Unison Research Secondo Integrated Amplifiers

Outstanding integrated amp. Conseravatively rated at 100 wpc. Great build and aesthetics. Full, rich sound (tube preamp) without a touch of shrill notes. I thought it was cleaner sound than Rotel and NAD products at this level. Italian made and the beauty (including a solid wood remote) show the outstanding build quality. See http://www.tech.co.uk/home-entertainment/hi-fi-and-audio/hi-fi-amps-and-receivers/review/unison-unico-secondo for a fuller review.

I have owned several good integrated amps I bought this based on reviews. The worst by far compared to any I have used in this price range.Very poor dynamics and really flat sounding.Very disappointed I bought an Audio analogue Maestro at a good price which kills this amp.If you are on a budget consider the Plinius 8200 vastly better.

Noisy lifeless and overpriced.Good build quality

After rolling tubes through it and settling on Telefunken 12ax7s, The soundstage on this monster widened and deepened. The balanced inputs are HUGE to the sound and the imporved transformer offers a more powerful and quieter alternative to the Unico (which I owned previously) and Uniso SE offerings. The wood remote is classy and just feels good in your hand. Con: they could have made a cage on the top for rolling tubes so that you wouldn't have to take the whole top of the cabinet off. Pros amazing air and detail. Excels at Vocals, but drove my speakers so well I often was asked where the sub was located . . .

Unison Unico Secondo review

This italian beauty is a real hidden gem.

TechRadar Verdict

Unison may not be shouting about it, but this amp is very good at retrieval of details and also at placing them in their appropriate context

Very good detail and coherence

Precise and deep imaging

Hi-fi companies are a funny lot. As the Unico Secondo's maker demonstrates, they can produce a nice new amp... and forget to put it on their website, surely most people's first port of call for information these days.

Luckily, Unison Research's UK distributor is more alert, and from it we learn that this is the "second generation" of the Unico, a well-established valve/transistor hybrid design from Italy.

Not for the first time, we find ourselves wondering just how much 'valve character' one really gets from one double triode small-signal valve per channel, but, well, we've had good results from Unico models in the past...

It's a big amp and a well-filled case. The mains transformer actually looks quite small at first, but only because it's dwarfed by the case itself and the heat sink next to (and cunningly profiled around) it.

Moving across the case to the left, one finds a large rectifier and the usual reservoir capacitors, plus two pairs of MOSFET output devices per channel. Most of the audio amplification is done on a large board which carries the audio circuits (the valves and some ICs, a couple with their numbers intriguingly scratched off).

A daughterboard at the rear bears the selector switch, a mechanical type not accessible via the remote control, plus the input circuit for the single balanced input. The remaining five inputs are line-level unbalanced - one is upgradeable to phono operation.

Twin speaker terminals are fitted, plus phono outputs marked 'Monitor' (aka tape out) and 'Subwoofer' (pre out). We were particularly taken with the look of this model, with its extra-thick front panel - very aspirational!

It's a bit horses for courses, as ever, but this was clearly one of the hits of the day. One listener never quite found the levels of excitement he got elsewhere, for instance, but the others had little but good to say about it.

Most of all, they found in it the punch and immediacy thought lacking with some other contenders. Obviously, the Michael Jackson track benefited from this considerably, but it wasn't the only one to enjoy new-found life.

Some interesting direct comparisons were made with the RA combo (remember our panel were listening blind), the consensus being that this was probably the more neutral of the two contenders, but perhaps (as a consequence?) less upfront.

The Unico seemed to have more 'boogie factor' and perhaps slightly more impression of depth - and even, one listener suggested, height - in stereo images. It also seemed to have very impressive 'blackness' between notes, and some great dynamics too, not just in terms of swing from maximum to minimum, but also in the naturalness with which that was achieved.

Occasionally such qualities are achieved at the expense of analysis - not here. In fact, the Unico was superbly detailed, making clear the varied tones and directions of the instruments within the whole, but never separating them unnaturally.

If anything, sounds became more solid and real as they got more complex, with highly stable image placement and some very good depth too. And tonality? Well, given that not one listener mentioned the subject with any of the tracks, there can't be much wrong there!

Integrated Amplifiers

Unison research unico secondo - £1,860.

unison research unico secondo

A large and imposing amp, this one is also pretty bare-bones, though unlike most it has the option of a phono stage. One of those was provided for review (the price given includes it, a very reasonable £125 on top of the basic model).

All kinds of amplifying devices are found inside the case, as the circuit uses bipolar transistors, FETs and valves. There’s very little use of surface-mount parts and most of the amplifying is done with discrete components, though there are a few op-amps dotted around and also some integrated circuits with part numbers intriguingly obliterated.

A substantial mains transformer is used and there is plenty of smoothing capacitance, plus quite extensive regulation of supply voltages for small-signal stages.

Uniquely in this group, input switching is done by a mechanical switch, mounted at the rear and operated by a long rod from the front panel – volume control also uses a regular mechanical potentiometer. The latter is motorised, but input selection is not remote controllable. That means you’ll have less cause to use the rather gorgeous remote, made of solid wood with a metal top plate – but also less cause to lament the ugly cheesehead screws which hold it together from the top. Please change to countersunk screws, at least!

Apart from the phono stage, input provision is basic and there are no modern frills like mini-jack sockets for portable players etc. There is a preamp output, which is also applicable to bi-amping and a record output marked ‘Monitor’. The phono stage handles MM and MC cartridges, though you have to get inside and fiddle with jumpers to change settings.

This turns out to be another amplifier that’s good at exciting, energetic music-making, though our listening panel did feel at times that it’s, perhaps, a bit too much of a good thing on the excitement front and could do with relaxing a bit. Specifically, it has a touch of brightness that affects voices, particularly the consonants and doesn’t always have quite a bass reach of the best in this group.

On the other hand, energetic rock and suchlike is great. Our Michael Jackson track went down well, helped by a big presentation and plenty of power and drive in the bass. The same qualities helped to some extent in our operatic excerpt, but in that case the excitement built at the start of one particularly long crescendo was rather undermined by the way the sound lost focus as more and more instruments and voices joined in.

Detail is better in less thickly textured music, but even in the unaccompanied choral track, which has only half a dozen or so voices, there was some lack of information about the acoustic of the recording venue, information that our listeners had heard through other amps. The voices themselves were very successful in this case, though, the rather more ambient recording making the Unico Secondo’s sibilance much less of an issue.

As the lone phono-compatible amp in this group it was hardly possible to make comparisons, but by the prevailing standards of decent integrated amps this one does a good job with LP sources, especially from moving magnet cartridges: moving coil is a little less clear. Bass is very clean and treble has a nice sense of cohesion to it.

WE SAY: A good phono stage adds value, but the sound could use a little more precision and less brightness. Good energy and lively, if not astoundingly extended, bass, while high treble has a pleasing sweetness too.

Unico due amplifier from unison research.

30th November 2018

unison research unico secondo

The Unico Due replaces the long-standing Unico Secondo in the line but brings new features to the range while also drawing inspiration from the Unico 90 design

The electronic circuitry of the Unico Due has been completely redesigned from the ground-up. By working to the same brief as previous Unico models, Unison Research have introduced changes in the circuitry, the power supply method, the pre-amp stage, the power amp stage and with the variety of settings and inputs.

Unico Due Amplifier From Unison Research

All based on 105μm tracks, the circuit board is fed by a power supply method that features a specially designed encapsulated transformer. The heart of the preamplifier stage is based around two ECC83 double triodes (one per channel). Configured as a gain stage followed by a cathode-follower, the circuit’s low output impedance drives the power stage.    The power amplifier stage itself features MOSFET transistors resulting in 100W per-channel output (8 Ohms).

Unico Due Amplifier From Unison Research

Including a built-in USB DAC and phono stage, the USB input features an ESS Sabre DAC ES9018K2M with jitter eliminator circuit, offering support for audio files up-to 32bit/384kHz PCM and DSD256. The integrated phono stage module is pre-set to accept Moving Magnet cartridges but can be modified by a service engineer to cater for Moving Coil devices. Additionally, the Unico Due has settings for AV passthrough, subwoofer output, DAC output, a Tape loop and to adjust channel balance. Price is £2,500.

Ex Display Unison Research Unico Secondo Phono, Valve Hybrid Integrated Amplifier

Ex Display... Made in Italy... Unison Research Secondo Phono Valve Hybrid Integrated Amplifier in Silver.

The Unico Secondo draws on many years of knowledge and experience gained by Unison Research's technical team in the field of audiophile hybrid amplifiers. This new amplifier draws on the success of previous models, but also carves its own niche with the implementation of new advancements.  The power supply circuits have been improved with the addition of a secondary winding in the power supply transformer, effectively reducing power dissipation and increasing the overall reliability of the Secondo. The pre-amplifier and driver stages are based on the designs used in the coveted Unico SE and Unico 200 models, though they've been further refined through in-depth analysis, extensive technical measuring and long listening sessions. The use of two high-quality ECC83 (12AX7) valves brings the iconic Unison Research tube sound to the performance. While the Unico Secondo has undergone a careful and thorough restyling compared to previous models, it has not lost the distinctive elements of the Unico Series. The front panel has a greater height when compared to the Unico Nuovo and Primo, and the case-work is made from brushed anodized aluminum cover, which gives the amplifier a contemporary and more aesthetically pleasing look. The Unico Secondo can easily be integrated into a wide range of premium quality hi-fi systems. Together with the usual Line (RCA) inputs, the Secondo also boasts a balanced XLR input for higher-end sources. All models sold in the UK also benefit from a built-in MM/MC phono stage for easily connecting a turntable. The Tape Output and low-impedance Subwoofer Output (which attenuates with the volume control) means you can also integrate a dedicated headphone amplifier and expand your listening experience with a 2.1 channel speaker system. The supplied RC2 remote control adds convenience when controlling from your listening position. The aluminium front panels on all Unico series products are clean and stylish thanks to a new sandblasting and anodizing process. The sandblasting consists of hammering the the aluminium plate with microscopic ceramic balls at room temperature to give the surface a homogeneous and opaque finish. The anodizing process facilitates the growth of a thin film of aluminium oxide on the surface, which enhances the mechanical resistance and hardness of the surface. The end-result is truly stunning to help round off this prestigious piece of equipment.

Unico Nuovo

Unizon lisa-chi.

Signore Giovanni "Diavolo" Sacchetti do it? No corner cutting on the insides either. Instead, techno-geek poetry and artful rather than terminal execution.

[Photo of pre-production unit. The final appearance of the Unico CD's front baffle will likely be a bit different and the nomenclature silk screen may change size and placement.]

keys, but the review will take you on a passenger-seat joy ride nonetheless.

But first, final operational notes before I fire 'er up. With the aft power switch flicked, the unit undergoes a 20-sec thermal stabilization phase during which both small green LEDs up front flash furiously and the volume control should be set to mute/zero. When the lights go solid, the sonic curtain rises - unless the LEDs should flash again. That would indicate thermal protection and result in intermittent auto shotdown until the condition has passed or been remedied. Unwitting mains interruption or brief power failure will automatically trigger the start-up cycle once AC flows again. The Unico is further fitted with a loudspeaker short protection circuit whose internal jumpers JP16/17 can be removed for bypass if desired.

The optional phono board replaces the standard AUX input and offers gain provisions for both MM (50-60dB) and MC (40-50dB) via clearly marked jumpers. +/- 10dB gain fine-tuning is possible by changing links JP102/10 on the board. MC input impedance is 100Ohm @ 440pF, the equivalent MM values are 47kOhm @ 220pf. RIAA equalization is compound passive/active, tolerance said to be within +/- 0.1dB.

Description

Used but near-perfect condition Unison Research Unico Secondo Hybrid Integrated amp. This amp was converted to US voltage by Unison Research but otherwise perfect in every way other than the tiny nick in the coating on the top edge as shown and a very minor paint nick on the rear of the chassis. This thing is a beast of Italian sexiness and you won't be disappointed!!! One note - this unit DOES NOT have the optional Phono board installed. The phono input is line level. You will need to use a phono preamp with this amplifier. Sorry, not interested in trades. Will ship in original box with all accessories. Buyer pays actual shipping plus PayPal fees. Local pick up is cash only. Thanks for looking!

Unison Research Unico 150 review

This powerhouse of an amp delivers a huge amount of fun too... tested at £4000.

unison research unico secondo

What Hi-Fi? Verdict

The Unico 150 is something of a powerhouse. It delivers an immensely muscular sound mixed in with a large dose of fun

Muscular, energetic presentation

Strong dynamics

Fluid midrange

Lacks a little precision and insight

Some small build issues

Why you can trust What Hi-Fi? Our expert team reviews products in dedicated test rooms, to help you make the best choice for your budget. Find out more about how we test.

Unison Research’s flagship Unico amplifier is something of a beast, albeit one dressed in a crisp smart suit. The numbers reveal a lot about this hybrid integrated – £4000, 25kg and 150W per channel.

But even these take a back seat to the way it looks on our test rack. The Unico dwarfs most of our reference kit thanks to its generously stocky proportions.

That nicely finished casework measures a substantial 18 x 44 x 44 cm (hwd), so make sure you have plenty of space to house it. While the Unico doesn’t run particularly hot it’s still good to leave a decent amount of space around to help with ventilation.

MORE: Awards 2015 - best stereo amplifiers

unison research unico secondo

Build quality is mostly good. The three-piece front panel is crisply machined and the rest of the casework feels immensely solid. Neat details such as the classy-looking RCA socket used and Unison Research branded speakers connections lift the 150 above the norm.

There’s a choice of finishes – the silver of our test sample, or black. The latter will cost you £100 more.

There are some areas where there is room for improvement. The two large control dials fit nicely in the hand, but the input selector feels a little wobbly. That three-piece front panel looks distinctive, but one of the trio of panels wasn’t aligned exactly. It was only a touch out, but at this price, Unison Research, we’d like perfection please.

unison research unico secondo

Take a look inside the metalwork and you’ll find a dual-mono hybrid circuit, which mixes valves in the input and driver stages with MOSFETs on the output stage. It’s a clear attempt to blend the fluidity and finesse of valves with plenty of muscle and grip.

Many manufacturers have tried to combine these vastly different technologies and judging by the mixed results it isn’t easy to get right. Unison Research is one of the few to do so on a consistent basis.

unison research unico secondo

That Class A/B MOSFET output stage is capable of plenty of power. It has a claimed output of 150W per channel into 8 ohms that rises to a mighty 220W as impedance halves.

That’s plenty of grunt and certainly enough to deliver high volume levels from most price compatible speakers.

The Unico’s connectivity is good enough for the types of systems it’ll typically be bought for. There are a decent number of line level inputs including a pair of balanced XLRs plus a direct connection that bypasses the volume control – for use in a multichannel set-up where the volume level will be controlled by an external AV processor.

There are two pairs of speaker connections to help make biwiring easier.

The distinctive remote got a mixed reaction from our test team. For the most part, we warmed to the oddly-shaped wooden casing, but the multitude of identikit small circular buttons didn’t fare as well.

It’s a system remote, which means the vast majority are no use for the amp, plus their slightly sharp edges didn’t meet with universal approval.

unison research unico secondo

Once up and running, the Unico proves an impressive unit. We connect it into our reference system using Naim’s NDS/555PS music streamer as the main source with our long serving ATC SCM50 speakers completing the set-up.

In this system the 150 comes across as something of a powerhouse – no surprise considering its generous output.

Considering the amplifier’s muscularity, large-scale classical works seem a good place to start listening. We run through Tchaikovsky’s Marché Slave Op.31 and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring , taking in a large dose of Dvorak in the middle. The Unison Research is a smooth performer with a lively and articulate nature, though that isn’t what grabs our attention.

We are initially drawn to the presentation’s scale and authority. It sounds huge, with plenty of headroom and the ability to play at furniture rattling levels without any obvious signs of stress.

There’s little sign of hardness as volume level head northwards, just a wall of sound that extends to completely fill one end of our listening room.

MORE: Best stereo amplifiers 2016

unison research unico secondo

Tonally, there’s a decent balance, though the top end lacks a bit of the body and richness that makes the bass frequencies so attractive. The Unico’s sound staging is nice and wide, but lacks a little depth compared to the best we’ve heard at the price.

We move onto Nick Cave’s Push the Sky Away and love the way the Unison renders voices. There’s delicacy here and the kind of fluidity that brings to mind some of the company’s all-valve designs. It makes a decent job of rhythms too, allowing the song’s gentle momentum to build with grace.

We know there’s more detail on this track than the Unico delivers and a greater separation of instruments too, but there’s enough this amplifier does right that such shortcomings don’t concern us.

That’s particularly the case when switching to Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore & Lewis where the Unison Research responsive nature makes listening to the song a treat. The amplifier’s energetic delivery works brilliantly. There’s so much drive, it’s exciting, impressively articulate and a whole lot of fun.

Fun is a thing many high-end products overlook in the quest for ever more insight and refinement – we’re glad Unison Research hasn’t gone down that road.

The Unico 150 isn’t flawless, but it is immensely likeable. For some the size may be an issue, other may want a more transparent and precise performer, but we’re charmed by its big-hearted presentation.

History of Chelyabinsk Oblast

People began to settle in the Southern Urals in the Paleolithic era. Bogdanovka site on the Ural River (Kizilsky district) is the most ancient archaeological site found on the territory of the region (about 70 thousand years). The age of Paleolithic layers in Ignatievka cave (Katav-Ivanovsky district), famous for its wall paintings, is about 15 thousand years. There are numerous archaeological sites of the Stone Age, settlements of the Bronze and Iron Ages.

In the 13th century, the territory of the Southern Urals was part of the Mongol Empire. Kesene mausoleum, preserved to our days near Varna village, is an outstanding monument of the late Horde time. The first Russian settlements in what is now the Chelyabinsk region appeared in the late 17th century.

Administratively the formation of the region began in the 18th century. It was the result of Peter’s I policy aimed at developing producing forces of the country and the expansion of its borders. This was reflected in the activities of the Orenburg expedition. For military and commercial purposes the expedition founded a number of fortresses, one of them was the fortress of Chelyabinsk (1736).

More Historical Facts…

In 1737, Isetskaya province was founded that included the northern part of the present Chelyabinsk region and the Kurgan region. In 1743, Chelyabinsk became the center of the province. In 1744, Orenburg gubernia was formed, it included Isetskaya and Ufimskaya provinces.

In the second half of the 18th century, mining and metallurgical areas of the Southern Urals began to grow rapidly. Several large mining plants were built, which became the basis for future towns. The first towns were Chelyabinsk, Verhneuralsk (1781) and Troitsk (1784).

In the early 19th century, most of the territory of the region was part of the Orenburg gubernia. Since the mid-19th century, Orenburg Cossacks started the rapid development of the steppe areas. New settlements were named in honor of the battles and victories of the Russian army: Varna, Fershampenuaz, Borodino, Paris and others.

After the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway (1891-1916), the province became the largest transportation hub connecting central Russia, the Urals and Siberia.

In 1919, Chelyabinsk gubernia was formed. November, 3, 1923, Ural Oblast with the capital in Yekaterinburg was formed. January 17, 1934, Ural Oblast was enlarged and was named Chelyabinsk Oblast. Later on, the territory of the region was diminished not once. In 1943, 32 districts were transferred to the newly formed Kurgan Oblast. After that, the borders of Chelyabinsk Oblast remained almost unchanged.

During the Second World War, this region played an important role producing metals, ammunition and military equipment. After the war, Chelyabinsk became the supplier of equipment and human resources for the restoration of Stalingrad, Donbass and other areas of the USSR.

In the 1950s, part of the territory of the region was subjected to radioactive contamination as a result of the accident at the plant for processing waste “Mayak”.

The collapse of the USSR had a negative impact on the economic situation in the region. From 1990 to 2000, rail transportation halved. In 1995, the decline in production in all sectors was 52%, in agriculture - 44%.

February 15, 2013 a relatively large meteorite flew over the territory of the oblast. It became known as the Chelyabinsk meteorite (diameter - about 17 meters, weight - about 10 thousand tons). The meteorite exploded in the vicinity of Chelyabinsk, at an altitude of 15-25 km. Several fragments of it fell in the area of Lake Chebarkul.
