It’s called the “one-idea rule” — and any level of writer can use it.

The “one idea” rule is a simple concept that can help you sharpen your writing, persuade others by presenting your argument in a clear, concise, and engaging way. What exactly does the rule say?

  • Every component of a successful piece of writing should express only one idea.
  • In persuasive writing, your “one idea” is often the argument or belief you are presenting to the reader. Once you identify what that argument is, the “one-idea rule” can help you develop, revise, and connect the various components of your writing.
  • For instance, let’s say you’re writing an essay. There are three components you will be working with throughout your piece: the title, the paragraphs, and the sentences.
  • Each of these parts should be dedicated to just one idea. The ideas are not identical, of course, but they’re all related. If done correctly, the smaller ideas (in sentences) all build (in paragraphs) to support the main point (suggested in the title).

Most advice about writing looks like a long laundry list of “do’s and don’ts.” These lists can be helpful from time to time, but they’re hard to remember … and, therefore, hard to depend on when you’re having trouble putting your thoughts to paper. During my time in academia, teaching composition at the undergraduate and graduate levels, I saw many people struggle with this.

How to Write a Good Article: 7 Tips

Want to learn how to write a good article? Craft attention-grabbing titles? Pull readers in and keep their focus?

Knowing how to say something is as important as knowing what to say. The following seven tips will help you create articles that engage readers from beginning to end.

1. Create a catchy title.

A title is the first thing your reader will see, and it's the first chance you have to convince them to continue reading your article. You don't need to resort to clickbait-style titles to get readers interested. There are many different strategies for formulating good titles . Here are a few suggestions to help you formulate one that is perfectly eye-catching:

  • Promise a solution. What problem are you going to solve for the reader? Draw them in with a promise of answers. For example, start out with phrases like "how to" and "tips for."
  • Be succinct. Blog posts with 6- to 13-word titles get the most traffic , so make sure your titles aren't too wordy.
  • Ask a question. Write your title in the form of a question to which you know the answer will be "yes."

2. Start strong—write a strong hook.

You only have, at most, a few sentences to draw a reader in. Let your reader know that this is going to be an article worth taking the time to finish. The first sentence is the most important of the entire article and should be carefully crafted. You want to hook your reader in and not let go from that point forward. Here are a few tips:

  • Pose a question. What's the driving question behind your article? Start there and make your reader want to stay for the answer.
  • Present a surprising fact. Right out of the gate, the reader knows they will learn something new in this article.
  • Start with a controversial statement. Get the reader invested immediately.

3. Write succinctly.

Keep your sentences and paragraphs short. Long, dense paragraphs can be intimidating. You don't want your reader to open the link, see a block of text and think. “I don't have time for this.” Shorter sentences pull the reader along and encourage a quick reading pace. Here are some suggestions for how to trim your sentences:

  • Avoid excessive words. You're a writer. You like to write. But don't get too caught up in creating flowery prose. Make sure that your writing isn't getting in the way of the information you are conveying.
  • Check your adverbs. If you find adverbs paired with weaker words, use a stronger word to convey the same meaning instead. Is something “very important” or “critical”? Cutting out adverbs not only saves you a few words, but it also makes your writing stronger.
  • Watch redundancy. Adverbs are often at fault here too. Something is just “harmless,” not “completely harmless”. Something is “blank,” not “totally blank”.

<div class="tip">What about the length of an article itself? It's a common question, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Follow these guidelines about how long a blog post should be.</div>

4. Edit your work. And then edit again.

In other words, don't be afraid to edit. It's common to feel that every word you write is crucial, and it can be painful to cut things out. However, editing is just as important—if not more important—than the actual writing.

When you've finished your first draft, go back over it with a critical eye, deleting anything unnecessary or repetitive. If a sentence doesn't function to strengthen your argument, give it the ax! After this initial and brutal editing phase, read over your piece again to ensure that every sentence feeds naturally into the next.

5. Pay attention to visuals.

It would be nice to think that only the quality of your writing matters, but the truth is looks matter too. Learning a few tricks allows you to use this to your advantage.

Variation in sentence length, paragraph length, text size, and text type breaks up the visual landscape in an appealing way. This variation also serves to guide the reader to the most important parts of your article.

Images can also serve to break up the text, and they are another way to draw in the reader. A catchy title draws clicks, but an enticing image piques readers' interest enough to continue reading. Remember, it's important to consider which images will work best for your article and how to access them.

  • Keep paragraphs short and visually appealing.
  • Use bullet points to break up blocks of text. Since 43% of readers skim blog articles , it's important to highlight your main points.
  • Bolding is another way to break up your text, directing the skimmer's eyes to those ideas that you want to stand out.
  • Use images to break up the text and draw in readers.

6. Use the appropriate format.

Not all articles are created the same. It's important to be aware of different types and to consider which format is the best fit for what you're writing. Will your topic work best as a numbered listicle ? Keep in mind that titles with numbers generate the most clicks.

Formatting your article as a how-to is also a good way to generate clicks . Consider your topic and what will work best in terms of the presentation of ideas.

7. Use keywords strategically.

Keywords are an important part of search engine optimization (SEO). However, keep in mind that Google penalizes sites for keyword stuffing . We are still aiming for quality content and the appropriate use of keywords. Include the primary keyword in the title of your blog post. Secondary keywords should be featured in the subheadings and the body of the text.

Last Thoughts

There are two additional tips that will drastically affect how you write an article: practice and read. The more you practice writing, the better you will get. Actively practice implementing these tips in your writing. Then when you read other articles, engage with them as a writer. Were you drawn in by the opening? Is the layout visually appealing? How to Write an Article in 10 Steps

Content marketing is a significant area of marketing, including video creation, email newsletters, social media posts, blog posts, and more. 

Content marketing focuses on providing value to the reader with high-quality content that solves pain points and answers questions without being overly promotional. 

Carefully crafted articles and blog posts can help build trust with your existing and potential customers.

They can also help you rank higher in search engines so your target audience can find you, generating more leads and conversions. 

Ready to get started? 

Follow these 10 article-writing steps to create high-quality content for your audience. 

1. Identify Your Target Audience’s Pain Points

The golden rule of content marketing is to write for your audience, not just for search engines.

Writing for your audience means creating content that meets their needs, interests, and challenges. Relevant and valuable articles keep readers engaged and, hopefully, coming back for more.

One of the best ways to speak to your readers is to find out what they need help with. In other words, identify your target audience’s pain points, challenges, and needs.

In fact, our State of Content Marketing: 2023 Global Report found that audience research is the most critical factor for content marketing success.

What factors lead to success in content marketing

When you know your audience’s pain points, you can tailor your content to address their needs directly. 

How do you identify your audience’s pain points?

Conduct surveys, run focus groups, and hold interviews to collect qualitative data. Listen to how they use your product, what led them to use it, and what it helps them achieve.

You can also conduct audience research through forums, social media groups, and online communities where your target audience spends time. Pay attention to the questions they ask and the problems they discuss. This real-time interaction can reveal common pain points.

It’s a good idea to document your findings in a buyer persona template. You can organize insights, paint a comprehensive picture of your potential customer, and share it across teams.

Let’s say you sell a B2B sales tool. Checking forums such as Quora and Reddit gives you insights into the questions, concerns, and discussions around this topic.

For instance, here are some questions people have asked on Quora related to B2B sales, including “How does one close B2B sales lead opportunities?” and “Can B2B sales ever be 100% automated?”:

You can use these questions in several ways: 

  • Identify pain points, motivations, and factors that influence buying decisions to create accurate buyer personas
  • Brainstorm topic ideas for content
  • Write articles that meet your target audience’s specific needs and interests

For example, sales CRM software company Close answered a common B2B question in their article below:

Not only did Close directly address this question with comprehensive, educational content, but it also helped establish the brand as an authority in the B2B sales space.

2. Determine Your Target Keywords

Combining audience needs with the right keywords will help your target audience find your content.

Keywords are words or phrases users type into search engines to get information or explore products. For example, “best smartphones,” “how to bake a chocolate cake,” and “digital marketing tips.” 

Adding a relevant target keyword to your article tells search engines your article contains information about this query.

If it meets other standards, like being engaging enough to keep readers on the page, it increases your chances of search engines showing your article the next time someone searches for that keyword or a variation of it. 

In the past, marketers tried to trick search engines by adding excessive keywords to content, hoping it would make their pages appear higher in search results.

This strategy created poor-quality content that frustrated users.

Not anymore.

Today, Google is smarter. It identifies (and penalizes) this practice.

To evaluate the quality of content , Google considers how long people stay on a webpage and whether they click on links. If your content keeps people engaged, it signals to search engines that your content is valuable, and they may rank your website higher as a result.

Now, how do you find the right keywords?

Use a keyword research tool like the Keyword Magic Tool to find keywords and phrases relevant to your topic and niche.

Navigate to Semrush and open the Keyword Magic Tool. Next, enter the seed (or broad) keyword and hit “ Search ”:

The tool will present a range of keywords, phrases, and questions based on the keyword you entered:

In the example above, the Keyword Magic Tool returned over 17,000 keywords. 

Narrow it down by considering two key metrics:

  • Search volume: How popular is the keyword? The higher the monthly search volume (measured over a 12-month period), the higher your potential traffic could be if your article ranks well.
  • Keyword difficulty (KD): How difficult is it to rank for your chosen keyword? The greater the keyword difficulty, the harder it is to rank for the keyword.

Both of these metrics can be found in the Keyword Magic tool:

You can also target long-tail keywords , which are specific search queries with relatively low search volumes. These queries are often made up of several words like “what is employee engagement?”

In fact, a Backlinko study showed that keywords containing 10 to 15 words get almost twice as many clicks (1.76 times) than single-word terms.

What makes long-tail keywords better?

  • They tend to be less competitive than short-tail keywords. This makes them easier to rank for in search engines. 
  • As they’re more specific, people searching for these keywords generally have a clearer idea of what they’re looking for and are closer to taking action. This can result in higher-quality traffic, leading to more conversions.

Here’s a long-tail keyword example: Longer keywords usually have fewer searches—and it’s easier to rank for them. (Hover over the color-coded circle in the Keyword Magic Tool for an explanation of the difficulty score.)

Once you’ve researched keywords and matched them to your audience research, save the relevant terms in a keyword list.

To do this, select the chosen keywords and click “ Add to keyword list .” Give your list a name and continue to save terms as you do more research.

This way, you’ll have your keyword research all in one place, so you can have them handy when creating content. 

3. Conduct Topic Research 

A critical part of learning how to write an article is topic research. 

Google and readers value well-researched articles.

Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines consider E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) when evaluating the quality of a page.

What E-E-A-T stands for

This is where research comes into play.

Thorough research on your topic helps you dig deeper, uncover valuable insights, and provide your audience with accurate and reliable information.

Here are some ways to build expertise and authority in your articles:

  • Choose reliable sources: Select authoritative and reputable sources for your research. This could include academic journals, industry publications, or government reports.
  • Dive deep: Get into the finer details of your topic. Explore different angles and viewpoints. The more comprehensive your understanding, the more valuable your article will be.
  • Fact-check: Verify the accuracy of the information you gather. Cross-reference data from multiple sources to ensure its reliability. Avoid using unverified or outdated information.
  • Attribute properly: Give credit to the sources you use in your article. Proper attribution adds credibility and transparency.
  • Include quotes and interviews: Conduct interviews with subject matter experts to gain unique insights and firsthand knowledge.

The article includes links to research reports and studies from reputable sources. The information is backed by data, enhancing its reliability and trust.

Implementing these tips in your article writing will help readers and search engines view your content as authoritative, accurate, and reliable. 

4. Create an Outline

Creating an outline is an extra step. But it’s an important one.

Because it organizes your thoughts, dictates a cohesive flow, and ensures you don’t miss any crucial points.

Another benefit of outlining is that it makes the writing process more efficient.

You already have a clear plan, so you can focus on expanding on each point rather than wondering what to write next. This can save you a significant amount of time and effort.

Here’s how to create an article outline: 

First, identify the key sections you want to include in your article. Under each main point, jot down the sub-points or details you want to cover.

It’s also a good idea to review the search intent behind the keywords you chose.

Search intent is the reason a user types a query into a search engine. Their search intent will influence the type of content they’re looking for.

There are four types of search intent:

  • Navigational: When a user searches for a particular website or page
  • Informational: When a user searches for information 
  • Commercial: When a user conducts research before making a purchase
  • Transactional: When a user searches for a particular brand or product with intent to buy

The keyword you choose—and the search intent behind it—will inform the type of content you create.

Because when someone searches and finds your content matches their intent, they’re more likely to stay on your site longer.

Plus, when Google’s algorithm recognizes your content is a perfect match for what a user searches for, your chances of ranking higher in the search results increase.

You can determine search intent in Keyword Overview .

Enter your keyword and click “ Search .” Look for a box titled “ Intent ” in the “Overview” tab.

Here, we see the intent for “budget laptops.” The intent is labeled as “Commercial.”

In other words, when people search for “budget laptops,” they want to research options. They’re less likely to be searching for a how-to article or a news article with the latest industry insights. 

So, you should construct your article outline to compare various budget laptops based on performance, price, and customer reviews. 

This approach will help consumers make a well-informed decision when choosing a budget laptop that suits their needs.

For example, this article by PCMag ranks highly for “budget laptops” and has a clear outline that matches commercial search intent.

The start of the article provides a broad overview of the best budget laptops.

This aligns with the initial intent of users who search for general information about budget laptops. They want to see a list of options and get a sense of what’s available.

Then, it talks about each laptop in detail. This helps people who want more than just options—they want to know more to make a smart choice.

The article helps people conduct thorough research with explanations on why they picked each laptop, who it’s good for, and the pros and cons of each.

High-quality articles that satisfy search intent start with a strong outline. 

To help you gather helpful information for your outline, use the SEO Content Template . With this tool, you’ll get SEO-friendly content recommendations, like keyword and length suggestions, to help guide your outline.

5. Write a Compelling Headline

Your article headline is the first thing people see. If it’s not intriguing, they might not click it.

A good headline can significantly influence user behavior and drive traffic to the article. When your headline is compelling, you have a better chance of capturing the audience’s attention.

Here are some tactics for writing headlines that attract clicks:

Include the Target Keyword

Adding the target keyword in the headline tells search engines what your article is about, which can help improve your search engine ranking.

Plus, it informs readers that your article is relevant to their search query.

Here’s an example of a top-ranking article for the keyword “affiliate marketing”:

Ensure the Headline Matches the Search Intent

Understanding search intent—which we discussed above—is crucial for writing effective headlines.

Your headline should align with the primary intent behind the keyword you target. This helps encourage clicks. 

Let’s take the keyword “best video maker online” for example, which has a commercial search intent:

Commercial intent means anyone searching for this term likely wants to buy an online video maker.

The SERPs also reveal that when someone searches for the “best video maker online,” they want recommendations of online video maker tools.

See how the headline perfectly matches the search intent? This is because the headline promises a curated list of online video makers.

Add Power Words and Numbers

Power words grab readers’ attention and evoke curiosity or urgency. They make readers feel an emotion––which is a powerful way to draw readers in and encourage them to click on your article.

Take this article headline, for instance:

The power word here is “boost.” It suggests improvement and growth, which can appeal to readers interested in advancing their careers.

Other power word examples include:

  • Extraordinary

You can also add numbers to article headlines for specificity and to clearly convey the article’s contents.

Here’s an example of an article headline that includes a number:

The number shows that the article offers a specific list of ideas, which can appeal to readers seeking internal communication ideas.

6. Draft a Strong Introduction

Learning how to create an article that hooks the reader starts with creating a strong, concise introduction. 

The introduction is your chance to grab the reader’s attention, establish relevance, and communicate the value they’ll get from reading further.

Start your introduction with a powerful hook––something that piques your audience’s curiosity and encourages them to continue reading. This could be a relatable anecdote, shocking revelation, thought-provoking question, or bold assertion.

The key to a successful hook is relevance. Tie the hook to your article’s subject matter to set the stage for what’s to come.

Here’s an example of a good hook in technology company Drift’s article :

The opening line reads, “Inflation, talent shortages, supply constraints—manufacturers don’t have it easy in 2023.”

Here’s why this hook works:

This hook effectively draws readers in by addressing current challenges in a relatable way and hinting at the valuable information they can expect to find in the article.

Once you’ve got the reader’s attention with an engaging hook, offer a glimpse of what readers can expect to gain from your article. Provide a clear benefit or promise that encourages them to keep reading.

Here are two frameworks you can use for drafting the introduction:

PAS (Problem-Agitate-Solution)

  • Problem: Present a relatable problem or pain point. This will capture the attention of your target audience and highlight the issue you’ll address.
  • Agitate: Elaborate on the problem, making it relatable and giving them a reason why they should solve it right away. Describe the implications and potential consequences.
  • Solution: Finally, introduce your article as the solution to this problem. Highlight the benefit readers will gain if they continue to read.

SCQA (Situation-Complication-Question-Answer)

  • Situation: Describe the current situation or context related to your topic
  • Complication: Introduce a complication or challenge within this situation
  • Question: Pose a question that reflects the reader’s curiosity or problem
  • Answer: Conclude the introduction by suggesting that the article will provide answers and solutions

When You Should Skip the Intro

Introductions are an important part of articles. But there are situations where you can consider skipping them.

Let’s say you’re writing on a topic that demands a clear answer or definition. These are often “what is” queries. 

If a reader is searching for a “what is” query, they’re looking for a fast, accurate answer. 

In such cases, it’s better to give readers what they want right away without adding an introduction that obstructs the answer. This respects their time and gets to the point faster.

Here’s an example of a Semrush article where we jump straight into the core subject matter:

Since readers clicking on this article from search engines are looking for specific answers, we decided to skip the traditional introductory paragraph. 

7. Use Descriptive Subheadings to Organize Content

Organizing your article with descriptive subheadings helps readers navigate content, find what they need, and stay engaged.

The Semrush State of Content Marketing: 2023 Global Report shows that high-performing articles have a variety of subheadings. This includes H2s and H3s, and if needed, H4s.

People read in different ways online. Some read every word, and some just want to find information quickly. Descriptive subheads can appeal to both. 

Make sure your subheadings clearly convey what each section is about. This helps readers find the answers they need and encourages them to keep reading. 

Remember: Using descriptive subheadings makes it easier for both people and search engines to understand your content.

If you have multiple levels of subheadings, use a standard heading hierarchy to visually organize your content.

Each level of heading represents a different level of importance, guides readers down the page, and improves the readability of your content.

Here’s how it works:

  • Heading 1: The H1 tag is typically reserved for the main title of your article. It’s the most important heading. It should provide a clear overview of the content and contain the target keyword. In terms of hierarchy, it’s at the top. Usually, each page only has one H1 tag.
  • Heading 2: H2 headings divide your content into main sections or topics. These headings give readers an idea of the major points you’ll cover. Use these as the skeleton for the outline and to convey search intent. They’re the next level down in the hierarchy.
  • Heading 3: H3 headings are subheadings that break down the main sections into smaller subsections. They provide more specific information to back up the H2 heading and create a logical flow.

You can further subdivide content using H4, H5, and H6 tags, although these are less commonly used.

8. Summarize Key Points and Include a CTA in the Conclusion

The conclusion is where you tie everything together and emphasize the main takeaways from your article. This way, you reinforce your message and make sure your readers remember the most important information.

Consider including a call to action (CTA) in the conclusion, as it guides people on what to do next.

Whether it’s subscribing to your newsletter, exploring related articles, or taking a specific action, an actionable CTA can boost engagement and further your content marketing goals.

Some CTA examples:

  • Subscribe now

At the end of your article, either before the conclusion, after it, or even in place of it, you may choose to have an FAQs section. While FAQs aren’t needed for every article or blog post, they can add depth and value to some topics. 

Your FAQ section should have its own subheading (an H2 or H3, depending on your preference) of “FAQs” or “Frequently Asked Questions.”

Then, briefly touch upon two or three of these common questions as FAQs and provide concise answers or insights. This shows that you understand your readers’ concerns and are eager to help.

For instance, here’s the “People also ask” section that shows up when searching “real estate social media content” on Google:

9. Add Visuals

Learning how to write an article that keeps readers engaged means focusing on more than just the words you use—it means high-quality visuals, too.

We walk you through how to brainstorm a topic, interview an expert and write your own original “How to ….”

“If you want to know how to do something, don’t just search the internet,” advises Malia Wollan , the longtime writer of Tip , a how-to column that ran weekly in The New York Times Magazine for seven years. “Instead, find a person who already knows how and ask them.”

That’s the challenge we are posing to students in “How to … ,” our new informational writing contest for teenagers : Interview an expert about (almost) any skill and then write an engaging and informative essay explaining it to readers.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to do that, with advice from the how-to expert herself, Ms. Wollan. You’ll start by getting familiar with the Tip format. Then you’ll brainstorm a topic for your own piece, find and interview an expert and, finally, put it all together.

When you’re ready, you can submit your completed how-to essay to our contest , which is accepting submissions through Feb. 14.

What does a how-to essay look like? There are, of course, many ways to write one. But since the inspiration for our contest comes from the Tip column in The Times, spending some time examining how it works is the logical first step in constructing your own.

Maybe you’re interested in learning a physical skill, such as how to build a sand castle , skip a stone , do the splits , tackle someone , spot a shooting star , crack a safe or find a four-leaf clover .

Or maybe you would rather up your emotional intelligence by, say, learning how to laugh at yourself , let your mind wander , recover from being ghosted , build an intentional community , be less fearful of the dark or forgive .

Perhaps you want to know how to do something practical, like break in boots , fix a brake light , mend a pair of jeans , use emojis , put out a grease fire , read faster , survive an avalanche , ask for an extension or find a lost hamster .

Or maybe you’d rather choose something offbeat, like how to start a family band , talk to dogs , communicate through facial expressions , make a love potion , build a fort , enjoy snowflakes , wash your hair in space or race pigeons .

After you’ve read three, answer these questions:

What do you notice about the structure, organization and language of a Tip column?

What predictable elements can readers expect to find in every edition?

If you did the activity above, you might have noticed some of these elements:

Tip articles are short: Each column is about 400 words and around four paragraphs long. Our challenge asks you to write something of about the same length.

The topics are usually ultra-specific: The skills described might be physical ( how to skip a stone ) or emotional ( how to forgive ), serious ( how to suture a wound ) or offbeat ( how to befriend an eagle ), but they are always small enough that they can be fully explained within the limited word count.

Each article features a single expert source: You probably noticed that each column begins and ends with a quote from an expert on the topic and that the same expert gives background and advice throughout the piece. For this contest, we are not requiring you to follow that same format, but we are asking you to find and interview an expert to inform your essay. And if you’d like to follow that format, you may.

The advice is practical, but the pieces are engaging to read. Each includes concrete tips for how to accomplish a task, but it’s never just a boring list of steps. The writer also provides context for the skill so that readers understand how and why they might use it in their own lives. And the quotes Ms. Wollan chooses from her interviews are often colorful or full of voice, as you can see in this piece about how to appreciate spiders .

They are written to the reader: The writer addresses the reader as “you,” and often uses the imperative to craft sentences that tell the reader what (or what not) to do.

Now let’s break it down even further. Choose one Tip article to read — either one you already read in Step 1 or a new one — and then respond to the following questions:

Whom does the writer quote in the piece? Why do you think the author chose this person? What makes him or her an expert in this skill? Do you think this person was a good source of information?

Look closely at when the author chooses to quote the expert and when she paraphrases the information that person gave. What is the difference? Why do you think she chose to quote the lines she did? Give some examples from the piece to explain your reasoning.

You may have been taught in school to cite your sources by using footnotes or by putting them in parentheses after you’ve referenced the information. That’s not how journalists do it, yet they still make their sources clear. Where do you see this in the piece you read? What punctuation or wording does the author use to tell us where certain facts and details come from?

Now let’s look at how the author balances explaining how to acquire a skill and showing why it’s needed: Underline or highlight in one color the lines in the piece that tell readers how to accomplish the task, and use another color to highlight lines that give context. What do you notice about the difference in language? What do you notice about the way these pieces of information are woven together throughout?

After reading this, do you feel confident that you could accomplish the task on your own? What tips, if any, did the expert share that surprised you?

When, where and for what purpose might you use this skill in your own life? What lines help readers see how this skill might be relevant to their lives?

What else do you admire about this piece, whether it’s the topic covered, the way it’s written or anything else?

Now that you better understand how to write a how-to, it’s your turn to write one!

First, of course, you must find a topic. For a Times Insider article about how the Tip column is made , Ms. Wollan and her editor, Dean Robinson, describe how they found their ideas:

She often gets suggestions. Many people ask her to write about navigating interpersonal relationships; Ms. Wollan acquiesced in the case of a highly-requested Tip on how to break up with a therapist. She thinks people come to her because “that stuff is hard to navigate and it’s also hard to Google.” Some of the more recognizable scenarios featured in Tip columns come from Ms. Wollan’s own life. She credits being a mother as the inspiration for columns on delivering babies , singing lullabies and apologizing to children . Mr. Robinson occasionally comes across ideas in his life, too. He suggested a piece on how to find a hamster in your house, he said, “because we’ve lost some hamsters.”

Brainstorm as many possible topics as you can for your how-to piece. Here are some ways to start:

Respond to our related Student Opinion forum . We pose 10 questions designed to help you brainstorm about what you’d like to learn to do, and what you already do well. We hope you’ll not only provide your own answers, but also scroll through the answers of others.

Ask for suggestions. What skills have your friends, family and neighbors always wanted to learn? What do they already consider themselves experts on? Keep a running list.

Get inspiration from the Tip column . As you scroll through the column, which headlines stand out to you? Could you take on a similar topic in a different way? Do any of them inspire other ideas for you?

Work with your class to compile as long a list as you can. After you’ve tried the three ideas above, come to class with your list, then share. Your ideas might spark those of others — and when it’s time to find experts, your classmates may have contacts they can share.

Once you’ve come up with as many ideas as you can, choose one for your piece and refine it until it is the right size for a 400-word piece.

These questions can help:

Which of the topics that you listed gets you most excited? Why?

For which do you think you could realistically find an expert to interview? (More on that in the next step.)

Which are already specific enough that you could thoroughly explain them in 400 words or fewer?

Which are big, but could be broken down? For instance, if you chose “learn to cook,” make a list of specific skills within that larger goal. Maybe you’d like to learn how to chop an onion, bake chocolate chip cookies, or build a healthy meal from the noodles in a ramen packet.

Which topics do you think might be most interesting to a general audience? Which feel especially unique, helpful or unexpected?

Maybe you chose your topic because you know someone who is already an expert at that task or skill. But even if you have, read through this step, because it might help you find someone even more suitable or interesting.

Here is how Ms. Wollan says she found experts for her column:

Ms. Wollan finds interview subjects by “just poking around” online and on the phone. Sometimes she has to talk to a few people before reaching the source she will feature in the column. She interviews most of her subjects by phone for about 45 minutes, sometimes longer. “I love talking to people who just maybe don’t care so much about being an expert,” Ms. Wollan said. Some of her favorite interviews have been with children and people in their 80s, who are often “looser and more generous with their advice.”

Who could be an expert on your topic? At minimum, it should be someone who is knowledgeable enough about your subject that your readers will trust his or her advice.

Some choices might be easy. For example, for her column on how to choose a karaoke song , Ms. Wollan interviewed a world karaoke champion; for her piece on how to recommend a book , she interviewed a librarian; and for her article on how to suture a wound , she interviewed a doctor.

Other choices, however, may be less obvious. For a column on how to breathe , Ms. Wollan interviewed a clarinet player; for one on how to slice a pie , she interviewed a restaurant owner; and for one on how to say goodbye , she interviewed a child-care worker who had bid farewell to many children during her career.

Brainstorm as many potential experts for your piece as you can and then choose one as the subject of your piece.

Your expert doesn’t have to be a world champion or the national head of an organization to have expertise. This person can be anyone with specialized knowledge of a field or topic. For example, if you were writing a piece on how to start bird-watching, you could interview someone who works at a local park or zoo, someone from a birding group in your town or a bird-watcher you know personally, such as a neighbor or teacher.

Like Ms. Wollan, you might start by “poking around online” for potential subjects. And you may have to talk to a few people before you decide on the person you want to feature in your piece.

If you are doing this assignment with classmates, now might be a good time to pool resources. Share your topics, and find out who might know someone with expertise in those areas. Remember that you are not allowed to interview your relatives — but you can suggest your woodworker grandma or your skateboarder cousin to someone who is writing about those topics.

When you reach out to people, keep in mind this advice from Corey Kilgannon, a New York Times reporter who has interviewed people for profiles and who was a guest on a Learning Network webinar about profile writing :

Tell the person what your goal is and where you’re coming from — that you’re writing a profile for a school assignment or a contest or a newspaper or whatever. Be straight with the person you’re interviewing. Some people might be a little nervous or shy about how this is going to turn out, or how they’re going to look. So tell them what it’s for, how long it’s going to be, that there will be photos, or whatever you can.

Once you’ve found the expert for your piece, it’s time to conduct your interview.

In “ The Art of Learning to Do Things ,” Ms. Wollan offers excellent advice that everyone participating in our challenge should take to heart:

If you want to know how to do something, don’t just search the internet. Instead, find a person who already knows how and ask them. At first, they’ll give you a hurried, broad-strokes kind of answer, assuming that you’re uninterested in all the procedural details. But of course that’s precisely what you’re after! Ask for a slowed-down, step-by-step guide through the minutiae of the thing. For seven years, I did exactly that — I called a stranger and asked that person to describe how to do a specific task or skill.

That might sound like a straightforward task, but you should come up with some questions — on your own or with your class — before you talk to your expert.

These might include questions like:

If you were to explain how to do this skill or task to someone who had never done it before, what advice would you give?

What are some common errors that those first learning this skill or trying this task often make? How can they be avoided?

What is your background in this skill? How did you get started with it? How did you learn how to do it?

When or why might a person have to use this skill? What are the benefits of knowing it?

You might also return to some of the Tip articles you read at the beginning of this lesson. Read them closely and see if you can guess what questions the writer may have asked to get the specific quotes and information the expert shared in the piece. Which of these questions might be helpful for your own interview?

Remember that interviewing is an art — and Times journalists can offer you advice.

In addition to asking good questions, it’s also your job as a journalist to make the interviewee feel comfortable, to listen carefully, to ask follow-up questions and to clarify that you have accurate information.

We have written our own extensive how-to on interviewing, filled with tips from Times journalists. Steps 3, 4 and 5 in this lesson will be especially helpful. Created for a contest we ran in 2022, the guide can walk you through preparing and practicing for an interview; keeping the conversation going while conducting it; and shaping the material into a useful piece when you’re done.

Finally, it’s time to write your piece. If you are submitting to our how-to writing contest, keep in mind that your essay must be 400 words or fewer.

Remember, too, that we are inviting you to take inspiration from the Tip column, but that you don’t have to copy its form and structure exactly — unless you’d like to. Most important, though, is to find a way to write what you want in a way that sounds and feels like you.

That said, there are a few key elements that are important to include, which can be found in our contest rubric . Below, we share some examples from the Tip column to illustrate these elements.

Introduce your expert source.

The person you interviewed will be the main source of information for your piece. Ask yourself: How will my readers know this person is an expert in the skill or task? What information should I include about this person to make my readers feel that they can trust the person’s knowledge and advice?

Here is how Ms. Wollan introduces her expert in “ How to Skip a Stone ”:

“Throw at a 20-degree angle,” says Lydéric Bocquet, a physics professor at École Normale Supérieure in Paris.

Later, she further explains Mr. Bocquet’s expertise:

Bocquet’s quest to understand how this happens — how a solid object can skim along water without immediately sinking — began more than a decade ago, while he was skipping stones on the Tarn River in southern France with his young son. “He turns to me,” Bocquet says, “and asks, ‘Why does the stone bounce on the water?’” To answer that question satisfactorily, Bocquet and his colleagues built a mechanical stone skipper and analyzed the angle of each toss using high-speed video. They also created a set of mathematical equations to predict the number of skips.

How do you know Bocquet is an expert in skipping stones? Do you, as the reader, trust him as an expert on this topic? Why or why not?

Explain how to do the task or skill.

The heart of your piece is, of course, your explanation. You might start by making a list of steps that your expert source shared and then paring it down to the most essential information.

Ask yourself:

What instructions are crucial to the reader’s understanding of how to accomplish this skill or task?

What did the expert share that I found surprising or may not have thought of?

What details can I leave out, either because they are not very interesting or because they are less important?

What sequence for the steps make the most sense for my readers?

Consider the first paragraph from “ How to Build a Sand Castle ”:

“Use your architect mind,” says Sudarsan Pattnaik, an award-winning sand sculptor from Puri, a seaside city in India. If you’re building from memory, first envision your castle. For Pattnaik, who is 42, that means well-known Hindu or Muslim sites. “I have made so many Taj Mahals,” he says. Build with fine-grained sand already wetted by an outgoing tide. “Dry sand is too, too difficult,” Pattnaik says. Bring tools: hand shovels, buckets with the bottoms cut off and squirt bottles. Tamp wet sand into your bucket molds, setting one layer and then the next, like bricks. Sculpt architectural details from the top of the mound down. Bring reference photographs if you’re aiming for realism.

See if you can identify all the steps to making a sand castle that the writer shares in this paragraph. What do you notice about the order? What, if anything, do you think the writer might have left out, and why do you think she made that choice? What tips did you find most surprising? What do these lines add to the piece?

Notice also the grammatical structure Ms. Wollan uses: “Build with fine-grained sand”; “bring tools”; “tamp wet sand into your bucket molds”; and so on. This is called the imperative mood and is often used when telling others how to do something.

Include at least one quote.

If you are submitting to our contest, you need to include a minimum of one direct quote from the expert. Ask yourself: What quotes from my interview are so interesting, important, surprising, informative or colorful that I need to find a way to fit them in?

Look at “ How to Do the Splits ,” in which Ms. Wollan interviewed Kendrick Young, a professional sumo wrestler:

Start by stretching every day after you get out of the shower (heat increases muscle and ligament flexibility). Wear comfortable, stretchy attire. “Definitely don’t try to do this in jeans,” Young says. Sit with your legs spread as wide as you can. Once you can do that without hunching, begin to lean toward the ground, exhaling as you go. “You don’t want to be bending over a big pocket of air in your lungs,” Young says. It might help to have someone push down on your midback (historically, sumo wrestlers often stood on one another’s backs to force the body to the floor).

Why do you think the writer chose to include these two specific quotes in the piece, while paraphrasing (or writing in her own words) the rest of what Young said? What additional context did the writer provide to help us understand the purpose and relevance of these quotations?

Provide a purpose for reading.

Remember that a how-to essay is not just a list of steps; your readers should also understand how this topic might be relevant to their lives. Ask yourself: Why should a reader care about this skill or task? Where, when or for what reasons might someone want or need to do it?

Consider the last paragraph in “ How to Start a Family Band ”:

To be in a family band, you have to be prepared to spend a lot of time together, actively working on cohesion. Music can act as a kind of binding agent. When they’re not in quarantine, the Haim sisters see, or at least talk to, each other every day. “Instead of camping as kids, or going hiking, it was like, ‘OK, we’re going to practice a few songs,’” Danielle says. “It was definitely my parents’ ploy to spend more time with us.”

What reason does the writer provide for why a reader might want to try this activity? What additional background does she share from the expert, Danielle Haim, to help explain why a family — even one that might not be musical — may want to start a band together?

Submit your final piece.

On top of this, writing is just one aspect of one subject among many.

The best way to help our students to overcome the challenge of writing in any genre is to help them to break things down into their component parts and give them a basic formula to follow.

In this article, we will break article writing down into its components and present a formulaic approach that will provide a basic structure for our students to follow.

Once this structure is mastered, students can, of course, begin to play with things.

But, until then, there is plenty of room within the discipline of the basic structure for students to express themselves in the article form.

An article’s shape and structure will vary depending on whether it’s intended for publication in a newspaper, magazine, or online.

Each of these media has its own requirements. For example, a magazine feature article may go into great depth on a topic, allowing for long, evocative paragraphs of exposition, while an online blog article may be full of lots of short paragraphs that get to the point without too much fanfare.

Each of these forms makes different demands on the writer, and it’s for this reason that most newspapers, magazines, and big websites provide writers with specific submission guidelines.

So, with such diverse demands placed on article writers, how do we go about teaching the diverse skill required to our students?

Luckily, we can break most types of articles down into some common key features.

Below we’ll take a look at the most important of these, along with an activity to get your students practicing each aspect right away.

Finally, we’ll take a look at a few general tips on article writing.


The headline.

The purpose of the headline is to capture the reader’s attention and let them know what the article is about. All of this in usually no more than 4 or 5 words!

There is an art to good headline writing and all sorts of literary devices (e.g alliteration and metaphor) can be used to create an eye-catching and intriguing headline.

The best way for students to learn how headlines work is to view some historical samples.

Newspaper headlines especially are known for being short and pithy. Here are just a few examples to whet the appetite:

  • Hitler Is Dead
  • Lincoln Shot
  • Men Walk On The Moon
  • Berlin Wall Crumbles

You could encourage students to find some pithy examples of their own. It’s amazing how much information can be condensed into so few words – this is the essence of good headline writing.

Headlines Practice Activity:

Give students opportunities to practice headline writing in isolation from article writing itself. For example, take sample stories from newspapers and magazines and challenge students to write new headlines for them. Set a word limit appropriate to the skills and age of the students. For example, younger, more inexperienced students might write 9-word headlines, while older, more skilled students might thrive with the challenge of a 4-word limit.


Subheadings give the reader more information on what the article is about. For this reason, they’re often a little longer than headlines and use a smaller font, though still larger (or in bold) than the font used in the body of the text.

Subheadings provide a little more of the necessary detail to inform readers what’s going on. If a headline is a jab, the subheading is the cross.

In magazines and online articles especially, there are often subheadings throughout the article. In this context, they let the reader know what each paragraph/section is about.

Subheadings also help the reader’s eye to scan the article and quickly get a sense of the story, for the writer they help immensely to organize the structure of the story.

Practice Activity:

One way to help organize paragraphs in an article is to use parallel structure.

Parallel structure is when we use similar words, phrases, and grammar structures. We might see this being used in a series of subheadings in a ‘How to’ article where the subheadings all start with an imperative such as choose , attach , cut , etc.

Have you noticed how all the sections in this ‘Key Features’ part of this article start simply with the word ‘The’? This is another example of a parallel structure.

Yet another example of parallel structure is when all the subheadings appear in the form of a question.

Whichever type of parallel structure students use, they need to be sure that they all in some way relate to the original title of the article.

To give students a chance to practice writing subheadings using parallel structure, instruct them to write subheadings for a piece of text that doesn’t already have them.


Writing good, solid paragraphs is an art in itself. Luckily, you’ll find comprehensive guidance on this aspect of writing articles elsewhere on this site.

But, for now, let’s take a look at some general considerations for students when writing articles.

The length of the paragraphs will depend on the medium. For example, for online articles paragraphs are generally brief and to the point. Usually no more than a sentence or two and rarely more than five.

This style is often replicated in newspapers and magazines of a more tabloid nature.

Short paragraphs allow for more white space on the page or screen. This is much less daunting for the reader and makes it easier for them to focus their attention on what’s being said – a crucial advantage in these attention-hungry times.

Lots of white space makes articles much more readable on devices with smaller screens such as phones and tablets. Chunking information into brief paragraphs enables online readers to scan articles more quickly too, which is how much of the information on the internet is consumed – I do hope you’re not scanning this!

Conversely, articles that are written more formally, for example, academic articles, can benefit from longer paragraphs which allow for more space to provide supporting evidence for the topic sentence.

Deciding on the length of paragraphs in an article can be done by first thinking about the intended audience, the purpose of the article, as well as the nature of the information to be communicated.

A fun activity to practice paragraphing is to organize your students into groups and provide them with a copy of an article with the original paragraph breaks removed. In their groups, students read the article and decide on where they think the paragraphs should go.

To do this successfully, they’ll need to consider the type of publication they think the article is intended for, the purpose of the article, the language level, and the nature of the information.

When the groups have finished adding in their paragraph breaks they can share and compare their decisions with the other groups before you finally reveal where the breaks were in the original article.

Article Photos and Captions

Photos and captions aren’t always necessary in articles, but when they are, our students must understand how to make the most of them.

Just like the previous key features on our list, there are specific things students need to know to make the most of this specific aspect of article writing.

  The internet has given us the gift of access to innumerable copyright-free images to accompany our articles, but what criteria should students use when choosing an image?

To choose the perfect accompanying image/s for their article, students need to identify images that match the tone of their article.

Quirky or risque images won’t match the more serious tone of an academic article well, but they might work perfectly for that feature of tattoo artists.

Photos are meant to bring value to an article – they speak a thousand words after all. It’s important then that the image is of a high enough resolution that the detail of those ‘thousand words’ is clearly visible to the reader.

Just as the tone of the photo should match the tone of the article, the tone of the caption should match the tone of the photo.

Captions should be informative and engaging. Often, the first thing a reader will look at in an article is the photos and then the caption. Frequently, they’ll use the information therein to decide whether or not they’ll continue to read.

When writing captions, students must avoid redundancy. They need to add information to that which is already available to the reader by looking at the image.

There’s no point merely describing in words what the reader can clearly see with their own two eyes. Students should describe things that are not immediately obvious, such as date, location, or the name of the event.

One last point, captions should be written in the present tense. By definition, the photo will show something that has happened already. Despite this, students should write as if the action in the image is happening right now.

Remind students that their captions should be brief; they must be careful not to waste words with such a tight format.

For this fun activity, you’ll need some old magazines and newspapers. Cut some of the photos out minus their captions. All the accompanying captions should be cut out and jumbled up. It’s the students’ job to match each image with the correct accompanying caption.

Students can present their decisions and explanations when they’ve finished.

A good extension exercise would be to challenge the students to write a superior caption for each of the images they’ve worked on.


Now your students have the key features of article writing sewn up tightly, let’s take a look at a few quick and easy tips to help them polish up their general article writing skills.

1. Read Widely – Reading widely, all manner of articles, is the best way students can internalize some of the habits of good article writing. Luckily, with the internet, it’s easy to find articles on any topic of interest at the click of a mouse.

2. Choose Interesting Topics – It’s hard to engage the reader when the writer is not themselves engaged. Be sure students choose article topics that pique their own interest (as far as possible!).

3. Research and Outline – Regardless of the type of article the student is writing, some research will be required. The research will help an article take shape in the form of an outline. Without these two crucial stages, articles run the danger of wandering aimlessly and, worse still, of containing inaccurate information and details.

4. Keep Things Simple – All articles are about communicating information in one form or another. The most effective way of doing this is to keep things easily understood by the reader. This is especially true when the topic is complex.

5. Edit and Proofread – This can be said of any type of writing, but it still bears repeating. Students need to ensure they comprehensively proofread and edit their work when they’ve ‘finished’. The importance of this part of the writing process can’t be overstated.

Your article should be formulated in a way it is very easy for the reader to grab important points from, even in very little time.

To make your article well-spaced and easily anecdote so that it is beneficial for readers, use the following practices:

  • Use Bullet Points: It is quite common to ignore long sentences. It is highly convenient for readers to rely on simple bulletins. So, use bullet points whenever you can.
  • Use Subheadings: Divide your article into relevant parts. Give those parts subheadings if possible so that readers have the option of jumping to the one valuable to them. Subheadings also define and shape the article.
  • Small Paragraph: Give your article spaces. Leave a line after a paragraph. It is like giving some fresh air to the readers. Compact writing overwhelms readers before even beginning to see if your article is good or not. So better to make the article visually clean.

6.    Create a Draft for Topics

A systematic article is a way to go. Begin from A and end on Z. It is unwise to drop off the pieces of information on the page as you receive them. Do research wisely and write the valuable topics and facts as drafts before actually writing them. You will probably gather information and inspiration in bits and pieces; it is your function to curate them into a structured building.

So, before jumping into the writing part, select your topics, find the notes and facts about them, select the questions you will be looking into, and then you will be ready with a loaded pen. Drafts ensure you don’t waste your time rummaging for extra pins, as well as helps in some overview on the article. This point was clearly not for the readers, but for your own convenience.

7.    Highlight Important Texts

Work in numbers along with words if possible. All these true figures add true value to the article. For example, which one sounds more compelling and truer?

At last, no one would be interested to read a whole article filled with small grammatical and spelling mistakes.

To avoid these mistakes that could ruin an otherwise perfect article, do thorough proofreading and edit the parts which are wrong or seem not as clear as they should be. Read your article again thoroughly. Every writer, however famous or good he/she may be, makes mistakes that are only put into the right place via extra and tiring efforts of going back into the work and being vigilant.

Not sure what to write an article about? That’s what you need to do your research for. Of course, you can find an example of a good article on the competitor’s site and rewrite it. However, if you are keen on writing an article that’s unique and engaging, I recommend doing your research. 

If you don’t know where to start, these article writing tips will come in handy: 

  • Make sure to identify your buyer personas  
  • Find the article’s purpose (increase subscribers, boost conversions, share expert opinion, etc. )
  • Gather as much information as possible – make sure you’ve checked not 2-3 resources, but at least the top 10 search results
  • Organize the information and compose a brief outline

Step 2. Come up with a catchy title

The headline of your article is the first thing readers will see. And there are two options here: either you’ll get their attention in 5 seconds, or you’ll lose the readers in 5 seconds. 

So what should you do?  First, make sure it’s eye-catching and gives a clear idea of your article. And what’s most important, it should specify the problem and provide readers with a solution.

While many people believe SEO article writing is something complex, it’s actually a no-brainer. All you need to keep in mind is:

A meta description is a proven way to make people want to click on your article. It helps search engines understand the topic of your article and place your articles at the top of search results according to specific search queries.

Make sure your meta description follows these rules:

  • It contains a primary keyword
  • It fits within 150 characters
  • Has a  call-to-action (not mandatory but a truly powerful tactic!)

To maximize your article’s exposure on search engine results pages, you need to insert relevant keywords. So, focus your article around one primary keyword phrase. Pick one and insert it in the intro, conclusion, heading, and subheadings.

Of course, don’t forget about additional long-tail keywords which can reinforce your article. Generate a list of the quick-win keywords using Ahrefs (Keyword Explorer -> Search suggestions). However, make sure you’re not making your content too wordy and weird – avoid keyword stuffing!

Instead, we take jobs we don’t like and, if lucky, have a little free time to do what we love. </span></p><p><span>While scrolling through my favorite Reddit community, R/Askreddit, I stumbled upon a question seeking to discover why more people don’t follow their dreams. </span></p><p><span>The answers, though unsurprising, showcase some of the problems inherent in our current system. </span></p>

Everyone wants to write the next great American novel until they sit down and discover that writing is hard!

It takes a particular skill and mindset to craft an intriguing story and write in a way others will appreciate. On the plus side, it’s a skill anyone can learn. While scrolling through a fantastic writing community on Reddit, I found a great question asking writing enthusiasts to share the best advice they ever received on how to improve their writing. 

Use some of this advice to practice your craft and become a better writer.

Write Often

They say practice makes perfect, and the same is true for writing. The more you write, the better you will become. 

“ Get in the habit of writing as often as you can,” shared one user, adding, “you’ll get nothing done if you wait to be inspired.”

To be a great author, you should learn from the greats (and not so greats.) Devour as many books as possible to taste different genres , writing styles, and techniques. Discover through reading what works and what doesn’t. 

“I got into a big writer’s block with all options and ideas. Reading really dug me out; I understood what I liked, what I didn’t, reminded me why I wanted to write,” admitted one commenter. 

<p><span>Holidays are ideal for learning about our history and culture. Take the opportunity to teach your kids about the pilgrims, natives, and the true story of Thanksgiving.</span></p><p><span>Don’t neglect the negatives as they do in school. Don’t Judge Your First Draft

First drafts are drafts for a reason. They aren’t going to be good. “It should be really bad!” exclaimed one user, discussing the quality of first drafts. 

The user went on to give a great lesson for all aspiring writers that they heard elsewhere “Every first draft is perfect because the only purpose of a first draft is to exist,” they said, explaining, “if you wrote and finished a first draft, you did it perfectly.”

<p><span>Everyone wants a partner they can trust. Even white lies can spell doom for a budding relationship. </span></p><p><span>If you want a successful partnership, embrace honesty, even when it’s hard. The only things that you should ever lie about are surprises. </span></p>

Compelling characters are critical to a great story . “Flat characters are way too common these days, even in ‘professionally’ made stuff,” lamented one user. 

Others said you need to make your characters want something and make them change as the story develops. “In the end, make sure they have undergone some change,” advised one Redditor, “even if they didn’t get what they wanted.”

“If you expect to succeed as a writer, rudeness should be the second-to-least of your concerns. The least of all should be polite society and what it expects. If you intend to write as truthfully as you can, your days as a member of polite society are numbered, anyway,” King said in the book. 

When writing, you need to be truthful. You need to dig deep into the vast darkness of humanity and showcase what you’ve found, flaws and all. If you avoid the truth to appease the pearl cultures, you’ll never be successful as a writer.

FBI and police requesting videos, tips from Super Bowl parade shooting

The FBI has  set up a website  asking for tips or videos from the Super Bowl parade shooting that took place on Tuesday afternoon in Kansas City.

“FBI and KCPD are requesting any videos from the Super Bowl shooting and any video of shooters attempting to flee the scene,” the website says in part.

Anyone with any information, photos, or videos is encouraged by police and the FBI to submit them to the website.

Missouri legislator who survived shooting alongside 5-year-old daughter now mourns slain DJ

A Missouri legislator who survived the Kansas City Chiefs parade shooting on Wednesday, along with his 5-year-old daughter, told CNN that he is now mourning the loss of his long-time friend, who died after being shot at the scene.

Manny Abarca, the treasurer of the Kansas City Public School Board, told CNN’s Laura Coates that he and his daughter had left the main stage area when they heard screams and saw a flood of people running toward them.

He said he immediately picked up his daughter and sheltered in a nearby restaurant with other Kansas City Chiefs players, owners, family members, and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

Abarca said his daughter went into “protocol mode” and told her father: “This is like training.”

Abarca was a lifelong friend of Lisa Lopez-Galvan , who died during the shooting. He noted that she was a mother and embraced the Latino culture while working at the local radio station.

“Such a tragic loss both to our community and also to her family,” he added.

Abarca said multiple family members who were with Lopez-Galvan at the parade were among those wounded.

Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a Kansas City-area radio DJ, died after being shot at the Chiefs victory rally, according to a post shared by her employer, KKFI radio 90.1 FM.

“It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life,” the station  shared on Facebook . 

Police have not provided any details surrounding her death.

“Lisa was one of our programmers/DJs on Taste of Tejano. Like all our programmers, she was a volunteer who donated her time and talent to KKFI. Along with her co-producer/DJ Tommy Andrade, their show has brought a voice to the KC community that is missed in the mainstream media," Kelly Dougherty, the station's director of development and communications, said in an email to CNN.

“We are absolutely devastated at the loss of such an amazing person who gave so much to KKFI and the KC community," Dougherty added.

Lopez-Galvan's bio on the station's website said she thought music “is Iife and a source of happiness." She worked as a bilingual private DJ for over 15 years before becoming a co-host of Taste of Tejano in March of 2022.

A Missouri legislator who attended the Kansas City Chief’s Super Bowl celebration parade with his 5-year-old daughter told CNN that multiple family members of Lopez-Galvan were among those wounded.

Biden says shooting should “shock us, shame us into acting” and urges Congress to enact gun laws

President Joe Biden called on Congress and the country to act in the wake of Wednesday’s mass shooting following a parade for the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs. 

“It is time to act. That’s where I stand. And I ask the country to stand with me. To make your voice heard in Congress so we finally act to ban assault weapons, to limit high-capacity magazines, strengthen background checks, keep guns out of the hands of those who have no business owning them or handling them,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House.  

Biden remarked that the Super Bowl win should have been a joyous occasion.

“For this joy to be turned to tragedy today in Kansas City cuts deep in the American soul. Today’s events should move us, shock us, shame us into acting. What are we waiting for? What else do we need to see? How many more families need to be torn apart?”

Kamala Harris calls on Congress to pass “reasonable gun safety laws” after Kansas City shooting

Vice President Kamala Harris called on Congress members to pass “reasonable gun safety laws” after Wednesday’s shooting following a parade for the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs. 

“The reality of it is a lot of this can be prevented if members of legislatures, including the United States Congress, just have the courage to act with reasonable gun safety law,” Harris told reporters at Joint Base Andrews before stepping aboard Air Force 2 en route to the Munich Security Conference.

Harris added that her prayers are with those who have been affected by the shooting. 

In September 2023, President Joe Biden established the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, and tasked the vice president with overseeing the office.

Man who tackled individual with weapon after Super Bowl shooting describes the moment: "It's just a reaction"

A man who tackled an individual who had a weapon following today's deadly shooting in Kansas City, Missouri, described the moment on CNN this evening.

"You don't think about it. It's just a reaction," Paul Contreras told CNN's Erin Burnett, who showed video of the moment he tackled the person.

Contreras described hitting the individual from behind and knocking the gun out of their possession. Contreras and another person who was attending the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl celebrations then tackled the gunman to the ground and waited for police to show up and take over, Contreras said.

"He was fighting the whole time," he said of the gunman. "And we were fighting him to keep him down."

Contreras's daughter, who shot the video of the incident, said, "It all happened so fast."

"I didn't want to leave my dad's side because who knew what could've happened or if they needed help," Alyssa Marsh Contreras told CNN.

It's unclear if the person who was tackled by Contreras was one of the three people that Kansas City police said were detained following the shooting.

At least 29 people treated after kansas city shooting, including 19 for gunshot injuries, hospitals say.

At least 29 people are being treated for injuries following the deadly shooting Wednesday after a massive celebration for the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs in Kansas City, Missouri, according to four local hospitals.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said during a news conference that 22 people were shot in the incident, one of whom died from their injuries. But the police are still working on the total number of those injured.

The hospitals told CNN that 19 of 29 patients are being treated for gunshot injuries.

  • The University Health Truman Medical Center received 12 victims, eight of whom suffered gunshot wounds, according to Dr. Mark Steele. Of those with gunshot wounds, Steele said that two are in critical condition and six are in stable condition.
  • The University of Kansas Health System is treating one gunshot victim from the incident, according to Alexis Del Cid, an anchor and host with the hospital system's news network. Del Cid had no information on how many may have come to their hospital with other injuries.
  • Children’s Mercy Hospital received 12 patients from the incident, according to Stephenie Meyer, senior vice president and chief nursing officer. Eleven of those are children between the ages of 6 and 15. Nine have gunshot wounds, she said at a news conference. All the patients are expected to fully recover, Meyer added.
  • Three patients walked into St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, according to spokesperson Laurel Gifford. They all have minor injuries. In addition, St. Luke’s is treating one gunshot victim who is in critical condition, she said.

Police respond after shots were fired near Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, on Wednesday.

A community that came together to celebrate a dramatic Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory on Sunday is now recovering from a shooting that wounded dozens of people, including children. At least 22 people suffered gunshot injuries and one of them has died, Kansas City officials said Wednesday.

But there is still a lot that police do not know as the investigation gets underway into a tragic ending to a festive day in the Missouri city.

The shooting, which happened after a parade and rally for the Chiefs, is at least the 48th mass shooting in the United States so far this year, according to  the Gun Violence Archive .

Here's what we know so far:

Victims: There are at least 22 people with gunshot wounds , Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said. One of those people has died, said Kansas City Fire Department Interim Chief Ross Grundyson. Some of the shooting victims were children , he added. Officials are still working to identify the person killed.

What we know about the condition of the survivors:

  • 8 had immediately life-threatening injuries and were transported to hospitals within 10 minutes, according to Grundyson.
  • 7 had life-threatening injuries
  • 6 had minor injuries

What happened: The shooting happened on the west side of Union Station in downtown Kansas City, Graves said. Though witnesses described watching officers run into the surrounding buildings, the police chief said the incident happened outside. When officers arrived on the scene, they immediately started helping people who were hurt.

People detained: Graves said police have detained three people for further investigation. She said earlier that officers detained two people when they arrived at the scene, with officers even chasing one person . A video has circulated which shows "some fans tackling someone," she said. Authorities are trying to determine if one of the detained individuals is the same person featured in the video. Graves also said police have recovered firearms .

Key things we don't know yet:

  • How many shots were fired
  • The amount of time between shots
  • Who was the gunman and was there more than one

What is happening now: Police are collecting physical and digital evidence, conducting interviews and asking victims some questions, Graves said. “There’s a lot of work ahead in this is just the beginning stages, but we’re moving as fast as we can,” she said. Federal law enforcement has been assisting, according to the White House.

Reaction: The Kansas City Chiefs organization said in a statement it was saddened by the shooting and called it a "senseless act of violence." The National Football League said its thoughts are "with the victims and everyone affected" and thanked law enforcement. Some  individual players  also shared messages of support on social media.

The National Football League issued a statement Wednesday following a deadly shooting that took place at Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl celebrations.

"We are deeply saddened by the senseless shooting that occurred today near the end of the rally in Kansas City for the Chiefs. Our thoughts are with the victims and everyone affected," the league said on X. "We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency personnel."
