person with the most keeps all the cards.

count your dots

This is an interesting game in which the teacher gives a number and ask the kids to give a particular set of numbers which equals to the given number by using only arithmetic operations. Certain constraints can also be applied.

For Example :

  • "The number given is 20. Give 2 numbers". The solutions can be (4,5) as 4 x 5 = 20, or (8,12) as 8 + 12 = 20. Since no constraints were given here, any kind of operation could be used.
  • "The number given is 40. Give 2 numbers and operation to be used is addition". The solutions can be (10,30) or (5, 35) since only addition can be used in this case.
  • "The number given is 9. Give 3 numbers and all the numbers must be less than 5". The solutions can be (3,2,4) or (4,1,4).

The game can be made tougher by using more rigid constraints!

In this game, the teacher gives a number to a kid and asks him/her to double it. First, small numbers can be used (like 5, 10, 12) and then gradually move to bigger numbers (like 30, 65, 45).

To increase the difficulty, combine the double operation with any other operation (like subtraction addition etc).

For Example:

  • Number is 5; double it; double it once more; now double it and add 20.
  • Number is 63; double it and add 5; double it and subtract 1 five times.

Guesstimate

In this game, the kid is required to guess the right unit according to the given sentence (like cm, m, kg, g etc) .

  • The distance from your home to my home is 2 __ (Answer: kilometre; since metre or any other unit is irrelevant here as it would become really pointless).
  • The weight of the rice is 500 __ (Answer: gram).
  • The water in the tank is 25 __ (Answer: litre).

Data is Fun!

In this game, the teacher uses real life data to teach mathematical techniques like graphing to the child. These include:

  • Counting objects using tally marks.
  • Using the game of hopscotch to teach the concept of coordinates.

This game can help the child learn the trickiest concepts in mathematics!

As we all know, development of the brain is immensely important in the childhood. Eventhough normal schooling and completing the syllabus is important, we cannot deny the fact that they alone are not enough for the development of logical and spatial abilities of a child. These activities can provide knowledge with a pinch of amusement and fun!

Hope you and your children enjoyed these fun-filled activities for learning math. These fun activities help the children to grasp the concepts and fills the gap in learning the concepts in a fun way. These forms of activities help the children to create interest in the subject and make them explore more activities like this. Learning math with these activities will aid them to reduce the aversion created with the subject. Enjoy learning math!

PRACTICE TIME

Three friends wanted to buy a cricket bat and ball. Bina had Rs. 48.50, Raman had Rs. 55.50, and Venu had Rs. 38.00. How much money did they have in all?

Total money they had in all = 48.50 + 55.50 + 38.00 = Rs. 142

Hari booked a railway ticket for Rs. 62.50. He gave a 100-rupee note. How much money will he get back with the ticket?

Amount of money he will get back = 100 – 62.50 = Rs. 37.50

Gita and her friends went shopping. She bought things for Rs. 58, Rs. 37 and Rs. 22. Gita had a hundred-rupee note. How much money should she borrow from her friends to pay the bill?

Amount of money she has = Rs 100

Amount of money she has to give to the shopkeeper = 58 + 37 + 22 = Rs. 117

Hence, the amount of money she should borrow from her friends to pay the bill = 117 – 100 = Rs. 17.

10 young children working in a bangle factory were set free today. A news reporter and the police found them in a sad condition. The factory made the children work very hard. It paid them only Rs. 80 a day. The children are happy to go back to their homes in their village. They will go to a special school so that they can learn to study like other children their age. By making children work, the factory tries to save money. The police will now take action.

Let us see how much money the factory tries to save

Money 1 older worker should get = Rs. 513 a day

Money 1 child is paid = Rs. 80 a day

On 1 person, the factory saves Rs. 513 – _____ = Rs. 433 a day

On 10 persons, the factory saves

Rs. 433 × 10 = Rs. _____ a day

On 1 person, the factory saves Rs. 513 – Rs. 80 = Rs. 433 a day

Rs. 433 × 10 = Rs. 4330 a day
