An Introduction to the Essay

The word Mother is a very pious word and whosoever is called by the name ‘Mother’ is a person who sacrifices and prioritizes her children over anything. Her whole Life revolves around the well-being of her child, their growth, their development, and their welfare. A Mother not just only gives birth to a child but she takes a Lifelong commitment to take care of her child.

The only unconditional love in the world is the mother's love. My mother is my inspiration, my superhero, my best friend, and my guiding light. My life would not have been beautiful without my mother. Through ups and downs and in every step of life, she holds my hand and supports and encourages me. No matter what happens, my mother is always there beside me- cheering me up and motivating me. All mothers in the world are great and so, we should not celebrate their contribution in our life on Mother's Day only, which is 10th May, but every day of the year and throughout their life. It is because no gesture of appreciation is ever enough when it comes to acknowledging our mother. Her selfless love and sacrifice are the precious of all gifts under the sun.

An Essay on Mothers

My Mother- The Multi-Tasker

Mothers play an important role in everyone’s Life since she acts as a Protector, a Friend, and Guide for Life. A Mother does everything selflessly for her child and without any condition. There the love of a Mother is known to be Unconditional.

The way she manages my family with utter dedication and devotion is inspiring. The relationship with my mother is something very hard to explain. I do not merely love her because she is my mother and we should respect our elders. I love her because she is my world and when I was not able to speak and communicate she took care of me, time and time again. The best part about my mother is that even though I have grown older she knows and understands my needs without me speaking a word. I learned kindness and love from her. She taught me no matter how bad a situation might get, only love can improve it in the most effective way. She has been the rock-solid pillar of my life and in every big moment of my life.

My Mother has constantly supported me throughout my entire Life, whenever I am in a danger or in a situation where I am stuck, she has always been there for me, protected me, and guided me. She has been my favorite teacher who has taught me about Life and the beauty of it. She is the essence of truthfulness, sincerity, and lots of love. The only person who holds our family together is my Mother. She cares for everyone in the house and for the ones in need outside the house as well. One of the most beautiful things that I learned from my mother is empathy. Be it strangers or animals, she treats everyone equally which makes her more amazing. Moreover, she taught me to not hurt anyone on purpose and help people whenever possible. Not only this but also she taught me to not differentiate among rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. She says that it is the heart of a person that makes them beautiful and rich and not temporary possessions.

My Mother is my constant source of encouragement, be it in Life or in school for studies. She has always inspired me to do other activities along with my studies. She has taught me to enjoy every aspect of Life and live Life to the fullest. She wants me to do those things in Life as well which she could not do or pursue. She is my backbone for everything. My mother has inspired me through her hard work and sacrifices. She taught me once never to get disheartened by failure and to keep challenging the failure with our honest effort. And one day, failure will pave the path to our success. The strength of facing hurdles and overcoming it is what I have learned from her.

Mothers have never-ending qualities even though they do not get much credit for their goodness and hard work. She binds everyone in the family and plays a very important part in everyone’s Life. Even when I do something wrong in Life, she scolds me but at the same time, she makes me understand and helps me to get out of the situation. She forgives me after every mistake but ensures that I’ve realized my mistake first. She is the most selfless human being I have ever encountered in my life till now.

My mother knows me in and out. Even if I am lying she catches me immediately and I start feeling guilty. We should never lie to our parents and especially, to our mother. They simply do not deserve it. Mothers spend a significant part of their lives making us capable of standing on our own feet. Sometimes, they have to sacrifice their own career and happiness for that. So a mother's trust should never be destroyed. And when it comes to my mother, I would not change a bit about her. She is the best chef, reading partner, and an independent working woman who can balance almost everything with utmost perfection. Even her imperfection makes me proud of her. Without my mother, I would never become a better human being. My Mother is my biggest strength and makes me, even more, stronger when I go through all my ups and downs in life. The best thing she possesses is her patience. The patience she has is difficult for anyone to have. She deals with every situation in the family, in my life, or even in her Life with so much patience because of the reason the family is bonded so strongly. It is the responsibility of every child to appreciate their Mothers and give them the love and respect that Mothers deserve.

The Power of a Mother’s Love

The power of a mother's love shows as this mother snuggles nose to nose with her newborn

A mother’s love needs to be given unconditionally to establish trust and a firm foundation of emotional intimacy in a child’s life.

The back cover of Dr. Brenda Hunter’s book The Power of Mother Love casts a vision for moms:

“Mother love shapes cultures and individuals. While most mothers know that their love and emotional availability are vital to their children’s well-being, many of us do not understand the profound and long-lasting impact we have in developing our young children’s brains, teaching them first lessons of love, shaping their consciences … At a time when society urges women to seek their worth and personal fulfillment in things that take them away from their families and intimate bonds, Hunter invites women to come home — to their children, their best selves, their hearts.”

Our Relationships With Our Mothers

You and I need to be willing to look inside our own experiences. We need to identify the places still affected by our relationship with our own mother. We can begin that journey by simply being willing to search our hearts and better understand ourselves. Professional counseling may also be a valuable part of that process.

Laura Ingalls Wilder said, “What is there in the attitude of your children toward yourself that you wish were different? Search your heart.”

This is important whether your mother is still living or not. Our relationships with our mother deeply affect us. One of the most powerful gifts we can give to our children is our own emotional health. A first step you can take on this journey is reading The Mom I Want to Be by T. Suzanne Eller. This book is designed to help you rise above your past and give your kids a great future.

A child should never feel as if they need to earn a mother’s love . This will leave a void in their heart all of their life. A mom’s love must be given unconditionally to establish trust and a firm foundation of emotional intimacy in a child’s life. If love is withheld, a child will look for it in a million other ways. Sometimes they will search throughout their lifetime unless they come to some sort of peace with their past. The emotional foundation we give our children at home is foundational to their life. We cannot underestimate the value of the home and the power of a mother’s love.

an essay on the importance of mother

Your Role is a Higher Calling

A mother’s love is all about influence.

The profession of motherhood is all about influence. You and I have an incredible opportunity to influence the next generation by what we do as a mother every day. This is why intentionality is so important during the years that we raise our family. Be intentional about:

  • Your own healing from life’s hurts.
  • Taking care of yourself.
  • Investing in your marriage.
  • Homemaking.

Intentionality increases influence, and influence is something God asks us to be intentional about. We cannot underestimate the power of a mother’s love, the value of home, and the significance of our intentional presence there.

An Important Lesson I Learned From My Mother Essay

My mom is one of the most important people in my life who has taught me many things which help me throughout my life. Her life experience helps me these days to cope with problems and stay forwards looking. One key lesson she has given me is to love yourself before allowing someone to love me. People are different, and it is important to admit this fact to concentrate on personal achievements without paying attention to the thought of the surrounding. My mom’s favorite book is called ‘The Body Is Not an Apology,’ which shows how people of different races and backgrounds accept their individuality and start loving themselves (Taylor, 2021). She constantly provides common examples of people finding their true love when they build healthy relationships with their bodies and minds. Motivational quotes from the book help me build self-confidence and stay more positive toward others.

My mother shows by example what it means to love yourself by being respectful to my father and grateful to her parents. An additional lesson from self-love that I have learned is the ability to say “no” when it is needed. I became able to prioritize my plans and ensure that I do not harm my friends or relatives by being rude. Self-confidence, in this case, allows one to find the right words during communication and build a warmer connection with other people. I have learned from my mom that people who love their personalities are more open to new connections, and surrounding people do not have to spend much time understanding my character’s hidden aspects. By loving yourself, many areas of life can become stable and beneficial for the general body condition.

Different Roles of Mothers

Just like a superhero has many powers of flight, super speed and invisibility, our mothers are also endowed with different powers that enable them to become our best friends, teachers, mentors and caretakers. We often wonder how our mothers could take such distinct roles in our lives, but it is these qualities that make our mothers unique and special. In this short essay on mother, we will see how our mothers accomplish these roles with perfection.

There is an unbreakable bond that develops between mothers and children immediately after their birth. Mothers can understand their needs even before children start speaking or walking, and this is why children might tend to incline more towards their mothers. Since a child’s birth, his mother stays with him, puts up with his anger and joins him in his playful mischief, which naturally builds their relationship. Thus, the mother can become the child’s best friend in no time as she understands him, plays with him and cooks for him.

The mother essay in English also talks about how we learn many things from our mother as she guides us on what is right and wrong. Whenever we make mistakes, our mothers will soon correct them and make us understand why it is not right to do so. She also supports our decisions and is always there for us. A mother is the best teacher and mentor that one could get. Not to mention how she takes care of us when we fall sick and keeps us protected. Our mother is a source of comfort, happiness, relaxation, and they excel in whatever role they perform.

Strengths of a Mother

In this part of the short essay on mother, we will understand her strengths. A mother teaches her child to be strong in any situation, and the mother essay in English shows how a mother could manage different tasks at a time. More than the physical strength, it is her emotional weight and resistance that helps her children overcome problems. She cannot be easily defeated and is always motivated.

Even though our mothers could be strict at times, it is to them that we run towards sharing happy news or talking about our problems. And we need to appreciate her presence by showering them with love. For more exciting content for kids learning , you can check BYJU’S website.

By: Susan Diranian

13 June, 2017

The meaning of being a mother is virtually endless. A mother is a protector, disciplinarian and friend. A mother is a selfless, loving human who must sacrifice many of their wants and needs for the wants and needs of their children. A mother works hard to make sure their child is equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to make it as a competent human being. Being a mother is perhaps the hardest, most rewarding job a woman will ever experience.

Unconditional Love

From the day they are born, a child will test your patience. No matter what they do or say, being a mother means you will love your child unconditionally. Children who receive love and attention from their mother are less likely later on to fall in love with someone who offers love conditionally, whether with behavior control or abuse. Show your child how much you love them with hugs and kisses. Listen to your child as they recount their day, play games or slip a note in their lunch box letting them know how much you love them (Ref 1).

Safety and Security

What Are the Essential Characteristics of a Good Parent?

When a woman becomes pregnant, it is her responsibility to provide a safe and secure environment while her baby grows. This responsibility continues once she becomes a mother, whether it's ensuring her child has a roof over its head to keeping monsters away at night and everything in between. Providing your child with a safe and secure environment protects them from abuse and harm as well as help boost their child's mental and emotional development. Provide a safe, healthy environment for children by reducing risks and stress as well as keeping an eye out on children (Ref 2).

Teacher and Disciplinarian

Being a mother means being there to teach your child important rules and roles of life, from being an empathetic human being to learning how to be responsible of one's actions. As your child grows up, they are going to face an onslaught of differing thoughts, opinions and values from their friends, the movies, internet, television and magazines. A mother will help guide their child to figure out their goals and values in life as well as teach them the importance of an education, manners and more. A mother will also discipline their child, a skill that will benefit children throughout their life as well as at school, work and life at home (Ref 3 and 4).

In this current era of cultural upheaval, I find myself drawing inspiration from the lives of women from the past who were unafraid to speak their mind. Too often, such women are silenced, forgotten, or pushed to the margins of history. But reclaiming their narratives allows us to see their capacity for meaningful change.

One woman who deserves more attention is the seventeenth-century Englishwoman, Elizabeth Joscelin. This “virtuous Gentlewoman of rare accomplishments” wrote a popular advice book entitled The Mothers Legacy to her Unborn Child (1624) that was frequently reprinted throughout the seventeenth century, but relatively few scholars engage with her work these days.

That’s a shame.

Her story reads like a Hallmark movie. Joscelin was probably born about 1595 and married her adored and adoring husband Tourell in 1616. Five years later, she was overjoyed to find herself pregnant with their first child. However, she could not shake the fear that she would die in childbirth. So she ordered a set of burial sheets (just in case) and locked herself away in her writing closet to jot down her thoughts on everything her unborn child must do to live a virtuous life.

an essay on the importance of mother

That particular summer of 1622 was a rainy one, so Jocelin had loads of time to write. Accordingly, her book goes into detail on a wide array of topics: the best time of day for prayer (mornings) or thoughtful discourse (noon), the importance of avoiding pride, the best way to celebrate the Sabbath, and general maxims for life.

Tragically, Joscelin’s sense of foreboding proved to be accurate, and she developed a fever after her daughter Theodora was born. Nine days after giving birth on October 12, 1622, Joscelin held her daughter, blessed her, and then breathed her last. She was twenty-seven years old.

Someone in the household—most likely her husband—discovered her manuscript, a “small treatise found in her desk unfinished.” The notebook was ultimately given to a close family friend, a clergyman from the Arminian movement of Protestantism named Thomas Goad who took on the task of editing Joscelin’s writings. Arminianism was a reaction to Calvinism that originated in the Netherlands in the early 1600s. The movement’s anti-Calvinist views and those on free will were controversial within the Church of England and were often censored until King James I’s death in 1625.

Goad was deeply impressed with Joscelin’s intelligence and her moral virtues, but that didn’t stop him from “fixing” her prose when he thought she was wrong—particularly when she started making particularly bold claims about the status of women within the church or the nature of religious authority. In fact, readers who picked up a copy of The Mothers Legacy to her Unborn Child were reading a book that sometimes took aim at the author’s own ideas.

In seventeenth-century England, the religious role of women was a point of intense debate, even as it is today throughout the world. Many devout women struggled to resolve the dilemma posed by clergymen, who praised the obedient subservience of the wife even as they lauded the spiritual leadership of the mother. A woman like Joscelin could get away with telling her child what to do, but calling herself equal to the men in the church? That was a step too far.

an essay on the importance of mother

So when Goad set about to prepare The Mothers Legacy for publication, he aimed to keep Joscelin in her place. For instance, in one passage describing the dangers of wearing “proud” fashions, Joscelin cautions her daughter: “oh the remembrance of misspent time; when thou shall grow in years and have attained no higher knowledge, then to dress thy selfe.” For Joscelin, thinking about fashion is a diversion from the more suitable goal of advanced learning. Goad, however, emends the passage to read “no other knowledge,” suggesting that “higher” knowledge should remain within the masculine sphere. A similar move happens later when Joscelin suggests that a woman’s virtue can easily correspond with her intellect: “if the time mends not before you come to understanding you will hear a well dressed woman … more commended than a wise or learned or religious woman.” To Joscelin, there is no reason why learning, wisdom and religion cannot coexist peacefully within the righteous woman. But Goad disagreed, rewriting the line to read “a wise or honest, or religious woman.” By choosing the “honest” woman over the “learned” woman, Goad seems to think that women’s learning is suspect. Goad also considered it important to defend religious leaders from critique, so when Joscelin noted that ministers sometimes make mistakes, he aimed to minimize the damage. Consider the moment when Joscelin urges her child to pay attention in church:

and though thou hearest a minister preach as thou thinkest weakly yet give him thine attention and spend not the time in reading or any other meditations, and thou shalt find that he will deliver something profitable to thy soul either that thou hast not heard before or not marked or forgotten.

Even as Joscelin urges her reader to listen to ministers, she acknowledges that they are not perfect and provides a list of alternative practices that dissenters might follow (i.e., reading and private meditation). But in Goad’s version the clergy are shielded from blame:

And though perhaps thou hearest a Minister preach, as thou thinkest, weakly, yet give him thine attention, and thou shalt find that he will deliver something profitable to thy soul, either that thou has not heard before, or not marked, or forgotten, or not well put in practice.

Goad cuts Joscelin’s list of alternate spiritual practices, a change that diminishes the influence of the laity and augments that of the minister. And while he keeps Joscelin’s acknowledgement that some ministers might preach “weakly,” he slips in the word “perhaps” to soften the blow. He also suggests that clerical shortcomings are not a failure of the clergy, but of the laity who did ”not well put in practice” the ministers’ sound guidance. All of this is a stark contrast to Joscelin’s suggestion that she may critique her minister when appropriate.

These are just a few representative examples of the quiet debate that took place between Joscelin’s text and Goad’s editing. Joscelin’s manuscript makes a case for an educated female laity that maintains the right to disagree with church authorities. Goad’s edited version presents the reader with a more muted female voice that praises women for their honesty and piety, but maintains a skeptical attitude toward their ability to have an impact on matters of religious importance.

If we overlook the ways that Goad altered the text, then we miss the partially buried remains of a fierce intellect and a strong will. By tracing the variations between Joscelin’s Legacy and Goad’s Legacy , we find the glimmer of an independent woman and a mother who remains lively long after death.

The Fundamental Importance of Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

This essay is about the three unalienable rights of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness which are foundational to democratic societies. It explains that the right to life ensures protection from harm and underpins health and safety laws. Liberty encompasses freedoms such as speech assembly and personal autonomy essential for democratic dialogue and individual choice. The pursuit of happiness allows individuals to seek personal fulfillment in their own ways promoting societal conditions that support personal growth and well-being. The essay highlights how these interconnected rights are crucial for individual dignity societal well-being and just governance emphasizing the need for their continuous protection and realization.

How it works

The idea of unalienable rights is super important in democracies—it’s all about the basic freedoms and values that hold societies together. Three rights stand out big time: life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These rights famously laid out in the Declaration of Independence in the United States aren’t just for one place or time—they’re seen as universal and core to fair and respectful governance.

First up is the right to life the most basic of all.

It says every person has the right to live and that laws and society should protect this right. This means making laws against stuff like murder and violence and standing up against things that threaten life like wars and capital punishment. Protecting life means making sure everyone can live safe and sound without fear of being hurt for no good reason.

Next there’s liberty—this means lots of freedoms that are vital for people’s dignity and independence. It covers things like freedom of speech assembly and religion. These freedoms let folks speak up follow their beliefs and live their lives without the government or others getting in the way. Liberty is crucial in a democracy because it allows people to speak out against unfairness share ideas and push for change. It’s about giving folks the power to make choices about their lives and futures.

Then there’s the pursuit of happiness which is a deep and special right. It says that while the government can’t make people happy everyone has the right to try. This means folks can chase after what makes them feel good—whether it’s through relationships careers or just doing what they enjoy. The pursuit of happiness means creating a society where everyone has the chance to grow and find joy. It calls for policies that give folks a fair shot at success and break down barriers that hold them back.

These three rights are all tied together. The right to life makes sure folks are safe enough to enjoy liberty and chase after happiness. Liberty lets people go after what makes them happy by giving them the freedom to make choices and speak their minds. And the pursuit of happiness is about everyone having the chance to find fulfillment and joy in their own way—it’s the goal of being able to live a good life.

Protecting these rights is crucial for making fair and caring societies. They give a moral and legal guide for how governments and groups should treat folks making sure everyone’s dignity and freedom are respected. In lots of democratic countries these rights are the heart of laws and freedoms that keep people safe from unfair treatment.

But making sure these rights are respected isn’t always easy. Societies need to work hard to balance folks’ freedoms with what’s good for everyone and to fight problems like unfairness prejudice and keeping folks safe.

In the end the unalienable rights of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness are super important for how humans live together and grow. They protect our dignity help us find our way and make sure governments treat us fairly and kindly. These rights show what’s most important about freedom and how folks should be treated. Keeping these rights strong means always respecting and caring about each person’s value and worth.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/entertainment/alice-munro-s-daughter-sees-outpouring-of-messages-after-essay-on-mother-s-silence-to-her-sexual-abuse-1.6955624 ( CTV Network ) — Warning: The following details may disturb some readers.

Social media saw a flood of messages for Andrea Robin Skinner, daughter of late Canadian author Alice Munro, after an eye-opening personal essay about her sexual abuse by her stepfather published this weekend.

In the essay, published in The Toronto Star on Sunday, Skinner detailed how the Nobel laureate remained in her marriage to husband Gerald Fremlin, even after learning of years of his abuse to Skinner, starting when she was nine years old. Skinner describes writing a letter to Munro detailing the abuse, but receiving no sympathy from her mother, who remained with Fremlin until his death, in 2013.

The information you need to know, sent directly to you: Download the CTV News App

“I … wanted this story, my story, to become part of the stories people tell about my mother,” Skinner wrote. “I never wanted to see another interview, biography or event that didn’t wrestle with the reality of what had happened to me, and with the fact that my mother, confronted with the truth of what had happened, chose to stay with, and protect, my abuser.”

Munro’s Books, founded by the prizewinning short story writer, expressed unequivocal support for Skinner, describing the revelations as “heartbreaking.”

“Along with so many readers and writers, we will need time to absorb this news and the impact it may have on the legacy of Alice Munro, whose work and ties to the store we have previously celebrated,” the statement said. “While the bookstore is inextricably linked with Jim and Alice Munro, we have independently owned since 2014. As such, we are not able to speak on behalf of the Munro family.”

The Victoria bookstore also shared a statement from Skinner’s siblings, Jenny and Sheila, and step-brother, Andrew.

“By acknowledging and honouring Andrea’s truth, and being very clear about their wish to end the legacy of silence, the current store owners have become part of our family’s healing, and are modelling a truly positive response to disclosures like Andrea’s,” the family statement reads.

As Skinner’s story came to light, several writers took to social media to discuss the essay and its impact on the literary world.

Highlighting the segment where Munro told Skinner she had been “told too late” of the abuse “and that “our misogynistic culture was to blame,” writer Beverly Gooden – who created the #WhyIStayed movement to portray the pitfalls of domestic violence – said it caused her to “gasp.”

“It’s not the patriarchy, it’s the you. Good grief,” Gooden wrote in a post on X.

Novelist Lydia Kiesling wrote on how the gravity of Skinner’s revelations impact Munro’s legacy.

“To raise kids & exist you kind of have to pretend the world is not a place where a woman renowned for her depictions of human life could feel sexually competitive with her own child who was assaulted by her husband at age 9 & choose him over her, but it is,” Kiesling wrote on X.

Munro often wrote about the emotional complexities of everyday people.

2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist Rebecca Makkai commented on the “seismic shift” in the collective understanding of the late writer and the difficulties in separating an artist from their work.

“And in a way I can’t explain, it feels like a violation, like we were all in an intimate relationship with work that had a horrid underbelly all along. I want to jump on the pile of her work and somehow magically save it all, assign it to some other writer. But we can’t do that,” Makkai wrote on X.

On the other hand, Joyce Carol Oates, the novelist behind “Black Water,” “What I Lived For” and “Blonde,” expressed her years-long admiration of Munro – sharing her thoughts on the essay despite not reading it.

“This article is behind a pay wall so I have not read it; & if I were to read it, I would probably have no comment. A longtime admirer of Alice Munro & would just want to say that, in her fiction, Munro may have confronted something like this dilemma: a ‘good’ woman seemingly oblivious of a common law husband sexually abusing a child,” the X post reads.

In a follow-up post Oates added it’s “sad” and “shameful,” positing Munro appears to have been “a person of her time & place.” The novelist points to Munro’s work as evidence of that.

“(… Munro) dramatized in her stories: provincial, small-town lives where being married, having a husband however despicable is somehow such a high value, a mother would betray her own daughter. entirely of another era, fortunately not our own except in some quarters in the US in which girls/children are routinely abused by men whom others shield & enable,” Oates wrote.

Many took to social media to applaud Skinner’s courage, including American novelist Brandon Taylor.

“I am so amazed by Andrea Skinner. The courage this took. The strength to actually sit down and write it out. The grace and compassion toward others as well as herself. I’m just grateful to her for this,” the post on X reads.

“Either there’s abuse and the person is a total monster who you could never love, or you love the person and so therefore there can’t really have been abuse,” Montreal-based writer Clementine Morrigan, who’s writing has explored issues of trauma, childhood sexual abuse and incest, told The Canadian Press.

“So what frustrates me so much in our response when we find out that someone who is an important figure or us … either perpetrated abuse or took part by inaction … we actually repeat this pattern.”

Skinner reported the abuse to police in 2005, resulting in Fremlin pleading guilty to a charge of indecent assault.

Alice Munro's daughter alleges she was abused by stepfather and her mom stayed with him

Alice Munro 's daughter is alleging she was sexually abused by her stepfather and that the Nobel Prize-winning author stood by him.

In an essay published Sunday in the Toronto Star , Andrea Robin Skinner, Munro's daughter from her first marriage to James Munro, said she was sexually assaulted by Gerald Fremlin, her stepfather and Munro's second husband, in 1976. She was 9 years old at the time.

In 2005, Fremlin received two years' probation after pleading guilty in Canadian court to assaulting Skinner.

The assault occurred when Skinner went to visit Munro for the summer at her home in Ontario. Fremlin also "made lewd jokes, exposed himself during car rides, told me about the little girls in the neighbourhood he liked, and described my mother's sexual needs," she wrote. Once, in front of Munro, he "told me that many cultures in the past weren't as 'prudish' as ours, and it used to be considered normal for children to learn about sex by engaging in sex with adults," Skinner alleged.

Years later, when she was 25, Skinner says she wrote a letter to her mother telling her about the sexual abuse, but Munro was "incredulous." According to the essay, Fremlin told Munro that he "would kill me if I ever went to the police." Despite what Skinner had told her, the short story writer remained married to Fremlin until his death in 2013.

Alice Munro, Nobel Prize-winning author and master of the short story, dies at 92

"She said that she had been 'told too late,' she loved him too much, and that our misogynistic culture was to blame if I expected her to deny her own needs, sacrifice for her children, and make up for the failings of men," Skinner wrote. "She was adamant that whatever had happened was between me and my stepfather. It had nothing to do with her."

Skinner also said Fremlin's former friends told her mother that he exposed himself to their 14-year-old daughter.

Skinner ended contact with her mother after telling her that Fremlin could never be around her own kids, and the two never reconciled their relationship.

Though she wrote that she was "satisfied" with Fremlin pleading guilty to indecent assault, Skinner also wanted her story to be told and for future interviews and biographies of Munro to wrestle with "the fact that my mother, confronted with the truth of what had happened, chose to stay with, and protect, my abuser."

But Skinner said this did not happen, and due to her mother's fame, "the silence continued."

Alice Munro wins Nobel Prize in literature

The essay comes after Munro, who in 2013 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, died in May at age 92 after suffering from dementia for over a decade.

"I want so much for my personal story to focus on patterns of silencing, the tendency to do that in families and societies," Skinner told the Toronto Star . "I just really hope that this story isn't about celebrities behaving badly … I hope that … even if someone goes to this story for the entertainment value, they come away with something that applies to their own family."

Weeks After Alice Munro’s Death, Daughter Tells of Dark Family Secret

Andrea Skinner said in The Toronto Star that her stepfather sexually abused her at age 9, and that her mother stayed with him after she learned of it.

Alice Munro looks at the camera with a half smile.

By Elizabeth A. Harris

Andrea Robin Skinner, a daughter of the Canadian Nobel laureate Alice Munro, said her stepfather sexually abused her as a child — and that her mother knew about it, and chose to stay with him anyway.

Skinner, who is now an adult, detailed these accusations in an essay in The Toronto Star on Sunday. According to a separate article in The Toronto Star, Skinner went to the Ontario police, and in 2005, her stepfather, Gerald Fremlin, was charged with indecent assault against her. He pleaded guilty.

By then, he was 80 years old. He got a suspended sentence and probation for two years. Munro stayed with him until he died in 2013.

Because of her mother’s fame, Skinner wrote, “the silence continued.” Munro died on May 13 at 92.

“What I wanted was some record of the truth, some public proof that I hadn’t deserved what had happened to me,” Skinner wrote of going to the police in 2005, about 30 years after the abuse began.

“I also wanted this story, my story, to become part of the stories people tell about my mother,” Skinner continued. “I never wanted to see another interview, biography or event that didn’t wrestle with the reality of what had happened to me, and with the fact that my mother, confronted with the truth of what had happened, chose to stay with, and protect, my abuser.”

Attempts to reach Skinner on Sunday were unsuccessful.

Skinner wrote that the abuse began in 1976, when she was 9 years old and went to visit Fremlin, then in his 50s, and her mother, who was in her 40s. She said he climbed into the bed where she was sleeping and sexually assaulted her. Skinner said she told her stepmother, who then told Skinner’s father. Her father did not confront Munro.

Essay on Influence Of Mother

Students are often asked to write an essay on Influence Of Mother in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Influence Of Mother

The role of a mother.

A mother’s role is like the roots of a tree, giving stability and nourishment. From birth, she is a child’s first teacher, showing how to speak, walk, and behave. Her love and care help the child feel safe and happy.

Teaching Values

Mothers teach important life values such as kindness, respect, and honesty. These lessons shape a child’s character. By watching their mothers, children learn how to treat others and make good choices.

Support and Encouragement

A mother supports her child’s dreams. She encourages them to try new things and is there to comfort them if they fail. Her belief in them helps them to succeed.

Setting Examples

Mothers set examples by their actions. If a mother works hard, is polite, and shows love to others, her children are likely to do the same. They imitate what they see at home.

Emotional Bond

250 words essay on influence of mother, the power of a mother’s love.

A mother’s love is like a strong foundation for a building. Just like a good base keeps a house steady, a mother’s love makes children feel safe and confident. From the moment a child is born, a mother’s affection helps shape their heart and mind.

Teaching and Learning

Mothers are our first teachers. They teach us to speak, eat, and understand right from wrong. They share stories and lessons that stay with us for life. Even when we grow up, the things our mothers taught us guide us like a compass.

Mothers show us how to act by setting examples. When a mother treats others with kindness, her children learn to be kind. If she works hard and faces problems with courage, her children see this and learn to do the same.

Emotional Support

When we feel sad or hurt, mothers are often the ones we turn to. They listen to our problems and make us feel better. A hug or kind words from a mother can chase away fears and dry tears.

Mothers Shape the Future

Mothers do not just influence their children; they shape the future. The lessons and love they give their children spread out into the world as their children grow and become part of society. In this way, mothers have a big impact on what the world will be like tomorrow.

500 Words Essay on Influence Of Mother

A mother plays a very important role in our lives. From the moment we are born, she is our first teacher, protector, and guide. She shows us love, teaches us right from wrong, and supports us in every step we take. The way a mother treats her child can shape the child’s future in many ways.

One of the first things a mother does is teach her child. She helps the child learn to talk, walk, and understand the world. A mother’s words and actions serve as lessons that the child carries for life. When a mother reads stories, sings songs, or even talks to her child, she is helping the child’s brain grow. This early education at home is just as important as what children learn in school.

Love and Emotional Support

Setting an example.

Children watch everything their mothers do. If a mother treats others with kindness, her child is likely to do the same. When a mother works hard, faces challenges bravely, and shows respect to others, she sets a good example for her child to follow. This is how children learn to be good people.

Health and Well-Being

A mother also has a big impact on her child’s health. She makes sure the child eats healthy food, stays clean, and gets enough sleep. These habits are important for a child’s physical health. A mother also helps with a child’s mental health by listening to the child’s worries and giving advice.

Discipline and Boundaries

Encouragement and belief.

Mothers often believe in their children even when the children do not believe in themselves. They encourage their children to try new things and to keep going even when it’s tough. This support can make a child feel brave enough to chase their dreams.

In conclusion, the influence of a mother is deep and lasting. She teaches, loves, sets an example, looks after health, sets rules, and encourages her child. These influences help shape who the child becomes. A mother’s role is not easy, but it is one of the most important in a child’s life. Every mother’s influence is unique, but all mothers share the job of helping their children grow up into happy, healthy, and good adults.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.
