An essay hook is the first one or two sentences of your essay that are used to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into your discussion.

It is called a hook because it “grabs” the reader and doesn’t let them go! It should have something in there that makes the reader feel curious and intrigued, compelling them to continue reading.

Techniques for Good Essay Hooks

Here are a few techniques that you can use to write a good essay hook:

  • Use a Quotation : Sometimes, a relevant quotation from a well-known author or expert can help establish the context or theme of your essay. Next time you’re conducting research for an essay, keep an eye out for a really compelling quote that you could use as your hook for that essay.
  • Start with a Statement that is Surprising or Unusual: A surprising or unusually statement will draw a reader in, making them want to know more about that topic. It’s good if the statement contradicts common knowledge or reveals an insight about your topic that isn’t immediately obvious. These can be particularly good for argumentative essays where you’re putting forward a controversial or compelling argument as your thesis statement .
  • Tell a Brief Anecdote : A short, interesting story related to your topic can personaize the story, making it more than just a dry essay, and turning it into a compelling narrative that’s worth reading.
  • Use Statistics or Facts: Interesting, surprising, or shocking facts or statistics work similarly to surprising statements: they make us want to know more about a topic. Statistics and facts in your introductions are particularly useful for analytical, expository , and argumentative essays.
  • Start with a Question: Questions that make the reader think deeply about an issue, or pose a question that the reader themselves has considered, can be really effecitve. But remember, questions tend to be better for informal and personal essays, and are generally not allowed in formal argumentative essays. If you’re not sure if you’re allowed to use questions in your essays, check with your teacher first.

Below, I’ll present some examples of hooks that you could use as inspiration when writing your own essay hook.

Essay Hook Examples

These examples might help stimulate your thinking. However, keep in mind that your essay hook needs to be unique to your essay, so use these as inspiration but write your own essay hook that’s perfect for your own essay.

1. For an Essay About Yourself

An essay about yourself can be personal, use “I” statements, and include memories or thoughts that are deeply personal to you.

  • Question: “Have you ever met someone who could turn even the most mundane events into a thrilling adventure? Let me introduce myself.”
  • Anecdote: “The smell of freshly baked cookies always takes me back to the day when I accidentally started a baking business at the age of nine.”
  • Intriguing Statement: “I’ve always believed that you haven’t truly lived until you’ve read a book upside down, danced in the rain, or taught a parrot to say ‘I love pizza.'”
  • Quotation: “As Mark Twain once said, ‘The secret of getting ahead is getting started.’ That’s a philosophy I’ve embraced in every aspect of my life.”
  • Humorous Statement: “I’m a self-proclaimed ‘professional chocolate tester’ – a title that’s not only delicious but also requires extreme dedication.”
  • Start with your Mission Statement : “My life motto is simple but powerful: be the person who decided to go for it.
  • Fact or Statistic: “According to a study, people who speak more than one language tend to be better at multitasking . As a polyglot, I certainly live up to that statistic.”
  • Comparison or Metaphor: “If my life were a book, it would be a blend of an adventurous novel, a suspense thriller, and a pinch of romantic comedy.”
  • Personal Revelation: “Ever since I was a child, I’ve had an uncanny ability to communicate with animals. It’s an unusual skill, but one that has shaped my life in many ways.”
  • Narrative: “The day everything changed for me was an ordinary Tuesday. Little did I know, a single conversation would lead me to discover my true passion.”

2. For a Reflective Essay

A reflective essay often explores personal experiences, feelings, and thoughts. So, your hooks for reflective essays can usually be more personal, intriguing, and engaging than other types of essays. Here are some examples for inspiration:

  • Question: “Have you ever felt as though a single moment could change your entire life? This essay is going to explore that moment for me.”
  • Anecdote: “I was standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon, looking at the vast emptiness, and for the first time, I truly understood the word ‘perspective’.”
  • Bold Statement: “There is a part of me that is still trapped in that room, on that rainy afternoon, holding the letter that would change everything.”
  • Personal Revelation: “The first time I truly felt a sense of belonging wasn’t in a crowded room full of friends, but in the quiet solitude of a forest.”
  • Intriguing Statement: “In my life, silence has been a teacher more profound than any words could ever be.”
  • Quotation: “Einstein once said, ‘The only source of knowledge is experience.’ Now, looking back, I realize how profound that statement truly is.”
  • Comparison or Metaphor: “If my life is a tapestry, then that summer was the vibrant thread that changed the entire pattern.”
  • Narrative: “As the train pulled out of the station, I realized I wasn’t just leaving my hometown, I was leaving my old self behind.”
  • Philosophical Statement: “In the theater of life, we are both the actor and the audience, playing our part and watching ourselves simultaneously.”
  • Emotive Statement: “There is a sort of sweet sorrow in remembering, a joy tinged with a hint of sadness, like the last notes of a beautiful song.”

For an Argumentative Essay

Essay hooks for argumentative essays are often the hardest. This type of essay tends to require the most formal type of academic writing, meaning your hook shouldn’t use first person, and should be more based on fact and objectivity, often at the expense of creativity. Here are some examples.

  • Quotation: “Thomas Jefferson once said, ‘Whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government.’ If Jefferson were alive today, he would likely feel that this meed for a well-informed citizenry is falling well short of where he would aspire.”
  • Provocative Statement: “Despite what romantic films may portray, love at first sight is merely a myth perpetuated by society. This essay will prosecute the argument that love at first sight is a myth.”
  • Statistical Fact: “According to the World Health Organization, depression is the leading psychological disability worldwide. Yet, mental health is still stigmatized and often overlooked. This essay will argue that depression should be seen as a health issue, and stigmatization of depression causes serious harm to society.”
  • Comparison: “Much like an unchecked infection, climate change, if left ignored, can spread far beyond what it is today, causing long-term economic and social problems that may even threaten the longevity of humanity itself.”
  • Contradiction : “While we live in an era of unprecedented technological advancements, millions around the world are still denied basic internet access.”
  • Bold Declaration: “Animal testing is not only ethically unacceptable, but it also undermines the progress of medical research.”
  • Challenging Belief: “Despite popular belief, the automation of jobs is not a threat but an opportunity for society to evolve.”
  • Quotation: “George Orwell wrote in ‘1984’, ‘Big Brother is Watching You.’ In our modern society, with the advancement of technology, this is becoming more of a reality than fiction.”

For a Compare and Contrast Essay

A compare and contrast essay examines two issues, looking at both the similarities and differences between them. A good hook for a compare and contrast essay will immediately signal to the reader the subjects that are being compared and why they’re being compared. Here are sine ideas for hooks for a compare and contrast essay:

  • Quotation: “As Charles Dickens wrote in his novel ‘A Tale of Two Cities’, ‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times’. This could equally apply to the contrasting dynamics of urban and rural living.”

Writing an engaging hook for a psychology essay involves sparking the reader’s interest in the human mind, behavior, or the specific psychology topic you’re discussing. Here are some stimulating hooks for a psychology essay:

  • Rhetorical Question: “How much control do we truly have over our own actions?”
  • Quotation: “Sigmund Freud once said, ‘Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways.’ This essay will explore whether this is universally true.”
  • Provocative Statement: “Contrary to popular belief, ‘venting out’ anger might actually be fueling the fire of fury.”
  • Comparison: “Just as an iceberg reveals only a fraction of its bulk above water, conscious minds may only be a small piece of who humans truly are.”

  • Intriguing Question: “Have you ever wondered how it feels to be part of two completely different cultures, yet wholly belong to neither?”
  • Bold Declaration: “Breaking a bone can be a painful experience. Breaking stereotypes, however, is an entirely different kind of challenge.”

As I wrap up this article, I want to share a few last tips on qualities that a good essay hook should have. Keep these tips in mind when writing your essay hook and using the above essay hook examples:

First, relevance . A good hook should be directly relevant to the topic or theme of your essay. The hook should provide a preview of what’s to come without giving too much away.

Second, Intrigue. A great hook should make the reader want to continue reading. It should create a question in the reader’s mind or present a fascinating idea that they want to know more about.

Third, uniqueness. An effective hook should be original and unique. It should stand out from the many other essays that the reader might be going through.

Fourth, clarity. Even though a hook should be captivating and original, it should also be clear and easy to understand. Avoid complex sentences and jargon that might confuse the reader.

Fifth, genre conventions. Too often, my students try to be so creative in their essay hooks that they forget genre conventions . The more formal an essay, the harder it is to write the hook. My general approach is to focus on statistics and facts, and avoid rhetorical questions , with more formal essay hooks.

Keep in mind that you should run your essay hook by your teacher by showing them your first draft before you submit your essay for grading. This will help you to make sure it follows genre conventions and is well-written.

But, instead of reeling under pressure to come up with this elusively perfect essay hook at the eleventh hour, I’ve found a better way to write great essay hooks. 

In this guide, I’ll tell you what it takes to write the most compelling and attention-grabbing hooks. I’ll also break down six awesome types of essay hooks you can experiment with and share examples to inspire your next opening statement.

What is an Essay Hook?

An essay hook is the opening statement of an essay, written to capture readers' attention and nudge them to learn more about the topic. Also known as a lede or lead, this hook introduces readers to the topic/theme of the essay and piques their curiosity to continue reading. 

The hook creates the entire narrative for your essay. It tells readers what to expect from the rest of the essay and creates context around your main argument or thesis statement. 

6 Types of Essay Hooks You Can Experiment With

I’ve created this handy list of six different types of essay hooks. You can choose the one that best fits your essay’s context and create a stellar opening statement within minutes. 

1. Compelling fact or statistic

Lead with evidence and use a powerful fact or statistic as your essay hook. It’s one of the best ways to capture readers’ attention from the start and keep them intrigued throughout your essay. 

For example, if you’re writing about the importance of time management for freelancers, you have two options to create your opening sentence:

Generic : “Managing time as a freelancer is no easy feat.”

Impactful : “Nearly 70% of freelancers struggle to effectively divide and manage their time between multiple clients.” 

This data point, linked to the original research, sets a strong tone for your essay and draws people in to read more. It communicates

When working on an argumentative essay , I always write with the mindset that nobody has the time to read my thoughts from start to finish. So, I have to get to the point quickly and make a solid argument worth people’s time.

Consider these two examples:

Either of these hooks could work fine if we were just writing a personal essay about a move to a new place. But if we’re specifically writing about the sky, the second example is better. It sticks to the point — the sky and the color of the sky — and doesn’t stray into irrelevant details.

A descriptive hook works best when writing an explanatory or opinion-led essay. Descriptive hooks, as the name suggests, illustrate a topic in detail to create context for the essay. It's a good way to build awareness for and educate readers on lesser-known themes.

But a descriptive hook can easily become too plain or unexciting to read. To make it work, you have to write an engaging description using imagery, analogies, and other figures of speech. 

Remember to make your hook reader-friendly by avoiding passive voice, mainstream cliches, and lengthy sentences.

‍ Let me break them down for you. 

1. Gain in-depth knowledge of your topic

Before you start writing your essay, you need to know your topic — not just in name, but in-depth. You don't have to become a subject matter expert overnight. But you do need to research the topic inside out 

Your research will help you:

  • Narrow your focus
  • Build an argument
  • Shape the narrative

Your research insights determine your essay’s structure and guide your choice of hook.

A serious argumentative essay can start with a shocking statistic or a bold claim. And an expository essay can open with a descriptive hook while a metaphor hook would work best for a narrative essay.

A best practice I often share with writers is to think of one reader and keep yourself in their shoes . This exercise can tell you so much about your audience — what kind of tone they like, what matters the most to them, what topics interest them, and so on. 

You can use these insights to create a compelling essay hook. Here’s how:

  • For an argumentative essay, you’re trying to convince someone who doesn’t agree with you that what you’re claiming is right or, at least, reasonable. You don’t want to turn them off with snarky or offensive language — but you do want to be authoritative. Your hook should match that tone and support your effort.
  • A narrative essay is likely to welcome more lyrical language, so starting with a colorful description or an anecdote might make more sense than, say, a bold claim or surprising fact. Whatever tone you choose for your narrative essay — comical or gentle or bold — should be used for your hook.
  • ‍ Expository essays can use all sorts of tones and be written to a variety of audiences, so think carefully about the tone that best fits your subject matter. An essay explaining how the human body shuts down when overdosed will likely require a different tone than one on the lives of circus masters in the late 1800s.

4. Length of essay

Are you writing a 10-page paper or a three-page reflection? Or is this your senior thesis, pushing over 100 pages?

‍ If you’re writing a shorter paper, you’ll want to keep your hook quick and snappy.  

Readers are expecting a quick read, and they don’t want to spend five minutes only going through the introduction. 

In contrast, you can approach a longer essay — like a senior thesis or a term paper — with a longer hook. Just make sure your hook relates to and supports the core point of your essay. You don’t want to waste space describing a scene that ultimately has nothing to do with the rest of your piece.

⚡ ‍ Take action: If you write out the items on your list, how long will they be? A sentence or paragraph? Perfect. Two to five paragraphs? Unless your essay is on the longer side, you may want to save that information for later in the piece.

3 Approaches to Avoid When Writing Hooks 

I’ve read hundreds of essays — enough to recognize lazy writing from the first few words. It’s equally easy for readers to discard your essays as ‘poorly written’ just by reading the first line. 

So, I made a list of three types of essay hooks you want to avoid at all costs because these hooks can only disappoint your readers. 

1. Quotations

Quotes are probably the most overused type of hook in any form of writing. What's even worse is rinsing and repeating the same old quotes from Abraham Lincoln or Nelson Mandela in your essays. 

No matter how powerful a quote sounds, you shouldn’t slap it at the opening of your essay. It doesn’t give readers the excitement of reading something original and looks lazy.

For example, if you’re writing an essay on productivity, here’s what a good and bad lede looks like:

“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work” – Stephen King
Did you know that consuming 100 gms of sugar can slash your productivity levels by over 50% in a day?  

2. Definitions

The New Oxford American Dictionary defines a hook as "a thing designed to catch people's attention." 

If I opened my article with this dictionary definition of a hook, you’d have either dozed off or left this page long back to find something more interesting. 

Here's the thing: definitions put people to sleep. Readers don't want to see a formal, jargon-heavy definition of a topic as the very first line of an essay. Your opening statement should have some personality in it to show readers they're in for an exciting read. 

For example, if you’re writing about happy hormones, here’s what a good and bad lede looks like:

Happy hormones are known to boost the happiness levels in your body by creating positive feelings.
Ever wondered why cat videos make you instantly happy, and ice creams give you an extra dose of energy? It's all about how happy hormones control our brain chemistry.

3. “Imagine this”

Opening your essay with "Imagine this" used to be an interesting way to put your readers in a scenario and set the context for your essay. But now, it's far too cliched and just another lazy attempt to write an essay hook. 

You can create a relatable scenario for users without asking them to imagine or picture it. Use the descriptive hook format with an interesting choice of words to convey the same ideas more creatively.

For example, if you’re writing an essay on preparing for higher studies abroad, here’s what a good and bad lede looks like:

Imagine this: You’ve been applying to multiple universities, writing SOPs, and preparing for exams without guidance. Everything can go south any minute.

This opening statement can make or break your entire essay. While I’ve broken down my best tips to create the best essay hooks, here’s a surefire way to write compelling openings :

Go through your notes and either outline your essay or write the whole thing. This way, you’ll know the central thread (or throughline) that runs throughout your piece. 

Once your essay or outline is complete, go back through and identify a particularly compelling fact, claim, or example that relates to that central thread.

‍Write up that fact, claim, or example as the hook for your essay using any of the methods we’ve covered. Then revise or write your essay so the hook leads smoothly into the rest of the piece and you don’t repeat that information elsewhere.

This doesn’t have to be a literal question that ends with a question mark—instead, it can simply be an unusual statement or a weird situation. Make sure it’s something your target audience will find interesting.

Tip 3: Keep Your Promises

If you open your essay with an interesting hook, you need to be mindful of what you’re promising to the reader. If you don’t keep that promise throughout the piece, your reader will feel tricked.

For example, you’d probably be unhappy if you read a story that started with, “The monster was coming for me” and then, later in the first chapter, said, “Then I woke up and realized it was just a nightmare.”

An equivalent in an essay would be writing a controversial statement and then failing to prove why that statement is true, or asking an interesting question and then failing to answer it later.

If you’re choosing between a fascinating hook that doesn’t have much to do with your topic, or a decent hook that’s directly related to your thesis statement, you should go with the latter.

Some writers focus so much on nailing the opening hook that they forget to make the rest of the essay equally strong.

Both essays and stories require good hooks. After all, you’re still competing for your reader’s attention, no matter what kind of work you’re writing.

However, a story hook will look very different from an essay hook.

If you’re writing fiction, you most likely won’t use a statistic, question, or quote to hook your readers in. Instead, your best options will be a statement, a description, or an anecdote—or, or often, a sentence that combines a little bit of all three.

Just like with essays, you should try to raise a question in your reader’s head. This can be a strange character, an unusual setting, or a mysterious fact.

Here are some examples of strong hooks in novels:

An essay hook is the first thing your audience will read. If it doesn’t hook them right off the bat, they might decide not to keep reading. It’s important that your opening statement is impactful while not being too wordy or presumptuous.

It’s also crucial that it clearly relates to your topic. You don’t want to mislead your readers into thinking your essay is about something it’s not. So, what kind of essay hook should you write? Here are seven ideas to choose from:

1.   Story

Everyone likes a good story. If an interesting story or anecdote relates to your essay topic, the hook is a great place to include it. For example:

The key to a good story hook is keeping it short and sweet. You’re not writing a novel in addition to an essay!

2.   Fact

Another great essay hook idea is to lay out a compelling fact or statistic. For example:

There are a few things to keep in mind when doing this. Make sure it’s relevant to your topic, accurate, and something your audience will care about. And, of course, be sure to cite your sources properly.

3.   Metaphor or Simile

If you want to get a little more creative with your essay hook, try using a metaphor or simile . A metaphor states that something is something else in a figurative sense, while a simile states that something is like something else.

Metaphors and similes are effective because they provide a visual for your readers, making them think about a concept in a different way. However, be careful not to make them too far-fetched or overly exaggerated.

4.   Question

Asking your audience a question is a great way to hook them. Not only does it make them think, but they’ll also want to keep reading because you will have sparked their curiosity. For example:

Regardless of whether your reader agrees with you, they’ll probably want to keep reading to find out how you will back up your claim. Just make sure your declaration isn’t too controversial, or you might scare readers away!

6.   Common Misconception

Laying out a common misconception is another useful way to hook your reader. For example:

If your readers don’t know that a common belief is actually a misconception, they’ll likely be interested in learning more. And if they are already aware, it’s probably a topic they’re interested in, so they’ll want to read more.

7.   Description

You can put your descriptive powers into action with your essay hook. Creating interesting or compelling imagery places your reader into a scene, making the words come alive.

A description can be something beautiful and appealing or emotionally charged and provoking. Either way, descriptive writing is a powerful way to immerse your audience and keep them reading.

Teaching narrative hooks is fun, and students are excited to start. Rarely does it all go perfectly; there are always students who get it, students who are almost there, and the few who need loads of scaffolding. This is true of every lesson in every class, but it can suck the fun out of writing – which is not what I want! Here are some tips to get and keep students excited and engaged when writing narrative hooks.  Narrative Writing Hooks is a resource that will provide everything you need to teach hooks like a pro!

A side note – before my students learn about hooks we have been brainstorming and planning topics for narrative writing. Usually, my students have a plot diagram filled in and even a start to the narrative. I like them to have a narrative waiting for them after I teach hooks in narrative writing so they can apply the learning immediately to their writing.

1. Introduce Narrative Hooks with Notes & Examples

Talk about fun being sucked out of a room – ask students to take notes!  Making notes quick and simple will alleviate a lot of work and provide a resource students can keep throughout the year, making it worth the effort and time.

Coloring, cutting, and gluing gives students a hands-on activity and makes writing notes less daunting and the information easily digestible.

2. Identify and Analyze Narrative Hooks – Scavenger Hunt 

After taking notes and teaching hooks in narrative writing, get students up and thinking about what narrative hooks look like in action.  It’s called a scavenger hunt, but it’s just stations set up around the room and hallway that highlight the 6 types of hooks – students don’t mind what it’s called because they hear scavenger hunt, and they are already engaged; you can grab the Narrative Writing Hooks Scavenger Hunt as part of the Narrative Writing Hooks resource here!

The students move through the stations and identify the hooks with a quick sentence that explains which hook it is and how the students know it is that type of hook.  

Then gather as a class and debrief.  Ask students to identify the hooks and discuss why the hook is effective or ineffective. There is always some discussion about hooks being more than one type, and this is important, because the hooks tend to be elements of each other.  

If there is no time for this activity, read the first few lines from the books or use the beginnings from the book in the scavenger hunt and complete the activity as a whole class.

3. Practice Narrative Hooks 

This is a favorite!!  The students have a chance to be creative and practice (I will sometimes skip the scavenger hunt and go straight to practice – I let the student’s ability guide my decision).  Suggested book: The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg, but you could use pictures from anywhere (news stories, magazines, etc).  The students are always so enchanted by the story of a man who drops off ideas for stories and then never returns.

  • Pair students or make groups of three for this activity.  
  • Introduce the book – read the introduction.
  • Hand out a picture to each group.  
  • The students choose a type of hook and write a hook for the picture. 
  • Pass pictures to the right and continue on until the groups have had a chance to practice three to four of the six narrative hook types. 

Finally, the students go around and share the group’s hook and the picture it goes with.  The other groups make guesses on which narrative hook was used.  

In the end, read the title and the one sentence that actually goes with the picture. The students will discuss which type of hook was used and if they like the hook.  This is a great time to evaluate published writers.  They are reading like writers!   

We always enjoy this lesson. As we continue through the year, I read The Chronicles of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg and fourteen other authors who decided to bring the pictures and the sentences from The Mysteries of Harris Burdick to life.   

Modify the practice lesson to fit your student’s needs.  Here is a possible modification:

  • Put students in groups of two or three.
  • Pass out one picture from The Mysteries of Harris Burdick to each group of students
  • Have the groups craft a hook 
  • Hang the hooks around the classroom next to the picture (or post in your online learning platforms – JamBoard, Padlet, etc)
  • Have classmates evaluate hooks and provide feedback.  

This modification saves time and creates an authentic audience for the student’s writing.

4. Brainstorm

As a class, brainstorm one example of each hook type on an anchor chart or pull small groups while the class works on their narratives.  Either way, having a visual in the room for each hook is always helpful and provides an opportunity to write as a class.  

Co-writing with the class is a great formative assessment.  You can quickly gauge students’ ability and comfort level with drafting hooks for narrative writing.  It also creates a writing community!  Nothing is more rewarding than producing as a class.  

Finally, brainstorming opens a final conversation about what makes a great hook.  The class talks about adding details, focusing on the plot and storyline, and thinking like a writer because they are taking the reader into consideration when they write.

5. Write Narrative Hooks

It’s time; teaching narrative hooks has led to this!!  Have the students write hooks for their narrative.  Having a plot diagram or even a draft of the narrative is essential for writing hooks because the narrative hook not only captures the reader’s attention but also introduces the reader to the story.  If you are looking for plot diagram ideas, check out the resource Plot Diagram for Narrative Writing.    

The students write three different narrative hooks for class, choosing from the notes they have taken. While students are drafting hooks, call small groups and individual students to  conference on their narrative and hooks.  Take this precious time to teach narrative hooks and fill gaps you have noticed throughout the note-taking and practice activities.  

Students complete hooks and get with a partner to share what each has written and provide positive feedback on the narrative hooks.  Finally, the students write the ‘winning’ narrative hook on an exit ticket and turn it in before leaving class.  

The ‘winning’ narrative hook on the exit ticket allows the teacher to review students learning and provide feedback for teaching narrative hooks.  

Having a chance to provide feedback is the golden ticket

  • Immediate feedback for students
  • Opportunity to plan to re-teach or provide an extension for small groups or whole class
  • Reduces grading time at the end of the writing assignment
  • Confidence in writing and ability to make changes

Tip for Hooks

Hooks are usually the last thing the students do; having the entire narrative written helps students have a complete understanding of the plot and storyline and focuses the hook. This step provides more clarity and focus for the students to write hooks.    

Take this tip a step further and have the students write a one to two-sentence summary of their plot.  This helps focus the students on the meat of the story and improves the hook.  Writing the hook AFTER the story allows the writer to be clear on how to hook the reader. 

I have questioned if teaching hooks in narrative writing this way is worth the time.  There is so much pressure to keep moving, focus on the standards, and improve scores.  Here is my mantra: “I am teaching writers, not the writing” and “I am teaching readers, not the reading.”  

The humans in front of me and their needs guide my instruction.  If pieces of this lesson are not necessary for a group of students – skip it.  If some students need the practice, use it in a small group or make it a mini-lesson during Writer’s Workshop as a review. Please use what you and your students need and leave the rest!!

Write an Attention-Grabbing Opening Sentence for an Essay

You can think of the first sentence of your essay as you would a fishing hook. It grabs your reader and allows you reel the person into your essay and your train of thought. The hook for your essay can be an interesting sentence that captures a person's attention, it can be thought-provoking, or even, entertaining.

The hook for your essay often appears in the first sentence . The opening paragraph includes a thesis sentence . Some popular hook choices can include using an interesting quote, a little-known fact, famous last words, or a statistic .

A quote hook is best used when you are composing an essay based on an author, story, or book. It helps establish your authority on the topic and by using someone else's quote, you can strengthen your thesis if the quote supports it.

The following is an example of a quote hook: "A man's errors are his portals of discovery." In the next sentence or two, give a reason for this quote or current example. As for the last sentence (the thesis) : Students grow more confident and self-sufficient when parents allow them to make mistakes and experience failure.

General statement

By setting the tone in the opening sentence with a uniquely written general statement of your thesis, the beauty is that you get right to the point. Most readers appreciate that approach.

For example, you can start with the following statement: Many studies show that the biological sleep pattern for teens shifts a few hours, which means teens naturally stay up later and feel alert later in the morning. The next sentence, set up the body of your essay, perhaps by introducing the concept that school days should be adjusted so that they are more in sync with the teenager's natural sleep or wake cycle. As for the last sentence (the thesis) :  If every school day started at ten o'clock, many students would find it easier to stay focused.

By listing a proven fact or entertaining an interesting statistic that might even sound implausible to the reader, you can excite a reader to want to know more. 

Like this hook: According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics , teens and young adults experience the highest rates of violent crime. Your next sentence can set up the argument that it's dangerous for teenagers to be on the streets at late hours. A fitting thesis statement might read: Parents are justified in implementing a strict curfew, regardless of a student's academic performance.

The Right Hook for Your Essay

The good news about finding a hook? You can find a quote, fact, or another type of hook after you determine your thesis. You can accomplish this with a simple online search about your topic after you've developed your essay .

You can nearly have the essay finished before you revisit the opening paragraph. Many writers polish up the first paragraph after the essay is completed.

Outlining the Steps for Writing Your Essay

Here's an example of the steps you can follow that help you outline your essay.

  • First paragraph: Establish the thesis
  • Body paragraphs: Supporting evidence
  • Last paragraph: Conclusion with a restatement of the thesis
  • Revisit the first paragraph: Find the best hook

Obviously, the first step is to determine your thesis. You need to research your topic and know what you plan to write about. Develop a starting statement. Leave this as your first paragraph for now.

The next paragraphs become the supporting evidence for your thesis. This is where you include the statistics, opinions of experts, and anecdotal information.

Compose a closing paragraph that is basically a reiteration of your thesis statement with new assertions or conclusive findings you find during with your research.

Lastly, go back to your introductory hook paragraph. Can you use a quote, shocking fact, or paint a picture of the thesis statement using an anecdote? This is how you sink your hooks into a reader.

The best part is if you are not loving what you come up with at first, then you can play around with the introduction. Find several facts or quotes that might work for you. Try out a few different starting sentences and determine which of your choices makes the most interesting beginning to your essay.

But what if we could give our students some tried and tested tips and strategies to show them how to start an essay?

What if we could give them various strategies they could pull out of their writer’s toolbox and kickstart their essays at any time?

In this article, we’ll look at tried and tested methods and how to start essay examples to get your students’ writing rolling with momentum to take them to their essays’ conclusion.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF AN ESSAY’S INTRODUCTION?

 Essentially, the purpose of the introduction is to achieve two things:

 1. To orientate the reader

2. To motivate the reader to keep reading.

 An effective introduction will give the reader a clear idea of what the essay will be about. To do this, it may need to provide some necessary background information or exposition.

Once this is achieved, the writer will then make a thesis statement that informs the reader of the main ‘thrust’ of the essay’s position, the supporting arguments of which will be explored throughout the body paragraphs of the remainder of the essay.

When considering how to start an essay, ensure you have a strong thesis statement and support it through well-crafted arguments in the body paragraphs . HOW TO HOOK THE READER WITH ATTENTION-GRABBING OPENING SENTENCES

We all know that every essay has a beginning, a middle , and an end . But, if our students don’t learn to grab the reader’s attention from the opening sentence, they’ll struggle to keep their readers engaged long enough to make it through the middle to the final full stop. Take a look at these five attention-grabbing sentence examples.

  • “The secret to success is hidden in a single, elusive word: persistence.”
  • “Imagine a world without electricity, where the only source of light is the flame of a candle.”
  • “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, but most importantly, it was the time that changed everything.”
  • “They said it couldn’t be done, but she proved them wrong with her grit and determination.”
  • “He stood at the edge of the cliff, staring down at the tumultuous ocean below, knowing that one misstep could mean certain death.”

Regardless of what happens next, those sentences would make any reader stop whatever else they might focus on and read with more intent than before. They have provided the audience with a “hook” intended to lure us further into their work.

To become effective essay writers, your students need to build the skill of writing attention-grabbing opening sentences. The best way of achieving this is to use ‘hooks’.

There are several kinds of hooks that students can choose from. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the most effective of these:

 1. The Attention-Grabbing Anecdote

2. The Bold Pronouncement!

3. The Engaging Fact

4. Using an Interesting Quote

5. Posing a Rhetorical Question

6. Presenting a Contrast

 How appropriate each of these hooks is will depend on the essay’s nature. Students must consider the topic, purpose, tone, and audience of the essay they’re writing before deciding how best to open it.

 Let’s look at each of these essay hooks, along with a practice activity students can undertake to put their knowledge of each hook into action.

1: HOW TO START AN ESSAY WITH “THE ATTENTION-GRABBING ANECDOTE”

 Anecdotes are an effective way for the student to engage the reader’s attention right from the start.

When the anecdote is based on the writer’s personal life, they are a great way to create intimacy between the writer and the reader from the outset.

Anecdotes are an especially useful starting point when the essay explores more abstract themes as they climb down the ladder of abstraction and fit the broader theme of the essay to the shape of the writer’s life.

Anecdotes work because they are personal, and because they’re personal, they infuse the underlying theme of the essay with emotion.

This expression of emotion helps the writer form a bond with the reader. And it is this bond that helps encourage the reader to continue reading.

Readers find this an engaging approach, mainly when the topic is complex and challenging.

Anecdotes provide an ‘in’ to the writing’s broader theme and encourage the reader to read on.

Examples of Attention-grabbing anecdotes

  • “It was my first day of high school, and I was a bundle of nerves. I had always been a shy kid, and the thought of walking into a new school, surrounded by strangers was overwhelming. But as I walked through the front doors, something unexpected happened. A senior, who I had never met before, came up to me and said ‘Welcome to high school; it’s going to be an amazing four years.’ That one small act of kindness from a complete stranger made all the difference, and from that day on, I knew that I would be okay.”
  • “I was in my math class and having a tough day. I had a test coming up, and I was struggling to understand the material. My teacher, who I had always thought was strict and unapproachable, noticed that I was struggling and asked if I needed help. I was surprised, but I took her up on her offer, and she spent extra time with me after class, helping me to understand the material. That experience taught me that sometimes, the people we think we know the least about are the ones who can help us the most.”
  • “It was the last day of 8th grade, and we were all sitting in the auditorium, waiting for the ceremony to begin. Suddenly, the principal got on stage and announced that there was a surprise guest speaker. I was confused and curious, but when the guest walked out on stage, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was my favorite rapper who had come to speak to us about the importance of education. That moment was a turning point for me, it showed me that if you work hard and believe in yourself, anything is possible.”

Attention-Grabbing Anecdote Teaching Strategies

One way to help students access their personal stories is through sentence starters, writing prompts, or well-known stories and their themes.

First, instruct students to choose a theme to write about. For example, if we look at the theme of The Boy Who Cried Wolf, something like: we shouldn’t tell lies, or people may not believe us when we tell the truth.

Fairytales and fables are great places for students to find simple themes or moral lessons to explore for this activity.

Once they’ve chosen a theme, encourage the students to recall a time when this theme was at play in their own lives. In the case above, a time when they paid the cost, whether seriously or humorously, for not telling the truth.

This memory will form the basis for a personal anecdote that will form a ‘hook’. Students can practice replicating this process for various essay topics.

It’s essential when writing anecdotes that students attempt to capture their personal voice.

One way to help them achieve this is to instruct them to write as if they were orally telling their story to a friend.

This ‘vocal’ style of writing helps to create intimacy between writer and reader, which is the hallmark of this type of opening.

2: HOW TO START AN ESSAY WITH “THE BOLD PRONOUNCEMENT”

 As the old cliché “Go big or go home!” would have it, making a bold pronouncement at the start of an essay is one surefire way to catch the reader’s attention.

Bold statements exude confidence and assure the reader that this writer has something to say that’s worth hearing. A bold statement placed right at the beginning suggests the writer isn’t going to hedge their bets or perch passively on a fence throughout their essay.

The bold pronouncement technique isn’t only useful for writing a compelling opening sentence, the formula can be used to generate a dramatic title for the essay.

For example, the recent New York Times bestseller ‘Everybody Lies’ by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz is an excellent example of the bold pronouncement in action.

Examples of Bold Pronouncements

  • “I will not be just a statistic, I will be the exception. I will not let my age or my background define my future, I will define it myself.”
  • “I will not be afraid to speak up and make my voice heard. I will not let anyone silence me or make me feel small. I will stand up for what I believe in and I will make a difference.”
  • “I will not be satisfied with just getting by. I will strive for greatness and I will not be content with mediocrity. I will push myself to be the best version of me, and I will not settle for anything less.”

Strategies for Teaching how to write a Bold Pronouncement

Give the students a list of familiar tales; again, Aesop’s Fables make for a good resource.

In groups, have them identify some tales’ underlying themes or morals. For this activity, these can take the place of an essay’s thesis statement.

Then, ask the students to discuss in their groups and collaborate to write a bold pronouncement based on the story. Their pronouncement should be short, pithy, and, most importantly, as bold as bold can be.

3: HOW TO START AN ESSAY WITH “THE ENGAGING FACT”

In our cynical age of ‘ fake news ’, opening an essay with a fact or statistic is a great way for students to give authority to their writing from the very beginning.

Students should choose the statistic or fact carefully, it should be related to their general thesis, and it needs to be noteworthy enough to spark the reader’s curiosity.

This is best accomplished by selecting an unusual or surprising fact or statistic to begin the essay with.

Examples of the Engaging Fact

  •  “Did you know that the average teenager spends around 9 hours a day consuming media? That’s more than the time they spend sleeping or in school!”
  • “The brain continues to develop until the age of 25, which means that as a teenager, my brain is still going through major changes and growth. This means I have a lot of potential to learn and grow.”
  • “The average attention span of a teenager is shorter than that of an adult, meaning that it’s harder for me to focus on one task for an extended time. This is why it is important for me to balance different activities and take regular breaks to keep my mind fresh.”

Strategies for teaching how to write engaging facts

This technique can work well as an extension of the bold pronouncement activity above.

When students have identified each of the fables’ underlying themes, have them do some internet research to identify related facts and statistics.

Students highlight the most interesting of these and consider how they would use them as a hook in writing an essay on the topic.

4: HOW TO START AN ESSAY USING “AN INTERESTING QUOTATION”

This strategy is as straightforward as it sounds. The student begins their essay by quoting an authority or a well-known figure on the essay’s topic or related topic.

This quote provides a springboard into the essay’s subject while ensuring the reader is engaged.

The quotation selected doesn’t have to align with the student’s thesis statement.

In fact, opening with a quotation the student disagrees with can be a great way to generate a debate that grasps the reader’s attention from the outset.

Examples of starting an essay with an interesting quotation.

  • “As Albert Einstein once said, ‘Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.’ As a 16-year-old student, I know how it feels to be judged by my ability to climb the “academic tree” and how it feels to be labeled as “stupid”. But just like the fish in Einstein’s quote, I know that my true potential lies in my unique abilities and talents, not in how well I can climb a tree.”
  • “Mark Twain once said, ‘Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.’ This quote resonates with me because as a teenager, I often feel pressure to conform to the expectations and opinions of my peers. But this quote reminds me to take a step back and think for myself, rather than blindly following the crowd.”
  • “As J.K. Rowling famously said, ‘It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.’ As a 16-year-old student, I often find myself getting lost in my dreams for the future and forgetting to live in the present. But this quote serves as a reminder to me to strive for my goals while also cherishing and living in the here and now.”

Teaching Strategies for starting an essay with an interesting quotation.

To gain practice in this strategy, organize the students into groups and have them generate a list of possible thesis statements for their essays.

Once they have a list of statements, they now need to generate a list of possible quotations related to their hypothetical essay’s central argument .

Several websites are dedicated to curating pertinent quotations from figures of note on an apparently inexhaustible array of topics. These sites are invaluable resources for tracking down interesting quotations for any essay.

5: HOW TO START AN ESSAY BY “POSING A RHETORICAL QUESTION”

What better way to get a reader thinking than to open with a question?

See what I did there?

Beginning an essay with a question not only indicates to the reader the direction the essay is headed in but also challenges them to respond personally to the topic.

Rhetorical questions are asked to make a point and to get the reader thinking rather than to elicit an answer.

One effective way to use a rhetorical question in an introduction is to craft a rhetorical question from the thesis statement and use it as the opening sentence.

The student can then end the opening paragraph with the thesis statement itself.

In this way, the student has presented their thesis statement as the answer to the rhetorical question asked at the outset.

Rhetorical questions also make for valuable transitions between paragraphs.

Examples of starting an essay with a rhetorical question

  • “What if instead of judging someone based on their appearance, we judged them based on their character? As a 16-year-old, I see the damage caused by judging someone based on their physical appearance, and it’s time to move away from that and focus on character.”

What exactly have you been doing for the past four years? Are you a student leader, community game-changer, future tech mogul? And then - your personal statement .

It’s not much of an exaggeration to say that this essay is the soul of your application. With 650 allotted words, you have the power to craft a captivating narrative about who you are, what you value, and most importantly - where you see yourself going. The very first sentence of your essay - commonly referred to as the ‘hook’ - is a direct invitation to the reader to walk into your world for the next few minutes. Essay hooks can also simultaneously be the hardest piece of your essay to write.

For most high school writers, composing essay hooks can take some practice. It’s hard to know what will feel appropriate for your essay, and what captures someone’s attention is so innately personal. What you find humorous or intellectual might come across to your reader as boring or overdrawn. In this blog, I’ll introduce common “hook” styles that have been successful for past students, caution against the pitfalls that many applicants fall into, and share my top strategies for practicing writing your own essay hooks .

What Types of Hooks Are There?

Open with the unexpected.

“On the day my first novel was rejected, I was baking pies.” (Hamilton)

“Not all sons of doctors raise baby ducks and chickens in their kitchen. But I do. My dad taught me.” (NYT)

Starting your essay with a contradiction or surprising juxtaposition immediately catches any reader’s intrigue. These essay hooks work well because they’re unusual, but not hyper dramatized: both of the hooks above read as genuine. There’s also an implicit sense of humor here: who catches themselves baking pies when they receive upsetting news? These hooks position the speaker as quirky, likable, and ready to offer some insight about what their unique life experiences have taught them. Simply put, this is a great way to grab your reader’s attention.

However, these types of hooks can also be more difficult to write. Unless you have a clear (or funny) story to tell from the beginning, they can be harder to write naturally. Try reflecting on the story you plan to tell: what about your identity, circumstances, or surroundings provides an insightful and unexpected angle into what you want to say? Jot down a few ideas and try several approaches before settling on your final opening line.

Details, Details, Details

“The way the light shined on her skin as she sewed the quilt emphasized the details of every wrinkle, burn and cut. While she completed the overcast stitch, the thimble on her index finger protected her from the needle pokes. She wore rings on every finger of her right hand, but on her left she only wore her wedding ring.” (NYT)

“My grandmother hovers over the stove flame, fanning it as she melodically hums Kikuyu spirituals. She kneads the dough and places it on the stove, her veins throbbing with every movement: a living masterpiece painted by a life of poverty and motherhood. The air becomes thick with smoke and I am soon forced out of the walls of the mud-brick house while she laughs.” (NYT)

Both of these opening paragraphs have successful essay hooks because they jump straight into the thick of it - there’s no time for slow building action here. They rely on the speaker’s senses, drawing from details that are visual, tactile, or auditory to draw the reader into the essay.

While both of these hooks center a female relative, the reader is ultimately learning about you: how do you perceive the world around you, what do you direct your attention towards, and what details matter to you ? This style of hook is perfect for a speaker who is insightful, self-aware, and nuanced. It’s also a great approach to showcase young writers’ creative capacities.

If you’re unsure about how to start writing this hook, try writing your essay as you see fit from start to finish. Then, look for ways to rearrange your structure - a lot of times it’s easier to find detailed imagery in the middle of an essay before moving it to the beginning. Another hint: opening with dialogue can always be a great way to jump right into the meat of your essay.

Bring a Fresh Perspective

One of my favorite personal strategies for tackling essay hooks is to bring light to something that happens every day. What’s such a normal experience of your daily occurrence that it’s led you to new insight, perspective, or thought? Do you spend every day watching Wheel of Fortune, or investigating your hands? Have you experimented with perfecting the best sandwich ever, harnessed inspiration from mowing the lawn, or made an art form out of writing moving birthday cards to your friends? Drawing focus towards moments that most people take for granted shapes your persona as a speaker - it shows you as creative, mature, and a forward-thinker.

This style of hook grabs your reader’s attention by signaling that you’re about to add a new twist on something that’s already established and it maintains a high level of authenticity, too. A lot of students writing their essays will try to talk about something big that makes them seem impressive - but actually, zoning in for the “small” moments that have been meaningful to you showcases more of your positive qualities as an applicant, and better demonstrates who you are.

If All Else Fails - Try Going Simple

“I always assumed my father wished I had been born a boy.” (NYT)

What’s the bare-bones, unshakable truth of your essay? This hook is effective because it’s moving - it speaks to the essay’s truth, and foreshadows content (the speaker’s relationship with her father, gender expectations and/or dynamics, navigating assumptions). In this case, simple is better: in one sentence, the speaker is able to distill the emotional core of her essay. The speaker’s voice reads as reflective, mature, and confident - she’s not afraid to be vulnerable, and has a clear voice.

This approach is perfect for students who aren’t sure what strategy might work for them, because it’s easy to tell when you’ve been successful. Try writing a single sentence that captures the emotional weight of your essay - then read it back to yourself (and others!). Do you have chills? Great - keep writing.

Common Pitfalls

You can’t win an oscar.

“Blood-soaked. 3am.”

Okay, there are two things that need to be addressed here. First - this is not a screenplay! You don’t need a shot-by-shot action take. Secondly - this is not the type of detail (or imagery) that’s going to work in your favor. While I’m a proponent for the “detailed” approach to hooking your audience, this isn’t quite what admissions officers are looking for. The essay in this case is actually about playing video games, so the dramatic (and violent) start is unnecessary. It also feels a little cheap - as if the speaker is trying too hard to grab the reader’s attention without putting thought into the impact of their words.

You Don’t Have to Prove Yourself

Please don’t open your essay with a really convoluted, philosophical, or critical outlook on the state of humankind, technology, or any other large-scale topics. Sure, you want to seem intellectually curious and come across as a deep thinker, but it shouldn’t feel contrived. Worst of all, these essays aren’t about you . The college essay isn’t the time to try and prove your intellectual prowess - it’s a space for introspection and mature reflection. By forcing your (intense) opinions on a reader, you come across as arrogant. What can colleges teach someone who is proclaiming to already know everything?

Use Your Own Words

While I’m sure there have been many works - poems, songs, memoirs, or plays - that have had a vast impact on your personal development, your reader wants to know more about you , not a writer that’s already established. Using quotes as essay hooks is a huge risk. For me, it elicits an immediate sigh and (depending on the quote), eye roll.

You’re Not En(titled) to Do This

If you only have 650 words to make your mark: don’t use a title! It’s a waste of space that disrupts your essay’s formatting and seems uninformed. Titling your essay isn’t a part of the personal statement’s typical conventions, so it’s completely unnecessary. Thumbs down.

How To Write Your Own Essay Hooks

So, how do you create your own?

Here are my best suggestions:

  • Try several points of entry. Different styles are going to work with different students - it’s going to depend on your writing style, personality, sense of humor, experience with creative or reflective writing, and what your essay is about. Not everything will land the way you want it to - but that’s okay! Try writing essay hooks that model each of the styles above. Which feels most sincere for your piece and most true to you?
  • Get feedback - the right kind. While too many different critics can agitate the writing process, feedback is important. Try a peer share or mini writing seminar with some of your friends - you all have to write essays, after all. Why not do it together? Try sharing a few different hooks and see what works best for your crowd. Make sure you keep your sanity by not sharing too much of your essay - just the pieces that you truly want feedback on. Most importantly, make sure you know when to incorporate the feedback, and when to use your best judgment and keep something you believe is an essential part of your essay.
  • Write, write, write. It’s not fair to assume that because essay hooks come first, that you must write it first. That’s almost never the case! I personally always draft introductions before the rest of any piece, then circle back at the end to rewrite the beginning. You may have to keep writing before you land your point of entry - that’s how it should be!

Middle School Writing Samples

When I started my first job as a professional newspaper reporter (This job also served as an internship during my junior year in college — I just didn’t leave for about 6 years.), I quickly realized that all my experience, and all my years of journalism education had not been enough to help me write stories about drug busts, fatal car accidents and tornadoes. All the theoretical work I’d done, and all of the nifty little scholastic and collegiate stories I had done, did not prepare me for real world writing.

At that point, I had to find a solution quickly. After all, I had a deadline to meet, and it was only a few hours away.

One of my colleagues, who also served as a mentor, had the solution. She introduced me to the newspaper’s “morgue.” This was a room filled with filing cabinets in which we kept old — dead — stories arranged by reporter. Whenever I wasn’t’ sure how to write a story, all I had to do was check the morgue for similar stories. If I needed to write a story about a local drug bust, for example, I’d find another story on a similar incident, study its structure, and mentally create a formula in which to plugin the information I’d gathered.

Once I’d gained more experience, and had internalized the formula for that particular type of story, I felt free to branch out as the situation — and my training — warranted.

I do the same thing when I want to write a type of letter, brochure, or report that I’ve never written before.

This is what writing looks like in the real world.

Of course, if you’re a new teacher like me, there is one problem with providing mentor texts to my students: I have a dearth of middle school level writing sitting around in my file cabinets.

Fortunately, the Internet is full of sources, so I scoured the bowels of Google to find examples. I know how busy you are, so I’m sharing.

Let’s Stop Asking Students to Start Every Essay With a “Hook”

Because writing an essay is hard enough.

Hooks for Essays Are Overrated

I’ve had my share of reluctant writers in my classroom, including a student who wrote nothing the first three months of the school year. I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often, if I’m honest, given how complex writing can be.

Many adults find writing challenging for the same reason students do: writing requires a lot of the writer. You have to think up what you want to write, organize your thinking, and then hold it in your mind while you put it on the page in the right order. Oh, and at the same time you also have to remember to include all that capitalization, punctuation, grammar and spelling. Compared with speaking, writing is basically a series of cognitive backflips.

Just getting started on an essay or other writing assignment is often where students struggle the most. Take every reason why writing is so difficult and magnify it by the emotions students bring to the table when a task is difficult. No wonder students dawdle, resist and even hide in the bathroom when it’s time to write.

Requiring hooks for essays often adds to the challenge of writing

Then there’s this thing that we do as teachers, which doesn’t help matters: we require students to write a creative and catchy first sentence called a “hook.”

I understand why we require hooks for essays. We want our students to think about their audience and practice writing engaging first sentences. I don’t disagree with hooks on their own, as they do strive to teach key skills.

The problem is that we ask students to write these hooks on top of a lot of other writing demands. When we require a hook first thing, we are basically saying, “You can’t move on until you write something creative and engaging!” Should we be surprised they get frustrated and stuck?

But I teach my students how to write hooks!

In an effort to support students with writing hooks for essays, we give them ideas and templates. We encourage them to use a quote or ask a question. What ends up happening, though, is that a majority of students end up writing the same three hooks. (Google “hook essay ideas” and you will see what I mean.)

A few students are great at writing hooks, but I suspect they are simply great at writing. Otherwise, we get 25 variations on “Have you ever had to tell a friend bad news?” It’s almost the opposite outcome of what we are trying to teach.

How to get students started writing without a freakout

1. eliminate the hook.

Again, I understand the intent of teaching hooks for essays, but requiring them feels like a tacked-on challenge given everything else we throw at our students when we ask them to write. While it’s a nice skill to have, very few real-life writing tasks require you to razzle-dazzle your audience first thing.

What if you spent that instructional time making sure students have the fundamentals? A straightforward topic sentence sounds boring, I get it, but do your students know how to write one? Do they know how to take that sentence and go further with the topic adding context and relevant details? Take stock of what you really want students to know how to do and it might shift how you spend your teaching time.

2. Teach hooks separately

Part of my frustration with hooks is that they paralyze many young writers before they’ve even started writing. While I want my students to thoughtfully engage their audience, it’s more important to me they can consistently begin drafting what they want to say. That’s hard to do if they feel stuck on the first sentence.

One way to diffuse the emotion around hooks is to teach them separately from the essay itself. Give students random and even silly topics and have them brainstorm possible first sentences. With space to focus on enticing prospective readers, students are more likely to come up with the kind of creative, out-of-the-box first sentences you know they are capable of writing.

3. Give extra credit for good hooks

Consider giving extra credit for a compelling hook rather than making it a required element. This will encourage students to write hooks, but not penalize those students who find them difficult. Another option is to think about how you might teach students to write the hook last, as a finishing touch rather than a first step.

5 Tips and Examples for Crafting a Great Hook

Your essay is one of the best tools available for standing out in a crowded field of college applicants (many with academic portfolios similar to yours) when applying to your dream school. A college essay is your opportunity to show admissions committees the person behind the grades, test scores, and resume. To ensure your college essay receives the full attention of admissions committees, you need to lure them in with a great hook—that is, a compelling opening that makes your audience hungry for more.

You need a strong start to capture the attention of the admission committees. When it comes to college essays, first impressions are everything. In fact, there’s no guarantee that anyone is going to read more than your first sentence if you bore them to tears within a few words, which is why it’s essential to craft an effective and engaging hook.

There’s no one-size-fits-all strategy for composing an attention-grabbing hook. A well-crafted hook can be anything from an image to an anecdote to an interesting fact while factors like writing style, essay structure, and prompt can all influence what makes for a good hook. That said, memorable hooks share a number of attributes, most notably they draw readers in,  connect with the topic you’re writing about, and leave a lasting impression, often in a creative or unexpected way.

For example, let’s construct a hypothetical essay. Let’s say that after some careful consideration, Jane Doe has decided to write her personal essay about her experience running canine obedience classes. She isn’t quite sure how to start her essay, so she’s practicing with some proven essay hooks. College Essay Hook Examples

There are a number of proven strategies that Jane can use to craft a compelling hook. A few tried-and-true hooks include:

1. Open with an Anecdote

People love stories, so it makes sense that telling one is a great way to attract readers. Detailing a relevant anecdote provides context for your essay and can give the reader an idea of what you are up against if you’re overcoming an obstacle or rising to a challenge.

On the day that I told my mother I wanted to start my own canine obedience school, she smiled and muttered something under her breath about the irony of my youthful disobedience and my newfound passion for enforcing rules. What she didn’t know then was that it was not in spite of, but rather because of, my tendency to push the boundaries that I was confident in my ability to succeed.

2. Set the Scene

One fantastic way to get your essay moving and to draw your readers in is to plunge them into the middle of an important scene. Provide readers with descriptive details and dialogue to make them feel like they’re watching a movie from your life and have just tuned in at a critical moment.

I jumped back as the dog lunged for my leg, teeth bared and snarling. “It’s okay, Smokey, it’s okay,” I soothed as I tried to maneuver closer to the post where I had tied his leash. In the back of my head, I heard my brother’s taunts swirling around.

“A dog trainer?” he had scoffed. “What kind of person would hire you as a dog trainer?!”

I pushed the thoughts away and grasped the leash, pulling it tightly to my side as Smokey, surprised by my sudden confidence, fell into stride beside me.

3. Ask a Question

Asking a question at the beginning of your essay can activate your reader’s critical thinking and get them hungry for the answer that you won’t offer until later. Try to come up with a question that’s broad enough that they won’t know the answer right away, but specific enough that it isn’t a generic hook that could work on just any college essay.

How do you respond when you’re faced with a very real physical threat to your safety, yet you literally can’t afford to back down? This is the question I faced on my very first day as a dog trainer.

4. Use a Metaphor or Simile

A metaphor or simile can pull readers in by helping them make connections between seemingly unrelated topics or by encouraging them to think about topics from a different point of view.

Running canine obedience classes is a lot like navigating high school. It’s a dog-eat-dog world with a lot to learn, many personalities to manage, peril around every corner, and everyone anxious to graduate.

Selecting the right hook is a great first step for writing a winning college essay, but the execution is also important.

1. Narrow Down Your Scope

Sometimes the best way to tackle big projects like writing an attention-grabbing hook or captivating college essay is to think small. Narrow down on a specific incident or even a moment that leads into your topic.

It’s my first time teaching a canine obedience class. I’m surrounded by strangers and the dogs are barking so loud I can’t hear myself think, but I have a gnawing feeling that I’m losing control. I put my fingers to my lips and let out the loudest whistle I’m capable of. Suddenly there was silence.

2. Use Adjectives

Adjectives are used to add a description and make your writing clearer and more specific. In other words, they’re the details that make your writing stand out and suck readers in. Jane didn’t simply reward the dog for sitting, she…

It was a battle of wills between me and the eight-month-old Australian Shepherd—defiance was in his sparkling blue eyes, but so was desire for the bit of hot dog hiding in my hand. Reluctantly he sat, earning his treat while I claimed my alpha status.

3. Use Emotion

Use emotion to connect and entice your reader. Emotions make readers feel, pulling them into your essay, and are memorable. You can use them for everything from sharing a fact about yourself to putting the reader in your shoes.

When I was young, I would have been extremely lonely if not for my dog Trevor. I struggled to make friends and Trevor provided companionship, helped me overcome my shyness (he was a great icebreaker), and is responsible for shaping who I am today. When Trevor passed away in high school, I set out to train canine obedience and help dogs become the best versions of themselves—just like what Trevor did for me.

4. Short and Sweet

Admissions committees have a lot of essays to read, so the quicker you get to the point and capture their attention, the better.

Mere moments into my dream job, someone had already peed on the floor and another had bitten a person. Welcome to the life of a dog trainer.

5. Just Start Writing

Sometimes the hook of your college essay isn’t clear. Rather than getting hung up, start developing your essay and see if it adds clarity as to how to best implement a hook. Some students even find that it’s easiest to write a hook last, after writing the body of the personal statement.

Imagine yourself reading an article or an essay. Have you ever noticed that the first 2-3 lines set your entire mood? Either it looks interesting, or you might want to skip it. The same is true when someone reads your essay. This is why learning how to write a hook statement for an essay is crucial, and in this guide, I'll be sharing my process to help you write effective hook statements on your own.

I use a few simple steps for writing hook statements that help me craft an effective hook to engage readers and compel them to read further. Along with these steps, I also rely on writing tools, specifically WPS Office , which helps me significantly in writing a good hook. So, let's have a look at the process of learning how to write a hook for your essay, with a few examples.

1.Create an outline

First and foremost, you need to create an outline for your essay. This means your hook needs to be based on the information you plan to communicate through your essay. It's essential to lay the groundwork. Creating an outline helps you organize your thoughts and ensures your hook aligns perfectly with the rest of your essay.

Brainstorming:

To begin with your outline, start by brainstorming, where you can write down all the points you believe you can include in your essay. I usually carry out this step in WPS Writer, where I can type down all the important points I want to include in my essay. For example, let's say you're writing an essay about the impact of social media on mental health. Your main points might include:

To further assist me in this process, I use WPS AI to help brainstorm ideas. A fresh perspective is always welcome, and when you're short on ideas, these suggestions can really enhance your essay.

Identify the Angle:

Once we have the main points, it's time to decide on the specific perspective or argument you want to present. This is where you'll start to shape your essay's unique voice. For instance, if your topic is social media, you might choose to focus on its double-edged nature, arguing that while it offers unprecedented connectivity, it also poses significant risks to mental well-being if not used mindfully.

Sketch the Structure:

With your main points and angle in mind, outline the basic structure of your essay. This doesn't need to be elaborate – a simple roadmap will do.

Your structure might look something like this:

Introduction (including your hook)

Brief history of social media's rise

Positive impacts on connectivity

Negative effects on mental health

Strategies for balanced use

Having this structure in place will help you craft a hook that seamlessly leads into the rest of your essay.

Keep it Focused:

Resist the temptation to cover everything in your thesis. A focused thesis is easier to argue effectively and helps keep your essay on track.

3.Write your Hook

Now for the exciting part – crafting your hook! Remember, the goal is to captivate your reader from the very first sentence. Let's look at some examples of different hook types we discussed earlier and break down why they work.

Example 1: The Question Hook

"Have you ever caught yourself mindlessly scrolling through your social media feed, only to look up and realize hours have passed?"

This hook works because it:

Directly engages the reader by asking a question

Relates to a common experience many readers can identify with

Introduces the topic of social media usage subtly

By posing this question, you're inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences, creating an immediate connection to your topic.

Example 2: The Statistic Hook

"In 2023, the average person spent 2 hours and 31 minutes per day on social media platforms – that's over 38 days a year scrolling, liking, and sharing."

This hook is effective because it:

Presents a surprising or shocking statistic

Immediately quantifies the impact of social media on our lives

Sets the stage for a discussion on the significance of social media use

Statistics like this grab attention by putting abstract concepts into concrete, relatable terms that can surprise or even shock your readers.

Example 3: The Anecdote Hook

"As I watched my teenage daughter burst into tears over a single Instagram post, I realized social media was no longer just a fun pastime – it had become a powerful force shaping her self-image and mental health."

This hook works well because it:

Tells a brief, relatable story

Evokes emotion and empathy

Introduces the theme of social media's impact on mental health through a personal lens

Here is what you need to know about distinguishing generative AI content versus human-written ... [+] content, and the fakery involved at times.

In today’s column, I am going to mindfully tackle a controversial topic about generative AI that will somewhat extraordinarily turn the heated matter on its head. The result is nearly comical in some ways but avidly reveals sobering considerations of quite useful value. Hang in there, this will all be worth it. The crux of this analysis has to do with the now classic question of distinguishing human-written text from text that was produced by generative AI.

It’s a big issue.

A really, really, big issue.

Let’s unpack it.

The Trouble With Generative AI As Your Ghostwriter

We normally hear about the problem of using generative as your ghostwriter in the context of schools and coursework. A student opts to use generative AI to write their essay for them. The student sneakily turns in the paper, hoping the teacher will not be the wiser. Sometimes the student manages to get away with it, scot-free. Sometimes the student gets caught. It all depends.

This is not solely a problem within a school-related context. A person at work is assigned the task of writing an important report by their boss. Rather than writing the report by hand, the person instead has generative AI write the entire report for them. They give the report to their boss. If the person is lucky, they don’t get caught and avoid potentially being fired for their transgression.

The work setting does seem a bit different than the school setting. In school, the student is supposed to be learning and ergo the presumption is that the student is undercutting their own education by using generative AI to do their schoolwork for them. We don’t want students to essentially cheat on their education.

As an aside, there is rampant confusion on this matter, namely, you can, in fact, have students suitably use generative AI in the right way at the right time, and therefore exhortations about potentially banning generative AI outrightly from schools are short-sighted, untenable, and a regrettably foolhardy approach though it seems to keep coming up, again and again. Back to the use case in the workplace. The work-related transgression is perhaps more so that the worker failed to alert their boss that they were seeking to write the report via generative AI. The boss might have approved of such an approach. Furthermore, another issue could be that the worker is unaware of the need to double-check the generative AI after the report has been generated. This is an essential act.

Here's why double-checking is crucial. I’ve covered the now famous or infamous case of the two lawyers who used generative AI to write a legal briefing, which got them in hot water by a judge when the briefing turned out to have falsehoods produced by the generative AI (the lawyers had not dutifully double-checked). Generative AI readily produces fictitious output that appears to be factual, a facet commonly referred to as AI hallucinations or said-to-be falsehoods, see the link here . Please note that I disfavor the catchphrase of AI hallucinations since it anthropomorphizes AI. In any case, the phrase has gained popularity, and the essence is apt that you must be wary of all essays and outputs arising from generative AI.

All in all, people of any age and in all walks of life might readily opt to use generative AI to do their writing for them. In the wrong circumstances, this is considered a no-no. In other circumstances, the act of using generative AI as your authoring tool might be acceptable, assuming that you are aboveboard about it. For example, many news outlets and journals require that works authored by generative AI are to be explicitly labeled as such.

The ethics and legal blurring of this is underway such that not everyone is upfront and at times hides the authorship to prevent you from realizing what is afoot. A news outlet might for example assign a fake name that represents their use of generative AI. If you later ask whether the item was written by generative AI, they might say that yes, of course, everyone knows that the fake name is an obvious reference to the AI.

Wink-wink attempts at plausible deniability ensue.

Modes Of Writing And The Unreliable Eyeball Detection Method

Because of the concerns that people sometimes opt to have generative AI be their ghostwriter, there is an entire cottage industry now of automated detection tools that purportedly detect whether content has been devised by the human hand versus via generative AI. There are a lot of myths about the capabilities of these detection tools, oftentimes pushed as a silver bullet by the industrial complex and others that want to make you believe that the tools are the height of perfection.

I will be sharing with you the ugly underbelly of these at-times scams or charades.

Before we can get into that aspect, we need to explore what I refer to as the eyeball detection method. I’ll first unpack the role of human eyeballing of content to assess whether the content was human-written or devised by generative AI. No automated tools are invoked, and instead, a person examines an essay and decides who or what the author might be.

Let’s start at the beginning, namely that content can be written in these two ways:

  • (1) Human-written content (HWC).
  • (2) Generative AI generated content (AIGC).

Some proclaim they can easily determine which is which by purely manual inspection alone.

For example, sadly, there are teachers who brazenly believe they can discern whether an essay was written by a student versus via the use of generative AI. The teacher will look for clues such as vocabulary words that seem outside the range of the student. After reading the essay, such teachers will insist that they can identify who or what wrote the content.

Unfortunately, those emboldened teachers are often wrong in their guesses.

A research study entitled “Do Teachers Spot AI? Evaluation The Detectability Of AI-Generated Texts Among Student Essays” by Johanna Fleckenstein, Jennifer Meyer, Thorben Jansen, Stefan D. Keller, Olaf Köller, and Jens Möller, Computers And Education: Artificial Intelligence , June 2024, made these important points (excerpts):

  • “Generative AI can simulate student essay writing in a way that is undetectable for teachers.”
  • “Teachers are overconfident in their source identification.”
  • “AI-generated essays tend to be assessed more positively than student-written texts.”
  • “In summary, the finding that teachers cannot differentiate between student-written texts and AI-generated texts underscores the need for a thoughtful and ethical integration of AI in education. It calls for a reevaluation of assessment practices, increased awareness of AI's capabilities and limitations, and a focus on student skills that AI cannot easily replace.”

Teachers can readily be fooled.

The crux usually to the teacher being fooled is that an astute student using generative AI can simply instruct the AI to write in the same manner as they do. The resulting essay appears as if it is student-written and can trick unknowing teachers into falsely believing the student wrote the content. This would be considered a false negative in experimental lingo (the teacher failed to discern that an essay was written by generative AI and ergo gives credit undeservedly to a student).

I’d like to augment the two ways of writing content by noting that the AIGC has an additional two subcomponents (labeled here as 2a and 2b):

  • 2a. Default prompt . Tell generative AI to write as generative AI conventionally does (the default).
  • 2b. Directive prompt. Tell generative AI to write as a human would write (invoke a persona, see my coverage at the link here and the link here ).

If the person using generative AI to do their ghostwriting uses a conventional prompt, the AI will use whatever default wording is customarily being used in that AI app. On the other hand, if the person realizes they want the content to seem less likely AI-written, they can merely indicate to the AI to mimic the style of say a high school student, a college student, a middle school student, or whichever form of a person or persona they wish to invoke.

Now that I’ve got you in the mental sphere that it is readily possible and extraordinarily easy to instruct generative AI to write in various fashions or styles, let’s keep going on that tack.

Suppose that we opt to use generative AI as a rewriting tool. The idea is that we will take content and ask the AI to rewrite the material. This could be a conniving means of disguising the original writer or source of the content.

Consider these two possibilities:

  • (i) Tell generative AI to rewrite a generative AI essay to look like it was human-written.
  • (ii) Tell generative AI to rewrite a human-written essay to look like it was written by generative AI.

The first of those two would be the use case of someone who has produced a generative AI essay, realizes they will get nabbed if they turn it in, and decides to just go ahead and have the AI rewrite it to appear as if human-written. This is similar to the use case of having the AI write content from scratch and telling the AI to make it look human-written. This is a step afterward if you perchance forgot to tell the AI to write it that way at the get-go.

The second of those two use cases is a bit strange to conceive of. The mind-bending idea is that someone might tell generative AI to rewrite a human-written essay and make it look as though it was written by generative AI. I’ll get more into this momentarily, so go ahead and ponder this intriguing notion for a bit, thanks.

There are more twists and turns to be had in all of this.

One twist entails the act of making modifications to written content.

We ought to include these distinct possibilities:

  • (I) Human-written content with generative AI modifications made (have AI clean-up for you).
  • (II) Generative AI written content with manual human modifications made (make it seem more human-like).

In essence, the content becomes a blend of both human-written and generative AI material.

A lot of people don’t seem to realize that this is yet another easy variation within this whole concoction. You might be inspecting content that is partially written by human hand and partially written by generative AI.

The first instance entails the act of having generative AI polish or otherwise modify a human-written essay. To some degree, everyday word processing packages tend to do this already. A person can have word processing provide advice on spelling, replacement of words for other words, and so on.

A full-on use of generative AI is somewhat larger in scope and can essentially demonstrably modify the initial content. A teacher can find themselves accusing a student of using generative AI to write the essay due to seemingly telltale clues that generative AI was involved in the process. Do you think it is fair that if the student merely had generative AI do some minor polishing, akin to what happens in common word processing packages, the student is to be dinged for doing so?

The second instance is the sneakier of the two, maybe. For example, a student produces an essay via generative AI. The student examines the essay and discerns that despite the AI mimicking a human writing style, there are portions that still might stick out like a sore thumb. The student proceeds to change those portions by hand, perhaps using simpler words or making the sentences less semantically complex. Voila, the otherwise generative AI essay now looks even more so as though it was student-written.

I want to make sure you can plainly see how confounding all of this is.

Let’s add two more subcomponents to the structure of things, doing so as 1a and 1b:

  • (1) Human-written content (HWC) .
  • 1a. Rewrite AI . Human rewrites a generative AI essay to look like it was human-written.
  • 1b. Write like AI . Human writes or rewrites a human-written essay to look like it was written by generative AI.
  • (2) Generative AI generated content (AIGC) .

I’ve given you above an example of the 1a instance, namely that a person might rewrite a generative AI essay so that the essay appears to have been human-written.

The second instance or 1b seems oddly curious. A person decides to write an essay that looks as though it is written by generative AI. Why would anyone do this? The overarching assumption is that no one wants their writing to look as though it was done by AI. You want credit for your own writing. If you write as though the writing smacks of AI, people are going to start pointing fingers at you and denounce you for cheating.

Buckle up for a surprise about the matter.

Are you ready?

I’d like to reword 1b as follows: “Human writes a human-written essay that looks like it was written by generative AI.” I removed the intent.

Here’s the rub.

Suppose that someone writes in their normal way of writing, and they aren’t intending to appear to write as generative AI does. So, I am saying they are just writing as they tend to write. Period. But someone else who reads the content falsely believes the essay was written by AI. They are triggered by what they believe to be AI-powered writing, even though this didn’t at all occur in this instance.

This is the dreaded “false positive” that students and others are often faced with. I get emails and responses from readers that they have been falsely accused of using generative AI. Their scholastic pursuits can be totally smeared by this. It is very hard to fight such an accusation, assuming that it is indeed a false case. How do you “prove” that you didn’t use generative AI?

The problem is muddled since there are real instances of people who cheat and use generative AI, while there are false-claimed instances of people having used generative AI when they did not. Society right now assumes that a student or person couldn’t write as well as generative AI, thus, any good writing that seems out of place is instantly labeled as a generative AI essay.

Let’s not be so quick to judge.

Part of the reason why someone might write like generative AI is that more and more people are using generative AI on a regular basis. The thing is that your writing can start to mimic the writing of generative AI.

Yes, after you see a slew of generative AI essays, it is possible to start picking up the patterns associated with generative AI writing.

I realize this seems upside down, or maybe it is the completion of a somewhat bendy cycle. We have generative AI that is based on patterns of how humans write. Next thing you know, we have humans patterning how generative AI writes. But that is sensible in the manner of admiring the writing of generative AI that in a gestalt way has mathematically and computationally figured out the “best” way to write as per a massive examination of how humans write.

Detection Tools Tend To Be Misleadingly Portrayed

If eyeballing an essay won’t necessarily be reliable in identifying human writing versus generative AI, headlines boldly urge you to use automated detection tools.

Turns out a lot of these detection tools are either hogwash or principally smoke-and-mirrors, but most people don’t realize they need to be careful and understand what the tools can attain. You should scrutinize the likelihood of false positives and false negatives. At times, the vendors treat those factors as low-key and bury the details in their licensing agreements.

A common and upsetting approach is that a school or entity will decide to adopt a detection tool and act as though it is a perfect detection device. Little if any qualms are expressed. The users such as teachers are not given any heads-up about the downsides. Just go ahead and run essays through the tool and proceed to believe without hesitation whatever the tool spits out.

It is tempting to fall into that trap. The detection tools are presumed to be a labor savings mechanism. No need to eyeball an essay. Run it through the tool. See what the tool says and proceed accordingly. No fuss, no muss.

Why aren’t the detection tools able to be fully accurate?

For the very same reasons that I cited above about eyeballing of essays, which, you saw is not an ironclad means of making these assessments.

The tools tend to rely upon spotting the use of words and the phrasing of sentences that are frequently used by generative AI apps. A computational and mathematical analysis of an essay is undertaken. The writing is compared to what generative AI tends to produce.

In a recent research paper on trying to use AI to detect AI-based writing, entitled “Monitoring AI-Modified Content at Scale: A Case Study on the Impact of ChatGPT on AI Conference Peer Reviews” by Weixin Liang, Zachary Izzo, Yaohui Zhang, Haley Lepp, Hancheng Cao, Xuandong Zhao, Lingjiao Chen, Haotian Ye, Sheng Liu, Zhi Huang, Daniel A. McFarland, James Y. Zou, arXiv, March 11, 2024, the researchers made these points (excerpts):

  • “Human capability to discern AI-generated text from human-written content barely exceeds that of a random classifier, heightening the risk that unsubstantiated generated text can masquerade as authoritative, evidence-based writing.”
  • “We present an approach for estimating the fraction of text in a large corpus which is likely to be substantially modified or produced by a large language model (LLM).”
  • “Our maximum likelihood model leverages expert-written and AI-generated reference texts to accurately and efficiently examine real-world LLM-use at the corpus level.”

I bring up this study to highlight how there are various words more likely to be found in generative AI writing and therefore are presumed to be a means to detect that an essay might be AI-generated.

This study, akin to others of a similar ilk, identified for example various adjectives and adverbs that tend to be used with a heightened frequency by generative AI apps. The paper lists some Top 100 sets of words, which I thought you might like to see a sample of them.

A sampling of the identified Top 100 adjectives disproportionately used by AI:

  • “Commendable, innovative, meticulous, intricate, notable, versatile, noteworthy, invaluable, pivotal, potent, fresh, ingenious, cogent, ongoing, tangible, profound, methodical, laudable, lucid, appreciable, fascinating, adaptable, admirable, refreshing, proficient, intriguing, thoughtful, credible, exceptional, etc.”

A sampling of the identified Top 100 adverbs disproportionately used by AI:

  • “Meticulously, reportedly, lucidly, innovatively, aptly, methodically, excellently, compellingly, impressively, undoubtedly, scholarly, strategically, intriguingly, competently, intelligently, hitherto, thoughtfully, profoundly, undeniably, admirably, creatively, logically, markedly, thereby, contextually, distinctly, judiciously, cleverly, invariably, etc.

Ponder those words, just for a few seconds or so.

Remember that I mentioned that you can tell generative AI to write as though a human is writing an essay?

If you give that kind of a prompt, one thing the generative AI can potentially do is aim to not use those Top 100 words or at least use them rather judiciously. By doing so, any detection tool that assumes those words are a likely basis for determining whether the content is written by generative AI will be possibly fooled. The counts of words that are in the Top 100 will be low, thus the program will likely give a lowered estimate of the content being written by AI.

All of this is a continual cat-and-mouse gambit.

Generative AI gets better at writing as though something is human-written. Imagine that the detection tools are behind the times and the essays are rated as more likely to be human-written than AI written. The vendors of the detection tools upgrade their wares. The odds of detecting AI writing go up. Meanwhile, the generative AI gets better at downplaying the AI writing style. The tools are again less able to make detections.

Round and round this goes.

A recent analysis of detection methods called out the difficulty associated with this ongoing cat-and-mouse gambit, as noted in a research paper entitled “Hiding the Ghostwriters: An Adversarial Evaluation of AI-Generated Student Essay Detection” by Xinlin Peng, Ying Zhou†, Ben He, Le Sun, and Yingfei Sun, arXiv , February 1, 2024, per these salient points (excerpts):

  • “Large language models (LLMs) have exhibited remarkable capabilities in text generation tasks.”
  • “However, the utilization of these models carries inherent risks, including but not limited to plagiarism, the dissemination of fake news, and issues in educational exercises.”
  • “Efforts have been made to address these concerns by developing detectors for identifying AI generated content (AIGC).”
  • “AIGC detection attack refers to deceiving or evading AIGC detection through carefully crafted prompts or paraphrasing attacks, which aims to exploit vulnerabilities or limitations in the detection algorithms to evade detection or mislead the system into classifying AI-generated content as human-generated or vice versa.”
  • “The results highlight the inherent vulnerabilities in existing detection methods and emphasize the need for the development of more resilient and precise approaches.”

One other final point before we move on.

You might be scratching your head and wondering if we could watermark essays that are produced by generative AI.

Those of you old enough to remember would recall that a classic technique for pictures, images, and the like would be to embed a watermark into the material. Then, if there was a dispute about the owner or author, it was possible to dig into the content to see if there was a watermark there.

The use of watermarks for digital content involving graphics or images is somewhat tenable because it is relatively easier to embed a watermark. They are generally hard for others to find and remove or find and change. Once again, this is a continual cat-and-mouse gambit. New methods of digital watermarking are figured out, and those who wish to defeat them are able to figure out ways to do so. On and on this loop occurs.

Watermarking of text is a lot tougher proposition.

Note that when you watermark a graphic item, this is usually done in a hidden manner, deep within the digital guts and bits and bytes of the item. There is essentially no difference from the normal eye of what the image or picture seems to be. Text is a different beast.

To watermark text, you typically need to seed certain words or phrases into the essay. A person reading the essay will presumably read the text in an ordinary fashion and expect that the text is entirely about whatever topic is at hand. To keep them from figuring out that there is a watermark here or there, the text must be carefully calculated to fit within the context of the text. You can’t just drop into the middle of an essay some bizarre sentence or plop a few oddball words as an attempt at watermarking the content. If you do so, the gig is up. I’ve covered these tactics at the link here.

Suppose that a watermarking scheme for text-based content was nearly invisible in the sense that the essay was almost semantically the same as if it didn’t contain the watermark. Yay, watermark success.

The biggest downfall is that a person can take an essay and opt to modify or rewrite the text, and doing so could readily mess up the watermarks. They might not have any idea what portion of the text a watermark is. Nonetheless, by moving around words, substituting words, adding words, and so on, they are likely to at some point be scrambling the watermark.

Digital watermarking and generative AI are a trending and rapidly evolving topic.

There are pressures underway to legally require AI makers to include watermarking as part and parcel of their generative AI apps, see my coverage at the link here . The belief is that this will aid in distinguishing what is produced by generative AI versus by the human hand. Regrettably, oftentimes lawmakers and regulators aren’t aware of how readily these can be defeated, especially in the case of text-based outputs. The result is that a strident push for watermarks can occur that is based on an outsized belief of what this will actually accomplish.

The viewpoint of some is that even if watermarks can be tricked, at least it is better to have them legally required versus not having them. For my in-depth analysis of the upsides and downsides, see the link here .

When You Want To Make Your Writing Look Like Generative AI

I have walked you through the whole kit and kaboodle about generative AI content versus by-hand content. My hope is that the quick tour was instructive and engaging. As your reward for having gone on that arduous journey, let’s do something that very few talk about.

First, grab a glass of fine wine and ready yourself for some useful fun.

Suppose you wanted to compose an essay that seemed to be written by generative AI.

Could you do so?

Yes, I would say you most certainly can.

All you need to do is mimic generative AI. I’m not saying that you need to somehow dive into the mathematical and computational formulations of generative AI. Nope, no need to do so. What you need to do is study the essays generated by AI. Mimic those essays and the writing style being used.

We are turning the world on its head. The rest of the world is focused on not writing like generative AI. You are supposed to write as a human would write. If you write like generative AI, you will be accused of having used generative AI.

Furthermore, if you go onto social media and online forums, and if you write in the style of generative AI, the odds are that you will be accused of being generative AI. Tons of AI chatbots are spewing content onto online arenas. Nobody can be sure if posted content is by a human being versus AI.

Be cautious because once you are labeled by the wisdom of the crowd as being generative AI, you might have a devil of a time proving otherwise. No matter what pictures or videos you provide to show proof of humanness will seemingly further convince others that you aren’t an entirely AI-contrived avatar. You will live your life cursed as being a generative AI.

Just wanted to give you a heads-up and sufficient warning.

You’ve been warned, proceed with caution.

Let’s put our heads together and figure out what to do if wanting to write like generative AI. I will ask that you play fair. An unfair method would be to have generative AI merely produce an essay for you. Thus, you didn’t lift a finger to write the essay. Cheater. Either go big or go home.

We are going to write from scratch an essay that would seem to be written by generative AI. The goal is that a person reading the essay will get their Spidey-sense tingling that the essay is written by AI. On top of this, the aim is that any of the detection tools would be fooled into scoring the essay as likely written by generative AI.

Here’s how we will proceed in terms of steps to undertake:

  • (1) Use well-known lines about being generative AI.
  • (2) Use words that are commonly used in generative AI essays.
  • (3) Use sentences that are worded as per generative AI essays.
  • (4) Tend toward being politically correct in the writing.
  • (5) Be verbose when the circumstances might not warrant doing so.
  • (6) Be terse when the circumstances might not warrant doing so.
  • (7) Do not use vernacular or curse words.
  • (8) Include happy and over-the-top or giddy comments.
  • (9) Do not be downtrodden or gloomy.
  • (10) Additional approaches

Let’s briefly try this.

First, I will share with you one of the most outrageous ways to accomplish this that in the right situation can be nearly surefire for fooling a human. It is done with immense ease.

Some of the generative AI apps such as ChatGPT tend to use this now classic line: “Please note that as an AI language model, I am …”. For example, you might enter a prompt into generative AI telling the AI to start crying, and the response often is something like this: “Please note that as an AI language model, I am unable to cry.”

You can write an essay by hand and include that line.

The person reading the essay is essentially clobbered over the head that the essay is written by generative AI. They would have to be entirely out to lunch to otherwise not assume that the essay was written by AI. Boom, drop the mic.

If you want to keep their suspicion somewhat low that they are maybe being tricked, make sure to include the line further into the essay rather than at the opening. Your rookie mistake would be to maybe have it be the first line and tip your hand too soon. This seems like a dead giveaway. On the other hand, you might have someone reading the essay that thinks they are a genius at noticing that the opening sentence tells that it is written by AI. Make them happy at their cleverness and good fortune at being smarter than an average bear.

You must gauge your audience accordingly.

Believe it or not, there have been research papers that used generative AI to either write the paper or rewrite the paper and opted to include the line about being an AI language model when they submitted the paper to journals for review. They weren’t trying to be tricky. They were caught with their hands in the cookie jar and asleep at the wheel. Worse still, sometimes these have managed to be published that way. A huge embarrassment to the journal, as you can imagine.

The key is that at this time the line about being an AI language model is assumed by the population at large as a sure sign that the essay was composed by AI. Until or if we ever see enough people using the same line as a joke or to fake out others, the line will remain a handy means of pulling the wool over the eyes of the unsuspecting.

There are numerous viable variations of the line in case you want to mix things up: "As an AI", "As an AI assistant", "As an AI developed by <AI maker>", whereby the AI maker could be OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and so on.

You cannot stop though with that one trick pony.

Few of the detection tools will fall hook, line, and sinker for one line. They are going to proceed to calculate the rest of the essay. Even if the one line is there, the rest of the essay might not meet the expectations of an AI-written piece of content.

You should study the words that are commonly used by generative AI and include those throughout your essay. I gave you some of the words above. Use them to your heart’s content.

Try to write the essay in a bland manner. Be straight ahead. The usual default for generative AI is that the AI makers have data trained and refined the algorithms to write conventional sentences. Remember that in this tomfoolery we are mimicking the day-to-day use of generative AI.

Seek to be polite and formal. This ought to include phrases such as “In conclusion”, “One should consider”, “It is important to note”, etc. Toss in a lot of those.

Transition words are popular in generative AI. Use for example these transitions throughout the essay: "Furthermore,”, "Moreover,", "However,", "In addition," and others that come to mind.

Beauties to sprinkle include: "I hope this helps!", "If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.", "You're welcome", "If you have any questions”, and similar phrases. It is okay that those might seem out of place in the essay. A human will assume that the generative AI was too dumb to realize that those wordings ought to not have been included in the middle of things.

An important consideration is that you are trying to put yourself into the mind of a human reader and aiming to fool them into thinking the essay is written by generative AI. Placing yourself into the shoes and the mind of another person is generally referred to as Theory of Mind (ToM), see my discussion at the link here .

So far, we are doing this solely by mimicking generative AI. The other angle is to bet on the basic assumptions people have about how generative AI essays are written. They might not be right in those assumptions, but we don’t care. Triggering their rash or unsupported assumptions is the key here. Adopt their way of thinking. Exploit ToM.

My favorites are these lines: "Based on my training data", "From what I've been trained on", "According to the data I have access to", and "My training includes information up to <date>". I like those lines because you aren’t being as obvious as if you said, “I am AI” and instead you are implying that you must be AI due to the notion of being data trained. Nice touch.

Whatever you do, avoid curse words like the plague. I am not saying that generative AI won’t ever use curse words. In fact, you can instruct generative AI to do so, and in some mild ways, the AI will make use of foul words, though the AI makers have done a lot of filtering to try and stop this from happening, see my coverage at the link here . The gist is that most people assume that generative AI would rather fall apart than employ curse words, so go ahead and play into that as a helpful ploy.

I believe this will get you started on the path toward writing essays that seem to be written by generative AI.

Congratulations, overall, you now know a lot about generative AI and the ongoing controversy of using generative AI as a ghostwriter.

A final comment for the time being.

You might be familiar with an adage about being the real McCoy. There is debate over how the catchphrase came into existence. One version is that Kid McCoy, a boxing champion, was in a bar and got challenged to a fight. Supposedly, as the story goes, he knocked the other person down with one blow. To which, the person on the floor remarked, that’s the real McCoy.

When you are assessing an essay, please be careful and mindful about declaring who or what is the real McCoy.

Accusing a human of using generative AI to write their content is currently a rather societally disagreeable offense and the person could end up being unduly tarnished. Consider the risks and costs of falsely accusing someone of such a transgression.

Keep in mind too that astute users of generative AI can easily get the AI to appear to be the real McCoy, in the sense of mimicking a human writing style. This means that there are bound to be essays that were written by generative AI but that can be extremely hard if not impossible to pin down as being written in that manner. The essay will seem to be handwritten and there aren’t enough telltale clues to faithfully state otherwise.

I’m not saying that so-called cheaters should go scot-free. I am saying that you need to be careful of abiding by one of those most important principles that we dearly hold sacred in our society and culture. Namely, innocent until proven guilty. Be cautious in making accusations, since an innocent person accused of something is still going to be tainted.

Try your darndest to first identify the real McCoy, before finger-pointing takes place.

Test Your Skills as a Games Moderator

Readers of The New York Times know our games — and more of them are getting to know our Games forums, too. We have followed along as you’ve flocked to the Wordle Review , Connections Companion , Wordplay and the Spelling Bee Forum to share personal stories, hints, puzzle strategies and the occasional complaint.

For new readers, making a comment may seem daunting, and regular contributors may be still be unsure of our moderation practices. With new people joining us in the forums every day, Assistant Community Engagement Manager Elie Levine joined forces with her Games co-moderator, Greg Mills, to welcome you to the Games community and show you the ropes of moderating the comments we receive.

That starts with familiarizing yourself with the comments. On any given day, we might see poems, hints and gripes about the puzzle. We do a lot of behind-the-scenes work to make sure the comments sections are enjoyable. To let you in on that process, we devised a quiz with comments we invented that will help you understand our moderation decisions.

It’s important that we keep our comments sections respectful, and we rely on you to set the tone. We need you to help us make the Games forums the lovely corners of the internet we know they can be. Take it from our sitewide Comments FAQ , which says: “Our standards for taste are reflected in the articles we publish in the newspaper and on NYTimes.com; we expect your comments to follow that example.”
