Action! - Female 4 Front: Spheeris Rock N' World

Yeah, this more on my speed.

Penelope Spheeris abandons her cautionary tales and descends into the depths of the 1980s sleazy cop dramas that seem to dominate most of the indie cinema circuit. In this case, we have none other than Princess Leia, who lands on Earth and serves as a member of the vice department on the streets of Hollywood. A very young Robin Wright also makes an early appearance.

Like any picture in this genre, most of the entertainment comes from the banter and acting, particularly how everyone seems to be hammering things up. And in that regard, the film delivers from beginning to end. Evan C. Kim, the…

Recently bought the poster and realized that I need to finally see this. So I did. Needs a proper restoration although this is definitely one of my least fave Spheeris films. Lacks the edge of her previous three. Evan C. Kim (Loo from Fistful of Yen) has a big role. Too bad he's no longer working in the industry. Frank Gorshin is the highlight. Oh... and it's Robin Wright's first film.

Bit of a face-plant for Penelope Spheeris and the co-writer of Gary Sherman’s earlier, superior,  VICE SQUAD . A collection of meandering vignettes that waits too long to coalesce into a single plot for my liking. Not a write-off, but far from the best of its ilk.

I guess the idea was to pull from real reports a la The Naked City, but sleazier. I’m pretty sure Sherman’s SQUAD incorporated similar anecdotal research, only that film is far more focused — and it has Wings Hauser! This one has sole writing credit by Kenneth Peters, and maybe he needed reigning in like with Sherman’s flick. It seems like he’s treating the assignment like a pilot episode. Unfortunately, since we’re never returning to…

A mother searching for her runaway daughter (robin wright of princess bride fame) only to find out she's now involved in the sleazy world of sex, drugs, and porn. Carrie Fisher (fresh out of rehab) is a rookie cop who goes undercover as a prostitute to try and find the daughter and bring down her evil pimp! Can she earn the respect of her veteran partners?

This was a pretty fun watch even if a tad uneven at times when switching between drama and an all-out comedy with the antics of Kim and Joey Travolta. Which go from one extreme to the other with Kim's endless amounts of disguises and doing his best Jackie Chan by leaping onto moving vehicles.…

After watching Vice Squad I decided to catch up with the poor man's version of it directed by Penelope Spheeris. It kinda plays out like a Joseph Wambaugh novel with a pretty good soundtrack, having three separate threads bookended by a couple of comical busts.

Bookends: both feature vice cops Chang and Stevens (Evan Kim & Joey Travolta), trying to bust hookers, on both occasions Chang is in head shakingly cringeworthy disguises and just made to look a buffoon. The first bookend is completely non-PC, making it the funnier of the two...the last one is chronic.

Thread 1: Captain Jensen (Ronny Cox) meets with a worried and desperate mom (Trish Van Devere), who is trying to track down her young runaway…

Penelope Spheeris (The Decline of Western Civilization, Suburbia) helms this kitchen sink sex comedy/crime drama that somehow fumbles a potential Carrie Fisher sexy nightie variant chase or shootout scene and Frank "The Riddler" Gorshin at his creepiest as a powder-pushing psycho pimp wrecking the joint like fan favorite Wings Hauser once did in 1982's Vice Squad, a better movie. John's brother Joey Travolta who you'll remember as John Travolta's brother, and Evan Kim (Kentucky Fried Movie) also play vice cops. Robin Wright (The Princess Bride, State of Grace) plays a tarhead runaway/streetwalker being tracked down by her concerned mother (Trish Van Devere) and Hard Boiled Haggerty (The Battlecreek Brawl) beats the brakes off of several cats, as per usual. The tone of this is all over the place. Buddy cop movie? Hardcore with George C. Scott? Regardless, it's got a wild cast which maybe makes it worth it.

For all you 90210 heads out there, this made me laugh and might hit for you as well:

"This Jim Walsh you were telling me about runs an outfit called... pretty girl. Your daughter's a prostitute. And on heroin."

Jim Walsh here is Frank Gorshin (!) and not James Eckhouse but just imagine. It'd make so much sense. The house. All that money for Brandon and Brenda.

I went into Hollywood Vice Squad completely blind and with low expectations as a late-night spur-of-the-moment selection. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this fast-paced romp based on the cases of a band of vice cops on the seedy streets of La La Land. The film was promoted as an action/comedy and as a result the tone is a bit all over the place, with comedic elements and characters thrown into the midst of a more dramatic main context, that being a mother's search for her runaway daughter who has fallen in with a sleazy crime boss renowned for peddling drugs and hookers. A lot of familiar faces pop up, most notably Carrie Fisher who is under-utilised in an arc…

Los Angeles's finest go after pornographers, drug dealers and pimps. Ronny Cox. Betty: Carrie Fisher. Walsh: Frank Gorshin. Hawkins: Leon Isaac Kennedy. Pauline: Trish Van Devere. Daley: Ben Frank. Directed by Penelope Spheeris.

Director Penelope Spheeris turns in her flattest movie yet, recycling one cliche after another, interspersed with some of the lowest cop jokes this side of the POLICE ACADEMY films. Three different story lines occupy the running time, coming together only in the person of squad chief Cox. One story concerns a worried mother Devere, who comes to Hollywood looking for her runaway daughter. The girl has fallen in with Gorshin, a pimp who turns his girls into heroin addicts before turning them out onto the streets. Another plot concerns rookie officer Fisher, who discovers an S&M porno film, with underage actors, being shot in a back yard in her neighborhood. The last story centers on the investigation of a New York mobster muscling in on bookmaking operations. How were respectable actors such as Cox, Fisher, and Van Devere lassoed into such a silly film? How did a director known for her unblinking looks as the underside of Los Angeles come up with such a lame, lifeless, cliche-ridden film still so thematically close to her other works? The only thing that comes close to working is the odd-character part. The film does, however, boast an impressive visual style that highlights the lurid side of Hollywood Boulevard.

MOVIE REVIEW : ‘VICE SQUAD’ SHOULD STAY UNDERCOVER

Is truth stranger than fiction? Certainly when it comes to “Hollywood Vice Squad” (citywide), a dull, dopey movie that claims to have been based on actual police cases. Normally we’d write that off as Hollywood hyperbole, especially since most of the vice officers in the film behave with all the cool precision of the Three Stooges gone undercover. Yet, the movie’s script was written by James J. Docherty, a 22-year LAPD veteran and currently a commanding officer for the city’s vice division.

Docherty says in the production notes that he’s “taken certain dramatic license,” which perhaps accounts for why most of the bumbling detectives do everything but wear a big placard around their necks saying “Hollywood Vice: Please Keep All Important Evidence in Your Pockets.” One vice team, assigned to discreetly follow an important suspect, scrambles into a car, slams the doors and screeches off in pursuit, all in full view of the criminal. (The crook, gliding along in his limousine, glances in his rear-view mirror and grumbles, “They must be cops. Who else would be following us?”)

The film’s creaky story line revolves around a pretty Midwestern teen runaway who (surprise!) has turned to prostitution and drugs while in the clutches of a sleazeball pimp (Frank Gorshin) who wears more gold chains than Mr. T. While her mother and the local police join in the hunt, we see the vice squad in action, chasing transvestite hookers, nabbing PCP goofballs, raiding bookies and breaking up teen pornography rings.

You’d think, with her wonderful feel for gritty authenticity and obsessive streetwise characters, that this would be lively material for director Penelope Spheeris, who did “Decline of Western Civilization” and “The Boys Next Door.” But despite an occasional unsettling touch (the pimp’s secretary is a ghoulish-looking woman confined to a wheelchair), Spheeris seems bored and disinterested, as if she were directing with one eye on the camera and the other on the clock.

The film’s one potentially intriguing character is a rookie woman cop (Carrie Fisher), but we never see enough of her rude introduction to Sin City to really care about any moral dillemmas she might have. The rest of the oddball cast (which includes Ronny Cox, Leon Isaac Kennedy, Joey Travolta and Trish Van Devere) is uniformly forgettable. You could excuse the vice cops, who after all, spend most of their time masquerading as pimps and johns, but the bad acting bug seems to have infected the rest of the cast as well.

If Mr. Docherty is going to try his hand at more scripts, our advice is--read some Joseph Wambaugh or George V. Higgins. The dialogue here sounds suspiciously like Hollywood shoptalk. When a police captain hears about a new plan to capture a scuzzy pimp, he beams, “Slavery. I love it!” To our untrained ears, that’s not vice lingo. That sounds like something a studio executive would say if he were pitched a story about a wacky gang of 19th-Century Brat Pack plantation owners.

Review: vice squad.

You know it’s hard out there for a pimp, but that wasn’t always the case.

Vice Squad

You know it’s hard out there for a pimp, but that wasn’t always the case. In the beginning, there was Ramrod, the scarfaced, rockabilly psycho whose reign of terror on Ho Boulevard anchors Vice Squad , a definitive second-feature sleazterpiece (executive produced by, among others, Frank Capra Jr. and former AMPAS president Robert Rehme). The film’s post- Urban Cowboy tagline reads “On the street, the real trick is staying alive .” And, as played by Wings Hauser as though he gargled octane between takes, Ramrod struts into the film with Tony Manero’s rapacious charm, coolly hunting down the trifling whore (MTV charter VJ Nina Blackwood) who made off with his cut, nuzzling up to the locked door of her motel hideaway and oozing until she unlocks the door. “I cannot believe how stupid you are,” he leers, clearly not having any time for sweets, before tying her down to the vibrating mattress, stuffing her mouth with single-ply toilet tissue, removing his suede Stetson, retrofitting a wire clothing hangar, and scrambling her womb into eggs benedict.

Vice Squad was initially conceived as a diffuse series of episodes culled from the real-life experiences of an L.A. beat cop (the pseudonymous Kenneth Peters): a hard, direct look at a diffuse, scattered underground world. Somewhere along the way director Gary A. Sherman (with his appropriate acronym) honed it down to one linear narrative, effectively ramping up the intensity and using all other separate-but-equal subplots as indecently entertaining window dressing: tricks, transsexuals, tatted leathermen, junkies, sugar pimps, chickenhawks, and kung fu septuagenarians. Season Hubley plays Princess, a mom-by-day-madam-by-night browbeaten into fingering Ramrod (in every sense) for the murder of her fellow prostitutes on Detective Tom Walsh’s (Gary Swanson) wiretap. Entrapped and enraged, Ramrod busts out of the squad car, and the rest of the film’s one-night timeline becomes a two-pronged manhunt: find either Princess or Ramrod before they find each other.

A hysterically violent and seamy flick, Squad ’s vices are its virtue, especially since D.P. John Alcott (i.e. cinematographer of perhaps the most sumptuously opulent film ever: Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon ) maintains a surprising street cred by filming every raunchy setup from a sewer’s-eye view. Okay, so the mix of intense, bloody retribution and scuzzy, goonshow locations runs the risk of both encouraging a Travis Bickle-style street-cleansing “real rain” solution and commodifying street life—as does the film’s rich old pervert who hires Princess to pretend she’s mourning him at his private, Penthouse Forum wake. But Princess handily shoots down any such airs—and reaffirms the film’s lowbrow veracity—when she bluntly informs Walsh, her chivalrous would-be suitor from the right side of the tracks, that he’s “never gonna change the streets.” Especially since he can’t even afford her on his salary. It’s hard out there for a po po.

The Suicide Squad team is made up of villains, captured and kept in a secret prison, and offered reduced sentences if they participate in dangerous missions. In the tradition of continuity within DCEU films, the event comes in the wake of Superman's death and the seclusion of Batman after the events that occurred in Batman V Superman. Agency head Amanda Waller, played by award-winning actress Viola Davis, is the one striking deals with the inmates of Belle Reve Prison. Heading “Task Force X” is Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, alongside Will Smith’s Deadshot, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, Jay Hernandez’s El Diablo, Adewale Akinnuoye’s Killer Croc, and Adam Beach’s Slipknot. Karen Fukuhara’s Katana also joins the mission to keep Rick safe from the villains. Jared Leto (Joker) and Ben Affleck (Batman) have smaller roles in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad , as does Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress.

  • Jammu and Kashmir to go to polls in 3 phases from September 18
  • Omar Abdullah says Assembly will pass resolution against ending Article 370
  • Article 370 was abrogated from the Valley on August 5, 2019

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Saturday said that the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will pass a resolution against the Centre's decision to end Article 370 in its first decision after the Assembly polls in the Union Territory .

Often hitting out at abrogation of Article 370, which came into enactment on August 5, 2019, after a Bill was passed both in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, Omar Abdullah said that a resolution against the centre's decision to strip the region of its statehood and special status would be the Assembly's first order of business.

"The Jammu and Kashmir assembly, in its first order of business after elections, will pass a resolution against the centre's decision to strip the region of its statehood and special status," the former Chief Minister said.

Notably, Omar Abdullah's remarks came a day after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir in three phases on September 18, 25 and October 1. The counting of votes will take place on October 4.

The announcement of elections for the 90-member Assembly came a month after the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status, with a directive to conduct elections in the Union Territory by September 30.

The last Assembly elections in the Valley were held in November-December 2014. Jammu and Kashmir has been under the President's Rule since December 19, 2018 .

After the announcement of polls on Friday, Omar Abdullah opted to refrain from participating until Jammu and Kashmir's statehood is restored. His father and National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah will lead the party in the upcoming elections.

"I thank God for this decision. Earlier, there was speculation about the dates being set between the 20th and 25th, so I am pleased they have been moved up," Farooq Abdullah said, expressing hope for the end of central rule in the Union Territory.

"We were prepared for the parliamentary elections and had requested that the assembly elections be held concurrently, but that did not happen," the veteran politician added.

Meanwhile, several political parties across Jammu and Kashmir, including Congress, BJP, CPI(M) and the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) hailed the Election Commission's announcement of three-phase assembly elections.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary GA Mir expressed appreciation for the EC's decision, noting that it reflected the public's aspirations for a popular government.

"People are eagerly waiting for the formation of a popular government and the announcement of the polls reflects the aspirations of the people. We have full faith that people in Jammu and Kashmir will take part in the elections in a big way," Mir said.

Itija Mufti, a prominent People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader and the daughter of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, also welcomed the EC's announcement.

Carrie Fisher working undercover in the Hollywood Vice Squad to try and take down a prostitution ring and free a young fresh Robin Wright directed by Penelope Spheeris on paper should work like gangbusters but the script is so atrocious it's hard to stomach it from start to finish especially with that horrific shootout at the end.

  3. Hollywood Vice Squad (1986)

My review was written in March 1986 after a screening on Manhattan's UES. "Hollywood Vice Squad" is producer Sandy Howard's silly, unfunny spoof followup to his 1982 action hit "Vice Squad". Earlier film worked well as a thriller but the new one is an episodic mishmash that is strictly dullsville.

  4. ‎Reviews of Hollywood Vice Squad • Letterboxd

To be serious, I don't think this movie really knows what it wants to be. As a serious crime drama it's about as original and interesting as a pile of dirt. As a comedy it's not even funny accidently. Reading an autopsy report would be funnier than this. I do think the intention was for Hollywood Vice Squad to be serious and funny,…

  21. Vice Squad (1982)

"Vice Squad" is a raw and depressing movie, which is exactly the kind of ambiance director Gary Sherman wanted to reflect for his epic about Hollywood after dark. 22. Review: Vice Squad

A hysterically violent and seamy flick, Squad 's vices are its virtue, especially since D.P.
