It is rightly said, “A beautiful body perishes, but a work of art dies not”. Art is indeed a universal language; it is that form of expression which needs no tongue. The world has given birth to several outstanding artists who do justice to this incredible practice, the widespread popularity of various art forms all over the world has created a whirlpool of enthusiasm towards it. Today, even though we are separated by miles of distances and barbs of wire, the language of art will always be a unifying factor between us.

India has been an avid patron of art since the very early ages. The list of Indian artists celebrated for their distinctive and creative artwork is long. Even though the world has advanced quite a bit when it comes to art, the ancient Indian forms of paintings are still prevalent in minute regions of India. Blossoming like buds of a flower, these arts are not widely known, but are no less spectacular to the eye. And one such art form is the Kangra painting.

Originated in the North-eastern state of Himachal Pradesh , Kangra paintings were highly endorsed in its name-sake city. Kangra School of Painting came into existence after the gradual decline of the Basohli art style in the middle of the 18th century. The new up-gradation and features showcased in the Kangra paintings were severely lauded by the critics and public. The tremendous support given to this form of painting led to the subsequent replacement of the Pahari art (art practiced in hilly regions of India) by the Kangra art. The main centers where this art form is extensively practiced are Bilaspur, Nurpur, Guler, and of course, Kangra. Later on, it also made its way to other regions of India including Kullu, Suket, Arki, and others. Although numerous kings and aristocrats acted as patrons to the Kangra painting, this art form came into prominence from the reign of Maharaja Sansar Chand.

The story of Kangra paintings and how they came into existence begins in Guler (Guler is a tiny hill state situated near Himachal Pradesh) sometime in the early 18th century. A Kashmiri family well versed in the method of painting practiced by the Mughals asked for refuge in the court of Guler under Raja Dalip Singh. This fateful event led to the inter-mixing of the native artists of Guler and the Kashmiri painters. Soon, the local artists came to be heavily affected by the new style of paintings and began experimenting with it. The usual paintings depicting love and portrait images of kings and their queens came to be replaced by more scenes involving nature and the love stories of Radha and Krishna. Thus, the Kangra paintings slowly made their way into society.

Moving a couple of years forward, the Kangra paintings reached their pinnacle under Maharaja Sansar Chand, who was known for his open-mindedness and his fervent devotion towards Lord Krishna. It is said that he used to pay artists handsomely to depict scenes from the lifetime of Lord Krishna. It is from here that the Kangra began to be known as one of the most alluring and unique art forms of India.

The central idea behind the Kangra painting is often the immersive love story of Radha and Krishna. The famous bhakti movement and devotional ideas of that era gave rise to the visual representation of common Hindu love stories enjoyed by the majority of the population in the early ages. The romantic poems composed by Jayadeva (known as Gita Govinda) frequently provided a reference point for artists to visualize and paint the love life and legends of Radha-Krishna. This beautiful visual expression of the duo stimulated the devotional community and provided a spiritual gateway for them to immerse in. Common Kangra paintings include scenes of Krishna merrily dancing and playing in the forests while the gopis secretly watch him, conversations between Radha and Krishna are also frequently portrayed in the Kangra paintings. These paintings are considered a pure form of art, elevating the story it narrates through the tender stroke of the brush and fresh colors.

If you observe, you’ll notice that majority of the Kangra paintings have a realistic and lifelike approach, focusing heavily on nature. In simpler terms, there is the extensive usage of natural elements in the paintings such as creepers, trees, flowering plants, rivers, and such, along with the repetitive use of the color green and its numerous shades. The Kangra paintings are distinctly known for their meticulousness. They make use of fresh hues while refining the countenance of women, thus conveniently making them look even more feminine. With further developments in the art form, Kangra artists began depicting harsher scenes in their paintings such as thunder, lightning strokes, and heavy rain.

The colors used in the making of the Kangra paintings are made out of vegetable extracts and other naturally made substances. Kangra artists rarely use artificial colors in their paintings. The colors red, yellow, and green can be seen throughout the paintings due to their brightness.

Himachal Pradesh , state of India , in the extreme northern part of the Asian subcontinent. It is bounded by Jammu and Kashmir union territory to the northwest and Ladakh union territory to the northeast, by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the east, and by the states of Uttarakhand to the southeast, Haryana to the south, and Punjab to the west. Himachal Pradesh occupies a region of scenic splendour in the western Himalayas , offering a multitextured display of lofty snow-clad mountains, deep gorges, thickly forested valleys, large lakes, terraced fields, and cascading streams. Indeed, the name of the state is a reference to its setting: Himachal means “snowy slopes” (Sanskrit: hima , “snow”; acal , “slopes”), and Pradesh means “state.”

Elevations in the southern tract of the region average about 1,600 feet (500 metres), while in the northern tract they range between 3,000 and 5,000 feet (900 and 1,500 metres). To the north of the Siwaliks are the Lesser (or Lower) Himalayas , which rise to about 15,000 feet (4,500 metres). Within this region are the spectacular snow-capped Dhaola Dhar and Pir Panjal ranges. To the north again is the Zaskar Range , which reaches elevations of more than 22,000 feet (6,700 metres), towering over the other ranges in the region. Many active mountain glaciers originate in this area.

Himachal Pradesh has many perennial snow-fed rivers and streams, in addition to four major watercourses. The eastern portion of the state is drained primarily by the Sutlej River , which rises in Tibet . Draining the western part of Himachal Pradesh are the Chenab (Chandra-Bhaga), Ravi , and Beas rivers, which have their source in the Great Himalayas .

The Siwalik region has hot summers (March to June), with temperatures rising above 100 °F (38 °C), cool and dry winters (October to February), and a wet season (July to September), with rains brought by the southwestern monsoon . As elevations increase farther north, the climate becomes wetter and cooler. In the Great Himalayas, winters are bitterly cold and snowy, with temperatures dropping below 0 °F (–18 °C).

The population of Himachal Pradesh is composed of a variety of distinct ethnolinguistic groups and social castes . Among the most prominent communities are the Gaddi (Gaddi), Gujari, Kinnauri, Lahuli, and Pangwali. The capitals of the former princely states, including Bilaspur , Mandi , Chamba , and Kullu , are now district headquarters. Dalhousie , Kasauli, and Sabathu are hill resorts of British origin. Kangra , Palampur, Solan, and Dharmshala are other notable towns in the state.

Most people in Himachal Pradesh depend for their livelihood on agriculture, pastoralism, transhumance (seasonal herding), horticulture, and forestry. However, the government of Himachal Pradesh has encouraged the development and dispersal of manufacturing, with different towns—mostly in the southern part of the state—often specializing in the manufacture of particular goods. Meanwhile, Rajban is identified with cement production, and Parwanoo is recognized for its processed fruits, tractor parts, and electronics. Shimla is also known for its manufacture of electrical goods, while paper and hardboard products generally have come from Baddi and Barotiwala. Alongside the growth of heavier industry, thousands of artisan-based small-scale manufacturing units have remained in operation across the state.

The state has implemented a series of development plans based on the utilization of its abundant hydropower potential and mineral and forest resources. Himachal Pradesh produces a significant portion of India’s hydroelectric power. Existing hydropower plants include a station on the Ulh River at Jogindarnagar, the massive Bhakra Dam on the Sutlej River , the Pong Dam on the Beas River , and the Giri Dam on the Giri River. Himachal Pradesh also has embarked on joint-venture hydropower projects with the central government, such as the large Nathpa Jhakri project in Shimla district. To combat a serious soil-erosion problem in the Siwaliks and to protect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, the state has launched a reforestation program. It also has instituted stricter enforcement of environmental laws.

Despite its remote location, Himachal Pradesh has a reasonably well-developed infrastructure that not only has aided domestic mobility but also has helped in the promotion of tourism. Scenic narrow-gauge rail lines run from Kalka to Shimla and from Pathankot (in Punjab ) to Jogindarnagar. There also is a railhead in Una . Roads, however, crisscrossing through the ranges and valleys, serve as the communications lifeline of Himachal Pradesh; the state operates many bus routes throughout the network. New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut on Thursday made a strong demand in Lok Sabha for preserving the art forms and building traditions of Himachal Pradesh.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Ranaut said several art forms of Himachal Pradesh are on the verge of extinction and will soon become extinct. She urged the government to take steps to preserve them.

“We have the kath kuni style of building houses or the tradition of making clothes from sheep and yak wool or the musical traditions of Spiti, Kinnaur and Bharmour. They all are becoming extinct,” said Ranaut, who represents the Mandi constituency in Lower House.

She said the traditional Himachali dresses such as jackets, caps and sweaters made from sheep and yak wool fetch a good price abroad and they need to be preserved.
