Hi-fi companies are a funny lot. As the Unico Secondo's maker demonstrates, they can produce a nice new amp... and forget to put it on their website, surely most people's first port of call for information these days.

Luckily, Unison Research's UK distributor is more alert, and from it we learn that this is the "second generation" of the Unico, a well-established valve/transistor hybrid design from Italy.

Not for the first time, we find ourselves wondering just how much 'valve character' one really gets from one double triode small-signal valve per channel, but, well, we've had good results from Unico models in the past...

It's a big amp and a well-filled case. The mains transformer actually looks quite small at first, but only because it's dwarfed by the case itself and the heat sink next to (and cunningly profiled around) it.

Moving across the case to the left, one finds a large rectifier and the usual reservoir capacitors, plus two pairs of MOSFET output devices per channel. Most of the audio amplification is done on a large board which carries the audio circuits (the valves and some ICs, a couple with their numbers intriguingly scratched off).

A daughterboard at the rear bears the selector switch, a mechanical type not accessible via the remote control, plus the input circuit for the single balanced input. The remaining five inputs are line-level unbalanced - one is upgradeable to phono operation.

Twin speaker terminals are fitted, plus phono outputs marked 'Monitor' (aka tape out) and 'Subwoofer' (pre out). We were particularly taken with the look of this model, with its extra-thick front panel - very aspirational!

It's a bit horses for courses, as ever, but this was clearly one of the hits of the day. One listener never quite found the levels of excitement he got elsewhere, for instance, but the others had little but good to say about it.

Most of all, they found in it the punch and immediacy thought lacking with some other contenders. Obviously, the Michael Jackson track benefited from this considerably, but it wasn't the only one to enjoy new-found life.

Some interesting direct comparisons were made with the RA combo (remember our panel were listening blind), the consensus being that this was probably the more neutral of the two contenders, but perhaps (as a consequence?) less upfront.

The Unico seemed to have more 'boogie factor' and perhaps slightly more impression of depth - and even, one listener suggested, height - in stereo images. It also seemed to have very impressive 'blackness' between notes, and some great dynamics too, not just in terms of swing from maximum to minimum, but also in the naturalness with which that was achieved.

Occasionally such qualities are achieved at the expense of analysis - not here. In fact, the Unico was superbly detailed, making clear the varied tones and directions of the instruments within the whole, but never separating them unnaturally.

If anything, sounds became more solid and real as they got more complex, with highly stable image placement and some very good depth too. And tonality? Well, given that not one listener mentioned the subject with any of the tracks, there can't be much wrong there!

Unison research unico secondo - £1,860.

unison research unico secondo

A large and imposing amp, this one is also pretty bare-bones, though unlike most it has the option of a phono stage. One of those was provided for review (the price given includes it, a very reasonable £125 on top of the basic model).

All kinds of amplifying devices are found inside the case, as the circuit uses bipolar transistors, FETs and valves. There’s very little use of surface-mount parts and most of the amplifying is done with discrete components, though there are a few op-amps dotted around and also some integrated circuits with part numbers intriguingly obliterated.

A substantial mains transformer is used and there is plenty of smoothing capacitance, plus quite extensive regulation of supply voltages for small-signal stages.

Uniquely in this group, input switching is done by a mechanical switch, mounted at the rear and operated by a long rod from the front panel – volume control also uses a regular mechanical potentiometer. The latter is motorised, but input selection is not remote controllable. That means you’ll have less cause to use the rather gorgeous remote, made of solid wood with a metal top plate – but also less cause to lament the ugly cheesehead screws which hold it together from the top. Please change to countersunk screws, at least!

Apart from the phono stage, input provision is basic and there are no modern frills like mini-jack sockets for portable players etc. There is a preamp output, which is also applicable to bi-amping and a record output marked ‘Monitor’. The phono stage handles MM and MC cartridges, though you have to get inside and fiddle with jumpers to change settings.

This turns out to be another amplifier that’s good at exciting, energetic music-making, though our listening panel did feel at times that it’s, perhaps, a bit too much of a good thing on the excitement front and could do with relaxing a bit. Specifically, it has a touch of brightness that affects voices, particularly the consonants and doesn’t always have quite a bass reach of the best in this group.

On the other hand, energetic rock and suchlike is great. Our Michael Jackson track went down well, helped by a big presentation and plenty of power and drive in the bass. The same qualities helped to some extent in our operatic excerpt, but in that case the excitement built at the start of one particularly long crescendo was rather undermined by the way the sound lost focus as more and more instruments and voices joined in.

Detail is better in less thickly textured music, but even in the unaccompanied choral track, which has only half a dozen or so voices, there was some lack of information about the acoustic of the recording venue, information that our listeners had heard through other amps. The voices themselves were very successful in this case, though, the rather more ambient recording making the Unico Secondo’s sibilance much less of an issue.

As the lone phono-compatible amp in this group it was hardly possible to make comparisons, but by the prevailing standards of decent integrated amps this one does a good job with LP sources, especially from moving magnet cartridges: moving coil is a little less clear. Bass is very clean and treble has a nice sense of cohesion to it.

WE SAY: A good phono stage adds value, but the sound could use a little more precision and less brightness. Good energy and lively, if not astoundingly extended, bass, while high treble has a pleasing sweetness too.

The Unico Secondo exemplifies the outstanding level of knowledge and experience that Italian hifi manufacturers Unison Research have to offer, specifically in designing and constructing audiophile grade hybrid amplifiers. It features some similarities with other Unison Research models, while additional and newly developed features and functions allow the unit to sit in its own league. One such improvement is the upgraded power supply circuits, with an additional secondary winding in the power supply transformer. This means that power dissipation is reduced, while the overall reliability of the amplifier is increased. The pre-amplification section, as well as the driver stages, are based on the technology designs used in the revered Unico SE and Unico 200 models, although they have been developed and enhanced further before being placed into the Unico Secondo. The Unico Secondo uses two high-quality ECC83 (12AX7) valves to bring the iconic Unison Research tube sound to the performance, resulting in a truly warm and musically engaging sonic experience. RCA inputs, as well as a balanced XLR input are catered for on the rear panel, as well as an MM/MC phono input meaning that both higher end source components and turntables are directly compatible with the Unico Secondo, without the need for an external phono stage. Ex Display... Made in Italy... Unison Research Secondo Phono Valve Hybrid Integrated Amplifier in Silver.

The Unico Secondo draws on many years of knowledge and experience gained by Unison Research's technical team in the field of audiophile hybrid amplifiers. This new amplifier draws on the success of previous models, but also carves its own niche with the implementation of new advancements.  The power supply circuits have been improved with the addition of a secondary winding in the power supply transformer, effectively reducing power dissipation and increasing the overall reliability of the Secondo. The pre-amplifier and driver stages are based on the designs used in the coveted Unico SE and Unico 200 models, though they've been further refined through in-depth analysis, extensive technical measuring and long listening sessions. The use of two high-quality ECC83 (12AX7) valves brings the iconic Unison Research tube sound to the performance. While the Unico Secondo has undergone a careful and thorough restyling compared to previous models, it has not lost the distinctive elements of the Unico Series. The front panel has a greater height when compared to the Unico Nuovo and Primo, and the case-work is made from brushed anodized aluminum cover, which gives the amplifier a contemporary and more aesthetically pleasing look. The Unico Secondo can easily be integrated into a wide range of premium quality hi-fi systems. Together with the usual Line (RCA) inputs, the Secondo also boasts a balanced XLR input for higher-end sources. All models sold in the UK also benefit from a built-in MM/MC phono stage for easily connecting a turntable. The Tape Output and low-impedance Subwoofer Output (which attenuates with the volume control) means you can also integrate a dedicated headphone amplifier and expand your listening experience with a 2.1 channel speaker system. The supplied RC2 remote control adds convenience when controlling from your listening position. The aluminium front panels on all Unico series products are clean and stylish thanks to a new sandblasting and anodizing process. The sandblasting consists of hammering the the aluminium plate with microscopic ceramic balls at room temperature to give the surface a homogeneous and opaque finish. The anodizing process facilitates the growth of a thin film of aluminium oxide on the surface, which enhances the mechanical resistance and hardness of the surface. The end-result is truly stunning to help round off this prestigious piece of equipment.

Unico due amplifier from unison research.

30th November 2018

unison research unico secondo

The Unico Due replaces the long-standing Unico Secondo in the line but brings new features to the range while also drawing inspiration from the Unico 90 design

The electronic circuitry of the Unico Due has been completely redesigned from the ground-up. By working to the same brief as previous Unico models, Unison Research have introduced changes in the circuitry, the power supply method, the pre-amp stage, the power amp stage and with the variety of settings and inputs.

Unico Due Amplifier From Unison Research

All based on 105μm tracks, the circuit board is fed by a power supply method that features a specially designed encapsulated transformer. The heart of the preamplifier stage is based around two ECC83 double triodes (one per channel). Configured as a gain stage followed by a cathode-follower, the circuit’s low output impedance drives the power stage.    The power amplifier stage itself features MOSFET transistors resulting in 100W per-channel output (8 Ohms).

One of the things I dearly love about our hobby? Its mysteries and profundities are such that it draws great minds from a whole host of other disciplines, military and civilian alike. Witness designers such as John Dunlavy, Paul Klipsch, John DeVore, Nelson Pass and more recently, Tranh Nguyen of Nuforce and Robert Grost of Cerious Technologies. These gents are not just standout audio designers, they are standout who have made the pilgrimage to audio because they feel strongly that they can build a better (sounding) mousetrap, all presumably in the service of music. It gives me pause just thinking about it. Imagine all the research and development by Jim Wang that went into the production of say, the Harmonic Tech Cyberlight interconnects; or Serguei Timachev's Stealth Indra just so you and I could get closer to the music. Look at nearly any of the truly classic audio products that have ever been. You can be certain there's an outstanding mind behind it.

It is for this reason that the notion of the in the interest of a particularly well-designed component such as any by the superb designers mentioned above has always rubbed me in the wrong direction, rhythmically. For much like the stockbroker who's supposedly wonderful at picking the right stocks but still needs to come in to work each day to feed his family, I have long felt that many of these improvers would not need to make a living improving upon other people's ideas if they truly were the brilliant component designers they think they are.

But then, the Unico SE Underwood HiFi Level 2 mod is no re-imagining of a stock Unico SE in an attempt to out-think its esteemed (and in my estimation brilliant) designer Professor Giovanni Sacchetti. Rather, this modification merely amounts to asking the hypothetical question: "What if there weren't any (well, too many) cost constraints during the parceling out of the parts on the designer's palette in the creation of a Unico SE?" This is an entirely reasonable question. It's one which is usually answered by taking a look at the next model or two up in any given line. Here another is answering it. No repainting the Sistine Chapel or colorizing a Charlie Chaplin film, just take what is a basically phenomenal piece of design and loosen the purse strings considerably in its outfitting. According to Walter Liederman, "we don't modify any component we don't like. You can't take something that's no good and make it really good. But you take a good product and extend the performance to world-class." That's exactly what the Underwood HiFi Level 2 Unico SE mod is all about.

Dollick all the cred necessary to confidently step up to the plate and mull over what might or might not constitute an improvement in the context of an already expert, award-winning design like the Unico SE.

Who a mod is important - that's why Walter Liederman picked wisely. I give you the example of the well-known parts dealer/DIY speaker source in New York where I grew up. In order to feed my addiction, I would occasionally stop by to ogle the latest DIY projects he had on display in all their completed glory. The proprietor is an ornery sort with a sharp tongue. He used it then mainly to chop away at retail speakers from pretty much every well-known high-end designer. He'd say things like "look at the cabinets on my speakers vs. theirs. Mine are 3 inches thick, are theirs?" Or, "look at the cheap $8 woofer fancy pants uses in his speakers. My woofers from Cabasse/Accuton cost $200 each."

And so they did. And they were beautiful to look at. But nearly every time I got to actually hear one of 'his' designs utilizing these mind-numbingly expensive drivers, there was something fundamentally amiss. Unfailingly the finished product was either too bright or the imaging was unfocused; or the bass was loose and chuffy or more commonly, some combination of all the above. Amazingly, with all the several-hundred-dollar drivers and 3" thick cabinetry, none of these designs were capable of making a sonically coherent statement.

I've owned the stock Unico for about two years, an eternity in audiophile years. I've come to feel strongly that this amp is about as good as you can do for below two grand. Punchy, fast and tonally a touch sweet, it's a killer of an integrated. That said, the Unico SE -- by many accounts including Sam Tellig's -- is an all-around step-up. And you want to mess with that kind of success? "Underwood HiFi's playing with fire" I thought. But was Walter burned? While the exterior simply says Unico, the interior, as per Walter's list, has benefited accordingly over the stock piece:

of the Underwood HiFi Level 1 Unico mod against the Level 2 mod penned by our own Paul Candy aka Candyman. You'll find some thoughtful musings as to the sonic gains from throwing some coin at the undoubtedly fine Parts conneXion Level 1 mod of the standard Unico and having it upgraded to the Level 2.

As compared with the stock Unico in standard guise, this modified (anointed?) beast is blessed with better bass; the broader, more defined soundstage that is the product of increased resolution; and -- most saliently improved to the point of startling -- dynamics and Naim-like pace and rhythm. The first word that came to mind after the requisite 200-or-so hour break-in was simply . By this term I mean it showed me in lurid detail exactly what every other component in my system sounded like in comparison to every thing else I had in-house. It did so in a patently obvious way though I never found the amp to be anything but sonically delightful despite this microscopy.

I changed speaker wires from the Ensemble Megaflux FSF to TG Audio's. Immediately, the sound was very obviously fuller in the low mids, with less detail, softer edges to instruments and voices and being a bit more laid back. I changed CD players from the Jupiter to the Lector. Immediately, string tone was more natural and the stage deeper. Simultaneously, singers and soloists were more present. I changed interconnects from my resident Argent Audio Pursang to some nameless el-cheapo and could tell exactly why and wherefore the Pursang walked all over it.

It's all about the extent to which a great amp with superb resolution lets you do this without ever sounding annoying or edgy. The next thing that jumped out at me was the dynamics. It was a Sunday and I had on the Deutsche Gramophone recording of Haydn's , with Fricsay conducting via the Lector. I was making eggs in the kitchen. Haydn's "Te Deum" comes on, a short choral piece as kind of a desert after the main course of the Mass. I am immediately pulled out of the kitchen onto my couch and hunker down in the listening seat praying the eggs will hang on for just a sec. This piece proceeds to dazzle and draw me in. I have to pay attention. The chorus swells, the music soars. This is no stock Unico! The textures and the flow, it's simply beautiful. The eggs got a bit singed.

was superb in this regard, as was the new girlfriend-requested U2/Beck fest consisting of the back-to-back playing of and . With all of these CDs, bass was slammin' as the kids say, voices were at times in-the-room present and dynamics, to be sure, were ridiculous. Ridiculous to the point where on several CDs, I actually had to lower the volume with the handy-dandy (but now plastic and no longer nice wooden) remote in order to keep my neighbors happy and me from being that guy in the Maxell audio tape ad.

Soprano voices like Renee Fleming's singing "Porgi Amor" swelled with new-found -- and winceless -- ease as the climax of a piece came. Warhorse symphonies like Dvorak's started off low and slow and then just pounded the hell out of the little Totem Arros when Telarc conductor Joel Levi asked for all the Atlanta symphony had to give.

Getting to review the modded Unico SE had made me a bit nervous. Since it was a Unico, I knew it'd be good. Since it was a Unico , I knew it would probably be better than my standard non-SE unit. And since it was an Underwood HiFi Level 2 Unico SE, I expected hell for my sanity. The worst thing that can happen to a reviewer is to be reviewing a superb piece and starting to feel you can't live without it while simultaneously knowing that even if you sold your listening couch, you'd never be able to afford it!

Were my fears well founded? Yes and no. The new Rene Jacobs conducted recording of Haydn's on Harmonia Mundi is a magnificent example of what this hobby is about in every way. The music is simply uplifting and the recording sublime. Yes, there is a lot of vocalizing about "lush greenery" and "melting snows" and all the usual dramatization of the natural realm endemic to libretti of the day, though with these singers and this degree of tuneful inventiveness, this piece could be about the yellow pages or the tax code and I'd listen.

of the Unison Research gear I've heard. It was as on as ever with just a pinch of sugar. Hooking up the modded SE, your foot starts to tap a bit more to the jaunty "Schon eilet froh der Ackersmann" that Simon, played by baritone Dietrich Henschel, sings so lyrically. Likewise, track 9 is a beautiful part for full chorus praising the Lord, source of all the beauty of the seasons and each one's particular bounty. With the SE, the bass drum that underpins the choral entry was fuller and more of the mechanics behind the production of the sound -- the striking of damped wooden sticks on taut drum skin -- could be heard. And the stage was spread a bit wider. Happenings within that stage too were more clearly localizable.

But the stock Unico gave up relatively little in terms of allowing me to enjoy the piece as a whole. It didn't punch as hard and wasn't quite as toe-tapping but the fact that I can even draw close comparison with so upgraded a beast as the Level 2 SE speaks volumes for the solidity of the Unico's fundamental design. It could also have something to do with the fact that the Unico SE, by virtue of its larger power output, incorporates 4 Mosfets per side as opposed to the stocker's 2. You might make an argument that the stocker's somewhat simpler path to the speaker keeps it in the running in terms of its ability to portray, if not sheer scale and dynamic punch, at least intimacy and inflection.

As evidenced by its performance on my next two selections, it does nearly as well if not well as big brother. On smaller scale fare including Ian Bostridge's new "Die Schöne Müllerin" recording with accompanist Mitsuko Uchida on EMI and the Cowboy Junkies new CD on Latent Recordings, the stock Unico showed itself to be at times nearly the equal of the modded unit in its ability to present these works with immediacy and fluidity.

Yes, there was more separation and space between Uchida and Bostridge through the Level 2 SE and just plain more venue around them - but not vastly so. The same went for a clearer delineation of Uchida's runs and left-handed subtleties. So too with the Cowboy Junkies on "Brothers Under the Bridge". A banjo picked throughout the song could be more clearly heard through the mix when listening through the Level 2. And as mentioned before, the bass that underpins so many of the tracks on this CD was certainly more fulsome. But fortunately for both me and my thin wallet, the stocker made enough of the musical information that mattered on all three CDs come through to convey the overarching musical message loud and clear.

If I were reading rather than writing this review, here's the two questions that would be foremost in my mind: "How depressed were you to have to send the Level 2 back?" and "Will your life ever be the same again now that you can only listen to the stock-standard poor man's Unico?"

As good as I think the Level 2 SE is -- and it is a superb amplifier in every way -- I can get by. This is not so much a statement about the Level 2's quality as it is an affirmation of the solidity and right-mindedness of the original design. If I had a larger room, less efficient speakers or listened mostly to more bombastic fare, then I'd likely be showing more signs of withdrawal. As it stands, there's only a mild tremor and a bit of excessive sweatiness.

Speaking as a card-carrying Unico owner, to those of you with a Unico SE, let me say you've made a superb choice. As it stands, the Underwood HiFi Unico SE Level 2 is among the two or three best amplifiers I've ever heard. It certainly ranks as the best amplifier I've ever heard. And I've heard plenty of those. Heartily and enviously recommended!

Unison Research Unico 150 review

This powerhouse of an amp delivers a huge amount of fun too... tested at £4000.

unison research unico secondo

What Hi-Fi? Verdict

The Unico 150 is something of a powerhouse. It delivers an immensely muscular sound mixed in with a large dose of fun

Muscular, energetic presentation

Strong dynamics

Fluid midrange

Lacks a little precision and insight

Some small build issues

Why you can trust What Hi-Fi? Our expert team reviews products in dedicated test rooms, to help you make the best choice for your budget. Find out more about how we test.

Unison Research’s flagship Unico amplifier is something of a beast, albeit one dressed in a crisp smart suit. The numbers reveal a lot about this hybrid integrated – £4000, 25kg and 150W per channel.

But even these take a back seat to the way it looks on our test rack. The Unico dwarfs most of our reference kit thanks to its generously stocky proportions.

That nicely finished casework measures a substantial 18 x 44 x 44 cm (hwd), so make sure you have plenty of space to house it. While the Unico doesn’t run particularly hot it’s still good to leave a decent amount of space around to help with ventilation.

Build quality is mostly good. The three-piece front panel is crisply machined and the rest of the casework feels immensely solid. Neat details such as the classy-looking RCA socket used and Unison Research branded speakers connections lift the 150 above the norm.

There’s a choice of finishes – the silver of our test sample, or black. The latter will cost you £100 more.

There are some areas where there is room for improvement. The two large control dials fit nicely in the hand, but the input selector feels a little wobbly. That three-piece front panel looks distinctive, but one of the trio of panels wasn’t aligned exactly. It was only a touch out, but at this price, Unison Research, we’d like perfection please.

unison research unico secondo

Take a look inside the metalwork and you’ll find a dual-mono hybrid circuit, which mixes valves in the input and driver stages with MOSFETs on the output stage. It’s a clear attempt to blend the fluidity and finesse of valves with plenty of muscle and grip.

Many manufacturers have tried to combine these vastly different technologies and judging by the mixed results it isn’t easy to get right. Unison Research is one of the few to do so on a consistent basis.

unison research unico secondo

That Class A/B MOSFET output stage is capable of plenty of power. It has a claimed output of 150W per channel into 8 ohms that rises to a mighty 220W as impedance halves.

That’s plenty of grunt and certainly enough to deliver high volume levels from most price compatible speakers.

The Unico’s connectivity is good enough for the types of systems it’ll typically be bought for. There are a decent number of line level inputs including a pair of balanced XLRs plus a direct connection that bypasses the volume control – for use in a multichannel set-up where the volume level will be controlled by an external AV processor.

There are two pairs of speaker connections to help make biwiring easier.

The distinctive remote got a mixed reaction from our test team. For the most part, we warmed to the oddly-shaped wooden casing, but the multitude of identikit small circular buttons didn’t fare as well.

It’s a system remote, which means the vast majority are no use for the amp, plus their slightly sharp edges didn’t meet with universal approval.

unison research unico secondo

Once up and running, the Unico proves an impressive unit. We connect it into our reference system using Naim’s NDS/555PS music streamer as the main source with our long serving ATC SCM50 speakers completing the set-up.

In this system the 150 comes across as something of a powerhouse – no surprise considering its generous output.

Considering the amplifier’s muscularity, large-scale classical works seem a good place to start listening. We run through Tchaikovsky’s Marché Slave Op.31 and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring , taking in a large dose of Dvorak in the middle. The Unison Research is a smooth performer with a lively and articulate nature, though that isn’t what grabs our attention.

We are initially drawn to the presentation’s scale and authority. It sounds huge, with plenty of headroom and the ability to play at furniture rattling levels without any obvious signs of stress.

There’s little sign of hardness as volume level head northwards, just a wall of sound that extends to completely fill one end of our listening room.

MORE: Best stereo amplifiers 2016

unison research unico secondo

Tonally, there’s a decent balance, though the top end lacks a bit of the body and richness that makes the bass frequencies so attractive. The Unico’s sound staging is nice and wide, but lacks a little depth compared to the best we’ve heard at the price.

We move onto Nick Cave’s Push the Sky Away and love the way the Unison renders voices. There’s delicacy here and the kind of fluidity that brings to mind some of the company’s all-valve designs. It makes a decent job of rhythms too, allowing the song’s gentle momentum to build with grace.

We know there’s more detail on this track than the Unico delivers and a greater separation of instruments too, but there’s enough this amplifier does right that such shortcomings don’t concern us.

That’s particularly the case when switching to Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore & Lewis where the Unison Research responsive nature makes listening to the song a treat. The amplifier’s energetic delivery works brilliantly. There’s so much drive, it’s exciting, impressively articulate and a whole lot of fun.

Fun is a thing many high-end products overlook in the quest for ever more insight and refinement – we’re glad Unison Research hasn’t gone down that road.

The Unico 150 isn’t flawless, but it is immensely likeable. For some the size may be an issue, other may want a more transparent and precise performer, but we’re charmed by its big-hearted presentation.

  • Distribution

Unico 90 is a class AB hybrid integrated amplifier with zero feedback, as the most precious valve amplifiers uses only two stages. The heart of the Unico 90 circuit is found in its hybrid structure. All of the gain, and subsequently the “character” of the amp, is determined by the only tube stage made with ECC83 and ECC 81in particular multiple-parallel-totem-pole.
