Detail-oriented medical assistant with 20+ years of experience in clinics and hospitals across Idaho, with a depth of knowledge of HIPAA, ERM software, medical terminology, and Microsoft Office. I enjoy working in fast-paced environments that enable me to improve patient comfort, physician efficiency, and operating systems.

What we like:  This summary gets right to the point, discussing some of the most valuable skills a great medical assistant will possess while highlighting years of work experience and how they would add value to the business.

That means, if you’ve been a medical assistant for many years, you don’t need to include information about the job you had in high school.   • Active voice:  Avoid passive voice. A passive phrase, like “the IV was inserted by the R.N.,” is less interesting than active language, like “the R.N. inserted the IV.”
  • Avoid personal pronouns:  The employer knows your resume is written about you! 
  • Either using punctuation or not:  When you start writing your bullet points, you can leave periods at the end of your sentences or skip them. Whatever you choose, be consistent. 
  • Verb tense:  Though you can keep your current experience in the past tense, ensure all your past work experience is written in the past tense.

We like these bullet points because they use active voice and action words while avoiding personal pronouns such as “I” or “my,” and they have consistent punctuation written in the past tense.

The only thing our above bullet point examples are missing is quantifiable metrics (numbers). Numbers are an essential element in your medical assistant resume, and you should aim for at least 50 percent of your bullet points, including them.

Numbers positively impact your resume in two ways. First, the visual interest helps break up text and draw in hiring managers’ eyes. This is critical, as it will encourage them to read your resume more thoroughly. Second, numbers are impressive because they demonstrate your proven job performance. Here are a few places you can leverage metrics from your medical assistant work experience:

  • Consider highlighting your organizational skills by noting the number of patient records you’ve organized. An objective gives them an idea of where you are going. Summaries tend to run longer than objectives and are intended to show off the experience level of someone established in a career.

If you are new to the workforce, are changing careers, or are entering a specialized field after receiving necessary qualifications, the objective will be your foot in the door of your new career.

What to Include in Your Medical Assistant Objective

                Have you browsed through a few sample resumes online and thought, “ Man … these sound pretty plain. I should go for something more original. ”? If so, stop.

                It hurts to hear, but this is the time you may want to kill your darlings and go for straight-laced professionalism. Without a 30-year track record of demonstrated perfection in your field, it will be difficult to convince a recruiter during their 6.25 seconds of review that your use of puns and fancy adjectives makes you the best choice for the job. Especially as a medical assistant, it is critical that you portray the level of professional decorum that will be expected of you in the workplace.

                Instead of wordplay, you want to hone in on keywords that recruiters are already scanning for in your first few lines. Integrating these keywords into your objective will characterize you as a high-quality candidate right off the bat, leaving potential employers more open to reading your resume in its entirety.

                When figuring out which keywords to include, keep in mind that you should be tailoring your resume to the job you are applying for. Copy-paste applications can easily backfire when they are too general to elevate you above the competition. Think about this: the last time you saw a job posting that interested you, what was your reaction? Most likely you read through the description of duties and desired qualifications and thought, Hey, that sounds perfect for me!

                With that in mind, your objective should reflect exactly what makes a position perfect for you over anyone else. If the posting is seeking a highly organized medical assistant with considerable skill in verbal communication and experience with MEDx software , then you’ll want to highlight in your objective your organization , verbal communication , and any experience you have with the software this facility uses. The key takeaway here is, most employers will be very up front with what qualifications they are seeking in their candidates, so it is wise to customize your objective to show how you are exactly what they are looking for.

What to Keep in Mind While Drafting Your Resume Objective

                Brevity is your friend. As mentioned before, your objective should not go over two sentences, and in many cases, just one will suffice. Either way, you need to ensure you are including who you are (your title), the value you can bring to the company (qualifications), and your career goal(s) (what you hope to achieve through this position).

Integrating your title may seem awkward at first, so it may help to start off with those keywords you fished for while reading the job description, then add the title where it reads best. Using the previous example, we could start with a qualifier that describes the candidate and go from there:

                This is a simple, yet effective way to get straight to the point. Many people find rewriting easier than writing, so don’t shy away from reworking your objective until it flows well and portrays you accurately. If you are a career-changer, you can include some relevant experience as well.

Organized, patient-oriented medical assistant with seven years of retail pharmacy experience seeks position in dermatologist’s office.

                Lastly, you can add in any education you know hiring managers are on the lookout for, as well as details about your goals and what you can do to help the company achieve its own. If it starts getting wordy, don’t hesitate to break it into two sentences.

In the past, job seekers typically relied on a resume objective to introduce themselves to prospective employers. In recent years, however, the hiring process has evolved in a myriad of ways. This guide will explore the resume objective and assess its value within the contemporary job market.

A resume objective is a concise opening statement that explains your career goals and why you’re applying for a particular job. While resume objectives were widely used for many years, they’re now considered outdated by most resume writers and recruiters. In its place, job seekers in today’s market have adopted what is referred to as a professional summary, profile, or summary of qualifications.

The primary reason for this shift is that a resume objective focuses on the candidate’s goals, whereas a professional summary demonstrates why the candidate is qualified for the job they’re applying for. A resume’s main goal is to generate interviews, and the best way to make a positive impression on the hiring manager is to emphasize the potential value you can bring to their organization.

The short answer is no in most cases. Not only does the resume objective take the emphasis away from your qualifications, but it risks making you appear dated in the eyes of potential employers. Even when writing a resume for a grad school or internship application, you’ll be better served by simply building a strong summary that emphasizes your most impressive academic achievements and relevant skill sets.

At a cursory glance, one might think this is a situation where having a resume objective might be useful. It does present an opportunity to explain your desire to transition into a new field. However, once you look deeper, the same drawbacks continue to emerge.

The truth is hiring managers aren’t interested in learning about your long-term career goals when reviewing your resume. They understand that you’re interested in the job because you’ve applied for it. Rather than explaining your objectives, emphasize relevant experience and qualifications from your previous industry that will allow you to excel in the new position.

This is another unique circumstance where the idea of a resume objective appears more suitable. Employment gaps can be incredibly challenging to overcome in the competitive job market, and providing context for the hiring manager seems like a viable strategy. Unfortunately, this approach tends to make the gap even more glaring and diverts attention away from your qualifications. An employment gap is better addressed during the interview and, in some cases, even the cover letter. It should never be the first thing you draw attention to on your resume.

While we can’t recommend using a resume objective, if you do opt for this approach, there are ways to heighten its impact. Rather than only highlighting your career goals, create an objective that emphasizes how your unique background and skills can create value for potential employers. Also, mention something specific about the company and why you’re seeking this opportunity. This allows you to tell some of your story while also demonstrating how your qualifications align with the roles you’re targeting.

Action: “I listened diligently to the patient’s concern, checked the billing statement, found an error, corrected it, and explained how we would resolve that for them.”

Outcome: “The patient walked away happy and felt good that the concern was addressed appropriately and timely.”

A medical administrative assistant should be well-versed in relevant legal requirements, given that the health sector is highly regulated.

Be prepared to discuss what you have done to maintain patient confidentiality according to the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act guidelines. Give examples where you had to ensure privacy was kept and security provided when dealing with patient information. Be prepared to answer questions on OSHA standards, billing regulations, and other applicable healthcare laws.
