A murder happens in the city, and a sound designer, Akira, was suspected to be the murderer. But, she says that she is innocent and doesn’t know anything about the murder. Akira has come to the place to record the birds’ voices for her next movie project. Akira visits an antique shop, where she finds the dress of a Cinderella, which she brought to her house. Akira experiences some weird happenings at home after the arrival of the dress. After some time, Ramya, a wealthy girl, is killed. All the murders are by the ghost, and it targets Ramya’s mother. Why did it kill people? Were they the reason for Cinderella’s death? The rest of the plot deals with it.

Star Performance

Raai Laxmi had given a fantastic performance. Robo Shankar appears in a guest role.

The plot is good but not unique. As we had witnessed umpteen horror stories, this film doesn’t impress us with its story plot. However, the performance of Rai Laxmi and some exciting scenes make us sit and watch the movie. Robo Shankar’s comedy didn’t work out. The flashback scenes are good, and it gives a strong follow up for the plot. The cinematography and the visuals are worth mentioning.

Cinderella movie review: A multi-racial retelling of the story with a feminist tinge

Cinderella is a well-known fairy tale and over the years there have been numerous versions of it. The tale's origins appear to date back to a Chinese story from the ninth century known as 'Yeh Shen' or 'Ye Xian'. Thereafter, almost every culture seems to have its own version and every storyteller his or her tale.

Director Kay Cannon's 'Cinderella' is a live-action, musical adaptation of the fairy tale. With wit, sarcasm, a tinge of feminism, contemporary messages and a multi-racial representation, the tale appears to be fantastically fresh and appealing.

Set in an "old-fashioned kingdom bound by tradition", the film begins with telling us how a young girl Ella got rechristened 'Cinderella', a name that is etched in our minds forever.

Living with her "practical" stepmother and stepsisters -- the obnoxious Malvolia and the self-absorbed Narissa -- Cinderella spends most of her time in the basement of her house along with her three pet mice.

She is not a damsel in distress, but a young woman with big dreams and aspirations. She is not interested in marriage; instead, she wants to be a businesswoman, travel the world and be a dress designer owning her garment shop.

On the other hand, Prince Robert, the "idiot son" of the King, is coaxed by his family to settle down. Select a girl and get married, they tell him. His father reminds him, "Kings marry for power, not love."

Unbeknownst to Cinderella, Prince Robert sets his eyes on her at a chance meeting in the market square, where she sells him a dress that she had designed. He cajoles her to go to the ball (where the Prince is supposed to select his future wife). "There will be guests there from all over the world," he says to her. "Open-minded people with cash to spare. I know them, I could introduce you to them if you like."

Hoping for a business opportunity, she agrees to go to the ball. After which, we all know how Cinderella lands up at the ball with the help of her godmother. At the ball, when Prince Robert proposes to her, says to her , "You'll become royalty." Cinderella turns down his proposal by telling him, "But what about my work. I have dreams."

What takes you by surprise, in a totally unexpected way, is the 'Fabulous Godmother' played by Billy Porter. Despite being on screen for a limited time with an outlandish outfit and flashy disposition, he leaves his mark in your memory space.

The others who are equally effective with their performances are: Camilla Cabello as Cinderella, Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Robert, Idina Menzel as the Stepmother, Pierce Brosnan as King Rowan, Minnie Driver as Queen Mother Beatrice, and Tallulah Greive as Princess Gwen.

Packed with contemporary songs set to racy music -- solos, duets, choruses, ensembles and dance sequences, the narrative seamlessly unravels like a dream. There are some 14 tracks, which have been intelligently interwoven in the narrative. Some of the songs are: Madonna's 'Material Girl', Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation / You Gotta Be' and Freddie Mercury's 'Somebody to Love'. Apart from these oft-heard numbers, there are some original tracks too.

Production designer Paul Kirby's sets and Ellen Mirojnick's costumes complement each other. They are colourfully pitch-perfect, filling DOP Henry Braham's frames with dreamy pastel shades that transport you to the film's dream locales.

'Thangalaan': Stunning visuals and social commentary, yet missing the emotional core | Movie Review

Pa Ranjith’s Thangalaan, starring Chiyaan Vikram, was one of the most anticipated films of the year, and it’s clear that the buzz was well-deserved. Now that the film has finally arrived in theatres, it can be said with confidence that it lives up to the hype. Thangalaan is a breathtaking visual spectacle, elevated by powerful performances from its cast.

The film is set against the backdrop of a British-led expedition to unearth the gold mines of Kolar. Coloniser Clement strikes a deal with the tribe, led by Thangalaan (Vikram), offering them a share of the gold in exchange for their participation in the excavation.

Thangalaan is not just a mythical action drama; it’s a powerful narrative that tackles a significant social issue—the relentless struggle for power and the oppression of society’s marginalised. The film vividly portrays how the oppressed rise against their oppressors. Thangalaan, the central character, is a figure of immense physical strength and unyielding ambition. His deep-rooted desire to uplift his tribe drives him to make difficult choices, even if it means aligning with the very forces that seek to dominate them, all in pursuit of a better future for his people.

It is great how when a movie talks about something so serious, director Pa Ranjith weaves a mythical narrative into it making the movie more tantalising. Vikram is the undeniable heart and soul of Thangalaan, delivering a performance that is nothing short of extraordinary. As Thangalaan, he commands the screen with a potent mix of intensity and depth, fully embodying a character who is as conflicted within as he is challenged by the external dangers of his quest. Vikram doesn’t just play the role—he lives it, capturing the internal battle of a man torn between his ambitions and the harsh realities he faces. Parvathy, as Gangamma, Thangalaan’s wife, delivers a performance that is both impactful and memorable. Gangamma is far from a mere follower of her husband; she stands as a strong, independent character with her own perspective and influence within the story. Malavika Mohanan plays the role of Aarathi, and she too is fierce and powerful. Her initial few scenes as Aarathi is truly mindblowing.

Malavika Mohanan delivers a fierce and powerful performance as Aarathi, with her initial scenes being particularly striking. Cinematography by A. Kishor Kumar enhances the film, showcasing some truly remarkable visuals. While many scenes, especially those featuring lush greenery and aerial shots, are visually impressive, the sequences set in the mines could have been executed with greater finesse.

Certain parts of the movie, with their mythical elements, evoke a sense of horror, which adds a layer of fun. What’s truly impressive about the film is that it reveals much more beneath the surface. It unfolds like an onion, gradually peeling back layers to reveal deeper complexities.

The film consistently addresses caste politics, exploring the dynamics between the oppressor and the oppressed. Thangalaan's tribe is viewed with contempt by British officers, who exploit their naivety. Throughout the movie, Ranjith delivers a powerful critique of Brahminism and the Varna system. However, he maintains the tribe's dignity by not overtly favouring one side in his portrayal. The movie also explores a parallel theme of the corrupting power of greed. The relentless pursuit of gold, which drives everyone involved, including the tribe, clouds their judgment and distorts their rationality.

Ranjith addresses the issues of Brahminism and Buddhism with a balanced portrayal, presenting perspectives from both sides. Women in the film are depicted as individuals with distinct identities, rather than mere background figures. While the background score is effective, the music could have been more impactful. Given the story's intensity, stronger rhythms and beats might have been more fitting, but music director G. V. Prakash Kumar chose a folk style that, while enjoyable, lacks the power needed for the story. 

However, the film falters when it comes to establishing an emotional connection with the characters. It lacks the depth needed for the audience to fully invest in the main characters' journeys. In one particular scene, which impacts Thangalaan and his family, the intended emotional weight falls flat. The effort to create a politically correct narrative seems to have come at the expense of a strong story-driven connection.

Thangalaan stands out as one of Vikram's finest performances, offering him ample scope for acting and showcasing his skills. The first half of the film is deeply engaging, with several edge-of-your-seat moments. While the second half remains thrilling, it occasionally slows down. The climax is particularly powerful, delivering a compelling statement. Thangalaan is definitely a must-see in theatres, with its enchanting story and exceptional performances making it a spectacle that film enthusiasts shouldn't miss.

Thangalaan Review: பா.ரஞ்சித், தன்னுடைய வழக்கமான நிலத்திற்கான போர், மாட்டு இறைச்சி பிரச்சாரம், புத்தர் கோட்பாடு என அனைத்தையும் கொண்டு வந்து விட்டார். கிஷோரின் தங்கலான் உலகத்தை கேமரா கண்கள் கன கச்சிதமாக படம் பிடித்து இருக்கிறது.

Thangalaan Review: இயக்குநர் பா ரஞ்சித் இயக்கத்தில் நடிகர் விக்ரம், நடிகை பார்வதி, நடிகை மாளவிகா மோகனன், பசுபதி உள்ளிட்ட பல நட்சத்திரங்கள் நடித்து, இன்று வெளியாகி இருக்கும் திரைப்படம் தங்கலான். இந்தத் திரைப்படத்திற்கு பிரபல இசையமைப்பாளரான ஜி வி பிரகாஷ் குமார் இசையமைத்திருக்கிறார்.

தங்கலான் சொல்லும் கதை என்ன?

வட ஆற்காடு வேப்பூர் கிராமத்தில் தங்கலான் முனி (விக்ரம்) தன்னுடையை மனைவி கங்கம்மா, ( பார்வதி) குழந்தைகள் மற்றும் தன் சனத்தோடு, தனக்கான நிலத்தில் பயிர் செய்து நிம்மதியாக வாழ்ந்து வருகிறான். இதனை பார்த்து பொறுக்காத ஊர் மிராசு, சூழ்ச்சி செய்து, அவனையும் அவனது மகன்களையும் பண்ணை அடிமையாக பணி அமர்த்துகிறார். இதற்கிடையே வரும் ஆங்கில துரை கிளவ்ன் (டேனியல்) அந்தக் காட்டில் இருக்கும் தங்கத்தை எடுக்க ஊராரின் உதவியை கேட்கிறார். மிராசின் அடிமையாக இருப்பதை விட, துரைக்கு உதவி செய்து கூலி வாங்கி, ரோஷத்தோடு வாழ நினைக்கிறான் தங்கலான். இதனையடுத்து அவனுடைய மகன் அசோகன் மற்றும் ராமானுஜம் வழியில் அந்தனன் ( பசுபதி) உள்ளிட்டோர் செல்கின்றனர்.

ஒரு கட்டத்தில் அவனுடன் ஊராரும் சேர்ந்து கொள்கின்றனர். ஆனால், அங்கிருக்கும் தங்கத்தை தன் உயிராக பாதுகாத்து நிற்கின்றனர் ஆரத்தியும் ( மாளவிகா) அவனது குழுவும். பொன்னை நெருங்க வரும் நபர்களின் உயிர்களை காவு வாங்கும் அவர்களை மீறி, இறுதியில் தங்கலான் குழு தங்கத்தை எடுத்தார்களா? இல்லையா? அதன் பின்னர் என்ன ஆனது என்பது படத்தின் கதை.

தங்கலான் முனி கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு தன்னுடைய உடல், பொருள், ஆவி என வழக்கம் போல, தன்னை மொத்தமாக கொடுத்து இருக்கிறார் விக்ரம். தங்கலானை அடக்கும் ராணியாகவும், அன்பை அரட்டுத்தனமாக காட்டுபவளாகவும் கங்கம்மா கதாபாத்திரத்தில் மிரட்டி இருக்கிறார் நடிகை பார்வதி . அவளுக்கும், தங்கலானுக்கும் இடையே நடக்கும் ரொமான்ஸ் அழகோ அழகு.

கதாபாத்திரங்களின் கச்சித தேர்வு

பொன்னை பாதுகாக்கும் ஆரத்தியாக மாளவிகா. ஆக்ஷனில் அதகளம் செய்திருக்கும் அவரின் கடின உழைப்புக்கு தனி பாராட்டுகள். ராமானுஜம் வழியில் வந்த அந்தணன் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் பசுபதி தன்னுடைய நடிப்பின் முதிர்ச்சியை காண்பித்து இருக்கிறார். இதர கதாபாத்திரங்களும் கவனம் ஈர்க்கின்றன.

சார்பட்டா பரம்பரை படத்தில் தன்னுடைய திரை கிராப்டின் மூலம் வட சென்னை பாக்சிக்கின் உலகத்தை கண் முன்னே நிறுத்திய பா. ரஞ்சித் , தங்கலானில் கோலார் தங்கவயலில் ஆங்கிலேயர் ஆட்சி காலத்தில் அவர்களுக்கு தங்கத்தை எடுக்க உதவிய மக்களின் உலகத்தை கண் முன்னே நிறுத்தி இருக்கிறார். விக்ரமுடைய நடிப்புத்தீனிக்கு முற்றிலுமாக வேறொரு பரிணாம களத்தை அமைத்து கொடுத்து அவரை நடிப்பில் தங்கலானை மின்ன வைத்திருக்கிறார்

மிரட்டியிருக்கும் ஜீ.வி.பிரகாஷ்

நடிகர்களுக்கான அலங்காரம், ஒப்பனை, ஆக்ஷன் என எல்லாவற்றிலும் முழுக்க முழுக்க உண்மைத் தன்மையை கொண்டு வர முயன்று இருக்கிறார். வசனங்கள் கவனம் ஈர்க்கின்றன. ஒரு அட்வென்சர் கதைக்கான களத்தையும், மாயா ஜாலத்தையும் திரைக்கதையில் கொண்டு வந்திருக்கும் பா.ரஞ்சித், தன்னுடைய வழக்கமான நிலத்திற்கான போர், மாட்டு இறைச்சி பிரச்சாரம், புத்தர் கோட்பாடு என அனைத்தையும் கொண்டு வந்து விட்டார். கிஷோரின் தங்கலான் உலகத்தை கேமரா கண்கள் கன கச்சிதமாக படம் பிடித்து இருக்கிறது. ஜிவி பிரகாஷ் குமார் தன்னுடைய இசையால் படத்தை மொத்தமாக தாங்கி நின்று மிரட்டி இருக்கிறார்.

இவையனைத்தும் படத்தின் பலமாக இருந்தாலும், திரைக்கதையில் அவ்வப்போது குறைபட்டு நிற்கும் திரைக்கதை சுவாரசியமின்மை நமக்கு சோர்வை தருகின்றன. அந்த சோர்வு நம் கண்களை அவ்வப்போது திரையில் இருந்து விலக வைக்கின்றன. அது படத்தின் பலவீனமாக வும் மாறி இருக்கிறது. அவை களைய பட்டிருந்தால் தங்கலான் பொன்னாய் மின்னி இருப்பான்.

Director Pa Ranjith is one filmmaker with a powerful voice in Tamil cinema. Whether one agrees or not, his voice is significant and cannot be ignored. When he announced his collaboration with actor Chiyaan Vikram in 2021, it excited many. And the excitement grew multifold over the years and became one of the most anticipated films of 2024. Did 'Thangalaan' manage to fulfil the expectations? Let's find out!

Thangalaan (Chiyaan Vikram), Gangamma (Parvathy Thiruvothu) and their five children live in North Arcot where they rely on agriculture. However, their land is grabbed by the upper-class landlord using deceitful tactics. In the 1800s, Lord Clement, a British General, expressed his desire to trace gold near their village. However, a local myth claims that the sorceress Aarathi (Malavika Mohanan), guards the area. Thangalaan and the rest of the villagers believe in the myth.

Director Pa Ranjith blends magical realism with themes of oppression, untouchability, and inequality. How do Thangalaan and his people fight for their rights and discover the true purpose of life? Is the myth about Aarathi true? These questions are explored over the course of two and a half hours.

Filmmaker Ranjith and his stories of oppression have a special place in history. They are evocative and raise the most important questions about one's rights. 'Thangalaan' is no different. Set in the Kolar Gold Fields, the film is about how common citizens are oppressed by the landlords initially and eventually by the Britishers. Along with the story of oppression, we get a fantasy element, headlined by Aarathi.

The plot of 'Thangalaan' seems interesting on paper. It follows the 'history repeats itself' template i.e. how ancestors fought for liberation and how Thangalaan continues to do so in his time. However, 'Thangalaan' seems to be the weakest work in director Pa Ranjith's filmography. The film's screenplay is too abstract, which might not be everyone's cup of tea. A lot relies on Thangalaan, the mythical story and his hallucinations about Aarathi.

The screenplay is slow and lacks engaging elevation sequences. Despite the brilliant performances from the lead cast, 'Thangalaan' is a disappointing watch. The tedious first half and the convoluted second half make the film a middling affair. Ranjith used sync sound, which is a major drawback, and it is hard to follow their dialect and understand their emotions.

The film's mythical story and political themes are muddled, affecting the overall impact. The visual effects are tacky and fall short given the film's large-scale production. However, composer GV Prakash Kumar’s music and background score do manage to elevate the film to an extent.

That said, there are some brilliant stretches in the film. Be it the first time when Chiyaan Vikram wears a pant-shirt or when the women in the village wear a blouse, these sequences are goosebumps-inducing. However, such moments are sporadic and not consistently present throughout the film.

Actors Chiyaan Vikram, Parvathy, Malavika Mohanan and Daniel Caltagirone do the heavy lifting with their brilliant performances. Vikram as Thangalaan is simply extraordinary, fully embodying his character. Parvathy's Gangamma is feisty, and she once again proves why she is one of the best performers we have. Malavika Mohanan and Daniel Caltagirone also give commendable performances.

Director Julian Farino ’s “The Union” follows Mike ( Mark Wahlberg ), a construction worker content with his job, dive bar outings with his friends, and sleeping with his former seventh-grade teacher (an awkward joke that remains a punchline over the course of the film’s entirety). When his adolescent flame, Roxanne ( Halle Berry ) returns to the east coast after decades of no contact, what he thinks is a meet cute down memory lane turns into an international intelligence operation. 

Hackers have accessed the personal information of all of the Western world’s government employees, from soldiers to cops and the FBI. Agent Roxanne and her cut-to-the-chase boss Tom (J.K. Simmons) are spearheading the mission to retrieve the hack to prevent it from getting in the wrong hands. Their titular organization, The Union, is a small, highly secretive agency within the government, akin to the operations of the CIA. They’re “an invisible army that keeps the world running,” an agency that looks for street-smart, blue collar individuals who fly under the radar. Kidnapping Mike from New Jersey to London, Roxanne enlists his help for this high-stakes assignment for one sole reason: “He’s a nobody.” It’s a flimsy premise that precedes an equally thin film.

There’s no driving force when it comes to the characters. We suspend disbelief that Mike would be remotely interested in this life-threatening operation for which he has no true technical skills solely out of nostalgic romance and maybe a hint of patriotic duty (the latter of which is not far off but assumed more for Wahlberg’s habitual social sentiments than anything in-script). On paper, the plot seems to be the sole consideration of the film, while character development and world-building this criminal underbelly falls to the wayside. 

Everything about “The Union” is painstakingly familiar. Wahlberg kicks back and lounges comfortably in his habitual role: a laid back, kinda cocky east coaster who juggles punchlines and machismo. Berry, who is fully capable of being a compelling action star, (most recently in the third installment of the John Wick franchise), attempts her best with the film’s shoddy script. “The Union” hits bullet points on its outline with an overwhelming sense of tired obligation and stunted creativity. Its leads have no chemistry and being that their will-they-won’t-they serves as the story’s main attempt at depth, the emotive capabilities of the film sputter and shut down. 

“The Union” delivers tonal whiplash on account of its failure to exceed at either end of its genre attempt at action-comedy. The action is mostly unremarkable, with a few key set pieces that pump the pace, but ultimately neglect to put anything exciting on display. Rebounds of exposition and non-committal world building fudge the film’s flow, making the 105-minute runtime feel like a fight to the finish. 

Its ham-fisted comedic attempts incite semi-indignant smirks and exasperated chuckles rather than genuine, inspired laughter. Most of the jokes hit with the punch of a half-deflated whoopee cushion, and the sneaking feeling that the script was written on the basis of cheap laughs creeps further up your back as the minutes tick on. “The Union” is unspecial and unengaging. It lacks charm and excitement, clutching to simplicity and a lazy script that relies on star power that’s not bright enough to save it.
