MS Dhoni is a qualified paratrooper in the Indian army after he completed five parachute training jumps from Indian Army aircraft in the Agra training camp in 2019.
In 1995, he joined the Commando cricket club and stood behind the stumps for them for the next three years. He was then picked for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship in the 1997/98 season and performed well.
In 1998, Dhoni started to play for the Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) team. During his time at the CCL, Deval Sahay would gift him fifty rupees for every 6 that he scored in Sheesh Mahal tournament cricket games. Sahay then pushed for Dhoni’s selection in the Bihar team.
Dhoni was selected in 1998 by Deval Sahay to play for the Central CoalFields Limited (CCL) team. This was the first time that Dhoni stepped into professional cricket. Dhoni showed exceptional talent which impressed Deval Sahay who used his contacts in Bihar Cricket Association to push for his selection in the Bihar team.
Dhoni debuted for the senior Bihar Ranji Team for the 1999–2000 season. He was also included in the Bihar U-19 squad for the 1998–99 season where he scored 176 runs in 7 innings from 5 matches.
Dhoni however was not picked for the East Zone U-19 squad (CK Nayudu Trophy) or the Rest of India squad (MA Chidambaram Trophy and Vinoo Mankad Trophy). Dhoni made the first-class debut in Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar in the 1999–2000 season. He was just eighteen years old at that moment.
After playing Ranji Trophy for over three years, Dhoni was picked over international cricketer Deep Dasgupta to represent East Zone. It was then that Dhoni stepped into the limelight. Dhoni was scouted by BCCI’s small-town talent-spotting initiative TRDW and discovered by TRDO Prakash Poddar.
Dhoni was selected for India A squad for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya. His performances on that tour earned him the attention of the likes of Sourav Ganguly and Ravi Shastri.
The Chennai Super Kings contracted Dhoni’s services for US$1.5 million in IPL’s inaugural season in 2008. He was the most expensive player in the IPL for the first season auctions.
Dhoni captained Chennai Super Kings to victory in 2010 and 2011, 2018 and 2021 Indian Premier League titles, and the 2010 and 2014 Champions League T20 titles.
After the CSK was banned for two years, Dhoni was subsequently bought by Rising Pune Supergiant for US$1.9 Million in 2016. He was the captain that year but after his team finished in 7th place Steven Smith replaced him.
Dhoni arrived on the international stage when the Indian ODI team was struggling to find its Wicketkeeper-Batsman. We saw Rahul Dravid in the 2000s and then the arrival of wicket-keeper/batsman from the junior ranks such as Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik.
But they didn’t fit the team combination well. Then came Dhoni, who was picked for the ODI squad for the Bangladesh tour in 2004/05.
Dhoni had the most disastrous start to a career that anyone can ever ask for. Getting run out for a duck on debut is the last thing you want. But, despite ordinary performances in his inaugural series against the Bangladesh cricket team, Dhoni was selected for the series against Pakistan. ‘
Dhoni scored his first century in his fifth one-day international. He scored 148 in Visakhapatnam off only 123 deliveries. Thus began the Dhoni era.
His last ODI inning came against New Zealand in the 2019 WC Semifinal where he ended his ODI journey in the same way he started–with a runout. Although there were speculations that MSD would stage a comeback after the 2020 IPL, the unforeseeable circumstances due to COVID-19 ensured that MS Dhoni played his last international game without any farewell.
MS Dhoni has featured in four World Cups, 2 as a captain. Under his captaincy, India lifted the World Cup in 2011 and reached the semifinals in 2015.
Owing to good performances in the middle order as well as behind the stumps, MSD was selected for the World Cup in the Caribbean. India had a disappointing campaign as they lost two of the three group games against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Dhoni had horrible innings as he got out duck in both the games. The team, including Dhoni, was highly criticized for their performances. Around 200 fans attacked Dhoni’s under-construction home in Ranchi after the Bangladesh loss.
By the 2011 WC, Dhoni was the captain of all three Tests, T20I, and ODI’s. Dhoni’s major contribution with the bat came in the finals against Sri Lanka. Chasing 275 at the Wankhede, Dhoni promoted himself up the order after Sachin, Sehwag, and Virat Kohli lost their wickets early.
Dhoni and Gambir then built a steady partnership to stabilize the Indian innings. Dhoni had scored 60 from 60 balls, after which started accelerating. He scored the winning six of Numan Kulaeskara, a shot which no one will forget, and won the Man of the Match award.
Dhoni’s crucial decision to promote himself up the order to put off Muralitharan’s spin threat and right-hand-left-hand combo showed why he was one of India’s best captains.
Under Dhoni’s captaincy in the 2015 World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, the Men in Blue were able to reach the semi-finals with comfort, beating Bangladesh in the quarter-finals. However, they went on to lose to hosts Australia in the semi-finals at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
India had won 7 consecutive matches in this World Cup and won 11 straight games overall in World Cups. After beating Bangladesh, MSD became the first non-Australian captain to win 100 ODI matches, and the first Indian captain to hold the record.
He scored 237 runs in 6 matches with an average of 59.25. His 45* and 85* against West Indies and Zimbabwe helped India on the road to the semi-finals. He scored 65 against Australia in the semis but was not able to prevent the Aussies to run over India on their way to glory.
Dhoni played his last World Cup at the age of 38. This time around, he was India’s wicketkeeper leading into the tournament. Despite his handy knocks against South Africa, Australia, and West Indies, MSD was primarily criticized for his strike rate and ‘lack of intent’.
In the semis against New Zealand, Dhoni scored a fighting half-century and built a promising partnership with Ravinder Jadeja after the top-order fell. It looked like India were on their way to the final. But, Dhoni got runout at a crucial stage, breaking a billion dreams.
Dhoni’s performances in ODIs against Sri Lanka opened the doors for Test Cricket for him. Dhoni replaced Dinesh Karthik in December 2005 and was the last man standing in his 30-run journey in his debut test innings.
Dhoni went on to score his maiden half-century in the second Test. He was very aggressive with it too, as the half-century came off 51 balls. We witnessed Dhoni in making who was soon going to lead India to the number 1 spot in Tests.
MSD has been a part of the Indian T20 team from the start. He was one of the 11 players to play India’s first-ever T20 international match against South Africa in 2006. Despite his duck, a lucky India won the match. However, when they faced the Proteas in the 2007 ICC T20 Championships, Dhoni scored 45 as India won the match.
Since then Dhoni went on to lead the Indian team in the inaugural T20 championships and various T20 international victories. Apart from his role as a wicketkeeper-captain, he played an important role as a finisher for India in T20s.
Just before the inaugural T20 World Cup 2007, MS Dhoni was named to lead the team. India ended up lifting the trophy. Apart from his role as a captain, MSD played an essential role in the middle order as a finishing batsman. His innings in the semi-finals against Australia helped India to a 15-run victory and a place in the finals.
While he was unable to push India to a satisfying target. MSD’s captainship and cool-headedness in the final over led India to a victory against Pakistan in the final. Dhoni also played an important role in India’s run to the final of the 2014 T20 World Championships. He was declared in the Team of the tournament.

MSD has one double century which came in the first test against Australia at Chennai. He scored 224 runs as India posted 572 on the scoreboard. India won the match by 8 wickets. In the match, Mahi broke three records.
He posted the third-highest score by an Indian captain, the highest Test score by an Indian wicket-keeper, and the highest score by a wicket-keeper-captain.

He debuted as a Test player against Sri Lanka on 2nd December 2005, and led the team in Test cricket from 2008 to 2014. He is also one of the most successful Indian captains and holds a number of records for his captaincy. Notably, the Indian team became the No.1 Test team in 2009 under his captaincy. He also led the Indian team to win the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. - MS Dhoni led India to three ICC titles but he is nearly as famous for his exploits in the yellow of Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.
- Dhoni, known as CSK's "Thala" (leader), captained the franchise to ten finals in their first 14 IPL seasons and won them five titles - in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023 . He's led them to the playoffs in 12 editions, making them the most consistent team in the IPL. In a surprise move on the eve of the IPL 2024 season opener, Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain and was succeeded by Ruturaj Gaikwad.
- Dhoni was bought by CSK at the first IPL auction in 2008 and - barring a handful of games in 2022 - has been their captain ever since. No other player has led an IPL team for so long. Only when CSK was banned for two years on corruption charges - in 2016 and 2017 - did Dhoni play for another team in the IPL: Rising Pune Super Giant(s).
- Dhoni's most memorable season with the bat was 2018, when he scored 455 runs at an average of 75.83 and strike rate of 150.66 to lead CSK to the title in their comeback season following the ban.
- Dhoni was the first to play 250 matches in the IPL, reaching the milestone in 2023, four years after he played his last international game for India. He had resigned as CSK captain ahead of IPL 2022, but took back the captaincy after his successor Ravindra Jadeja stepped down mid-way through the season. He led the team to the title in 2023, before stepping down from captaincy again next year.
MS Dhoni probably ranks as the third-most popular Indian cricketer ever, behind only Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. He emerged from a cricketing backwater, the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, and made it to the top with a home-made batting and wicketkeeping technique, and a style of captaincy that scaled the highs and hit the lows of both conservatism and unorthodoxy.
Under Dhoni's leadership, India won the top prize in all formats: leading the Test rankings for 18 months starting December 2009, winning the 50-over World Cup in 2011, and the T20 world title on his captaincy debut in 2007.
He seemingly emerged fully formed at 23, when he blasted two centuries in a triangular 50-over tournament for India A in Nairobi. Long-haired and fearless, he soon swaggered into international cricket, and became an instant darling of the crowds with ODI innings of 148 and 183 not out within a year of his debut.
Dhoni improvised abd learned, but he didn't apologise for his batting style, which was not the most elegant. He became a multifaceted ODI batter, one who could accumulate, rebuild, and unleash big sixes, all seemingly at will.
Along the way he showed leadership skills, which were recognised when Rahul Dravid gave up the captaincy in 2007. A day before that announcement from Dravid, a young India side under Dhoni played the first game of the first T20 World Cup in South Africa, and went on to win the tournament. The ODI captaincy was a natural progression, and the Test role duly followed too.
Dhoni brought to the captaincy a thick skin and the relative indifference to results that an Indian captain needs to keep the job for long. Along with India's coach, Gary Kirsten, he put his senior performers in a comfortable place, and they repaid him by producing some of their best years in international cricket. Dhoni's sense of calm on the field mostly worked like a charm in the shorter formats, although he sometimes sat back for too long in Tests tactically. Still, India had some of their best years in Test cricket, in terms of tangible achievement, under him: in the 60 Tests he led in, they had a win-loss ratio of 1.5.
However, after the 50-over World Cup win in 2011, which Dhoni sealed with a timely 91 and a six off his patented helicopter shot, an ageing team lost eight straight Tests on the trot away from home and his captaincy came under immense pressure, which was then exacerbated by India's first home series loss in eight years, 2-1 to England in 2012-13. This brought about a new chapter in Dhoni's career, where he seemed more assertive as a captain, building a new team. He played his best Test innings on a turner to win India the Chennai Test in 2013 against Australia, and became the first captain to lead India to four wins in a Test series.
Away from home in the winter of 2013-14, India lost Test series in South Africa and New Zealand by 1-0 margins that did not reflect how close they came to winning both. The England tour of 2014 began promisingly, with a drawn first Test followed by a historic win at Lord's, but India crashed to earth immediately afterwards to lose the series 3-1. At Old Trafford and The Oval, with the batting crumbling around him, Dhoni played a couple of his bravest innings in Tests.
On the tour of Australia that followed, India competed ferociously, thanks to a young batting core led by Kohli, but it didn't quite show in their results. Dhoni announced after the third Test, in Melbourne, that he was retiring from the format. He ended his career in whites with a proud record for a wicketkeeper: 4876 runs at an average of just over 38, six hundreds, and just under 300 dismissals.
Dhoni continued to lead India in the shorter formats, and they got to the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup. A year later they won the Asia Cup T20 in Bangladesh but exited the home T20 World Cup in the semi-final, though Dhoni enjoyed a good tournament as a finisher, scoring 89 runs while only being dismissed once in five innings, and showing electric reflexes while keeping to the spinners. He eventually played on till the 2019 World Cup (but gave up the white-ball captaincy in January 2017).
India's defeat to New Zealand in the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup turned out to be Dhoni's final international, although that wasn't officially confirmed till more than a year later, when after Covid brought sport to a halt, he announced it on Instagram just as players' preparations for that year's delayed IPL began.
In that tournament, Dhoni has been the face of the Chennai Super Kings franchise, inspiring fierce cult fandom. When Super Kings were reinstated in 2018 after two seasons out serving a suspension, he was back at the helm, leading the team to a fairy-tale third title, and he almost repeated the feat in 2019, when CSK lost a thrilling final against Mumbai Indians by just one run. Dhoni led them to their third title win in 2021, and repeated the feat in 2023, making CSK the league's most successful franchise, alongside Mumbai.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni , commonly known as MS Dhoni, is a former cricketer who represented India on the international stage for around 15 years. On the domestic level, Dhoni played first-class cricket for Jharkhand.
Dhoni used to captain the Indian national team in limited-overs formats from 2007 to 2016 and in Test cricket from 2008 to 2014. He has led India to the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 victory , the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cup victories, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup victory , and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy victory. He is also the present captain of Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League .
Dhoni was a wicketkeeper-batter and batted in the middle order, predominantly playing the finisher’s role. Dhoni is one of the few cricketers with more than 10,000 runs in ODIs. Experts deem Dhoni to be one of the best "finishers" in limited-overs formats in World Cricket. Many also regarded him as one of the best wicket-keepers in modern limited-overs international cricket.

MS Dhoni has had one of the most decorated careers as a batter, wicketkeeper, and skipper. He is considered one of the greatest cricketers to have played the game and has been celebrated for his unorthodox style of play, winning mentality, and tactical prowess.
Dhoni was selected in 1998 by Deval Sahay to play for the Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) team. This was the first time that Dhoni stepped into professional cricket. Dhoni showed exceptional talent which impressed Deval Sahay who used his contacts in the Bihar Cricket Association to push for his selection in the Bihar team.
Dhoni debuted for the senior Bihar Ranji Team for the 1999–2000 season. He was also included in the Bihar U-19 squad for the 1998–99 season where he scored 176 runs in 7 innings from 5 matches. Dhoni however was not picked for the East Zone U-19 squad (CK Nayudu Trophy) or the Rest of India squad (MA Chidambaram Trophy and Vinoo Mankad Trophy ). Dhoni made a first-class debut in Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar in the 1999–2000 season. He was just eighteen years old at that moment.
After playing Ranji Trophy for over three years, Dhoni was picked over international cricketer Deep Dasgupta to represent East Zone. It was then that Dhoni stepped into the limelight. Dhoni was scouted by BCCI's small-town talent-spotting initiative TRDW and discovered by TRDO Prakash Poddar. Dhoni was selected for the India A squad for a tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya. His performances on that tour earned him the attention of the likes of Sourav Ganguly and Ravi Shastri .
Dhoni's services were contracted by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for USD 1.5 million in IPL's inaugural season in 2008. He was the most expensive player in the first season of the IPL . Dhoni has led CSK to five IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023), the joint-most titles as a skipper (along with Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma ) in the tournament’s history. He has also won the 2010 and 2014 Champions League T20 titles with CSK. Dhoni had an excellent run with CSK both as a batter and a skipper.
After CSK was banned for two years, Dhoni was subsequently bought by Rising Pune Supergiant for USD 1.9 Million in 2016. He was the captain that year but after his team finished in 7th place, he was replaced by Steven Smith .
Dhoni came back roaring with his troops in IPL 2018 and had a fairytale run, helping CSK lift their third IPL trophy. Dhoni’s CSK reached the final for a record eighth time in 2019 but was stopped by a resurgent Mumbai Indians side that won the final by a whisker.
Dhoni and his men had a forgettable season in 2020, with CSK missing out on a playoff spot for the first time since the IPL began. Dhoni assured fans that the team would come back stronger in the next season and he kept his word, as the Super Kings won IPL 2021, their fourth title. They defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.
Ahead of IPL 2022, Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja , but the move backfired as Dhoni had to take over the role from Jadeja, who succumbed to the pressures of captaincy and saw a dip in his form. CSK finished in the ninth position that season, their worst season in IPL history.
CSK roared back in 2023 to win an absolute thriller in the final against the then-defending champions Gujarat Titans off the last ball, thanks to Jadeja’s finish with the bat. Dhoni lifted Chennai’s fifth IPL trophy and became the skipper with the joint-most IPL titles (along with Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Sharma) in the tournament’s history.
Ahead of IPL 2024, Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad , who is leading the Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing IPL season.
MS Dhoni had a spectacular international career, scoring 17,226 runs in 538 matches. He won three ICC trophies as a skipper (ICC WT20 2007, ICC CWC 2011, and ICC Champions Trophy 2013). In addition, he affected 829 dismissals as a wicketkeeper. Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020.
MS Dhoni arrived on the international stage when the Indian ODI team was struggling to find its Wicketkeeper-Batsman. We saw Rahul Dravid in the 2000s and then the arrival of wicket-keeper/batsman from the junior ranks such as Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik . But they did not fit the team combination well. Then came in Dhoni, who was picked for the ODI squad for the Bangladesh tour in 2004/05.
Dhoni had the most disastrous start to a career that anyone can ever ask for. Getting run out for a duck on debut is the last thing you want. But, despite ordinary performances in his inaugural series against the Bangladesh cricket team , Dhoni was selected for the series against Pakistan . Dhoni scored his first century in his fifth one-day international. He scored 148 in Visakhapatnam off only 123 deliveries. Thus began the Dhoni era as he mastered the art of finishing in ODIs, averaging 50.57 in the format, with 10 centuries to his name. The Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter also owns the record for being the quickest to achieve the ICC No. 1 ranking in ODIs in terms of innings (38).
Dhoni’s highest point in his ODI career would be his match-winning unbeaten 91 off 79 balls against Sri Lanka in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 final, earning him the Player of the Match award. MS Dhoni won the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 with a young brigade, beating England in the final in their backyard, and led India to the semifinals in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in Australia.
His last ODI inning came against New Zealand in the 2019 WC Semifinal where he ended his ODI journey in the same way he started--with a runout. Although there were speculations that MSD would stage a comeback after the 2020 IPL, the unforeseeable circumstances due to COVID-19 ensured that MS Dhoni played his last international game without any farewell.
Dhoni's performances in ODIs against Sri Lanka opened the doors for Test Cricket for him. He scored a double century against Australia in Chennai in 2013 and is the first and only Indian wicketkeeper to score a double ton in Tests. Dhoni announced a shock retirement from Tests on December 30, 2014, amidst the Test series in Australia as Virat Kohli took over the reins.
Dhoni was selected for India's first-ever Twenty20 international match. The match was played against South Africa in December 2006. Although Dhoni was out for a duck, he contributed to India's victory with one catch and a runout. The very next year, MS Dhoni was chosen to lead a young Indian team , in the first-ever World T20 in 2007. On September 24, 2007, Dhoni became the second Indian captain to have won a World Cup in any format of cricket, after Kapil Dev . However, Dhoni went on to lead India in another five T20 World Cups, having reached the semi-final and final once each thereafter. Dhoni scored his maiden T20I fifty in a bilateral series against England in Bengaluru in 2017, and played his last T20I match against Australia in 2019.
MS Dhoni is India's only two-time World Cup-winning captain, achieving victory in different formats, and is considered one of the greatest skippers of all time. He led a young Indian team to the first-ever T20 World Cup victory in South Africa in 2007. Dhoni then led India to their second ODI World Cup victory in 2011. He was also awarded man of the match in the finals against Sri Lanka for his score of an unbeaten 91. The bat which was used by Dhoni in the final match was auctioned for a whopping ₹ 72 Lac. The entire sum of money went to Sakshi Rawat Foundation which was operated by Dhoni's wife Sakshi Rawat to help orphan children. Dhoni also led India to the 2013 Champions Trophy title in England, making him the only captain to win all major ICC titles.
Dhoni was born on 7 July 1981 in Ranchi, Bihar (now in Jharkhand). He was raised in a Hindu Rajput family. His parents belonged to the village of Lwali is in the Lamgara block of Almora District, Uttarakhand. Dhoni's father, Pan Singh worked in junior management positions in MECON.
Dhoni has a sister named Jayanti Gupta and a brother named Narendra Singh Dhoni. On July 4, 2010, Dhoni got married to his schoolmate from DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Sakshi Singh Rawat. The couple gave birth to a beautiful girl on 6 February 2015 and named her Ziva.
MS Dhoni is a qualified paratrooper in the Indian army after he completed five parachute training jumps from Indian Army aircraft in the Agra training camp in 2019.
As of 2024, MS Dhoni has an estimated net worth of INR 1050 crores or USD 127 million.
MS Dhoni owns a huge farmhouse in Ranchi where he lives with his family.
MS Dhoni has around 12 cars, including a Ferrari 599, Porsche 911, Audi, Mercedes, Mitsubishi Pajero, Range Rover Hummer H2, and Nissan Jonga.

MS Dhoni retires from all international cricket
The announcement on Saturday, 15 August, was in typical Dhoni style, understated and unexpected. "Thanks a lot for your support throughout. From 1929 hrs consider me as Retired", he said in a post on Instagram, which was accompanied by a slideshow of his career in images.
The BCCI later confirmed in a release that the former skipper was retiring from international cricket; he is expected to feature in the IPL.

Under Dhoni’s leadership, India won the inaugural edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007. In 2011, he ended a 28-year wait for India by lifting the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup trophy, becoming only the second Indian captain after Kapil Dev to do so. Two years later, he completed an unprecedented treble, captaining India to the 2013 Champions Trophy title in England.
Considered one of the greatest finishers in modern-day limited-overs cricket, and one of the sharpest cricketing minds, Dhoni appeared in 350 one-day internationals, including three for Asia XI, in 2007. Across a distinguished 16-year career, he scored 10,773 ODI runs at 50.57 with 10 centuries. He also featured in 98 T20Is, the most by any Indian, between 2006 and 2019, scoring 1617 runs at 37.60.
In January 2017, he quit captaincy from both ODIs and T20Is, even as he continued to be India's first-choice wicket-keeper in limited-overs cricket, right up until the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019, which turned out to be his fourth and final edition.
Even though purists may have frowned at his unorthodox batting technique, Dhoni was a vital force for India in the longest format for close to a decade, scoring 4876 runs at 38.09 in 90 Tests. His sudden retirement from Test cricket came in December 2014, during India's tour to Australia, but he remained a key figure in ODIs and T20Is for years to follow.
Born in Ranchi, Dhoni debuted for India in December 2004 during the ODI leg of their Bangladesh tour as a wicket-keeper batsman. In only his fifth ODI, he cracked his maiden ton, a blazing 148 against Pakistan at No.3, exhibiting a carefree, aggressive batting style, a feature that remained his trademark for the next 10 years.
ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, Final; Sri Lanka (274-6) v India (277-4). India won by 6 wickets
The very same year, his career-best unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka enhanced his big-hitting reputation, and continues to be the highest score by a wicket-keeper batsman in ODIs. By the turn of the decade, Dhoni added more layers to his game, developing into a middle-order orchestrator and spearheading chases to further enhance his ODI reputation. He joined the 10,000-run club in ODIs last year, one of only five Indians to do so.
Although his batting style mellowed towards the final stage of his career, Dhoni remained a dependable figure in India's fluctuating middle order. His last ODI turned out to be the 18-run World Cup semi-final loss to New Zealand, on 10 July, 2019.
Behind the wickets, Dhoni built a name as one of world cricket's swiftest stumpers; his keeping was highlighted by a safe catching style and lightning-quick reflexes. Statistically, he ended as the third-most successful international wicket-keeper ever (829 dismissals), and the only one to record over 100 ODI stumpings.
India beating Pakistan in final of WT20 Dhoni lifting trophy
As captain, he enjoyed success around the world, especially in limited-overs cricket. Under him, India reached No.1 in Tests in the ICC rankings in 2009, which coincided with his own run at the top of the ODI batting charts. With Dhoni at the helm, India also boasted a commendable home record, losing just one series in six years. One of his biggest highlights was whitewashing a visiting Australia 4-0 at home in 2013, a series that witnessed his career-best Test score of 224.
Away from home, he tasted mixed results; he led the Test team to series wins in New Zealand, West Indies and Bangladesh, but also endured whitewashes on tours of England and Australia.
In ODIs and T20Is, Dhoni’s unique captaincy style, marked by unconventional and instinctive tactics, became the cornerstone for India’s rise into a dominant white-ball force. Arguably, his most memorable ODI knock came in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka, when he promoted himself ahead of an in-form Yuvraj Singh, and steered India's chase with an unbeaten 91, capping off the game with a memorable six.
In all, he captained India in 200 ODIs, maintaining a win-percentage of 59.52. Apart from the three ICC titles, Dhoni's other notable wins included a historic ODI tri-series win on Australian soil in 2008, as well as the Asia Cup wins of 2010 and 2016.

Before marrying his schoolmate Sakshi Singh Rawat, MS Dhoni fell in love with Priyanka Jha, whom he met in his early 20s. At that time in the year 2002, Dhoni was trying his best to get selected in the Indian team. The same year, his girlfriend died in an accident. Dhoni also dated South Indian actress, Lakshmi Rai. Experts consider MSD as one of the best "finishers" in the limited-overs format in world cricket . Many consider him as one of the best wicket-keepers in modern limited-overs international cricket .
If you don't really have a dream, you can't really push yourself; you don't really know what the target is.
Dhoni was born in a Hindu Rajput family in Ranchi . His parents moved to Ranchi from Almora district, where his father Pan Singh Dhoni worked in a junior management position in MECON. Dhoni did his schooling from DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir and since childhood, he was interested in sports. Dhoni initially played badminton and football during his school days in which he excelled and was also selected at club and district level competitions in these sports. Dhoni was a goalkeeper of his school's football team, and due to his skilful goalkeeping technique, his football coach sent him in a local cricket club to play cricket . Dhoni, after passing his 10th standard, only focused on cricket. Because of his brilliant batting skills, he was given a job by South Eastern Railway in Midnapore (W) as a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) at Kharagpur railway station where he worked from 2001 to 2003.
Although Dhoni did not play that much cricket initially, he impressed everyone with his wicket-keeping skills and became a regular wicket-keeper of the Commando Cricket Club from 1995-1998. In 1998, Deval Sahay selected Dhoni to play for the Central Coal Fields Limited (CCL) team. However, MSD had played only school cricket and club cricket till 1998 and not professionally. During the cricket matches of the Sheesh Mahal Tournament , Deval Sahay used to give him 50 rupees for each six he hit. Dhoni got the chance to bat up in the order while playing for CCL which he had taken full advantage of and helped CCL to move into the A division with the help of his centuries.
Deval Sahay, impressed by Dhoni's hard-hitting shots and dedication to cricket , used his contacts in the Bihar Cricket Association to select Dhoni in the Bihar team. At that time, Deval Sahay was the Ranchi District Cricket President and former Vice President of Bihar Cricket Association. It was due to him that Dhoni got a chance to play in Ranchi team, Junior Bihar cricket team and finally in senior Bihar Ranji team in 1999-2000 season.
At the age of 18, Mahi made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar in the 1999–2000 season. In his debut match, Dhoni scored 68 * runs against Assam. During that entire Ranji season, Dhoni scored 283 runs in 5 matches. MSD scored his maiden first-class century against Bengal in the 2000-01 season. Playing in Ranji first with Bihar and later with Jharkhand, Dhoni made his mark with his superb performance and at the same time, he started gaining fame after performing well in the Deodhar Trophy.
Self-confidence has always been one of my good qualities. I am always very confident. It is in my nature to be confident, to be aggressive. And it applies in my batting as well as wicketkeeping.
In the final of the Duleep Trophy , Dhoni was selected over international cricketer Deep Dasgupta to represent East Zone where he scored a half-century in the second innings. Dhoni's talent was discovered by TRDW, a small town talent-search initiative by BCCI. TRDO Prakash Poddar discovered Dhoni's talent when he saw him playing for Jharkhand in a match in 2003 in Jamshedpur and sent a report to the National Cricket Academy . MSD was recognized for his efforts and selected for the 2003-04 season for India A squad in an ODI tour to Zimbabwe and Kenya, where he showed his best wicket-keeping attempt with 4 stumpings and 7 catches in the match against Zimbabwe. Later MSD was named for the tri-nation tournament involving Kenya, India A and Pakistan A where Dhoni smashed back-to-back centuries and concluded the series with 362 runs . Dhoni's performance in the series attracted the attention of others including Ravi Shastri and Indian captain Sourav Ganguly .
Dhoni landed on the international stage when the Indian ODI team was struggling to find a better wicketkeeper-batsman. We all saw the arrival of wicket-keeper batsmen like Parthiv Patel and Dinesh Karthik in the early 2000s. Then Dhoni made an entry, after which everything changed, and the history itself is a witness. Dhoni was selected for the ODI team for the tour of Bangladesh in 2004-05 . It was the most disastrous beginning of Dhoni's career that anyone could ever imagine as he got run out on a duck in his ODI debut . Despite an average series against Bangladesh, Dhoni was selected for the Pakistan ODI series . In the 2nd match of the series, Dhoni scored 148 runs in only 123 balls , which was his fifth ODI. After this, the Dhoni era began . His last ODI came against New Zealand in the 2019 WC semi-finals where he ended his ODI journey the same way he had started with a run-out . While there was speculation that Dhoni would return after the 2020 IPL , the unforeseen circumstances caused by COVID-19 ensured that MSD played his last international match without any farewell.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni - India's Captain Cool , first participated in the turbulent period of the 2007 World Cup , under the leadership of Rahul Dravid , where India was eliminated from the tournament in just three matches.
Mahi has served as the captain of India in two ODI World Cups . Under his leadership, India won the 2011 World Cup and entered the semi-finals in 2015 .
However, after the coaching staff was renewed in 2011 and Dhoni was promoted to the Captain of the Indian team , India found a new leader and entered the home World Cup as a favourite in 2011. Dhoni had undoubtedly proved his spirit as a captain when India stumbled on the league stage in 2011 when the team faced a tie against England and a last-over defeat to South Africa. But everything changed in the knockouts as India kicked out Australia in the quarterfinals, smashed the arch-rivals Pakistan in the semi-finals and landed in the world cup finals against Sri Lanka . After chasing 275 in the final against Sri Lanka, Dhoni promoted himself in the batting order, ahead of the in-form batsman, Yuvraj Singh . When Dhoni came to bat, India needed more than six runs per over with three top-order batsmen already out. He has begun to build a fighting partnership with Gautam Gambhir . They maintained the required run rate with the help of good strokeplay and active running between the wickets. Dhoni was on 60 runs in 60 balls , but later he accelerated his frequency of the boundaries and finished with 91 not out from 79 balls . Dhoni finished the match in style with a huge six over long-on off Nuwan Kulasekara and claimed the Man of the Match award.
At the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand , Dhoni was named captain of the 30-man squad in December 2014 by the BCCI. Under his captaincy, India succeeded in defeating Bangladesh in the quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals easily. However, India went on to face Australia in semis where India got a 95-run defeat at the Sydney Cricket Ground . However, India had won 7 consecutive matches in 2015 World Cup and won 11 consecutive matches overall in World Cups. With the victory over Bangladesh, MSD became the first non-Australian captain to win 100 ODIs , and the first Indian captain to achieve this milestone. Dhoni is also the 3rd captain to win 100 matches after two Australian captains - Ricky Ponting and Allan Border .
After handing over the captaincy to Virat Kohli in late 2016, Dhoni participated in the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales but continued to form the cognitive core of the team's brain, as well as the backbone of the batting line-up. Dhoni played some handy knocks in tournaments against Australia, South Africa and West Indies, but was criticized for his strike rate in the matches against Afghanistan and England. In the semi-final against New Zealand, Dhoni was the only man to battle along with Ravindra Jadeja , but the finisher was unable to chase. Dhoni scored a brilliant half-century, but unfortunately got run out at a critical stage. After his run out, India got eliminated from the World Cup. The 2019 World Cup was considered to be Dhoni's last world cup tournament which did not really go according to the plan.
If you keep winning, you don't know the areas you've to work hard.
Dhoni's spectacular performances in ODIs against Sri Lanka allowed him to play in the Indian Test team. In December 2005 , Dhoni was selected as the Indian teams' Test wicket-keeper replacing Dinesh Karthik . MSD scored 30 runs in his test debut and smashed his maiden half-century in the second Test which helped India set a target of 436 against Sri Lanka. His maiden Test century came in the second test of India's tour of Pakistan in 2006. He had a mind-blowing test career in these years where he proved his mettle in Test cricket also. In 2009 , Dhoni led the Indian team as a captain against Sri Lanka, scored two centuries in the three test match series and gained a 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka. With this milestone, India topped the charts and got the number one spot in Test cricket for the first time in history. However, in the 2014–15 tour of Australia, Dhoni played his last test series as a captain, and after the third test, MSD announced his retirement from the Test format.
Dhoni made his international T20 debut against South Africa in December 2006 . However, MSD was out for a duck but contributed to India's victory with one catch and a run-out. In 2007, Dhoni was selected as a captain to lead young Indian team for the first-ever 2007 World T20 . In 2012, India registered their first win against Australia with the help of MSD's superior 44 runs knock. In the final over of Clint McKay, Dhoni smashed a monstrous six of 112 meters .
MS Dhoni was selected to lead India in the first-ever World T20 in South Africa and made his captaincy debut against Scotland. However, that match was washed out, but MSD led the Indian team to the ICC World Twenty20 finals and registered a win over arch-rivals Pakistan on 24 September 2007, becoming the second Indian captain to win a World Cup in any form of cricket , after Kapil Dev .
MSD was signed by Chennai Super Kings for 1.5 million USD, becoming the most expensive player in the IPL 's first season’s auctions. Chennai Super Kings claimed 2010 , 2011 and 2018 Indian Premier League titles as well as 2010 and 2014 Champions League T20 titles under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. After CSK's suspension for two years, Dhoni was acquired by defunct Rising Pune Supergiants for 1.9 million USD in 2016 and was appointed as a captain. However, his team finished 7th in the 2016 IPL season. In the following IPL season, his team again roared back and made into the finals of 2017 IPL season, but lost to Mumbai Indians. In 2018, CSK returned after the two-year suspension and Dhoni was again named as the captain of CSK. That 2018 IPL season was totally in Dhoni's side as he scored 455 runs in the tournament and led his team to claim their third IPL title. MSD again captained CSK in the 2019 IPL season, which emerged as one of the strongest teams of the season. The IPL season of 2020 was not favourable to him, as his team CSK finished 7th.
Gut feeling is all about the experiences that you have had in your life. It is about being in difficult scenarios, knowing what worked, what did not work, and then taking a decision.
On August 15, 2020 , Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on India's 74th Independence Day . He posted a video on Instagram featuring pictures of both the best and worst moments of his overall career, with the song "Mai Pal do Pal ka Shayar Hoon" in the background music. The video was captioned, "Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired" .
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has scored 10,773 ODI runs at an average of 50.53 in 350 matches. MSD has 10 centuries and 73 half-centuries under his ODI belt with a strike rate of 87.56.
