The Ultimate Guide to Editing PDFs for Free in Word
PDF files are a popular format for sharing documents, but they can be difficult to edit. If you need to make changes to a PDF file, you may be wondering how to edit it without purchasing expensive software. Fortunately, there is a solution: editing PDFs for free in Word. In this article, we will guide you through the process of editing PDFs using Word.
Converting PDFs to Word
The first step in editing a PDF in Word is converting the file. This can be done using an online converter or by opening the PDF directly in Word.
One popular online converter is Smallpdf. Simply upload your PDF file and select “Word” as the output format. Once the conversion is complete, download the new Word document and open it in Microsoft Word.
Alternatively, you can open the PDF directly in Word by selecting “Open” from the “File” menu and choosing your PDF file. A dialog box will appear asking if you want to convert the file. Click “OK” to proceed.
Once your PDF has been converted to a Word document, you can begin editing text. To do this, simply click on any text area and start typing. You can also delete or move text by highlighting it and using the backspace or cut and paste functions.
If you want to change fonts or formatting, select the text and use the formatting tools in the Home tab of Microsoft Word.
If your PDF includes images that need editing, you can do this in Word as well. Simply right-click on an image and select “Format Picture”. From here, you can adjust size, brightness/contrast levels, add borders or effects, crop images or even change their position within your document.
Saving Your Changes
Once you have finished making all necessary changes, it’s time to save your document. To do this, simply select “Save” from the “File” menu. This will save your changes to the Word document.
If you need to share the document as a PDF, you can also convert the Word file back to PDF format. This can be done by selecting “Save As” from the “File” menu and choosing “PDF” as the output format.
Editing PDFs in Word is a simple and cost-effective solution for those who need to make changes to their documents. By following these steps, you can easily convert your PDFs to Word and start making edits right away. With practice, you’ll be able to produce professional-level documents that meet all of your needs without ever needing expensive software or services.

What is a Literature Review?
“A review of the literature consists of reading, analyzing, and writing a synthesis of scholarly materials about a specific topic. When the review is of scientific literature, the focus is on the hypotheses, the scientific methods, the strengths and weaknesses of the study, the results, and the authors’ interpretations and conclusions. A review of the scientific literature is fundamental to understanding the accumulated knowledge about the topic being reviewed."
Garrard, J. (2017). Health sciences literature review made easy: The matrix method . Burlington, MA: Jones and Bartlett Learning. p. 4.
For a review of the literature, you want to conduct a comprehensive search to identify as many sources as possible on your topic. Be sure to take notes on your search process, otherwise it's easy to lose track of what you've already tried.
Search health sciences and other disciplinary databases (i.e. CINAHL, MEDLINE, ERIC) for keywords related to your topic. (See the Articles on Your Topic page of this guide for tips and resources).
Having trouble? Make an appointment with a librarian to discuss databases, keywords, and search strategies.
When you find a relevant article, use it to identify other potentially relevant articles:
Look at its references to identify other relevant articles that you haven't found.
Use Google Scholar or Scopus to identify more recent articles that have cited that one.
Structure of a Literature Review
When you're writing a literature review, you won't just summarize all of the articles that you've found on your topic. Instead, you'll synthesize the evidence. This means that you'll look at the state of the evidence as a whole, telling your reader what it means when you put it all together. Rather than reviewing your sources one at a time, you'll organize your lit review by concept, chronology, methodology, etc. -- whatever makes the most sense for your topic.
The Matrix Method
What is the Matrix Method?
The Matrix Method is an organizational system that guides you through the literature review process from start to finish, outlined in the book Health Sciences Literature Review Made Easy by Judith Garrard (see citation below). It is “intended to teach you how to read a paper, organize the review using the Matrix Method, analyze it, and create a narrative synthesis” (p. 31).
