Outdoor Research Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs Review

Here in Northern Colorado we are off to the best ski season in years. Our local mountain has gotten over 150 inches of snow before the new year which has made for some of the best early season skiing in a long time. All of this great skiing has also made me realize that it is time to update some of my ski gear and this will start with the Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs from Outdoor Research.    

Over the past few weeks I have been skiing in the Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs from Outdoor Research. Outdoor Research was founded by adventure enthusiast Ron Gregg. On an expedition in Denali, Ron experienced gear failure that led to the trip being cut short. Once back in home, Ron quit his job and decided to start engineering outdoor gear that would meet the demands of outdoor adventures. Today the company Outdoor Research is based in Seattle, Washington.

With storm after storm rolling in and more on the way this is the perfect time to get out and get some turns in. This was also a perfect opportunity to try out the Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs and see how they held up to the deep powder.  

Initial Thoughts on the Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs

The Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs are designed to be all mountain ski pants that are made to withstand the rigors of deep snow and big mountain descents. The construction of these bibs is reflected in their engineering.  

The Archangel Bibs are constructed using the GORE-TEX Pro 3L. The GORE-TEX Pro 3L offers top of the line protection from the elements. This material is a 3 layer system that provides durability, breathability, and mobility. The outermost layer utilizes 20- 300 denier fabric that is snag proof and tear resistant. Underneath this protective layer is a breathable, waterproof, and tear resistant inner layer. This technology is why GORE-TEX is widely known as some of the most bomb proof material on the market.  

To allow for mobility, stretch panels have been incorporated throughout the design. These panels have been strategically placed in the knees, lower back, and crotch gusset. Around the ankles are adjustable safeguard cuffs. These durably designed areas are made to protect against ski edges and crampon punctures.  

Design Features

Outdoor Research also is on top of design features for times when “nature calls.” In the front there is a small zipper to allow for relief. Additionally, there is also a rear hatch that can be accessed by two zippers that run the length of the sides of the bibs. 

The storage features of the Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs come from two pockets. One pocket is on the chest of the bibs. This pocket is relatively small and can hold items like a cell phone or car keys. The side pocket located on the right side of the bibs is quite deep. This pocket is more substantial than the chest pocket and could accommodate a small water pouch and snacks.  

The suspender straps are held on by releasable suspender clips. These clips are designed so that straps can come off easily so that undergarments can be changed up easily and effortlessly.  

Testing the Archangel Bibs

Weatherproof is how I would describe these Archangel Bibs. I have had a chance to ski these bibs when it has been dumping snow, in deep powder, and in howling winds. They have seen the full array of Colorado weather this month and I have been super pleased with how they have held up.  

The GORE- TEX Pro 3L is some bomber material. Even when snow would be sitting on my thighs on a long chair lift ride, I would have no soak through. It was impressive how dry I stayed even through several days of skiing in weather where snow, ice, and water would build up on the outside of the pants. These pants are definitely waterproof and hold up well to inclement weather.

The Fit of the Archangel Bibs

For me the Archangel Bibs fit ok. I am 5’10 and 180 pounds and went with the large size. Most of the time I find myself somewhere between size medium and large. In outerwear I tend to error on the side of caution and go with the larger size. This allows for layering underneath. Since Archangel Bibs are a shell I was planning on wearing at least one layer underneath.  

The length of the bibs were near perfect. I found that they came up low but not too low on my boot. I like this as it is another layer of protection from snow coming in.

A Couple Fit Issues

The waist and thighs are where I have most issues with fit. The waist of the size large bibs is too big for me. I have to admit that I may have gone a little overboard on holiday cookies this year but even so the waistline on the Archangel bibs is more than generous. The result is the leftover material bunches in the back. Though this is not a problem or even noticeable with a jacket over the top. If I was skinning in a snowstorm or on a sunny spring ski day where I didn’t wear a jacket over top, this could be a problem.

The other area I have a bit of fit issues with are the upper thighs and crotch. These areas of the bibs are a bit tight for me. I would consider my thighs large as I was a former collegiate sprinter so I sometimes have a tight fit in outerwear. However, I would think that in a size large I would be good to go, yet they were a bit snug. None of the fit issues were a deal killer but were definitely noticeable.

The Bells and Whistles

These bibs are definitely minimalistic which will work for most people. The front pocket is the perfect size for car keys and a cell phone. When wearing a jacket over the top I have really only used this pocket for my keys as digging for my cell phone would be a hassle. The hip pocket is really nice and deep. I have been using this for holding snacks and even a small hydration water pouch. Even with these items inside this there is still more than enough room. One thing that I find a bit interesting is why there is not a complementary pocket on the other side. This is really not an issue for me but I would imagine if I was left handed, I may like the pocket to be on the left side for easier access. 

The scuff guard around the base of the bibs is great. I like how burly this is. When skinning I find that this is when my ski pants get the most torn up. My ski edges sometimes hit my pants causing small cuts that need to get repaired. I don’t see this being that much of an issue on these bibs. The rest of the leg cuff area is also well thought out. The inner portion of the cuff is a snow gator and can be snugly secured around the top of the ski boot. These have been great in the deep snow. Not even once have I had snow get into my boots.

Final Thoughts on the Outdoor Research Archangel GORE-TEX Bibs

Outdoor Research Archangel Review: GORE-TEX Pro for Stretch in a Workhorse Shell

Outdoor Research (OR) has a reputation for producing no-nonsense outerwear for hardcore alpinists, and GORE-TEX is a staple waterproof-breathable membrane for that audience. Gore released GORE-TEX Pro in 2020, and the big news was that this new version was stretchy.

Stretchy GORE-TEX? For this ice climber, that was great news — if it worked. I was dubious, especially of its durability. But I shoved them into my bag anyway as I packed for a trip to search for big ice first ascents in the backcountry of Alaska.

OR released the Archangel Collection last year. It touts the use of the new GORE-TEX Pro to “balance speed and efficiency without compromising protection.” I took the jacket and bibs to Alaska last month for a week of scouting and attempting ice first ascents in the backcountry. Here’s what I found.

Outdoor Research Archangel: Stretch Where It Matters

OR uses the Stretch Technology version of GORE-TEX Pro (Gore claims 20% stretch) in the upper back, lower hood, knees, and crotch gusset.

The panels in the upper back were noticeable while poling during approach skiing and while ice climbing on harder pitches. I am broad across the shoulders for how small my torso is, and most men’s medium jackets are a bit tight across the upper back.

But the Outdoor Research Archangel jacket alleviated the usual tension. I could tell it came from the stretch panels because my backpack remained stationary; I can usually feel my pack moving horizontally when the upper back of my jacket is too tight.

The GORE-TEX Pro stretch crotch gusset was also a winner. On a memorable pitch, I had to stem over overhanging daggers to avoid possibly launching them off.

The move was at the limit of my hip mobility, but the bibs had no problem even when pinned under the leg loops of my harness. The stretchiness surely helped in this particular situation.

Same for the stretch panels in the knees. On the hardest pitch of the trip, I had to high step onto crazy mushroom formations at nearly crotch level.

I had my pants attached to my boots via a bungee cord through the eyelets in the lower hem to act as a “self gaiter,” which prevented them from riding up. The stretchy knees did the trick.

Breathability Everywhere Else

OR chose to use the breathable version of GORE-TEX Pro Most Breathable Technology elsewhere in the Archangel jacket and bibs . Breathability is the performance limiter for waterproof/breathable shells for me when the outing involves any physical effort beyond easy walking. So, this strategy made sense to me.

This Most Breathable Technology uses a lighter denier face fabric compared to the GORE-TEX Pro Most Rugged Technology. I had another shell that was entirely made of the more rugged version, and the lighter weight and softer hand of the fabric were obvious. The Most Breathable Technology fabric was easier to move in while the Most Rugged Technolgy fabric felt stiff and crinkly.

But the “enhanced breathability” was hard to quantify. According to Gore, the Most Breathable Technology tests out to the same ISO 11092 breathability scores as the former, standard GORE-TEX, so there is no relative gain.

The Most Rugged fabric, which measures less breathable by the same test, felt less breathable during approaches when body movement was the most aggressive and consistent, all venting options being roughly the same.

But the Ruggedness?

The Outdoor Research Archangel jacket and bibs admirably resisted damage through a week of hard use. Jagged granite and ice, stray ski edges and crampon points, and haphazardly racked and unracked ice screws all attempted to shred the shell.

I am notoriously hard on gear, and the Archangel surprised me despite the relative wispy hand of the GORE-TEX Pro Most Breathable Technology.

But the limits of the breathable fabric were exposed in comparison to GORE-TEX Pro Most Rugged Technology. I rock climb mostly, and without fail, I will catch a crampon point on the inside of my lower leg stepping through, forgetting how much bigger my foot is with the boot and crampon.

Every single pair of shell and softshell climbing pants I own has telltale patches, and I don’t consider that a flaw of the fabrics chosen. It’s user error brought about by yours truly, trying to use sport climbing techniques on ice.

But on this trip, I had a direct comparison come alive, as I had bibs made of the rugged version of GORE-TEX Pro. On consecutive days, I did the exact same thing, with the same foot.

I caught a mono point on the inside lower leg of the OR Archangel bib, unfortunately just above the edge guard. I made the identical mistake on the other bibs, in almost the exact same spot.

On the OR Archangel, with the breathable fabric, I tore a ¾-inch rip. On the other, most rugged fabric bibs, it was barely a puncture.

You can see the difference in the image below. Same crampon point, same foot, same spot on pants, doing the exact same thing. And I know I had more force behind the stray point on the Most Rugged bibs.

I still don’t fault the OR Archangel; I have torn every pant this way if I miss the edge guard. But it is a notable difference between the two versions of GORE-TEX Pro.

All the Needs, None of the Extras

I felt the OR Archangel had all the features I needed for alpine and backcountry ice climbing, without extras that would do nothing but add weight.

Outdoor Research Archangel jacket and bibs have the following main features:

• Full side zips on bibs, pit zips on jacket
• Large zipped handwarmer pockets on jacket with stretch mesh internal pockets for small items
• One internal zipped chest pocket on jacket and an external one on bibs
• One thigh pocket on bibs
• Eyelets at lower hem for elastic and belt loops on bibs
• Captive cord lock on hood and lower hem of jacket
• Brim stiffener on hood
• The jacket in men’s medium had a verified weight of 1 lb., 2 oz.; the bibs were 1 lb., 8 oz.
• MSRP $649 each for jacket and bibs and available in men’s and women’s versions

I used every feature listed during the trip. The only thing I wished for, and for every other similar trip, is for the edge guard of the bibs to extend further up to help prevent crampon point damage. I could be more careful, but I don’t have a single alpine or ice climbing partner that doesn’t catch a point on the inside lower leg.

Outdoor Research Archangel Jacket and Bibs: Conclusions

I test a lot of shells and the primary purpose is to keep you dry when it’s crucial, both from the outside elements and from internally generated moisture. Most do the first remarkably well, and the latter is usually lacking for more intense pursuits.

GORE-TEX Pro inched the game up with the improved mobility of Stretch Technology. The OR Archangel makes good use of it. But most of the breathability requirements were best mitigated by changing layering and making use of all the zips and vents.

Even by Gore’s PR , the GORE-TEX Pro Most Breathable Technology is no better than before, only better than the newer Most Rugged Technology.

The Outdoor Research Archangel jacket did provide for freer movement in situations where it mattered. And it did prevent both wind and water from penetrating, which would have been catastrophic given the 10- to 20-degree temperatures and sometimes heavy snowfall and wind.

It also survived very harsh treatment outside of a crampon point, which derails all my shell pants.

But following the norm for alpine-oriented shells, the breathability was still a factor, best mitigated by removing layers and opening vents. The Holy Grail of membranes is still out of reach.

In the end, the Archangel is a super-capable workhorse shell that has excellent mobility, durability for alpine pursuits, and the features needed with nothing superfluous. A solid choice for mountain endeavors in challenging conditions.

I would NOT recommend this product

Zipper snags making it nearly impossible to adjust zippers to vent while on the move. The zipper configuration is also poor for ski touring as you have to zip all the way from the top or bottom when you want to vent. There is also way too much fabric around the waist area. The legs fit nicely but not the Bib portion

Perfect for the Wasatch and beyond

I picked up my pair of Archangel bibs around December of 2020, and since then used them for some ice climbing / mountaineering, but primarily for alpine touring and skiing in the Wasatch range. I try to use a modular approach towards my outdoor gear and these bibs are my outer shell for wet, physically demanding winter sports.Thus far they have been one of my favorite and most versatile pieces of my winter kit. They are durable and well fitting, keeping me dry and not hampering movement while getting rubbed against the wall during ice climbing or mix climbing / scrambling while boot packing on a back country tour. Lightweight with plenty of vents, they have been ideal for touring, which has been my primary use for them over the past season. It would be nice to have one more pocket on the front, but all-in-all i would highly recommend these bibs for anyone touring, mountaineering, or engaged in any other winter activity where you're working hard in harsh conditions. Paired with the correct base layer, i use these bibs for all of my outdoor activities from first to last snow of the season.

Had to return, so sad.

I had my eye on these for a long time and finally purchased them. A full zip bib is a must for me and my old North Face bibs finally died. My excitement was quickly diminished though when I tried them on only to find that I couldn't bend my legs past 90 degrees without the crotch putting a vise move on my man parts! I am 5'8" and weight 145lbs. I have chicken legs and wear SMALL in all of my other OR pants. Also, the back of the bib has a ton of extra fabric that would just bunch up behind a pack and no way to adjust for that. I'm like, "what is the purpose of this, so I can put a giant puffy inside of my bibs?" I don't get it. It's a very weird design. Just put a full length zip on the Hemispheres bib or change the cut of the Archangel! Not to worry, I will always love OR and will continue to be a walking billboard for your products. Just not those because bibs shouldn't hurt. :(

These fit absolutely terrible, the thighs are so tight I can barely get them on the ankles are flared worse than pants from the 70s! For reference I'm 175cm and weight 70kg and an athletic build. Like most outdoor companies, these 'alpine climbing' salopettes have been built for skiers not climbers. If they are for climbing, they need to be trim round the ankle, they don't need to fit ski boots. They should be trim so not to snag on crampons. If your backcountry skiing, buy ski pants. If your approaching on ski's to climb, lift the pants up and change into boots. If you want to climb in ski boots, buy ski pants. Make two sets of salopettes, one for climbing, one for skiing. Look at the Jottnar Vanir (sadly no longer mad) for the best ones ever made.

Best bibs yet!

To start off, these are my 3rd pair of bibs. I owned the OR hemispheres and currently the MH boundary ridge bibs. I sold my hemipheres after i wore these and i have 20 days in the Archangel. The Archangel bib is bomber! Im 5'11" 160lbs with a 31in waist and I got a small. I know, sounds crazy that I wear a small I'm limted for really stretching my legs but thats it. I tour often and i wouldnt wear anything else in the winter! From 32 to 0 degrees, these continue to impress with the breathability and weatherproofness! I can wear a base layer plus a midweight midlayer underneath while remaining comfortable. The wind doesn't stand a chance against these bad chickens! I've put that to the test with 35mph winds and my legs dont even notice even when the wind chill is in the negatives! They fit over my ski boots just perfect imo. They also work great with mountaineer boots quite well with a button to tighten the ankle which i really like! Read all the reviews but dont knock em until you try em. They are an athletuc fit for sure but I think most runner/climber type people will love these!

These bibs hold up

I work in highland tropical forests where we are working through all kinds of weather (from rainy days in the 40s to sunny skies in the 90s) and these pants keep me comfy. The side zips work well to keep me cool, the gortex pro keeps me dry and it's held up through the constant ware and trying conditions. Only negative is that the straps are not replaceable.

Fit is great. Pockets in all the right spots. Waterproof like no other. Thinner material will be great for touring. Liked them so much I got a pair for my dad! 6', 170 lbs. Bought the medium with room for thin base layer and some sweat pants (if needed).

Id stay far away from this $700 looks good on paper pant

I ski tour 3-4 times a week in this pant and was planning on using them to bag some 14ers and major ski descents. During some resort skiing as I was laying down a big carve, this pant exploded in my crotch. Im sorry but I bought the size I was supposed to be in according to the size chart and cant ski in them. Infact the size I bought was so tight I could not do a big stepping motion with them. They were restrictive to the point I expended energy touring as they resisted my strides. These are for ice climbing and alpinism. I am not a super flexible person but I am more flexible than these pants

These are awesome bibs. The only reason they don't get a 5 star is that there is no left front pocket :) As a lefty, I can't remember where I put things without a pocket on that side. hahahahaha

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.

Visit Cathedral of the Archangel

The Cathedral of the Archangel contains 46 tombs of Russian leaders who ruled between the 14th and 18th centuries. Come here to explore the tombs and appreciate its mesmerizing religious artwork.

This Russian Orthodox religious structure was named after the Archangel Michael, the protector of Muscovy’s leader. The building took shape in the early 1500s under the watchful eyes of Ivan the Great. From then on, the wealthy and powerful of Russia were buried here until Peter the Great decreed St. Petersburg the country’s new capital city.

Alevisio Novi, an Italian architect, was responsible for the Cathedral of the Archangel we see today, melding traditional Russian designs with Italian influences, resulting in a beautiful Byzantine-style building. Look for distinctive Italian elements, such as scalloped designs on the exterior and note how the staples of Russian church design, namely its domes and pillars, are also evident.

Venture inside the cathedral for a dazzling sensory experience. In contrast with the white exterior, deep dark colors dominate inside. Marvel at the frescoes plastering the wall, which depict various religious scenes, such as the Last Judgment and, appropriately, Archangel Michael confronting the devil.

Stop at the grave of Russia’s first tsar, Ivan the Terrible. He is buried next to a son whom he murdered and another son who became leader after his father’s death. Look for the Farewell to the Family painting nearby, a 16th-century fresco that was uncovered in the 1950s during restoration. This painting depicts a nobleman passing away with his family at his side.

Walk along the south wall to see portrayals of famous Russian historical figures, including prince and national hero Alexander Nevsky and Prince Daniel, his son, a13th-century ruler.

Reach the Cathedral of the Archangel by taking the metro to Alexandrovsky Sad station. The church is located in the Cathedral Square complex, which has many religious buildings. The cathedral has an entrance fee and is open every day except Thursdays.

Outdoor Research Archangel Review: GORE-TEX Pro for Stretch in a Workhorse Shell

Outdoor Research (OR) has a reputation for producing no-nonsense outerwear for hardcore alpinists, and GORE-TEX is a staple waterproof-breathable membrane for that audience. Gore released GORE-TEX Pro in 2020, and the big news was that this new version was stretchy.

Stretchy GORE-TEX? For this ice climber, that was great news — if it worked. I was dubious, especially of its durability. But I shoved them into my bag anyway as I packed for a trip to search for big ice first ascents in the backcountry of Alaska.

OR released the Archangel Collection last year. It touts the use of the new GORE-TEX Pro to “balance speed and efficiency without compromising protection.” I took the jacket and bibs to Alaska last month for a week of scouting and attempting ice first ascents in the backcountry. Here’s what I found.

Outdoor Research Archangel: Stretch Where It Matters

OR uses the Stretch Technology version of GORE-TEX Pro (Gore claims 20% stretch) in the upper back, lower hood, knees, and crotch gusset.

The panels in the upper back were noticeable while poling during approach skiing and while ice climbing on harder pitches. I am broad across the shoulders for how small my torso is, and most men’s medium jackets are a bit tight across the upper back.

But the Outdoor Research Archangel jacket alleviated the usual tension. I could tell it came from the stretch panels because my backpack remained stationary; I can usually feel my pack moving horizontally when the upper back of my jacket is too tight.

The GORE-TEX Pro stretch crotch gusset was also a winner. On a memorable pitch, I had to stem over overhanging daggers to avoid possibly launching them off.

The move was at the limit of my hip mobility, but the bibs had no problem even when pinned under the leg loops of my harness. The stretchiness surely helped in this particular situation.

Same for the stretch panels in the knees. On the hardest pitch of the trip, I had to high step onto crazy mushroom formations at nearly crotch level.

I had my pants attached to my boots via a bungee cord through the eyelets in the lower hem to act as a “self gaiter,” which prevented them from riding up. The stretchy knees did the trick.

Breathability Everywhere Else

OR chose to use the breathable version of GORE-TEX Pro Most Breathable Technology elsewhere in the Archangel jacket and bibs . Breathability is the performance limiter for waterproof/breathable shells for me when the outing involves any physical effort beyond easy walking. So, this strategy made sense to me.

This Most Breathable Technology uses a lighter denier face fabric compared to the GORE-TEX Pro Most Rugged Technology. I had another shell that was entirely made of the more rugged version, and the lighter weight and softer hand of the fabric were obvious. The Most Breathable Technology fabric was easier to move in while the Most Rugged Technolgy fabric felt stiff and crinkly.

But the “enhanced breathability” was hard to quantify. According to Gore, the Most Breathable Technology tests out to the same ISO 11092 breathability scores as the former, standard GORE-TEX, so there is no relative gain.

The Most Rugged fabric, which measures less breathable by the same test, felt less breathable during approaches when body movement was the most aggressive and consistent, all venting options being roughly the same.

But the Ruggedness?

The Outdoor Research Archangel jacket and bibs admirably resisted damage through a week of hard use. Jagged granite and ice, stray ski edges and crampon points, and haphazardly racked and unracked ice screws all attempted to shred the shell.

I am notoriously hard on gear, and the Archangel surprised me despite the relative wispy hand of the GORE-TEX Pro Most Breathable Technology.

But the limits of the breathable fabric were exposed in comparison to GORE-TEX Pro Most Rugged Technology. I rock climb mostly, and without fail, I will catch a crampon point on the inside of my lower leg stepping through, forgetting how much bigger my foot is with the boot and crampon.

Every single pair of shell and softshell climbing pants I own has telltale patches, and I don’t consider that a flaw of the fabrics chosen. It’s user error brought about by yours truly, trying to use sport climbing techniques on ice.

But on this trip, I had a direct comparison come alive, as I had bibs made of the rugged version of GORE-TEX Pro. On consecutive days, I did the exact same thing, with the same foot.

I caught a mono point on the inside lower leg of the OR Archangel bib, unfortunately just above the edge guard. I made the identical mistake on the other bibs, in almost the exact same spot.

On the OR Archangel, with the breathable fabric, I tore a ¾-inch rip. On the other, most rugged fabric bibs, it was barely a puncture.

You can see the difference in the image below. Same crampon point, same foot, same spot on pants, doing the exact same thing. And I know I had more force behind the stray point on the Most Rugged bibs.

I still don’t fault the OR Archangel; I have torn every pant this way if I miss the edge guard. But it is a notable difference between the two versions of GORE-TEX Pro.

All the Needs, None of the Extras

I felt the OR Archangel had all the features I needed for alpine and backcountry ice climbing, without extras that would do nothing but add weight.

Outdoor Research Archangel jacket and bibs have the following main features:

• Full side zips on bibs, pit zips on jacket
• Large zipped handwarmer pockets on jacket with stretch mesh internal pockets for small items
• One internal zipped chest pocket on jacket and an external one on bibs
• One thigh pocket on bibs
• Eyelets at lower hem for elastic and belt loops on bibs
• Captive cord lock on hood and lower hem of jacket
• Brim stiffener on hood
• The jacket in men’s medium had a verified weight of 1 lb., 2 oz.; the bibs were 1 lb., 8 oz.
• MSRP $649 each for jacket and bibs and available in men’s and women’s versions

I used every feature listed during the trip. The only thing I wished for, and for every other similar trip, is for the edge guard of the bibs to extend further up to help prevent crampon point damage. I could be more careful, but I don’t have a single alpine or ice climbing partner that doesn’t catch a point on the inside lower leg.

Outdoor Research Archangel Jacket and Bibs: Conclusions

I test a lot of shells and the primary purpose is to keep you dry when it’s crucial, both from the outside elements and from internally generated moisture. Most do the first remarkably well, and the latter is usually lacking for more intense pursuits.

GORE-TEX Pro inched the game up with the improved mobility of Stretch Technology. The OR Archangel makes good use of it. But most of the breathability requirements were best mitigated by changing layering and making use of all the zips and vents.

Even by Gore’s PR , the GORE-TEX Pro Most Breathable Technology is no better than before, only better than the newer Most Rugged Technology.

The Outdoor Research Archangel jacket did provide for freer movement in situations where it mattered. And it did prevent both wind and water from penetrating, which would have been catastrophic given the 10- to 20-degree temperatures and sometimes heavy snowfall and wind.

It also survived very harsh treatment outside of a crampon point, which derails all my shell pants.

But following the norm for alpine-oriented shells, the breathability was still a factor, best mitigated by removing layers and opening vents. The Holy Grail of membranes is still out of reach.

In the end, the Archangel is a super-capable workhorse shell that has excellent mobility, durability for alpine pursuits, and the features needed with nothing superfluous. A solid choice for mountain endeavors in challenging conditions.
