What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is swelling caused by a build-up of lymphatic fluid in the tissues. It can be a result of surgery or radiation treatments for breast cancer or prostate cancer. It can also be caused by: other surgeries, trauma, infection or rare inherited conditions.

What is Lymphedema Therapy?

Our treatment begins with a thorough evaluation, including measuring the affected area. From there we work with you to determine a personalized plan based on your needs. We also use treatment techniques including:

  • A gentle type of massage that moves fluid from blocked pathways, reducing swelling, known as manual lymph drainage (MLD):
  • A gradual compression of the affected area using special bandaging techniques and garments to reduce swelling and improve circulation
  • Skin care, exercise and ongoing education

What is Aquatic Therapy?

As its name implies, Aquatic Therapy is an exercise program performed in the water and is offered at the Boothbay Region YMCA. It can help strengthen your muscles with less stress on your joints.

By using a pool that has different water depths and warm water, aquatic therapy promotes muscle relaxation, muscle strengthening and increased blood flow to injured areas. If you have an orthopedic injury, neurological conditions or are a pediatric patient, aquatic therapy might be for you.

Aquatic Therapy can help you:

  • Improve flexibility
  • Start exercising
  • Improve awareness of body movement
  • Lower risk of injury or re-injury during rehabilitation
  • Enhance walking ability

Common Conditions We Treat

Swallowing disorders.

Swallowing is a complex neuromuscular activity and is susceptible to problems as a result of strokes, head injuries, esophageal disorders, head and neck cancers and neurological diseases like Parkinson’s disease.  Swallowing disorders (dysphagia)  are of particular concern and urgency because in its severe form, dysphagia can lead to aspiration pneumonia.

Our speech-language pathologists offer clinical evaluations and diagnostic tests to assess the swallow function. We work closely with patients and families to tailor a plan that can promote good eating and drinking habits while preserving health and safety.

Difficulty Speaking

Difficulty speaking often has to do with problems in engaging muscles involved in speech (apraxia). Speech impairments in adults are most commonly the result of a stroke, head injury or brain surgery.

Treatment focuses on strengthening the muscles used for speech, improving coordination and training in strategies for improving intelligibility of speech.

Language Problems

Neuro-cognitive issues.

Speech-language pathologists also evaluate and provide rehabilitation for cognitive deficits, which are most often associated with strokes, head injuries and traumatic brain injuries.

Therapy may include learning strategies in improving attention, memory function, organization, reasoning and problem solving, with the primary objective of returning patients to safe and functional living while maximizing independence.

Voice Problems

Voice is assessed both perceptually and objectively using diagnostic tools, such as a computerized speech lab. There are many causes for voice disorders (dysphonia). People who use their voice for their employment are often at risk for straining the vocal cords and/or developing nodules or polyps. Other conditions that affect vocal function include spasmodic dysphonia, presbylaryngis, cancers and Parkinson’s disease, to name a few.

Voice therapy may focus on education in vocal hygiene and training in reducing vocal strain and developing a strong and clear vocal quality. Our speech-language pathologists work closely with the referring physicians to develop a treatment plan that is effective and appropriate for vocal rehabilitation.

A Heartland Speech & OT Fan

The therapists at Heartland are MIRACLE WORKERS!!!!! They are excellent communicators and provide families with strategies that help foster continued growth at home! They have always been kind, thoughtful and willing to go the extra mile! I can’t say enough great things about our experience!

The ladies at heartland speech have been a godsend for my family!! They have and continue to give us the encouragement and support we need to continue on this journey. I would never take my child to anyone else. They have become more than just our therapist but family!!

Jennifer K.

Love that we can receive both speech and OT here. We are greeted warmly every week and have seen consistent and steady progress. I look forward to the day we no longer need services but it will be like saying goodbye to family. Highly recommend!

We have been bringing our son to Heartland for over a year now, and I cannot express enough thanks for the help we (parents) and our son have received. He has improved by leaps and bounds, and everyone at Heartland is amazing. They’re always open with communication and I cannot explain how happy I am we got to work with Laura, Emma, Karen, Bailey, and all the other staff at Heartland.

All of the therapists are wonderful professionals and individuals! Our son would not be where he is today without their hard work to help him grow in so many ways. And Laura is terrific to work with every week, too!

Both of my sons have gone here for Speech, OT, and Feeding Therapy. We have had the pleasure of working with them for almost 3 years and they have helped my boys so much, and myself. I highly recommend them to any family. The staff is like family to my sons and me. Thank you Heartland!!!!

Course overview.

Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) is a growing profession which offers a range of career options; from working with children, adults, people with learning disabilities, and in education and healthcare settings such as hospitals, schools, clinics, in the community, and in people's own homes.

Those who access SLT services may have speech, language, communication, or eating and swallowing needs related to childhood development, learning disabilities, or may have acquired a difficulty in relation to a condition (such as stroke, brain injury, neurological condition, hearing impairment, dementia or mental health).

This programme offers the opportunity for graduates to fast track beyond their first degree into rewarding professional careers. A range of learning opportunities are supported by academic team in the University, in partnership with Speech and Language Therapists in practice settings.

As well as self directed study and assignments, learners will access teaching within their own cohort on campus and online. Our aim is to develop confident, reflective, and resilient professionals who are able to apply their theoretical knowledge flexibly to meet the unique needs of individuals and their families or carers.

The interprofessional components of the course aim to develop skilled and compassionate practitioners who have the confidence to promote professional, social, and political change in health and social care. Collaborative working with peers from a variety of disciplines promotes teamwork, and an application of research skills in the transformation of health and social care services.

In practice settings, a series of placements in local Speech and Language Therapy services, where each learner under the supervision of a registered SLT learns to practice the clinical and professional skills. Successful completion of this programme provides eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
